About his sustained success, in an interview Joe Mafela said that: “Acting was never about fame and money. It has been about passion. That is why some of us are still here 50 years on.” “It is saddening to hear about the passing of a great friend and colleague. We have been working with Joe Mafela since the Living Legends Legacy Programme (LLP) started. Through the programme he has been instrumental in the shaping of young actors and actresses in the Kwa-Mashu community art centre and at the Market Theatre incubator. He was also a great contributor in the establishment of the LLLP committee. He was full of life and loving compassion for the development of the sector. We have lost a treasure,” says Mr Welcome Msomi, Chairperson of the Living Legends Legacy Programme.

The Infantries are then facing a major task in getting the SMT, through the SGB, to be fully aligned with their programme and re-adopt this phenomenon of HIGH MORALE and HIGH DISCIPLINE. The Ratanda Infantry is now making a plea to the society at large, surrounding communities and the country as a whole to base our efforts in support of this programme with as little as just using

AHMED KATHRADA (1929-2017): The life and times of a giant SOUTH AFRICA is mourning the death of struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada Kathrada, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (March 28) morning at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg after a short period of illness. His funeral service was declared a Special Official Funeral which took place the next day. An activist to the end, Kathrada has had an illustrious political career having served between 1994 and 1999 as the parliamentary counsellor to late President Nelson Mandela. He was born on 21 August 1929 in rural SchweizerReneke in the North West and was introduced to politics as a young boy when he joined a non-racial youth club run by the Young Communist League. At the tender age of 17, Kathrada participated in the 1946 Passive Resistance Campaign led by the South African Indian Congress. He was part of 2 000 resisters who were arrested and imprisoned for defying a law that discriminated against Indian South Africans. Under the tutelage of Transvaal Indian Congress leader, Dr Yusuf Dadoo, Kathrada later befriended emerging ANC leaders such as Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. In 1952, Kathrada was in a group of 20, including Mandela and Sisulu, who were sentenced to nine

months in prison with hard labour - suspended for two years - for organising the Defiance Campaign against six unjust apartheid laws. The campaign was jointly organised by the ANC and SA Indian Congress. In 1954, he was placed under restrictions by apartheid security police and was arrested several times for breaking his banning orders. In 1956, he was among the 156 Congress activists and leaders charged with High Treason. The trial continued for four years, after which all the accused were acquitted. Kathrada, Mandela and Sisulu were among the last 30 to be acquitted. While they were on trial in 1960, the ANC and PAC were banned. In 1962, Kathrada was placed under “house arrest”. The following year, Kathrada broke

his banning orders and went underground to continue his political and military work in the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). In July 1963, the police swooped on Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, a Johannesburg suburb where Kathrada and other banned persons had been meeting secretly. This led to the famous Rivonia Trial in which eight accused were sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour on Robben Island. His fellow prisoners included ANC leaders such as Mandela, Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Denis Goldberg, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni. Kathrada spent 26 years and three months in prison, 18 of which were on Robben Island. In 1982, Mandela, Sisulu, Kathrada, Mhlaba and Mlangeni were transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.

While in prison, he obtained four university degrees, namely BA (in History and Criminology), B Bibliography (in African Politics and Library Science), BA Honours (History) and BA Honours (African Politics). Soon after his release on 15 October 1989, the ANC was unbanned. At its first legal conference in South Africa, Kathrada was elected onto its National Executive Committee. Until 1994, he headed the ANC’s Public Relations Department. At its Conference in 1997, Kathrada declined nomination to the National Executive Committee. In 1994, Kathrada was elected to Parliament and served as President Mandela's parliamentary counsellor. He was chairperson of the Robben Island Museum Council from 1997 until his term expired in 2006. In 2008, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation was launched with the aim of deepening non-racialism. Kathrada was an active participant in the foundation’s work, which includes promoting constitutional ideals and human rights, youth leadership and development, challenging racism and preserving and promoting liberation history. Kathrada is survived by his wife, Barbara Hogan, also an ANC stalwart and veteran, who once served as Minister of Public Enterprises.

MASINA REVEALS BIG PLANS TO BOOST CITY’S ECONOMY!

ON Wednesday, March 29 the council of the Ekrhuleni Metro Municipality held a special council meeting to set the stage for the Executive Mayor to deliver his first address to the residents. Delivering his State of the City Address (SoCA) Mayor Masina said the City has ringfenced over R12 billion of procurement opportunities to local entrepreneurs, service providers and enterprises during this term of office through the Mintirhisano programme. “Out of the R12 billion, we resolve to specifically make commitments not less than R1 billion per annum to 500 youth owned enterprises, R500 million per annum on 100 emerging construction companies and more than 500 million black industrialists. “We will use the remaining R10 billion for general strategic procurement from black business and community enterprise as part of

our policy of transforming economic participation,” said Masina.

