Operation O KAE MOLAO intensified in Ratanda - Several suspects nabbed! INCIDENTS OF ABUSE, RAPE AND ASSAULT OF OFFICERS ENCOUNTERED!
The Ratanda SAPS Station Crime Prevention Operations were taken into serious activeness as from Thursday night of December 12 non-stop until Saturday (December 14). “A total of eight suspects were arrested for various crimes committed and reported within Ratanda policing area. Station Operations conducted includes Detectives Tracing Of Wanted Suspects, Reliefs Sector Deployment, Station Crime Prevention Operations, CPFs involvement and follow-up on information received from community on illegal activities committed or being committed,” explained Captain Tshilate, police spokesperson. During the Safer Festive Season operation members received a complaint of domestic violence along Nkitsing Street in a hostel where a suspect locked and assaulting his two girlfriends in the room. On arrival of the Police and interviewing the suspect, he became so
aggressive and grabbed the throat of Constable Ephraim Ngwenya and forced him onto the ground. The Police colleagues have to force the suspect out of their colleague by pulling him up. The suspect was then arrested for Assault on Police Officer immediately. The two girlfriends of the suspect were informed and advised on applying for Protection Order to restrain the suspect from abusing them as well as to open the assault case against him but till to date, none of them take steps further against their boyfriend. Furthermore Police were busy patrolling along Khanyile Road, commonly known as Heidelberg Road in the middle of Ratanda Location on the early morning hours on Thursday. They spotted a car that was driving in a zig-zag on the road. Police signalled the driver to stop. Police detected that the driver was smelling liquor and he was drunk. They notified him of driving motor vehicle
drunk and they are arresting him. In a process of arresting the drunk driver, a passenger started swearing at the police. The passenger further alighted from the motor vehicle, started pushing Constable Tebogo Motaung, suspect grabbed the Police on the uniform, pulling him sideways obstructing him from arresting the drunk driver, the crew quickly intervene, overpowered the suspect and arrested him for Obstructing Police when executing their duties. In another separate and horrific incident, an 18 year old boy was arrested for rape of a five year old girl at Extension 26 Ratanda Location on Thursday (December 12) during the day. In this incident, it is alleged that a victim visited her mother's friend. She was left with the suspect in the house, when suspect took an advantage of vulnerability of the minor and rape her. The victim them told her mother about the ordeal. The mother and
the suspects mother took the child to Heidelberg Hospital for medical examination. Medical Practitioners confirmed the rape. The mother took her son to the Police Station and handed him to the police for detention for a rape. Other cases were suspects arrested includes Drunk and driving, Reckless and negligence driving, Drunkness in public, as well as Drinking in public. “The Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Makgora Paul Selota congratulated and appreciated great efforts in fighting crime through their determinations, courageousness and commitment with fear or favour. The Station Commander thanked the CPF and community for mutual working relationship towards safe and secure environment for the Ratanda community,” Captain Tshilate concludes. The arrested suspects have appeared in Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon.

New taxi rank open at the Heidelberg Mall
On Friday, November 22, the Heidelberg Mall has officially opened a newly developed taxi rank, servicing Heidelberg and surrounding communities. “Over the last five months, the Entrance 5 parking area has been transformed into a functional taxi rank with quality facilities for the Heidelberg and District Taxi Association and commuters. The project commenced in July 2019 and was completed in November 2019. The development included the new taxi rank, trader stalls, taxi association offices and ablution facilities,” said the mall’s Centre Manager, Lebo Legwale. The new rank serves as Heidelberg’s commuter hub and provides commuters with im-

