MANAGING EDITOR’S NOTE
All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree.” –– ALBERT EINSTEIN
Welcome to map magazine’s 148th issue and our last for 2012! I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our partners and advertisers who have supported map magazine in the past year. Without your support we would not make it into letterboxes and onto the street each month. l would like to also say a big thank you to the map team for all the hard work they put in each issue. For the past 13 years, the map team has worked tirelessly to create a magazine that focuses on positive storytelling and one that hopefully inspires you to chase your dreams in life. We now live in incredibly disruptive times with bountiful opportunities to use our voices to shape
the conversation of the community. map has always strived towards helping play a role in shaping a city that is diverse, open, vibrant, supportive, creative and inspiring. A conversation that hopes to inspire those with dormant dreams to awaken them and share them with the community. In March we launched The Weekend Edition and so far we have been staggered by the response it has received, so thank you for your support. Each and every week we are surprised by the sheer number of creative entrepreneurs/artists who are revealing their dreams to the community. I hope you all have a wonderful festive season and we look forward to a playful 2013. Remember to dream ...

EDITOR’S MEMO
––
It is my great fortune to be writing this memo from the wintery climes of Paris, where the streets are blanketed with the last of the autumn leaves and everyone is strolling about with a perpetual blush of pink across their cheeks. What I have discovered about the concept of wanderlust over the past few months is that, once it finds its way into your being, it can (thankfully) never be cured. Our dreamers this month also suffer from an incurable case of wanderlust and have spent their lives exploring the intricacies of the world. For our December/January Wanderlust issue, we share the stories of ballet sensation Li Cunxin, surf-filmmaker Taylor Steele and founders of the Mr & Mrs Smith hotel guides, James and Tamara Lohan. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and may you find yourself overcome with a serious case of wanderlust!

One of the first non-profit organisations to recognise that the path to reducing poverty in developing countries is by providing small business loans, Opportunity International aims to equip people with the means to pull themselves out of the poverty cycle. Since its inception, it has assisted more than four-million people to improve their lives by providing microloans and training for small businesses. Opportunity International’s focus is on women in particular, operating on the philosophy that by empowering one woman with the means to build her own future, you are empowering a whole family. @ www.opportunity.org.au

Being the most headstrong of Ernest Hemingway’s female companions may have earned Martha Gellhorn a place in history, but her work as a travel writer and journalist made her one of the greatest war correspondents of the 20th century. Embedding herself amongst the action and horror of the Spanish Civil War, Vietnam War and Middle Eastern Six-Day War, Martha dreamed of finding the human stories within the atrocities and violence, and sharing them with the world.

A slightly more discreet yet laddish option is the Bicycle Seat Barrel Bag from Walnut Studiolo. With a design that fuses the aesthetics of an antique steamer trunk with the practicality of a St Bernard barrel, the bag – also known as ‘The Seat Trunk’ – is constructed from hand-stitched and hand-finished leather and northwest cedar. CAPTURED // DANCE
Before the days of baggage restrictions, elegant travellers would pack a ‘portmanteau’ to ensure they were never found lacking in appropriate attire. Inspired by this nostalgic aspect of travel, Scottish furniture maker METHOD collaborated with fashion designer Jason Denham to create the METHOD x Denham Journeyman. Constructed from solid ash and lightweight birch with handsewn leather trimmings, the Journeyman features all the necessary compartments to individually house accessories, shoes, suits and other garments, all without a wrinkle in sight. @ www.methodfurniture.co.uk
Individually, dance and photography are powerful ways to express creativity and nourish the spirit. But when infused with a sense of wanderlust, they can produce something infinitely more exciting. California State University student Kevin Chen combines his love for dance and photography with his insatiable desire to explore the world in his Instagram-based project, #Instabreakin. Capturing frozen moments of dance across varied landscapes and identifying them with the #Instabreakin hashtag, Kevin hopes to one day inspire millions of people. @ www.instagram.com/kchensays

