MANAGING EDITOR’S NOTE

We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment. ” –– MARGARET MEAD

Welcome to map magazine’s 144th issue. The ‘Eco’ Issue is a favourite of mine, particularly as we get to immerse ourselves in the world of eco and try to make sense of what is going on with this topic. The landscape has without question definitely changed! Whilst the topic of ‘climate change’ barely seems to raise a whisper these days and the planet continues to lose species at alarming rates, we can be thankful that there are still many heroes doing their part for the planet. One of these is the amazing Michael Ableman (kindly suggested by Robert Pekin of Food Connect). Michael is the founder of the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens, a non-profit

organisation based on one of the oldest and most diverse organic farms in southern California. His interview with Frances Frangenheim is definitely worth a read. What struck me quite powerfully were his words of wisdom: “It’s better to love than to be right. It doesn’t really matter what I’ve said or what I’ve written, it’s how I’ve said it and how I’ve written it and who I am in this amazingly complex network of humans. Have I loved or have I just thought? You can do both. I want to do both. But it’s better to love than to be right.” Maybe more could be done for the environment if these words were put into practice ... remember to dream.

EDITOR’S MEMO

––

Our August issue marks our seventh annual Eco issue, and how things have changed since our first Eco issue in 2006! What I found particularly heartening about this edition is that the dreamers we interviewed have integrated sustainable practices into their work and lifestyles to a point where it’s no longer a conscious effort. They dream of a world, which hopefully isn’t too far away, where such practices are simply common sense and a part of everyday life. Amongst the eco savants we’ve profiled this month are Elisabeth Harvey, designer of the sustainable yet sexy Nico Underwear; Melbourne architect Jeremy McLeod, who envisions a world without cars; and Michael Ableman, who traverses the globe extolling the wonders of sustainable agriculture. May their words inspire you to dream of an even better world to come.

Mikki Brammer EDITOR

For those who try to incorporate an ethical philosophy into their beauty habits, there often lacks clarity as to the exact ingredients included in some products. The Environmental Working Group has created the Skin Deep initiative, which is a database that features online safety profiles for cosmetics and personal-care products. Analysing the ingredients and processes used in the creation of the products, Skin Deep is intended to fill in the gaps when it comes to the conundrum of truly ethical beauty. @ www.ewg.org/skindeep

Considered one of the United States’ first environmentalists, George Perkins Marsh dreamed of educating the world about the precarious relationship between humans and nature, in an effort to prevent deforestation. His book Man and Nature became one of the earliest-known literary works on ecology. A multi-linguist, George was also appointed by Abraham Lincoln as the United States envoy to Italy.

INVITES YOU TO ... MOONRISE KINGDOM With an eccentric line-up of characters, beautiful filmography, and a story that explores the idea of innocent love, Moonrise Kingdom bears all the trademarks of a Wes Anderson film. Set in the summer of 1965, the film follows two 12-year-old children, Suzy and Sam, who share a desire to run away. After a clandestine exchange of letters, the love-struck duo hatches a plan to run off into the wilderness of their island hometown, relying on Sam’s Scout skills to survive. The escape causes of flurry of anxiety in a town that has little experience in dealing with such drama. For your chance to attend map magazine’s special screening at Dendy Portside on August 27 at 6:30 pm, visit www.mapmagazine.com.au and follow the ‘Readers Premiere’ links. 112 lucky entrants will win a double pass. PRINT // FURNISHINGS A positive side to the habit of accumulating old newspapers is that you keep a snapshot of history to be delved into in decades to come. But then there’s the matter of where to keep the mounting piles of old broadsheets during the years in between. Designer Charles Kaisin has found one such method, creating the Newspaper Extendable Bench. Using a layering technique with glue to create a material as strong as wood, Charles recycled old newspaper to craft an intriguing piece of furniture with a sleek aesthetic that could signal the way of home furnishings in the future. @ www.charleskaisin.com

WATER // DESIGN Part of the joy of owning pot plants is the fact that you get to choose a lovely watering can with which to care for them. While some may favour the rustic surface of an old tin watering can, and others the ease and durability of a brightly hued plastic number, those with a shrewd design eye will most likely lean towards the Gro. Norwegian design mind Hallgeir Homstvedt teamed up with Established & Sons to create this svelte watering can, which made its debut at the Milan Furniture Fair this year. The name ‘Gro’ comes from the Norwegian words for ‘heal’ and ‘grow’. @ www.hallgeirhomstvedt.com

The aesthetic beauty of cultural tradition can often become the inspiration for modern objects. Taking the centuries-old concept of the Korean grill and applying it to contemporary eco-friendly furniture, the Dami series by Seung Yong Song is composed of different baskets and covers that can be adapted to create a variety of objects such as a lamp, lounge, footstool and side table. Embodying the same durability as its original inspiration, Dami is made using a combination of a new eco-friendly material called Valchromat and a CNC processing technique. @ www.seungyongsong.com

The saying “between wind and water” implies that something is in its most vulnerable state. In a creative context, designer Mariah Rich sees art as being the most vulnerable form of expression. Her handmade accessories, known as Btwn Wind + Water, use natural materials such as leather, stones and metals where possible. Amongst the beautiful wares are handstitched leather totes, charmingly soft clutches and necklaces featuring pyrite stones (which are said to enhance communication and honesty, and provide emotional and physical protection). @ www.btwnwindandwater.com

LEA PLU • Pre

A BEAUTIFUL FUSION OF LIGHT AND NATURE

A wander through a beautiful garden, surrounded by cheerful flowers, is an experience that has long inspired poetry, artworks, songs and novels. For installation artist and lighting designer Bruce Munro, it proved to be the perfect canvas to showcase the beauty of nature itself. In his first large-scale solo show, Bruce converted the 9.3 ha of Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, USA, into a wondrous artwork composed of seven outdoor and two indoor installations, as well as a collection of sculptural works. Ensconced within their natural surroundings, the outdoor installations mimic aspects of nature. Used CDs float delicately atop one of the lakes to represent waterlilies in ‘Waterlilies in Bloom’, while thousands of LED lights perched on stems like dandelions create

the ‘Field of Light’. Meanwhile, the ‘Arrow Spring’ on the flower-walk lawn is made up of 328 copper fibreoptic ‘firefly’ stems that are planted into a raised garden bed with salvia plants. The plants of the spring come alive when illuminated via LEDs in 16 oil-lamp spheres with an internal lens assembly. You can also take a wander through the ‘Forest of Light’, consisting of a 20,000stem field of glass bulbs resembling blooming flowers planted along a 750 m pathway. For Bruce, the artistic challenge was creating works that ‘spoke’ to the landscape but also enhanced the natural beauty of the gardens themselves. In addition, he focused on ensuring minimal impact on the environment, including the use of lowenergy material, while also being sensitive to the structural layout of the gardens.

