THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC SECTION OF THE PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS’ ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

The Middle Atlantic Section of The Professional Golfers’ Association of America (MAPGA), headquartered in Stafford, Virginia, is one of 41 Sections of The Professional Golfers’ Association of America, headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The MAPGA, founded in 1925, and headquartered in Stafford, VA consists of about 1,100 PGA Professionals and Associates in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

The PGA of America, formed in 1916, is the world's largest working sports organization with more than 27,000 members and associates who are the recognized experts in growing, teaching, and managing the game of golf, while serving millions of people nationwide.

The MAPGA provides a wide variety of programs and assistance to support its members, who in turn, provide valuable service not only to their golfing customers, but also to their communities in general. PGA Professionals assist in raising over $6 million annually for local charities. The MAPGA also provides computerized handicapping in conjunction with the Virginia and the Maryland State Golf Associations.

Paul Michaelian was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on August 11, 1962 to Charlie and Joan Michaelian. He had two older brothers, Tom (Jeanine) and Dick (Becky), and a younger sister, Margaret (DeJournette).

His father introduced him to golf at Williamsburg CC. When his brothers stopped playing baseball and started playing golf, Paul did the same and at age 13 he started playing golf in earnest. In addition to his father, Paul had one other big influence in his life, John Mattson. John was an assistant professional at Williamsburg CC for Banks Guyton. “Big John” took Paul under his wing and, among other things, took him on his first golf trip. Paul was John’s caddy in the Virginia State Open at The Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club.

Paul’s first work experience in golf was at Williamsburg Country Club as the cart boy for Pete Britton, Jr. making $2/hour and all the range balls he wanted to hit, if he picked them up, but 14-year-old Paul loved it. In 1984, after graduating from Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC with a BS in Business Administration, Paul began his professional career in golf back at Williamsburg CC as an assistant professional. He relocated to Richmond in 1987 to

be an assistant professional at The Country Club of Virginia. In 1989, Paul was elected to membership in the PGA of America and promoted to Head PGA Professional at CCV’s Westhampton Course. In 1996, Paul was promoted again, this time to be the Head Professional at CCV’s James River and Tuckahoe Creek Golf Courses, where he met his lovely wife, Michele. He then worked as Head Professional at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond before being selected as the Head PGA Professional at The Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach. Paul served in that role for thirteen years before retiring in 2016. Even after retiring, Paul continued to serve the golf community by spreading his love of the game to the youth of The First Tee of Hampton Roads.

Paul began his leadership roles with the MAPGA and the Southern Chapter beginning at the end of 1995, when he was elected Secretary of the Southern Chapter. After two years, he was elected to be their President and in 1999, Paul was elected Section Secretary. After serving as the Section Vice President for the two years, Paul served as the MAPGA President from 2004-2005. He has served as the chair and as a member of numerous committees during his time with the Section. Paul served the National PGA as a delegate for many Annual Meetings and on the PGA Board of Control from 2011-2015. In that role, Paul was one of 4 PGA Members to study, learn and help adjudicate issues with specific PGA professionals. In total, Paul reviewed hundreds of cases each year, always trying to help and serve his fellow PGA professionals.

Paul was the recipient of the 1994 MAPGA Professional Development Award, honoring him for outstanding service and contributions in the areas of education and professional development for fellow PGA professionals. He was honored as the MAPGA Professional of the Year in 2003, the Section’s highest annual honor for the consummate PGA professional.

Paul was married to his wife, Michele, for 24 years. Together, they raised three children: Kyle, Ross, and Caroline. Kyle went on to be a First Lieutenant in the US Army and now has 2 children of his own (Miles and Parker) with his wife, Christina. Ross is serving in the US Navy, stationed in Virginia Beach and in the spring, Caroline will be graduating from nursing school at Virginia Commonwealth University. Paul proudly told everyone he met about their three children and two grandchildren.

Rick was born in December 1962 in Jacksonville, FL at the Naval Air Station, to parents Rear Admiral Gordon “Dutch” Schuller and Anita (Faustini) Schuller. He was the youngest of 5 children with older brothers Jeff (now deceased) and Ron, and older sisters Donna and Laura (now deceased).

Rick moved around a bit as a youngster, but feels he got the best end of the deal compared to his siblings because his father had progressed in rank (and better housing) by the time the youngest child was growing up! His Dad was often deployed for 6 months at a time, but his mom was an amazing superhero to get 5 kids everywhere they needed to go and to finish their homework!

Rick became exposed to golf when the family was stationed in Japan at Atsugi Naval Air Station. Their family housing backed up to the golf course, and there was a 60-yard golf hole in their shared backyard. He loved playing around and started working at the driving range at the golf course. As the only family member who played (at the time), he taught himself to play and is still essentially self-taught. He played in his first tournament in Japan, and still has the press clipping. He still played all the other sports and feels that helped his game immensely.

When Rick and the family moved back to Virginia, he joined the golf team at Fairfax High School with Frank and Rob Ferguson and was coached by their dad. He loved playing and practicing with the team, played many rounds at Army Navy Fairfax, and got good enough to draw attention from college coaches. He was recruited to Old Dominion University to play golf by Murray Rudisill. Even though Rick graduated in 1985, Coach Rudisill is still there!

