Youth rally brings hope against drug abuse! O

n Saturday, June 23, concerned members of the Ratanda Township community and the surrounding areas joined the Heal Our Land rally at Woza Africa Centre. Heal Our Land is an initiative aimed at organized by Mrs Pat Mahlangu and a group of multiracial young people from the Lesedi region. The team led a successful event, where people of all ages and backgrounds showed their support. Stakeholders included the local police, community social workers and music groups. This rally was dedicated to reaching the hopeless youth in the Ratanda/Heidelberg areas, this is done by actively fighting against the crime and drug abuse. Heal Our Land gives young people who are aff ected by such common social ills, and gives them a chance to have hope for the future. At a youth rally African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) President and Member of Parliament (MP) Reverend Kenneth Meshoe said African people could only be lifted up by themselves. At the Youth Against Moral Decay event, which was organised by the anti-crime and anti-drugs NPO Heal Our Land, he said they should identify their challenges and decide what to do about them. The ACDP President commended the work done on rehabilitating drug addicts at the Woza Africa Centre where the event was held, but said prevention is better than cure. “Drugs can be eradicated. People know the drug dealers and they know where the drug dens are, said the MP. Rev. Meshoe said the solution to unemployment was to educate South Africans, “so we can make jobs for ourselves” –which was why the ACDP had publically opposed the recent move to make history compulsory. “Where will someone with a South African Masters in History be employed overseas? But someone with a South African Masters in Economics and Mathematics will easily find work there,” he said. Organiser of the Youth Against Moral Decay event and CEO of Heal Our Land, Mrs Mahlangu said parties like the ACDP are mindful of the tangible problems of the community. She said the party’s president, Rev Meshoe came all the way to Ratanda to be part of the event. Reminiscing about the strikes of 1976, MaMahlangu told her audience that they were started by Christians. Having lived in Orlando at the time, she was able to remember some of the key players. She also pointed out that not only Soweto youth had died – there were a number of youth who died also in Vosloorus. Master of Ceremonies of the event, Bayanda Radebe, who – like a few of his colleagues – was sporting a Madiba path, kept the programme on track. “Let us not support those manipulating us for our votes but those championing our cause,” he told the youth. Nyaope survivor Piet Mtshali had words of wisdom for those contemplating using drugs. There is no point, he said, in “dancing in the mud and complaining that you are dirty. Smoking nyaope because things are difficult at home does not make sense either, he said. “If you are smoking nyaope, things will still be difficult at home.” Mtshali started his painful drug journey with dagga and cigarettes at the age of 14. He was introduced to

mandrax in matric and then smoked nyaope, which he calls “low-grade heroin”, for seven years. By the grace of God, Mtshali has been clean for three years. Mlungisi gave God the credit for delivering him from his 20-year drug habit. When he handed over his life to God, he was able to change, he said. Mlungisi’s parents died when he was only 12 years old, and he was left with only friends for support. It was then that he started using drugs. Despite that, he said the problem is not the drugs but the decisions we make. “We are educating kids but not teaching them how to deal with life issues,” he said. Mlungisi advised communities wanting to rid their neighbourhoods of drug dealers to make petitions and take them to the police. Born-again Christian Andrew Tau urged the youth to stay away from crime. He spoke about his time as an armed robber, which ended dramatically one night as he lay face-down on a road in Mpumalanga. A helicopter was circling above him and his gang, and the end of a SAPS rifle was stuck in his face. Tau has almost finished writing a book about his experiences. Social worker Ms Pat Diatshwana called on parents of recovering addicts undergoing rehabilitation to show them love and support. She inspired the youth with the story of how she dealt with her heart-rending childhood experience as a victim of crime. Instead of allowing her suffering to embitter her, she had qualified as a social worker at the age of 22 so as to help others faced with the same situation.

The programme also included two insightful poetry readings and a number of musical items. The crowd was entertained by the vibrant young voices of Lesedi Show Choir, as well as by dynamic gospel artist Phakathi Radebe.

The South African Post Office (Sapo) has swapped over one million social grants beneficiaries to the new South African Social Security (SASSA) card which is being issued by Postbank. The Post Office has been gazetted as the preferred payment channel for all social grants in South Africa. The old white SASSA card will be phased out by 30 September and should be exchanged for the new gold SASSA card. Card swapping can be done at SASSA offices nationally on any working day as well as at all the SASSA paypoints during a payment cycle. The new SASSA card operates fully within the national payment system and it has the following benefits for social grants beneficiaries: • Three cash withdrawals from any participating merchant, such as Shoprite, Boxer, etc; • One free over the counter cash withdrawal at the Post Office; • Unlimited free swipes or purchase payments at all merchants; • 1 free ATM balance enquiry per month. • The only deduction permitted is for funeral policies, up to no more than 10% of the grant value.

themselves they are confident to make goals and to pursue those goals. Steps to help through Self-discovery; 1.Do you know yourself? Can you give a full description of self? 2.Are you clear about what you want? 3.Do you have a sense of purpose? 4.What defines you? 5.What makes you happy? Honesty with oneself is very critical in this process, one can not grow if they can’t be honest through the self-discovery process. We live in a century were young people conform because they are scared to be themselves. They then in return become victims of peer pressure, abuse and low self-esteem. With peer pressure they will believe what others say about them and are influenced to participate in things that affect them psychologically and become like caged birds all their lives. With abuse they will believe the abuser and start blaming themselves and will accept the abuse and become scared to speak up and break through. Advice from MoTsha to our teens. Know yourself so well that you can have a voice, you can claim your rightful place in society, so that you can chase your dreams with confidence. When you know yourself so well you will never see the need to compete. Do you and stay in your lane always.

