Farewell to the People’s Mayor!
On January 15, family members, colleagues and guests bid farewell to the late Busisiwe Modisakeng. She was the executive mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality in Gauteng. A highly decorated member of government, she spent most of her life until her final hours, in service to her community.
Mayor Modisakeng’s funeral service was held in Ratanda, attended by a select group of guests as the COVID-19 regulations had to be observed. The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) held a virtual live stream for the mourners who could not attend. The civic funeral service was led by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko. The procession began with the singing of the national anthem. This was followed by an opening prayer by Emfuleni Mayor, Reverend Gift Moerane. “May the family find comfort, may her husband find healing. We pray for the mourners to go well as they take her to you,” he said.
Modisakeng. He said the loss was so unexpected time. “A loss to the Modisakeng family is also a great loss to the Heidelberg community,” he said.
Fellow colleague and speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Ntombi Mekgwe, spoke highly of the ‘younger sister’. She spoke of meeting her back in 1983 during the height of the unrest when police were looking for her. She met Busi when she enrolled in Ratanda Secondary School where they grew together.
The life and times of Busisiwe Joyce Modisakeng Early Life: Busisiwe Joyce Modisakeng was on 30 October 1966 born in Greylingstad,
where she did her primary schooling at Mlamlankunzi Combined School from Grade 1 to Grade 7. In early 80’s the family moved to Heidelberg, Ratanda, where she pursued her Secondary Schooling at Ratanda Secondary School. This is was the beginning of an anti-apartheid activist, under the banner of Cosas, where she served as the secretary of Heidelberg Cosas Branch. She is married to Johannes Modisakeng. Together with her husband, she built a family while pursuing the fight in the height of the struggle. At a young age, she was in the forefront of the liberation of people and mobilized many to join the political movement.

Rest in Peace Busi Modisakeng!
Academic background: Busi Modisakeng holds various academic qualifications in Local Government. She holds a Local Government Tertiary Education qualification from Technicon SA. She further studied Leadership/Public and Project Management in various institutions in the country and abroad. She has achieved certificate in Local Government and also on Executive Leadership.
In a video circulating on social media suggesting that there is a Chinese manufactured medicine which when taken can cause sudden death is fake news. The truth is that the product is actually a COVID-19 test kit made in South Korea.
Later, she was deployed as the Executive Mayor until her passing. She also served as the member of the ANC Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee and SALGA until her passing. She remains adedicated and active member of both ANC and its Women’s League. Career profile: At the dawn of democracy, she was elected as Executive Mayor of Council in Lesedi Local municipality, from 1995 until 2011. During this era of governance she became the youngest Executive Mayor in Gauteng, she led the Executive Sector of Lesedi Local Municipality for more than a decade with agility and dignity. Throughout her leadership in Lesedi Local Municipality, she displayed great astuteness, integrity and discipline. She has served on various positions, both in politics and other sectors like the Heidelberg Hospital, COSATU, Gauteng Tourism Agency and many others. Modisakeng joined Sedibeng District Municipality as the Speaker of Council in 2011 until 2015.
BUST: ‘COVID-19 medication’ is actually a test kit!
She sadly passed away on January 7 after COVID-19 related illness. She is survived by her husband, four children and a multitude of relatives including the Sedibeng community as a whole. Busisiwe Modsakeng was laid to rest at the Ekuthuleni Cemetery in Ratanda under strict lockdown regulations that limited mourners to a small number. However, she will always be revered by many as the ‘Mayor of the People’ as most of her present life was spent in service to the communities she served.
A woman speaking in the video claims that they have been told that the product is medication for treatment of COVID-19 related symptoms. She also claims that the product is available is pharmacies nationwide and was deliberately made to kill people. That couldn't be further from the truth. Another myth discovered by the Mapepeza Anti Fake News War Room (MAFNWR) is that in other parts of the world, the same image of the COVID-19 test kit is actually being passed off as a vaccine or cure. FACTS: The image is widely circulating in social media and is being used to spread fake news. The product is a TEST KIT AND NOT MEDICATION NOR IS IT A VACCINE. The image can be traced to a Facebook user who posted the photo of the sachets and a box labeled SGTI-flex COVID-19 lgM/lgG. The user claimed that this is the cure for the Coronavirus and US scientists have created the 'miracle that is able to cure patients in 3 hours after injection.' MAFNWR RESULT: Fake News (Viral image is a testing kit made in South Korea)
She will be remembered as a valiant public servant, community leader, a pioneering and passionate politician. The record remains as she is the longest serving mayor in South Africa since the dawn of Democracy.

CITY JOB SCAM ALERT!

