President Jacob Zuma has called upon South Africans to honour Mrs Victoria Mxenge as the country marks women's contribution in the struggle for freedom and the development of the country. The 1st of August marked the 30th Anniversary of the passing of the struggle stalwart and women's rights activist. "As we commence the activities of celebrating Women's Month, we call upon all South Africans to remember our struggle stalwart and women's rights activist, Mama Victoria Mxenge who was assassinated in Durban in 1st August 1985. "Mama Mxenge, the wife of the struggle hero and African National Congress (ANC) leader Comrade Griffith Mxenge and an activist and leader in her own right, must be remembered for her fearless and selfless leadership she showed as a member of United Democratic Front (UDF) during struggle against apartheid particularly in KwaZuluNatal,” said President Zuma. Mama Mxenge, a professional lawyer, was part of the defence team in the 1984 Treason Trial, against leaders of the UDF and the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) in the Pietermaritzburg Supreme Court. She was brutally assassinated in front of her children at her Umlazi home in Durban in 1st August 1985. In 2006, Mama Mxenge was posthumously awarded the National Order of Luthuli for her excellent contribution to the field of law and sacrifices made in the fight against apartheid oppression in South Africa. President Zuma has called on youth, particularly young women, to emulate the dedication, resilience and discipline of Mama Mxenge and other fearless heroines that the country would be celebrating during the Women's Day on Sunday, 9th August 2015.

According to the Presidency, a female person who allegedly goes by the name of Pink Nomathamsanqa Vena – who was reportedly until three months

ago an executive at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) - approaches senior executives in companies looking for employment or favours. APPLY NOW FOR ADMISSION TO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

HIGHER Education and Training Deputy Minister, Mduduzi Manana, has encouraged learners to apply at institutions of higher learning for the 2016 academic year now.

September is the cut-off deadline for many institutions of higher learning. The campaign is aimed at encouraging learners to apply on time for admission to post-school institutions to avoid the last minute rush at the beginning of each academic year. The campaign runs from March to September each year. “The campaign was initiated by the department, following the unfortunate incident that happened at the University of Johannesburg in 2012, where a mother died in a stampede whilst accompanying her child to submit a late application.

“The career guidance component of the campaign seeks to inform learners about career choices available within the post-school education and training (PSET) sector,” the Ministry said. Among the learners who attended the event was Silindile Kubheka. The 18-year-old is President of the Learner Representative Council at Mhlawazini High School. She encouraged learners to heed the call and apply on time. “We promise to obtain above 80% pass for matric so we can benefit fully on the opportunities shared by the Honourable Deputy Minister,” said Kubheka. The Deputy Minister encouraged learners to consider Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges as an alternative to university education because the skills needs of the

3

country necessitate a massive production of artisans from TVET colleges.

He also promoted the 100 occupations in high demand list that was released by the Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande in 2014. This will assist learners to make informed career choices to avoid a situation where they too join a cohort of unemployed and unemployable graduates, said the Ministry. The department is currently running a career development services centre to assist learners with career advice. Deputy Minister Manana encouraged learners to use their cell phones to reach the centre by sending an SMS or a “Please Call Me” to 072 204 5056. - SAnews.gov.za

Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Mduduzi Manana, strongly urges learners to apply at tertiary school as early as possible.

PRESIDENT ZUMA SENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILIES OF SLAIN POLICE OFFICERS

CITY CALLS ON ARTISTS TO ENTER THIS YEAR’S TMFAA

CITY OF EKURHULENI - By Stephen Seakgwe

SOUTH AFRICAN President Jacob Zuma recently visited the family of Mr Simon Mabatamela in Kathlehong, the member of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) who was brutally killed in the line of duty at a shopping complex in Johannesburg during an armed robbery. Members of the Buthelezi and Shabalala families, who also lost loved ones who were members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), joined the Mabatamela family, and united in sorrow. President Zuma carried his words of comfort and condolence to all three families and dedicated government to taking drastic action to arrest and brings to justice the perpetrators of the murderous acts. He retold his call for members of the Police to defend themselves against criminals when they are attacked, and emphasized that they must do it within what the law allows.

President Zuma also stated his concern at the number of guns - legal and illegal - in society, and expressed in particular, unease about guns in the hands of the criminals.

CITY OF EKURHULENI - By Stephen Seakgwe

He said government with society; must together determine how to effectively rid society of guns and whether the Police were sufficiently trained to protect society, and protect the country from this ambush by criminals. “It saddens us that members of the Police die in the hands of criminals in this fashion, particularly as our Police come under heavy criticism every time they defend themselves against danger. It’s probably time for us to discuss as a nation, how we want Police to protect us. Any attack on the Police is an attack on the State and our nation. It is unacceptable and we must work together to stop it,” said President Zuma.

ON its 28th installment this year, the highly acclaimed Thami Mnyele Fine Art Awards (TMFAA) is finally here.

“I have personally conveyed our heartfelt condolences to the three families we visited. I wish to thank the Mabatamela family for allowing the Buthelezi and Shabalala families to join us in this fashion, it is highly unprecedented during a mourning period and that’s because it’s also highly unprecedented to lose so many members of our police service in a short space of time. We once again appeal to members of the public to help us bring these criminals to justice as soon as possible.” - President Zuma on August 3.

According to department data systems records for arrivals and departures at ports of entry, for June 2015, 132 353 children were processed. “Of these, 1 878 were recorded as having not met requirements, placing compliance levels at 98 percent,” the department said.

“There is no evidence conclusively to say since new immigration regulations took effect there’s been a sharp decline in numbers of foreign travellers arriving in South Africa and that jobs had been lost,” the department said.

