Woman wanted for PPE tender scam! The police together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) also known as the Hawks, are seeking assistance from the public to locate a woman who is alleged to have scammed unsuspecting investors for an accumulative amount of approximately R10 million. “It is alleged that from June 2019 to date, Swereen Govender lured family and friends to invest in her Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) business by promising lucrative dividends in return,” explains Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo. Further investigation revealed that Govender initially payed minimum dividends to investors and then completely stopped at a later stage and she has allegedly been lying to her investors that she cannot be contacted as she has been placed in a witness protection programme. Multiple cases have been registered at various police stations in Gauteng which are now referred to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Germiston for further investigation.

some of which cases she is alleged to have taken people’s life savings, retirement and disability pensions, etc., leaving these people absolutely destitute. “People are reminded to be extremely cautious when investing money with individuals. If an offer appears too good to be true, know that it probably is and one should rather consider investing one’s capital with long standing reputable investment companies,,” said Brigadier Naidoo. A warrant has been issued for Ms Govender’s arrest and the investigation team circulated her on the local and international movement control system. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Ms Govender or anyone who has fallen prey to Govender’s scam are urged to come forward with information to the investigating officer, Captain John Marepa on 082 822 6351. “Anyone caught harbouring Ms Swereen Govender must know that this is a criminal offence,” warned Brigadier Naidoo.

The investigation team further revealed that Govender created fraudulent suppliers’ certificates from different government departments for PPE’s. Govender has since been positively linked and is wanted on these fraud cases in Gauteng

Honourary luncheon held for MoTsha!

Local youth empowerment non-profit organization, MoTsha Teens has done a lot of good work in the community of Lesedi Local Municipality.

The organization has organized several charity drives across the communities of Lesedi. They have distributed food parcels to deserving families.

In recognition of their sterling dedication to helping young people and disadvantaged families throughout the pandemic, a lunch was organized on Friday, December 17 at Nandos Heidelberg Mall.

Another major event this year for MoTsha was the Men Who Lead Men, a father-andson event where young men can freely engage their older counterparts.

The event was organized and sponsored by Thabo Twala and Heidelberg Nandos. During his remarks, Mr Twala outlined the importance of such gatherings like roundtable discussions where like-minded people discuss and find common ground and exchange ideas.

Their programmes have also seen some growth with more young people enrolling than before. Lesedi Local Municipality executive mayor

Mluleki Nkosi was the guest of honor.

Established in 2016, the non-profit organization has been empowering youngsters from diverse backgrounds to step up as leaders in their schools, communities, and society. “The idea behind this Lunch was to thank Motsha for its contribution towards building and equal and inclusive community that will have young people who are informed and to build them towards being active participants in the economy,” said Pretty Kekana from MoTsha.

Co-founder of MoTsha, Karabo Monaheng expressed deep gratitude for the honor and said that they sacrificed a lot over the years to take the organization to where it is today. “We’ve got an extremely strong support structure. The reason we are growing in leaps and bounds is because people can see we are growing and how passionate we are; how much we want to make it work and grow,” she said. Monaheng also said that the team has persevered through the years, despite the pandemic and lockdowns.

Joburg mayor selects her mayoral committee!

City of Johannesburg’s new administration has selected its multi-party leadership when ten Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) were sworn-in on Tuesday, December 14.

The City’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, said the residents expect all the 18 political parties represented in Council to work together. Speaking at the Connie Bapela Council Chambers in Braamfontein, the mayor told the newly inaugurated MMCs that they have been forced to work together by residents despite their different political ideologies. “From our development planning frameworks, to how we distribute resources, to our understanding and support of poor communities, and our enabling nature towards the business community. We have a mammoth task of understanding and managing the diversity that is before us. Each and every one of our 6 million residents is counting on that,” said Dr Phalatse. The Mayor and the MMCs come from the Democratic Alliance, Action SA, Inkatha Freedom Party, Freedom Front Plus and African Christian Democratic Party. The entire Joburg Council has 18 political parties represented in total. She said all the MMCs have to put their political parties’ hats aside and become members of one team. “We are all from different political formations yet members of the same team. We have a natural inclination towards competition, with the view to eclipse or overshadow our colleague, but in this setting the co-de-

pendencies between the different portfolios require of us to desire for our colleague to excel, in order for us to excel,” she said.

