My Story, ibali Lam launch storytelling seminars!

“My Story, Ibali lam”, a movement working towards the cause of drug abuse and bringing back lost hope in our youth through seminars. The movement is founded by Teboho Maduna And Sipho Motaung. Speaking to Mapepeza on their upcoming launch taking place on Saturday, October 3 in Balfour, the co-founders highlighted on what guests can expect.

"Our aim to to bring back lost hope amongst young people in our communities. We want to connect them with people who have made it in life, so they too can lead a better life," said Maduna. Peer pressure and social ills continue to be a contributing factor to young people resorting to bad behavior, drug abuse and much more. So the pair have been using storytelling seminars to inspire these victims to consider their own paths and focus on their progress. Ibali Lam is a Xhosa word meaning My Story. "We invited these big people to share their stories so others can be inspired and see how they can make it as well. In the event, we will also find ways to connect speakers to guests and share their experiences with each other," said Sipho Motaung. Established in November last year, the movement began with ten members. My Story, Ibali Lam has representatives across Mpumalanga in areas like Secunda and Standerton just to name a few. Going forward, the movement looks to reach people all over the country. Inspired by his transformation from a destructive life and defeat, Maduna says the movement inspires him to help others who have been where he was. "I was always getting into trouble as a young man. My family did not help me but told me I will never become successful in life. Eventually I found someone outside my family who showed me that my life was not going in the right direction. They also shared stories of different people in my community that did not make it due to bad decisions and influences," said Teboho. Maduna eventually finished school and managed to get employment. He says taking the right decisions is based on what one wants in life.

Motaung lost his parents at a very tender age and grief followed him throughout his young life. Despite not having family to rely on, Sipho says the movement became his way of motivating others in a similar situation. He says the way he grew up cannot define his future but he can use his story to inspire society. "I lost my parents at a very young age. My brother and grandmother who were my only family also passed away. So I was left to figure this life thing on my own. I also became a victim to addiction, suicide and other bad habits, almost lost my life on many occasions. I was in a rehabilitation and society gave me a second chance."

R.I.P GEORGE BIZOS

Motaung says many people can relate to his story and live despite the painful experiences. He says he healed when he realized that he cannot change the circumstances in his life as they are results. "The drive that shows people that there is still life and all you have to do is make it nice for yourself," he said. Guests will be treated to a variety of speakers, ranging from local experts to famous faces. On The program: Mr Xolani Khumalo (Mr South Africa top 30 semifinalist), Ms Patricia Magagula (Education Specialist) GS College, Mr Peter Mokgashane (Ward 3 Councilor Balfour), Mrs Khethiwe Moeketsi (Speaker of the Council), Mrs Nthabiseng Letsoko (HOD) I.M Manchu High School.

MASKANDI IS HIS TRUE CALLING!

The event will be held at the Balfour Lodge Guesthouse and starts at 6pm. For more information, visit the My Story, Ibali Lam on Facebook or call Motaung Lawrence on 0724712812.

Stinky recycling factory closed!

The City of Ekurhuleni has obtained a court order to stop operations at the Steel Sheeting Company based in Wadeville following complaints of unbearable smell caused by illegal recycling and manufacturing operations. The company buys plastic recyclables from waste collectors and wash them to recycle into plastic granules that can be used to manufacture plastic furniture. On Friday September 8, officials from the City’s Environment Resources Department together with Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) and South African Revenue Services (SARS – Customs) raided the facility. The law enforcement officers further discovered inhumane working conditions, illegal recycling operations and almost 50 illegal immigrants conducting unlicensed plastic recycling operations. The court order also provided for removal of machinery used to operate the facility. As such, EMPD had to remove all machinery in the premises. Meanwhile SARS officials found the company not to be registered with SARS. According to the City’s Divisional Head for Legislative Compliance in the Department of Environment Resources Thabang Mokoena, following the closure of the company other relevant City departments will move in to complete other necessary enquiries and operations to fully effect the court order. Furthermore, the City’s environmental inspectors will continue to inspect and monitor other companies with similar operations that are non-compliant with the City’s waste management by-laws and air quality legislation.

