Message to all women in south africa

By Deputy Minister of Communications, Stella NdabeniAbrahams (Opinion Piece) In August we celebrate the numerous actions by courageous women on our road to democracy. Women’s Month is also an opportunity to reflect on the strides we have made since democracy. Most people associate Women’s Month with August 9, 1956 - when thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in defiance of unjust pass laws. However, we dare not forget how 700 women marched with Charlotte Maxeke in Bloemfontein in June 1913 in defiance of the pass system. Nor should we forget the contributions of

countless other heroines whose selfless acts paved the way for our democracy. It is often said that change is the only constant. Throughout our history there have been seismic moments which have ushered in significant change. However, there are also times when change is frustratingly slow. One such case is the empowerment of women since 1994. While we can rightly claim many victories and can point to our Constitution, which protects the rights of all, and the raft of legislation that government has implemented, there is still room for much improvement. Some might argue that em-

powering women is nothing but a feel-good exercise. However, history has taught us that economies grow and flourish when women are involved. When more women work, economies grow.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE Clock’s still ticking… but time to act is now! NEW TSAKANE LIBRARY UNDERWAY

Public libraries are "More than just books and banks of computers, libraries are still places where individuals gather to explore, interact, and imagine." This is a according to an article published on www.publiclibrariesonline.org which highlights the reasons why a library is the most important place in a town.

The construction process began in April 2015 and is set to be concluded in June next year. Upon its completion the library will house an extensive collection of books, audio visual materials, modern IT equipment, study areas and access to amenities necessary for increasing literacy within the community.

For those reasons the City Of Ekurhuleni is continuing to prioritise the development of such amenities in its communities and residents of Tsakane will soon benefit from a new library.

The City is on a drive to build libraries across Ekurhuleni with an aim to keep up with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA)'s theme "Connect @ Your Library". This theme is believed to resonate with library users as it encourages them to connect with each other, connect with knowledge and information, and the electronic resources, technology and professional support offered at their public library.

The R16 million facility in extension 11 will provide easy access and relief to library users residing farther than the old central Tsakane Library which is currently servicing the vast community.

The City has over 40 public libraries across the region and the construction of the new Tsakane Library will contribute invaluably towards building a conversant citizenry.

In any city in the world, a library can be regarded as a facility which builds a community, is a center for diverse populations, the arts, is a university and a champion for the youth.

Getting ever more people actively involved in our economy is essential. Globally, economies are stuck in a low-growth scenario that is causing untold hardship. Our own economy is still growing, albeit at a very slow pace. Getting more people and especially more women, involved in the economy will help to change this.

These, and other laws, have set us on a path to a sustainable future where women are active in all spheres of society. However, progress has been slow in certain sectors and the goal of 50 percent parity is still a long way off.

The actions we take now will determine our fortunes in years to come. The National Development Plan aspires to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030.

In many respects, government has set the pace and has done well in empowering women in economic, governance and political spheres. Conversely, the private sector is way off the pace.

It calls for a unity of purpose to grow an inclusive economy. It emphasises that we must continue to build capabilities and ensure that government and other leaders work together to solve complex problems. For its part, government has already begun to put the building blocks in place for this future. An important part of this approach is to lay the groundwork for empowering women so that they can take their rightful place in society.

The recently published Businesswomen’s Association of SA’s annual census of corporate leadership makes for sobering reading. “The average percentage of women directors for the largest 25 organisations based on market capitalisation is 24.7percent. Large organisations are slow to transform in gender parity.” the authors say. The overall picture of the census is one of slow progress at the pinnacle of influence and power. “The findings are disappointing. The conversation has continued for decades and yet very little has changed. Women are still a minority at the top echelons of organisations. Even though there have been marginal improvements, South Africa businesses are well below the 50 percent target’’

In 2000, South Africa established the National Policy Framework for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality. Chapter 5 of the revised 2013 Women’s Empowerment and Equality Bill aims to strengthen the enforcement of compliance by both government and the private sector in matters of gender mainstreaming and equality. In May 2009, the President pronounced on the establishment of a Ministry of Women, Children and People with Disabilities. In May 2014, the President announced a dedicated Ministry for Women in the Presidency tasked with elevating women’s issues.

