Government continues to recognize this important milestone and prepares for it well in advance. The Department of Social development, through the National Association of Child Care Workers (NACCW) developed the Isibindi Model in 2011. This model provided the sector with an opportunity to develop large work force of community based Child Youth Community Workers (CYCW’s) with aim to provide services children in line with provision of the Children Act, pertaining to pre-

vention, early intervention and child protection. The Isibindi model was developed to meet the need of orphaned and vulnerable children in the comfort of their communities and homes. The CYCW’s are recruited from the communities in which they work and they work closely with community members in identifying beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries amongst others includes orphans, vulnerable youth and children due to parents being affected or infected with HIV/aids, unemployment, substance abuse and fostered children and youth. This model assist beneficiaries to access a number of service, this includes assistance with applying for identity documents, birth certificates, social grant, referrals

to health services and social workers, when and if the need arise. The Child Youth Care Workers develop relationship with the beneficiaries and their families, so as to support and empower them. This includes ensuring that these children and youth attend school and other educational programmes regularly, assist with home works supervision, early childhood

development and stimulation. The support from this model bears fruits that are evident in this year’s Gauteng Matric results. For the year 2017, there were 436 beneficiary candidates in Gauteng, 170 female and 170 male. This number has increased compared to last year, which was 311, meaning that 112 more youth who benefitted from Isibindi sat for matric examinations. Of this number 78% passed. Through this project some beneficiaries have gone training to become Child Youth Care Workers and are helping others and are also selfreliant. This is indeed an indication that with the right support, it does not matter who you are and where you are from, you can make it.

business opportunities in the townships and inspire investment confidence. A first for the province and South Africa as a whole, the main objective of the awards is to reward entrepreneurial talent in township settlements. Besides building confidence in kasi entrepreneurs, the overall impact that the

G

auteng MEC for Agricultural, Economic and Rural Development Lebogang Maile led the official launch at the popular Soweto Outdoor Adventures, at the Power Park (location of the two famous towers) on Wednesday, January 31. The first winner of the Entrepreneur Award and owner of the kasi tourism destination, Kgomotso Pooe welcomed the all those who attended the launch. Delivering the keynote address, MEC Lebogang Maile first commended the work the GEP board has done in restoring governance in the entity. “In the recent years, the GEP was one of the most criticized public agencies in Gauteng. Wherever we went, we always received complaints. Since then, there has been fewer complaints from people. We have told the GEP to inform applicant when they don’t have money instead of ignoring them.” Maile said that poverty is a major challenge facing people living in townships. He said the programme by the Gauteng government to deal with this is called ‘Transformation, Modernization and Re industrialisation’ which has a ten-point plan that includes the revitalization of the township economy in it’s pillars. “As Gauteng, we want to take the lead in Africa’s industrial revolution. We must re-industrialize our economy and radical social transformation. Also, this means transforming and modernizing the State.” As part of advancing radical economic transformation, Gauteng said it must pursue it’s township economy revitalization plan. “Over 70% of our people in this province reside in the townships. On a daily basis, people use taxis and other modes of transport to look for work in the suburbs. Remember that townships were a deliberately planned system from the apartheid regime to create a ‘labour reserves’ made just for sleeping. Today, our

awards in changing the negative perceptions about township-based businesses are gaining visibility. The awards are aimed at providing a platform for township-based entrepreneurs and SMMEs to reach their full potential and be active players in the mainstream of our economy.

