WELCOME TO THE RIVER CITY IN GAUTENG!

Mapepeza Reporter

On Wednesday, May 6, the world witnessed the unveiling of Gauteng’s newest city, the Vaal River City. Gauteng’s Southern Corridor, which encompasses the economy of the Sedibeng district, is giving rise to the creation of new industries, new economic nodes and new cities. Celebrating the Official Opening of the Vaal River City Development, the event included David Makhura, Premier of Gauteng Province, MEC Jacob Mamabolo, the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality (including Emfuleni, Lesedi, Midvaal councillors) and various stakeholders, Mr Reggie Kukama, CEO of River City Development Company and distinguished guests.

BELOW: Artist’s impression of the mega-project that is set to cost about R11-Billion to develop in 5 years time, in-line with the VAAL 21 Vision.

This city will cater to a wide array of residents and Reginald Kukama, CEO, of the Vaal River City Development Company said that, “This unique residential and commercial development will enable the greater public to have access to river frontage and offer the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the parklands and landscaped expanse. Their centralised civic buildings means that residents will have access to essential services as it becomes a centralised Metro and will offer affordable housing on prime river location.” READ MORE ON PAGE 3

Man dies after 12-hour wait at Natalspruit!

IT ALL STARTED in Katlehong township, in the City of Ekurhuleni, when Mabuya began struggling to walk on Friday 27 March.

ABOUT THE VAAL RIVER CITY HYDROPOLIS

• The next five years will see the mobilisation of more than R10-billion in public and private investments. • Shift the economy of this corridor away from its over reliance on the steel industry. • Diversification to include tourism and entertainment, agro-processing and logistics.

Government & Private sector goals:

• Support 32 black farmers to plant barley and maize to be supplied to the nearby Heineken Brewery. The project will create 1 000 permanent jobs per annum over three years. • Over the next five years, more than 120 000 houses in Sedibeng will be built in Boiketlong; Golden Highway; Evaton; Vereeniging, Savanah City, Ratanda and R59 Corridor.

• Via this Corridor we will continue to support the Gauteng Highlands Development; a mixed-use R40-billion investment made up of industrial and residential space that is aimed at creating. • 25 000 direct and indirect jobs.

The development will:

•Capture the historical legacy of our country, through cultural themes, historical artwork, cultural sites and architecture that represents this history. • Actualise the concept of a River City and its excellent location. • Offer a lifestyle experience near the water through bird parks, vast walkways and picnic spots that are accessible to all. • Provide a unique residential and commercial development, with road infrastructure and investment that will capture economic value. • Create a large infrastructure development that will stimulate economic activity

His wife, Nosiphiwe Malangabi, took him to a nearby clinic, which then called for an ambulance to rush Mabuya to Natalspruit Hospital. At the hospital, casualty ward staff diagnosed him with bacterial meningitis, or a swelling of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord caused by an infection. Bacterial meningitis is a serious condition and can leave patients with complications including brain damage and hearing loss. About two hours later when Mabuya’s family left, he had still

not been allocated a bed and was being treated on a gurney in a hospital corridor. According to Malangabi, when the family returned hours later, Mabuya was still being treated in a corridor.

When the family questioned the state of the intravenous drip as well as why he was lying in a corridor instead of in a ward, Malangabi alleges that a verbal argument ensued between the family and a matron. Malangabi now alleges that poor care by hospital staff contributed to her husband’s death about a day later on 29 March.

Is there a place for dagga in medicine?

“If the right procedures were followed and my husband was attended I believe he would still be alive,” she told OurHealth.

Is there a place for dagga in medicine? BY Wilma Stassen (Health-e News)

THE legalisation of medical marijuana came under the spotlight again after the late Inkatha Freedom Party MP Mario OrianiAmbrosini’s “Medical Innovation Bill” was revived in parliament recently.

“All medicines, be it alternative medicines or herbs, have side effects.” Common side effects of cannabis are an increase heart beat, a drop in blood pressure, blood-shot eyes, loss of motivation, anxiety and impaired cognitive functioning, among others.

The Bill relapsed when its sponsor, Ambrosini, died on August 16, 2014. He took his own life after battling with late-stage lung cancer for more than a year. He admitted to using marijuana for medicinal purposes to treat his cancer when he first proposed the bill to parliament in February 2014.

Puff, pass & regulate

Despite the side effects, Muller believes that dagga could be used in medicine as long as it is strictly regulated to avoid abuse of the substance. This includes controlling the production and processing of marijuana, which involves extracting the active ingredient from the plant and dispensing it at predetermined doses.

“Cannabis has been proven to have some medicinal qualities and medical marijuana is used commercially in several countries to treat certain ailments.” The bill calls for the immediate establishment of a medical centre where at least 100 patients can be legally treated with medical marijuana, a treatment Ambrosini described as “effective and harmless”.

The cannabis plant has more than 100 active ingredients of which only one, 9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is used in the production of medical marijuana. THC has a potent effect on the central nervous system and is also the chemical that causes euphoria, which is responsible for it being abused as a recreational drug. “The medical benefits of cannabis have been overhyped and is a smokescreen to try and decriminalise dagga”

But some experts disagree with this statement. “People tend to think that natural substances have no side effects and are safe – but there is nothing further from the truth,” says Dr Gerbus Muller, a clinical pharmacologist and toxicologist, and a former lecturer at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

two hours. “Even though Mr Mabuya was nursed in the corridor due to bed shortages, he was constantly monitored by the nursing and medical personnel,” said Hamca, who added that Mabuya’s family will soon be invited back to the hospital to discuss their concerns. He added that Natalspruit Hospital was not alone in bed shortages. “Due to an increase in medical patient volumes resulting from a fastchanging disease burden, the whole public health system experiences shortages of beds as patients require admission instead of being treated as outpatients,” he told OurHealth. “To address this challenge, hospital management has moved the admission ward to a bigger ward,” added Hamca, say-

ing that MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu recently announced a new electronic bed management system would be rolled out provincially to better manage hospital beds. “Some women have waited since July last year for a colposcopy, which is utterly unacceptable,” said Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom said in a statement in response to the story. “The new Natalspruit Hospital was opened last year with great fanfare by Premier David Makhura who said that it was ‘our hospital of the future,’ Bloom added. “It has so far been a great disappointment, with overcrowding and long waiting periods in certain departments.” -Health-e News