"The City reiterates that its job application process is not conducted through social media platforms or social media messaging. Our positions are strictly advertised on our website: www.ekurhuleni.gov.za/vacancies where both permanent, temporal and fixed term vacancies are advertised," said Ekurhuleni in a statement. Editorial Letter - Our people need to ‘Divorce’ the government!
Welcome to 2021. A new year does give almost everyone a break from all that happened. Most certainly, many people are looking forward to a better year than the last. But I beg to differ. This new year will bring in the changes that 2020 has introduced to us. Firstly, its the Coronavirus pandemic. It is here to stay, for a long time. Unless something drastic is done by governments worldwide to end this disease, then we will be reliving the blues of the past year for a long time. Another is the economic disruptions happening around us. Before COVID-19, we had the 4th Industrial Revolution being implemented. People waited to see new devices and technology that make life easier. We eagerly anticipated smart tools, advanced robots and some innovative ideas of some kind. However, that was short lived. As South Africans were easing up to this new concept, the disruption happened. The pandemic has shifted the attention of the world to now focus on medical and scientific solutions like vaccines, ventilators and tracing software. Where does that leave the 4IR (as its affectionately known)? Now we have to think as a citizenry and as a community: what do we want most from this new era of disruption and uncertainty? I cannot speak for the masses. On my end, I would be content with a world where everyone is involved in society’s development. When a crisis like the pandemic occurs, our people go hard at work to create
and solve the persistent problems head-on. Like Martin Luther King Jr, I too have a dream. I envision a South Africa where people rely on their communities to move forward, not the government. I dream of a country that loves its people, puts their needs first, gives preference to the disadvantaged over the privileged. I see our children no longer embracing their racial and cultural differences - ending centuries of oppression and discrimination.
flect and realize what they want in their own lives. Conflict between the two parties has led to this decision. Likewise, we need to ‘file for separation’ from our loving government. As citizens, we need to step back and reflect on our relationship with the State. Do we still need municipal, provincial and national entities to provide us with basic needs so we can live? Do we want to witness the rot and slow death of political parties who have elected representatives with interests that benefit them and a select few? Do we still want to complain, protest, riot and burn things just to get the political leaders to respond? Not in this new era. Not in this new age.
What can we take from 2020 as a lesson learned and never to be repeated again? Do not depend on your government. This a bold answer. How can that So, what’s my solution: be possible in a world the 4th Industrial Revowhere we are ruled lution. The law of nature by politicians, business tycoons and the super-rich elite? Its not possible when one still needs the government to assist them when they are unemployed, hungry and hopeless. It is true that our government has done a lot during the pandemic in terms of helping its citizens. We’ve benefited from relief funds, PPE donations, food parcels and getting treatment for those infected. Is that enough though? Many South Africans don’t think so. Dur-

ing this second wave of COVID-19 transmissions grew during the festive season, the government did not seek to assist people as they once did months ago when the pandemic started. Despite the second wave taking more lives and infecting thousands more than the first variant we have seen little to no response to help our economy. This means people must look out for themselves and see how they will survive. That is the reasoning behind my point to divorce the government. Like marriage, sometimes loving couples need time apart to re-
are simple: Adapt or die! As we witness the slowing economy, loss of jobs and small businesses we must not look back and lament. We should focus ahead at what is here before us. If our people can open their minds and embrace these new technological advances, then we can see a better tomorrow than think of how bad yesterday was. This can unlock new opportunities for people of all ages. It can give us solutions to life’s most challenging situations. This can save our country from being run to the ground.

The law of nature are simple: Adapt or die! depend on it. This opens up new avenues of possibilities. Remember people made governments, not the other way around. Realize your own power and embrace the 4IR. -STEPHEN SEAKWE