What is your profession? I am a designer of furniture, lighting, graphics and product. What training or qualifications do you need to fill this role? I have

antigravity aerial yoga instructor/flight skool

instructor and master developer for AntiGravity Australia and New Zealand. What training or qualifications do you need to fill this role? To become a level 1 certified instructor, you need to complete the AGY FUNdamentals and AG Flying Fitness courses before sitting a written and a practical exam. After the course, you also need to complete a minimum 50-hour apprenticeship. What are the key skills and responsibilities of the role? I instruct basic to intermediate suspension fitness training using moves derived from the practices of yoga, fitness, Pilates, calisthenics, gymnastics, dance and aerial arts. How did you get involved in your profession? Through injury – I suffered a series of serious lower-back injuries and surgery was looming. I chanced by the AntiGravity team when I was in America and the rest, as they say, is history. Could you break into the industry in other ways? In the past you had to go to New York City for training, but I am hosting training courses in October. What do you hope to achieve within your industry? I’d like to make this technique available to people in all states and major centres. Are you in the industry for the long term? Yes! It’s such a versatile and therapeutic technique. What advice would you give someone looking to emulate your success? Get knocked down 20 times and

get up 21 times, or as my teacher would say: “If you can’t, you must.” Did you always think you would be in this role? Definitely not. As a kid I thought I would be a pilot. What was your first paid job? Cleaning dishes. What would you love to do if you weren’t in this role? I have no idea, because I love this role. I would probably visit and learn from other movement specialists. What inspires you? People who put themselves on the line for what they believe in without wanting any reward. Who is your rolemodel? Scott Sonnon. Despite many limitations, he became a world champion of sambo, jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts. What are your words of wisdom? “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” – Alan Watts.

completed a Master of Design (Product Design), Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts – Graphic Design) and I’m also a member of the Design Institute of Australia. What are the key skills and responsibilities of the role?

Designing work for the Wambamboo range of furniture and lighting that creates discourse about environmental and sociological issues. How did you get involved in your profession? Through persistence, a design-based education and a deep interest in what my peers were doing in all creative fields. Could you break into the industry in other ways? Yes, but I’d recommend a design-related educational foundation. An appreciation of art history and drawing is fundamental for anyone in the creative industries. What do you hope to achieve within your industry? To highlight inherent issues related to mass-production and the oversupply of ubiquitous products that impair our sociological and environmental quality of life. Are you in the industry for the long term? My interests and skills have allowed me to work in many different design disciplines. I see this as being a constant and the reason I’m still driven to participate in the design arena. What advice would

Think about how to differentiate yourself and whether what you are doing is for selfless or selfish reasons. Did you always think you would be in this role?

I always leaned towards a design-orientated career. What was your first paid job? I was a paper delivery boy. What would you love to do if you weren’t in this role?

Scuba diving around the world and removing plastic waste from the oceans. What inspires you? People who achieve a lot with very little. Who is your rolemodel? My father and grandfather. Both were driven and independent thinkers who created their own opportunities. What are your words of wisdom? Good design should last forever, but needn’t last forever in the environment.

CLANDESTINE // PICNIC When planning a dinner party in Paris in 1988, François Pasquier managed a growing invite list by asking his guests to meet in a large public space dressed in white. As word of the gathering spread, an annual pop-up Parisian event, Diner en Blanc, was born. Now held in 20 cities, Diner en Blanc will take place in Brisbane on September 1. Guests are informed of the dinner location just prior to the event and, in addition to dressing in white, they must also bring along a picnic basket of their favourite foods. Visit the website to register for an invite. @ www.dinerenblanc.info

ETHICAL // ACCESSORIES While many fashion purchases are made subconsciously, when you pause to consider your wardrobe as a whole, what greets you is a sartorial statement of your personal essence. But for those who prefer to don attire of an eco-friendly nature, creating an individual style can be a challenge. Harmonising the balance between fashion and the environment is local jewellery label Ruby Olive. The range of jewellery is made using materials sourced from ethical and sustainable sources. WASABI // SURPRISE While we all know the risks of gambling, sometimes the thrill of the game can be a heady tonic. A gambling game of the culinary kind, the Sushi Roulette at Wagaya will spare your pockets of heartache, but the same cannot be guaranteed for your tastebuds. The roulette is a seemingly modest platter of salmon sushi, but one piece is loaded with wasabi. Enjoy the roulette with friends and watch carefully for the moment when the unlucky member of your party takes their first bite. As a gentle puff of wasabi ignites the palate, their facial expression will tell a tragic tale of poor fortune. @ www.wagaya.com.au

Do you opt for a dress-up theme or keep the dress code cocktail? Should a sit-down meal or just appetisers be served? And how do you convince family not to bring along embarrassing photos? Part of planning the perfect soiree is finding an ideal venue to complement the occasion. Hotel Urban Brisbane has a number of spaces to host events ranging from birthdays to weddings and staff functions. The newly completed Green Room creates a chic and intimate atmosphere while, upstairs, The Loft offers panoramic city views and plenty of space for a dance floor. @ www.hotelurban.com.au

DIGITAL // GARDENING Indulging a green thumb is a dream harboured by many urban dwellers who are often thwarted by a lack of time to actually care for a garden. For the aspiring hydroponic gardener, Bitponics is like your personal gardening assistant, helping you to not only monitor your seedlings, but also simplify the process. After you inform the device about your setup and what plants you’re growing, it connects to a website and then provides you with a personalised growing plan that tells you how to achieve the best possible results. Sensors in your garden also send readings to your account on the Bitponics website. @ www.bitponics.com

DISCOVER: //www.sustainable-fashion.com SURVIVAL // FASHION Though a walk through the wilderness may be the perfect way to get back to nature, those who lack an innate sense of direction can find themselves in a spot of bother when wandering aimlessly through a forest. Designer Joey Roth has paired with sustainable eyewear creator Shwood to craft a limited-edition compass pendant, which, if it doesn’t help you get home, will at least give you the air of an intrepid adventurer. Made from laminated maple and East Indian rosewood, the design is inspired by the iconic Francis Barker survival compass and is sure to blend in with the wardrobes of most urban adventurers (even if you never intend to set foot in the wilderness). @ www.joeyroth.com

underwear designer

ELISABETH HARVEY Young Brisbane designer Elisabeth Harvey launched her fledgling sustainable underwear label, Nico Underwear, in January 2012. Like a true entrepreneur, Elisabeth saw a gap in the underwear market and decided to fill it. Described as an in-between label, Nico is playful but not super sexy, and simple but not boring. A photographer by trade, Elisabeth hasn’t let a lack of fashion experience stop her from chasing her dream. She says she is fortunate to live in an era where knowledge is at your fingertips. And she lives and breathes her advice to others: “Make the most of the opportunities you’ve got.”