EMPD officer shot dead at his home!

The City of Ekurhuleni MMC for Community Safety, Councilor Frans Mmoko has expressed his sadness after Constable Mopi Johannes Matloa, a member of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD) was shot dead by unknown suspects. “The MMC and the entire EMPD are deeply hurt, moreover when a Police Officer whose entire devotion was to serve and to protect the lives in the communities that he served,” said the department in a statement. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, September 20. It is said, suspects entered his home in Ivory Park, and hailed bullets at him. Constable Matloa was rushed to Zamukuhle Hospital, where he passed on. Constable MP Matloa first started as the Traffic Warden in 2008 and went on to train as the Metro Police Officer, in 2009. He was then deployed at the Edenvale Precinct until 2015 when he joined the Northern Region FRU (First Respond Team). “We urge community members who might have information which can assist the law enforcement in tracking down these senseless thugs, to come forward,” said the department. EMPD shall not rest until the killers

of Constable Matloa are brought to book, neither shall we surrender to criminality. The MMC’s wishes to convey sincere condolences to the Matloa family, the Chief of Police and EMPD Management, all the officers and immediate colleagues, for this loss. A case of murder was opened at Ivory Park SAPS and appeals are made to anyone with information to report it to their nearest station.

Advocate George Bizos laid to rest! Renowned human rights lawyer and activist, Advocate George Bizos, was laid to rest at Westpark Cemetery in Randburg, Johannesburg on Thursday, September 17.

The Bizos family held a private family service ahead of the Special Official Funeral Category 1, as declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa upon his passing.

SEPTEMBER 2020

The legal eagle’s presence was seen at some of the most famous trials in South African history. He was on the defence team at the Rivonia Trial and over the course of his life, defended many leaders of the liberation struggle like Trevor Huddleston, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu.

Bizos, 92, passed away on 9 September 2020.

Bizos also played a role in the hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Delivering the eulogy, President Ramaphosa described Bizos as a man led by his moral convictions and one who was on the right side of history.

He was trusted by the families of Ahmed Timol, Steve Biko, Neil Aggett, the Cradock Four and victims of the apartheid death squads to represent them.

A titan of the legal fraternity, Bizos was destined to become a human rights lawyer, having fled from his war-torn home country of Greece at the age of 13 with his father.

With South Africa on the cusp of democracy, Bizos led the team for the Constitutional Assembly to certify the first Constitution of democratic South Africa, and assisted in its drafting.

“He was destined to be an activist lawyer and a champion of the liberation struggle. We read in his memoirs how it astounded him that he, a refugee from Europe, had more rights in South Africa than the black majority.

“His contribution has been extraordinary and his influence on our constitutional democracy is without any doubt felt not only by those in the legal profession, but by many South Africans,” said President Ramaphosa.

“He could not and would not accept how he, a white immigrant, could be well-fed, clothed and educated, while the native people of the country lived in squalor and deprivation,” said the President.

A servant to many after retirement

Punished for his involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle, the apartheid government denied Bizos citizenship for over three decades. “Bizos’s biography relates that the refusal letter told him he was “not fit and proper” to become a South African citizen. But the rabble-rouser that he was, he would not go quietly. He never laid claim to having been a firebrand revolutionary,” said the President.

Dedicated to a life of giving, Bizos the philanthropist was a founding member of the Saheti School and established a scholarship and bursary fund for needy students. As a founding member of Lawyers for Human Rights and the Legal Resources Centre, Bizos also mentored young lawyers. “For him, the struggle did not end with democracy, but would only end when every man, woman and child enjoyed the rights promised to them. We owe it to his legacy to finish the business he started,” said the President.

Govt honors victims of gender-based violence “Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) is an ill that has left no society or sector untouched.”