people still live there in overwhelming majority, why is it that more economic activity take place there?” Maile said that Taverns, taxis and tuck-shops are the three main businesses that are firmly established in townships. MEC Maile referred to these as the triple ‘T industry’. “Our people never got to into bigger and wider business sectors. And every year, this industry (and the township economy overall) records over R100 billion, figures produced by the World Bank.” “Our people still love to consume and not produce. Although there has been some change, people have a perception that the Government will give people money to start their businesses. Some think that ‘Township Revitalization’ is a new version of RDP. That is a wrong idea, and that’s why we need to change that view about government programmes being charity event where people line-up to get money,” said the MEC. Maile said Government deliberately set aside 30% of its budget on township economy. In the current financial year alone, the Gauteng Government has spent over R7 billion in procuring its goods and services are from township enterprises. But Maile said that most of that spending on township businesses is short lived. “It’s big numbers. But when our people receive contract/tenders to work with Government entities, they go back to the big and established companies to get their supplies.” He emphasized that these awards and the prize money (valued to be over R6 million) must go a long way in ensuring that the value chain of the beneficiaries stay in and amongst township businesses. He also highlighted

the fact that government will do its bid in finding the unused factories and assets that are needed to begin industrial activity in these areas. “Like in the area between Alexandra and Sandton, there are a number of abandoned factories that have been made informal settlements. Places like these can be refurbished and be used for manufacturing goods near the townships,” said Lebogang Maile. Delivering the purpose of the launch and the entire programme of the Township Entrepreneurship Awards, the acting CEO of the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP) Leah Manenzhe, stressed the need for more applicants as the current number is less than what was received in the previous years. “So far, about 125 applicants have been received since the initial launch in November last year. The target of the applicants this year is 500. and that’s why we are relaunching TEA 2018 and extending the closing date to 28 February 2018.” said Leah Manenzhe, the acting CEO of the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP). She highlighted that these awards have opened doors for many of their beneficiaries over the past two years. “We have visited the first and the second year winners and did some sort of survey, as we wanted to understand if there is any impact in this programme. We’re proud to report that most of them have extended their businesses, creating more jobs and started penetrating markets they were not exposed to before.” The GEP will continue to encourage applications and give forms to all who wish to apply. Besides the strict judging process that each application has to go through, the acting CEO announced that ‘Mystery Shoppers ’ will visit each applicant’s business and buy its respective goods and services. “The process will be done before adjudication takes place. This is to make sure we see that whatever they put in to their submissions is really what they do,” said Manenzhe.

- Reality TV series (expected to run for 5-6 weeks) begins after nomination announcement. - Award ceremony and gala event will be in August.

Gauteng MEC for Agricultural, Economic and Rural Development Lebogang Maile

The big winner at last year’s awards ceremony, Ama XRays owner and managing director Aphiwe Madikizela said the business has seen great growth since she won. “Starting the business was a bit difficult, but winning the awards has actually helped out a lot.” Aphiwe announced that she is currently opening another venture. She has been invited to be part of developing a medical centre. A multimillion Rand company has called her in assistance with establishing mobile clinics, including calls from other doctors to expand her business.

How to Enter:

On top of it all, the connections have grown and people who seek advice on how she won have come from all directions. She has her own website and billboard, thing she said she could not afford. “I’m no longer dreaming of having my own franchise, I’m living it. Don’t listen to what people say, just do your business and apply.” The Mbizana village-born girl has thanked the awards, government and sponsors in receiving these accolades that have made her become what she is today. Overall, Ama X-Rays won R800 000 in prize money and sponsor gifts.

Entry is open to individual(s) and cooperative business within Gauteng’s townships and meet the entry criteria. Entry process is as follows: - Completion and submission of application form with all supporting documents on or before the closing date Entry forms are available for collection at Gauteg Entreprise Propeller (GEP) offices and business hubs across all five regions. EVALUATING THE THING CALLED LOVE Let us look at what is not love: • Love is not dishonest as it cannot be built on the structures & foundations of deceit and lies • Love is not unsupportive; it is always looking for the opportunity to support, protect, care, spoil and most of all love. • Love does not wait, it will not wait for you to be either better, be in a good mood, be perfect, be skinnier, smarter or get a better job. Love does not wait. • Love doesn’t keep files and records of the wrongs, its interest is on what good will be done now. • Love doesn’t care about any-ones height, body size, family back ground, skin color hence one once said love is blind. Love is love. • Love doesn’t humiliate, destroy, hurt and disappear. • Love cannot be found where it was lost. All of the above are mentioned simply because there are elements that are associated with love yet they are not. What you should know about love (my perspective): •Love is not a concept rather it is an action meaning it goes beyond thinking or imagination. •Love expect you to love yourself before it can reflect to others •If you don’t know how to find love within you, you will never find it outside you •Love is evidenced meaning it does not take instead it gives meaning: with love, you get what you put in not vice