It may be tempting to dismiss this as nothing more than figures, or to argue that developing women leaders takes time. But the reality is that we do not have time. The clock is ticking and if we are to reduce inequality, poverty and unemployment by 2030 we must act now.

STATUE UNVEILED IN HONOUR OF MAMBERTHA GXOWA!

GS COLLEGE CELEBRATES THE DECADE OF THE ARTISANS Written by Thembisa Shologu CITY OF EKURHULENI -

On Wednesday, August 19, scores of woman from all over the country converged at the Keditselana Cultural Village in Katlehong to honour the struggle stalwart’s life after her death at the age of 76 years in 2010. A bronze statue of Mam Bertha, as she was affectionately known, raising a triumphant right hand clenched fist salute symbolizing her solidarity with the courageous woman of 1956 stands erect at the Cultural Village as a constant reminder to the woman of today to carry the baton of fighting for complete liberation of woman and children. Gauteng Premier David Makhura has called on residents to commit into always following on MaBertha Gxowa’s footsteps of freeing women, especially during this Women’s Month. “She was a disciplinarian, disliked chaos and corruption with all her heart. Anywhere there is such, we will confront it in her honour. She was always on the move, she liked dirtying her hands, she was not an armchair critic,” said Makhura. Unveiling the stalwart’s statue at Ke-ditselane in the City of Ekurhuleni, Gauteng Premier Makhura said people should reflect on the right things that would make her happy if she was still alive. He warned those taking part in corrupt acts that government was coming for them. “Just know that your days are numbered. She would be happy to see that we are a responsive government, delivering projects on time and within budget,” said Makhura. City of Ekurhuleni Executive mayor Mondli Gungubele said Gxowa was about delivery and that when she spoke people listened. “She was warm but firm.

She was a smart dresser and hated it when people were not properly dressed,” said Mayor Gungubele. Gungubele said that the statue represented an important history because the future only made sense where history was properly organised. “Relevance is important. This freedom we are enjoying is the product of their sweat, blood, tears and suffering. Let us make sure our kids know this history,” he urged. Chairman of the Bertha Gxowa Foundation, Gwen Ramokgopa said MaGxowa selflessly served the people. “She died with her boots strapped, serving the people. In her honour let us ensure service delivery happens. Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Molebatsi Bopape said: “It is our responsibility as women to play our role in the community, not just in the kitchen, but by being at the centre of the economy, that’s the ideal Mam Bertha fought for.” We must remember that this democracy was hard won, therefore let us not take it for granted,” said Ramokgopa. Gxowa was born and bred in the old Germiston Location and died in November 2010. In fact, she was one of the key figures in the organization of the historic march to the Union Buildings, which ultimately led to the emancipation of women from the bondages of the apartheid regime. Her gravesite, situated at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg, was declared a Heritage Site by the Provincial Heritage Resource Authority of Gauteng in 2014.

Local high school learners gathered at the ‘TVET Week’ hosted by Gert Sibande TVET college to learn about the exciting careers in being an artisan. Written by Stephen Seakgwe DIPALESENG - On Friday, August 14, School pupils from around Bal-

four gathered around the Gert Sibande TVET College’s Balfour campus to get some information and inspiration on becoming South Africa’s future artisans.

Gert Sibande TVET College hosted an event called the TVET week to commemorate the importance of artisan careers and related opportunities. Stakeholders in the local private, public and civil society sectors were present to unpack the vast career field of artisans. GS College partnered with Sibanye Gold Mine, Dipaleseng Local Municipality’s Engineering Department and Dipaleseng Bus and Truck Forum amongst others. The South African government has declared the period from 2014 to 2024 as ‘The Decade for Artisans’- a challenge well received by TVET institutions to work together with government, in achieving the NDP/ MTSF goal of producing more than 30 000 well-skilled artisans by 2024. Scholars around the country now have the opportunity before them to become skilled artisans; young men and women have been abundantly blessed with colleges that offer variety of programmes geared to equip them with the power to build their future.