She urged all the incoming MMCs to collaborate, support each other and engage in the healthy competition for the benefit of service delivery. “It is in this spirit that I would like to see the MMCs move into this term of office because a house divided amongst itself cannot stand. And as we stand here today, we’re all members of one team regardless of which political parties we come from. We are going to be building one city of Johannesburg and one legacy that we all together can hand over to the next generation,” she said. The Chief Whip of Council, Cllr Tyrell Meyers, said the City is in great hands under

the leadership of Mayor Phalatse and the MMCs. Spend your hard-earned money wisely during festive season!

For most South Africans, the month of December is dedicated to a time to take advantage of end-year deals ahead of the much anticipated period.

your bonus/13th cheque to pay off your debts, credit cards or home loan. This will not only reduce the interest payable but also the term of the debt.

It has been observed that during the festive hype, most consumers tend to buy in the name of huge discounts and sales as per the retailer’s adverts.

Always read and understand the Terms and Conditions (the agreement of sale/service agreement) of items sold in store and online before signing Demand contracts/agreements that are simple, easily understood and in plain language. It is important to remember that, when you make a purchase or order a service online, you are entering into a legal agreement. Know and understand your rights and responsibilities before you make any purchase.

The Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs (GOCA) has urged residents to exercise caution when spending their hard-earned cash. “Be careful and not be misled by marketing strategies as the hype creates unnecessary pressure on every household. Most consumers in South Africa are in huge debts and the festive season hype will lead to more people being over-indebted as they tend to shop for things that they do not need in the name of sales and discounts,” explains Milly Viljoen, Director: Consumer Education, Awareness and Stakeholder Relations at GOCA. The rising prices of fuel, food, transport and electricity is affecting many households and the situation is expected to worsen as we approach the end of the year. The pandemic has also affected finances of many households and businesses, with many people having lost their jobs and sources of income, or having been affected by salary cuts. Protect your consumer rights If you are not satisfied with products and services received, complain to the manager or person in control of the business where you purchased the goods and services. You can also contact the supplier or manufacturer of the goods and services. If the matter is not resolved, then consumers can lodge a complaint to the Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs (GOCA) on (011) 355 8006 or email consumer@gauteng.gov.za. Consumers can also visit our Head Office or one of our Regional Offices in Gauteng. Shopping and spending tips Plan your purchases in advance by drawing a ‘realistic’ budget Avoid spending your hardearned cash on things you don’t need. Prioritise your expenses; make a list of needs and wants. Focus on the essentials, needs, school uniform, schoolbooks, stationery and pay school fees for 2022 in advance. Before you do any grocery shopping, make a list and stick to it. Use

Check specifically the Repair, Replace and Refund (RRR) policy for defective and unsafe goods purchased online, as of that purchased in store – especially on sale items. A consumer has the right to return any goods without penalty and at the supplier’s risk and expense within six months of delivery if the goods fail to satisfy the quality provisions stipulated in the Consumer Protection Act. Check your bank statements regularly

Checking your statement regularly to help keep track of expenses and spending, as well as monitor for any fraudulent charges or mistakes. Avoid online shopping scams Only transact on secure websites: look for the lock image on the toolbar, valid certificates such as VeriSign and secure payment systems such as PayU, Ozow etc. Don’t do your shopping in coffee shops and malls with public WiFi. There’s a bigger chance that fraudsters may intercept your connection and get hold of your usernames and passwords.

you need. If you don’t have the extra money, you can’t spend it. Credit costs money (interest) and it encourages over-spending, can also lead to a ‘poor’ credit record. Build up your savings

Create an emergency fund for unforeseen circumstances. This fund will strengthen your financial security in the event of a job loss or any circumstance you might encounter. For more information, advice and consumer-related complaints, contact the Gauteng Office of Consumer Affairs on (011) 355 8006 or email: consumer@gauteng.gov.za.

Watch out for strange emails and links. Always be skeptical about offers that seem too good to be true. Certain online ads on social media sites might take you to a fake website that can infect your system with malware. Rule of thumb: rather type in the web address yourself. Also, never send emails that contain personal information such as your card number and expiry date or supply these details over the phone. Local teen activist organizes community support for pads! Owethu Moloi (17) the founder of Silondiwe Youth Empowerment Foundation hosted a fun walk for the youth of Jameson Park to raise funds for sanitary pads.

