From The

President

Andy Weissinger, PGA Section President

MAPGA Members and Associates, I want to start my last letter as your Middle Atlantic PGA President by saying thank you! The past two years have been an honor and a privilege serving you in this role. I have enjoyed my time getting to know many of you better than I did when I became an officer six years ago. Together we have pressed into the future doing our best to lead from the front. We set out to make the Middle Atlantic PGA better than it was when I took over from Honorary President Tremblay, just as we did when he took over for Past President Lunn. This was the intention of every one of the 44 President’s before him. Paying tribute and honor to those who have come before us led to many inspiring moments. The legacy laid by our Section’s previous 98 years has left us with a heavy weight of responsibility. It was this responsibility that set us off into many directions to help improve the lives of our Members and Associates. The directions were many because our membership is many. No one way of doing things will work for everyone. I want to thank all of you who have reached out to me over the past two years. I have learned many things from some great PGA of America Golf Professionals. We have had the opportunity to honor several as well along the way. I hope we have provided a few nuggets that have left you inspired to bravely take the next step. The next step is different for all of us, just as it should be in our business. No matter if you are working to develop your career through education, opportunity, and hard work or if you are rededicating yourself to the game you fell in love with years ago or if you are wrapping up a storied career while heading into retirement; one thing is clear, the Middle Atlantic PGA is here for you, and it will be into the future.

The Professional Volume VIII, Issue III Editor: Ben Smith

I have learned that things are always changing. We can’t do anything about yesterday. We can choose to make ourselves better today so that together we can make a better tomorrow. Thank you for allowing me to help lead our Section into a better tomorrow.

The Professional Dear MAPGA Professional, I hope you enjoy this newsletter, with another collection of articles highlighting the performances of your peers, playing or otherwise. Since most of the articles are regarding tournaments, I will address some of the other achievements in my letter. You will have noticed by now that our Fall Meeting will be virtual. After two years of amazing turnout and success, your Board of Directors concluded that this was the best way to serve our members. This will allow you to virtually get caught up on Section matters, and get some great education from the comfort of your own home or office in the Fall. We are looking forward to some great education from Dr. Bob Rotella in the area of Sport Psychology during our Fall Virtual Meeting. Then, you are strongly encouraged to attend the big, in-person get together (Super Meeting) to kick off the spring each year.

From The

ED

One of the emails I sent earlier in the year was to seek your help for our Foundation, PGA REACH Middle Atlantic. I am (fortunately) asked frequently, “What can I do to help?” So, I decided to come up with a list. What can I do to help? I started this as a top-10 list, but there are so many ways you can help, it grew to 15!

Jon Guhl Executive Director

1) Become a HOPE-trained Instructor and work at one or more HOPE sessions 2) Host a PGA HOPE 6-8 week session at your facility 3) Host a HOPE graduate play day at your club. Lakewood CC recently did this with 40 of our graduates and will continue to do this initiative each year (media release) 4) Host a HOPE fundraiser tournament at your club/course 5) Host an MAPGA Junior Tour event at your facility (You get Deferred Comp points!) 6) Play in our PGA REACH Pro-Am (next year will be at Baltimore CC, date TBA) or send a team/find a sponsor 7) On Veteran’s Day (Nov 11), ask for donations from each player at your course for PGA HOPE. $5-$10-$20 per player goes a long way. 8) Donate a product/lessons/rounds of golf for our National Day of Hope (NDOH) fundraiser (Oct 11-Nov 30 online auction/ donation site) 9) Donate money to our NDOH fundraiser (Onecause Page) 10) Play a 100-hole golf marathon, accepting donations for PGA HOPE (Donation Site) 11) Generate and communicate leads regarding donors for REACH activities 12) Create other initiatives at club to donate part of certain day’s revenue back to Foundation 13) Volunteer to work a junior event as rules official or volunteer at Drive, Chip and Putt Qualifiers 14) Spread awareness regarding HOPE and what it is doing for our Veterans (e.g. repost social stories from MAPGA Social Channels). For example, you can post THIS FLYER in your pro shop. 15) Donate gently used clubs to Section to be given out to HOPE participants in need

