CRIME IS alarmingly on the RISE in Duduza! Duduza SAPS has issued a serious warning to residents about the alarming high number of cases reported for contact and property related crimes. “We, at Duduza SAPS, urge our community to be safety and security minded, to remain alert, and be vigilant in informing the police of criminals and their activities,” said Warrant Officer Imtiaz Yakub Rasool, Duduza SAPS spokesperson. Burglaries are occurring randomly around the Duduza Area, and in recent times, we have noticed that perpetrators are so bold as to break into houses while the residents are at home and in bed. This boldness indicates that the perpetrator may go to extreme lengths to fulfil his desire to acquire the property he seeks and we urge the community not to confront them but rather call the police for assistance. In addition residences are targeted whilst the house is vacant and the people are away from their homes. In as much, we can say that thus far we have been lucky that no one was attacked during these burglaries. Property targeted generally is electrical kitchen appliances, home entertainment systems, televisions, cellular communication devices, laptops, computers and other small items that are of value and easy to carry. Hijackings are taking place where victims are re-

turning from or leaving to work, either early hours of the morning or late hours of the evening. Cars targeted are high performance and luxury vehicles eg. Audi A3, VW Golf GTi, as well as cars that can be utilised as local taxis eg. Mazda 323, old Toyota Corrolla, Toyota Conquest and Tazz. Contact crimes are crimes perpetrated person on person, such as robbery, assault, rape and murder. Property related crimes are crimes directed at property, such as burglary, general theft, theft out of motor vehicles, house robbery, hi-jacking, etc. House Robberies are also increasing where, perpetrators are targeting households and victims either early hours of the morning or when they are returning home from work. Property targeted is generally cash, cellular phones, laptops, televisions, home entertainment systems, and if the car is available, the cars are taken. “Rape is another formidable problem in the Duduza area, where there is generally involvement of liquor by the victim or perpetrator, either or both intoxicated. In most cases reported, they were at liquor establishments and thereafter acts of nonconsensual sexual activity are perpetrated on the victims. The victims are generally intoxicated and are not able to defend themselves,” says Duduza

SAPS in a statement. The police say they have also noticed that in a lot of the cases, the perpetrator is known to the victim and they have had a domestic relationship, such as boyfriend and girlfriend. Safety Tips: *Ask people you know and trust to keep an eye on your home *Observe and report any and all suspicious persons, vehicle and activities to the police *Be observant when returning home and if you suspect something out of the ordinary, pass and go to the Police Station to get help. * Do not fight your attacker but comply as this can save your life and prevent unnecessary violence. “We urge our community to take the necessary precautions so as to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. We also urge the community not to take the law into their own hands as this will most definitely result in charges being laid against them for breaking the law. Help us to fight crime by being our eyes and ears. Remember, we are here to protect and serve, and to succeed, we need your assistance as we cannot be everywhere all the time,” emphasized W/O Rasool.

HAWKS WARNS OF OPENING ACCOUNTS FOR FRAUDSTERS!

Crime Investigations Directorate, the Hawks, have of late detected a trend in which people receive money in order to open bank accounts for people they do not even know.

BRAND NEW-BENZ: The recovered white C-Class Mercedes Benz and the black Mercedes Benz A250. On Wednesday, June 8, two men who admitted to going for the Mercedes Benz latest models in their hijacking ventures were arrested in Soweto by the EMPD and the SAPS Benoni Cluster Tracing Unit members. Two new Mercedes vehicles were recovered. Information gathered led the police to a carwash in Soweto where the first hijacked Merc was found. The police staked out the carwash for hours until around 10 p.m. While police were waiting for the owners, two suspects went into the hijacked white C-Class sedan. The pair was arrested and they led the police to the second black A250 Merc in Katlehong.

Investigations have revealed that most people have become the subjects of investigations after their accounts were found to have been used to either receive or transfer money which has been defrauded from other victims.

‘Govt has plans for SMMEs’ -RAMAPHOSA

South Africa’s Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa (above) said the Government is working on a plan to boost SMME development.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says government has a clear plan to support Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) and to increase local production. The Deputy President said in support of government’s nine-point plan, which President Jacob Zuma announced in the State of the Nation Address last year, government is working with business and labour on several critical interventions in the economy. He said this when he delivered a Memorial Lecture on the life and times of labour union leader Elijah Barayi on Tuesday, June 14. “We have a clear plan to promote local procurement of goods and services and to increase local production. “We have a plan to grow SMMEs and cooperatives and to support these through public procurement. “Though we have achieved much for workers, we know there is still so much more that we need to do,” he said. The Deputy President said the country has yet to overcome the high levels of structural unemployment that were all too familiar to Barayi and others during the dying years of apartheid. He said while a lot of progress has been made to put a dent on unemployment, the country has not achieved levels of economic growth needed to create a desirable amount of jobs.

“We have increased access to education, but so many of our people still do not have the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. “We have reduced levels of poverty, but still too many of our people – including some who have jobs – live in poverty. “Our work is far from complete,” he said.

