Lightning strikes tree killing woman!

On Wednesday night, December 28, a 37 year old woman was tragically killed in an accident involving a falling tree at Freedom Park extension 3 in Villa Liza, near Boksburg.

According to reports, the tree had been struck by lightning and fell on the woman while she was inside a mobile ablution toilet.

Some informal settlement nearby were also damaged during the thunderstorms.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene confirmed the woman’s death.

Rescue crews were called to the scene to remove the tree brush and recover the woman’s body. The incident has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.

This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of severe weather and the importance of staying safe during storms.

Informal traders permits now digital!

The City of Johannesburg has introduced a new digital informal trading permit system that aims to streamline the need process and provide real-time information to traders.

According to Herold Mbowane, Deputy Director for Informal Trading, the system will serve as an information center to send communication to traders via SMS and assist in bylaw management.

“The City’s previous informal trader system was manual, could not generate and provide real-time information, and could easily be manipulated,” he said.

It will also be able to generate reports for the informal trading sector and is consistent with

the informal trading policy, which was approved by the Johannesburg City Council in April of last year.

The new system was fully implemented after a pilot process that lasted over three months and will allow beneficiaries to register and apply anywhere at any time, saving time and money.

However, Mbowane emphasized that the personal data of all beneficiaries will always be safeguarded.

Once fully-fledged, the digital application system will enable a trader or anyone wishing to become a trader in the City of Johannesburg to register and apply for a trading permit remotely at their leisure, ensuring the municipality is in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Boksburg explosion death toll now at 40!

A total of 40 fatalities have been reported toll from the Boksburg liquid petroleum gas tanker explosion, with five people still hospitalized with injuries.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced the updated numbers during a media briefing on Thursday morning, January 12, and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

On Christmas Eve, the tanker became stuck under a low-lying bridge in a residential area, causing a massive explosion that killed several bystanders, including 12 health workers from the nearby Tambo Memorial Hospital. Several properties, including parts of the hospital, were damaged.

Lesufi announced that the Department of Infrastructure Development has already appointed a contractor to repair the hospital damage, and that some of the work is almost at the completion stage, following delays because of the festive period break.

Due to the extent of the damage, the casualty unit at the hospital remains closed.

Lesufi also said he was aware of the intentions of the victim's families to institute a class action suit, and that they have a right to pursue whatever means of recourse available to them within the legal system.

Meanwhile, LieutenantGeneral Mawela said they have obtained more than 40 witness statements, but are still outstanding key exhibits to be brought to assist with finalising the investigation.

Mawela said the charges we have put against the driver are reckless and negligent driving, malicious damage to property and culpable homicide. He added that there is a possibility of adding other charges.

The provincial government continues to provide support to the affected families in the form of trauma debriefing services.

The City of Ekurhuleni Community Development Workers (CDWs) are also conducting door-to-door visits in the area.

Booster vaccines available for all adults!

The Department of Health will begin to make additional COVID-19 vaccination booster doses available to all adults, following the detection of the more transmissible XBB.1.5 sub-variant of the Omicron variant in the country.

The department’s Dr Lesley Bamford explained that currently, adults over the age of 50 are eligible to receive four doses – including booster doses – of the vaccine, while those between 18 and 49 can receive three doses.

“It is our intention to offer an additional dose. So that will be a fifth dose for people 50 years and older and a fourth dose for people 18 to 49 years of age. Those additional doses will also be available for people who are immunocompromised.

“Our expectation is that those additional booster doses will be available during January, probably to-

wards the end of the month. But we are working hard to provide those additional doses.

“Any adult who has not had a dose in the past six months, whether they are immunocompromised or not, will be eligible to receive an additional booster dose,” she said.

Bamford added that children between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age will not be eligible for booster doses.

“That age group is eligible to receive two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Our Vaccine Ministerial Advisory Committee has indicated that they currently do not recommend that we provide booster doses to that age group based on an understanding that the protection provided by the two doses should be adequate in that age group which is at low risk of severe COVID-19 infection.

New Year’s Eve on Saturday, December 31, was penciled as the day to deactivate the e-tolls billing system.

