Get your flu vaccine before winter
Winter is approaching and to avoid getting flu, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) has advised that the public to get vaccinated. “Vaccination is the most effective strategy to prevent influenza. Getting the flu vaccine can reduce flu illnesses, visits to the clinics or to doctors rooms, missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations,” said the NICD. The influenza season in South Africa occurs in the winter months and is expected to start in the coming weeks. On average, the season begins in the first week of June. However, recently, the season has started as early as the last week of April and as late as the first week of July. The flu vaccine for the 2018 season is currently available at public health facilities and at pharmacies.
Road safety ahead of upcoming long weekend Briefing reporters at the release of the 2018 preliminary Easter Road Safety report showing that 510 fatalities have been recorded on the country’s roads over the Easter period, Transport Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande urged road users to be cautious. “We are also approaching another what in fact will be a long, long weekend that of 27 April next Friday and May Day [1 May] on Tuesday the following week. Let’s observe the rules of the road. Our report clearly shows hugely that the causes of crashes have got to do with human behaviour. Let’s respect the rules of the road so that we are able to save lives on our roads,” said Minister Nzimande at the briefing. The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Takedown Operation has led to the arrest of seven suspects linked to three kidnapping incidents in Gauteng. The operation led by a Multidisciplinary Task Team consisting of detectives, Hawks, crime intelligence and hostage negotiators was conducted at Rossettenville, Johannesburg, where the team raided three addresses. At one of the addresses, an Eldorado Park kidnap victim, kidnapped on the 16th of April, was rescued during the operation, SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers the Eulogy at the Special Official Funeral for the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Mapepeza Reporter
On Saturday, April 14, the formal programme at the funeral of Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at Orlando Stadium drew to a close just as the rain began to fall. The family and dignitaries left the stage after a fitting tribute to the late struggle icon. Thousands of mourners are made their way to the Olando Stadium in Soweto to bid farewell to the nation’s heroine. Others continue to sing and pay their final respects to the Mother of the Nation. The funeral procession ended with a private burial at the Fourways Memorial Park. President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the eulogy saying Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died, but she is not gone. “The Mother of the Nation has died, but she is not gone. She lives on in the young girl who today still walks the dusty streets of Mbongweni, resolutethat her life will not be defined by the poverty into which she was born, nor constrained by the attitudes to women that seek to demean her existence. She lives on in the domestic worker who is determined that the suffering and sacrifice of her many years of servitude will not be visited on her children. She lives on in the prisoner who regrets his choices as much as he bemoans his circumstances, who dearly seeks another chance to make a better life for his family. She lives on in the engineer, who has defied discrimination and prejudice to build a career for herself in a field so long reserved for a privileged few. She lives on in the social worker who tends to those in society who are neglected and abused, asking nothing for himself but the
opportunity to serve. She lives on in the Palestinian teenager who refuses to stand by as he is stripped of his home, his heritage and his prospects for a peaceful, content and dignified life. She lives on in the African-American woman, who though she lives in a country of great prosperity and progress, is still weighed down by the accumulated prejudice of generations. She lives on even in the conscience of the apartheid security policeman who has yet to atone for his murderous ways, but whose humanity she sought to salvage and whose dignity she fought to restore. She lives on in the movement to which she dedicated her life, as it seeks its way back to the path along which she led it. She lives on in the nation that called her ‘Mama’, as it strives each day to fulfil its destiny as a united, peaceful, prosperous and just society. Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died, but she is not gone. She lives on in all of us. She inspires our actions. She guides our struggles. She remains our conscience. May her soul rest in eternal peace. May her spirit live forever. Lala ngoxolo Nobantu, Ngutyana. Phapha. Makhalendlovu Msuthu. Msengetwa. Qhawe lama qhawe.” Others who paid tribute to Mama Madikizela-Mandela included her daughters Zenani Mandela-Dlamini, Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, ANC’s Fikile Mbalula and a host of international guests such as Naomi Campbell and Reverend Jessie Jackson. Singers like Zonke, Thandiswa Mazwaim Dorothy Masuku and Sipho Hotstix Mabuse paid tribute to mama Winnie in songs during the 12 hour special official funeral.