Addressing labour representatives on Tuesday (June 14), the Deputy President said government has the means to build municipalities that provide services efficiently, that attract investment, stimulate growth and develop their people. He said above all the achievements of the last 22 years, the most challenging tasks still lie ahead. He said in meeting these challenges, nothing is more important than a strong, united, cohesive and progressive trade union movement. The country is currently engaged in the second phase of the transition, and as such, there is a need to transform the economy to equally serve the interests of all South Africans. The Deputy President said this includes changing the patterns of ownership and control; ensuring that people have access to education, skills and opportunities and redistributing land, capital and natural resources. “As we work to overcome the dreadful legacy of colonialism and apartheid, we must confront the immediate challenges of weakened global demand, lower commodity prices and the impact that these have on the growth of our economy. “We must also contend with electricity supply challenges, the effects of a devastating drought and constrained public finances. “Not only does this constrain our ability to grow the economy and create jobs, it also has a devastating effect on the daily lives of working people. “We will continue to work to meet the basic needs of all South Africans, extending our electrification programme to remaining areas, accelerating the upgrading of informal settlements and improving support to indigent households,” he said. – SAnews Agency

‘Stop destroying public property!’ - youth told The Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the inaugural June 16 memorial lecture.

Delivering the lecture, Ms Ohara Diseko, a former teacher at Orlando High School during the 1976 Youth Uprising, called on young people to protect their right to learn. The lecture formed part of the annual activities to o observe youth month. She said June 16 was not an event but a turning point for the country. “During these times we learned under difficult conditions under apartheid, things have changed for you. You owe it to those who lost their lives so that you can enjoy this freedom today” she said. She further urged young people to move away from expecting government to do everything for them but instead, use the opportunities that government continue to provide for youth. Addressing the lecture, Premier David Makhura said every generation must discover its own mis-

sion and define its own path. “You can’t copy what the youth of 1976 did because their challenges were different from your challenges today. Youth is not a permanent state of being, young people face many challenges today but there are many opportunities too,” said Makhura. Makhura said the youth of Gauteng had a big challenge of drugs. He said there were also challenges of lack of skills and unemployment. In addition, Premier Makhura called on all Gauteng young people to come to Nasrec on Wednesday (15 June), the province will be hosting a youth Ntirhisano. “We will have conversation with you as young people while outlining what government is doing in giving the youth of this province hope. We ask you to seize the opportunities that are there for you,” he said. The lecture was attended by Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau, Olympic medalist, Khotso Mokoena amongst others. -Gauteng Online

Lindiwe Mahlangu Foundation donates jungle gym to Orphanage!

Child Protection week ended on a highnote for children at the Good Hope Orphanage Home in the impoverished Winterveldt community when they received a donation of a jungle gym from the Lindiwe Mahlangu Foundation (LMF)at a joyous event to celebrate International Children's Day held on Saturday, June 4. "All of us can make a difference in the lives of children by showing compassion, love and care to them because they are the future of our country",said Gwen MahlanguNkabinde,Patron of LMF,former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Minister of Public Works committing to strengthened partnership with Good Hope Orphanage Home. Mahlangu-Nkabinde who has adopted the orphanage home through the LMF emphasised that children are a gift from God and should be protected from abuse and neglect. She commended the founder of the orphanage home,Mama Maria Lwate for responding to the plight of the 113 abandoned and abused children that are currently accommodated at the home. "As a community worker, you have taught us how to love unconditionally and give selflessly," she said. Mahlangu-Nkabinde urged community members to plough back to their communities. "Don't throw away foodstuffs when there are children elsewhere that are hungry, donate to the needy to alleviate

hunger and malnutrition,"she underscored. Her appeal was echoed by Miss Pre-teen Miss Continent South Africa 2016 and e'pap Ambassador and co-founder of Ditsala Children's Shields & Projects, Reabetswe Makwe(11) who spoke passionately about children's rights and protection and also appealed for partnership support for Soshanguve Community Radio's one hundred million nutrient replete society project to fight malnutrition among children.

The courageous 17-year- old Ontlametse Phalatse who was born with progeria, a rare disease that causes children to age rapidly encouraged the orphans not to be discouraged by their circumstances,to avoid drugs and to pursue their studies. The overjoyed Ma-Lwate said that the home has raised hundreds of children since she established her first home in 1975. "We have raised children some of whom are today doctors, lawyers and engineers," said the proud founder who normally raises children who are above 18 years and are still pursuing their studies in her own home. She started off scavenging for leftover food from refuse dumps to feed the children before her home was registered by the Department of Social Development. One of the children she had adopted when she was 6 years old,Dithoriso Loate now 32, runs her own Mogodu Children's Home in Ratjepane village.

METRO GIVES TIPS TO REDUCE POWER BILLS AND DEMAND THIS WINTER!