A LUXURIOUS EXPLORATION OF MAYAN WISDOM
The Mayans were a clever bunch. And whether or not you’re inclined to believe their calendar-related prophecies (we’ll soon discover who’s right), there’s no denying that they knew a thing or two about living well, in harmony with nature. The coastal town of Tulum, Mexico, was the location of one of the last Mayan cities, and it’s now home to a mystical dwelling of a different kind – born from the wanderlust-intoxicated minds behind Design Hotels. Swathed in tropical jungle along the virgin Caribbean coast and seasoned by beguiling sea breezes, Papaya Playa was created to be a communal playground for urban dwellers looking to re-establish their relationship with nature. A collaboration with hotelier Emilio Heredia, Papaya Playa comprises 85 rustic cabanas of varying
degrees of luxury. Those in possession of a pretty penny can indulge in their own personal Casita – complete with a private terrace – while the more frugal can duke it out for the top bunk in one of the Jungle Cabanas. Fortunately, there are plenty of hammocks to go around, meaning that guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a suitable place for lounging. Simple fare cooked on an open grill and baked in a clay oven composes the menu, which also includes a list of sufficiently exotic cocktails for swilling in the sunshine. For those seeking more of a spiritual adventure, Papaya Playa also recently featured the PopUp Ashram, which integrated yoga and fitness classes and workshops, as well as in-depth explorations of the local Mayan wisdom.

What is your profession? I install and maintain beehives
What is your profession? I oversee the onboard and
to raise awareness about the importance of the honey bee. I also harvest the honey. What training or qualifications do you need to fill this role? There are no formal qualifications needed, but beekeeping is a complex job that requires a lot of reading and commitment. It also helps if you’re handy and creative when it comes to building equipment, which my business-partner Jack is.
onshore program for guests visiting the Antarctic. This includes deciding places to visit and whether conditions are suitable for landing. What training or qualifications do you need to fill this role? Boating experience is a key component. You need to be able to drive zodiacs (inflatable boats) and understand and react to changing conditions in an extreme environment. What are the key skills and responsibilities of the role? I work with the captain and hotel manager to deliver an experience that includes zodiac cruising, landings, hiking, camping and kayaking. How did you get involved in your profession? A friend found me a job as a zodiac driver. Before that, I had been a PADI master instructor and skipper of a charter vessel. Could you break in to the industry in other ways? Yes, our team delivers an onboard education component. You could be a marine biologist, ornithologist, geologist or historian. I work with a couple who were part of a Nobel Peace Prize-winning team! What do you hope to achieve within your industry? To create Antarctic experiences that are talked about long after the guests return home. Are you in the industry for the long term? As long as I still love getting on a long-haul flight to go to work, I will continue! What advice would you give someone looking to emulate your success? Be yourself and love what you do, where you are and who you are with, and you can’t go wrong. Did you always think you would be in this role? Once I became an expedition team member, I knew I wanted to become an expedition leader. What was your first paid job? When I was at school, I delivered 96 papers three times a week and was paid $2.76 a fortnight. What would you love to do if you weren’t in this role? I wouldn’t want to do anything else – everything draws me to Antarctica. What inspires you? Taking people out of their comfort zones and giving them confidence. Who is your rolemodel? My mother. I also believe you can learn from every person you meet. What are your words of wisdom? ‘Often wrong, never in doubt.’ It’s a fun way to say believe in everything you do.
beekeeper/bee one third
What are the key skills and responsibilities of the role?
A passion for nature, construction of equipment, regular hive checks, business management and continued research. How did you get involved in your profession? It all started with a conversation and a trip to the library. We were really motivated by The Little Veggie Patch Co guys and, for us, bees seemed like the perfect way to start a conversation about food in the city. Could you break in to the industry in other ways? Yes! Join a beekeeping club – they are a great source of collective knowledge. What do you hope to achieve within your industry?
Increase bee populations in Brisbane, educate about the importance of bees, and collaborate with local chefs and horticulturalists to create a more engaged attitude towards urban farming. Are you in the industry for the long term? Absolutely! This project has a long-term vision that is going to take some time, but I don’t mind because I’m doing what I love. What advice would you give someone looking to emulate your success?
Read a lot and seek advice from successful people. Did you always think you would be in this role? Not at
all; this has been the most random and happy adventure of my life! What was your first paid job? I was a shop girl at an imported furniture and jewellery merchant. What would you love to do if you weren’t in this role? Work in a school kitchen garden and cook with kids. What inspires you? Early mornings, my amazing/creative/driven friends and green smoothies. Who is your rolemodel? Michael Pollan and Jamie Oliver – they’re both so engaging and passionate. What are your words of wisdom? “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” – Michael Pollan.

