INTRODUCING THE SUNSTREAM™ PANEL
ON December 8, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality together with the Departments of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), launched the Safer Paraffin Stoves campaign at Vusimuzi Informal Settlement in Tembisa. As part of the campaign, which is intended to raise awareness on the possible dangers when using paraffin stoves, over 1 500 new safer stoves were handed to community members. In meeting government half way to ensure safety in the informal settlement, Vusimuzi residents came in numbers to hand over their old hazardous and non-compliant stoves, in exchange for the new safer ones.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, highlighted that the State is serious about safeguarding residents’ lives by excluding the suppliers of poor quality stoves that tend to contribute to the fires that often destroy informal settlements across the country. “Each year over 200 000 people are affected by deaths caused by fires, mostly due to noncompliant appliances that are sold as a money making scheme at the expense of people’s lives and this has to stop,” said Davies. “Government, together with the National Consumer Commission and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications have tightened our grip to find and stop suppliers of non-compliant stoves that are illegally shipped into and manufactured in the A technological revolution has given rise to the only device that charges any mobile phone with direct light from the sun. MEET THE SUNSTREAM This is a brilliant product for South Africa as it uses the power of the sun, which we have lots of, to power devices without the need for electricity and plug points. It's excellent for rural areas, during power outages, and on the beach or in wilderness areas. It's also very robust. It's completely submersible in water and can survive a fall of up to 2m. The SunStream World Panel is made from shatterproof glass, a strong polymer case and it won't heat up in the sun. It has no chipset or printed circuit board – basically, it's tough. “I originally visited Africa with a solar prototype for household purposes and was consistently asked by residents whether it could charge their phones. I’ve returned with a product that is essential for anyone who owns a mobile phone but who has limited access to dependable energy sourc-

ber of the Pan-Africanist Congress of Azania (or PAC in short), talking about the life and legacy of the revolutionary leader Robert Sibukwe, who was born on December 5th (the same day Nelson Mandela died last year). All my life I have never heard of any man that organized the native South Africans towards the mission of Africanism. Like many of my generation, we know only of the likes Mandela, Biko and the ANC. But, before the country-wide adoption of the Freedom Charter by the Congress of the People in the 1960s, the liberation struggle was aimed at achieving the realization of the Afrianism ideals. I feek that the remedy that our forefathers used to free the land and laws for all native Africans, lies buried deep within the teachings and philosophies of our leaders, heroes and heroines in the fight for freedom against neo-colonialism. My choice of examples include: Marcus Garvey, Patrice Lamumba, Malcom X, Steve Biko and Emperor Haile Selassie I.
As from 14 October 2015 until April 2016, the Gauteng Provincial Government will be rolling out a campaign titled “Qondisa ishishini lakho” which means fix your business. The Qondis’ Ishishini Lakho campaign is part of the township economy revitalization project, one of the key deliverables of the Gauteng Provincial Government. Through this campaign, the provincial government aims to ensure that businesses in the townships are formalised through registration.
This will enable them to qualify for business advisory services, financing, upskilling through partnerships, investment etc. and providing services to the public and private sector. The campaign will be delivered in two phases and extended to all Gauteng townships. The first phase will not only create awareness of the forthcoming campaign but also comprehen-THE EDITOR sively prepare aspirant business owners for the
company registration requirements and processes. The first phase will thus not only detail the requirements of establishing a company but the responsibility that comes with growing and managing a business. It will highlight the importance of understanding one’s market and that not all business ideas are viable. The second phase of the campaign will see the provision of company registration services in over 100 townships across the province. Starting a business is not easy, and it’s made harder if one does not have knowledge of what is required to run a business as well as having access to services that can help to ensure that the business succeeds. The Gauteng Provincial government has heeded the call from township entrepreneurs and business owners, and we want to help you so that you can contribute effectively to the growth of our economy. Ms. Ramashamole was born in Sharpeville on 31 August 1960. Her mother, Mrs. Julia Ramashamole was part of the huge crowd that converged on the Sharpeville police station on March 21, 1960. The demonstration was part of a campaign of peaceful defiance intended to end the pass laws, which regulated the movement of blacks. The police opened fire on the crowd and 69 people were killed and 186 wounded; many of them shot in the back. Mrs. Ramashamole, three months pregnant with Theresa was uninjured. Twenty-four years later in Sharpeville, on September 3, 1984, her daughter was struck on the head by a rubber bullet as she took part in a protest against rent increases.

