The ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus welcome the decision of the Council Meeting held today (26 April 2018)of referring to the Ethics and Integrity the allegations of receiving kickbacks by the ward Councillor of the Democratic Alliance (DA). According to a forensic investigative report, the allegations of corruption surfaced are against DA Councillor Cllr Samson “Shadow” Shabangu, who received from the developers of Springs Mall and other smaller ward projects. The councillor allegedly built a house in Piet Retief and bought a new Mercedes-Benz and Ford Ranger cars - all in cash. These allegations were received in April last year by the City of Ekurhuleni speaker Cllr Patricia Khumalo, who referred it to the MPAC (Municipal Public Accounts Committee). The committee later sent the matter for investigation by the Internal Audit Department. “We especially noted, the conclusion of the forensic report that the company Blue Crane Eco Mall (BCEM) contract from which the Councillor benefited R1,22 million was an inducement and represented “corrupt activity”, said the ANC Caucus Chief Whip Cllr Jongizi-

zwe Dlabathi in a statement. In the forensic report revealed to Mapepeza, the implicated councillor bought a vehicle from the funds earned through the questionable contract with the Developer (BCEM). “Furthermore, and as confirmed by the Developer, the Councillor enjoyed a holiday in Italy whose accommodation and other services were paid for by the developer’s friend. The forensic report also pointed to the fact that these (gifts) were not declared as required by section 7 of the Code of Conduct of Councillors. Although we are not passing a judgement on the DA Councillor, we restate our commitment to fight against corruption, fraud and maladministration both the level of officials and public representatives, who in particular, must set the tone by uphold acceptable level of conduct,” said Cllr Dlabathi. The forensic report suggest that the Speaker Cllr. Patricia Khumalo should press criminal charges against Cllr Shabangu at the Commercial Crimes Court for his role in the corrupt deal. After the case has been opened, the Speaker will confirm with a case number on the next Council meeting.

The official announcement of the nominees for the 2018 Township Entrepreneurship Awards (TEA) will be announced on May 18th. Details of the event are yet to be confirmed. The annual Township Entrepreneurship Awards were conceived by Gauteng Provincial Government as part of its effort to revitalize the township economy in line with the Gauteng Economic Development Plan. The aim of the TEA is to draw public attention towards township businesses and their successes, to unlock business opportunities in the townships and inspire investment confidence. The awards are aimed at providing a distinctive rostrum for township-based entrepreneurs and SMMEs to reach their full potential and be active players in the mainstream of our economy. Furthermore, the aim is to recognize, honour and reward those businesses that have contributed positively towards job creation and alleviation of poverty in townships. It is against this context that the Provincial Government recognises that entrepreneurship is one of the enablers for the Gauteng City Region and will help to in the relentless effort to tackle unemployment. The awards will cement confidence in townshipbased businesses and showcase the variations, capabilities and expertise that exist in township businesses. This year’s awards will feature a TV series programme that will follow the journey of the kasi entrepreneurs until the winners are announced later this year. CYBERBULLYING IN SOUTH AFRICA The increase in cyber technology has provided a new platform from which youth can bully each other; however the phenomenon of bullying is not a new thing. In order to understand cyber bullying as best as possible, it is important to understand the dynamics of traditional bullying first.

As cell phones are constantly being improved and upgraded, they allow more and more platforms for this online violence, such email platforms, the web, social networking sites and short messaging, as well as more traditional voice communication and smsing. Source: CJCP

‘Gauteng Govt. has spent over R11 billion on NPOs!’ MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza The Gauteng Provincial Government has spent over R11 billion to fund Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) in the past four years alone, Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza told stakeholders at Turffontein Race Course in Johannesburg on Thursday, May 3. She said by the end of the current political term, next year, R11 billion would have been invested in the Gauteng NPO sector. She said the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) is the second largest Gauteng Provincial Government’s (GPG) department after Education that is a significant contributor to the NPO sector (Annually GPG pays R7,2 billion and GDSD takes 33%).” “The NPO budget remains a bigger part of GDSD’s overall budget at 56% (R2,7 of R4,9) and this, in essence means that R10 billion was used to maintain existing social welfare and development services and R1 billion was used to expansion or introduction of new programmes,” said Mayathula-Khoza. She said government valued the work of NPOs because these organisations work is at the heart of the fight against hunger and poverty, war on substance abuse and gender based violence; care for vulnerable children, the elderly, peoples with disability; community wellbeing and economic empowerment especially for women and the black poor. The MEC said she is delighted to work with NPOs because the partnership minimised the negative impact of inflation through its annual 6% subsidy increments. The Gauteng Social Development department has organized an open day for all NGOs to pour their hearts out to the government. Issues on how they can best form a working and inclusive partnership so both parties can serve the vulnerable groups in communities better. The meetings will end on May 10th. - Mapepeza Reporter

Life STYLE Act while you still have time!

7 Whatever you give out, whatever you do to or for another person, or whatever you give out from yourself, comes back to you greatly multiplied in kind. Law of Increasing Returns (Napoleon Hill)

Grilled Chicken galore at Barcelos Ratanda!

Interview By: Bheki Julius Radebe

“Make Hay While The Sun Shines…” This is the quotation that bodybuilder Tumelo Mokoni (19) from Duduza in Nigel lives by. This quote means one must make money (or pursue a goal) while still living, so that poverty will not pursue you hen you’re old. Since from the beginning of the year, Mokoni started training hard to prepare for the weight-lifting Shameen Classic Competition, set to take place on May 5th (Saturday). Mokone says the reason most people fail in life is to plan, but sustain acting on their plans until it’s late. “No date is too far for me to prepare for any engagement. I start working on any mission as I set my mind into it, never procrastinate” says Mokone. He is set to win the Shameen Classic annual weight lifting competition hence he gives himself all the time to work on it, and has placed three months of preparations prior before it. Mokone, a grade 12 learner at Nigel High, spends three hours every day to the gym, and eats properly to maintain his weight balance.