Foraging for treasures beyond the shores of Australia, the team at The Antique Guild sources jewellery, furniture and precious objects from far and wide. Sitting on the shelves of local boutiques, waiting to surprise passersby with unexpected pearls of wisdom, paper boat press’ sage ceramic wares are an inspiring delight for shoppers to stumble upon. After honing her craft, founder Kylie Johnson has opened a dedicated paper boat press boutique in Ashgrove. The shop sits inside a heritage building that dates back to 1926, where Kylie’s art, homemade goods and one-off pieces look at ease in equally charming surrounds. The space will also double as a gallery for ceramic, pottery and jewellery exhibitions. @ www.paperboatpress.com
For Brisbane’s food and drink scene, the last 12 months have been a coming of age, with new haunts injecting fresh ideas into the local foodscape, and old favourites continuing to deliver an unwavering dedication to delicious fare and creative design. Following such a busy year, the map magazine and The Weekend Edition 2012/13 EAT/drink Awards, sponsored by Sunshack Finest Cider, were the most popular yet. A record number of votes were received in the gourmet poll and a full list of winners is on The Weekend Edition website. @ www.theweekendedition.com.au

CAMERA // CLASSIC There were days when having your photo taken was a momentous occasion – one that would require all involved to carefully prepare outfits and hold painfully still for long periods of time while the exposure took. While we’ve long since evolved from the stoic portraits of the Wild West, Lomography has released a camera that at least brings back some of the sentiment of the occasion. La Sardina Belle Starr features an oxidised metal exterior engraved with intricate details reminiscent of days when manly moustachioed men roamed the streets in spurs, and buxom women danced scandalously atop pianos. @ www.lomography.com.au

LI CUNXIN In retirement, a dancer hangs up their ballet points, but their passion for dance doesn’t always leave them. One of the world’s most gifted ballet dancers, Chinese-born and Brisbane-based Li Cunxin (pronounced shwin-sing), retired at his peak in 1999 at age 38. Li’s extraordinary story of being plucked from extreme poverty at age 11 to study ballet and serve in Chairman Mao’s revolution is shared in his bestselling autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer. As Li takes the helm of Queensland Ballet and discovers that his passion for dance is still strong, his dream is to nurture and inspire the next generation of dancers.
Ballet dancers at the pinnacle of their art form will persistently yearn and hunt for one fleeting moment when all the stars align on stage. Li Cunxin is one of the few who have experienced this exhilarating “divine moment” in dance, as he describes it. “It is the ultimate sort of exploration and excitement; it’s a divine moment you never want to end,” Li gushes. “You feel everything click: you feel the audience is with you, you don’t have to think about the music, you don’t think how you’re going to take that step and complete that technique. You know in your heart that everything will finish absolutely perfectly. It will all be just right. Every step you take, every hand gesture, even the way you look at you partner – you are that role. You are made for it.” In his new role as Queensland Ballet’s artistic director, Li intends to motivate and train his dancers to chase that divinity on stage. Yet Li makes no promises; he is the first to admit it is rare to achieve. “Even in my career, I can count those moments on one hand. The magic moment doesn’t happen that often. But when it happens, you really step into another level of your dancing, and to simply recapture that moment is not good enough – you want something more. So it’s that continual improvement to be better than the last performance; that’s what drives you forward.” For the ambitious dancer, Li’s life story
18 map magazine
provides plenty of inspiration. His autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer, was published in 2003 and has been sold in more than 20 countries. It shares his tales of tragedy and triumph from age 11, when he was taken from his povertystricken village in northeast China by Mao’s cultural delegates to become a supporter of Chairman Mao’s vision for China. From that fateful day, Li left behind his family – his parents and six brothers – to begin a gruelling ballet training regime at the Beijing Dance Academy. Despite this harsh experience, Li’s determination, grit and passion set him on a path to becoming one of the most legendary dancers in the world, dancing with the Houston Ballet for 16 years and in guest roles for the best ballet companies around the globe. Li made international headlines in 1981 at age 20 when he defected from China while in America – a dramatic event that he considers one of his greatest life challenges. Li moved to Australia at age 34 with his wife, Queensland ballerina Mary McKendry, and for the last three years of his career danced as the principal with The Australian Ballet. Li recalls his childhood dream was to go one step further than his peasant father, whose dream was to drive a truck. Yet what Li’s parents lacked in wealth, they made up for in values.