Under the new immigration legislation amendments, which came into effect in June, South Africans and foreign nationals travelling to and from South Africa with children under the age of 18 are required to produce unabridged birth certificates.

Arrivals of foreign children for June was 57 436, with departures at 74 917. Compliance for July was more than 99 percent as the movement for minors was 216 259. July arrivals for foreign children were 128 839, with their departures at 87 420.

MORE GAUTENG RESIDENTS PAYING ETOLL BILLS

“Art is a unique form of expression, as the City Of Ekurhuleni we endeavor to offer our citizens a platform to express themselves in a skillful way,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) says there has been an increase in the payment of etolls, since Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a new dispensation on etolls in May.

“Furthermore, this fine art competition is an initiative aimed at honouring the renowned revolutionary artist, the late Thami Mnyele,” continued Gadebe.

Motorists are paying up to 50% less on their tariffs and those who have failed to pay in the past are eligible for a 60% discount on their debts.

The adjudication process for the 2015 TMFAA competition will be facilitated by Les Cohn, Richman M. Buthelezi, Nontobeko Ntombela, John Fleetwood and Noko Mello.

SANRAL’s Chief Financial Officer, Inge Mulder, said the revised forecasts clearly showed that month-on-month there was an upward trend in payment since the Deputy President’s announcement. “This is all we are saying, the facts don’t lie,” says Mulder.

When Statistics South Africa released its 2014 Tourism report it noted that the salient characteristics of the 2014 tourists did not differ much from observations from previous years. “South Africa’s regulations are not onerous, but rationale. They are applied similarly in some countries, including guidelines from the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Schengen countries,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

CITY IMPLEMENTS WATER LOSS ERADICATION PROJECT

Traffic control taking place in various parts of Germiston to caution motorists of construction work being carried out in Germiston CBD. Ekurhuleni general workers digging a trench on Meyers street where the new Poly-vinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes will be laid.

She said when the Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced that an advisory panel would be set up to review the project, it caused uncertainty with an immediate and steep drop in income from a high of R120 million in June 2014 to R45 million in January 2015. SANRAL said, after the announcement in May that the user-pay principle will stay but the tariffs will be reduced, etoll cash receipts began recovering and the trend is positive, from R61 million in April 2015 to R76 million in May, and R78 million in June and R82 million in July. SANRAL’s spokesperson Vusi Mona said this meant that more motorists were paying their etoll bills. “Most toll roads take between 16 and 22 years to break even. We are on track to beat that figure,” he said. - SAnews.gov.za

CITY OF EKURHULENI - By Stephen Seakgwe

IN bolstering its efforts to eradicate water loss and ensuring citizens have access to an adequate water supply, the City of Ekurhuleni has embarked on a R19.5 million project in the Germiston CBD. Germiston is one of the oldest areas in Ekurhuleni therefore its infrastructure and piping systems are gradually reaching the end of their lifespan. As a result, more than half (53%) of the water supply to the CBD was recorded as water losses. “The piping system in the Germiston CBD comprises mostly of steel, cast iron and asbestos infrastructure that inevitably rusts as it ages,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe. “The water loss eradication programme is therefore not only aimed at saving this precious resource that has no substitute, but it’s also aimed at safeguarding the quality of drinking water sup-

plied to our residents,” he continued. As the water network in the Germiston CBD area is upgraded the existing pipes will be replaced with underground polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes. Presently a total of 14 428 meters of PVC pipes have been installed and a total of 18 509 meters is yet to be laid. Once all aged pipes have been replaced the City will disable the old water network and switch to the new one which is expected to decrease water loss occurrences. The municipality wishes to thank its residents for their co-operation and urges motorists and pedestrians to be patient while construction work is being carried out. Customers will also be notified in advance of the water supply interruptions that will be implemented to make way for connections to take place.

EMPD officers cooking for orphans at Sinethemba Home-based Care as part of their 67 Minutes for Mandela activities in Delmore informal settlement on Saturday, July 25. CITY OF EKURHULENI - By Mapepeza Reporter

“I admire young people who are concerned with the affairs of their community and the nation perhaps because I also became involved in the struggle whilst I was still at school.” These are the words of the late celebrated hero, Nelson Mandela. In continuing his legacy this Mandela month the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s (EMPD) Social Crime Prevention unit held a drug awareness programme over the past weekend. The youth and families in Delmore informal settlement where educated about the dangers and effects of drug and alcohol abuse. Delmore is reported to have the highest rate of drugs and substance abuse in the Boksburg area and the EMPD officers saw the need to

get involved in the community and demonstrate to them that they are not an enemy, but also care about the wellbeing of the residents. “We are here to offer assistance and say that, as officers, we not your enemy. Together we can overcome the social ills in this area only if the youth are willing to change and stay clear of this Nyaope drug that is destroying our future generations, “said Klass Dube, an officer in the Social Crime Prevention unit. Amongst the stakeholders invited was the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence who gave a talk about the dangers of Nyaope and the behavioural changes parents should look out for in their children.

“Our young people are susceptible to drug use, so this programme was much needed. Someone had to speak about these issues to young people because we are afraid to confront the culprits ourselves,” said Lindeni Mabaso a resident in the area. As part of the Mandela Day activities EMPD officers cooked for the orphans at Sinethemba Home- based Care and donated stationery to the home. The Mobile Soup Kitchen was also involved and helped feed children from child headed households with bread and soup. Residents who have family members suffering from drug and alcohol abuse can contact the SANCA offices on 011 8920876/5 or visit www.sancanational.org to find the nearest centres to visit in their area.
