ery challenges. we must change that hence we have decided that we will be out there most of the time instead of the boardroom, so that we can have a sense of what the issues on the ground are and attend to them timeously.” he further announced that to improve the turnaround time to service delivery complaints, the city would be launching a smartphone app, with gPS navigation so that communities can just take a picture of the problem and send to the call centre for speedy resolution. As part of Siyaqhuba Friday, the mayor leads his mayoral committee, senior managers and technical staff to communities to address service delivery challenges. “we are calling on our people to freely engage us when we We are driving ‘Pro-poor’ visit them so that we have agenda and we have no choice a clear picture of what we are dealing with and how but to hit the ground running.” best we can handle that,” says Mayor Masina.

LOCAL POLICE STORIES

EACh day there are an increasing amount of anecdotal stories doing the rounds about how cannabis cures everything from nausea to cancer. A South African Medical Research Council funded study has now also entered the ring to lend some reliability to a view that has otherwise been largely shrugged off due to the negative stereotypes that are so often associated with the long stigmatised plant. while this study is by no means the last word in the cannabis cures cancer conversation, it does investigate the effects of cannabis sativa vs the effect of the more specific CBD component of cannabis on cervical cancer cells.

A red Vw Polo hijacked with a six year old girl passenger was hijacked at gunpoint by two assailants on Friday during the day in norkem Park. on speeding off with the hijacked vehicle, the six year old girl was flung out of the moving vehicle through a window. The hijacked vehicle was recovered on Monday, September 3 in Midrand where two suspects were arrested and two unlicensed handguns recovered. The vehicle was repeating along Allandale road moving in the direction of Midrand when the law enforcers cornered the two suspects and placed them under arrest. Two 9mm pistols with twentyfour live rounds were recovered. Both pistols were found with serial numbers filed off. The apprehended suspects, aged 34 and 32, were detained at Rabie Ridge police station on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

A 35 year old lesotho national was arrested for Possession of suspected stolen copper cables. observant Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate spotted two guys getting out of the truck at the n3 Freeway off-ramp next to Copa Cabana and at the same time, the two suspicious guys were carrying two green and black bags respectively. They speedily put them inside the white Vw Citi golf that was standing few metres away from the truck. The Police officer, stopped and monitors the movements. Ultimately the white Vw Citi golf passed the Police Motor Vehicle. The Police officer signalled the driver to stop. After stopping the white Vw Citi golf, the driver and occupants were ordered to come out with their luggage. on inspecting what were inside the bags, the Police officer saw copper cables. he immediately told the two guys that they were under arrest. he called for a back-up. whilst tying the second suspect, he fought up and the struggle ensured between Captain Tshilate and suspect. whilst the police officer was trying to place him under arrest, he managed to ran away. one suspect was arrested. he will appear before heidelberg Magistrate Court soon.

Titled Cannabidiol rather than Cannabis sativa extracts inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis in cervical cancer cells, the study concludes that “these data suggest that cannabidiol rather than Cannabis sativa crude extracts prevent cell growth and induce cell death in cervical cancer cell lines” and “The aim of this study was to evaluate for the antigrowth effects of Cannabis sativa extracts and to also determine the mode of cell death following treatment. The activity of Cannabis sativa extracts was compared to that of cannabidiol, in order to verify whether the reported results were due to the presence of the compound. The study showed that the activity of one of the extracts might have been due to the presence of cannabidiol. it further demonstrated the ability of Cannabis sativa to induce apoptosis with or without cell cycle arrest and via mitochondrial pathway. More research needs to be done elucidating the mechanism between the active ingredients and molecular

