Hit and run incident injures toddler(2) and sibling (21)!
The helicopter quickly takes the injured toddler to the nearest health facility when he and his 21 year old sibling were knocked by a vehicle at the Heidelberg Road in Ratanda township recently.
Police make progress on Gang rape case in Katlehong! In mid-August this year, a woman was gang-raped by three assailants in Katlehong. The victim, following her rape ordeal got information about one of the rapist and communicated the information to the EMPD Public Order Policing Task Team members who managed to track down the man to his place of employment where he was identified by the victim. He was immediately handcuffed by police in full view of his colleagues. The EMPD POPs Task Team members’ investigations pointed to one of the three perpetrators residing in Palmridge and also were able to get information about the place of his employment. The 36 year old suspect was apprehended on Friday, September 7. “In-depth investigations are underway to bring to book the other two suspects who are still at large. The arrested suspect made a brief court appearance at Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday (September 10),” confirmed police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.

On Tuesday morning, (September 11) a van hit knocked over two siblings, aged 2 and 21 years old, when they tried to cross the road in Ratanda. The incident occurred at the Heidelberg Road between the Ratanda and Obed Nkosi section, allegedly the car tried to drive away from the potholes and hit the toddler. Unaware of the incident, the driver was stopped by two other drivers behind him, who showed him what he did and the community called the police officers to help. Police arrived on the scene with an ambulance, and the paramedics confirmed that the young boy was badly injured on the head. Minutes later, the medical helicopter came to take the kid to save his life. The family members were worried that the boy’s condition when they saw the helicopter take off, something that was a pain shared with witnesses in the community. The driver of van was escorted by the police, with no apparent arrest in place. Witnesses speculate that the driver was just driving and the kids just jumped suddenly on the road, trying to cross over.
Izinyoka connections in Tembisa result in communities fighting!
The communities of Liliba, Mangweni, Moyeni, Ilidinga and Ndulwini sections in Tembisa have had several power failures in the recent weeks due to the illegal electricity connections by the residents of the nearby Madelukufa informal settlement. Tensions reached a boiling point on Tuesday (September 11) and fights ensued resulting in damages to property from both sides. The confrontations were as a result of the residents of Madelukufa informal settlement stealing electricity which led to power tripping continually with the nearby Tembisa residents bearing the brunt. Realizing that the minor fights had the potential of escalating to a full-scale war the police intervened.
“The SAPS, Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) members and Energy Department personnel on Wednesday, September 12 from 4am, launched a special operation aimed at removing illegal connections and apprehending those responsible for the violence and illegal connections,” said the EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago. Six residents of Madeukufa informal community responsible for the high-scale illegal power connections were arrested as well as 47 people for public violence. All the illegal connections were removed by the CoE Energy Department personnel and the damaged boxes fixed. All fifty-three suspects were detained at Tembisa police station and appeared at the Tembisa Magistrates Court.
Ekurhuleni honours heroes of Joburg fire! Guateng Govt. evacuates nine other buildings to assess non-compliance! On Tuesday, September 11, twenty courageous fire fighters who heeded the call to assist in the blaze that engulfed the Bank of Lisbon building in Johannesburg recently were honoured for their bravery by the Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina at the Banquet Hall in Germiston Civic Centre. Speaking to the brave men and woman who risk their lives to save others, the Mayor acclaimed the courageousness displayed by the firefighters in responding without hesitation to assist firefighters in the City of Johannesburg. “We called on you firefighters to assist us as government in a situation that was almost getting out of hand and you responded positively to the call to serve the country and in addition to serving the City Ekurhuleni, were you are employed,” Mayor Masina said. The Mayor further stated that the City of Ekurhuleni has shown capabilities through a dedicated staff and equipment that was used to during the blaze and that through its equipment the city is geared to avert human tragedies in the future. The team of firefighters responded to the request by the City of Johannesburg with a water tanker that was dispatched from Alberton Fire Station with 2 crew members and was deployed there for the entire night. More resources were later requested on September 6, and the City responded to the call with 20 qualified personnel members which consisted of crew commanders and managers and eleven firefighters.
Firefighting units such a water tanker, grass unit, ambassador trailer and hydraulic platform were deployed. Of the firefighting units deployed, the hydraulic platform vehicle became the most important fire fighting vehicles which managed to extend to heights where other equipment could not reach. The vehicle was used to pump water into the building through the 7th Floor for the entire operation after its arrival. It was the main water supplier into the structure utill the fire was declared extinguished. On the following day (September 13), the three Johannesburg firefighters who lost their lives in the fire at the Gauteng Health Department building were honoured with a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony. Simphiwe Moropane (28), Mduduzi Ndlovu (40) and Khathutshelo Muedi (37) lost their lives while responding to the fire that erupted at The Bank of Lisbon building in central Johannesburg. Workers union, South African Liberating Public Service Workers Union, (SALIPSWU) has came come out to suspect foulplay behind the fire incident at the Bank of Lisbon. “SALIPSWU is not fooled neither bamboozled nor hoodwinked, about what the citizens are made to believe that the burning down of the building that housed three Gauteng Government Departments was due to not meeting the Health and Safety standards”, says Revolutionary Thobile Ntola, Secretary General of the union. “SALIPSWU smells a rotten rat here. The 23th floor where the fire started, we are told by reliable and independent sources that it is the Legal Department, where all documents, files, folders and information are kept,” says Ntola.

