‘STINKY WATER’ SAFE!

RAND WATER ASSURES THAT ODOUR IN WATER DOES NOT PRESENT A HEALTH RISK!

Ekurhuleni customers may have experienced an odour in water this is due to the presence of geosmin that mostly occurs in the hot summer season. There is no need to be alarmed, the water is safe to drink. Geosmin is a naturally occurring compound produced by bacteria in soil and algae found in surface water. The intensity of these odours is related to the increased densities of blue-green algae that normally occurs on the water surface of the Vaal Dam during summer. Rand Water has put in place an extensive water quality-monitoring programme. Should there be an indication of an increase in frequency and duration of geosmin occurrences, precautionary measures will be taken to remedy the problem in due course. Geosmin is harmless, however those with a very sensitive receptor for the flavour of geosmin can offset the taste by: · Using a carbon filter. While the filter may not eliminate the taste entirely, using one can improve the flavour and make water more palatable. · Investing in a reverse-osmosis water-treatment system. This is the most effective system for removing all geosmin from the water. · Cooling your water in the fridge. The colder water will make your taste buds less receptive to the flavour of geosmin (this is a temporary solution). Customers are also advised to visit www.reservior.co.za for more information on the water quality in their area.

BANANA: THE MOST DANGEROUS

SUSPECT IN EKURHULENI IS BEHIND BARS!

Mapepeza Reporter

The suspect lived in Dindela section, Vosloorus and goes by the nickname “Banana”, was in 1994 convicted in a heist case and sentenced to 65 years in jail. He started serving his sentence in 1996. After serving 17, he was released on parole and had to be on an ankle monitor for twelve months. Banana was later wanted for murder, attempted murder, hijacking and breaching of his parole conditions. The murder case allegedly was where a Gauteng Community Safety Board member was killed. He also had escaped on two occasions from the Boksburg Correctional Services facility. Last Thursday afternoon, 11 January

the EMPD Public Order Policing and EMPD K9 Unit members surprised the wanted “Banana” at his girlfriend’s home at Vosloorus Extension 25 in Mailula Park. Since November last year, the Gauteng Community Safety and Katlehong SAPS Commanders joined the EMPD POPs Unit in tracking down “Banana”.

The two EMPD Specialised Services Unit members left no stone unturned in gathering information about the wanted man. Their patience bore fruit and their gallant efforts paid off when information led them to the suspect’s girlfriend place where the arrest was effected. The 43 year old (Real name Sonnyboy Zondo) was expected to appear in court this week.

TWO MOST WANTED MEN FROM DUDUZA ARRESTED!

In the wee hours of Wednesday (10 Jan) morning just after midnight, task teams from EMPD, JMPD, Gauteng Community Safety and SAPS managed to apprehend two suspects who have been on the run for some time. The duo from Duduza is suspected of having been responsible for various serious crimes committed in and around Gauteng. It took the joint efforts from the EMPD Public Order Policing Unit, JMPD K9 Unit, Special Law

Enforcement Unit (SLEU) from Gauteng Community Safety and SAPS Provincial Crime Intelligence (PCI) to apprehend the pair. A painstakingly clever, precise planning and information gathering paid off when the EMPD provided back-up to the task teams when pouncing on the wanted suspects at the time when they least expected it. The first suspect (29) was arrested at the Masechaba Section in Duduza. He was found in pos-

session of a Renault vehicle – fitted with false number plates (according to police, it was hijacked in October 2016 in Kempton Park). Police also found handgun was confiscated when it was found that his licence had expired. His suspected partner-incrime, aged 39, was nabbed shortly after the first arrest also on Dlamini Street. He was found in possession of a stolen VW sedan with a Tembisa case number. When police checked, the regis-

tration on the VW came out as a green VW Polo Vivo. The VW sedan’s chassis number was tempered with. His firearm was also confiscated because of an expired license. Both recovered vehicles were taken to SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni and the two seized firearms were booked in at Duduza police station. The suspects were detained at Duduza police station, where they were expected to appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court.

“Individual taxpayers who filed personal income tax returns last year and were assessed to owe SARS money are reminded that they have until 31 January 2018 to make payment,” the revenue collection service said on Thursday. According to acting SARS spokesperson Sicelo Mkosi, there are about 236 500 individual taxpayers countrywide who fall in this category.