I want to recognize some MAPGA Professionals for their educational achievements. Shout out to Morgan Bowen, Sean English, Brian Walker, Doug Hamilton, Mark Lynch, Bernie Najar, Andrew Merritt and Michael Thomas, who all received Specialty Certifications this year (in chronological order). Doug & Bernie both continued on to become Certified PGA Professionals (both in Teaching & Coaching). And Bernie rounded out the year getting his Master Professional status. Amazing work by all, and thanks for leading the way for your peers! Warm regards, Jon Executive Director jguhl@pgahq.com

The Middle Atlantic PGA Major Championships: Women’s, Assistant, Senior, and Section Championships are the biggest tournaments of the year. The 2023 Championships did not disappoint when it came to excitement. Three of the four championships were decided by 2 shots of less.

Three of these championships also had national qualifier spots up for grabs. A total of 21 MAPGA members punched their ticket to the PGA National Championships (4 Assistant Championship, 6 Senior Championship, 11 Professional Championship).

Three of the four champions were first-time winners in their respective championships (Hoffman, Schuller, Pieczynski) and Alex Hoffman won his first MAPGA section title. Rick Schuller became just the fifteenth MAPGA member to win the Senior and Section Championships in their career.

Lutherville, MD - Baltimore Country Club - Five Farms East Course hosted the event and proved to be a tough test of golf. Only five players finished under par after three rounds on the 7,011-yard course. 125 players teed off in the first round on Monday. Rick Schuller (Meadowbrook CC) led the way in the first round with an impressive 4-under 66. He made 5 birdies and one bogey and held a one shot lead over Geoff Montross (Farmington CC). There were only 4 under par rounds in round one: Rick Schuller (66), Geoff Montross (67), Grant Strawoet (69), and Bill Fedder (69). The second round played easier than the first, with 10 under par rounds recorded. Greg Pieczynski (George Mason University), Bill Fedder (Glenmore CC), Larkin Gross (Springfield G&CC), and Elliott Wilson (Independence GC) were the big movers with those easier conditions. Pieczynski made a long right-to-left breaking putt on the 9th hole (teed off on 10) to finish his 2-under 68. Along with his first round of 70, that

put him in the clubhouse at 2-under. He was tied for the lead with Bill Fedder after he shot back-to-back 1-under 69’s. Elliot Wilson, Larkin Gross, and Geoff Montross were only one back at 1-under par. Schuller struggled in the second round, shooting 5-over 75. After the second round, the field was cut to the top 46 and ties for the final round. Pieczynski, Fedder, and Wilson were in the final group. The leaderboard was tight with 11 players within 5 shots of the lead. Pieczynski looked like he was going to run away with it after he went out in 4-under 31. He held a 4 shot lead after his opening nine holes. A double bogey on the par-4 11th hole brought Geoff Montross back into the championship. Montross birdied three in a row on holes 12, 13, 14 to get within one shot. A birdie for Pieczynski on the par-3 13th gave him a 2 shot lead headed down the stretch. Montross birdied the long par-3 17th to get within 1. He missed a short birdie putt on the 18th to tie the lead

The Professional and Pieczynksi was able to par his way in to capture his first Section Championship.

A total of 11 MAPGA Professionals qualified for the 2023 PGA Professional Championship that will be held April 28th – May 1st of next year. It will be played at Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco in Frisco, TX. Nine of the eleven qualified from their finish in the MAPGA Section Championship: Greg Pieczynski, Geoff Montross, Bill Fedder, Elliott Wilson, Larkin Gross, Ashley Grier (Yinglings Golf Center), John O’Leary (Trump National GC – DC), Rick Schuller, and Josh Apple (Raspberry Falls GC). Two qualified from other events: Josh Speight (top-20 in 2022 PNC), David Hutsell (past champion – 2011).

Thank you to our sponsors Cadillac, Club Car, Rolex, Titleist, TaylorMade, and Callaway and Baltimore Country Club for hosting!