Rick tried the minitours for a grueling 5 years. He relocated to Florida and had his ups and downs. Ultimately, afterward he quit golf altogether for 2 full years. A request for a lesson from his Father-in-law got him reenergized in the game. He was able to land a job at Congressional CC as the junior golf professional in 1992. Rick next went to Chantilly CC, where he worked under a man he would call his mentor, Dick Canney. Dick was very connected to his PGA peers, and also a good player. After helping to open River Creek Club with Bud Lintelman, Rick was playing well enough to earn conditional status on the then Buy.com tour in 2000 (Now Korn Ferry Tour), which got him a dozen starts or so.

A move to Richmond later that year, first working for John Sarrett at Willow Oaks CC, led to Rick’s first Head Professional job at CC of Petersburg. He then moved to the same role at River’s Bend GC. After that didn’t work out, Rick returned to his love of teaching, at Swader’s Sports Park, then Stonehenge CC, and now at Meadowbrook CC.

Rick’s Section playing record is almost impossible to quantify. He has been an outstanding player in the Section for many years. Rick won the Section Championship 4 times (’03, ’04, ’08, ’09) and was Section Player of the Year 5 times (’98, ’04, ’07, ’09, ’14) and Senior Player of the Year 6 times (’13, ’15, ’17, ’20, ’21, ’22). In 2009, Rick won both the National Match Play and the National Stroke Play on the way to winning National Player of the Year honors. He also won the National Match Play in 2006 and 2011. He played in the National Club Pro Championship 15 times, and the PGA Championship 3 times (2001, 2003, 2016). He also played in 3 Senior PGA Championships, a US Amateur (1984) and two US Opens. Rick’s list of playing accomplishments includes over 100 wins in MAPGA Section events and qualifiers.

Rick says he owes his success to his parents. They instilled discipline in his upbringing. You set goals, and then worked hard to achieve them. His Mom and Dad, complimented by his siblings, taught him perseverance and persistence. He was driven by a desire to keep up with his older brothers and sisters, which developed into a lifelong habit.

Rick is married to his wife, Wendy, of 24 years. They have adult children Lee, Sam, and the late Hannah (Schuller) Horr.

Larkin Gross, a resident of Center Cross, Va., and the Assistant PGA Professional at Springfield Golf and Country Club, in Springfield, Va., is the 2023 MAPGA Assistant Professional Association Division Player of the Year. Gross earned Top 3 finishes across all 7 POY qualifying events, while capturing championships at the APA Stroke Play @ Spring Creek and APA Stroke Play @ Federal Club, and a T-1 at the APA Better Ball @ Chevy Chase, while maintaining a 70.8 scoring average. Gross played four years on the Methodist University Golf Team which won the DIII National Championship in 2018. He also finished 4th in a field of 312 PGA Professionals at the 2021 Club Professional National Championship which qualified him for the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Ocean Course. In addition to winning the 2021 MAPGA Player of the Year, he was recognized as the 2021 PGA of America Player of the Year.

Ashley Grier, a resident of Hagerstown, Md., and the Assistant PGA Professional at Yinglings Golf Center is the 2023 MAPGA Women’s Player of the Year, winning for the sixth time. Grier earned Top 10 finishes across all 8 POY qualifying events, while capturing the Northern Chapter Championship and the Women’s Championship and earning a T-1 in both the Stroke Play Championship #1 and #2 events. She also maintained a 72.4 scoring average. Grier’s father David, also an MAPGA professional, has played a meaningful role in her life for over 40 years. She graduated from the University of Central Florida where she played on the Women’s Golf Team. Grier began her professional career competing on the Future’s Tour (now the Symetra Tour) for over five years. In 2014, Grier earned her PGA Membership, and began her career on the teaching side of the business, while continuing to compete at a very high level. In fact, she has enjoyed a successful playing career, competing in five major championships (four KPMG Women’s PGA Championships and one U.S. Women’s Open), while earning many awards, including 2021 Philadelphia PGA Assistant Player of the Year and 2020 (National) Rolex Women’s PGA Professional Player of the Year honors. She’s also played for her country on two victorious U.S. Women’s PGA Cup teams.

Brendan McGrath, a resident of Centreville, Va., and the Assistant PGA Professional at Trump National Golf Club, in Sterling, Va., is the MAPGA 2023 Senior Division Player of the Year. McGrath earned Top 10 finishes across all 9 POY qualifying events, while capturing the Central Chapter Championship, the Senior Open of Virginia and the Maryland Senior Open Championship, while maintaining a 72.2 scoring average. He is only the second player to ever win both Senior State Opens in the same year. McGrath, who didn’t play college golf or start teaching in earnest until after he turned 40, has enjoyed a stellar career as a senior player capturing numerous championships, including the Senior Open of Virgina in both 2023 and 2021, as well as the 2023 Maryland Senior Open. In 2017, McGrath was one of 34 players to qualify for the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which took place at his now home club, Trump National Golf Club, and where he competed alongside the game’s greatest players, such as Bernard Langer, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, and many others.

