EDITOR’S NOTE
W
e have to admit this painful fact: every month in South Africa, we are losing some of the most significant human beings that lived. From renowned artists to servants of the people, all gone too soon. Now let me account for what we have covered over since we started to elaborate my views: - January: gospel giant lundi Tyamara (38), passed away at edenvale Hospital where he was being treated for Tb of the stomach and a liver condition. Same month, Jazz legend Thandi Klassen (86) also lost her life. Then one of the most insightful intellectuals in the country, Professor Herbert Vilakazi joins the dearly departed. - February: rugby legend and former Springbok captain, Joost van der Westhuizen passed away on February 6. later in the month, Ms Miriam Tlali, Mzansi’s first black female author to publish a novel, also passed away. - March: entertainment legend Joe Mafela died in a car accident. Founder of the bloemfontein Celtic FC, dr Petrus rantlai Molemela passed away on March 26. Then struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada loses his life after an 87 year long journey. - April: deputy Mayor of richmond Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, Thandazile Phoswa was tragically murdered on April 2. On President Zuma’s birthday, April 12, Ontlametse Phalatse, one of the two South African young women living with Progeria loses her life at only 18 years old. Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) stalwart, freedom fighter and former Tshwane Metro councillor, Philip Ata Kgosana died on April 20. Mr Kgosana led more than 30 000 anti-Pass laws protestors from langa, Cape Town in a march to the apartheid parliament in the 1960s. boxing trainer of SA’s most prolific fighters, Nick durandt and former Kaizer Chief Coach Jeff butler join the list of the recently passed. i hope we do not have this trend of dying legends next month (and throughout the year), but i also have to be realistic. Time passes and people pass with it. The moments we take in our lives to share, to serve and to love other people are the only times we really have on earth – make most of it. Mapepeza Newspaper is grateful to all our readers, past and current, that have made it possible for us to get this far. We hope to make such an impact that we are counted amongst the legendary when we have ceased to exist. -Stephen Seakgwe, eDITOR

Local I.T Firm extends digital helping hand to the needy!
M2TD recently extended a digital helping hand to two deserving recipients by providing them each with a much-needed laptop and printer. The company, which is 100% black-owned, is committed to helping people and organisations in need to access the benefits of the digital age.
The first recipient hails from Palmridge Extension 2 in Ekurhuleni. Sphiwe Lovemore Mvulane matriculated from Thutopele High School last year with distinctions in maths, physical science, life science and geography, and was accepted to study medicine at the University of Pretoria. One of the basic requirements for his course, however, was a computer and he just couldn’t afford one. He approached M2TD for assistance and the company agreed to make the donation in order to empower him with the tools he needs to be successful in his studies. Many students from disadvantaged com-
munities do not have access to a personal computer and Sphiwe’s new laptop will give him the head start he deserves.
The second recipient is an NGO that provides skills and development training for schools in the Maboloka Community in North West province. Like Sphiwe, Moving for Hope approached M2TD with a request for a donation late last year. The new equipment the Moving for Hope has received from M2TD will be used to streamline its administrative processes and improve efficiencies. “Access to computers is a fundamental need for both individuals and organisations in today’s wired world,” says David Matshane, M2TD’s CEO. “We are privileged to have been able to help these recipients in some small way and we wish them every success in the future.”

PreSideNT Jacob Zuma is grieving the passing on of Miss Ontlametse Phalatse, one of the two South African young women living with Progeria, an extremely rare genetic disorder in which symptoms resembling aspects of aging are manifested at a very early age. He recently attended her funeral in the North West. Miss Phalatse paid a courtesy call on the President on the eve of her 18th birthday last month. “A brave young fighter has fallen. May her spirit inspire all others living with disabilities or facing any difficulty, to soldier on as she did and live life to the full. We are really proud of her. We wish to convey our utmost condolences to her mother, her whole family and the Ontlametse Phalatse Trust for this sad loss. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” said President Zuma. The President remains committed to fulfilling his undertaking to help the family with a house according to Ontlametse’s wishes.

gRIQUA R5 NOT A FAKE!
The South African reserve bank (SArb) says commemorative circulation coins, such as the r5 griqua Town coin, are ‘normal’ circulation coins that form part of all the other coins already in circulation. The bank said it has recently received numerous enquiries on the value of the r5 commemorative circulation coins. “The SArb would like to reiterate that commemorative circulation coins, such as the r5 griqua Town coin, are normal circulation coins that form part of all the other coins already in circulation. “These circulation coins, whether normal or commemorative, are all worth their face value, which is r5 in the case of the r5 griqua Town circulation coin,” said the central bank on Monday. The SArb urged the public that if they get one of these coins as change, not to hold on to the coin and rather make a purchase so that “the next person can also experience the beauty of the coin”. “The SArb issues commemorative circulation coins as part of its currency production function. These coins are issued to commemorate a person or an event that has had a significant impact on society. Such coins are always produced in large quantities and are made available and accessible to the public at face value.” For example, the commemorative r5 Nelson Mandela circulation coin that was issued in 2008 to celebrate the former President’s 90th birthday was and is still worth r5. “There could be a buyer willing to pay a higher price to collect such a commemorative circulation coin but the SArb does not attach a value higher than the face value to such coins,” the bank said.

