VOL. 7 ISSUE #10 - 07-14 AUGUST 2020

The Department of Basic Education has announced that the 2020 Grade 12s will concurrently write mid-year and final examinations between 5 November and 15 December. The reconfiguration of the examination calendar comes after the school year was severely disrupted by the lengthy closure of schools since March due to the COVID-19 enforced lockdown. “Following the closure of schools on 18 March 2020, and the national lockdown to curb the spread of Coronavirus, a decision was taken by the Minister of Basic Education to administer the May/June 2020 examination concurrently with the October/ November 2020 examination,” the department said in a statement. The late commencement of the final Grade 12 examinations will allow schools and learners adequate time to cover the curriculum and also to ensure that ample time is allocated for revision of the syllabus.

October/November 2020 National Senior Certificate examination will be allowed to write this examination.

More than 1.1 million candidates are expected to sit for the 2020 combined matric exam and every registered candidate will receive an admission letter by the end of September 2020, listing the subjects for which they have registered and the examination centre where they will write. Registration for this examination has closed and no late registrations will be entertained, said the department.

nation will be released to candidates on 23 February 2021. “Candidates need to be assured that the late release of the results will not jeopardise their admission to higher education institutions,” said the department. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has wished Grade 12 learners well, saying they will be fully supported in their preparations leading to the exams, despite the challenges that this year has presented.

Candidates, who were originally scheduled to write the 2020 October/November examination, will write two papers each in Business Studies and Accounting, whereas those who would have written the 2020 May/June examination will write one paper each in Business Studies and Accounting.

Basic Education emphasised to candidates that this is a combined examination, which implies that all candidates that were scheduled to write the Senior Certificate examination in May/June 2020 and have already registered, will be allowed to write this examination.

The Life Orientation (LO) Common Assessment Task will be written on Monday, 19 October 2020. The practical examinations in Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT) will be written prior to the official commencement of the examination on Wednesday, 21 and Thursday, 22 October 2020, respectively.

not doing enough to ensure that there is domestic peace and stability in our societies, especially during this unprecedented lockdown.

The situation in the country has deteriorated to such levels where it has become possible to say that our bodies as women have become crime scenes that are waiting to happen at any given moment and time.

Existing social initiatives created by government to address the scourge of gender based violence in our societies remain impotent since they no longer receive government funding and attention.

It’s a frightening realisation to arrive at. This reality, compounded by the government’s failure to alleviate this real plight against women, is leading to a silent festering of a mental health crisis among the women of South Africa. Conditions such as paranoia and anxiety have seen an increase in recent weeks, as many women have been forced to put up with their abusers in adherence to the Covid-19 lockdown regulations. With nowhere to go, most women find themselves having to stay with their abusers, on whom most depend on for shelter, food and other forms of sustenance. The government of South Africa is seriously failing its women. They have failed to provide alternative safe housing for women who find themselves in potentially violent situations during the lockdown. The government is

At face level, the government seems apathetic to the ongoing femicide in South Africa. Due to the month of August being women’s month, we shall see another wave of preformative gestures of ally-ship and solidarity with women who have been victims of GBV. Men will buy flowers, organise dinners and so on; they will sing praises to women this month, but will not take time to gather amongst themselves to interrogate their behaviours and to seek healing in order to facilitate a peaceful coexistence with women. Why are men afraid of digging deep inside themselves to confront the real reasons why they speak through violence? Instead of reaching into their pockets to impress women, men need to appeal to their own consciences in order to properly shape their approach towards women. This will go a long way in showing respect and bringing comfort to women, much more

WINNER OF 2019 GAUTENG SPORTS AWARDS: Community Media of The Year

Gauteng ready for the resumption of Football!

The Gauteng City Region welcomes the decision to bring football to its shores for the conclusion of the 2019/20 season.

Over the next 6 weeks the golden province will be the exclusive home of football, where over 100 matches will be played for the crowning of champions of the Premier league, 1st division and the Nedbank Cup. The province has been adjudged ready and best suited to host 32 teams under a strict bio-safe bubble. The decision is a demonstration of its (province’s) ability to attract and successfully host quality global and local events. “We are delighted that we could be hosts of the resumption of the beautiful game. We want to thank the PSL for trusting us in helping them successfully concluding their programme after 4 months of inaction. Looking back to the work and investment we did for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we are excited to see our efforts carrying us through to be the preferred host of this major event albeit, unfortunately without fans in attendance,” says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe. Throughout its municipalities, Gauteng has world class infrastructure that meets any required safety measures and standards. The games will be held across 16 venues in the cit-

ies of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. The safety measures include a “bio-bubble” method where players and officials of each team will be together in a strictly controlled environment.

“Our collaborative infrastructure includes sporting facilities for training and matches, hotels and hospitality services, health and wellness, transport and communications networks which all provide an environment that meets the requirements to ensure that the remainder of football can be completed in line with Covid-19 health and safety protocols”, emphasised MEC Hlophe. As the city region of South Africa, it is our vision to position Gauteng as a globally competitive destination of choice. This principle also accompanies us during this difficult period of a COVID-19 global pandemic. Moments like these call upon to be the best of ourselves, and we remain committed to welcoming you with the same warmth and hospitality we have always had, whilst adhering to all the necessary health and safety protocols. “Since its birth, football has been integral to our communities. It is more than a game, more than a sport; it is a way of life that we all embrace. In this time of uncertainty, may we be reminded of this defining role that every goal and every tackle gives hope to those directly or indirectly affected by the virus,

and continue to work together to combat the pandemic with the same spirit shown by the community of fans and supporters of the beautiful-game.” Highlighted Gauteng Tourism Authority CEO Yoland Kona

MEC pays tribute to fans “Our decision to support the PSL conclude its season was made mainly with the fans in mind, to allow them to see all the action to the finish. We want football to be set-

tled on the field and not in the boardrooms knowing the bragging rights and joy it brings to the supporters. “As Gauteng we are certain that amid the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 restrictions and protocols, working together with our partners we’ll deliver a successful programme of football to conclude the 2019/20 season. In good times, and even more so in these challenging times, Gauteng is behind you all the way.” said Hlophe.

President congratulates Brad Binder on MotoGP victory! President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated motorcycle racer Brad Binder on flying the South African flag high with his first win in the MotoGP premier class today, Sunday August 9.

Brad Binder (25), who previously raced in the Moto2 class, recorded the first MotoGP premier class win by a South African after starting in seventh place on the grid at the Masaryk circuit in the Czech Republic. He is now 4th in MotoGP rankings worldwide. President Ramaphosa said: “Brad Binder made all South Africans proud today with his historic victory. We share in his elation and look forward to his long and successful career at the top of his sport. “Coming as it did on Women’s Day,

which brings us together as a nation, Brad’s victory in the Czech Grand Prix provides us with inspiration, hope and pride and lifts our spirits at a time we need this.”

Binder hails from Potchefstroom in Tlokwe Local Municipality. In November last year, he was confirmed as a factory KTM rider in MotoGP class for the 2020 season, replacing Johann Zarco who had abandoned his factory ride earlier in the year. Sharing his excitement for his recent win, Binder said it was a Dream come true. “Hard to believe we are Grand Prix winnersTrophy Thank you to everyone for all the support over the years. The feeling to stand on top of the podium in MotoGP was unreal,” he said on his social media account.