Taxpayers who fail to comply will face various enforcement actions, such as penalties, interests, as well as criminal processes if they do not pay by the deadline. SARS makes allowance for taxpayers in financial difficulty to approach it in order to defer payment or pay in instalments within qualifying criteria. Taxpayers who fall in this category are urged to make arrangements before the 31 January 2018 deadline. “Taxpayers who wish to make such a payment arrangement must go to their nearest SARS branch or call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277,” Mkosi added. Taxpayers are reminded that three main payment channels are available, namely on eFiling, at a bank or via EFT. SARS branches do not accept payments, whether cash or cheque. SARS also thanked taxpayers who filed income tax returns during the 2017 tax season and who already paid their tax debt. ANGRY MOB TURN AGAINST EKURHULENI FIREFIGHTERS! Recently, the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters once again found themselves having to flee away from angry mob in Katlehong. The crews who were escorted by the police on their way to the incident but couldn`t arrive to the intended destination as they were blasted with rocks by an angry community of Moleleki section and subsequently, both vehicles had to turn away for safety. Fortunately, no glasses on the fire engine were struck during the attack except that all five crew members were left with huge astonishment and fear. As per information on scene, communities from both Moleleki section and Sun-

rise view, had a dispute on service delivery matters. Concrete lamp poles were crashed down, wooden electrical power lines burnt down and power cable cut off and to worst case scenario, centralized water taps were broken down and thousands of litres of scares resource (WATER) wasted. Of a great concern, is the caller who couldn`t get the service as requested and expected from Emergency Services due to rioting mob. The firefighters from Zonkizizwe Fire station responded out to a structural fire call in their newly replaced fire engine in Sunrise section after the previous one was torched in the same area back in September 2016.

EFF LESEDI CONDEMNS THE CLOSURE OF RATANDA SWIMMING POOL!

@mapepeza #mapepeza @mapepeza_media twitter only

ONE GATVOL BLACK MAMA

Letter to Education MEC Panyza Lesufi Sourced via the Mapepeza Whatsapp group from Diyo, By Nthabiseng Koza Wa Mahlobogoane Dear Panyaza What would happen if you spent all of 2018 fixing township schools, insisting on your teachers to get free extra training, resourcing our schools, and growing balls to tackle SADTU? I will tell you. Our children wont have to be woken up in the wee hours of the morning, to be squashed like sardines in mini buses, travel long distances, sometimes not even making it to the school cos the taxi breaks down or is involved in an smash. They wont arrive at school tired and miserable, struggling to soak in what is being taught, wont have to face racism and be exposed to your grandstanding masqueraded as sorting the white establishment out. I will tell you this as well. Parents would save at least R1000.00 per month from transport costs etc. The township economy would be boosted by the children's people selling snacks and lunches at the schools. Our children would not be pawns in your games. I am gatvol with you and political party's nonsense. The Economic Freedom Fighters in the Lesedi sub-region have strongly condemned the closure of Ratanda swimming pool by the Lesedi Local Municipality. “Ratanda is losing young minds in attempts to cool off from this brazing sun. This can be prevented if lesedi local municipality can open its swimming pool gates and maintain the facility properly,” said the party’s coordinator Isaac Khithika. During the festive season, the kids in the township resorted to finding river streams and water holes as alternatives to the closure of the local pool. Just before the schools reopening, community has seen kids drowning in one of the popular swimming holes. “It's a sad reality that the condi-

tions of the swimming pool continue deteriorate under the watch You signed these crap laws and constitution and made of the municipality. If we fold our sure whites retain everything, you carried over you 80s arms and not raise such issues we slogan of education on the back burner and the lie of would not be doing justice to the community,” continued Khithika.

freedom first into democracy. We havent forgotten that you guys didnt struggle to be poor and are thus you all do what benefits you and yours. An illiterate citizenry serves your goals very well akere. Now you act as though whites sprung racism on you while you were sleeping. In 2018 education for a black child is still a privilege. When do you stop and put Black people first? When do you stop looking for publicity and get actual work done? Why must our children beg for assimilation? Why cant you bring the same resources that white schools have into townships? We can build a holiday resort for one family, why cant we have the best money can offer for our children? I am so sick of you. You are so strange, fighting with whites to take your children into their spaces, turn them into amoebas who don't know who they are instead of learning from them how they took their non language and made it as best as it is. You are about black this, black that but fight for future generations to be taught by our oppressors in their foreign languages and thus perpetuating this destruction of black identity. Instead of fixing our township schools and our children can be taught in their mother tongue, you are helping keep white culture as the best. You are a hot mess and uyanyanyisa.

One gatvol Mama

Khithika concuded by saying that if the municipality continues to fail the community by failing to open that swimming pool for our children cool off from this brazing sun, they (EFF) alongside the community will open that swimming pool themselves.” The present conditions of the pool are dire. The water has been drained and stored since the December holiday season. Lesedi Local Municipality officials responsible for the pool could not be reached for comments.

DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Michael Luther King Jr.