Steve Delmar, a resident of Gaithersburg, Md., and the Head PGA Professional at Columbia Country Club, in Bethesda, Md., is the MAPGA 2023 Open Division Player of the Year. Across 8 POY qualifying events in 2023, Delmar earned six Top 10 finishes, while capturing the Jani-King Match Play Championship and maintaining a 70.3 scoring average. A decorated MAPGA player, Delmar was named Head Golf Professional at historic Columbia Country Club in 2022, replacing longtime Head Golf Professional Bob Dolan, and making him only the fourth individual to hold the position in the 125-year history of the club. Steve graduated from Coastal Carolina University, where he was a member of the Men’s Golf Team, and then was the Assistant Men’s Golf Coach at the University of Maryland. Delmar assumed the Head Golf Professional position at Columbia Country Club after serving as the Club’s Assistant Golf Professional for the past six years. In addition to his teaching and business acumen, Delmar is an accomplished player, having won four MAPGA Major titles, including the Section Championship in 2019, Assistant Championship in 2019 and 2020, and the Players Cup in 2021. He was also named the MAPGA Player of the Year in 2019.

Mike Morrone was born on September 13, 1984 in Massachusetts to Paul and Maureen Morrone. His entire family, including sister Elizabeth Hill and brother Anthony Morrone were all big sports fans, especially Boston sports. He began playing golf at the age of six after he was introduced to the game by his father, who frequently played at a municipal golf course in Worcester, MA named Green Hill. Mike would walk the course with his dad at a very young age, even before he could play himself and he fell in love with it.

His first job in the golf industry was as a caddie at the International Golf Club at the age of 14, before he landed a job as an outside attendant at Sterling Country Club. Mike’s high school team became state champions, and the team was recently inducted into his high school’s athletic Hall of Fame. Bucky Buchanan was the first head professional he worked for at Sterling CC and he counts him amongst his mentors in the industry having modeled a lot of his professional style after him.

Morrone graduated from the PGM Program at Clemson University in 2007 and was elected into PGA Membership in 2008. While at Clemson, Mike was able to intern under some of the best golf professionals in the industry at Bandon Dunes, Muirfield Village and The Country Club in Brookline, MA. These experiences helped Mike gain invaluable knowledge and play a big role in shaping him as the professional he is today. In addition to his internships, he worked briefly at GOLFTEC- Richmond before joining the staff at The Foundry Golf Club as an Assistant PGA Professional in 2009. In 2014, he was promoted to his current role at the club as Head PGA Professional.

He credits his dad and family for playing a big role in starting the Emergency 9 Golf podcast as well. Since Boston sports were so big for them, it was all they talked about. Having such a love of golf, sports, and sports talk is why he started the podcast with some close friends in the golf industry.

Morrone is joined on the Emergency 9 Golf podcast by his co-hosts McLean Boyd and Jay Woodson. Boyd is the son of Bob Boyd who was a legendary PGA Professional in the Carolinas Section (and briefly the Middle Atlantic Section) and is a master fitter with a major club manufacturer. Woodson is a former tour professional and four-time winner of the State Open of Virginia. He was a contestant on the Big Break and winner of the Big Break Invitational.

Morrone is married to his high school sweetheart Lyndi and they have two daughters Isabella (10) and Emilia (6).

Scott Bavaro, was born in the summer of 1973 in Wilmington, Delaware to Susan Duggan and the late Sam Bavaro. He grew up in Catonsville, Maryland until the age of 14 when his family moved to Columbia, Maryland where he attended Oakland Mills High School. At the age of 12, Scott was introduced to the game of golf by his father and he fell in love instantly. Scott played baseball, and tennis, but eventually realized that golf was his true passion.

In the resort town of Montauk, New York, Scott’s father, Sam, owned an Italian restaurant that was situated on a golf course. Scott spent a few summers with his dad in the Hamptons and this is where he started to play golf. During his high school years, Scott worked for his dad bussing tables in the restaurant. Playing golf all day and busing tables at night was the daily routine for Scott on these summer days.

Following high school, Scott traveled west to attend West Virginia University in Morgantown. Throughout his time at WVU, Scott did his best to study, but also waited tables at a few local watering holes. He graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.

The golf world did not find Scott immediately after college graduation. He took a job bartending at Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club in Columbia, Maryland. Once again, Scott found himself playing lots of golf during the day, and bartending at night. After three years at Hobbit’s Glen, he knew that he wanted to get on the sales side of the golf industry.

In 1999, Scott began to establish roots in the golf sales world by working for the innovator of non-metal golf shoe cleats, SoftSpikes, Inc. He then began working for Nike Golf, where in 2013 he was named the Nike Golf National Sales Representative of the Year. Following his successful time at Nike he joined the staff at TaylorMade where he was named the 2020 Sales Culture Representative of the Year in and the Northeast Sales Representative of the Year in 2021. He attributes his personal success to truly loving what he does for a living and “feels blessed to be around a sport that he loves with accounts that he can truly call his friends.”

Scott has been married to his wife of 19 years, Jennifer and they share two children, Ava Leigh (17) and Dominick Anthony (15).

Kendy Vierling grew up in Arizona playing golf and other sports with her sister, Alissa. She was introduced to the game of golf by her father who was a recreational golfer and began playing competitive golf at the age of twelve. She and her sister were fortunate that their parents were supportive of them playing sports and they spent their free time in childhood traveling to play in golf and soccer tournaments.