Spend and borrow wisely this 2021
The National Credit Regulator (NCR) has urged the public to start 2021 on a good note by spending and borrowing wisely.
The NCR said some consumers are currently finding it difficult to meet their financial obligations such as school fees, school uniform, transport and rent, among others. “It is that time of the year where some consumers will feel like ‘Januworry’ is three months long because of their financial situation. Consumers who might need to borrow money or take out credit should read and understand their credit agreements before signing,” said the regulator’s Acting Manager: Education and Communication Anne-Carien Du Plooy.
credit providers before they give the consumer the money they are applying for. The fee also has several names such as attorney’s fees, release fee and admin fee. In terms of the National Credit Act, it is illegal for a credit provider to make a consumer pay them upfront. “Consumers should not confuse this with a deposit as there is no deposit when taking out a loan. The bottom line though, is that the prospective credit provider will never give you the money you are requesting, they will suck you dry before they vanish. Know your rights and spare your money,” she said. The NCR also shared the following tips with consumers: • Understand the cost of credit. The cost of credit includes interest rate, once off initiation fees, monthly service fees, credit life insurance, etc. To understand the cost of credit, consumers should be given a pre-agreement statement and quotation (valid for 5 business days). These should disclose all the costs involved in the credit agreement that a consumer signs.
According to the National Credit Act (NCA), consumers have a right to receive information in a plain and understandable language and to receive reasons from the credit provider if their application is declined. “If all registered credit providers decline your application, it means that there is a problem prompting a need to work on your finances as your financial woes might be bigger than you realise. This is the time to seek assistance by negotiating for lower instalments with your current credit providers, paying off and closing some accounts.” Du Plooy urged consumers to avoid unregistered credit providers such as “mashonisas/ skoppers” to access credit as they will pay dearly at the end. “Unregistered credit providers charge exorbitant interest rates and use other illegal collection mechanisms such as card retention. Consumers should not agree to pay an ‘upfront fee’,” warned Du Plooy. The fee is charged mostly by unregistered or even fake
• Do not sign a blank credit agreement/document - read the content first, understand and ask relevant questions. You may sign ONLY when satisfied. • Be honest and truthful when applying. If you are dishonest about your monthly expenses when applying, you will lose the protection offered in the National Credit Act if you need to raise reckless lending in the future. • Borrow only when it is absolutely necessary to do so and avoid using credit for consumables such as groceries. • Understand credit life insurance - Familiarise yourself with the terms and conditions of the credit life insurance to avoid surprises when you mostly need the cover from the insurance. Credit life insurance can be a life saver when you cannot repay the debt for reasons such as loss of income, unemployment, disability etc. • Pay your debts on time Paying late or not paying the full instalment will adversely/ negatively affect your credit report and in turn your ability to qualify for credit in the

RIP Lawrence Ndzondo! Bonga aims to be Number One!
The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, has paid tribute to boxing pioneer, Lawrence “Slow Poison” Ndzondo.
Ndzondo, from East London, was one of the first boxers from the then Cape Province to turn professional in 1965. He passed away in the early hours of Wednesday in East London. “He was a model professional, a disciplinarian, a family man and an absolute credit to the boxing fraternity. He will always be remembered as one of the pioneers of professional boxing in our country during the dark days of apartheid, giving our people hope and inspiration,” the Minister said.
SAFA appoints new CEO!
Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe has been appointed SAFA CEO on a five-year contract.
The announcement was made by SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan who described Advocate Motlanthe as a football administrator through and through. He said Advocate Motlanthe was a unanimous choice after he had gone through a rigorous interviewing process conducted by three independent professionals. ‘’He was highly recommended by the interviewing panel and the NEC endorsed his candidature unanimously. He has been appointed on a 5-year tenure and commences with immediate effect,’’ said Dr Jordaan. The SAFA President said Advocate Motlanthe’s mandate include consolidating SAFA’s healthy financial position, making sure that all our national teams feature in major tournaments in line with Vision 2022 and that they should compete with the best going forward.
ing to take SAFA to the next level,” said Dr Jordaan.
In his acceptance statement, Advocate Motlanthe thanked the NEC under the leadership of Dr Jordaan for showing confidence in him and that he will make it a point that he does not betray their trust in him. ‘’I will deliver on my mandate and that include seeing all of our national teams doing well in their respective competitions. I have also commenced the financial turnaround strategy but I want to make this sustainable not a once off thing,’’ he said adding that soon the Association will be announcing various partnerships. He said one vital element in having a stable administration was working closely and well with the media and that his door remains open to all football stakeholders.

virus pandemic still in full swing across many countries. The Japanese government has promised the show will go on.
Coming all the from Ratanda, he spoke to Mapepeza on his career ambitions.
Modelling is another good thing Bonga is good at. He started a few months ago.
“I started my athletics career in 2006. I aspired to become like the local legend, Kgotso Mokoena. At the age of 15, that is when I realized I’m good at running,” said Makgalemele. His current running distances are 100 and 200 meters. These are the sprint races that people like Wayde van Niekerk and Usain Bolt (fastest man on Earth) compete in.
The 18 year old also wants to become a community builder through his sporting career. “In the future, I want to see myself living my dream and I want to see myself helping other people around South Africa. I wanna ‘clean the streets’,” said Makgalemele.
Speaking about the present times we all live in, the pandemic closing most major sporting activities, Bonga expressed hope that in the near future things will change for the better. “The Olympics are still going to be on. I say this because I have faith, and I’m always positive,” he said. Recently, the Tokyo Olympics games were said to be still in preparation despite the Corona-

In terms of his resources, Calvin has only got little support. He appeals to provide him with means to make his dream of becoming a professional athlete a reality. He has opened up a crowdfunding website (www.makeachamp. com/Bonga) where he accepts any form of donation. Bonga is also in need of sponsors for his equipment and a club. “I can push myself through anything. I would like people to see me as a hard worker,” he said.
