Life STYLE I
f you have glaucoma then there is a strong possibility that you also suffer from a condition known as 'dry eye'. Dry eye affects 50 to 60 per cent of people with glaucoma. If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, you will know how debilitating dry eye can be and the impact that it can have on quality of life. It affects one in three people over the age of 65.
• Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. • Glaucoma usually causes no symptoms early in its course, at which time it can only be diagnosed by regular eye examinations.
Surprisingly many people do not know that they have the condition. Dry eye syndrome, or dry eye disease, is a common condition that occurs when the eyes don't make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to the eyes drying out and becoming red, swollen and irritated. Dry eye syndrome is also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
• Age over 40 years • Family history of glaucoma • Black racial ancestry • Diabetes • History of elevated intraocular pressure • Decrease in corneal thickness and rigidity • Nearsightedness (high degree of myopia), which is the inability to see distant objects clearly • History of injury to the eye
More research is needed so that we can understand the relationship between glaucoma and dry eye syndrome and develop effective treatments for both conditions.
If you, or any of your family members, are in any of these risk categories then you should visit your local optician for an eye test. Don't put it off. Do it today!
Glaucoma quick facts
Only through research can we develop better treatments for glaucoma. Please make a donation to our Glaucoma Research appeal and help us bring forward the day when we can reverse the effects of this debilitating eye disease.
• Glaucoma is an eye disease that is often associated with elevated intraocular pressure, in which damage to the optic nerve in the eye can lead to loss of vision and even blindness.

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST ‘the silent thief of sight’
South Africa observes National Glaucoma Week 2018!
That is why Glaucoma is often called 'the silent thief of sight'.

The Anvil and the Hammer Caught between the anvil and the hammer In the forging house of a new life Transforming the pangs that delivered me Into the joy of new songs The trapping of the past, tender and tenuous Woven with fibre of sisal and Washed in the blood of the goat in the fetish hut Are laced with the flimsy glories of paved streets The jargon of a new dialectic comes with the Charisma of the perpetual search on the outlaw’s hill. Sew the old days for us, our fathers, That we can wear them under our new garment, After we have washed ourselves in The whirlpool of the many rivers’ estuary We hear their songs and rumours everyday Determined to ignore these we use snatches From their tunes Make ourselves new flags and anthems While we lift high the banner of the land And listen to the reverberation of our songs In the splash and moan of the sea by Kofi Awoonor

In 1999, Former President, Nelson Mandela announced in Umthatha, KwaZulu Natal the decision by cabinet to create a ‘freedom park’ as a symbol of national unity.

Officially termed “a leading national and international icon of humanity and freedom” as its vision. Its significance lies in its intangible values as a National heritage memorial and shrine, contributing to the spiritual healing of the land and its people from the agony and trauma caused by life sacrifices that were made by freedom fighters during the various conflicts of South Africa’s history. This is most evident at the Isivivane where the spiritual value is evidenced through the “Cleansing,

Celebrate Human Rights Day on March 21! What are human rights?
Human rights are rights that everyone should have simply because they are human. In 1948, the United Nations defined 30 articles of human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It established universal human rights on the basis of humanity, freedom, justice, and peace. The Bill of Rights preserved in our Constitution is the cornerstone of our constitutional and representative democracy. The Constitution as our supreme law means that no laws may be passed that goes against it.
Human Rights Day, 21 March
Human Rights Day in South Africa is historically linked with 21 March 1960, and the events of Sharpeville. On that day 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws. This day marked an affirmation by ordinary people, rising in unison to proclaim their rights. It became an iconic date in our country’s history that today we commemorate as Human Rights Day as a reminder of our rights and the cost paid for our treasured human rights.
to power in South Africa and formalised segregation in a succession of laws that gave the government control over the movement of Black people in urban areas. The Native Laws Amendment Act of 1952 narrowed the definition of Blacks with permanent residence in towns and cities. Legally, no Black person could leave a rural area for an urban one without a permit from the local authorities, and on arrival in an urban area, the person had to obtain a permit within 72 hours to seek work.
Black men gathered at Sharpeville without passes and presented themselves for arrest. The order was given to disperse, after which the Police opened fire on the crowd of men, women and children. Following the Sharpeville massacre, a number of black political movements were banned by the Nationalist government, but the resistance movement continued to operate underground.