These were the words echoed by Ekurhuleni MMC Councilor Masele Madihlaba during the Crime Victim’s Rights Week candle light ceremonial service in honour of victims of genderbased violence and femicide. The MMC was speaking on behalf of Gauteng Social Development MEC, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi at Protea Hotel by Marriot – OR Tambo International Airport, in Kempton Park on Wednesday, September 16. Clr Madihlaba said during the past two years and during 2020 in particular, the country was shocked at the gruesome and horrific killings of women and children by men who were supposed to protect, care and support them. “Their ordeals still resonate through the minds of South Africans and the families of the women and children are still trying to come to terms to deal with the barbaric way in which their loved ones were murdered. It is chilling account of what our society has become.” “This situation has been getting worse for years. In 2018, women in the country started the #TotalShutDown Movement and marched during August of that year. This March was against the unprecedented and high levels of GenderBased Violence and Femicide that was plaguing the country. Consequently, and in response to the mounting calls from women’s groups, civil society organisations and the public regarding the abuse of women and children, the President convened the First Presidential Summit on GBVF on 01 and 02 November 2018.” “This Summit identified key interventions to address, not only gender- based violence and femicide, but the wider challenges women and children face in regards to safety and security, poverty and access to economic opportunities and the contestation of their rights

in a society where patriarchy and chauvinism are still widely prevalent. The Presidential Summit yielded a positive outcome that resulted in the drafting and approval of the National Strategic Plan on Gender Based Violence and Femicide 2020-2030,” said the MMC. He further said “As we meet today, we are here to remind ourselves of the difficult work ahead, and to honour the victims of GBVF. The main purpose of the candlelight memorial ceremony is to commemorate the memories of the victims of Gender-based Violence and Femicide who lost their lives in the hands of intimate partners and strangers.”

Police to take stronger action on GBVF cases Among the participants who paid their homage was the SAPS Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lt. General Elias Mawela, Adv Tshilidzi Ramathikithi from the Department of Justice, the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Mr Mbuyiselo Botha, members of the civil society and faith based organisations. Speaking to families of victims of GBVF, Lt. General Mawela said he stands before them with a heavy heart, not only to offer a message of support but to reaffirm their commitment as the South African Police Service (SAPS) that they will continue to take a stand against gender-based violence and femicide. “We will continue to prioritize the investigations on all crimes committed against women and children and other vulnerable groups,” said Lt. General Mawela. “To the best of our ability, we want to ensure that justice is served,” he added. The pain suffered by the victims is immeasurable. These helpless, vulnerable and unfortunate victims need all the support they can get from the state and civil society.

Chapter 9 institutions back Caster Semenya! The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) are planning to embark on advocacy to fight against the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) discriminatory regulations. This comes after Caster Mokgadi Semenya (pictured) recently lost her appeal to Switzerland’s Federal Supreme Court against the restriction of testosterone levels in female runners. “The matter for these two Chapter Nine Institutions is more than an individual fight for Semenya but one that affects black women in developing countries. “It is about restoring her human dignity and rights to participate and have income from sport, as well as the rights of other athletes, who have also been dis-

criminated and prejudiced by the new IAAF discriminatory regulations that came to effect in 2019,” read a statement released on Thursday, September 17. After Semenya lost her appeal, the two institutions met on Tuesday (September 15) to chart the way forward on the issue of gross human rights violations. “The two institutions’ opposition is based on their strong conviction that the effects and impact of this new regulation will be detrimental; and therefore amount to a severe violation of the rights of female athletes like Caster Semenya, whose body produces what is considered by the IAAF ‘unnaturally high’ levels of testosterone,” the statement said. “Both institutions believe the outcome at Switzerland’s Fed-

eral Supreme Court amounts to a severe violation of the right to bodily integrity, human dignity and privacy of athletes like Caster Semenya, whose bodies, through no fault of their own, produce what is considered high levels of testosterone,” the statement said.

The CGE and SAHRC said they are determined to mount a global and national advocacy and support for women athletes like Caster Semenya and anyone else who falls foul of the new IAAF’s regulation. This petition will not be limited to South Africa and Africa but also the United Nations.
