ZaseMzumbe VW Crew gives back to Ratanda again!

STORIES FROM PAGE 1

“NO MORE BUCKET TOILETS!”

After a successful charity event held earlier this year, ZaseMzumbe VolksWagen Crew from Ratanda township held another give-away on Friday afternoon, April 17. The group gathered at Boneha Primary School and Sithokomele to hand over school uniforms and some inspiration. The children rushed out of their

classes to meet the crew, hearing the roaring sounds of revving engines echoing at the school entrance. The day was filled with fun and excitement for the youngsters, seeing some of the finest customized cars around. ZaseMzumbe VW Crew bought the whole team to this gathering, featuring some classic Golf MK1s

and Citi-Golfs. The donation of new school uniform to deserving children was also done November last year. ZaseMzumbe VW Crew promise the donations will become frequent as time progresses. The efforts from the group were well received by teachers, who thanked the team on behalf of their respective schools.

a struggle for her and the family. "The bucket is only removed once a week. I don't recall how many times I had to buy Jeys Fluid to eliminate the smell and flies," said Mngwevu.

"The elimination of the bucket system will go a long way to restore the dignity of the residents of this township. We are going to eradicate this bucket system in the area and provide the residents with proper toilets," said Mamabolo.

Lesedi Local Municipality Executive Mayor Lerato Maloka said that the municipality was working with the provincial government to address the issue of services and housing in the area. "We currently have an active housing project at Obed Mthombeni-Nkosi for some of the people who live in informal settlements. We will also move some of them to the 238 stands that have been formalised and will have basic services," said Maloka.

Among the people using the bucket system is Nomusa Mngwevu (67) who stays with her family of 14 in a shack. She said the use of a bucket system for 15 years has been

“We come together as a nation to say those who hate and commit acts of xenophobic violence inspired by hatred do so not in our name,” declared Gauteng Premier David Makhura during a prayer meeting with faith-based organisations and foreign shop keepers in Claremont on Sunday, April 19. The meeting held at the Church of Johannesburg Harvest Time was dedicated to fighting xenophobic attacks that has spread to the province since violence first broke out in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal a few weeks ago. The recent xenophobic attacks have resulted in the gruesome murder of Mozambican man, Emmanuel Sithole who was stabbed in full view of the community in Alexandra on Saturday morning. Three suspects have since been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Sithole. Since the outbreak of the xenophobic violence, 154 people have been arrested in the province.

tomorrow they will be coming to you,” said Premier Makhura. Hussein Noor, a shop keeper from Newclare was one of the foreign shop keepers who attended the prayer meeting for peace and friendship led by Bishop DK Adams and Imam Achmat Bakkie. “My uncle was injured during a robbery in our shop last month. People who commit these acts of violence have no mercy. We are supposed to love one another as brothers, we are all Africans and human beings,” said Noor. Noor said hatred was behind the violence and killings inflicted on foreign nationals. Imam Achmat Bakkie urged the community to tolerate one another. “Our diversity makes up the beautiful colours of the rainbow,” said Bakkie. The premier called on the nation to defeat xenophobia like they defeated apartheid.

Premier Makhura said the xenophobic attacks are not a reflection of this country. “Any act of violence, of hatred and murder of any human being is a great offence to what we stand for as a people. We say no to xenophobia in the strongest terms possible”. The Premier said communities must mobilise to fight against xenophobia. “Xenophobia is a serious threat; what these people are doing is criminal. Today they are attacking foreign nationals and

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has strongly condemned the recent xenophobic violence in KZN and Gauteng.

Say no to xenophobia!

Let us remember those last days of the struggle, when one of our first black leader was elected president, who was voted by majority. In 1994, as it was the first time for blacks in South Africa to vote and voice out their concerns and views, and on that day, Mr Nelson Mandela was elected as president of a new South Africa. They gave up their freedom to uplift the black-nation of our country South-Africa. So, we need to take note that our neighbouring countries helped our fellow brother and sister comrades by providing shelter while apartheid occurred in South Africa. Not all immigrants migrate to South Africa illegally; some of our sisters and brothers are married to those people we call foreigners. Let those who are illegal be sent back, this shows that the borders of our country need to be strengthened.

I am calling all South-Africans especially in Ratanda Township not to partake in this xenophobic act. All I am requesting is peace and tolerance around Ratanda and the country as a whole. “We are all brothers and sisters in this country, Viva Ubuntu! Long-live to peace”. Sylvia Dipuo Nkosi (wife to Late Mayor Cllr. Obed John Nkosi)
