Premier Makhura welcomes the Life Esidimeni Redress Award!

Premier David Makhura has welcomed the Redress Award for the Life Esidimeni victims that was announced by Retired deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke.

On Monday, March 19, Moseneke presented his final report on the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process which was concluded in February. The Premier

accepts the findings and conclusion outlined in the report.

The arbitration process was established by Premier Makhura, following the recommendations made by the Health Ombudsman to determine a way forward such as mechanisms of redress and compensation for the families affected by the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

The affected families will each receive R20 000 for funeral expenses, R180 000 for shock and psychological trauma and R1 million in constitutional damages. Government has been ordered to pay this amount in no later than 3 months from today. “In respecting the outcomes of the arbitration process and in im-

plementing its recommendations in full, we will honour the memory of the lives lost. Whilst nothing can bring back those who have lost their lives, the families of all patients deserve the truth and accountable redress needs to be made. “We will continue to work with the families and we are committed to honouring all families by

The South African Social Security Agency held a joint media briefing with South African Post Offices to share with the people and beneficiaries of social grants on progress made on the state of readiness regarding the payment of grants leading up to 1 April 2018. “We are pleased to announce a significant state of readiness for SAPO to commence payments of social grants and assure South Africans that social grants will be paid from 01 April 2018. The relationship between SASSA and SAPO to ensure the smooth implementation of the public sector-led hybrid grants payment model has evolved positively,” said SASSA Acting CEO Pearl Bengu. SAPO CEO Bark Barnes further said that the post

office will commence with the phasing in of processes to ensure that the payment of social grants takes place without interruption as from 01 April 2018 as per service agreement between the two entities. According to both CEOs, there are a significant number of beneficiaries who have already opened Postbank accounts between January and February and some have already received their payment for March through the Postbank. The occasion was also used to encourage beneficiaries of social grants to choose a payment option that is convenient to them to receive their grants. The available options to beneficiaries are, cash payments at pay points, through merchants/supermarkets and through personal bank accounts.

Jealous Boyfriend Arrested for trying to stab a learner at school!

By Bheki Julius Radebe

A 23 year old young man had his way through the security gates of Asser Maloka Secondary School, Duduza in Nigel (pictured) last week, armed with a knife. He then went straight to a grade 10 classroom and confronted an 18 year old boy, a learner, who was busy with his school work, and asked him of his name. After the learner responded, he slapped him hard on the face, and pulled out a knife in an attempt to stab him in full view of his classmates. The learner managed to evade the knife and escaped to the school’s Staff Room, where he alerted the school authorities. Fortunately teachers managed to apprehend the intruder and disarmed him before running after his victim. Police came and arrested the intruder for trespassing, assault and being in possession of a dangerous weapon. They also discovered that the intruder went to the school after his girlfriend; also a learner at the school, had an argument with the victim, who is her classmate. After she reported the altercation to her boyfriend (the intruder), he pursued the victim at the school premises seeking to avenge her. Duduza Station Commander, Lt. Col Bheki Mhlungu, commended his members for a swift response in arresting the intruder, and says that the arrest will send a strong message that trespassing into schools is a serious offence, and that any person found in possession of a dangerous weapon shall be dealt with harshly by law enforcement. A community member, who lives around the school, is relieved that no life was lost during this incident. “When we lost a life at the school premises for the first time as the community of Duduza, unfortunately, it was that of the deputy principal, who was shot dead by intruders at Dalinceba Primary School last year. It would’ve been sad indeed that another life is taken during school hours from this incident, when there is security at the school,” says Thuli Mkhonza, a resident in the area.

LEARN TO SIGN: The Alphabet! PART ONE OF TWO PART SERIES. NEXT WEEK: Gestures

South African Sign Language (SASL) has officially been recognised as a home language in the curriculum as one of the examinable subjects for the National Senior Certificate. “It is a monumental step forward that SASL has now, for the very first time in South Africa, been officially recognised as a home language in our education system,” said the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi, in a statement. The announcement by Umalusi follows a report it released of its research study on the inclusion of SASL in the curriculum. The aim of the study was to provide guidance to Umalusi in its role as the quality assurer for SASL-Home Language, with specific reference to school-based assessment and national examinations. According to the Council, the scope of the study also encompassed understanding how Deaf learners are assessed, as well as the kind of resources and materials required for assessment, including identifying potential national moderators and evaluators. “Deaf learners in South Africa no longer need to feel like foreigners in