Vierling received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Advertising from Southern Methodist University and her Masters in Exercise Science from Arizona State University. Vierling then earned her Ph.D. in Exercise Science from Arizona State University, where she focused on social psychological and psychophysiological factors of human performance.

Vierling’s first job in the golf industry was on the ASU coaching staff as the Manager/Graduate Assistant for a few years, and Assistant Coach of the Arizona State University (ASU) Women’s Golf Team for a year. There she was able to pursue graduate degrees; learn about coaching, golf instruction, golf operations such as hosting tournaments, teach undergraduate human performance-related academic courses, and conduct human performance-related research. During her last year assisting the ASU Women’s Golf Team, her sister became a member of the team. Vierling remarked at how special that time was, as it was exciting to see her sister develop as a player and be able to support her.

The team’s sport psychologist, Dr. Debbie Crews, was an ASU faculty member, researcher, and an experienced LPGA instructor who mentored Vierling. Crews encouraged her to become a golf professional, apply to become a member of the LPGA, and helped her navigate the LPGA certification process. In addition to Dr. Crews, other individuals Vierling credits with guiding her through her golf development include Cathy Marino, who was her college golf coach at Southern Methodist University, and many other LPGA and PGA professionals who have taught her so much. Within the PGA, Steve Greiner, Colonel Dick Johns (USA, Ret), and Alan Smith have all been mentors. She highlights how much she has enjoyed working with them for many years to implement a positive, professional adaptive golf instruction program to aid injury rehabilitation for wounded Service Members, disabled veterans, their families, and caregivers.

Since 2008, Vierling has served as a Golf Instructor, Links to Freedom / Fort Belvoir Wounded Warrior Golf Program.

Willy was born on June 28, 1976 to his parents Wendy Henderson and the late Willy Lutz. He and his twin brother Tony were joined by younger brother Joseph Maville. He grew up playing on six "practice holes" that were maintained by Hanover Country Club and Dartmouth College. He believes it was a fantastic way to learn the game and develop shot making creativity since the six greens could be played from several tee boxes in multiple directions.

Growing up he had several strong golf influencers but Jeff Jullian stands out. He was the first person from Vermont to play on the PGA Tour and was a bit of local legend in the area that he grew up in. He was talented and successful, but so down to earth that he took the time to get to know Willy and helped him when he landed his first golf job as a range attendant at the Quechee Club in Quechee, VT (where he worked, practiced and played).

Willy served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Army Navy CC from 1999 to 2003 and First Assistant Professional at Old Hickory Golf Club from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, he landed the Head Golf Professional job at South Riding Golf Club where he served until 2013 and during which he earned his PGA membership in 2007. Lutz became the General Manager at Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club in 2014, where he still serves today, becoming an equity partner in 2020.

His personal golf philosophy is to take care of your club/ course and your club/ course will take care of you. He believes that you must always invest in the personal and professional relationships that matter and strive to achieve an unlimited "account balance" with them. He also notes that you shouldn’t take yourself too seriously and to have fun! His merchandising philosophy is to have an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction, intricately weaving together customer service, meticulous attention to detail, customer-centricity, and keen market trend awareness.

He and his wife Paige met on a golf course and have been married for twenty years. They share two daughters Hannah who is a freshman at the University of Tennessee and Katie who is a junior at Paul VI High School.

Zach was born in Virgnia Beach, VA in 1980 to his parents, Hal and Linda. His father introduced him to the game at Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin, Virginia. He took him to the club at the age of 11 after watching The Masters on television the day before. His decision to focus on golf came when he finished third in his very first Junior golf event. After that he was hooked and really started to practice and play a lot more.

He earned his Sports Management Degree and Business Management Degree from North Greenville College in Greenville, South Carolina. There he was a four-year starter. who won six individual college tournaments and named College All-America his senior year.

After college, Zach joined the staff at Bay Creek Resort and Club in 2001. From 2001-2008 he served as an Assistant Golf Professional. He was elected to membership in the PGA of America in 2007, and in 2008 he was promoted to Head Golf Professional. He served in that role until 2020 when he received a promotion to his current role as the Director of Golf.

His personal philosophy is to work hard and be enthusiastic about whatever you do. He shared that the goal of the club is to provide guests with a high-level experience from the moment they walk into the golf shop, that they not only want to have great top of the line quality products but also extend a friendly and professional feel. He notes that the product buying mix is important, but the staff is the most important part of the success there. They purchase mostly bright vibrant colors and patterns to merchandise the shop with. With being a vacation destination in addition to their location very near Chesapeake Bay, the bright vibrant colors sell so much better. Resort guests are happiest on vacation and really gravitate to those bright vibrant colors and patterns.

He has a son Zachary Pfingst Jr who is 13 years old and plays guitar. He and his wife Sarai Diaz have been married for three years.

Matt Fuller was born in Durango, Colorado in 1979 to Karen and Steve Fuller. He, along with his sister Sydney Dickinson were raised in a small town outside of Telluride, CO where there was one golf course within an hour’s drive. He was introduced to the game at 8 years old by his father at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez, CO. He also played golf during the summers with his grandparents at New Haven Country Club (CT).

Fuller credits his first mentor Micah Rudosky, Head Golf Professional at Conquistador Golf Course, for teaching him the importance of growing the game, building relationships and the importance being well versed in many areas of becoming a PGA Professional.