“My parents are such honest people and have such integrity and dignity in what they do and how they treat people. And they are the hardest-working people. Those qualities have left such a deep impression and influence on me,” Li shares warmly. Li retired from ballet in 1999 at the peak of his ballet career. “When I was dancing in America, I saw one of the dances by Rudolf Nureyev towards the end of his career. And in my personal opinion, he went for too long. It really took the magic of his dance in my mind away. From that moment, I promised myself I would never dance past my best.” While dancing with The Australian Ballet, Li planned for his retirement by studying accounting and finance courses by correspondence. In 1999, he began working as a stockbroker and, while he trusted his decision to retire from ballet, he still yearned for the stage. “For a while, I really suffered physically and emotionally,” he admits of the transition. “When ballet is your life, your love, your passion for so long, and then you suddenly walk away – it was very difficult. Sometimes I wondered what the hell I was doing sitting in front of a computer. But I have learned a lot about business, about management, and about finance, so I think all of these things will become invaluable for me in my new role.”

When Li was approached to take up the job with Queensland Ballet, he did some serious soul searching and discovered that ballet had never left him. “That passion for the art form was always deep within my heart and I feel I was inspired by the prospect of taking Queensland Ballet to the next level.” Li’s dream now is to: “nurture and inspire a new generation of dancers through my work with Queensland Ballet. I’d like to take this company to truly international standards, to help dancers realise their utmost potential and to attract and retain the highest standard of dancers to this state.” To achieve this, Li will bring together talented international choreographers and designers to present world-class ballets in 2013, including what the company describes as “three timeless and cherished classics”: Cinderella in April, Giselle in June and The Nutcracker in December. Li’s advice to young dancers is to be passionate, dedicated and hard working. “It’s really about the pursuit of perfection,” he says. “It’s about what kind of dancer you can become rather than worrying about what role you might get, because when you become a good dancer,

the leading roles will come to you.” Asked about his greatest achievements, Li doesn’t point to his dance career, but rather his strong family bond. Awarded Australian Father of the Year in 2009, he is a proud parent with Mary to three children; their eldest, Sophie, is deaf. “I have made a huge difference in the lives of my parents and my six brothers and their families. And I’ve been a good father to my three children and I am most proud of this family commitment. I think that’s the hardest to achieve because you’re taking on the responsibility of helping others, not just yourself.” To take on the initial four-year role with Queensland Ballet, Li has relocated from Melbourne to Brisbane with Mary and their youngest child (their two elder children remain in Melbourne to work and study), and he is excited about the future. “I’m a forward-looking man,” Li explains of his positive approach to life. “I am genuinely excited about what’s ahead of me; I always set myself goals and aims. Whatever I do, I really want to see how best I can do it. So the pursuit of excellence and perfection is what motivates me to go forward.”