Unlike many in search of a career change, Elisabeth Harvey didn’t launch her Nico Underwear fashion label to escape her day job. Since graduating from the Queensland College of Art with a photography degree in 2006, she has relished working as a freelance photographer across architecture, fashion and interiors contracts, as well as documentary projects. She is clearly talented, being nominated as a finalist in many industry awards including, most recently, the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards and the 2009 Prix de la Photographie Paris. Elisabeth launched Nico for the creative challenge. “I was craving something with a little more creative control where I could be more expressive. And basically I wanted to make all the choices rather than answering to someone else,” she laughs of her independent streak. She began tossing around business ideas, but none stuck. In 2009, while holidaying in Norway (where her partner is from), she had a lightbulb moment. “It sounds cheesy, but I walked past an underwear store and went – ‘Oh yeah’,” Elisabeth recalls. “And when you know, you just know. It was one of those instinctual things.” Elisabeth realised that she loved cute bras and undies, but had a tricky time finding garments that suited her persona. “There’s this really padded, same-same, sparkly, lacy stuff, which is great, but it

20 map magazine

THE ECO ISSUE AUGUST12

mm144-p20-21-LOCL-xx.indd 20

doesn’t suit everyone,” she explains of one end of the underwear garment spectrum. “And then there’s this everyday practical sort of stuff, which is also great. But at the time there wasn’t the in-between underwear that’s sexy but not in a traditional over-the-top kind of way.” After chatting to friends and finding many experienced the same underwear dilemma, Elisabeth decided to fill the gap in the market. She began designing her Nico label, which she describes as “unique, style-driven lingerie to wear every day.” Over two years from 2009, she took crash courses in sewing and business, and researched options for sustainable fabrics and ethical manufacturing in Australia. Elisabeth is thrilled that her hard work is paying off as customers snap up her garments through her online store and retail stockists, including Heidi Go Seek in Fortitude Valley, Ra Ra Superstar in Paddington and The Happy Cabin in West End. Her pieces are also sold through online lingerie boutique, Assiere.com. Elisabeth says she was committed to making Nico a sustainable label. All Nico garments are manufactured in Australia and the fabrics are sustainable and organic. Elisabeth is also planning to seek accreditation with Ethical Clothing Australia – an organisation that ensures that workers receive fair wages and work conditions. “I personally believe in sustainability,

so I don’t think I could start this business in any other way,” she says of her decision to make Nico eco-aware. “In the future, we’re all going to be heading down this path whether we want to or not, so for me it really made sense to be ahead of the trend and investigate it and be as much a part of it as I could be.” Organic bamboo fabrics will feature in the second collection. “We were lucky with this one because it is a sustainable fabric and is produced in ways that are a lot less environmentally damaging than cotton,” Elisabeth notes of bamboo’s benefits. “But it’s also this really gorgeous fabric to wear that’s well suited to underwear – so it’s an easy choice.” Elisabeth acknowledges that production costs are higher when using sustainable fabrics and manufacturing in Australia, but it’s a hurdle she’s willing to jump. “The key for us is to find an educated audience who appreciates those factors and is willing to pay a little bit more than some other mass-produced brands. These days it is getting less expensive … I think that’s where the industry is headed.” Elisabeth says she stumbled into fashion. “When I was a kid I wanted to be a psychiatrist. I know – that’s bizarre,” she laughs of her childhood dream. “It doesn’t really make sense, but I think I just liked talking to people and finding out how they think.” In her teens she became fascinated with making films and saved her earnings

from a summer job to buy a camera. Within the first year of her film degree she realised that the study was killing the passion, so she pursued photography instead, which she admits is a tough industry to crack. “It takes time to develop a style and client base. It’s hard, but not impossible.” Her greatest challenge is playing the “struggling artist” card however, she never considers giving up. “I really wanted this career and this lifestyle so I just make it happen,” she shares of her motivation for starting Nico and freelancing in photography. “It’s a long-term thing. Because at what point do you say: ‘I’ve made it’? I can’t ever imagine saying that. It’s ongoing. It’s a struggle in many ways, but you have to enjoy the journey and I do. It’s fun.” Elisabeth believes it’s an exciting time for small labels in the Australian fashion industry. “There are lots of small brands doing great things and challenging the traditional ways of retailing, which involved big brands having the monopoly on the market. I’m excited to be part of this new era of fashion.” Her advice for others who are considering launching new

business ventures is to go for it. “There’s going to be 10-million roadblocks and many times when you say ‘This is impossible’,” she notes. “But it’s not. You can just do it. And I almost feel we are so lucky in this generation with the country we live in and the opportunities we’ve got, so don’t waste it. Make the most of the opportunities you’ve got.” Elisabeth is working on her second Nico collection, set to launch in summer 2012/2013. Like the essence of summer, it will be colourful, fresh and fun. Designing the second time around is proving a daunting process and Elisabeth says she can empathise with what new bands must feel when striving to create a second album that betters the first. “There’s that follow-up expectation and you’re thinking ‘Can I do it again?’” Elisabeth laughs. “Do you go on a totally different path or do you keep it the same? It’s been interesting.” When things get tough, Elisabeth has wise words for herself. “Often I have to step back and take a deep breath and let things settle. It’s always a good technique when things get a bit scary … A deep breath goes a long way.”

Each piece is made using the least possible amount of materials and resources, and is intended to last its wearer’s lifetime. The scrub fuses frangipani and jasmine with a ylang ylang and sandalwood base (and a hint of green anise notes), and is bound to leave your skin fresh.

DIGNITY //

The process of weighing oneself first thing in the morning can be a painful one for many people. Adding some dignity to the process, designer Weiche Wu has created The Weight Recorder. Reflecting weight fluctuations in a less clinical manner, the scale makes a graphic mark rather than recording a statistical number. You can then view the changes over a period of time, or even a lifetime, as a graph.

Archives Fine Books literature Losing yourself in literature is a lovely way to wander. Falling into a book can be a great way to unwind or to actively adventure into other worlds. Archives Fine Books is home to a million volumes and is a great place to lose yourself in half an hour (or half a day) of dreamily browsing the aisles of towering shelves. As the biggest and the oldest secondhand bookstore in the city, Archives Fine Books has collected an unrivalled assortment of books on every topic. Situated right in the CBD, Archives seems to be a world away from the traffic-laden streets outside, remaining an inner-city retreat to its visitors. Stepping in off the street is like moving into another world where you can experience the now rare scent of old paper, leather and fabric as you move amongst the mountains of books. Not just dedicated to satisfying the enthusiast, the store caters for those who are after an affordable paperback, or simply looking for a surprise good

read. Genres multiply and give birth to more genres, from philosophy to fantasy, sport to politics, and knitting to true crime. If it is history that you are after, or owning a piece of it, take a peek at the oldest book in store – a 1633 edition of Sir Phillip Knight’s Arcadia. For those who have a bookshelf that is bursting at the seams, Archives Fine Books also buys books and makes exchanges, regardless of the size of the collection. For the first time in 28 years, Archives Fine Books will be changing its business hours, giving customers a chance to browse later into the evening – for more information, see the Facebook page.