HANI HONOURED! On Monday, April 10 the City held an honorary wreath-laying ceremony at the Thomas Nkobi Cemetery (Boksburg). The morning programme, as expected, bought together the country's political leaders to pay tribute to the fallen struggle hero, amongst them is the President Jacob Zuma.
President Jacob Zuma (alongside Dimpho Hani) laying a wreath on the tombstone of Chris Hani, honouring and celebrating the life and legacy of one of the country's most respected struggle stalwarts and MK Commander Thembisile ‘Chris’ Hani at Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Elspark, Boksburg

Martin Thembisile Hani, aka Chris Hani was fatally gunned down at his home on this day, 24 years ago. Since then, the city of Ekurhuleni has conferred the 'Freedom of the City' to the late Hani in November 2006, thereby declaring April as Chris Hani Month. Leaders from national government, SACP, SANCO, COSATU and the MKVA laid wreaths on the grave of Hani. The City mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina and council chief whip Jongizizwe Dhlabathi joined the leaders in delivering messages of support to the family of Chris Hani. Dali Tambo also attended to A plague was unveiled at the Chris Hani memorial site, the President and Arts & Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa. "SAHRA has declared the Chris Hani gravesite and memorial monument as a National Heritage site on March 24," said Minister Mthethwa. Gauteng Provincial Government was represented by acting mayor, Finance MEC Creecy. Widow of Chris Hani, Dimpho made her remarks on the day. She thanked the Government for honoring her late husband's legacy by declararing the House and Gravesite of Hani as National Heritage Sites. Dimpho Hani quoted the words of Malcolm X when he once said that 'the media is is the most powerful tool in the Word. It has the power to make the innocent look guilty and
the guilty look innocent.' She told guests of the current trends of fake news that are seen online and on social media. Dimpho was recently a victim of bias news when she attended a prayer ceremony, which was later reported as being part of an 'anti-Zuma' faction. She urged the people to be aware of such article and pleads people to not be misled. Dimpho Hani personally thanked the President for helping her family through the tough times after Chris' passing, especially when her youngest daughter was having drug addiction problems. Minister Nathi Mthethwa's introduction for the President to speak was well received, as the crowd welcomed 'Number One' with song and cheer. President Zuma delivered his keynote address in the afternoon. Mainly on the President's speech, the fight against racism is important to sustain the democracy in South Africa."We cannot allow, and assist to take racist forward." Zuma speaks on the various discriminatory messages from last Friday's protests against his Presidency. The Hate Speech Bill was mentioned as the solution to the racist remarks made on public platforms, including social media. President Zuma also mentioned the privilege bestowed upon him to declare the Chris Hani grave, the Chris Hani memorial and Walk of Remembrance a national heritage site. A storm broke immediately after the President's address and the songs got even more intense as the rain started pouring. In the evening, the Chris Hani memorial lecture was delivered by new Finance minister Malusi Gigaba.
Qatar and Mzansi strengthen ECONOMIC ties! On April 12, President Zuma hosted the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani. President Zuma’s visit to Qatar last year focused on cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture and agro-processing, defence, the ocean economy, as well as tourism. It also led to the proposed elevation of structured bilateral engagement to Ministerial level and agreements to establish a Joint Technical Committee and pursue the establishment of a joint SA-Qatar Investment Fund in cooperation with Qatar’s Sovereign Wealth Fund. Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has assured Qatari investors that as South Africa drives its radical economic transformation programme, the country is still the right place in which to invest. Meanwhile, total trade between South Africa and Qatar has increased from R4 billion in 2012 to R7 billion in 2016. Qatari exports to South Africa were $345 million in 2016, while South African exports to Qatar were at $105 million. The Minister said, meanwhile, that in line with the commitment to radical economic transformation, government will ensure that there is adequate participation of black entrepreneurs, especially women and youth in the economy. South Africa's largest investments in the Middle East is Sasol’s joint venture gas-to-liquid (GTL) facility located in Qatar. Qatari Minister of Economy and Commerce Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani said there are opportunities that exist to create trade and investment ties between the two countries. Qatar, which has massive oil and gas reserves, has had a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of around 4% in the last two years, despite the low prices of oil and gas. The Emir was on a two-day state visit to South Africa. He was accompanied on Minister of Small Business Development South Africa, Lindiwe Zulu with Minister of his trip to South Africa by a high powered business delegation.
