CRIME SCENE: The panel van carrying loads of illicit cigarette boxes that was discovered by police. By Mapepeza Reporter
A 37 year old driver of the panel van was charged at Germiston police with possession of illicit cigarettes. This came after the man was discovered with a bulk load of fake cigarette cases. The arrest and the confiscation of the smokes took place early Wednesday (November 25) morning. The sharp eye of the EMPD Loss Control Unit members, working in partnership with EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Task
Team and K9 Unit, realized that two drivers of vehicles travelling at a very slow pace on N17 eastbound were in a telephonic conversation and possibly something was amiss. Their instinct proved accurate. The MercedesBenz panel van which the metro police managed to stop was found to be carrying a cargo of illicit cigarettes worth roughly R850 000. Officers closed in on the van and managed to stop one as the other escaped. “One-hundred
and
thirty-four (134) master cases of the illicit Sevilles cigarettes estimated to be worth R850 000 were seized,” said the EMPD Spokesperson. The driver of the panel van had no drivers licence or any form of identification with him. He also failed to provide any documentation for the illegal cargo he was carrying. In an attempt to find out where the illegal cargo was from and its destination, the driver proved to be very uncooperative as he parted with unhelpful and scant information.

TAKING ACTION: The ‘Task Team’ of sport development in Lesedi are ready to face the challenges head-on and solidify sporting excellence, lead by chairperson Johannes Phadime. By Stephen Seakgwe
On Saturday, 7 November, the community of Ratanda hailed the newly-established Lesedi Sports Council at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in the township. The organization aims to formalize and centralize the variety of sporting codes within the local municipality, and strengthen the capacity of local sport federations. Sedibeng Sports Council has been working closely with the LSC to uplift community sports and help with regulations. The LSC will house the federations in all sporting codes; organizations like the LLPA (Lesedi Local Pool Ass.), LLFA (Lesedi Local Football Ass.), and athletics will join. “Our vision is to revitilize all sporting codes in the Lesedi region,” said chairperson Johannes ‘Disko’ Phadime. The LSC has proposed a constitution that strives to develop and promote sport, co-ordinate development of sport programmes and support all levels of profession
(i.e. Junior to Senior) within the different codes. Other mandates include: developing skills and competence of coaches through management training, encourage non-racial, non-sexist sporting practices; and, integrate LSC programmes and policies with the aims or objectives of the affiliated federations. Representative from the Sedibeng Sports Council gave a good explanation of their position with LSC. The involvement of youth was suggested as necessary to the sustainability of the local council, including a working partnerships with Lesedi Local Municipality. The Lesedi Sports Council is officially recognized both the Sedibeng Sports Council and the Gauteng Sports Council. A range of challenges faced include the lack of proper infrastructure, insufficient support for some sporting codes, poorly
maintained grounds and facilities. The viable solution proposed by one member says the morale of the community should be directed towards responsibility and a sense of ownership for the facilities. Another vital input suggests that the focus must mainly be on early childhood development to groom talent at a young age, which can create sustainable jobs in the youth developement industry. The LSC has expectations to fulfil as other councils relating to regulating sport in Lesedi have proved to be a setback in local sports development. Members of the council call on the communities around the region to endorse the establishment of a mother-body of sports development. Also, LSC invites the various sporting federations to affiliate within the structure amd the residents at large to keep promoting local sporting talent.