The report, which was presented on 27 August 2018, revealed that The Bank of Lisbon was non-compliant with occupational health and safety (OHS) standards, as it only had 21% compliance against the norm of 85%. Other affected departments include provincial Human Settlements and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Health, Social Development and the Office of the Premier. In reaction to this incidents, the Gauteng Provincial Government announced that it was evacuating the nine buildings that do not meet the minimum OHS standards so that urgent work can be undertaken to ensure compliance. The Heads of Departments have instructed officials to report to temporary service sites including regional, district and satellite branches.
Minister Motshekga shocked at teacher stabbing incident!
Following the recently alleged fatal stabbing of a teacher by a 17-year-old pupil, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has expressed shock and called for schools to be safe spaces for learners and teachers. “The death of the 24-year-old [teacher] can only be described as an abhorrent travesty. It is heart-breaking to loose such a young teacher, who still had so much to offer and so much potential for greatness in such a pointless and tragic manner,” said Motshekga. Police have apprehended the learner, who was allegedly reprimanded the day before by the teacher, for a minor incident involving skipping the queue for the National School Nutrition Programme. According to the department, the stabbing incident happened in full view of a class that was in the process of writing an examination in the North West. The said pupil has been suspended.
Services have since been deployed to the school to provide counselling. This comes on the heels of another incident in Gauteng, where a learner was arrested for pointing a gun at a teacher. “We cannot and will not tolerate delinquency and lawlessness in our schools. We all need to ensure that our schools are safe spaces for learning and teaching. Parents, communities and law enforcement agencies all need to play their role to ensure that together we raise caring, responsible citizens, and that our schools are protected from evil elements that threaten to destabilise them “At no time can it be acceptable to bring weapons or any other prohibited substances such as drugs and alcohol into our schools,” said the Minister. Motshekga urged parents to be vigilant and ensure their children do not leave home and come to school with weapons.

SASSA ready for October payments!
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says it is ready for the October payment cycle where all social grant payments will be made by the agency, in partnership with the South African Post Office (SAPO). The contract for Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), which ends at the end of September 2018, is a Net1 subsidiary which is currently responsible for paying less than 10% of beneficiaries this month. SASSA spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, said that in phasing out CPS at the end of the month, SASSA will be in full compliance with directions of the Constitutional Court and there will be no need to ask for another extension, “contrary to what sceptics wrongfully predicted”. Letsatsi said with 18 days to go before the September payment cycle is concluded, SASSA has already paid over R6 billion to 92% of its beneficiaries this month, noting that this is a clear sign that government will manage to insource the service of grant payments from October going forward. “Transactions have largely taken place at merchants through Point of Sale (POS) devices and over the counter at post office outlets. Withdrawals from bank Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) have reduced significantly during this month (only 10%), as compared to August. At the moment the bulk of outstanding payments are the ones done in cash at SASSA paypoints, which will be finished in record time,” Letsatsi said.