He attended New Mexico State University in their PGA Golf Management Program, earning his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing with an emphasis in golf management in 2002. Matt was elected into PGA Membership in 2003 when he worked at Essex Country Club. There he worked for Head Professional Steve Wilson in West Orange, NJ. Steve was a Caves Valley alumni and is now Director of Titleist Performance Institute (TPI). In 2007, Fuller was hired by Dennis Satyshur, PGA at Caves Valley Golf Club, where he remains to this day. After Satyshur's retirement in late 2021, Matt was named the Director of Golf.

As an Assistant Professional, Megan Leineweber’s performance encompasses everything a Head Professional would want. She wears the many hats of an assistant well with a positive and can-do attitude.

Megan was born in February of 1988 in Baltimore, MD to parents David and Marie Leineweber. Her family, including brother Jeff, moved frequently when growing up and during a move to Pinehurst, NC, she was introduced to the game of golf at the age of twelve. While there weren't a lot of organized sports for girls in Pinehurst at the time- there were a lot of opportunities to play golf, so her dad found a par 3 junior course for her to play.

During her time in youth golf, she was a three-time Pepsi Invitational Champion and won a High School State Golf Team Championship. While at Radford University, Megan excelled on the Golf Team earning Big South Golfer of the Week twice and earning a place on the Big South All Conference Team.

Megan competed on the LPGA’s Symetra Tour from 2012-2014 before joining the staff at Blacksburg Country Club in 2014. She became the first female golf professional at Stonewall Golf Club (PA) in 2016 and then later moved to California to work at Indian Ridge Country Club. In 2021, Megan joined the staff at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, first as an instructor and now as a Lead Assistant Professional. Megan displays a devoted work ethic at TPC Potomac, it is not uncommon for her to put in a 10-12 hour work day to meet the demand of her lesson schedule, operational duties, and squeeze in a little time to practice her craft. She is an accomplished player who qualified and competed in the 2023 National Assistant's Championship.

She notes that her mentors in golf include her father for introducing her to the game along with numerous golf coaches but specifically Al Arrigoni (first golf coach in Pinehurst), Jeff Beeler (Radford Women's Golf Coach), and Jamie Fischer (Director of Instruction at Conway Farms & Indian Ridge CC). Megan also notes that within the PGA her mentors include Brad Ewing, PGA (Head Professional at Blacksburg CC), Ned Graff, PGA (GM at TPC Potomac), Jason Rivard (HP at TPC Potomac), and Sarah Stone, PGA (Director of Instruction at Chevy Chase Club).

She is active in the community volunteering with the First Tee of DEC at clinics and events, coordinating a women’s clinic during the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship and served as an instructor at the KPMG PGA Championship Women’s Clinic.

Megan is engaged to Katelynn Moore, and they share a French Bulldog named Stella.

Leighann was born on December 2, 1979 in Rockford, Ill. to parents Dr. Donald and Meta Rastede. Her family also includes sister Lisa and brother Fred. Leighann began playing golf at the age of seven after her maternal grandfather introduced her to the game at his home club in Green Valley, Az. His intent was to occupy his energetic granddaughter during a visit over spring break. After spotting her potential and enthusiasm for the game, Leighann’s maternal and paternal grandparents united in championing her journey through the game of golf.

Leighann’s first golf related job was an internship after her freshman year at Methodist University in 1999. She interned at the Clinton Country Club in Clinton, IA. During her time at the university, Leighann was an NCAA Academic AllAmerica, All America Honorable Mention, a member of the NCAA Division III National Championship Team (placed T4th individually), and co-captain of the women’s golf team.

Throughout the years, she has held positions as a collegiate coach, assistant professional, head professional and instructor in the game/industry of golf. At Magnolia Green, she serves as the Director of Instruction and growing junior programming at the facility level has been a major part of her role. Her in-school community outreach program has continued to thrive and expand throughout its three years of existence. She has a structured curriculum for children ages 2-18 that includes competition, clinic, camp and adult/junior components. Leighann’s programming is designed to utilize golf as a tool for the development and practice of motor skills, social skills, critical thinking & emotional regulation in a safe and positive learning environment.

Leighann's work has most recently been recognized by Golf Magazine as a 'Top 100 Teacher to Watch.' She has been named to numerous Golf Digest 'Best in State' and 'Best Young Teachers’ lists. She is also a US Kids Master Kids Teacher. Over more than two decades, Leighann has refined, amended, and enhanced her process for youth golf instruction, cultivating a holistic approach to the sport, both mental and physical, that prepares junior players for a lifetime of engaging on the course. Sharing her approach with other instructors has created a strong, vibrant youth golf community both in her region and in other communities where she has trained instructors in how to approach junior instruction and develop their knowledge.

Leighann believes that her primary role as a golf professional, coach and instructor is to develop, inspire, motivate and support people to realize their fullest potential. She leads by example through the work ethic and values instilled in her by her parents and a dedication to lifelong learning. She believes in being continually curious. Adam is heavily involved with Player Development at his facility and in the Section. He takes advantage of every opportunity to learn and share player development information with other PGA Professionals and industry professionals. Adam is very passionate about programs such as PGA Jr League and PGA HOPE. However, he believes quality player development goes beyond a program.

