#100MenMarch a success!
Scores of people descended on the capital city on Tuesday morning (July 10) to pledge their support of the #100MenMarch in an effort to stop violence against women and children. Men from various sectors of society, including government, business, labour, faith-based organisations, non-profit and media organisations, who are marching against the abuse of women and children marched from the Kgosi Mampuru and
Madiba streets and ended on the southern lawns of the Union Buildings. Ministers and Deputy Ministers - supported by representatives from various faithbased organisations and societal formations - all took turns on stage to denounce the rampant abuse of women and children. They all made a call for men to respect and protect the vulnerable in society and for women to stand up for their rights. Leaders from different sectors of society have vowed to play
a significant role to curb the scourge of violence against women and child abuse. Police Minister Bheki Cele, who was joined by National Police Commissioner General John Sitole and hundreds of cadets from the police academy, urged police not to turn away women who seek assistance at stations. “The [spirit of the march] should be every day. It should not just be today and you go home and do exactly what you are not supposed to do.

Front page Story: #100MenMarch “Men, we have invited you here, especially the young men training as police… When a woman says ‘no’; it must be ‘no’. “When these women come battered, bruised [and] bloodied at the police station, don’t turn them back home to negotiate because next time she won’t come home. By the time she doesn’t come back to the police station, she’ll be dead. Let’s make sure we don’t send them back because sending her back is sending her to her death.” Javu Baloyi, the spokesperson for the Commission for Gender Equality, described the march as historic.

“For the first time, we are partnering with government, faith-based and civil society organisations and Chapter Nine institutions… We’ve had enough. “We want to see the scourge being arrested. We have realised that we have been working in silos. We are going to go to the provinces and make sure that all those committing barbaric, heinous acts are removed and locked away,” he said. The reason behind the #100MenMarch is to curb the shocking statistics according to Statistics South Africa, stating that the country has seen a 117% increase in cases of gender-based violence between 2015 and 2016/17.

BMF condemns the intimidation of PRASA Board Chairperson! The Black Management Forum (the BMF) has condemned the hijacking and kidnapping of PRASA Board Chairperson Khanyisile Kweyama. They see the hijacking and kidnapping as criminal acts and want strong action should be taken against those behind these acts. “This investigation must be top priority for law enforcement agencies, said the organization in a statement. Acccording to BMF, the incidents were aimed at intimidating Ms Kweyama who leads the currently embattled State-Owned company. “Ms Kweyama is known to lead and serve with integrity. As the SABC’s interim Board Chair, she was decisive and clear about the direction the SABC needed to take moving forward. She has brought this clarity and decisiveness to PRASA which should be welcomed. These scare tactics are aimed at derailing the investigation of maladministration, corruption and state capture at PRASA. There are many who are opposed to the investigation and have now turned to senseless criminal acts to disrupt the investigation and progress in turning the entity around,” said BMF. The forum also said Ms Kweyama and her board members should be left to do their work without interference and to ensure that PRASA practices good corporate governance and that its leaders are accountable.
New process for getting police clearance certificate! To get rid of identity fraud, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is introducing a new process for obtaining a police clearance certificate (PCC). SAPS has devised one such method to improve security measures to mitigate this risk. A police clearance certificate is a document issued by the SAPS Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management stating whether or not any criminal offence has been recorded against the person. It's a document which provides confirmation of a person’s criminal status.
When and how will the effects take place?
Members of the public are no longer expected to deliver their documentation to the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria, as was previously the practice. It is now the sole responsibility of the SAPS to compile and deliver the form to the Criminal Record Centre (CRC) on behalf of the applicant.
Any costs involved?
This service is rendered at R114 per application. The required tariff is payable in cash at the nearest police station, by bank-guar-
anteed cheque, banker’s draft or electronic payment in the SAPS account in favour of the National Commissioner. Bank details: ABSA cheque account number 4054522787, Branch code 632005, Swift code ABSA ZAJJ According to the SAPS, in the case of an electronic payment, the letters ‘PCC’ followed by the initials and surname of the applicant must be indicated as the reference. The letters ‘PCC’ will indicate that the payment is for a police clearance certificate. Proof of payment must be attached to the application (SAPS 91(a), which will be provided to the applicant at his/her nearest police station.
What’s the process?
The first step to obtaining a police clearance certificate is to visit your nearest police station in SA and notify a member of the SAPS that you wish to apply for a SA police clearance certificate. The member will then guide you accordingly to the relevant member who will be
responsible for the processing of your application. The applicant will be expected to subject himself/herself for a full set of fingerprints for the (SAPS 91a), which is the SA police clearance certificate form. The applicant must ensure that he or she is in possession of a copy of his or her South African identity document or in possession of his or her official passport, a copy of which will be certified at the police station and attached to the application. The applicant must provide a statement regarding his/her previous convictions and indemnify the SAPS against any liability which may result from furnishing information in this regard. Finalised police clearance certificates will be returned to the station of origin and the applicant will be contacted for collection. Upon collection, the applicant must again present the original Identity document or passport as confirmation of identity. For full detailed information on this procedure visit www.saps.gov.za.

