Porsche driver late for golf caught doing 218Km/h on N3 road! In a high speed chase on Sunday morning, November 4 , the EMPD High Speed Unit arrested a 35 year old driver behind a wheel of a white Porsche Boxster, when he clocked 218km/h on N3 freeway between Geldenhuys interchange and the Rand Airport oﬀ-ramp. The arrested driver claimed that he was late for a golf game. In another seperate incident on Sungay monrning, on the same stretch of the freeway, three other drivers were also arrested for excessive speeding. “A 25 year old man in a silver Toyota sedan with three passengers registered the

speed of 177km/h on this 120km/h zone advancing the reason that he was late for a study group session in Vereeniging. The remaining two male speedsters aged 42 and 23 in a blue Alfa Romeo and a silver Mini Cooper were caught doing 175 and 168km/h respectively both claiming that they were late for work,” said the EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago. All four arrested speedsters were detained at Germiston police station on charges of reckless and negligent driving but later released after each posted bail of R1,000.

Nine arrested for theft of car parts From police pound!

Security company officers, were led to five more suspects who were apprehended in Tsakane, Katlehong and Wattville. “These suspects were found with the stolen vehicle parts which included engines, manifolds, gearboxes, car seats and starters. The rounding up of all the nine suspects took place between 5pm on 30 October and 2am on 31 October,” explained the police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago. All the arrested suspects, aged between 25 and 40 , were detained at Boksburg North police station on charges of theft, possession of stolen motor vehicle parts and resisting arrest. They were expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on theft charges.

This is after the storms destroyed their houses and belongings. One property, located in the extension 6 area was completely eliminated. Residents reported that some houses has minor damages, making the structures unfit to face nature’s fury of wind. Families are now finding ways of relief after the devastating weather. Officials from the Lesedi Municipality visited the affected households and promised assistance in rebuilding and repairs.

Minister Cele salutes SAPS for curbing heists! Police Minister Bheki Cele has commended the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) for stabilising the wave of cash-in-transit heists that swept the country earlier this year. Between June and 4 November, the National Stabilisation Intervention saw the arrest of 237 cash-in-transit suspects for a series of crimes. Cele said while significant inroads in breaking the backs of the syndicates involved in CIT robberies, the fight with these criminals was far from over. “I am before you much more confident about the work police are doing on CITs than I was on 4 June this year, given that since then, over 230 cash-intransit robbers are off our streets,” he said on Tuesday, November 6. The police successes came after Na-

tional Stabilisation Intervention teams were directed to address CIT heists in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. This was after a sudden upsurge in CIT robberies during April and May this year. During the heists, armoured vehicles were being attacked by robbers with heavy calibre weapons and explosives. “Through these intervention processes, high profile targets were arrested in these priority provinces and continued SAPS presence in these provinces led to the displacement of crime towards predominantly rural parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and the Western Cape,” said Cele. Between 1 April 2018 and 4 November 2018, 118 CITs were recorded across the country. This was a 36% re-

duction from the 184 cases recorded in the same period in 2017. In this year’s reporting period, 92 vehicles, 78 firearms and 1 402 rounds of ammunition were recovered. An unconfirmed substantial amount of money was recovered. “We can attribute a great deal of these successes to the mobilisation of the 72hour Activation Plan. This plan entails the maximum mobilisation of resources, including crime intelligence, forensic experts, the Hawks, seasoned detectives and tactical teams for a 72-hour period to ensure that critical information, intelligence and evidence that ensure a breakthrough in investigations is not lost,” he said. Through crime intelligence multi-disciplinary driven operations, over the

past six weeks, Cele said police had arrested suspects while plotting to commit cash-in-transit robberies. The 30 suspects were arrested in Midrand (12) and Katlehong (seven) in Gauteng, as well as in Riveria Park in Mahikeng (nine) and Brits in the North West. A SAPS officer was among the arrested in Brits. During the officer’s arrest, police also recovered a BMW and a Mercedes Benz. In the BMW, which allegedly belongs to the sergeant, police recovered several sets of police uniform, reflector jackets and one handgun with the serial number erased. “Crime Intelligence continues to combat CIT robberies, stopping robbers in their tracks by arresting robbers before committing these heinous crimes,” Cele said.