Owethu founded the foundation in 2019 to empower the youth of Lesedi and surrounding areas to be the best version of themselves through Christ. The walk started early morning at the Jameson Park sports ground, the youth walked for hope for 5km around Jameson Park. The walk was joined by a Comrades runner, Tshepo Mokhgosi

who participated in the Half-man/Halfmachine Callenge in September this year. Mokhgosi walked 1000km from the 1st to the 31st of September.

“The purpose of the walk is to raise funds to buy sanitary pads for girls who cannot afford them and to raise awareness around issues of Gender Based Violence against women and children. As the youth we cannot shy away from the issues that we face in our communities, but what we can do as young people is take steps that will change our communities for the better,” said Owethu

when interviewed by Mapepeza. After the walk, Sensei Leon Gagiano from Tenshkin Karate taught the young people how to defend themselves when faced with dangerous situations. The young women were excited to learn ways in which they can defend themselves when in danger. ‘When in danger do not freeze when you can defend yourself’, said Sensei Leon. Silondiwe Youth Empowerment Foundation looks forward to hosting more fun walks for the empowerment of the youth and community of Jameson Park and surrounding areas.

The year 2021 will go down as a period where the citizens of Lesedi Local Municipality have endured trials and tribulations. Unemployment, poverty, and inequality are characteristic of the daily experiences. Above all we had to toil and are languishing in losses attributed to the growing scourge of the Coronavirus Pandemic. We mourn prominent citizens, friends, relatives and loved ones. HIV/AIDS is not showing signs of relief. Lifestyle problems like diabetes, hypertension, among others keep on compounding our health conditions. During this period of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we would like to encourage people to avoid super-spreader events like large gatherings. Mask-wearing, sanitizing, social distance are going to be part of our lives for some time and people are encouraged to observe without hesitation. Over and above, we are pleading with everybody who falls within the regulated age group to take the jab and vaccinate. Taking a steam regularly as a non-pharmaceutical alternative has proven to be a positive exercise to quell the severity of this virus. As we value every life of out citizens, we advise for the strict adherence of these measures. Amid all these predicaments, the Government of the day Nationally, Provincially and Locally remains indebted to the citizens of our country. On behalf of Lesedi Local Municipality, we encourage our people to collaborate, cooperate and unite to confront the challenges before us. In the spirit of "Ubuntu", we encourage that all our people to be each other's "keeper". Crime, theft, fraud, scams, drugs, binge drinking, reckless driving, hijackings, domestic violence, gender-based violence are among many social ills facing our citizens. Law enforcement agencies will remain on the alert all the way. The Council would like to encourage citizens in their individual capacities and respective streets, blocks and wards to collectively forge efforts to quell the ills that society is languishing in. We encourage all the learners in all levels to be steadfast with their education and wish the class of 2021 success. Those whose performance is not desirable, are encouraged that they should not despair. There is always another chance. South Africans are a resilient community. Let us approach the New Year with a strong sense of Unity, Humanity and Cohesion. As we celebrate the festive season, we pray for Love, Peace and Happiness. We open our hearts and arms to all the visitors and relatives who will be visiting our Municipality.

Last year, the local marathon took place under unusual conditions due to the lockdown regulations preventing sporting events from being hosted. So, the KAC innovated and held a virtual run. “As we put plans in place to run this year, we continue to request the running community to adhere to government regulations and vaccinate. COVID-19 protocol will be observed on the day to ensure that we are running safely. We also request runners to wear bright and reflective clothing to increase visibility on the road,” explained Hloni Motloung of the KAC.

According to Motloung, the club approaches school principals every January to help in identifying learners who require school shoes. The donation is made to the schools through the principals who will ensure deserving learners benefit from this program. “School shoes are symbolic of pride and give confidence to young learners knowing that they can walk to school in comfort, as opposed to barefoot. We believe that a new pair of shoes should be tough enough to protect a young child’s feet whether it is on the playground, on the sports field or even walking home in the middle of winter,” he said. Readers and members of the public are called to participate by contributing, either by making a monetary donation or purchase a pair of school shoes to donate. Contributions begin from R100 sent via the club’s FNB account (No:62097536357).