Born: 15 January 1929 Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. Died: 4April 1968 (aged 39)Tennessee, U.S. Nationality: African American Spouse: Coretta Scott (married 1953) Children: Yolanda Denise King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, Bernice Albertine King Parents” Martin Luther King Sr., Alberta Williams King Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the most important voice of the American civil rights movement, which worked for equal rights for all. He was famous worldwide for using nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice, and he never got tired of trying to end segregation laws (laws that prevented blacks from entering certain places, such as restaurants, hotels, and public schools). He also did all he could to make people realize that “all men are created equal.” Because of his great work, in 1964 King received the Nobel Peace Prize - the youngest person ever to receive this high honor. King was also a Baptist minister. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, when he was just 39 years old. His birthday is now observed as a national holiday on the third Monday in January.

has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor.

Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family. King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama.

Martin Luther King Jr. took on many roles: he was a pastor, activist, humanitarian, and most widely known for his work and improvements to the African-American Martin Luther King Jr. was born in a religious family in the black Civil Rights Movement. american communities in Atlanta, Georgia State. Background History

He believed in achieving advancements in civil rights through nonviolent ways, organizing many protests and marches, leading to his Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He made efforts in the areas of poverty and the Vietnam War, before his assassination in 1968. Sources: Wikipedia, Collegenanniesandtutors.com, Nobel Prize website

His Place in Society and His Impact on Our Lives Today King Jr.’s biggest role in society has been his efforts is advancing the civil rights movement. He brought attention to a big issue that was incredibly controversial and sensitive during his time. His take on nonviolence was imperative in his efforts, and assisted in gaining traction for the movement. His protests and marches were not always successful, however, his presence in our society made a huge impact on the African-American Civil Rights Movement both before and after his assassination. On top of his Nobel Peace Prize, Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and is one of only four non-presidents to be honored with a memorial, which is located in Washington D.C.’s National Park. Read through his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and ask yourself what you can take from it.

“I Have A Dream...” Speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I

say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning,

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.

“My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”

With this faith we will be able to transform

And if America is to be a great nation this

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

AUTISM - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

COMPILATION SOURCED BY THABISO MQOCWA

AUTISM is a term used to describe different types of developmental disabilities, called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurobiological disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction as well as restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. ASD is referred to as a spectrum , since the symptoms of autism vary from mild to severe for each individual

Signs of non-verbal communication difficulties

• Avoids eye contact • Uses facial expressions that don't match what he or she is saying • Doesn’t pick up on other people’s facial expressions, tone of voice, and gestures • Makes very few gestures (such as pointing). May come across as cold or “robot-like.” • Reacts unusually to sights, smells, textures, and sounds. May be especially sensitive to loud noises. However, every child on the autism spectrum has problems, at least to some degree, in the • Follows a rigid routine (e.g., insists on taking a specific route to school) • Has difficulty adapting to any changes in schedule or environment (e.g., throws a tantrum following three areas: if the furniture is rearranged or bedtime is at a different time than usual) • Communicating verbally and non-verbally • Unusual attachments to toys or strange objects such as keys, light switches, or rubber bands. • Relating to others and the world around them Obsessively lines things up or arranges them in a certain order. • Thinking and behaving flexibly • Preoccupation with a narrow topic of interest, often involving numbers or symbols (e.g., There are different opinions among doctors, parents, and experts about what causes autism memorizing and reciting facts about maps, train schedules, or sports statistics) • Spends long periods watching moving objects such as a ceiling fan, or focusing on one speand how best to treat it. cifi c part of an object such as the wheels of a toy car There is one fact, however, that everyone agrees on: early and intensive intervention helps. • Repeats the same actions or movements over and over again, such as flapping hands, rockFor children at risk and children who show early signs, it can make all the difference. ing, or twirling (known as self-stimulatory behavior, or “stimming”). Some researchers and clinicians believe that these behaviors may soothe children with autism more than stimulate them. • Children with autism spectrum disorder are often restricted, inflexible, and even obsessive in their behaviors, activities, and interests.

MZANSI’S HOPE FOR AUTISM AWARENESS!

Signs and symptoms in older children As children get older, the red flags for autism become more diverse. There are many warning signs and symptoms, but they typically revolve around impaired social skills, speech and language difficulties, non-verbal communication difficulties, and inflexible behavior. The possible signs of social difficulties can include: • Appears disinterested or unaware of other people or what’s going on around them • Doesn’t know how to connect with others, play, or make friends • Prefers not to be touched, held, or cuddled • Doesn’t play "pretend" games, engage in group games, imitate others, or use toys in creative ways • Has trouble understanding feelings or talking about them • Doesn’t seem to hear when others talk to him or her •Doesn't share interests or achievements with others (drawings, toys) Basic social interaction can be difficult for children with autism spectrum disorder. Many kids on the autism spectrum seem to prefer to live in their own world, aloof and detached from others..