However, the Gauteng Provincial Government says due to the need to finalize key components of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between them and National Government, the matter will be finalised in the new year.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi wishes to assure Gauteng residents that there is no turning back on doing away with e-tolls. The Premier is thrilled by the progress made thus far by the technical team that has been assigned with deactivating the e-tolls billing system.

The notice to switch off the e-tolls will be gazetted, with the switchoff taking place 14-days after the release of the gazette. The gazette will be released in early 2023, as agreed by the national Department of Transport.

As part of their annual ‘Back-ToSchool’ programme on Wednesday (January 11), the Gauteng Provincial Government visited various schools across the province. Every member of the executive committee (MECs) including the Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, attended the first morning assemblies of public schools.

Premier Panyaza and Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane officially launched the rebuilt Mapenane Secondary School in GaRankuwa, City of Tshwane, he was joined by Education MEC Matome Chiloane.

The scope of works at Mapenane Secondary School consists of the restoration and repairs of existing classrooms and the construction of the new admin block, two classroom blocks, a science laboratory, a library, a nutrition block, a guard house, a refuse yard and two ablution blocks. Regarding the unplaced learners, the premier committed that every child will be placed in the 2023 academic year. The Gauteng Department of Education has placed at over 291,000 learners, with less than 500 remaining (as at January 12).

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, participated in oversight visits to Laban Motlhabi Comprehensive in KwaThema, where she planted a food garden. She was joined by the City of Ekurhuleni executive mayor Ald. Tania Campbell.

MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Morakane Mosupyoe handed over dignity packs and toys to Thutoboswsa ECD Centre and visited four schools in Magaliesburg and donated sports gear and flags.

MEC for Economic Development, Tasneem Motara visited four schools and ECD centres in Soshanguve, City of Tshwane. She shared the various career opportunities within her department and in entrepreneurship.

Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela visited Sibongile Early Learning Centre and Alafang Secondary School in Katlehong. She later had an engagement with local education stakeholders as part of her tours.

Rest In Peace Cllr. Kent Nyamade!

It is with great sadness that Dipaleseng Local Municipality announces the passing of one of its councilors, Councillor Kent Nyamade, on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

Cllr. Nyamade had been hospitalized and battling an illness for a prolonged period of time before his passing.

Cllr. Nyamade served as the ANC Councilor for Ward 5 in Grootvlei and was also the Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), a sub-committee of Council.

He was re-elected to both of these positions in the November 2021 Local Government Elections.

The municipality extends its deepest condolences to Cllr. Nyamade’s family, friends, and colleagues and offers its

prayers for them during this difficult time.

Cllr. Nyamade will be remembered as a humble soldier and people’s combatant and his spirit will be forever at rest.

A memorial service for Cllr. Nyamade was held in his honor on Friday, January 6 at the DA Mandi Hall in Grootvlei, starting at 10am.

Learners in Gauteng have an amazing opportunity to get their studies and other costs paid in full when they reach their tertiary education journey.

The Gauteng Department of Education wishes to announce that the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) Bursary applications for the 2023 academic year opens on November 1 and close on February 28, 2023.

“Applicants must ensure that they meet the key requirements and upload all the necessary documents for their application to be considered. We implore young people who meet the criteria to apply for the GCRA Bursary as it is an amazing opportunity to further your studies without having to worry about finances,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.

“It is important to note that candidates who seek to apply must be South African citizens between the ages of 18 to 35 years old, who reside and have completed their matric in Gauteng,” said the department. Candidates must also be

students who have been accepted to study an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification at a Higher Education Institution.

Key requirements when applying for the GCRA Bursary are:

• Certified SA ID copy

• Proof of Gauteng residence (water and electricity bill from the municipality or letter from the ward councillor)

• Certified statement of results

• Academic record (only for current undergraduate in 2nd year, 3rd year, etc. and postgraduate students)

• Certified copies of parents/guardians ID copies (death certificate in case of deceased parent/s)

• For single parent households, please provide an affidavit done by the responsible parent/guardian

• Certified proof of both parents/guardians payslips (if unemployed, provide affidavit proving unemployment or SASSA letter)

• Motivational letter written by applicant

• Proof of acceptance/registration from higher education institution

Kutoane plays the character of Ntate Moloi, a supporting lead role alongside polular actors like Meshack Mavuso, Nicholas Nkuna and Mapaseka Koetle. His role will be the father of the bride, joined by his on-screen wife Mrs Moloi (played by legendary actress Clementine Mosimane).