their own land, and at last they can exercise their rights to be taught and assessed in their own language,” said Umalusi. Recognition of SASL as a home language in the education system was highlighted by Umalusi as ground breaking as it serves to recognise “Deaf culture as a fundamental part of South African culture”. When reflecting on this momentous occasion, Umalusi chairperson John Volmink said: “Today we can say to Deaf learners that the system has fully embraced them, that their language is valued and respected, and that they now have the opportunity to learn and study and be tested through the medium of their home language.” The full details of the study are available in the report entitled, ‘Sign of the Times: The Quality of the Teaching and Assessment of South African Sign Language’. The report is available on Umalusi website: www.umalusi.org.za.

Celebrating Social Workers and the change they bring about in the society

S

ocial workers are often defined as “agents of change”, yet this role often comes with a level of frustration. As we try to function as change agents in society, we invariably encounter resistance. If people, or social service agencies, or larger social systems wanted to change; they would have done so long before we (social workers) arrived on the scene.

“So, the nature of our job is to try to get people to makesome changes to their lives, that at least a part of them resists. No wonder so many social workers get burnt out.” This view is according to a social work Blogger, C. Mathews Hawkins. Literature on social worker’s professions continues to

trend in more or less description. In lay man’s terms, Social Workers inspire hope, particularly to the vulnerable. The profession has continued to breed changes in our society through various interventions and programme. Becoming a social worker often begins with an interested notion of helping others in

One can refer to the professional as the ‘‘modernday Messiah’’ for vulnerable groups. Social workers are agents

Social workers are conscious of the battles they must fight, the forces that they can and cannot control, the political powers, bureaucracy that seeks to diminish their spirits and that of their clients and yet they continue to march on. Often than not that people have a limited view of what a social worker is and what a social worker does. Many people believe social workers to be nonprofit case managers

who work only with families and children, to be the entities that divide families than unite them. In some instances, social workers are viewed as an instrument brings order to broken families. The profession brings about change in our lives directly or indirect. Social ills have become a norm in families and society at large. Social Workers are often in the front line. ROOTS & CULTURE LEST WE FORGET OUR SPORT HEROES AND HEROINES! KNOW WHERE YOU CAME FROMTO KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING

Sport In Struggle exhibition has been launched at Freedom Park, City of Tshwane. These are some of the historical pieces we've gathered from the Department of Arts and Culture. The minister of Sports and Recreation, Thokozile Xasa led the official opening of the exhibition that to learn about many more of our sporting heroes and heroines whose careers were stunted or not celebrated and honored because of the Apartheid regime.

1. Len Taunyane & Jan Mashiani - the first two black Africans to compete in Olympic Games in 1904 whose performance was compromised by aggressive dogs, released to prevent a black man from winning the race.

2. Mary Mofokeng an early pioneer of women’s golf in SA who was forced to compete with men because of the Apartheid Sports plan yet still managed to beat them and win several local tournaments.

3. Papwa Sewgolum - a South African golfing great who also beat Gary Player and received his trophy outdoors in rain, because, due to apartheid, he was not allowed to enter the clubhouse.

Brand South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day in collaboration with Constitution Hill Today marks the commemoration of Human Rights Day - a day in remembrance of the Sharpeville massacre which took place on 21 March 1960. The massacre ensued as a result of protests against the Apartheid regime in the country. On that day 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws. This day marked an affirmation by ordinary people, rising in unison to proclaim their rights. It has since become an iconic date in the country’s history. The Bill of Rights preserved in the Constitution is the cornerstone of the constitutional and representative democracy. The Constitution as the supreme law means that no laws may be passed that goes against it. The Bill of Rights also comprehensively addresses South Africa’s history of oppression, colonialism, slavery, racism and sexism and other forms of human violations. The Bill of Rights

embeds the rights of all people in our country in an enduring affirmation of the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom. One of the ways in which Brand South Africa will deliver on this will be a collaboration with Constitution Hill, for the delivery of the annual Human rights programme on the 23rd – 25th March 2018.