Davidsonville, MD – Ashley Grier (Yinglings Golf Center) hadn’t won the MAPGA Women’s Championship since she did it three years in a row from 2012-2014. She was determined to change that this year at Renditions Golf Club. She didn’t get off to the start she wanted, with a bogey on the first hole. However, she bounced back quickly and made two straight birdies on 2 and 3. She struggled through the rest of her front nine, making two bogies, a double, and only one birdie to go out in 38. Paige Gross (The Club at Creighton Farms) got off to a much cleaner start as she tried to win her first MAPGA Women’s Championship. She made a birdie and a double bogey to lead by one after nine holes. Grier steadied the ship on the back nine with 2 bogies and 2 birdies to finish with a 2-over 74. Gross couldn’t get it done down the stretch, bogeying her last two holes to shoot 75. This gave Ashley Grier her 4th career MAPGA Women’s Championship.

He didn’t get off to a good start, bogeying his first hole of the championship. Hoffman played great from there, making 5 birdies and 6 pars on his next thirteen. 2 bogies and a birdie on the way in led to a 3-under par 67. However, Larkin Gross (Springfield G&CC) had the low round of the day. The 2021 champion made an eagle, three birdies, and a bogey to shoot a 4-under 66 for a one shot lead after round one. Hoffman didn’t get off to a good start for the second day in a row, bogeying two of his first three holes. Three straight birdies to start his back nine got him to 4-under par. Gross couldn’t take advantage of Hoffman’s slow start as he only made one birdie on his round for a 3-over 73.

JOSH SPEIGHT CAPTURES INAUGURAL SILVERCREST CUP AT HERMITAGE COUNTRY CLUB PGA Director of Instruction at The Club of Vinaterra in New Kent, VA Wins $15,000 First Place Prize, Outdueling 54 PGA Professionals from Across the Region in an Event Sponsored by Silvercrest Asset Management Group to Reward Playing Excellence and Support Local Foundations

Josh Speight, PGA Director of Instruction at The Club of Vinaterra in New Kent, Va., captured the inaugural Silvercrest Cup on October 12th, at Hermitage Country Club in Richmond, Va. The event was the culmination of a season-long tournament series that featured four qualifying events throughout the region for Middle Atlantic PGA Professionals. In winning the Silvercrest Cup, Speight earned a $15,000 prize check, which is one of the most lucrative winner’s checks on the Section’s tournament calendar. In addition to the final purse, each qualifying event included a bonus pool of $5,000, which was shared between each qualifier’s champion and the runnerup. In total, more than 54 MAPGA Professionals participated in the series and competed for $50,000 in total prize money. The Middle Atlantic PGA Section (MAPGA), one of the PGA of America’s forty-one geographical managing entities, and Silvercrest Asset Management Group, an investment advisor providing asset management and family office services to high networth individuals and select institutional investors, partnered in early 2023 to create the Silvercrest Cup. In addition to rewarding the playing excellence of Middle Atlantic PGA Professionals and top amateurs, the series also provided significant donations to local foundations, including the Middle Atlantic PGA Section’s 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, PGA REACH Middle Atlantic.

“The inaugural Silvercrest Cup was a tremendous success in 2023, and we were excited to add this prestigious tournament series to the Middle Atlantic PGA Section lineup of professional golf events,” said Jon Guhl, Executive Director, Middle Atlantic PGA Section. “In addition to congratulating Josh on his victory, we extend our appreciation to Silvercrest Asset Management Group for the opportunities they have provided to our PGA Professionals and Foundations. Silvercrest values and appreciates the dedication and hard work of our PGA Members, which is evident in their investment which not only benefits the players but also our charitable endeavors for the MAPGA.” Silvercrest Chairman and CEO Richard R. Hough III said, “Silvercrest Asset Management Group believes in giving back to the communities we live and work in. It is extremely rewarding to recognize and assist those who share our beliefs. PGA Professionals share the same attributes for success and giving back that Silvercrest believes in.” He continued, “Their dedication to the game of golf and the members of the clubs they unselfishly serve is unmatched in any other sport.” The 54 MAPGA Professionals who participated in the tournament series earned their place in the 2023 Silvercrest Cup final via a points system drawn from their performance in each qualifying event; the top five amateurs from the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) and Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) player of the year lists also competed in the series.