targets involved in the regulation of the cell cycle.” CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the primary compounds found in cannabis plant. But unlike ThC, the other primary ingredient in cannabis (which most people have heard of), CBD does not get you high. And while many healthcare professionals and legislators can’t look past the psychoactive side effects ThC, CBD is quickly changing the debate around medical marijuana, even in South Africa. Something that will undoubtedly become more prolific though is the availability of hemp extracted CBD only products that are currently taking the nation by storm as a result of the growing demand by consumers for non and low ThC products. That these products may possibly be a poor fit for their ailments due to the complete lack of any ThC or the accompanying Entourage Effect of cannabis’ many other companion components is something that is in large part being disregarded by people who are desperate for any solution. The guilt free nature of purchasing a CBD only product instead of an otherwise illegal cannabis oil extract appears to also be a significant factor for people who would prefer to avoid a drug dealer type experience or possible visit from the cops. while this study is by no means the definitive answer to the cannabis and cancer debate, the fact that it’s a local study with promising results should force legislators, politicians and healthcare professionals alike to take notice and is therefore a big step forward in South African medical marijuana discourse. believe that lawyers and businesspeople rule the world; that it is business/entrepreneurs who take responsibility to innovate and empower people all over the World. Mapepeza Business Section we have created a platform to help entrepreneurs do just that. The purpose is to engage entrepreneurs, to celebrate them plus give useful information for aspiring businesspeople and the general audience. I had a chat with the editor of Mapepeza, Stephen Seakgwe and this is what he had to say: “I think any unemployed South African under the age of 35 should quit the life of trying to get a job. That life is the default steps cast by standards of society. Creating one and employing others to do the same is the future employment we’re creating as entrepreneurs.” Later he went on to ask whether we choose to live life by design, or by default. What Stephen said to me just crystallizes the whole purpose of this Section, but it is edited by me of course. Yes, we an abundance of educated and young people in Africa with the potential to start something new; open new enterprises, professional practices and sciences. C.Vs (Curriculum Vitae) to places and job offers they didn’t study for. Once again, Stephen’s words came to me. He said: If you study and get the job, living by the default; you got everything on the wall but nothing on the ball.” What he meant was when young people live for the ‘default’ standard (getting qualifications, job promotions etc.) instead of by ‘designing their ideal lives and living to their own standards,’ they (we) grow with no courage to be the Elon Musks of tomorrow. I’m rolling with the people who want to build and own things, not people who want to be domestic or normal. Economic Development MEC Lebohang Maile signs the MOU with JCCI President Ernest Mahlaule during the Chamber’s Annual Conference.

The Gauteng Provincial Government is building an economic coalition with private companies for an inclusive and sustainable economy to tackle youth unemployment, poverty and inequality in the province.

The conference, hosted with the aim of providing feedback on what the stakeholders have achieved in Gauteng to date was attended by industry leaders in key sectors that have been identified to drive the growth of the Gauteng economy.

Youth unemployment was top of the agenda at the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (JCCI) annual conference held on Friday (September 23) at the Industrial Development Corporation offices in Sandton. Addressing panelists at the conference, Premier David Makhura said the provincial government was prioritising the issue of youth unemployment as an emergency. He called on all leaders of government, civil society and the business to convene to find a lasting solution.

The JCCI is an independent, nonpolitical, subscription-based association dedicated to promoting a business-friendly environment. It is a key player in the promotion and facilitation of international trade and an impartial third party which enables the organisation to negotiate contracts and secure funding for projects that benefit its membership. The Premier has been engaging with local and foreign business chambers and associations on a strategic agenda to build an economic coalition around the programme for Transformation, Modernisation and Re-industrialisation. “I am leading government engagements with firms and industries that are critical to our goal of reigniting our economy. Specifically

“We are working hard to mobilise all sectors of the economy in the province around the urgency to deal with the crisis of unemployment, poverty and inequality,” said Premier Makhura.

we have engaged with firms and clusters of firms in the automotive and components; machinery and capital equipment manufacturers; aviation, aerospace and defence industry; food and beverages; Business Process Outsourcing and ICT as well as mining,” Makhura told business people at the conference. He reiterated that Gauteng is open to business and is willing to assist businesses wanting to migrate to the province by easing the cost of doing business and cutting red tape. President of JCCI Ernest Mahlaule said all sectors should be involved in the implementation of Premier Makhura’s TMR programme. JCCI provides entrepreneur platform for key stakeholder engagements on issues that are necessary in reigniting an inclusive economic growth. “There is a need for all of us to engage in the implementation of the Transformation, Mordenisation and Re-industrialisation programme so that we take Gauteng Province forward,” said Mahlaule.

MEC for Finance and e-Government, Barbara Greecy (pictured) has announced that in upcoming months the department invest in Wi-Fi connectivity in Sedibeng and West Rand , during the eKasi ICT Summit held at Walter Sisulu Square, Soweto. MEC Greecy was responding to questions posed by innovative township business owners who are technology savvy, when she announced the new roll-out of Wi-Fi in the two corridors of the Gauteng Provincial Government Development Plan. “In the next six months we’re prioritising connectively in the West Rand and Sedibeng, and the reason we’re doing that is that those are the most marginalised areas of our province where the municipalities have not been able to invest in ICT infrastructure, so we think that it is a priority at this stage that we start to facilitate

that investment,” said the MEC. The MEC said the three metros that is Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni have already rolled out and connected over 1500 Wi-Fi hotspots so far which has helped residents in the cities to access free Wi-Fi. Responding to the outcry of expensive data rates which makes it hard for township businesses to afford data rates. MEC Creecy said it is not the responsibility of provincial government to change data costs but the national government, and that the provincial government will lobby the national government to address this issue. She said that township businesses that do not have access to the internet can go to Thusong Centres which are generic government assistance centres throughout the province. By Gopolang Leepile (GPG)