ARCHITECTURAL // ODE When Brooklynite Ana Cláudia Schultz made the decision to pursue her dream of becoming a jewellery designer, she did what many dream chasers do when starting out and moved back in with her parents. The fact that her parents lived on the island of Florianopolis in southern Brazil only provided her with further inspiration, and it was there that she set about designing her first collection, Archetype. An ode to architecture, from its trusses to its engineering, the collection was inspired by buildings in both Florianopolis and Brooklyn. @ www.anaclaudiadesign.com

SEALED // CUFFS Back in the day when letter writing was the only form of long-distance communication, authors would mark their identity with a wax seal to be broken only by the recipient. Californian jewellery purveyor Pyrrha creates its cufflinks using 18th- and 19th-century wax seals, each with their own historical significance. The cufflinks are painstakingly handcrafted via traditional wax casting, using reclaimed sterling silver and bronze. Employing a similar process, Pyrrha also crafts a collection of talisman necklaces, rings and bracelets. @ www.pyrrha.com 22 map magazine

TAYLOR STEELE To watch one of American surf-filmmaker Taylor Steele’s epic works (The Drifter, Sipping Jetstreams and Castles in the Sky to name a few) is to surrender yourself to the emotional spectrum that comes with travelling, nature and, of course, surfing. Your heart pounds at the daring antics of some of the world’s best pro surfers, only to then swell at the sheer beauty of a sunset in a remote corner of the world. Self-confessed gypsies, Taylor, his wife and their two kids have spent the past two years living in Byron Bay, where Taylor manages the beachfront artists residency La Casa, passionately tapping into the creative environment to fuel ideas of his own.
I grew up … in San Diego and both my parents surfed. So from the age of five, I would go on surf trips with them once or twice a year to Mexico and Hawaii. My dad had tried to get me surfing … when I was about two, but I didn’t really like it. I remember falling underwater and being stuck under the board and feeling really scared from it, so I didn’t surf for a while after that. I remember the first wave I ever surfed … when I was seven years old. My friends had found some surfboards and wanted to go and ride them, so I went with them, only doing it because they were. Meanwhile, my dad was so excited that he snuck down to the beach without me knowing it and watched from the hillside. I was pretty hooked after that. My parents … were a huge influence on me. They were always really supportive of me doing what I wanted to do and they gave me all the tools they could early on so that I could do it. When I was ten, they bought a video camera to shoot Christmas and holidays and I basically took over the camera. My friends and I would go down to the beach and basically take turns videoing each other surfing, and then we’d make little surf movies from that. All through high school, we made films of each other surfing and acting. I was lucky … because it was a really organic evolution from me shooting my friends and making little surf videos, to my friends then becoming pro surfers. By the
26 map magazine
time I was 18, my first movie came out and it was successful. The greatest challenge has been … going outside my comfort zone. When you make a successful film, it’s sort of a blessing and a curse. I felt like I had to keep those fans happy, which made me more conservative in my early filmmaking days. I started making stuff that I thought they would like because they liked the first one, and those films sort of ended up being copies of the original film. The hardest thing was having to go back and reinvent myself. I fuel my creativity by … being honest with myself about what I’m actually interested in and not worrying about the success of it all. Looking back on my films … I realise now that everything that didn’t really work out was sort of a lesson. I’ve had movies that were more successful than other ones, but usually they’re stepping stones to a different sort of comfort and trying new stuff. I would definitely consider myself a success … but I think there are different stages of success. In the beginning, just making surf movies was my goal – I didn’t know that there was a career in that because there weren’t that many surf filmmakers 20 years ago. So just by being able to make surf movies, I felt like I’d already succeeded. And nowadays, for a movie to be successful in my eyes, it just needs to be different and, hopefully, better than the last one. I’m proud of the fact … that if you look
THE WANDERLUST ISSUE DECEMBER12/JANUARY13