September 2018. The new SASSA card is an improvement of the old card and it does not allow deductions for things such as airtime, loans or prepaid electricity, among others. The new card also allows three free cash withdrawals at points of sale, one free withdrawal at the post office per month, free swipes at points of sale and it is accepted by all ATMs displaying the VISA sign. Letsatsi said these developments coincide with the Constitutional Court’s decision to dismiss SASSA’s application for an order declaring the actions of CPS as contempt of court. SASSA took this stand after CPS and other Net1 company employees had been reported by community members for disruptive behaviour at its paypoints. “The court did not award any costs. SASSA however, accepts the decision of the ConCourt and finds comfort in the fact that the CPS contract is coming to an end this month, and that a significant number of beneficiaries have managed to acquire the new gold SASSA card,” Letsatsi said. Beneficiaries who wish to enquire about anything related to their grants can call SASSA’s toll free on 0800 60 10 11.
Toddlers visits Ratanda elderly! The Tholimpilo was visiting old age people celebrating them, showing love and respect and showing how important they are in our community. Mrs Dlamini welcomed us with a warm heart and beautiful smile, then the children opened with a stage play and traditional dancing. When the kids started singing, one of the crèche teachers started crying tears of joy. When asked why she’s crying, she said that one day these beautiful children will be taking care of her and other people who needs help. The grandparents were very happy to have young children singing and dancing for them. Some of the senior citizens singed along with them. The children of Tholimpilo performed many acts for the elders. The children even shared the quote by Nelson Mandela and did the alphabets, plus showed us which colours rainbow have.

GERT SIBANDE TVET HOST SPRING BASH!
Gert Sibande TVET College Balfour Campus hosted its annual Spring Bash with style on Friday, September 7. Students were invited to relax and party a little after months of studying and examinations. Facilitator, Mr Zwane, opened the event with a congratulatory speech to the students and welcomed all guests to the campus. Bongani Manzana, SRC President of the college said the purpose of the event was to pray for the students writing exams, plus welcoming spring in a cool way. Local health expert, Liza Zulu from
the Balfour Health department also gave a few words to students on sexual health and other issues. Zulu and her team shared a wonderful experience and important messages to the students like “test and treat” and, “condomize one round, one condom”. Upcoming local artist, Tiger performed for students but he was not serious, but students liked it anyway (supporting their own talent). Besides the entertaining bash, the event was also used to to honour students who have represented the institution in arts, culture and athletics were honoured with awards.
Experts to investigate death of two pupils in Katlehong! The Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has appointed an independent team to establish the cause of death of two learners at a school in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni recently. The team is also expected to verify all available statements from the school and the parents of the learners. The pair were pupils at Khumalo Primary School in Katlehong. The deceased pupils, a 10-year-old in Grade 4 and seven-year-old in Grade 1, were siblings. It is alleged that on Tuesday (September 11), while in class, the Grade 4 pupil complained of experiencing stomach cramps and being nauseous. The pupil was taken to the local clinic. Moments after, the Grade 1 pupil also complained of similar symptoms as the older sibling, and was also rushed to the local clinic. Both pupils were unfortunately certified dead upon arrival at the clinic. “It is important to note that an educator sent by the school to inform the family about the condition of the two siblings,
witnessed a five-year-old at the family home complaining of similar symptoms. “As a result, the five-year-old sibling was also rushed to the clinic, subsequently transferred to Thelle Mogoerane Hospital for urgent medical attention. He is in a critical but stable condition. The police are investigating this tragic incident,” said Lesufi. Lesufi sent his condolences to the family of the deceased pupils. The department’s psychosocial unit has been dispatched to the school to provide counselling and pastoral care to the family of the deceased, as well as the school community. “On behalf of the entire education fraternity in Gauteng, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased learners and wish them peace and comfort during this difficult time. “We hope that the family will find comfort in the knowledge that we too share their loss. No words are enough to express our sorrow at the loss of a child,” said Lesufi.