Ratanda community unite in battle against Cancer! On Saturday, October 27 the community of Ratanda in Heidelberg joined the annual local cancer awareness campaign, Flowering Hope at the Ratanda Multipurpose Hall. The event was made to celebrate the strength of people living with the disease, plus informing locals about various cancers. Themed, ‘Let the flower in me bring hope’, the Flowering Hope cancer awareness event was well received by people young and old. Sponsors like Volkswagen NTT Heidelberg and Heidelberg Mall were spotted at the event, with the mall mascot entertaining the children. Lesedi’s only finalist at the 2018 Face of Mzansi pageant, Nthabiseng Rebekuh Moemisi, motivated the guests. The local cancer survivors were gifted with hampers and beauty spa vouchers to treat themselves. Local musicians also entertained guests at the third annual event.

Drone a game-changer in the construction sector! Drone technology can turn around the fortunes of the construction sector, Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo said on Monday, November 5. Updating the media on progress made since the launch of the programme on 21 May, Mamabolo said drone technology can address challenges such as cost and quality issues. Since the first launch in May, the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) has acquired an additional four drones bringing its fleet to five. “We have one drone per region because since the launch we have taken position, that drones can make infrastructure delivery efficient and effective,” said Mamabolo. The drone programme is a partnership between the DID and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) which resulted in the department signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the university in July to accelerate the delivery of public infrastructure through smart technologies. Speaking to journalists

on infrastructure delivery analytics capability that uses drone data to monitor progress against plans, monitor the use of materials on site and project governance and safety controls. Capabilities of the drones include 3D technology where through the drone, the DID can monitor and verify site activity without officials being on site through high quality transmission technology that allows high definition video streaming. “Capabilities include a 3D model. We will be making it official policy where everybody that works with DID, our professionals, they will have to join us in leveraging smart technologies. The 3D technologies embedded in the drone gives us the opportunity to check and verify site activity,” he said. Through the technology, the department is able to check whether construction on site is in accordance with architectural designs. Through the drone technology the department can also ensure that “every

In addition to being able to accurately measure supplies such as sand on site, the technology makes it not only possible to track material supplier for maintenance purposes, but also makes it possible for the department to keep tabs of which sectors of the economy are benefiting from the inputs into the built projects. 2019 Elections likely to be in May! - IEC

The Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson, Glen Mashinini, says the 2019 general elections will most likely be held in May. Mashinini said President Cyril Ramaphosa recently indicated his intention to proclaim elections before the end of May next year but is expected to announce the exact date in due course. In terms of the Constitution, the term of the current National Assembly and provincial legislatures ends on 6 May 2019 and elections must be held within 90 days thereafter. Addressing the media in Centurion recently, Mashinini said a voter registration weekend will be held on Saturday, 26 and Sunday, 27 January 2019. The Electoral Commission will support the voter registration drive with the rollout of a national communication and education campaign to encourage participation. Mashinini said all the country’s 22 932 voting stations will open from 08h00 to 17h00 on the voter registration weekend. “This is to allow new voters to register and existing voters to update and check their registration details.” Mashinini said there are currently 26.1 million registered voters on the nation-

al common voters’ roll. The IEC chair hoped that at least one million new voters would be added to the voters’ roll ahead of the 2019 elections. Mashinini said the voter registration will also be conducted in January in correctional centres around the country to allow prisoners to exercise their right to vote. “For voting purposes, prisoners are regarded as being registered to vote in the voting district in which their prison is located. Voter registration Campaigns The IEC is hopeful that voters, who are already registered, will use the opportunity to visit their voting station to check their registration and specifically to confirm and update their address details. “All South Africa citizens aged 16 and older in possession of an official ID document can register as voters (although only those who are at least 18 years old