versa. •Love does doesn’t harm and humiliate anyone. •Love requires nurturing and attendance and the daily practice of care * Love is open, honest, transparent and communicative, as love doesn’t restrain. If you want to sustain your relationship and show someone you love them, avoid the following: • Don't play the blame game • Avoid past life shaming •Don't throw spider webs • Don't worry about proving that you're right • Don’t lie •Don’t always put your needs first and neglect your partners needs •Don’t expect your partner to play the role of your parents ( he/she is not) •Don’t compare your current partner to your past partners. It's not fair to you or to them. •When you are asked to assist with cleaning a room; don’t automatically move in. Love does not revolve on one person in order to sideline the other it is not unequal. Each person should be valued equally meaning their desires, their dreams, their feelings and thoughts are equally heard.

SASCOC names Mzansi team for Commonwealth Games!

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has named the team that will represent the country at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia. “Team South Africa athletes will do battle across 16 codes, including para-sports athletics, lawn bowls, swimming, table tennis and powerlifting,” it said on Tuesday.

South African athletes will participate in sporting codes such as athletics, badminton, bowls, boxing and cycling (mountain bike, road and track), among others. SASCOC said the men’s Sevens Rugby Team will only be announced at the end of February. Aquatics is the biggest code in terms of numbers with 28 (23 swimmers, three divers and two para-swimmers) while athletics and cycling both feature 18 athletes. Aquatics boasts the two youngest members of the team in the form of Luan Grobbelaar and Dune Coetzee (15), while lawn bowler Princess Schreuder, at 67, is the oldest com-

petitor in the team.

Two codes, para-table tennis and parapowerlifting, both have just one competitor. The team includes Rio Olympics gold medallist track athlete, Caster Semenya, silver medallist swimmers Cameron van der Burgh and Chad le Clos, field athletes Luvo Manyonga and Sunette Viljoen and bronze medallists Henri Schoeman (triathlon) and the men’s rugby Sevens side. Para-sport also features Rio Paralympics double gold medallist Charl du Toit and gold medallists, Hilton Langenhoven, Reinhardt Hamman and Dyan Buis. “As SASCOC, we’re very excited to deliver this team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Many hours of planning have gone into preparing this team,” said SASCOC President Gideon Sam of the games that will take place between 4 and 15 April. Sam said the games are a platform to see where the country’s sportsmen and women, both established and developing, are on the world stage.

“You will see that it’s a great blend of experience and raw talent and I’m confident we’ll once again be right up there with the cream of Commonwealth countries and looking to improve on our seventh place on the medals table in Glasgow four years ago. SASCOC acting Chief Executive Officer Patience Shikwambana wished the team well.

SASCOC is the country’s multi-coded sporting body responsible for the preparation, presentation and performance of teams to all multi-coded events, namely the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Games, All Africa Games, Olympic Youth Games, Commonwealth Youth Games and Zone VI Games.

“I believe we have a strong team with established stars, who have excelled exceptionally in the international arena, including at renowned events such as the Olympics, Paralympics and previous Commonwealth Games as well.” Since being admitted back into the global sports family, South Africa has sent teams to six Commonwealth Games around the globe, starting with the 1994 Games in Victoria, British Colombia. At the last Games in Glasgow four years ago, Team South Africa ended seventh with a total medal count of 40 (13 gold, 10 silver and 17 bronze).

Local and Olympic track champion, Caster Semenya, is one of the athletes to be part of Team SA in the upcoming Commonweath Games