Adam was born in Jacksonville, Florida to Craig and Marty Relan. He has one brother Scott and a late sister Dina Relan Johnson. His father served as an Officer in the United States Navy for 22 years before a successful career in business while his mother was a superwoman raising Adam and his siblings while creating a successful interior design business. He was introduced to the game of golf by his father's parents at a very young age along with a childhood friend on the Gulf Coast in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Relan attended Mississippi State University before transferring to and ultimately graduating from Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina with a degree of Bachelor of Business Administration and Professional Golf Management.

Adam is the Coach of his PGA Jr League team and is the PGA HOPE Lead for the PGA HOPE Tidewater Chapter. His PGA Jr League team was typically a Spring only program. However, last year he expanded to add a Fall season. Adam hosts two PGA HOPE series in the Spring and two more series in the Fall. Besides those programs, he has a robust Ladies Only program. In addition, he runs multiple opportunities for kids to learn the game. These opportunities for juniors include summer camps, clinics and play days. He also encourages juniors to learn with their families. In 2023, he created an instruction package for families to learn together. His idea for families came from his popular couples/buddy instruction series. Adam also hosts a number of clinics throughout the year for adults (Men, Women & Seniors). Besides these instructional programs, Adam hosts a variety of different events to create a fun environment in an effort to create excitement and grow the game. An example of some of those events are Friday Night Mixers, Putting Tournaments, Par 3 Challenge, 4-Club Tournament, 1-Club 9-hole Tournament and GlowVibe Night Golf. This year, besides a full night golf tournament, he added a Par 3 Night Golf Experience.

Adam is active in governance at both the Section level and within the Southern Chapter. He has previously served on the Junior Golf Committee, and he continues to serve as Chair for both the Section's Player Development Committee and the Section's PGA HOPE Committee. Adam brings his love and passion for growing the game to his community as a board member of the First Tee of Hampton Roads. Nationally, Adam also serves on the PGA of America's PGA HOPE Committee.

He and his wife Abbey have been happily married for 20 years and they have a son Ames (17) and a daughter Ana Grace (14).

J.P. was born on June 11, 1968 in Buffalo, New York to parents John and Lynda and has a younger brother, Garrett. He began playing golf at age eight when his father introduced him to the game at Orchard Park Country Club in Orchard Park, NY. He enjoyed this special time spent with his Dad and has loved the game ever since.

J.P. was elected to PGA membership in January 1994, the same year he began working as the Head PGA Professional at Brandermill Country Club in Midlothian, Virginia. In 1995, he became an assistant PGA Professional at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland and in 1998, he went on to be the PGA Director of Golf at Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort in Flintstone, Maryland. He spent only one year at Rocky Gap before accepting the Head PGA Professional position at Holly Hills Country Club where he was promoted to PGA General Manager in 2007. In 2014, J.P. became the President of Sabre Golf, and shortly thereafter purchased a range and became the Head PGA Professional/ Owner of the facility. In 2018, he accepted the role of Head PGA Professional at Fountain Head Country Club where he served until 2021 when he decided to return to his role at Sabre Golf.

J.P. Lunn has been heavily involved with PGA HOPE over the past several years. In 2020, PGA President Jim Richerson created the PGA HOPE Committee and asked J.P. to volunteer to Co-Chair the national committee upon its formation. He still resides on this Committee, serving the Association while heading a sub-committee to spur member engagement in PGA HOPE. The Committee has been instrumental for PGA Professionals to not only grow the game but also for opportunities to increase income potential. The Committee has recently increased PGA stipends for leading and assisting with PGA HOPE, as well as including points towards Deferred Compensation.

Lunn was selected to be a PGA HOPE National Trainer in early 2023. He now travels throughout the country spreading the word of PGA HOPE and certifying PGA Professionals in Adaptive training to be able to instruct at a PGA HOPE chapter. PGA HOPE National Trainers will have trained over 1,000 PGA Professionals this year alone, helping to enhance more than 380 program locations throughout the country. PGA HOPE served over 12,000 veterans in 2023 alone. In the MAPGA, the Section served over 800 veterans, more than tripling the number from last year.

He has found a niche with PGA HOPE that has been a blessing in its own way. J.P. has a personal attachment as his grandfather, Percy Lunn and his father-in-law, Frank Quaintance were both Army veterans. It's very important to realize that everyone, especially with veterans, is in a different place in "their personal journey". This alone gives J.P. a unique viewpoint that many other people may not have the ability to realize and appreciate. Many of our disabilities may not be visible to the eye and it's important to approach every situation with that in mind. J.P. continues to use his individual experiences and enduring passion to influence other PGA Professionals to get involved in PGA HOPE. As of this early 2024, the MAPGA is leading the entire country in PGA HOPE chapters, and J.P. is one reason for this tremendous accomplishment.

Lunn has received numerous MAPGA honors including 2020 Professional of the Year; 2017 Bill Strausbaugh Award; and the 2009 and 2014 Professional Development Award. He was also named the recipient of the 2020 PGA National

The MAPGA President, Lynne Hunter, personally selects this President’s Award winner to recognize an individual who has been working “under the radar,” to improve our game, our industry, and our Association. Ms. Hunter has identified Joan Lovelace, PGA, LPGA for her endless support of the Section, her fellow PGA professionals, and the advancement of the game of golf.