Ms. Ramashamole was tried in the Pretoria Supreme Court along with Mojalefa Sefatsa, Reid Mokoena, Oupa Diniso, Duma Khumalo, and Francis Mokhesi. The accussed, commonly known as the Sharpeville Six, were charged with the September 1984 murder of Jacob Dlamini, a Lekoa township councilor. They were convicted and sentenced to death on 5 December 1985 for their alleged “association with the crowd” that killed Dlamini, although the trial judge and appeals court acknowledged that there was no direct evidence involving them with the murder.

JACO DEPARTS WITH BLESSINGS!
Dlamini was killed by protesters on 3 September, also known as the ‘Vaal uprising’ when he refused to join a protest march against rent increases. Instead he pulled out a gun and fired on the protesters. Ms. Ramashamole was accused of inciting the crowd to kill Dlamini and not of participating in the attack herself. A single unnamed witness, whom the defense described as unreliable, said he overheard her saying, ‘He’s shooting, let’s kill him’ when Dlamini opened fire on the crowd. Ramashamole denied this. She said she had attended part of the march – in fact she was hit on the head by a police rubber bullet earlier the same morning. In November 1984, when Ramashamole was arrested, she was stripped and tortured with electric shocks which led to the loss of her womb. She suffered further injury during the course of the trial when her arm was broken in a police vehicle. A number of co-accused also suffered torture before and during the trial. International public pressure from December 1985 to November 1988 played a significant role in delaying the execution of the Sharpeville Six. The United Nations Security Council called on South Africa to commute the death sentences of the Six, saying the matter had caused international condemnation. Appeals for clemency had been made over the 3 years Theresa and the others were on death row, by UN Secretary General Perez de Cuellar, President Reagan, British Prime Minister Thatcher, West German Chancellor Kohl, French Prime Minister Chirac, and Amnesty International. The conservative Daily Telegraph of Britain said that to hang six people merely for having been in the vicinity of the murder was not retribution, but the same crime six times over. Although he had turned down clemency before, the then apartheid South African President P.W. Botha commuted the death sentences of the Sharpeville Six on November 23, 1988. The group instead will serve prisoner terms ranging from 18 to 25 years. Theresa Ramashamole was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and is currently the woman serving the longest sentence in South Africa. "She leaves a legacy for generations to come who will, in decades ahead of us, continue to enjoy the fruits that democracy has brought to their communities across the length and breadth of our country, including Sharpeville her hometown," said the executive mayor.

ENGAGING, EDUCATING & EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES!
Ever since we have released our first edition two years ago... This newspaper has not only reached a variety of communities around the southern-Gauteng region with local news and information, But has also served consistently to become the province’s independent MAHALA newspaper. Mapepeza Community Newspaper strives to inform and influence the diverse people of South Africa towards the aspirations of a free country - one community at a time.
In 2016, the newspaper will become a multi-media platform, shifting from the original print media to an expanded new digital website. The printed newspaper will be still going strong, with a promise of more ‘people-centered’ approach to reporting and writing. Mapepeza will start telling the untold stories of ordinary people in this country, supporting all points of view. Advertising budgets will be maximized to get the best leads, using the print and digital media at the same time, at very affordable and lasting rates. Another major suprise is the name change to the newspaper. Mapepeza Community Newspaper will now be called Mapepeza Newspaper, reflecting the major changes to take place next year.