Knowing and loving “Self”

n order to love who you are, you cannot hate the experiences that shaped you. We all come from different families and backgrounds. Young people struggle with accepting their current economic situations and this makes them struggle with selflove and self-acceptance. One can not achieve their dreams if they are not fully aware of who they are. It starts in high school, when selecting subjects and choosing a career. It then comes to maintaining relationships (with friends, in school, at home and in the society). People struggle with socialization when they don’t know who they are. It may all sound like a cliché but knowing what you need and taking it is key. But how does one know what they need when they don’t know who they are?

Knowing yourself is not about skimming the surface like finding your favourite colour or music you like. Knowing yourself is about delving much deeper. Knowing yourself is a journey. It is about discovering who you are as a human being. The real YOU! The journey is unpredictable and engages you deeply as it brings you face to face with your deepest fears, self-doubt, vulnerabilities and insecurities. The journey around knowing yourself can be very scary. Not knowing yourself can be an obstacle to living a purposeful life and achieving success. Success is achieved by people who know themselves, because when one knows

2018 marks 63 anniversary of Freedom Charter! rd

T

he Freedom Charter was the statement of core principles of the South African Congress Alliance, which consisted of the African National Congress and its allies the South African Indian Congress, the South African Congress of democrats and the Coloured People’s Congress. It is characterized by itsopening demand; The People Shall Govern! In 1955, the ANC sent out fifty thousand volunteers countrywide to collect ‘freedom demands’ from the people of South Africa. This system was designed to give all South Africans equal rights. demands such as “land to be given to all landless people”, “living wages and shorter hours of work”, “free and compulsory education, irrespective of colour, race or nationality” were synthesized into the final document by ANC leaders in-

cluding Z.K. Mathews and Lionel ‘rusty’ Bernstein. The Charter was officially adopted on June 26, 1955 at a Congress of the People in Kliptown. The meeting was attended by roughly three thousand delegates but was broken up by police on the second day, although by then the charter had been read in full. The crowd had shouted its approval of each section with cries of ‘iAfrika!’ and ‘Mayibuye!’

The ANC was banned and 156 activists were arrested, including Nelson Mandela who was first imprisoned in 1962. However, the charter continued to circulate in the underground and inspired a generations of young militants. On february 11 1990, Nelson Mandela was finally freed and the ANC came to power after the first democratic elections were held in South Africa in April 1994. The new Constitution of South Africa included in its text many of the demands called for in the freedom Charter. Nearly all the enumerated concerns regarding equality of race and language were directly addressed in the constitution, although the document included nothing to the effect of the nationalization of industry or redistribution of land, both of which were specifically outlined in the charter. The same blood that gave me life, is the very same blood that can be the poison to me that take my life one day. Because I was born to win the battle. The sun doesn't forget to come out, because you were born to win the battle. The stars does not forget to shine, because you were born to win the battle. The water doesn't forget to flow, because you were born to fight and win the battle. You were born to win the battle!!! Sports Which country will lift the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia? Send us your views on Facebook & Twitter

Knockout stages will produce new champs after Germany exit early! The Fifa World Cup group stages have become the most unpredictable (and exciting) part of the tournament, producing shocking results in most games. Defending champions, Germany, were defeated 2-0 by South Korea. The Germans have never failed to past the group stages since 1939, but the four time winners who were seen by most as favourites to win, lost their position to group leaders Sweden. Senegal came close to making it to the last 16, but Columbia secured a 1-0 victory to finish top of Group H. Despite Japan’s loss to Poland, they luckily make it though with a ‘Tally points’ decision

- they have less yellow cards than the West African side. The team was the last of the African nations to exit the World Cup. Nigeria lost 2-1 against Argentina in their last qualifying match. That match saw Argentine captain, Lionel Messi (pictured), open the scoring with a beautiful goal. Victor Moses scored a penalty to level the game, but the controversial VAR (VideoAssisted Referee) system saved the day when Nigeria were denied a hand-ball penalty. Into the finishing hours of the game, the

Africa returns home after crashing in Russia.

South American team scored through a strike by Marcus Rojo. The last 16 teams have been defined and the games continue, with France and Argentina opening the highly anticipated phase of the tournament.

to 4 went head-to-head. Executive Mayor also received food parcel donations from Albany on the day, these will assist in feeding the beneficiaries at the local drop-in centres in Dipaleseng. In commemorating youth month, the tournament is aimed at fighting social ills that continues to plaque our society particularly the youth, under the theme “Sport for Life”. Hopefully, the municipality will continue the tradition in the coming years, as it has bought the young people together under one cause.