Artists recognising painful conditions endured by children born with HIV! By Bheki Julius Radebe
While the country is about to celebrate Freedom Month, Radical Arts Forum (RAF), recently hosted a Born Not Free Generation Poetry Competition at Duduza Library. This was an artistic event aimed at highlighting conditions endured by children born with HIV and challenges they go through mentally as children Born Not Free from HIV Infection. The competition was fully supported by Duduza Library, Duduzile Sokhela Publishing and sponsored by the Gauteng Department Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation. The department sponsored this event as it fitted well with their School Holiday Programme, where they ensemble scholars to showcase, na-
ture and expose their artistic talents. “We had one week to promote this event, hence we expected less than 60 people, but the turnout got us off guards. People came in numbers, which compelled us to improvise in terms of refreshments. However, all went well. We were able to expose talent while educating our society about the plight of children born with HIV,” said Lerato Kubyane, RAF’s chairperson. “As an organisation we created the Born Not Free Generation Programme to create a platform for a positive dialogue about HIV and children in our house-holds,” added Kubyane. Radical Arts Forum believes in the power of per-
forming art as an effective tool to educate and raise awareness on a specific issues. Its mission is to address societal ills, especially issues that has to do with men and their role in the society using performing art as a catalyst to put across the intended message. “Our main purpose to sponsor this event is because its focus is poetry. As the department we’ve realised that poetry events are very rare and less supported in Gauteng if not in the country,” said Maserami Moloi, Gauteng Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation deputy director. Moloi congratulated all winners who walked away with price money worth of R 3000 divided into three categories.

First name: Winifred (Winnie) Last name: Madikizela-Mandela Date of birth: 26 September 1936 Location of birth: Mbongweni, Eastern Cape, South Africa Date of death: 2 April 2018 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa Synopsis: ANC Political Activist and ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, former Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, President of ANCWL, member of the NEC of the ANC, Member of Parliament (MP) since 1994.
CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE MOTHER OF THE NATION!
REST IN PEACE WINNIE MADIKIZELA-MANDELA
PART 2 OF 2 THE FULL HISTORY OF MAMA WINNIE MADIKIZELA MANDELA (1936-2018)
Marriage to Mandela It is difficult to separate Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's personal life from her life as the wife of Nelson Mandela, one of the most prominent political activists of the 20th century. Winnie first met Nelson Mandela in 1957. She was waiting at a bus stop when Adelaide Tsukudu and Oliver Tambo stopped by in their car, on their way to meet Nelson at a cafe. Winnie joined them, and the next day Nelson asked her to dinner. Nelson was married at the time but was attracted by Winnie's charisma and dedication. After he obtained a divorce, they were married on June 14, 1958. Since his treason trial was still going on at this time, Nelson was allowed only four days' leave for the celebration. From the start of their relationship, he told Winnie that while he loved her, his goal of achieving a democratic South Africa would always come first. They had two daughters, Zenani (born in 1958) and Zindzi (born in 1960), who would grow up without their father and sometimes without their mother due to the Mandelas' political commitments, which ultimately led to a turbulent family life. During Mandela’s time in prison‚ Madikizela-Mandela was not spared the reach of the apartheid forces. With her husband in jail, the authorities increased the pressure to make Winnie’s life as difficult as possible, with her children particularly targeted. On numerous occasions Winnie enrolled them into schools, only for the security police to find out and insist that the schools have them expelled. This was in addition to the continued raids on her house; her banning order and frequent last minute refusals to visit her husband in jail. From her highly restricted position, she organised assistance for political prisoners. On the night of 12 May 1969 Winnie awoke to the familiar sounds of a police raid. Her children were home for the school holidays and the police made a particularly thorough investigation of everything in the house. After ransacking the property, they tore Winnie away from her daughters and bundled her into a police van. She had just fallen foul of Prime Minister John Vorster’s 1967 Terrorism Act, No 83 (Section 6), which allowed the arrest of anyone perceived to be endangering the maintenance of law and order. It stipulated that anyone
could be arrested without warrant, detained for an indefinite period of time, interrogated and kept in solitary confinement without access to a lawyer or a relative. She was detained for 18 months in solitary confinement in a condemned cell at Pretoria Central Prison before being charged under the Suppression of Communism Act of 1950. After her release, the family was harassed constantly by policemen who searched their house without warning or spied on them in pursuit of information on the ANC. Winnie was also forbidden from communicating with more than one person at a time in order to limit her ANC activities. She was arrested so frequently that she kept a small suitcase packed with necessities near the front door. Her daughters have said that they grew up expecting to be awakened by a loud knock on the door in the middle of the night.
Soweto Uprising By the mid 1970s, unrest amongst the South African youth had become increasingly volatile. The struggle for liberation in South Africa was increasingly being taken up the country’s youth and Winnie found herself settling into a new role to as the symbolic mother to this burgeoning student movement. In May 1976, just a few weeks before the famous student uprising in Soweto, Winnie along with Dr Nthatho Motlana helped to establish the Soweto Parents’ Association. In the weeks that followed the violence of June 16, Winnie and Dr Motlana had their hands full attending to youth and parents who had been arrested, injured or killed in the riots. The police attempted to pin responsibility for inciting the violence on Winnie herself, but regardless of how influential she might have been, Winnie’s influence alone could never explain the levels of anger amongst South Africa’s youth at that time. The struggle for liberation in South Africa was increasingly being taken up the country’s youth and Winnie found herself settling into a new role to as the symbolic mother to this burgeoning student movement. The police attempted to pin responsibility for inciting the violence on Winnie herself, but regardless of how influential she might have been, Winnie’s influence alone could never explain the levels of anger amongst South Africa’s youth at that time. For the Soweto youth uprisings, Winnie was once again detained. The police held her in custody for five months, eventually releasing her in December 1976 without charge. In January 1977, she was served with a fresh five year banning order.