Mokone is a former Alexandra Body building Show winner, obtaining a third place prize. He has also competed at the Gauteng Novice Show where he took first place. Thulani Radebe, owner of Body Perfect Vision Gym, where Mokone trains, says he has never seen a young man so determined and focused on his destination. He says if all our youth could adopt Mokone’s approach in life, they will definitely succeed. “He is young but has achieved a muscle that even most training men above his age have not attain in their training careers. And all that is because of loving his hobby and treating it like its golden,” says Radebe. The Body Perfect Vision gym is fully behind Mokone and will be there on the day of competition to cheer him up. The IFBB Shameen Classic competition will be held in Cape Town. The event was named after the country’s best body-builder Shameen Adams. Visit the website www.ifbbwp.co.za for more information.

Residents of Ratanda township and Heidelberg won’t have to travel too far for a great meal. Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken is a wellknown, industry-leading brand. From humble beginnings with one store in Pretoria the company started growing exponentially after they began franchising in 1998 and today Barcelos boasts an international footprint of over 100 outlets in more than 17 countries. The secret recipe to such a success comes from their Portuguese-style grilling process of all chicken meals. People cannot resist the well-done food at the most affordable prices. For under R200, the whole family (8

Events and meeting hosts are welcome for booking this space. The Ratanda store is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 20:00. Mamosa Turns Two! Gala dinner aims to raise funds

W

hen Mamosa Educational Institute started in 2016, it only had 33 grade R learners enrolled. Two years later that number rose to 163, and the grades stretched to grade 10. Last Saturday (April 28) the private school hosted a gala dinner event to celebrate its success and to reflect from its inception as a private school. Mamosa Educational Institute is only one that provides English as the first language of instruction in Duduza. Parents came in numbers to be part of the festivity and to watch their children perform in a range of productions from poetry, dance and theatre. The event was hosted to raise funds for the school as it is fully

independent. Its growth came with more responsibilities, such as building of more classrooms, adding leaner furniture and renovation of other classes. The school principal appealed to the potential donors among parents who might help the school especially, with a private property-space, where the school can operate on its own without renting the property. Currently it has occupied the Duduza Community Resource Centre, where it shares the space with other organisations and adult school with a total of classrooms. Parents says they brought their kids to Mamosa for its unique method of teaching. “They put each child on spotlight, which allows every kid an opportunity to shine,” says Veli Busana, one of the parents.

“I don’t regret choosing this school as the first choice for my child. They live up to their motto that says ‘Unleash Potential,’ and they give each kid a one on one session - lessons. Their school extra-moral activities have potential to channel children’s careers to blossom,” says Malebo Matsega. Mamsi Ndlalani, founder and principal of Mamosa Educational Institute, who is the former teacher and principal to government schools with 20 years of experience in teaching, says her vision to create the school was to prove that even township schools can provide quality education.

ADVERTORIAL - Department of Science and Technology

Hydrogen fuel cell technology brings power to rural school!

L

earners at Poelano Secondary School in Ventersdorp are not only experiencing first-hand the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology (HFCT), but are also learning about the technology itself.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko KubayiNgubane, launched the R10 million renewable energy system on Friday, 13 April 2018. The 2,5 kW HFCT system, installed last month, has enabled the school's 486 pupils to have access to low-cost, off-grid, primary clean energy for ICT and lighng needs. Fuel cells produce electricity through a chemical reacon, using hydrogen as the basic fuel and planum-based catalysts. The system uses solar photovoltaic panels, which convert energy from the sun into electricity. Since water is needed to produce the

hydrogen for the fuel cells, and there are water shortages in Poelano, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) installed a borehole to ensure the successful implementaon of the project. The school now has a reliable water supply as well as a reliable power supply.

HFCT standby power soluons are efficient, safe and quiet, ensuring a non-intrusive standby and potenally primary power soluon. The project also provides an opportunity to demonstrate to learners, teachers and the community that science can solve socio-economic problems in rural areas. The project was implemented through the Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) Programme, a DST iniave promong the use of local planum group metal (PGM) resources to create knowledge

and skills, and enabling the development of high-value commercial acvies in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

South Africa is endowed with about 75% of global PGM reserves, located in North West and Limpopo, and there are various iniaves aimed at beneficiang the resources.

Minister Kubayi-Ngubane, who addressed Friday's launch, said the HySA Programme had huge potenal for local manufacturing and mineral beneficiaon. The Minister said that the beneficiaon of South Africa's natural resources was one way in which the country would be able to expand its industrial base, creang jobs and reducing poverty and

inequality. The launch included an exhibion showcasing a wide variety of HFCT and solar energy products. Pupils from schools in the Ventersdorp area were able to learn about these alternave energy technologies, and had the opportunity to interact with the sciensts involved in their development. They also received informaon about the value of studying science, and were encouraged by the Minister to consider the many career opportunies offered by science. Learners Tshegofatso Motaung and Mantshonyane Keleabetswe, both in Grade 12, welcomed the technology, as it ensured that the

school always had power. Mantshonyane thanked the DST for the project. "I have learned that science and technology can help bring innovaon to communies and this project has made life easier for all of us," she said. The Minister appealed to parents to protect the infrastructure that government had brought into the community for their children's benefit. The Principal of Poelano Secondary School, Gerald Mhlanga, echoed the Minister's senments. "The most important thing for us is to make sure we maintain the project and benefit many generaons to come," he said.