The Professional REACH, the 501(c)(3) charitable foundation of the PGA of America, that introduces golf to Veterans and activeduty military to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. The donation will support 21 PGA HOPE Chapters across the MAPGA Region which serve almost 1,000 Veterans annually. Today, as the PGA of America continues to promote the game of golf as a therapeutic form of rehabilitation, PGA HOPE provides a six- to eight-week developmental curriculum taught by PGA of America Golf Professionals trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency. It is the only adaptive golf program that has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Veterans Affairs, which enables medical staff to refer Veterans to PGA HOPE as a form of therapy. All programs are funded by PGA REACH and supplemented by PGA of America Section foundations, with no cost to all Veterans. “As an already valued partner of the MAPGA, we are deeply grateful that Silvercrest Asset Management Group has extended its support for our valuable Veterans golf programming through this generous $20,000 donation,” said Jon Guhl, Executive Director, Middle Atlantic PGA. “The PGA of America is very proud of the impact PGA HOPE has made, as it’s not just another program to introduce this great game, but a program using golf to change lives, and in some instances, save the lives of our Veterans. Thanks to Silvercrest we can now enhance our support for Veterans throughout the Middle Atlantic Region.” In addition to the MAPGA’s 21 Chapters, PGA HOPE is currently being offered at more than 350 locations in the U.S., across 46 States and 40 PGA of America Sections. In 2022, the program positively impacted 7,500 Veterans; the 2023 goal is 11,000 Veterans served. More than 2,500 PGA of America Golf Professionals have received specialized training in using adaptive equipment and instructing Veterans.

BRENDAN MCGRATH MAKES CLEAN SWEEP OF THE SENIOR STATE OPENS Wins the Senior Open of Virginia and Maryland Senior Open SENIOR OPEN OF VIRGINIA Written by Chris Lang of the VSGA Midlothian, VA - MAPGA Professional Brendan McGrath, PGA (Trump National GC) sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole on Tuesday at Independence Golf Club, helping him become the fourth two-time winner of the Senior Open of Virginia. One of those two-time champs — amateur Buck Brittain — had a chance to match with a 6-foot birdie of his own on the second playoff hole but missed, clinching the 18th playing of the Senior Open for McGrath.

his approach first, with the shot landing 6 feet short of the hole. McGrath’s approach was a little long and right, but hitting first, he drained the putt to put the pressure squarely on Brittain, who couldn’t convert. The next five players on the leaderboard were amateurs. Ron Totton, Scott Bemberis and Jeffrey Klatt tied for third at 4-under 140. Tony Good and Kevin South tied for sixth at 3-under 141. Professionals Glenn McCloskey and Schuller tied for 8th at 2-under 142.

“You’ve got to make those if you want to win in a playoff,” Brittain told McGrath as the two shook hands on the 10th green at Independence. McGrath joins, Brittain, Rick Schuller, and Dave Pulk as two-time Senior Open champions, and McGrath’s victory extended the streak of professional victories in the event to three. McGrath won in 2021, and Schuller won in 2022. Matt Sughrue was the last amateur to win, claiming the title in 2020. Brittain was low amateur in the championship for the first time. Both players posted two-day aggregate totals MARYLAND SENIOR OPEN of 6-under 138, with McGrath going 68-70 and Brittain going 70-68. Written by the Maryland State Golf Association McGrath forced the playoff with an outstanding approach shot on 18. Trailing Brittain — who was in the clubhouse — by a stroke, McGrath hit his approach from about 120 yards out to inside of a foot, and the ball nearly trickled in for a walk-off eagle. He tapped in, and the players returned to 18 for the first playoff hole. McGrath ran into trouble off the tee, hitting into the left fairway bunker. Brittain found the fairway and then the green, leaving about 12 feet for birdie. McGrath’s shot out of the bunker caught the left edge of the green, leaving him a monstrous birdie putt that he nearly holed. He tapped in for his par, and Brittain missed his birdie look to the send the playoff to a second hole. Both players found the fairway on No. 10. Brittain hit