Brandford
However, there was, in fact, a far graver fate awaiting Winnie in 1977: in the early hours of the morning on May 15, a police contingent arrived at her doorstep to take her away to the station. Over the coming hours it transpired what the police had in store. On instruction from the government, the police were instigating Winnie’s domestic exile to a dusty town in the middle of the Freestate, a place that would keep her for the next eight years of her life. Brandfort lies around 400 kilometres south-west of Johannesburg and 50 kilometres north of Bloemfontein. Prior to her arrival in Phathakahle, the township there, the Department of Bantu Affairs had informed locals that a dangerous female – indeed, a terrorist – would be moving there and that they should avoid contact with her at all costs. To all intents and purposes Winnie’s banishment to Brandfort backfired. Instead of being demoralised by her isolation and the endemic racism of local shopowners, Winnie continued much as before, flouting racist Apartheid legislation and dumbfounding conservatives with her audacity not to be cowed by unjust segregationist laws. Opinion polls taken during her first two years in Brandfort showed that she was seen to be the second most important political figure in the country after Zulu chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi. While she was living out her banishment she established a local gardening collective; a soup kitchen; a mobile health unit; a day care centre; an organisation for orphans and juvenile delinquents and a sewing club. After spending eight years in this backwater and in the midst of growing urban turmoil, Winnie’s banishment finally came to an end in 1986. She was at last free to return home to her house at 8115, Vilakazi Street, Orlando West.
Mandela United FC
Shortly after returning home, Winnie again set to doing what she had always done and looked for ways to help those she saw as vulnerable. To this end, Winnie established a place for disenfranchised
7 youth to feel at home, organise, and socialise. This informal grouping of youngsters became known as the Mandela United Football Club (MUFC). As it transpired, football was but one aspect of these groups’ vigilante activities and for MUFC, it would unfortunately be the last thing for which they were remembered.
Free Mandela
By the mid-1980s, mass revolts against apartheid were occurring throughout South Africa. During this time, Nelson Mandela's influence and reputation continued to grow. As many young South African activists spent time in jail with him, Robben Island came to be known as "Nelson Mandela University" because of his influence on young prisoners. In 1987, members of the ANC and Afrikaner apartheid opponents signed a joint manifesto calling for Nelson Mandela's release from prison. International pressure began to mount as well, as countries around the world refused to do business with South Africa as long as it practised apartheid. On February 2 1990, FW De Klerk used the opening of parliament to unban the ANC along with 31 other organisations. Political prisoners who had not committed violent crimes were to be released and executions of prisoners on death row were to cease. Also, in a major move, Nelson Mandela was to be released from jail. Just over a week later, on February 11, Nelson walked out of Victor Verster Prison hand in hand with Winnie to a reception of hunderds of thousands of supporters. The couple were finally reunited after almost 30 years of separation.
Controversy of Stompie In 1991‚ she was convicted of kidnapping and being an accessory to assault of Stompie Seipei‚ a young activist who was killed by a member of her bodyguards and a player in the MUFC. According to sources, Madikizela-Mandela’s bodyguards had abducted Seipei (14) in 1989‚ along with three other youngsters‚ from the home of Methodist minister Paul Verryn. Though Winnie was apparently not home at the time of the murder, she was sentenced to six years in prison for authorizing the kidnapping. "My deepest regret is that I failed Stompie and that I was unable to protect him from the anarchy of those times," she stated at the time. Before she served any time in prison, however, her sentence was reduced to a fine. There is some evidence to suggest that her sentence was reduced in order to eliminate political tension or possible violence prior to the first democratic elections in South Africa. While Nelson stood by his wife and proclaimed her innocence, the couple separated in 1992. Winnie continued to clash with the leadership of the ANC. The controversy surrounding her activities caused the organization to view Winnie as a political liability and seek to distance themselves from her. In addition, the ANC Women's League accused her of making decisions without consulting them. This controversy caused close to half of the members of the League to quit in protest. Winnie’s political career was all but over, and despite
a brief stint as the head of the ANC Women’s League at the end of 1993. After negotiations between ANC and the National Party, the first democratic elections were held in April 1994 where Mandela beat De Klerk by majority vote. When Nelson and the ANC Party took control of the government, it marked the first time that the black majority held power in South Africa since colonial times. One of the first tasks undertaken by the new government was to change the country's constitution to abolish apartheid.
