22 CAR COLLISSION ON N17 SPRINGS!
One truck driver was critically injured, two others were in a serious but stable conditions after a five-car accident on the N3 south bound opposite Vosloorus.
One driver died and three other motorists sustained minor injuries after a pile-up of 22 vehicles on the N17 freeway in Springs on Friday, July 14. Both West and East bounds experienced crashes at the same time probably because of grass fire that was burning along the freeway (pictured above).
The crash was reported on Wednesday afternoon (July 12) by a Traffic Officer who came to Vosloorus fire station to report. Four trucks and a light motor vehicle were involved in a crash. The critically injured driver was trapped behind the steering wheel and Rescue Team had to use Jaws of Life to recover him from the wreckage. Per information on scene, the crash was caused by the heavy dense smoke from the grass fire burning alongside the freeway and subsequently, the pile-up occurred.

ay "Chikapa" Enock Phiri was an internationally-acclaimed music legend who contributed immensely to the advancement of creative arts in South Africa. Mr Phiri was also honoured with the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for his sterling contribution to the South African music industry and the successful use of arts as an instrument of social transformation. Phiri made his biggest impact on music as a member of Afro-fusion group Stimela, which he founded in the 1970s. Stimela was among the groups who made music that inspired black South Africans to carry on fighting apartheid. Even though the music was banned by the apartheid government, it was still hugely popular at intimate gatherings. One of the group’s most memorable tracks is titled Whispers in The Deep or Phinda Mzala.
Ray Phiri was laid to rest in Mpumalanga on July 22 with a Special Provicial Funeral for him.
CHIKAPA’S WISH TO MUSICIANS In an interview with national press on November 2014, Ray Phiri poured his heart out to give advice to South Africans. “In the old days, the enemy was very clear – it was apartheid. We weren’t only focused on being musicians, we also had the responsibility to be voices of the people who were silenced.” Phiri always hoped to inspire young musicians to sing for a purpose larger than just entertainment. “There are so many struggles out country is faced with now: illiteracy, the abuse of power, HIV and Aids. Artists should be at the forefront of spreading awareness on these issues. I wish everyone in this country felt like they wanted to serve this country through their work,” he said.
When Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) Rescue teams arrived on scene, the grass was still burning and wind blowing smoke across the freeway. Selection Park and Kwa-Thema rescue crews promptly responded out to the scene to render medical assistance. The deceased was still trapped behind the vehicle and Jaws of Life was used to recover her from the wreckage. The casualties were transported to N17 hospital for further medical care.

Mamoepa was a former political prisoner and member of the Gauteng provincial legislature, was a highly regarded and accomplished public servant and veteran communicator who served the African National Congress and various departments in government with distinction", the Presidency said. Mamoepa was a well known figure in media circles, having communicated the views and comments of various government ministers on topics as diverse as the Sudanese peace talks and the controversy over the Dalai Llama's planned visit many years ago. He was also a spokesperson for Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma when she was Home Affairs minister. According to a book titled Robben Island, by Charlene Smith, Mamoepa's involvement as an ANC member during the struggle was very visible as ‘he was a kid knew the slogans and songs by heart, and could raise his knees higher than most in the toyi-toyi,’ the book stated. Smith said Mamoepa was convicted for terrorism in 1980, at just 18 years of age.

During the 2017/18 financial year, the Gauteng Department of Social Development will distribute 540 000 dignity packs prioritising orphaned and vulnerable girl children within disadvantaged schools across the 15 Education Districts in Gauteng. “Through the Radical Economic Transformation and Township Economy Revitalisation, we utilise black women-owned cooperatives to manufacture and package the dignity packs. Similar mechanism is used in the provision of a basket of services to orphaned and vulnerable children in the province such as free school uniforms, free basic health care, free psycho-social support, free scholar transport, free school nutrition and free dignity packs.” “Based on the increase demands in schools, the annual targets for the Department had increased by 100 % in the subsequent years,” said Mayathula-Khoza.
NMMU becomes NMU Speaking at the relaunch, Deputy Presidency Cyril Ramaphosa said the university must strive to uphold all the values the late struggle icon Nelson Mandela stood for. These include non-racialism‚ non-sexism‚ honesty‚ truth and integrity. “This university must be at the forefront of efforts to make higher education accessible to the poor and marginalised. This university must be at the forefront of efforts to ensure that higher education is an instrument for the achievement of social equality – that it does not simply perpetuate privilege.” The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth has relaunched itself as the Nelson Mandela University (NMU).
On Wednesday (July 19), Minister Dlamini met with the staff and made the announcement. This follows a mutual agreement reached between Minister Dlamini and the former CEO Thokozani Magwaza to end his contract of employment. The Minister said the first priority of the acting CEO is to stabilise the Agency and to ensure that it focuses on its Constitutional mandate of administering and paying social grants in line with the SASSA Act. – SAnews.gov.za

Most of us who have tried every trick in the book to be the best we could be, and have failed. We somehow think that we have a right to be negative, rude and miserable. We sometimes hold a belief that since everyone knows how hard we have tried and the efforts that we have displayed, we then feel that of all the people in the world we have a right to give up. We even create a situation whereby we drive away those who love and care for us, we talk ourselves out of future opportunities and endeavours; we discard ourselves from fruitful relationships thinking that of all the people who have failed we are the worst. We become so selfish, arrogant and ending up taking our own lives. No matter the situation “there is no honour in committing suicide”. Here we see a prophet who has won one of the greatest battles in the history of the bible, through faith he single-handedly killed more than 400 prophets of Baal through Gods power. It was such a victory that even the king was shaken by this; however the victory was short lived as the wife to the king sent the prophet a letter threatening him. Upon receiving the letter the prophet of God was so frightened in that he asked God to take his life. Indeed champions do get frightened at times. Maybe you are also in the same situation as the prophet of God and think that because of the doctor’s report, school results or your failures and short falls God has forgotten about you. Do not be discouraged by your current situation. Friends, colleagues and family may forget about you, but God will not forget you, Don’t kill yourself, Get up, and eat. There are buildings that you still need to build, there are lives that you still need to change with your story and victories that awaits you, there are companies that you still need to build. God is not done with you. Get Up and keep walking. Shalom.