A native of Ellicott City, Md, Lovelace boasts over 40 years of experience teaching golf at all levels of play, while serving as an accomplished golf business leader. A member of both the PGA of America and LPGA, Lovelace is one of only 200 golf professionals nationwide to hold the dual membership distinction.

A lifelong golfer who was introduced to the game by her parents who were avid players, Lovelace’s talent led her to make the Men’s Varsity Golf Team at Howard High School in Ellicott City, where in 1975 she became the first female in Howard County (MD) to play a men’s varsity sport. In fact, she played all four years at Howard HS as the number one or two position on the men's golf team.

Lovelace began her golf career in 1983 at Hobbit's Glen Golf Club. She became an Assistant Professional in 1984, where she learned all facets of the business operation, from running tournaments to teaching, managing the golf shop and much more. During her tenure, she became a member of the LPGA in 1995 and a member of the PGA of America in 2001. She went on to become the General Manager at both facilities in 2004, where she remained for 18 years. In 2022, Joan transitioned to her “dream job” as a full time Director of Instruction at both courses.

A longtime, dedicated golf and business leader, Lovelace has earned numerous awards and accolades throughout her career, including 2012 when she was inducted into the Howard County Women's Hall of Fame, which is an honor given to those who play a varsity sport and give back to their community in their sport. In 2019, she was named the LPGA Northeast Section "Professional of the Year" award. Lovelace has held numerous board and association positions, and currently serves as an advisor to the Howard County High School golf program.

Lovelace has three children, Kevin, Matt, Brian, and four grandchildren. She currently resides in Ellicott City, Md., with her wife Barb Van Winkle.

Giving back to the game and future generations of PGA Professionals has always been a passion for Jason. He learned the importance of this from his mentors, both his grandfather and his college coach, Herb Wimberly, who molded him into the Professional he is today. Herb is a positive force who always does things the right way, and always made you feel better about yourself when you spent time with him. His attitude and outlook on life, and others, was contagious.

Jason Epstein was born March 10, 1972 and was introduced to the game of golf by his grandfather, who he considers his hero. His grandfather lived on the second hole of Crooked Creek Golf Club in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Jason would play that hole repeatedly before dusk each summer night and it was there his grandfather stressed the importance of tradition, sportsmanship, and values. It wasn’t how well you played the game that mattered to his grandfather, rather how you played and respected it; a foundation that has served Jason well in his career.

Jason’s first golf related job was at Kendale Lakes CC (now Miccosukee GC) in Miami, Florida. He would pick-up range balls in the evening in exchange for free play during the day. He played college golf at the University of Cincinnati and New Mexico State University. He was a medalist at the US Amateur Qualifier in 1994 and was a part of the 1995 Big West Conference Championship team.

Jason became a golf professional in 1995, taking a position at The Biltmore GC in Coral Gables, FL. He served in many capacities there, eventually becoming the Director of Golf, overseeing all golf, Grounds and F&B activity. Jason then held the Director of Golf and Operations position at Tuckers Point Club (Bermuda) for three years and the Director of Golf Operations position at The Club at Las Campanas (NM), for five. While in New Mexico, Jason served on the Sections Board, winning the Sun Country Sections PGA Merchandiser of the Year three times and was the PGA’s National Merchandiser of the Year in 2015. In 2016, he joined the staff at Congressional Country Club as Director of Athletics, where he has continued to be involved in programs such as PGA HOPE. Jason was the 2021 recipient of the MAPGA’s Bill Strausbaugh Award, making him a two-time recipient of this prestigious honor.

Jason has had over 70 PGA Professionals achieve their PGA membership while working in his operation. He has mentored 24 Professionals into leadership roles such as GMs and Directors of Golf, and Assistants into leadership positions both at clubs (as Head Professionals and Teaching Professionals) and within the business. Jason has a unique ability to tap into fellow golf professionals’ passions, helping them to achieve their goals and dreams. It is evident that Jason loves to coach on leadership, empowering others to make a difference, and understanding their value as professionals and as people. He is invested in others success, and as a member of the PGA of America’s National Employment Committee, has begun to tackle some of the most pressing issues of the time – creating better opportunities for PGA Professionals and establishing a more balanced life.

Jason has been married to Tina for 18 years. They have three children: sons Sam (16) and Miles (14) and daughter Allister (12). The entire family plays a number of sports and golf together is their favorite.

Bernie was born December 3, 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland to Andre and Bernadette Najar. He grew-up in a large family with siblings Andre, Johnny, Bob, Maryse, Cathy, Isabelle, Helene, Carolyn, Valerie, and Kenny.

Bernie began playing golf at age 13 when he skipped tennis camp to attend his first junior golf clinic at Kenwood Country Club with head PGA Professional Rod Thompson. Rod and his staff at the junior clinics made Bernie’s introduction to golf a fun experience. The thrill of playing a new sport and the challenge of hitting the ball to a distant target encouraged him to play more.

Bernie caddied at Bethesda Country Club under Jim Folks, PGA and worked at Las Vegas Golf and Tennis during his senior year at Walt Whitman High School. He made the All-Metropolitan Golf Team 1988-1990. After his high school graduation in 1990, Bernie attended The American University on a golf scholarship and graduated in 1994 with a BSBA degree in Finance.