Life under Democracy After the first democratic election in 1994‚ Madikizela-Mandela became an MP and was appointed deputy minister of arts and culture. She was fired by Mandela after an unauthorised trip to Ghana. She had been an Member of Parliament (MP) ever since. The marriage of Winnie and Nelson Mandela ended in April 1996. In September of that year, Nelson became romantically involved with Graca Machel, the widow of President Samora Machel of Mozambique. Upon leaving Cabinet and Parliament, she dedicated her energy on working with different communities, especially people affected by HIV and AIDS, and poverty. She invested her time in young people and her home in Soweto was often a sanctuary for the youth. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was responsible for mentoring many of our country’s young leaders. In 2016‚ she was conferred an Order of Luthuli in Silver during the National Orders Awards ceremony for her excellent contribution to the fight for the liberation of the people of South Africa. At a time when the ANC was embattled with factions and corruption scandals, the struggle stalwart
showed her power of leadership during the party’s 54th Policy Conference in Nasrec last year. Winnie Mandela played the peace-maker when she joined the hands of the ANC’s then president and deputy president together. Since then, ‘Unity’ has been the keyword that ensured a successful transition of power from Jacob Zuma to Cyril Ramaphosa. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had a passion for community development, advocacy and the mobilisation of community structures. She took a hands-on approach to community issues and worked in her community until her passing. Winnie Madikizela passed away on 2 April 2018, at age 81. She will be remembered among the great icons of the African liberation struggle who sacrificed everything in the fight against the brutal apartheid state.

India-SA Business Summit to grow trade partnership! Mapepeza Reporter
The first ever India-South Africa Business Summit (ISABS), which will be held later this month, will focus on doubling trade figures between the two countries, says India's High Commissioner to South Africa, Ruchira Kamboj. Addressing a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday (April 17), Kamboj said the summit is aimed at maximising the potential of economic relations between the two countries. “Trade figures between our countries stand roughly at US $10 billion and we would like to see that number doubling in the next coming years. We are confident that there is potential to double this figure. There are many sectors that our countries can cooperate in,” Kamboj said. The India-South Africa Business Summit will be held on 29 and 30 April at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.
The two-day business event will focus on start-ups, automotive, health care and pharmaceuticals sector, as well as mining. Other areas to be looked at are Agro-Processing, women in Business and the Fourth Industrial Revolution as these sectors have a potential for growth in a bilateral context. Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) Group Executive: Trade, Investment and Regulatory Enhancement, Muzi Mathema, said South Africa and India have strong trade relations
but this summit is an effort to push trade relations to the next level. “We have to bear in mind that we are in the dawn of a growing emerging market. In 50 years’ time, a third of the working force will either be in India or in other BRICS countries. If we don’t start taking these initiatives now, we won’t be able take advantage of the momentum in growth in our countries. The emphasis is that both our countries are open for business,” Mathema said.
He said the only way to grow the country’s economy is by expanding South Africa’s trade footprint. “That’s the one key challenge that we want to address: to grow the trade footprint as well as to grow the economy footprint of the Gauteng economy. Part of these efforts is to make sure that our businesses that are based in Gauteng get access to the right markets in India and are able to grow in order to address the growth challenge that we are faced
A special press briefing was held on Tuesday in Johannesburg on the upcoming India South Africa Business Summit, panelists included the High Commissioner for India to SA Ruchira Kamboj, Consulate-General of India (Johannesburg), GGDA Group Executive Muzi Mathema and the senior executive in the Department of Trade and Industry.
with as a country,” Mathema said. He said trade between India and South Africa ignites a lot of skills transfer, employment and transformative changes in key sectors. “This conference is important in fostering the historic and continuing relations between our countries as we forge ahead to become industrial nations,” Mathema said. The Summit will be held under the theme: “United by Legacy, Unified for Prosperity”. The event is being organised by the High Commission of India, in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India; the Department of Trade and Industry; Invest India; the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency.
India-SA Partnership
India and South Africa have a historical partnership that is over 200 years old. It was Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi, the Indian spiritual leader whose campaign of peaceful disobedience led Great Britain to grant India its independence in 1947, and who had begun his political activism in South Africa in the 1920s. Politically, the countries celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations this year. South Africa and India are members of the BRICS group of countries. Today, there are over 130 Indian companies trading in South Africa which employ over 18 000 citizens. Local companies that have invested into the India include FNB, Life Healthcare and many others. FUN FACT: Kwa-Zulu Natal province has one of the highest population of Indians outside India.

Ekurhuleni Travel and Tourism Non-Existent!

hen we talk about township tourism in South Africa, we immediately think of the cooling towers in Soweto or Langa Township in Cape Town; with their vibrant colours and street art. When one mentions ‘Ekurhuleni’, the response is often, “where is that?”. It is quite ironic that the largest international airport in the country, O R Tambo International, sits in the nameless City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).