JEREMY MCLEOD While many would refer to Jeremy McLeod as a sustainable architect, the man himself is loath to take on such a title. You see, for him, the sustainable aspects of his practice – Breathe Architecture – are simply a matter of common sense. From a tiny studio sitting snugly in a laneway in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick, Jeremy and his team of seven (plus dog Daisy) spend their days applying this common sense to commercial and residential projects across the city. And their hope is that one day their philosophy will be so commonplace, there’ll be no need to distinguish sustainable architecture from any other.

My first childhood dream was … to be a scuba diver. But then at some point I became obsessed with building bridges and decided I wanted to be an architect. It wasn’t until I was halfway through my first year of uni that I realised that structural engineers built bridges. My parents … moved around a lot, so I’ve lived in lots of parts of New South Wales and Victoria. They’ve always been political activists – left wing and interested in social justice and environmental sustainability. They’re both bleeding-heart social workers, so I couldn’t help but have a social conscience! I vote the same as them and I think the same as them. When I graduated from high school … I moved down to Tasmania. I’d seen a guy present the University of Tasmania’s School of Environmental Design undergraduate course and he was inspirational, so I knew that’s where I wanted to go. It was the first university in Australia to offer environmental and sustainable design, and these days there are some hot young kids coming out of there. I began Breathe Architecture … because I was working for a bigger architecture firm and I was a little bit tired of working on multi-storey structures with no openable windows. I decided that every room that I worked on would always have an openable window – that’s where the name ‘Breathe’ came from. When I first started ... if you Googled

30 map magazine

THE ECO ISSUE AUGUST12

mm144-p30-31-NTNL-xx.indd 30

‘sustainable architecture in Melbourne’, you would come up with seven architects’ names. If you Googled it now, it would stretch on to infinity. The market has definitely grown in that field and there’s so much more on offer for people. The people who come to us … used to just be people who were really interested in sustainability. And while we still have those clients, other people come to us now because of our commercial or hospitality projects. They don’t necessarily understand the sustainable aspects, they just like the way it feels. When I tell people what I do … I just say that we’re a small design studio. But, the fact is, the practice is responsible to the environment and we try to be socially responsible too. We do try to trim down the people who call us, so that when they do they know that being responsible is non-negotiable for us. When we design a house … we don’t design to six stars – we design to eight stars. We say that they have to have solar hot water, double glazing and two layers of insulation. They also have to have a rainwater tank plumbed back into the toilets and the washing machine and the garden. And, of course, they have to have passive solar design, meaning the building has to be orientated so that the sun comes in during winter and is excluded in summer. The materials we use … are always local where possible and we try to specify

recycled materials where we can. We also try not to specify aluminium or a lot of ceramic tiles because of the carbon miles attached to them. What I did notice … is that, in 2006, when John Howard finally admitted that climate change was real, we stopped having to argue with people about having water tanks and double glazing and things like that. Everyone just accepted that they had to do it and there was this really weird shift in our clients. When we needed to cut costs, it became about the expensive materials and finishes, not about the fundamental sustainable elements. Now, with the carbon tax ... we have noticed people not being as keen to do things. But I don’t think the carbon tax is even enough and if it does affect my business so be it – I’m more than happy to put my hand in my pocket. We run a carbon-neutral office anyway and we all ride to work, so the impact on us is going to be very small. Our current office … was once the delivery stable where all the fruit and vegetables were kept for the grocer out the front. When we first moved into the building in 2005, there was just me and two other architects. We just insulated it and put some windows in, but we didn’t install any air conditioning because we decided that, since we wouldn’t specify it for our residential clients, we couldn’t specify it for

ourselves. So when it gets hot, we really feel it! But it just means we have to shift our behaviour so that we start earlier in summer around 7:00 am and finish by 3:00 pm – although the guys here are so hardworking that they start early and then stay and work through the heat! The idea is that you just need to shift your behaviour or expectations about a building, rather than changing the environment of the building. The big thing for us at the moment … is a city without cars. Melbourne is obsessed with cars, but we’re very interested in designing buildings for people and communities instead of cars. We think that if you stop providing people with carparks, they’ll stop driving. So we’ve got all these buildings we’re designing with no parking, but places for bicycles inside them. One of the greatest challenges for me … was coming back to Melbourne from Tasmania and not coming from money or starting a practice with two other partners. There’s often those three-partner firms made up of two architects and one person who has a lot of money and family connections. For us, starting a practice with no connections

and just having to build it up one project at a time was the hardest aspect. My biggest inspiration … in recent times, is Duncan Jones, who is David Bowie’s son and the director of the film, Moon. He made that film for five-million dollars! He’s really inspiring at the moment because we do a lot of stuff on a low budget and you just have to be incredibly innovative to make it all happen, but in the end it’s really worth it. If you don’t have a purpose ... you don’t have something to try to achieve in your life, and it’s all worthless. A friend of mine says that you just have to let the world collapse in on itself – you can’t fight it and who cares. But, for me, I know it’s incredibly frustrating, but if I didn’t care about what we do every day – fighting bureaucracy to make beautiful buildings and spaces and bring some good to the community – I wouldn’t bother getting out of bed in the morning. I find peace ... by having a coffee with my wife for 15 minutes each morning. That’s my Zen time. My wisdom for the world ... would be paraphrasing someone else, but it would simply be: ‘Do something you love.’

HASSELL STUDIO

36 WARRY STREET, FORTITUDE VALLEY T. 3914 4000 www.hassellstudio.com

When renovating and updating an older building, simply encasing structures in a clean layer of plaster can lock away the space’s original charm. Upon entering the open-plan offices of architecture firm HASSELL Studio, you become aware of the history that pervades the rejuvenated space through raw brickwork, high ceilings and, most notably, the old baker’s ovens that sit behind desks laden with paperwork and modern gadgets. Together, these elements combine harmoniously to tell the tale of the building’s journey from bakery to contemporary office space. Standing as a testament to HASSELL Studio’s commitment to sustainable architecture, the site of the former Keating’s Bread

Factory was stripped back to its original form during the renovation process, in order to preserve the structure and integrity of the space. New additions blend almost seamlessly with the original space, creating an environment that pays homage to the beauty of raw materials. Nature is also welcomed indoors – sunlight spreads through the office, while communal areas spill out onto a lush outdoor courtyard that stands at the heart of the building – and underpinning the design philosophy is a commitment to sustainability. Old materials were recycled during the renovation, natural ventilation and lighting are used where possible, air conditioners are turned off in winter and rainwater is harvested.

NEW FARM NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE COMMUNITY GARDEN 967 BRUNSWICK STREET, NEW FARM T. 3358 5600 www.newfarmneighbourhood.org

Our innate dependence on nature is an undeniable connection that instinctively lures us to walk barefoot over a lush patch of grass, linger in a fragrant rose garden, and sink our teeth into a plump strawberry plucked from a fertile vegetable patch. Bringing the joy of nature to those without a garden to call their own, the Community Garden at the New Farm Community Centre is an organic garden for the public to enjoy. Prior to its transformation into a garden, the long and narrow strip was a driveway that often sat unused. Following a grant from the Government in 2009, work on a new garden commenced in a collaboration between New Farm Neighbourhood Centre and the 139

Club. Upon its completion, the garden had provided eight underprivileged community members with practical skills, a regular income during construction and a Certificate III in Horticulture. Nowadays, volunteer members of the community tend the garden on Monday mornings using permaculture principles. The garden consists primarily of edible plants, including chilli trees, eggplant bushes, herbs and lettuce. Members of the community are welcome to join the gardening group on Monday mornings, or simply drop by to enjoy the space. The centre also helps people access housing, provides a community office and arranges social events.