Gauteng, UJ partner to use technologies in service delivery!
The fourth industrial revolution has dawned upon everyone, and the age of smart devices and artificial intelligence grows ever more as technology changes rapidly. On Tuesday, July 10 the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Gauteng department of Infrastructure Development (GPDID) signed a five-year partnership to use smart technologies to enhance delivery of infrastructure (pictured above). The MEC Jacob Mamabolo and UJ Vice-Chancellor Professor Tshilidzi Marwala signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the GPDID House in Johannesburg. This is a commitment between the two institutions to cooperate in deploying innovative technologies in the delivery of public property like schools, clinics and community centres. A few months ago, the provincial department became a leader in deploying smart technologies when they launched the Drone Programme to monitor their list of pipeline projects. The drone, which is the first to be used to monitor infrastructure projects in conjunction with the business intelligence house in GPDID’s nerve centre, Lutsinga Infrastructure House. “This new intervention essentially combines human intelligence, business intelligence and now artificial intelligence to ensure that the entire value chain of project deliver is efficient and that projects are delivered in time, within cost and at the right quality,” said MEC Jacob Mamabolo during the drone launch in Ekurhuleni. UJ is the largest university in Johannesburg and prides itself as the university of the fourth in industrial revolution in the African continent. “The fourth industrial revolution is upon us and it will have a tremendous impact on every aspect of our lives. To understand it, one needs to understand the history of industrial revolutions. So, it is a great pleasure to sign this certificate of partnership which will help us serve our people,” said Professor Marwala. The world acclaimed leading scholar on artificial intelligence, Professor Marwala also pointed out that his grandmother was his first engineering teacher who taught him how to predict the failure of buildings in advance. “It means we should incorporate indigenous knowledge systems into our curriculum, research and innovation agenda. Which means that Africans should not be alienated from science.” “At the University of Johannesburg, we offer courses in vibration analysis, signals and systems, thermodynamics and artificial intelligence. These are necessary to take the framework I was taught by my grandmother into the fourth industrial revolution,” he said Prof Marwala. He added that the partnership would ensure that South Africa is not a follower, but that the country also becomes part of fourth fourth industrial revolution. Both DID and UJ certify the fact that students are at the core of the partnership. According to Prof. Marwala, each graduating student owes six hours of voluntary community work in their respective fields of study. “On the 26 July, we will be the hosting a lead-up event, unveiling the inhouse training capabilities of the Department, as part of the Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations and Mandela month, confirmed MEC Mamabolo. This launch will unveil the programme for training of EPWP personnel to get skills fit for the fourth industrial revolution. The Resolution Circle will work with the departent in creating programmes to cater for the new initiative. According to MEC Mamabolo, the department’s 340 pipleline projects for public infrastructure over the next three years. The 60 platinum projects (due to be competed by this year) will be used to deploy students to use their hours in the department. An opportunity for all students in the built environment and construction sectors can be available. “Some graduates are unemployed. Using the Tshepo 1 Million programme in the province, we can make sure that no young person in the construction and built-environment must not have nowhere to got when looking for opportunities,” he confirmed.

This year the International Nelson Mandela Day coincides with Madiba’s Centenary and presents us with an opportunities to reflect on his legacy and to continue to honour Mandela’s work for societal liberation. This Mandela Month is a national call to action for every citizen to play their part in addressing some of the issues in their respective communities. Mandela Day should remain a day of service and it should not lose its essence. Government calls on all sectors of society to ensure the sustainability of Mandela Day initiatives. We ought to tap into Madiba’s values and aspirations for the type of a South Africa he

A huge sigh of relief came to the "Sharpeville Six" after Justice Minister Kobie Coetsee granted them an indefinite stay of execution. Initially there were eight people charged, but Christian Mokubung and Gideon Mokone were released earlier. “The Sharpeville Six” were found guilty of murdering Sharpeville Deputy Mayor Jacob Kuzwayo Dlamini, who was beaten and burnt to death by an angry mob on 3 September 1984. They faced execution once convicted. Before the murder of Dhlamini, Sharpeville residents were protesting against rent increases by the town council. The rent boycott was also a general protest against corrupt councillors and the unjust apartheid system. Three months after the incident the "Sharpeville Six" were arrested, tried and sentenced. They spent four years on death row. Their death penalties were later commuted to prison sentences, ranging from twenty-five years to life. Reprieve came in 1991 when negotiations between liberation organisations and the apartheid government led to the release of all political prisoners. The "Sharpeville Six" were granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) but were never compensated for their ordeal in prison.

Gauteng Government intensifies fight against gender-based violence! writes Sibusiso Chauke
B
ack in August last year, the Gauteng Premier David Makhura launched the Gauteng Provincial Government’s ‘Invest in a Girl Child & Empower a Young Woman’ campaign to respond to challenges facing girl children and young women in the province. The campaign was urgently required, to respond the sudden lot of killings against women and children in South Africa, a phenomenon known as femicide. While women, girls, men and boys can be victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the focus is on violence against women and girls. This is not to say that GBV against men does not exist. Men can also become victims of violence in the family by partners or children.
On the 25th of each month Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza will lead a team of government officials as part of the global fight against gender based violence as the United Nations Campaign UNiTE to end violence against women has proclaimed the 25th of each month as “Orange Day.” The team will make visits to various shelters of abuse survivors. The Orange Day calls upon activists, governments, and communities to mobilize people and highlight issues relevant to preventing and ending violence against women and girls. MEC Mayathula-Khoza also highlighted the department’s reaction on this issue during the budget vote on the 29th of June 2018 at Gauteng Legislature. She said, “Social crime
and gender based violence continue to present a threat to social cohesion and an impediment to attaining a better life for women and children. In addition to the crime prevention programmes, we also have an obligation and economic, is experienced not only by the victims themselves, but by their families and communities”. “In the spirit of Ubuntu, we were at Meadowlands to comfort pensioner Dorah Radebe (84) who was victimized by her 50-year-old son who wanted to take over her property. A hero and a legend of the people of Soweto Mandla “Deejay” Hlatshwayo showed us that not all men are trash when he gave his own life to save a woman companion. We also offered a shoulder to cry on for his family and the
families of Karabo Mokoena, Popi Qwabe, Bongeka Phungula, Lerato Moloi and Thembisile Yende. We endevour to support all families of survivors of violence to show we care”.
