Train up in flames in Germiston!
On Tuesday morning, October 16, the Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters from Germiston and Boksburg central fire stations, collectively battled the blaze of a burning passenger train in Germiston train station. No casualties were recorded on the scene. When the Ekurhuleni emergency personnel arrived, two train carriages (one being the central engine cart of the train) was found burning wildly. Active fire-fighting was initiated after the power supply was cut off for safety reasons. Water supply was connected from the hydrant within the station in one of the platforms. The source of the fire is undetermined and still under investigations by Prasa (Pedestrian Rail Association SA) officials.
A big congratulations to the local police hero, Captain Tshiwulawi Tshilate, for his great achievement at this year’s SA Police Ekurhuleni East Cluster Prestige Awards. Despite being in the hospital getting treatment for injuries he got in a car accident, Captain Tshilate is very happy and grateful for these awards. Captain Tshilate bagged four awards which are: Best Employee Member with a Disability, Social Crime Prevention Member of the Year (2nd), Communication Member of the Year (2nd) and the Certificate of Appreciation from the Ekurhuleni East Cluster Commander, Major-General Mbele.

On Wednesday morning, October 17, an Ekurhuleni Metro Policew (EMPD) K9 Unit member on routine patrol along Modderbee Road in Etwatwa noticed a vehicle that looked abandoned and decided to investigate. When investigating, the police found that the abandoned white Toyota Quantum was confirmed to have been hijacked in Mamelodi, City of Tshwane. The Quantum was found locked with the passenger side door window broken. The SAPS was summoned to lift fingerprints and the vehicle was towed to SAPS Van Ryn Deep in Benoni for further investigations.

A long case of a foreign national without valid documentation dealing in the drug khat, who was arrested in October 2017 has finally been convicted. His sentencing was delivered on Tuesday, October 16, receiving 10 years in prison for his offences. The suspect was found and arrested with the drug Khat valued at R374350 in Benoni by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) Drug Enforcement Unit members last year. “Emmanuel Confidence Mba, a Nigerian national in his mid-thirties, pleaded guilty and was handed a sentence of 9 years for drug dealing of which two were suspended and 12 months for being in the country without valid documentation. The court ordered that the
12 months run concurrent with the 7 year sentence, so the accused received a sentence of 7 years effectively. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and the seized drugs were forfeited to the state,” explained EMPD Spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago. According to Kgasago, the prosecution commended the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit for the systematic and precise manner in which they collated the evidence, utilizing cellphones and video recordings over and above the conventional methods. The evidence was so overwhelming that the accused had no choice but to plead guilty in order to avoid a minimum sentence of 15 years.
Government committed to land reform! KWAMKHWANAZI COMMUNITY FIRST BENEFICIARIES! The South African government is intensifying the implementation of land reform and restitution programmes so that South Africans can leverage land for the betterment of their lives and the growth of the economy. This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa who led a land restitution ceremony on Sunday (October 14). He handed over 4 586 hectares of land to the community of KwaMkhwanazi in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal. “This government is resolute in our commitment to returning the land in an orderly and lawful manner. We shall not allow illegal land occupations,” President Ramaphosa said. He said more than 20 land claimants will have their land returned to them as part of government’s land reform programme. “It is our firm belief that communities must take great interest in their land restitution processes and be active participants in all enterprises and activities taking place on their land. “The concept that will be developed through piloting the Mkhwanazi land claim settlement will be rolled out to other land claims across a number of sectors and industries. This is the first of a number of land claims that we aim to unlock over the next few months,” President Ramaphosa said. The KwaMkhwanazi community will also receive post-settlement packages and support that will assist them in leveraging the potential wealth of the land. “Government will assist you with postsettlement packages that will develop your ability to create sustainable income and jobs from the land transferred to the Mkhwanazi community. This will deliver ongoing benefits to all of the people living on Mkhwanazi land,” the President said. He said the post settlement support packages are designed to ensure beneficiary communities, such as KwaMkhwanazi, build on their existing presence and participation in the sector. It shifts communities from subsistence to commercial participants and owners of businesses across the value chains of the assets on their land. The KwaMkhwanazi community was forcibly removed from their land in three phases following the enactment of the 1913 Land Act. From 1915 to 1918 the first group of dispossession took place as a result of returning World War
I white soldiers. The second phase of dispossession took place in the 1940s, when the white farming community expanded their commercial interests in timber and cane. At the height of apartheid supremacy the government of the time, between 1958 and 1960, violently removed landowners to cater for the expansion of the white community around Richards Bay and the Mthunzini coast. “This community can be exemplary to other recipients of land through its active participation in the administration of funds received through the Phalane Trust. “The Mkhwanazi land recipients, through the Phalane Trust, currently own sugarcane enterprises and the Forestry Inn Hotel Pty Ltd that operate on behalf of the community and we encourage this type of entrepreneurship. We admire the financial savvy shown by claimants in 2011 who developed two disbursement models for funds received from rental income,” President Ramaphosa said. The President said access to land in all its uses – from agriculture to urban and industrial development – is at the heart of access to a better life for all South Africans and better opportunities and returns investment and trade partners