SAVE YOUR POWER AND CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SUPPLY THAT SAVES LIVES, AND SOME RANDS. The City of Ekurhuleni has issued tips to help communities reduce higher electricity bills and reduce power outages as a result of overloading this winter. Speaking on behalf of the City, spokesman Zweli Dlamini says a lot of residents find themselves with high electricity bills during winter, but keeping warm ‘does not have to be costly if you are smart about space heating this winter’. The municipality advises ratepayers to among others delay switching on a space heater and prevent their electricity bills from spiking by doing the following: • Dress warmly - wear a beanie and gloves at home; • Wrap yourself in a blanket, put a hot water bottle on your lap and drink your favourite hot drink when you watch television; • Close your curtains before it gets dark - it improves thermal insulation by preventing heat from escaping your home; • Seal gaps around your windows; • Draught-proof wall cavities throughout your home and, if you have one, your chimney –sealing and weather-stripping are best for sealing cracks and holes; • Draught-proof your doors and make sure all door sweeps are in a good condition; and

• Most importantly, install fire retardant ceiling insulation before the onset of winter. According to Eskom, in winter proximately 40% of heat is lost through the roof if your home is not insulated. Eskom explains that insulation: • Makes a home up to 5% warmer in winter; • Reduces – and postpones - the need to switch on space heaters and climate control systems; • Contributes to lowering your electricity bill - an insulated and draught-proofed room requires 51% less energy to heat up; and • Allows you to help keeping the lights on this winter.

Should the temperature dips to very low levels, and using heaters becomes unavoidable, homeowners should buy heaters with a builtin thermostat, and only heat the rooms that they are going to spend time in,” the metro advises. When going to sleep, electric blankets are preferable to leaving heaters on all night. Electric blankets are surprisingly energy efficient and can be made even more energy efficient by turning them to their highest setting for a few minutes, then turning them off for the night, just before getting into bed. It’s also important to keep the warm air inside one’s home from escaping. When it’s cold, heat is transferred outside.

Homeowners have also been encouraged to switch off their geysers during evening peaks, 5 – 9pm, in order to alleviate serious supply constraints.

When using an electric heater close windows and curtains, and cover the opening underneath doors. By installing ceiling insulation heat loss will be reduced significantly.

To assist in managing their demand homeowners should use heating appliances as a last resort by, for example, reducing body heat-loss by covering themselves with sufficient layers of clothing or blankets, or by using hot water bottles or microwave bean-bags to warm themselves up.

“As a City we are quite confident that should our ratepayers adopt these, they will see a huge drop on their municipal accounts while at the same time a massive reduction on power outages which are mainly caused by over-loading,” Dlamini explains

FOR THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS!

SOMETIMES WE NEED TO SHARPEN OUR AXES! Mr Dumisani Lutweyi is a Pastor/Trainer/Facilitator/Assessor/Moderator/ Educator/Promoter/Brand Ambassador/Events Sport Administrator and Motivational Speaker.

This week’s motivation is based on the following story: A young woodcutter was cutting wood in the mountains. In a short while, an old woodcutter came to work in the mountain as well. At nightfall, the young woodcutter was surprised to find out that the old woodcutter had cut more wood even though he came later. The young woodcutter made a decision secretly that he would come to work in the mountains even earlier the next morning. The next day, the young woodcutter indeed came to work in the woods very early. He thought, “I will certainly win this time.” Unexpectedly, when he carried his wood back, he found the old woodcutter had beaten him again. On the third day, the young woodcutter decided that he would not only arrive early, but also leave late. He thought he would definitely win this time. However, the old woodcutter beat him again on that day. The same thing happened on the fourth and fifth day. On the sixth day, the young woodcutter could no longer stand it and raised the question to the old woodcutter, “I start working earlier than you and stop working later than you. How come you beat me every time? Besides, I’m also younger than you.” “OH, young man!” The old woodcutter patted him on his shoulder and said, “After I get home every day, the first thing I do is to sharpen my axe. While you are sleeping your fatigue off, your axe is getting duller and duller.

A tree will fall after I chop five times, but only after you chop more than ten times.” The young woodcutter understood completely and set off to sharpen his axe.

These students were honoured on the 19th of May 2016 in their graduation ceremony were they were applauded and rewarded for their hard work.

The Moral:

They were rewarded with certificates, ownership of the gowns and hoods, a refund of gown hire of R150 and a free photo shoot.

We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to sharpen our performances and abilities. Sometimes we all need time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don’t take the time to sharpen our performances and abilities, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness. This will certainly lead to unproductivity either at work, our marriages, and our relationships even generally we will be deemed useless.

Apart from their happiness lies misery as they are struggling to find internships/in service training to complete their qualification and obtain their diplomas, only 3 of them are placed the rest of them still seeks the opportunity to gain practical experience. The students are in need to gain valuable work experience. They appealing to public sector and other companies across Gauteng and in Heidelberg to help in finding placement for these graduates.

An improved performance equals to better results, now stop comparing yourself to others and start sharpening yourself for a better performance.