Nissan LEAF environment Looking towards the future can be a scary concept, especially when it comes to the environment. There’s no doubt each member of society can contribute to improving the outcome of the natural world, and pave the way for generations to come. In an effort to make that change, Nissan has created the Nissan LEAF – a car powered by 100% electricity. As an electric vehicle, this means that the Nissan LEAF uses no petrol and produces no carbon dioxide or nasty tailpipe emissions. While home to an eco-friendly source of power, the car is just as powerful as what you may be accustomed to, with easy rapid acceleration ensuring a smooth ride. Keeping the Nissan LEAF charged is easy and can be done overnight in the garage. Drivers are also kept aware of the car’s needs through the clever incorporation of a twin digital meter. This device provides information on how to drive efficiently, as well as the battery’s charging and regeneration status. The eco-edge of the Nissan LEAF

extends far beyond it being an electric car and is also an integral part of the car’s bodywork. Using specific objectives to achieve a car that reduces environmental impact at every stage of its creation, Nissan has incorporated a number of green features into its interiors, such as the use of recycled materials and ecofriendly fabrics. The Nissan LEAF is still home to all the mod cons required in cars of this day and age – think cruise control, luggage room, an electric shift and a parking assistance colour screen. With its sleek aerodynamic design, the Nissan LEAF is a sustainable vehicle, suitable for business or for the urban lifestyle.

sustainable pioneer

MICHAEL ABLEMAN

As a farmer and educator, Michael Ableman spends most of his year surrounded by veggie gardens and orchards, forests and lakes. He’s also an author, photographer, social enterprise founder and public speaker. As one of America’s gurus on sustainable agriculture – having founded an urban agriculture farm and education centre in 1981 and devoting the past 40 years to farming – Michael has plenty of knowledge to share and a thirst for learning. His dream is to achieve balance and peace in his life and to keep inspiring others to participate in the wonders of growing food.

With his wife and two sons, Michael Ableman, 58, lives on the thriving natural oasis of Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada. From Vancouver, it is merely a 90-minute ferry ride or a short flight. The Ablemans’ home is Foxglove Farm, a 50-ha organic working farm and eco-forestry project nestled amongst creeks, forests and pastures. The property borders the untouched Maxwell Lake and sits in a sensitive eco system, which Michael says brings both “wonderful opportunities and responsibilities” to protect and preserve the area. While Foxglove Farm keeps him busy (Michael jokes it runs him rather than the other way around), it is also the place he finds peace when he’s looking for it. “We border a beautiful, pristine lake so I can walk to it in 15 minutes,” he explains of the serene spot he likes to retreat to when at home. “I go out and swim and sit on the shore.” The farm is also the site of The Centre for Art, Ecology and Agriculture, an education hub Michael founded to model the exciting economic and social connections between farming, land stewardship, food, the arts and community wellbeing. Recent speakers at the centre include American farmer and philosopher Joel Salatin, famously featured in the Food Inc. documentary, and Wendy Johnson, a Buddhist meditation teacher and organic-gardening mentor. The centre is based on the knowledge

Michael developed during 20 years of organic farming in southern California, where he founded the Centre for Urban Agriculture in 1981. Established as a non-profit organisation, the iconic farm grew to host up to 5000 people per year for tours, classes, traineeships and festivals, and became regarded as a model for small-scale and urban agriculture. When Michael isn’t working on Foxglove Farm, he travels the world delivering talks and keynotes to inspire others to participate in urban and sustainable agriculture. He is currently writing his fourth book, which will focus on the impermanence of land and our role as custodians to nurture and preserve it. Michael is also spending time in Vancouver working on what he considers his greatest achievement. SOLEfood Farm is one of the largest urban agriculture social enterprises in North America. Michael co-founded the project in 2009, with wunderkind farmer and educator Seann J. Dory, to provide jobs and training for people from Vancouver’s poor Downtown Eastside neighbourhood. SOLEfood trains participants to install and manage small production farms on leased urban lots. Michael proudly notes that, to date, there are 25 farmers working across five city farms. “Seeing the individuals we have brought on and seeing the power of this work – of working with the land, of growing food, of providing nourishment

for someone else – the power of that in changing people’s lives is unbelievable,” Michael gushes. “It sounds like a cliche but it’s not. We have seen remarkable results with people who have had a really tough go in life. And that to me is so satisfying. That project is really hard, but it’s worth it when I hear those stories and see what’s happening with people.” Michael admits he stumbled into farming. His childhood dream was to pursue visual art and photography, which he studied briefly after high school. He joined an agrarian commune at age 18 and began exploring the world of agriculture. Farming was clearly in his blood. While writing and photodocumenting for his most recent book, Fields of Plenty: A Farmer’s Journey in Search of Real Food and the People Who Grow It, Michael learnt the story of his great grandparents, and grandparents, who fled persecution in Russia to start new lives in America. They helped instigate many farms in Delaware in the United States. “They were driven to use agriculture as a way to motivate people forward and improve other peoples’ lives,” Michael marvels. He admits his philosophy regarding urban agriculture has evolved over his 40 years of farming. In his twenties he believed urban agriculture could help solve two burning issues affecting low-income communities in America –

from its wings. Or watching a seed germinate. I’ve done that a million times, but it’s still unbelievable. That’s what keeps you going …” Nevertheless, a recent back injury prompted Michael to ask himself big questions like: “Where is the most powerful impact of my life right now? Where can I reach the most people in a way that’s not just entertainment? And what are the physical limitations of my body as it grows older?” The answers pointed to slowing down and dedicating time to teaching, writing and inspiring people, as well as spending more quality time with his wife and two sons, aged 30 and 10. “I need to take more time to be still so that the nature of my teaching is well grounded.” Michael shares some wise words he heard recently as song lyrics. “It’s better to love than to be right,” he recites. “I think that’s my message to myself … It doesn’t really matter what I’ve said or what I’ve written, it’s how I’ve said it and how I’ve written it and who I am in this amazingly complex network of humans. Have I loved or have I just thought? You can do both. I want to do both. But it’s better to love than to be right.”

joblessness and a limited availability of fresh food. He still trusts this is achievable, although he no longer believes it’s possible to feed cities entirely from urban farms. “We need a much more comprehensive and integrated conversation around urban agriculture,” Michael urges. “The conversation has to change to talk more about what is the appropriate role for all the different regions where food is being produced – urban farms, peri-urban farms and rural farms – and how we integrate these in a way that makes sense ecologically, socially and otherwise.” Michael believes the greatest global challenge for agriculture is a lack of public participation. His aim is to encourage more people to get involved by physically growing food themselves. Personally, his greatest challenge is finding balance in life, and he admits that he finds his farming work rewarding yet exhausting. Fortunately, there are many joyful experiences that make it worthwhile. “The food is incredible – cutting a watermelon in the middle of the farm and eating the heart out of it. Or when an eagle flies over your head and you can actually feel the wind

With the precinct on the corner of James and McLachlan Streets now in full swing, the Moubarak brothers (of Lychee Lounge and Laruche fame) have opened the doors of their latest venture. Wander down ‘Gerard’s Lane’ and you’ll discover a bistro that takes a contemporary approach to dining. The epicurean experience is centred on share food inspired by modern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern sensibilities. Natural light floods the bistro, highlighting earthy hues and a design that plays on perspective using unusual angles. The result is a space that begs you to linger a little longer and order just one more share plate.