Under the theme, “The City and the State of its people”, the City has established a Land Invasion unit for the prevention and enforcement of illegal land invasion, to address the invasion of RDP houses and the scourge of all illegal connections. “We as the city are also working to upgrade the special profile of the informal settlements that house about 164 000 households. We will give people all municipal land that was classified as ‘illegally occupied’ by people in informal settlements,” he said. R88 billion has been invested in the Quantum Leap project which aims to increase security of water supply by generating an additional 635 mega litres of water.

“We are working on building 45 more pump stations for both water and sewage in the next five years. This remains a challenge given that we are fast depleting the most important resource, water,” explained the Mayor. The Municipality will construct and install a 9m bronze statue as a fitting tribute and recognition of the great struggle icon at the OR Tambo International Airport in October 2017. “We will develop the OR Tambo Narrative Centre precinct which will include the establishment of the OR Tambo library or knowledge centre. The narrative centre will give us access to an array of documents not previously available in South Africa and housed in the Soncini archive in Panizzi Library dealing with OR Tambo and the Liberation struggle in the Southern Africa,” - GautengOnline

BRAZILIAN MEAT SCANDAL MAKES SA SUSPEND IMPORTS!

THE Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has suspended imports of meat from establishments suspected to be involved in the Brazilian meat scandal.

The department said it is not known how many consignments may have already left Brazil and are on their way to South Africa.

Consignments arriving at the ports of entry in South Africa may be tested microbiologically for organisms such as Salmonella.

Addressing the three-day Local Climate Solutions Conference in Birchwood on March 23, Mayor Masina said cities around the world needed to be at the forefront of solutions that will ensure sustainable development and the reversal of the rate of climate change.

In a statement on Wednesday (March 23), the DAFF has requested the Brazilian authorities to provide official information and a list of establishments that have been identified in the issue raised in the media regarding unsafe meat being exported to various countries, which could include South Africa.

“However DAFF is in the process of ensuring that the establishments implicated are suspended from exporting meat to South Africa until the Brazilian Veterinary Authority have fully investigated the matter and can give the necessary assurances for compliance to the South African requirements for importation of meat into South Africa.” Officials of the department at all ports of entry which receive meat have been instructed to test every container of meat from Brazil using the existing policies regarding testing of consignments.

In addition, the department assured consumers that officials at ports of entry have been vigilant when coming to meat imports.

HUMAN Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says government is working on laws to stop the sale of government subsidized houses. "When (government) gives a house to the needy, it is for the whole family and not for one person. No one must sell the house. It must be passed from generation to generation," said Minister Sisulu..

“DAFF has also advised the Brazilian authority to ban all exportation of meat from such establishments until the issue has been resolved to the satisfaction of the South African Veterinary Authority,” said the department.

TRIPARTITE M.O.U SIGNED!

“As the City of Ekurhuleni, by signing this Memorandum of Understanding we want to deal with issues of heritage conservation, by implementing a number of strategic initiatives, both in Lusaka and here in South Africa. We also look forward to strategic sessions on knowledge sharing and cultural exchanges. Between the two countries there’s a rich history of political freedom which is anchored

by the foundation that is the struggle stalwart OR Tambo,” said Mayor Masina. Lusaka’s signature had been outstanding in the MoU, which was signed in 2008 with Alfred Nzo District Municipality and the City of Ekurhuleni. Mayor Masina also handed over a copy of the letter written by OR Tambo while he was in Italy during exile.

The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) – Local Governments for Sustainability Africa is held in

collaboration with the City under the theme, “Water for Cities”. The Local Climate Solutions for Africa (#LoCS4Africa) 2017 event aims to bring diverse African cities together in a common mission to find solutions to most pressing urban water challenges; flooding and drought, infrastructure, sanitation and associated quality of life and health challenges. “Even though Africa is the lowest contributor to climate change it is the most vulnerable

continent to its effects. According to research, water will be the main vehicle through which our people on the continent will experience the climate change impacts. These will include poor water quality, drought and the drying up of our rivers,” he said. ICLEI envisions a world of sustainable cities that confront the realities of urbanization, adapt to economic and demographic trends and prepare for the impacts of climate change and other urban challenges.