In 1994, Bernie went to work at The Suburban Club of Baltimore County in Pikesville, Maryland. A year later, he was hired by The Staples Corporation to teach PGA Professional Charlie Staples’ son, Whit, full-time in Florida. During the summer, when Whit was traveling to tournaments, Bernie taught lessons at Montclair Golf, Tennis, and Swim Club in Montclair, Virginia. In the spring of 1996, Bernie joined the staff at Woodholme Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland as a teaching professional. He completed The PGA’s Golf Professional Training Program in 1998, at which time he was elected to PGA membership. In 2012, Bernie moved his teaching talents from Woodholme to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland where he continues to teach today as the Director of Instruction.

Since 2000, Bernie has been recognized by GolfDigestin their “Best Teachers in State” listing. He has been named a Golf Digest Top-50 Instructor, Golf Magazine’s Top-100 Instructor and a GRAA Top-50 Growth of the Game Instructor. Bernie is the author of the “The Game” Enjoying Golf On and Off The Course,” and a regular contributor to Golf Digest and Golf Magazine with instruction articles and videos. He has been a speaker at many MAPGA Teaching and Coaching Summits and other MAPGA educational sessions including his Caves Valley Spring Seminar which raised $3500 for the PGA REACH Middle Atlantic Foundation in 2023. In addition, Bernie is a national speaker, speaking at other PGA Sections and at the National PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit in 2015.

Some of his notable student achievements in 2023 include: Bryan Kim winning the 2023 USGA Junior Championship and is playing on the Men’s Golf Team at Duke University; Max Rottluff won multiple tournaments on the European Challenge Tour and earned playing privileges on the DP World Tour for 2024; Ryan McCormick earned his PGA Tour card via the Korn Ferry Tour by finishing 28th on the points list; Owen Newberry won the Maryland State Junior by four shots; Ilene Garten won her 8th Straight Senior Club Championship; and Landon Rottman won the Under Armour National Championship.

Bernie’s success as a PGA Professional is a result of loving his job and being self-motivated to continuously develop and improve his skills as a teacher and as a player. When asked, he shared that his mission as a PGA Teacher & Coach

is to help others love the game as much as he does, a value he inherited from his mentors. Bernie explained that this has been supported by his tremendous circle of family, friends, peers and co-workers at the incredible facilities that he has worked.

This is Bernie’s fourth time receiving the MAPGA Teacher & Coach of the Year, he received it in 2004, 2014, and 2022. Najar is also the recipient of the 2011 and 2012 MAPGA Professional Development Award. In 2023, he earned his PGA Master Professional status in Teaching and Coaching, the highest educational designation a PGA of America Member can obtain.

He is married to his wife Jennifer, whose father Dr. Mounir Mady is an avid golfer who even had a par-3 in his backyard, and has a step-daughter Amelia (12).

Jay Dufty has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 PGA Professional of the Year Award for his extensive service to the Section, his support of fellow PGA Professionals, and his commitment to growing the game of golf.

Jay Dufty was born January 23, 1973 in Morris, MN to parents Doug and Karen Dufty and has one sister, Paula. He was first introduced to the game at the age of 7 by his father who was the Head Wrestling Coach and professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Minnesota-Morris. Coach Dufty would teach golf in the summer months to students and Jay would often tag along hitting golf balls alongside the students. His first golf-related job was at Oxbow CC in Fargo, North Dakota as a caddie before working at Moorhead CC under Mr. Larry Murphy through high school years. Jay went to college at New Mexico State University where he earned his degree and PGA Membership in 1998 through the PGA Golf Management Program.

Jay began his professional career at Blueberry Pines Golf Club in 1996 where he stayed until 2000. From 1997-2014 Jay spent time at multiple TPC Courses; Scottsdale, Myrtle Beach, and Potomac at Avenel Farm. In 2015, Jay headed to Washington Golf & CC as Director of Golf and has been there ever since. Throughout his career Jay has earned many awards, 2011 First Tee of Montgomery County “Bob Metz” Service Award, 2014 MAPGA President’s Award, 2014 TPC Network Golf Professional of the Year, 2018 MAPGA Private Club Merchandiser of the Year, and the 2020 MAPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award.

Jay shares that his goal is to be a Golf Ambassador to the members of Washington Golf & CC by delivering the experience each member desires. Noting that not everyone desires the same experience, so having a capable and professional staff to fulfill the desires of the membership is key. Jay's strength is building a team and challenging them to be well rounded golf professionals. He ensures his staff is trusted to execute, create/deliver, and achieve their goals as PGA Professionals should work in lock step to delivering his member’s needs. Under his direction, his team's performance continues to deliver record merchandise sales, record player development numbers, record tournament rounds, and continually adding relevant events to hit all golfers. It was a goal nine years ago to make WGCC highly relevant again in the golfing community while growing the PGA Professional brand. His performance and his team's commitment have made big strides to make this goal a reality.

He believes a big part of being a strong golf professional is working with allied associations to promote the game and create opportunities for others in golf. Working in governance to assist fellow MAPGA Professionals, assisting with the First Tee of DC, or volunteering his time to allied associations and his church all fulfill Jay.