proved access to Heidelberg Mall. Additionally, the Hawker facility provides an opportunity for local businesses and entrepreneurs to sell their products from established stands. The launch event included a ribbon cutting ceremony, a performance by Lesedi Show Choir and a live radio broadcast by local radio station Ekasi FM. Certified job documents now valid for 6 months
All government departments and its components have been directed to stop the practice of requiring certified copies of documents not older than three months to accompany applications for employment. Departments have been advised to at least accept certified copies of documents submitted with an application for employment that are up to six months old, in those cases where the document certified does not have an expiry date that falls within the six-month period, the Presidency said. This decision follows complaints raised with President Cyril Ramaphosa on social media and through other channels about the onerous requirements for compliance with public sector job applications. “It has come to the attention of the President and the Minister for the Public Service and Administration that departments have adopted a practice of requiring certified copies of documents not older than three months to accompany applications for employment,” the Presidency said. The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) has since issued a circular - Human Resource Planning and Employment Practices: Circular No 35 of 2019 - which makes it clear that the prescribed application for employment form (Z83) and the Public Service Regulations do not prescribe a three month timeframe for certification of documents that accompany applications.
GP Taxi violence commission open! The Commission of Inquiry into Taxi Violence in Gauteng is accepting any information that may be relevant to the matters it is tasked with looking into. “Any person or section of the public, including community structures, members of relevant communities and of the public, minibus taxi-type service associations, drivers, operators, conductors and rank marshals, who or which is in possession of information that may be relevant to the matters to be enquired into by the Commission and wishes to give evidence before the Commission is invited to contact the Secretary to arrange the date and time when you may testify before the commission," said Justice Jeremiah Shongwe, the chairperson of the commission. The commission was established to investigate the root causes of taxi violence in Gauteng. Shongwe said evidence related to the work of the commission can be submitted to the commission’s Secretary. The commission is based at 15 Jubilee Road, Parktown, Johannesburg.

The Terms of Reference include the following aspects: (a) The underlying reasons for the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities and instability within the minibus taxi-type service industry within the Gauteng Province; (b) The activities of operators, legal and illegal, as well as any other group or person that contributes to the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities and instability; (c) The provision of minibus taxi transport services authorised by
both interchange based and direct route-based permits and licences; (d) How the minibus taxi business model, including the formation and management of minibus taxi associations, contributes to the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities and instability; and (e) Any other matters that are ancillary or related to the matters set out in paragraphs (a) to (d). There are two commissioners who will be assisting the chairperson in the execution of the commission’s duties, namely Lungile Mabece, who is a Senior Attorney and Hlula Msimang, an executive operating in the law enforcement, security and intelligence sector. The commission also consists of a Secretary, Mamiki Selesho, a legal risk management and forensic accountancy specialist, who will be assisted by administrative staff. There are four evidence leaders in the legal department under the leadership of Nano Matlala (Senior Attorney), namely Advocate Hendrik Potgieter; Advocate Tiny Seboko; Advocate Richard Mkhabela
and Advocate Tebogo Mafafo. There are four investigators who will assist in consolidating statements when visiting witnesses. The Commission must make findings with reference to: (a) The number, nature, locality, and pattern of incidents of conflict, violence, fatalities and instability involving different sections of the public, both as victims and suspects, in Gauteng; (b) Indications whether the incidents are related to criminal activities or any other internal or external influences or factors which may be considered relevant; (c) The outcomes of any police investigation and prosecution of the incidents, including the number of successful prosecution of the perpetrators, and, (d) The perception of the different sections of the public in respect of the underlying reasons of the incidents of the recurring conflict, violence, fatalities, and instability and the effectiveness of policing thereof by the police service in the province.