from my first movie through to my last movie, there’s such a range of differences. I’m always most proud of my last movie, because it’s where my heart just was. My movies have changed … in the past eight years to become more travel-based movies – and that stemmed from having children. When you turn on the TV, there’s CNN and all these news programs that show the world painted in a negative light. I wanted to show my kids that the world’s a beautiful place and that it’s romantic. And although it might not be an accurate portrayal of my trip, it’s more like a memory of it. It’s like trying to capture that feeling of remembering all the good stuff. My kids used to travel with me … wherever I went while I was making the travel-themed films. My daughter’s passport was full by the time she was one. But now they’re eight and six, so school doesn’t permit it as much. We’ve been living in Byron Bay … for two years. My wife and I have a plan for a kind of gypsy-style way of raising our kids – every six years we move to a new country. For the first six years we were in Bali, and years seven through to 12 will be in Australia, then 13 through to 20 will be living on the coast in France. But right now, I feel like there’s no better place for the kids at this age than Byron Bay. There are rolling hills and beautiful great waves, and the people have the right attitude.

The thing I love about travelling … is being inspired by places and then bringing that back home with me, whether it’s the way people live or something else. Travelling really makes you think about everything. I’ve met so many interesting characters in my travels ... One of the most interesting was when I went surfing in India and I met this swami who has an ashram and surfs as a form of yoga – he’s a surfing swami! His ashram does yoga, but they also surf as a way of meditation. What I’ve learned from my travels … is basically that all people are very similar and their needs, wants and goals are very like-minded – it’s family and friends that make them happy. So while we might have different religious beliefs or political situations, we’re all the same at heart. Terrence Malick … has been a huge influence on me recently, but I used to be really influenced by Fight Club and just the whole editing style and the way that David Fincher treated the viewer. I loved the raw edginess of it – the whole soundtrack and overall edit were really aggressive. I like films to be challenging like that, both contextually and visually. Music is … a massive part of
map magazine
mm148-p26-27-NTNL-xx.indd 27
filmmaking for me. I would say that it’s 50% of what I do and it has different motives or reasons for each movie. In my early days, music was for action and to keep the energy up, but lately it’s been more emotive and creates the feeling of the situation. The advice I would give young aspiring filmmakers … is to look at what is currently out there and then be different and find a niche that interests you, because there are so many different styles. I let ideas grow … by just slowly thinking about them. If the idea isn’t just a fleeting thought that goes away, but rather just sits there and stays with me, I develop it more and think about how to do it. And if I get inspired by that process, then I do it. Some projects take ten years of thinking before I attempt them. My dream now … is to make feature films that aren’t surfing related. I’m open to different genres, as long as it’s something that has a story that resonates with me. I guess my style is to create more of a romantic view of things, but also creating the feeling of being there – sort of a blend of reality versus a memory. My wisdom for the world is … to simply treat people how you would like to be treated.

According to Ernest Hemingway: “When you work hard all day with your head and know you must work again the next day, what else can change your ideas and make them run on a different plane like whisky?” The golden liquor loved so dearly by the great author now has its own dedicated home in Brisbane, tucked away in a quiet corner of the Emporium. The Nant Whisky Cellar and Bar story originates at an old farm in the Tasmanian Central Highlands. After buying the farm in 2004, Keith Batt set about converting an old water-powered flour mill into a working distillery where he could handcraft his own world-class single-malt whisky. In an attempt to recreate a slice of his Tasmanian retreat in
Brisbane, Keith has designed an intimate bar where whisky savants, the whisky curious and even aspiring writers looking to channel their inner Hemingway can savour the amber elixir. A rough red-brick wall references the old mill at the distillery, while a replica of an artwork called The Nant Frieze, which was commissioned for the Tasmanian distillery, stretches along the opposite wall. In homage to the watering hole’s origins, the floor and bar are made from Tasmanian oak, lamb from the Nant estate is on the menu and antiques also from the estate create a personal touch. As you savour the bar’s signature drink, the staff happily share the Nant story and discuss each single malt.