on voting day may vote). “Voters should take a copy of their barcoded ID book, smart card ID or temporary ID certificate when they go to register in the voting district in which they ordinarily reside. “When registering, voters will need to provide their address or a description of where they live to allow the Electoral Commission to place them on the correct segment of the voters’ roll. Proof of address is not required,” Mashinini said. According to Mashinini, a registration weekend is also being planned for voters living abroad at South Africa’s 120 High Commissions, embassies and consulates. “The Electoral Commission will announce dates once final arrangements have been concluded with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation,” Mashinini said. The IEC contact centre will also be activated ahead of the national registration weekend and will be operational until after the registration weekend to assist citizens to register and vote. Mashinini appealed to all stakeholders, including political parties, government departments and entities, media and civil society organisations -- including labour, business, NGOs, religious-based

organisations, traditional leaders and all community organisations -- to support the registration drive and encourage voter registration ahead of elections. The overseas registration weekend is likely to take place just before or after the South Africa weekend.

2016 Municipal Elections Atlas The Electoral Commission also announced the release of the Atlas of Results for the 2016 Municipal Elections. The Atlas is a compilation of voting data from the elections presented geographically by province, municipality, ward and voting district and can be used by political parties to analyse their and other parties’ electoral performance in the 2016 elections. Ekurhuleni’s Thando Vote for Vusi! closer to win Idols SA! V Thando Mngomezulu (19) hailing from Alberton in the City of Ekurhuleni has made it to the top three contestants set to win this year’s TV singing show, Idols South Africa. Despite being extremely shy at first, Thando has gradually peeled away the layers giving strong performances right through. The judges urged that she work on her shy and dull personality as it might work against her in the competition. Thando believes that this method is helping her a lot when it comes to her performances. “I believe personally that I have been working on my confidence, I am way better than before and I’m still gonna work on it.” The Idols Season 14 finalist has proved that dynamite does come in small packages. Her young age and small physique could not contain the strong voice that has blessed South Africans to vote for her to make it this far.

Recently on the TV show, Mngomezulu gave her inspiration, singer Justin Bieber a tribute fit for a king with an exhilarating performance of 'Never Say Never', coupled with some dance moves too. The last contestants jetted off to Dubai following Sunday's show, a reward for reaching the Top 3. Soon, one more contestant bites the dust and makes way to the Top 2, who will battle it out in in the finale. The two other contestants selected to battle it out against Thando in the Idols competition are Delft-based songbird Yanga Sobetwa, 16, who is supported by the entire Western Cape and Thato Makape the oldest contestant for season 14. Makape travelled 1 250km from Postmasburg in the Northern Cape to Cape Town for the auditions in February. It is reported that Makape had to work as an occasional barber and do singing gigs, just to save for the long trip.

He is currently nominated at the annual ‘Live Your Dream SA’ awards that is hosted by EThekwini Municipality in Durban. Mabena is in line to win the Best Poet award, but that can be possible only when people vote for him. The 26 year old is a very ambitious and humble character, having a busy schedule doing many things to advance his career while making a living. Vusi is currently residing in Johannesburg, looking to make his dreams come true and motivate young people from his community. “I’m currently busy with lot of projects. I’m in the studio recording my first 18 tracks and poems album that I’m going to feature various artists. I’m also busy with my first book, that will be out next year,”explains Vusi. On top of all that, Vusi still finds time to write motivational columns for Mapepeza Newspaper every week. He is also currently taking extra acting roles and has been featured as supporting cast member in popular TV shows like Generations: The Legacy, Skeem-Saam,Isibaya, Isithembiso, 7 de-Laan, Isidingo, Rhythm City, The Queen and many others. “On the new soapie by the Ferguson Production called, The Throne, I’m one of the thugs and on The River soapie I’m featured as bodyguard of Lindiwe plus a role of a detective on 7 de-Laan,” he said. Vusi also participates in talk shows on TV and motivates KasieFM listeners every Monday afternoon with his poems. “I’ve learnt that if you want to make

it in life, associate yourself with others and use every opportunity that comes your way. Don’t be afraid of going out there and shine, no matter what people are thinking about you,” said Mabena. Vusi said his motivation comes from having a role model in his life. “My role models are Dr Rebecca Malope and Dr Nelson Mandela,” he said. In his spare time, Vusi volunteers himself by going to schools to do motivational talks. “I like to motivate my peers not to give up in life, so far I’ve managed to go to 135 schools around four province’s namely, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Kwa-Zulu Natal,” said Mabena. Ellis announces final Women’s Afcon squad!