“Ntate Moloi is a good man but has his crazy moments on the show,” he said.

The 13-episode comedy produced by Black Brain Pictures tells a unique South African tale of a divorcing couple navigating a new life of co-parenting, family drama, dating and everything else under one roof.

Getting a role was not an easy task as Neo was shortlisted with the country’s best actors.

“In November, I attended the auditions with hundreds of people looking to get a role in the new sitcom. I progressed both the first and second

round auditions. A few days later, I was called by BlackBrain Pictures for a closed audition at their offices,” he explained.

Two days later, Kutoane was called with the good news of his successful audition.

Kutoane is no stranger to our screens, he has been cast on several local shows as a supporting actor. He is remembered for his appearance in the popular SABC 1 drama, Skeem Sam, Diep City and Isibopho.

Apart from being an actor, he is known for his work as a pastor, voice-over artist and Professional MC/Speaker. He also does his part for the community in helping the vulnerable and helping young thespians enter the industry through his agency, Neozar Media Agency.

Who Wins In The Quest For Straight Teeth?

Everyone wants beautiful straight teeth that can flash a million Rand smile but deciding how to go about getting one is enough to cause a toothache. Most South Africans have plenty of options between braces or aligners, but sometimes having too much choice isn’t a good thing.

Dr Sheryl Smithies, a top aesthetic dental surgeon and facial aesthetic practitioner explains that most patients get to pick their preference based on what best suits their lifestyle. The revered dental genius shares some important information that people should consider before making that all important final decision.

Firstly, brace yourself with the facts

Most of us have either worn braces in our childhood, or know someone who has, but how much do we really know about their purpose and functionality?

Braces are essentially wires made of either metal or porcelain which are attached to your teeth (the more modern ones can be fixed behind). More wires and rubber bands are then used to create tension, effectively forcing the teeth to move into the correct position. It’s a slow and very tedious process and can cause uncomfortable pain too. In contract to this, aligners like Invisalign are a more advanced type of orthodontic treatment. These are made of plastic and are custommade to securely fit around only the teeth that need straightening, rather than the whole mouth. Small bumps of composite resin, which is like a tooth-coloured filling material, is used to help the aligner grip the tooth and each one then moves the teeth separately but rapidly, in a step-by-step fashion until it achieves the final layout, with very little discomfort.

Secondly, brush up on the pros and cons of each

The pro’s for both are the same –whichever one you go with; you’re guaranteed to get straighter teeth over time.

Braces, however, can be very painful, especially at the onset with the wires cutting the lips and inside of the cheeks. There is also the risk of them causing potentially irreversible damage to teeth and bone structure, especially over a long period of time and it can some-

If this scares you, then aligners are probably the better option. Not only is this the most advanced way of moving teeth, but they are much easier to clean and there is very little discomfort, except perhaps over the first three days when the mouth is getting used to them.

The almost transparent look of an aligner is especially attractive to older patients who do not want something that is noticeable. If you stay away from some foods like turmeric which can stain, you probably will only need to see a dentist every 3-4 months, which is also welcome news for those with busy lives.

Then chew on the costs

Costs vary depending on the type and length of treatment and every patient will have a different set of circumstances.

Braces can cost anywhere from R30 000 to R70 000, whilst the price bracket for aligners starts from R25,000 to R110,000. Again, this depends on the number of aligners a person needs and the brand.

Finally, choose the one that aligns with you

Because braces are bonded onto your teeth, they require little input from you when it comes to maintenance and so are best suited to those people who are not as diligent with their dental care. The only significant changes you will need to make will be to your eating habits (things like chewing gum is a complete no), and perhaps adding new toothbrushes to your teeth cleaning tools. You should also be prepared for a significant change in your appearance when you smile as well as lots of pain.

Aligners on the other hand are a much quicker treatment as they target only the teeth that need to move, as opposed to all the teeth. They therefore are better suited to those who want a quick transformation but still value comfort, aesthetics and ease of use, and who like to be able to clean their teeth well.