Gauteng’s JVW crowned champs! Gauteng based JVW Football Club were crowned the 2019 champions of the Sasol League on 8 December. Goals by Gabriela Salgado and Nicole Irwin ensured that JVW Football Club clinch the trophy including a R200 000 cheque. Nine teams – all provincial champions from the Sasol League – went to battle it out for the top honours. Teams that competed include: Executive Ladies FC (Eastern Cape); Ixias FC (Free State); JVW FC (Gauteng); Sunflower FC (KwaZulu Natal); Ma Indies FC (Limpopo); Nkomazi Ladies FC (Mpuma-
langa); Royal Queens FC (North West); Royal Wizards FC (Northern Cape) and Vasco Da Gama (Western Cape). The trophy remains in the Gauteng province as Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) won the competition last year. JVW FC is a South African women's football club based in Bedford view Ekurhuleni. Since 2014, the club has been affiliated to the South African Football Association. The First Team competes at the highest level of women's football in South Africa, The Sasol League, whilst the rest of
the club competes in the local league, under Eastern Local Football Association. Established in 2013, the team is part of the JVW Girls Football Development Program, which was founded in 2012 by the South African Senior Women’s National Team captain, Janine van Wyk. Van Wyk. As finalists, both JVW Girls Footbal and runners-up Ma Indies have been being promoted to the SAFA National League. Tsakane Stadium is the official host of the Sasol National Championship Women’s League which kicked off on December 3 until the 8th.
Sports Portfolio committee calls for more funding for federations,councils! The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation has called for more funding for local sports federations and councils in the province. The committee’s chairperson, Honorable William Matsheke (on behalf of the Portfolio Committee) indicated during the Gauteng Sport Confederation Strategic Planning Session that the current budget allocation to the Gauteng Sport Confederation of R5,3 Million as part of the Conditional Grant allocation for partnerships with community structures for recreational activities and school sport structures amongst others is not sufficient compared to other Provinces considering the size of the population of Gauteng. The Portfolio Committee called upon the department to re-look at the budget allocation to the Gauteng Sports Confederation as the current budget allocation is minimal for the confederation to adhere to its mandate as indicated on the National Sports and Recreation Plan Vision 2030. The Committee further calls upon the department to redirect the transfers that they are currently transferring directly to clubs and affiliates of the confederation to be redirected to the confederation for improved monitoring and
evaluation by the confederation as highlighted by the National Sport and Recreation Plan. “By doing such the department will avoid a situation where there are duplication of resources and previously disadvantaged sporting codes will also get an equal share of the transfers as the current system favours the previously advantaged sporting codes,” said the chairperson. The Chairperson further indicated that funding for sports in Gauteng is too fragmented as there is a lot of funding that goes to individual clubs or associations and therefore indicated that there is a need for these funds to be channelled to Gauteng Sport Confederation since they are experts in sport development. According toThe National Sport and Recreation Plan Vision 2030: Strategic Objectives, objective 11 states the government will integrate the development of South African Sport at Provincial and local levels through sports councils and confederations. Among the key activities of the implementation of such a goal, the provincial government through the provincial sport department guided by SASCOC should ensure that sports councils/ confederations are structured and operational at local, regional and provincial levels. The Provincial department, in this instance, the Gaut-
eng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation should provide seed and incubation funding for the Provincial Sport Council/Confederation. It should also ensure that Councils/Confederations act as an interface to support the linking of hubs/clubs with federations, municipalities, civil society structures and NGOs to ensure integration of sports programs and to avoid duplication of resources. The committee was invited invited by the Gauteng Sport Confederation to their Strategic Planning Session held on Saturday, October 12 as part of its responsibilities of oversight and scrutiny on departmental programs.

Hundreds gather in support for Makate!

About 200 people protested outside the Vodacom Head Office in Midrand on Thursday, January 31, demanding that Nkosana Makate, a former Vodacom employee who claims the company stole his “Please Call Me” invention, be compensated. The protesters, made up of various political parties, members of the 'PleaseCallMe' movement and community of Katlehong held placards saying “Justice for Makate” and “Vodacom pay Makate”. Two Nyalas and a row of police officers barricaded the entrance of the phone company’s property. The head office appeared to be shut during
the protest. The Please Call Me Movement, the organisation that organised the protest, had given Vodacom until 10am on Thursday (January 31) to pay the R70 billion to Makate. Please Call Me is a free service launched in 2001 that allows cellphone users to send a text request asking to be called back. Makate says he invented the Please Call Me service 18 years ago and pitched it to his boss at the time, Phillip Geissler. Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi was a Zimbabwean musician, businessman, philanthropist, human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Southern Africa Region. Tuku was considered to have been Zimbabwe's most renowned and internationally recognised cultural icon of all time. On January 23, Mtukudzi died at the age of 66 at Avenues Clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe. All his life when he recorded his debut single in 1975 to 2019 - 61 albums on Oliver Mtukudzi has written and performed some of the most recognized Af-
rican music on various social topics. He has composed music appealing for restraint, for tolerance…music about selfdiscipline and peace amongst the people of the world. His music has continued to touch people in many different ways, guiding and stirring past generations in the same manner the compositions will impact on the future. Oliver’s musical career started at the age of 23 with the 1975 release of his debut single, Stop After Orange. We will not fix these schools!
Just days before schools re-open, two schools have been looted and set alight. The Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi has condemned the attacks on two schools, believed to be attacked on the same day! Both incidents were reported on Thursday, July 4 by eye witnesses who took to social media to spread the word about the burning classrooms in Mountain View High School (in Heidelberg) and the Katlehong Primary School. South Africans responded to the incidents after the MEC posted pictures of damaged classrooms on his Twitter account. In response to these events, Lesufi has laid the blame on the communities for the damages and said the department may not help repair the damages. Allegations suggest that the Katlehong community torched the classrooms due to an electricity cut-off, but this is yet to be confirmed by official reports. In Heidelberg, no protests were reported and police are investigating both incidents. The Gauteng Education department officials have visited the schools.