Grant beneficiaries warned not to share new card PINs! The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned old age and disability grant beneficiaries to appoint trustworthy procurators to withdraw their social grants on their behalf at ATMs, post offices or at merchants. This will prevent the withdrawal of their grants without their knowledge and approval. The Mpumalanga SASSA said it has discovered that old age and disability grant beneficiaries are making the mistake of disclosing their PIN codes to relatives to assist in collecting their social grants. “Revealing a PIN code to an untrustworthy person could allow that person to withdraw the social grant payment and cause undue hardship,” the agency said in a statement on Thursday (October 18). Beneficiaries are advised to protect and safeguard their PIN codes by not writing their PIN on the card, not giving their PIN number to anyone over the phone and when making a purchase they should not let a store clerk enter their PIN number. The agency said beneficiaries should also not ask for assistance from strangers at ATMs when withdrawing money. SASSA encouraged beneficiaries to report any of these acts at the nearest police station. This will help protect them from criminal activities.

Dipaleseng Youth Drug Health Clinic open day Prevention Programme held in Siyathemba! launched!
On Wednesday, October 3, Sasol in partnership with Dipaleseng Local Municipality officially launched the Youth Drug Prevention Programme and also handed over an office to be utilised for consultation sessions in the area. This programme was firstly introduced by the Mkhondo Alathia Rehabilitation Centre (MARC). Sasol partnered with MARC in support of the initiative and has implemented this programme since February 2017 in Govan Mbeki Municipality, starting at eMbalenhle township. It started with 3 schools and 400 learners. Due to the need demand for the programme, currently 17 schools with 1400 learners are being serviced weekly. The programme has been extended to Dipaleseng Local Municipality where 400 learners from 6 schools are benefiting from this initiative. The intent of the programme’s imple-

mentation is to create awareness of the danger of substance and alcohol abuse before the trialling stage. The community of Siyathemba in Balfour were invited to the Open Day for the Balfour Clinic, where residents were given awareness of the many services provided by the primary healthcare centre. Leaders from the Mpumalanga Health Department, Dipaleseng Local Municipality and other local stakeholders spoke about the Speaking to Ms Phindile Rkgoadi, she said the open day is a chance to explain people that the facility provides 24 hours services. “We operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m, we also do deliveries assist those
who have a mental health issues,” said Rkgoadi. The Balfour Clinic also provides mens health and mobile clinics for people living far from the centre. “We have a services dedicated to young people, where we attend our youth and teach them about healthy lifestyles,” On behalf of Dipaleseng Municipality executive mayor, the ward councillor Sphiwe Ntlapho, was there to support the event and he said words of motivation saying young people must attend these events, because they are important to them.