For a community to grow and develop a sense of identity, it needs a familiar place to gather and share ideas. With a dream of finding a tight-knit urban community to call home, Ross and Michael of Double Shot Espresso left their Byron Bay home in a reverse sea change. After the lads were seduced by New Farm’s charm, Double Shot Espresso was born. Slotting perfectly into the streetscape of Oxlade Drive, the cafe fosters a sense of community over a cup of coffee and breakfast of Bubble and Squeak with Poached Eggs. Michael is generally busy baking the selection of homemade sweets, while Ross mans the coffee machine, ever ready for a friendly chat.

When stripped back to its basic elements, the art of cooking doesn’t require a cupboard full of appliances and utensils. With little more than a kettle and saucepan at your disposal, an honest spread – complete with a pot of tea – can be created. This notion was the inspiration for all-day cafe and restaurant The Kettle and Tin, where owner Asa delivers his take on casual degustation. Asa’s trademark artworks (as seen at his other locale, The Ponycat), are beginning to sprout from the walls, while large tables provide the perfect place to gather with friends, savour share plates of Duck Gumbo and sample the selection of Bloody Marys.

RETRO // WARES

The retro redux has proved to be a mainstay when it comes to interior decor and homewares. Keen aesthetes are known to square off at garage sales and in the aisles of antique stores in a bid to claim vintage accoutrements as their own. The cake plate is one vintage item that has moved up in the homewares stakes, rather than being relegated to the back of the cupboard gathering dust. If you lack the aggression needed to snag vintage wares, we recommend this vintage-inspired Ritz Cake Plate from Domayne Fortitude Valley. @ www.domayne.com.au

The luxury of having a garden to grow herbs at home is one not often afforded to urban dwellers. For those who like to have a fresh sprig of rosemary or coriander on hand at all times, there’s the Hydroponic Island Kitchen by Brooklyn studio, Analog Modern. With a sleek, white-washed maple exterior, the standalone bench keeps its secret powers under wraps, featuring a hydroponic herb garden in a drawer. As it’s rather difficult to get the sun to shine into a drawer, the herbs are given their daily dose of light via LEDs and high-output CFL bulbs. @ www.analogmodern.com

While it may encourage poor table manners, the fact that wine glasses can double as a whimsically toned musical instrument always intrigues the curious. With a delicate touch and the right amount of liquid in each glass, you can entertain dinner guests with your musical prowess as you caress the rims into song. Removing the need to have an ear for perfect pitch, the Musical Wine Glasses (made in Austria from lead-free crystal) feature musical notations etched into the side, so you can compose a sonorous symphony. @ www.uncommongoods.com

URBAN // CAMPING Kitchen utensils don’t seem to last as long as they used to, with snapped handles often being the reason for their demise. While intended to be used as camping and backpacking utensils, the Stabber + Sladle by designers Sharon Myoung and Tony Kim could easily find a home in the kitchen of anyone within reach of a discarded twig. By attaching twigs onto the multi-purpose utensil heads, the handy set of servers helps to blend indoor aesthetics with a touch of an outdoor lifestyle. @ www.twnykim.com

Paying tribute to this timeless style of music, the Queensland Pops Orchestra presents Music to Swing By at QPAC on August 18. Clarinet and saxophone virtuoso Andy Firth will present swing tunes and ballads, supported by up-and-coming jazz musician Sarah McKenzie on the piano. The Queensland Pops Orchestra Big Band and Silver Strings will accompany both musicians as they take a journey through the vibrant evolution of jazz. @ www.popsorchestra.com.au

The gentle twang of the guitar, the soothing hum of a harmonica and the soul of a voice filled with unbridled passion: these are the trademarks of Xavier Rudd’s musical style. In pursuing his goal to spread the sounds and stories of Australia’s indigenous population, Xavier Rudd has created a distinct and utterly captivating sound. Having recently released his seventh and most explorative album, Spirit Bird, Xavier has packed his guitars, didgeridoo and harmonica and is hitting the road for an Australian tour that will pass through Brisbane on August 30. @ www.thetivoli.net.au

BY SPUNK/M. WARD, 2012

You need only look at the cover of Stanley Clark’s School Days to know that it was a musical product of the 1970s. The jazz-fusion bassist made a name for himself during that decade with his energetic stylings on the double bass as part of Chick Corea’s group, Return to Forever, which became known as one of the most important collectives in the fusion genre. School Days showcases Stanley’s fast fingerwork, as well as his impeccable knack for rhythm learned whilst working in New York City with jazz greats including Stan Getz, Gil Evans and Horace Silver.

Channelling a touch of Björk, Groove Armada and flashes of folk, French-Finnish duo The Dø fits into the musical genre best described as ‘whimsical’. Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy, the melodic minds behind the indie two-piece, first met whilst working together on the soundtrack of a French film. Their name, The Dø, is derived from the first note of the solfege scale (made famous by The Sound of Music). Both Ways Open Jaws is the duo’s second album, and was released worldwide in November 2011.

While the 1991 film Dingo is not known as one of Australia’s true cinematic classics, it’s not only a beautiful tale of the pilgrimage of a young Australian jazz acolyte, but is also one of the rare acting performances from king of jazz, Miles Davis. The soundtrack to the film is often overlooked when it comes to jazz albums but was actually one of Miles’ last recordings before his death in September 1991. French jazz man Michel Legrand wrote the score to the film, which features Miles at his vintage best on the trumpet.

The masculine portion of duo She & Him (the other half being Zooey Deschanel), M. Ward also manages to do rather well for himself as a solo singer-songwriter. A Wasteland Companion is his most recent solo offering and proves he’s just as entertaining when working alone (though Zooey does provide some backing vocals). Over the course of the record, the 38-year-old music aficionado ruminates on the tribulations and challenges of life – without too much melancholy – accompanied by a myriad of instruments.