Klebsiella outbreak claims six babies in Vosloorus! A bacteria outbreak known as Klebsiella pneumonia, has recently claimed the lives of six babies, according to the Gauteng Health Department. Klebsiella infection is a common neonatal infection that affects babies in low and middle income countries like South Africa. It is known to cause different types of healthcareassociated infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, wound or surgical site infections. Briefing the media on Sundayb(September 16), Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa said the outbreak at Thelle Mogoerane hospital in Vosloorus was found to be drug resistant. According to an interim report by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), it was found that due to overcrowding, infection measures were compromised. “Due to overcrowding infection control measures were compromised. Extreme overcrowding which creates conditions for the infection to take place and spread. The issue of overcrowding is of particular concern because all neonatal wards in the province were found to be overcrowded – on average 132% bed utilisation. In this hospital the NICD found that there were

90 neonates in a 61 bed capacity unit. The obvious is that we cannot turn any patient away because of overcrowding,” said the Minister. To combat the issue of overcrowding, the provincial department announced that it mobilised the Nelson Mandela Children’s hospital (NMCH) and Charlotte Maxeke hospital (CMH). “The only way to relieve overcrowding is to use other available facilities especially the low risk ones, in this case the Nelson Mandela Children’s hospital and Charlotte Maxeke hospital. “We are all aware that as the NMCH has recently opened and are progressively admitting new patients but still has unused space. This is the space that we are planning to use to decant neonates from Thelle Mogoerane,” said Motsoaledi. The Minister said the Gauteng Province needs at least six more hospitals to decrease overcrowding at facilities. “In addition, we are concerned about the design of the neonatal, antenatal, postnatal, labour ward and theatre. The passage from these wards to theatre passes through the neonatal ward adding to the risk and this is an undesirable situation,” he said. The transfer of patients and their mothers to NMCH

and CMH will give the provincial department an opportunity to scrub down and decontaminate the environment and address the structural issues without any disturbance. “The already established Gauteng neonatal clinical governance team will plan the decanting. This team will also assess the risk and benefits for every step to be taken for each baby. This is because it may be risky to transport sick neonates from one place to another but is may be equally risky to leave these babies in a vulnerable environment,” said the Minister. The NICD and National Health Laboratory Service will be on hand to give support during the transfer process.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi has appealed to all public transport operators to convert their radius-based permits to route-based operating licences. The conversion process is a legislative requirement regulated by Section 47(2) of the National Land Transport Act and Sections 7 and 14 of Regulation 1208. “The old permits must be converted to operating licences. It must be noted that operating licences will only be issued to operators who were previously issued with permits to operate within the public transport sector. This process is not applicable to new operating licence applications,” he said. The appeal forms part of a response to issues raised in the 2016 report by the Ad-hoc Committee of Inquiry into Taxi Permits and Operating Licences in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, which highlighted, the following matters linked to taxi conflicts: • Taxi violence between associations or owners fighting for commuter routes; • Illegal taxi operations; • Illegal acquisition of permits and licences; • Unregistered associations and • Unaudited taxi routes. Through this conversion process, the department is empowered to verify and audit various routes by associations. This ensures operators and associations conduct operations on allocated and registered routes in accordance with conditions stipulated on operating licences.

Held under the theme “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Treasure, The Year of O.R. Tambo”, the carnival is an important vehicle which takes forward the provincial government’s commitment towards nation building and social cohesion, Premier of Gauteng David Makhura, who led the celebrations had nothing but encouraging words about this annual festivity. The premier said the province wants to grow the carnival to the size of the Rio carnival. Also, he said he will consult the Gauteng Education department on adding Swahili in the school curriculum. “Next year we want to attract over 50 000 participants. We want to make sure that schools in the province also become part of the carnival because when young people are involved the celebration will continue for coming generations,” said premier Makhura. The carnival also created economic opportunities in both tourism and entrepreneurship. This year’s carnival created more than 3500 work opportunities and benefited 270 000 entrepreneurs who were providing services to the carnival. Nomlinganiselo Primary School from Cross Road in Cape Town wins the Danone Nations Cup SA National Final.
They will represent South Africa at the finals in Spain next year. Over 1500 primary schools were represented. The games were played at Dobsonville Stadium, Soweto, on Saturday, September 15. The tournament is organized in close relationship with the SASFA (South African School Football Association). All schools from the 9 provinces in South Africa register and participate in matches on a Regional. The top teams from each Region then competes in a Provincial DNC Final and the winning team from each Province competes for the title of the National Champions.