Mayor vows to rename local road after Margaret Gazo! FRONT PAGE STORY CONTINUES and danced to show love and support to the late veteran. The commemorations continued at the Kwa-Thema Hall, where there was a spectacular setting for the elderly and veterans from the community were invited to the annual Margaret Gazo Memorial Lecture. Back in August 1956, Gazo led the march from Payneville and as they approached town, soldiers and police started shooting at the women. Fearing for their lives, some of the protesters decided to abandon the march, but Gazo and a small group continued to the Union Buildings to
be counted among the multitudes who gathered there that day. She spent five years in prison for political activism for leading a local anti-pass demonstration and helping to organise the bigger national march. In 2011, the South African Government conferred The Order of Luthuli in Bronze to Gazo for leading the Women’s March to the Union Buildings and for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the ideals of democracy and her contribution to human rights and the struggle against Apartheid.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mzwandile Masina, vowed to rename Ergo Road to Margaret Gazo Road in memory of the late struggle icon. Mayor Masina made the pronouncement as he delivered the keynote address at the Inaugural Margaret Gazo Lecture at the Kwa-Thema Community Hall in Ekurhuleni on Thursday, October 18. Mayor Masina, said: “The legacy by women like Margaret Gazo is not dormant, it is full of lessons and inspiration to carry future generations for centuries to come, we know this because Mama Gazo has multiplied.” Officials from the City and members of the African National Congress Womens League in the area, joined the Gazo family for a wreath laying ceremony at
the tombstone of the late struggle heroine. Thereafter, the guests travelled to the Kwa-Thema Community Hall for the Memorial Lecture in her honour. The Margaret Gazo Lecture forms part of a series of events which the City is hosting in honour of Oliver Tambo Month. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the birth of Margaret Gazo. Mama Gazo participated in organising and leading the 1956 Woman’s March to the Union Buildings to oppose pass laws and the apartheid system. Mama Margaret Gazo, who was born in 1 January 2018 in Springs, east of Ekurhuleni, and was among the leaders and organisers of the famous 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings against the extension of Pass Laws to the African Women.
Ekurhuleni EPWP Programme for young artisans coming soon! The City of Ekurhuleni mayor,Mzwandile Masina, has recently announced a new Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP, looking to take in about 300 young and unemployed residents. The three-year apprenticeship is intended to create sustainable artisan jobs and phase out dependency on external contractors who undertake the installation, repairs and maintenance of water meters in the City. Through a partnership with Technical and Vocational Education and Training Colleges (TVET) and the Ekurhuleni, beneficiaries will exit the programme as qualified artisans; having obtained a trade test certificate and a vocational qualification at the same time. The programme has two components, mainly; a six months theoretical/practical plumbing apprenticeship training at an accredited TVET college integrated with twenty-four months experiential training within
the City of Ekurhuleni Department of Water and Sanitation. The City of Ekurhuleni has identified water governance as an immediate remedy to improve water use efficiency, and reduce non-revenue water in the municipality. Non-Revenue Water in the City of Ekurhuleni is currently standing at 34,7% and the long-term target is to reduce this figure to 20% by 2023 in line with the City’s water demand management strategy. Mayor Masina, said: “We are continuously investigating ways on how we can exploit the potential of the demographic dividend in our City. This initiative is a targeted programme aimed at rebuilding the plumbing skills base for water stewards whilst creating work opportunities for the youth. Such an effort is required in order for the City to decisively deal with metering and the resultant lost revenue for the Municipality.”

Winners of the Karan Beef Sports Against Crime tournament! On Friday, October 12, the first annual Karan Beef Sports Against Crime tournament concluded at the Ratanda Stadium and Multipurpose Sports Complex. The three day competition combined soccer, netball, debate and volleyball competitions together in a single event where local schools participated to see who can win the trophies and medals. The finale was a fun-filled Friday that saw a battle between Ratanda’s best schools go head-to-head for the bragging rights of who’s best. Despite the drastic change in the weather, the tournament was well done by the
local sports organizers. The competition was sponsored by local beef giant, Karan Beef along with the Sedibeng District Municipality, Lesedi Local Municipality and 016 Sports Leisure. This year’s tournament was the first of many to come, supporting school sports and uplifting young talent. • Football: Boneha Primary School, Ratanda Secondary School. • Netball: Sithokomele Primary School, Khanya Lesedi High School • Volleyball: Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School
Local Karate Club represent in Police tournament!
The South African Police Services (SAPS) recently hosted the annual Full Contact Karate tournament for Kick-Boxing, Judo and Karate in the Western Cape. The African full contact karate organization (AFCKO) was part of this historical event.“The organization supported this tournament because we believe the man and the woman in blue uniform are part of the community they need our support in everything they do,” said Thulani Sibisi on behalf of AFCKO. The Ekurhuleni based martial arts club selected 11 students to represent the team in the Cape.