Central Park in New York City was originally a rubbish tip and squatters’ home in the burgeoning city. Stirred by the degradation of their beloved Manhattan, in 1857 the city’s burghers decided to create a thing of beauty for all to remember and enjoy. Now with 25,000 trees, plus lakes, hills and more than 100 species of birds, it is difficult to accept that the park is mostly manmade. This book, with beautiful photos and text, details only a small area of ‘The Lake’ near 79th Street, and faithfully echoes the ambience felt by all who visit Central Park.

‘Historical tales of travel on a very small planet’. Humour, so they say, is in the mind of the reader. And here there is plenty to savour. Throughout the world you will encounter much to make you chuckle, and Mark Sheehan et al. have documented some of those instances, offering anecdotes from saddle sores to language barriers to the plain awkward. There’s Tracey from Sydney and ‘holidays with kids’, Geoff from the outback with ‘skinny dippin’’, and Andy from Scotland with ‘horror hotels’. There’s even a few pages at the end for your own reminiscences.

From the basics of life to resources, you can learn everything needed to support your time on Earth in a sustainable way in this book. Your home, energy needs, gardens, animals, and useful skills are considered in nine parts, with in-depth practical tips on supporting yourself comfortably. Herb spirals, earth ovens, raised gardens, keeping pigs – these and more will help you on your way. The authors live on a farm and, with ten Australian experts, have provided a most practical book on the life many see as the way ahead for the world.

TV broadcaster, digital photographer and, above all, author, Tom Ang’s prolific output of books is almost phenomenal. To date 22, and all bestsellers. Starting with basics such as first photos, and ending with four pages of website addresses, this book covers everything needed by novice or pro with plenty of excellent images. Techniques and subjects are covered, before moving into workflow and manipulation for the advanced creator, as well as sharing and movies. Analysis of burn and dodge, tonal quality, and setting up your image library will also guide you.

Something of a futurist, artist Mark Whalen seeks to interpret what the future holds for mankind. By contrasting geometrically structured environments with playfully positioned subjects, Mark depicts future scenarios where humans struggle to reconcile their simultaneous

desires for unbridled freedom and control of society. In doing so, each work not only examines humanity’s ability to adapt to new situations and think creatively, but also forecasts new ways of thinking that will be necessary in years to come. UNTIL AUGUST 5

RYAN RENSHAW GALLERY Before training as an artist, Auckland-based artistic photographer Yvonne Todd earned a living doing commercial photography. With experience in photography and an interest in the idea of beauty, Yvonne uses her art to create images that challenge perceptions and investigate movement. Seahorsel depicts a series of characters frozen whilst striking awkward and often humorous positions. The ambiguous styling of each subject creates the sense of a communal state of mind shared between the subjects of each image. As viewers pause to consider each image, an almost uncomfortable feeling is evoked as the connection between beauty and movement is questioned. UNTIL AUGUST 18

soulful spirit

JONATHAN WILSON The music of Jonathan Wilson manages to somehow wrap itself around your heart and send a ripple of comfort through your soul. His 2011 debut studio album, Gentle Spirit, is a contemplative blend of desert rock and ardent folk that makes listening a pleasure. In 2005, the 37-yearold North Carolina native moved to Laurel Canyon – the Los Angeles neighbourhood that was once home to the likes of Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne in the 1960s – where he was credited with stirring the spirit of its music community through his regular jams. Jonathan’s music will grace the ears of Brisbane audiences on September 16–17, when he plays the Spiegeltent as part of Brisbane Festival. What was your childhood dream? I was always aspiring to play and perform. I didn’t know exactly when it would happen – or if it would happen – but it was always my goal. I was never really interested in anything else. What’s one of the first songs that really had an impact on you? I’d say it would probably have been one of The Beatles’ songs when they got off the road and went into the studio and made all those albums that were really an exploration. That really spoke to me because of the fact that they were that creative and I could just feel the artistry. Were your parents an influence on you? Oh yeah, definitely. My dad is a guitar player and he has a band of guys back home in North Carolina. It’s not a professional band, but they’ve been together since the early 1960s. The fact that those guys were always getting together for rehearsals, and to play shows and gig around, was a big influence on me when I was a kid. I just thought that everybody’s dad did that. My parents have been extremely supportive of my whole career and they’re huge music aficionados as well, which has been a big influence too. What first brought you to the Laurel Canyon music scene? I went to Laurel Canyon in 2005 and got a house there, as well as a studio that was part of my house. To be honest, when I went there it wasn’t supposed to be some kind of pilgrimage; one of my buddies was there and I wasn’t really thinking about

56 map magazine

THE ECO ISSUE AUGUST12

mm144-p56-57-LIVE-FACE.indd 56

what had gone on during the 1960s in the area. But when I started to do what I always do, which is to get people to jam and record, suddenly things started to reveal themselves – I realised where The Doors’ house was and where Joni Mitchell lived and all the things that happened there during the 1960s. I guess, subconsciously, I became a big part of what has now been called the resurgence of the music scene, which happened around the time that I was there. Why do you care so much about music? Because you’re communicating with something that‘s an entity much bigger than you. It’s a timeless thing that you have to handle with the respect that it deserves. It’s something you contribute to, and that’s hard to do if you don’t really have respect for it. If you’re dealing with the same scales that Coltrane is dealing with, you have to be aware of these things. It’s a gift – it’s not something that you decide to do – and when somebody gives you a nice gift, you have to appreciate it. I think sometimes people get misguided and think that it’s something that they can control. What has been your greatest challenge? Being able to strip away so many influences and to distil the thing down to become your own sound. That’s what’s going to be able to translate to people best because they want to see an artist who has a genuine spirit. It’s very tough to be able to shed certain things – like the projections and character of what you think you should be

– so that the spirit can be seen. To me, that’s when music really becomes like an energy. Do you consider yourself a success? At this point, yes, I would, because of all of the people who I am involved with and who I have so much respect for. I have lots of blessings – for me, that’s the definition of success. I’m not quite where I’d like to be in terms of being able to tour in a way that you can get your whole vision on a stage. But those are goals, and really the biggest success is being able to touch people’s hearts. Who inspires you? I was thinking about this the other day and I had a lot of inspiration as a kid growing up. I forgot the amount of time I spent listening to Bob Marley, for example. Sometimes I think that you’re exposed to people like him for so long that you push it aside and go on to the next thing. But listening to him, and to some of the guitar in his albums, was a really big influence for me. Where do you find peace in life? I’m on tour at the moment and I find peace in that whole experience. When I’m on tour, I feel like that’s what I’m supposed to be doing, whereas when I’m sitting back at home, I sometimes feel a bit of angst about what I’m supposed to be doing. Do you believe in a god and, if so, which one? I do believe in a guiding spirit, that’s for sure, but whether or not it’s the Jesus/Bible God, I’m not exactly sure. What are your words of wisdom? Listen to as much vinyl as possible.