Condolences pour in for Bucs fan, Goodenough Sithole!

Well known Orlando Pirates superfan, Sphamandla ‘Goodenough’ Sithole, passed away in the early hours of Friday, January 6.

Sithole, who was affectionately known as “5 Skippers”, established himself as a household name by becoming Orlando Pirates FC’s number one fan, who would attend every club’s matches dressed as a woman.

In the heights of his fame, Goodenough got to make several television appearances. He once led an fan-centered advertising campaign for the ‘Buccaneers’ and was invited to the Gauteng

Sports Awards to present an award. He will also be remembered countrywide by his entertaining choice of words during television and radio interviews. He coined popular phrases like ‘I like it for the Pirates’ and ‘is not make sure’.

The club that Sithole was a loyal member of shared its message of support on social media. “Rest in peace, 5 Skippers. On behalf of the extended Orlando Pirates Football Club family, we convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Sithole family.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined the world in sharing their grief following the passing of global football icon and social activist, Pelé.

Pelé was a legendary Brazilian professional footballer who was widely considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Real name, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, passed away at the age of 82 after an extended cancer-related illness on Thursday, December 28.

“President Ramaphosa offers his deepest sympathy to Pelé’s family and friends and to the government and people of Brazil. The President has expressed his condolences in letters to President Jair Bolsonaro as well as incoming President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva,” said the Presidency in a statement on Friday, December 30.

The only three-time FIFA World Cup champion, Pelé dazzled both fans and competitors alike with a skillful and entertaining style of play that made him a global star and icon of excellence in football.

He was a campaigner for improved social conditions in his home country and internationally, and served as Minister of Sport in Brazil from January 1995 to April 1998.

“During the eight decades of his life, Pelé not only filled football stadiums with exhilaration but he filled hearts and homes with hope and the knowledge that adversity was surmountable,” said the President.

“He was a global inspiration who embodied the best that sport has to offer as an exhibition of physical endeavour and as a means to transform individuals and entire societies from within.

“His endurance and impact on the field of play inspired the resilience with which Pelé worked for peace and justice globally.

“Pelé will be missed by multiple generations of people worldwide who were touched by his life even if they never set foot in a stadium,” said President Ramaphosa.

Pelé visited South Africa in 1995 and met President Nelson Mandela.

According to the Presidency, the two global figures expressed profound admiration for one another based on their common social and political causes.

Biography of Pelé

Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born on October 23, 1940, in Três

Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Pelé began his professional career with Santos FC in 1956 and played with the club until 1974.

During this time, he helped lead the team to numerous victories, including two Copa Libertadores and three Intercontinental Cups. Pelé also played for the Brazilian national team, leading them to three World Cup titles in 1958, 1962, and 1970. He was the all-time leading goalscorer for Brazil and Santos FC.

Pelé was known for his skill, speed, and powerful shots on goal. He was also known for his creative playmaking abilities and his ability to score goals from various positions on the field.

In addition to his success on the pitch, Pelé was also a popular and influential figure off the field. He was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994 and was inducted into the Brazilian Football Museum Hall of Fame in 2006.

Despite retiring from professional football in 1977, Pelé remained a prominent figure in the sport and was widely respected and admired by fans and players alike.

A few days after his passing, the Brazilian government declared a period of mourning.

For over two days since January 2, massive crowds of mourners turned up to say goodbye to the greatest football player as his coffin made its way through the streets of his hometown, Santos.

His funeral was a private burial on the following day.

Netball World Cup calls for volunteers!

Volunteer registration is now open for 300 South African and International citizens to participate in the Netball World Cup which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from the 28 of July to 6 August 2023.

No previous volunteer experience or formal qualifications are needed to participate as full training will be provided. Volunteers will be required for a variety of roles such as hospitality, ticketing, court side assistants and much more, to help Netball World Cup 2023 deliver a truly unique South African World Cup experience.

Completed registration forms to be submitted by no later than 15 February 2023.

There are a limited number of volunteer roles available and shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview at the Volunteer Office at the CTICC/City of Cape Town library/Waterfront Hotel (venue examples).

The following requirements are compulsory to volunteer:

• You have to avail yourself for the full duration of the competition.

• You will be vetted by State Security.