Banyana Banyana’s head coach, Desiree Ellis, has announced a squad of 21 players to represent South Africa at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations tournament scheduled for Ghana from 17 November to 1 December. The premier African Women’s football showpiece will be used as a 2019 FIFA Women World Cup qualifier – the top three nations in Ghana will represent the continent at the World Cup in France in June. Ellis has selected the bulk of the squad that has been with Banyana Banyana for a long period of time. The squad also shows a lot of experience with most of the players having taken part in the Women’s AFCON tournament before. The Banyana coach has also called up two uncapped players – Amanda Mthandi (University of Johannesburg) and Tiisetso Makhubela (Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies). “It was a difficult task to pin down the final 21 players as they all raised their hands to show how much they want to be part of this magnificent team. But I am confident that the players we have chosen will do the business for South Africa. Too many times we have

close to winning the tournament and I think with the preparations we have had, we feel ready for the competition,” said Ellis. The former Banyana Banyana captain has also selected four players to be on stand-by – Kholosa Biyana, Rachel Sebati, Thato Letsoso and Hilda Magaia. The quartet will travel with the squad to Ghana and return to South Africa after the international friendly match that will be played in Accra on Sunday, 11 November. Banyana Banyana have been drawn in Group B against defending champions Nigeria, Kenya and Zambia. South Africa will open her account with a clash against the Super Falcons on 18 November, followed by an encounter against Kenya three days later (21 November). Both matches will be played at Cape Coast. For the final match, Ellis and her charges will travel to the capital Accra to face Zambia on 24 November. South Africa will be making their 12th appearance at the tournament. The squad has been in camp since Sunday, 21 October, and will travel to Ghana on Friday, 9 November.

Bafana Bafana’s head coach, Stuart Baxte,r has announced the squad to face Nigeria in a crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday, November 17 at FNB Stadium in Soweto. The match kicks off at 3 P.M. Baxter has had to re-arrange his squad due to injuries to several of his key players – the latest being England-based Kamohelo Mokotjo. Other key players set to miss this fixture are Dean Furman, Bongani Zungu, Keagan Dolly, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Bradley Grobler, all out with long term injuries. “It has really been a tough task to select the team to face Nigeria without some of our regular players, but we have to soldier on. These injuries could not have come at the worst of times when we really need to collect all three points because we are well aware the importance of doing this,” said Baxter. “The positive side, however, is that this gives us a chance to introduce other players into the squad, and these are players we have been monitoring, so it not like a knee-jerk reaction. This helps us to ensure that when we qualify for the tournament we have an even bigger

pool of players to choose from. I am also confident that the players brought in will do a good job.” Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles clash at a time when the two have swapped positions at the top. Nigeria lead Group E with nine points, just one ahead of South Africa – who are yet to concede or lose a match in the qualifiers. “I must admit this makes the upcoming clash all the more interesting. Remember we beat them 2-0 in the first leg in their backyard, so they will come here trying to avenge that, on the other hand we want to regain the top spot which we relinquished with the draw away to Seychelles. The good thing is that qualification is still in our hands,” added Baxter. Bafana Bafana are expected to assemble for camp on Sunday, 11 November 2018 in Johannesburg. The Total Africa Cup of Nations tournament will be played from 7 – 30 June 2019. Cameroon are the defending champions and will host this Edition. The next AFCON qualifier for Bafana Bafana will be away to Libya in March 2019.