DIRECTED BY PHILIPPE FALARDEAU

As well as being an iconic comedian, Bill Murray is also known for his deadpan expression and ability to portray the hollowness of depression. As one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, Bill made a name for himself as a comedian and went on to star in a number of comedies, including Ghostbusters. But it wasn’t until he worked with Wes Anderson on the 1998 film Rushmore that his scope of talents began to be revealed. Teaming up with Wes Anderson again in Moonrise Kingdom, Bill plays the father of a 12-year-old girl who has run off into the wilderness with her childhood sweetheart. When the small town learns of the runaway children, a desperately unorganised rescue mission ensues.

In some cases, the smallest incidents can shape the wildest of dreams. For Shirley MacLaine, a simple slip on a curtain during her first childhood ballet recital incited a snigger amongst the audience. Instantly addicted to the rush of making an audience laugh, a young Shirley decided to become a performer. Following her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1955 film The Trouble with Harry, Shirley has starred in a number of films, with her latest role coming in the shape of pugnacious widow Marjorie Nugent in Bernie. Marjorie is befriended by the town’s well-meaning assistant funeral director, Bernie (Jack Black), who becomes her closest companion. When Marjorie passes away, Bernie’s role in her death is questioned.

Despite having a regular roster of acting roles in his home country of Algeria, Mohamed Fellag decided to flee his home country in 1995 following a period of unrest. After settling in France, he initially found roles in plays that grappled with France’s social issues, before he settled into a steady film career. In a role that also deals with a number of complex social issues, including immigration and suicide, Mohamed stars as Bachir Lazhar, a substitute school teacher, in the French-Canadian film, Monsieur Lazhar. Bachir is an Algerian immigrant living in Montreal who accepts a job teaching a class that has just lost their teacher to suicide. The rueful tale not only follows the healing process of the class, but at the same time also touches on Bachir’s own personal demons.

Sporting a distinct brand of folkpop music inspired by the sounds of Africa, it seems only fitting that Sydney-based band Jinja Safari is named after the town of Jinja in Uganda. Not only is it the town where band member Marcus’ grandmother lives, but the name also pays homage to the way African people can still lose themselves in a heady drumbeat, despite being faced with severe oppression. Revel in the layers of Jinja Safari’s music as the band performs alongside Opossom and White Arrows.

For those who visit Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado, but still crave an additional dose of Spanish culture, GOMA is presenting a retrospective of Pedro Almodovar films running in conjunction with the exhibition. Relish Spain’s essence and rambling language as you lose yourself in a film directed by one of the most influential figures in Spanish cinema. In his earnest approach to filmmaking, Pedro explores the relationship between family and identity, as well as the connection between religion, love and sexuality.

Oscar Wilde once mused: “No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist.“ With the theme of ‘land to sky and beyond’, Art with Altitude encourages artists to not only explore the intense connection we share with the land and sky, but also to contemplate the unknown and investigate the ideas of travel, discovery and adventure. The openair exhibition will feature indigenous art from the Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, as well as sculptural, kinetic and light installations.

In an intensely personal performance, the dancers from the Indonesian Nan Jombang Dance Company present their portrayal of the earthquake that shook Padang in 2009, in Tarian Malam. The dancers had been rehearsing outdoors when the 7.6-scale earthquake began to tremble, sending their dance studio tumbling to the ground. Through a performance that fuses martial arts, drumming, and traditional and contemporary dance, the dancers portray their communal experience of the life-altering event.

TAKEO, CAMBODIA

While there are many impressive pre-Angkorian ruins on the outskirts of the Takeo province, few people visit the town of Takeo itself, except to pass through on their way to the southern beaches of Cambodia. Most of those who do visit the town are part of a motley outfit of volunteers who have come to work for the New Futures Organisation (NFO). A non-profit collective, NFO runs an orphanage for local children who would otherwise be left homeless and also offers education to local monks and to children in remote villages.

The rattle of my ancient rusting bike navigating the dusty dirt road announces my presence long before I unsteadily pass the locals moseying alongside. They acknowledge me with a smile and an amused wave, accustomed to the sight of pale-skinned volunteers balanced precariously atop ageing bicycles. The sun is shining with all its might, unforgiving to those who haven’t grown up basking in its rays. A trickle of sweat mixes with a thick layer of dust to form a muddy line down my leg, as I trudge down unsteadily on each pedal. Despite the climate, and the laborious task of riding a bike in dire need of repair, I can’t resist the charm of my surroundings. I pedal past lagoons of blossoming lotus flowers soaring up through the muddy water in triumphant shades of pink. Enormous swines – big enough to be laden with a saddle – lounge languidly on the grass beside the road. They sniff haughtily in my direction before returning to their slumber. Further along the road, the bright saffron robes of two young monks stand out against the lush green vegetation behind them. They hear me coming and gracefully turn away from the road, standing with their backs to me with their vibrant yellow umbrellas perched on their shoulders like giant marigolds. At first I am somewhat perplexed, as I have been careful to cover my shoulders and knees so as not to

62 map magazine

offend the monks out asking for alms. But I soon remember that it is strictly forbidden for the monks to acknowledge women whilst outside the pagoda, and I try to pass them as quietly as my conspicuous bike will allow. Inside the pagoda, where I am headed today, it is a different story. I am helping to teach English to a class of 20 young monks, aged from about 18–23, in a classroom within the confines of the pagoda. As they file in silently after their Sanskrit lesson, signalled only by the shuffle of bare feet against ancient tiles, I wonder if I will be able to get them to say a single word. But as time passes, the cheeky smiles, flirty innuendo and talk of hip-hop indicate that they are just like most boys their age. Following the two-hour lesson, I mount my rickety steed and steer towards the market in the centre of town for some lunch. Amidst the din of the busy marketplace, I fill my bicycle’s basket with a coconut (pierced by a straw), freshly cooked sticky rice and two golden, juicy mangoes – all for less than the price of a coffee in Australia. The glee of securing such fare for next to nothing makes my impending bike ride in the midday sun far more bearable. My final stop is the NFO orphanage, which sits quietly beside the town’s lake. While most of the kids at the orphanage attend school each day from the early hours of the morning, they can also

attend English classes given by volunteers at the orphanage. True to their impish childhood spirit, when I arrive in the yard of the orphanage, the kids are far more concerned with playing than learning. I feel like a drover rounding them up into the open-air wooden structure that acts as the classroom. The kids take their places begrudgingly at first, weary from the heat with brains already filled to the brim with the day’s learnings. But as we begin the lesson, looks of determination begin to creep into their faces as they painstakingly copy the alphabet from the blackboard. It’s as if they know that English could be their one way to break out of poverty and find a way to chase their dreams in life. On my way back from the orphanage, the sunset blushes over the vast stretches of lotus flowers in the lake. The evening breeze brings with it alluring wisps of fragrant curry from the rustic houses lining the road. As I turn the corner, I see one of the young monks from my class walking in the opposite direction and, having learned my lesson, I prepare to be ignored. He walks stoically in my direction, eyes focused firmly on the horizon behind me. But just as I am about to pass, his eyes dart sideways, filled with a mischievous sparkle, and he flashes me a big grin. As he returns to his silent stoicism, and I to my rattling spokes, the brief exchange between us lifts my spirit even further.