Signs of speech and language difficulties

• Speaks in an abnormal tone of voice, or with an odd rhythm or pitch (e.g. ends every sentence as if asking a question) • Repeats the same words or phrases over and over, often without communicative intent • Responds to a question by repeating it, rather than answering it • Uses language incorrectly (grammatical errors, wrong words) or refers to him or herself in the third person e.g. the child says: ‘Thabo wants to play!’ instead of ‘I want to play!’ • Has difficulty communicating needs or desires • Doesn’t understand simple directions, statements, or questions • Takes what is said too literally (misses undertones of humor, irony, and sarcasm) Children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty with speech and language. Often, they start talking late.

The Ernie Els Centre for Autism believes that every child with autism can learn and deserves access to effective education. They recognize that every parent and family member plays an important role in helping their child reach his or her fullest potential. The Els For Autism Charitable Foundation was established in 2009, with the primary aim of establishing the Ernie Els Centre for Autism, South Africa. The Ernie Els Centre for Autism provides lower-resourced families of children on the autism spectrum with FREE comprehensive training on how to use best practices in education and autism treatment to teach their child via a multi-faceted e-learning solution. Co-founder of the foundation Mrs Liezl Els (pictured), the pointed out how the foundation aims to work with the Department of Education in raising awareness on the autism spectrum. “We are not trying to core our kids but we are trying to create a better world for them and to help the world understand Autism better”, Els indicated. The Ernie Els Centre for Autism focuses on empowering caregivers or parents. They offer fully sponsored training opportunities to caregivers, to tap into the primary resource in the child’s life. Parents come into the centre once to twice per month with the aim of learning core skills to help guide them in their teaching of their child. SA OPEN GOLF TROPHY RETURNS TO ENGLAND!

uNgqongqoshe wezemidlalo uhalalisela ama-Proteas!

MAPEPEZA REPORTER

Englishman Chris Paisley clinched the covered trophy and R15 million ( prize money when he won the 107th BMW South African Open, proudly hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni. MMC for Sport, Recreation Arts & Culture Cllr Dorah Mlambo congratulated the winner, alongside the City manager and the championship’s organizers. The tournament showcased the country’s finest home-grown talent as they compete against the European Tour in-

ternational greats to keep the trophy on home soil, but unfortunately it returned to the UK after it was also won by Graeme Storm last year. Like last year the tournament was a crowd puller, particularly in the final day on Sunday, January 14 where the Paisley kept his lead against South Africa’s hope for glory, Branden Grace. The South African lost his grip after leading on the first day. The flagship event on the Sunshine Tour calendar took place at the 80 year

old Glendower Golf Club at Edenvale from Thursday, 11 to 14 January 2018. DID YOU KNOW: The South African Open was inaugurated in 1903 after a series of exhibition matches had been played in the decade prior to it. It is the second-oldest national open golf championship in the world, with the Open Championship being the oldest. It is also the second-oldest sporting competition in South Africa after the Currie Cup, which was first played for in 1893.

AUTISM AWARENESS NEEDED IN COMMUNITIES! By Thabiso Mqocwa

Mrs Liezl Els, wife of legend and hostplayer at the BMW SA Open Ernie Els has thanked the support people showed during the tournament with the BlueOut for Autism campaign. Golfers, spectators and some sponsors wore blue on Friday, January 12 to spread the message of awareness about autism. “We are hoping to take away the superstition because people know so little about Autism. Socialising and communicating more about it will improve the community understanding that autism is a spectrum disorder,” said Liezl during an interview with Mapepeza. Autism is a mental condition in which a person is unable to communicate or

form relationships with others. It is common in children and young adults. Els for Autism South Africa is a foundation that has been running for seven years in South Africa and their centre are based in Braamfontien (Jhb) and Cape Town. Since its inception, they treat about 115 families between countrywide.

Liezl pointed out how the foundation aims to work with the Department of Education in raising awareness on the autism spectrum. “We are not trying to core our kids but we are trying to create a better world for them and to help the world understand Autism better,” Els indicated.

City of Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC), Cllr Dorah Mlambo said the Metro has been working with Ernie Els Foundation for three years. She also said the government can start a compaign communities to inform people about Autism. “We should take the compaign to the fathers, because they are the ones who tend to leave or reject their children when they found out that the child has a disability. We can find a small group of people (affected people, parents, experts etc.) that we can teach, so they teach others on how they can communicate or understand people with living with autism,” said Cllr Mlambo.