JAMES & TAMARA LOHAN
Be it the dirty weekend or a romantic interlude, there are certain getaways where attention to the finer details, and perhaps the use of a pseudonym, is essential. After several failed romantic getaways that included unsightly doilies, sagging mattresses and an unwitting sojourn at a health farm, James and Tamara Lohan knew the situation had to be remedied. In 2003, they launched their own guidebook, under the moniker Mr & Mrs Smith, revealing the finest boutique boltholes, designer dwellings and quaint pieds-à-terre within a sneaky drive from London. Ten years later, they’ve become an authority on global boutique travel, with a suite of nine caress-worthy guidebooks and a website that sees more than 3000 bookings a month.
For the record, in spite of finding themselves under intense caloric scrutiny at that infamous health retreat, the couple were determined to make the best of it. So, in bon vivant defiance, they snuck out for a beer and chips at the local pub. At the time, in 2002, James’ forte was hosting parties in London nightclubs, while Tamara was an Oxford graduate with a penchant for languages, literature and brand marketing. Neither knew anything about publishing – let alone the world of travel guidebooks. It was also a time when the internet was still in relative infancy as a marketing tool, meaning that if they were going to find the real getaway gems, they’d have to trawl through every guide book, magazine, newspaper and brochure they could get their hands on. “It was Christmas, but we didn’t get any presents in the mail – it was all hotel brochures!” Tamara laughs in retrospect. “We waded through about 1500 brochures, labelling them ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘maybe’, trying to decide whether they were good enough to be part of the collection.” Once the pair had narrowed the selection down, the next (admittedly enviable) task was to jump in the car and drive around the countryside to experience the shortlisted dwellings for themselves. But the more places they saw, the higher their standards became. And while their initial intention for the book was to narrow it down to 52 properties – one for every weekend of the year – they found they could only faithfully
34 map magazine
recommend 41. “We were mortified,” Tamara recalls. “We thought we didn’t have a book if we didn’t have those 52 properties. But then we realised that it was the best thing that we could have done, because it was about hand-picking the best and not compromising just to make 52.” That shrewd, unwavering approach to guide curation is undoubtedly the reason Mr & Mrs Smith has won over the notoriously noncommittal hearts of the modern jetset. Not only has its team of travel savants visited every single pied-à-terre and boutique dwelling that they recommend, but they’ve also scrutinised the minutiae of its design and ambience. Be it cosy reading nooks, endearing old libraries or intimate dining quarters, the charms that make a hotel Mr & Mrs Smith-worthy are those that wrap themselves around your heart, lift the spirit and make you forget about the outside world. “It comes down to the small touches,” James explains. “Things like lighting levels, music, the finishes on the furniture and the thread count on the sheets. It’s very rare that somebody gets all those things right, but the hotel has to have its own identity and feel unique. Style is subjective, but what we try to do is find properties with good taste.” The other enduring philosophy that has endeared Mr & Mrs Smith to discerning travellers is its commitment to doing only anonymous reviews. Not only does the process allow Mr & Mrs Smith’s guest reviewers (a handpicked cohort of some the
THE WANDERLUST ISSUE DECEMBER12/JANUARY13
mm148-p34-35-INTNL-xx.indd 34
world’s most respected tastemakers) the clandestine thrill of anonymity, but it also enables them to avoid the PR spin and discover the nuances for themselves. “Some guides overwhelm you with so much information that you need a holiday from planning your holiday,” James says. “And it’s not discerning information. What we try to be is like if your best stylish, tasteful friend has come back from a holiday and told you: ‘Do this, stay there, eat here and – by the way – book one of the rooms overlooking the back gardens and get table ten in the corner because it’s lovely and romantic.’ We try to cut back the information to only include stuff that people want to know. Plus, people know that, if we’ve picked our favourite rooms, we’ve actually been there.” While, these days, the bulk of their business comes from bookings via their website (which launched in 2005), James and Tamara know that people’s inherent attachment to their brand still comes as a result of the guidebooks. “You can’t touch and smell your computer like you can a book,” James laughs. “So it’s nice to still have that tactility where you can really get across the quality of a brand and build a bond with the customers.” With a following driven by an appreciation for design and aesthetics, that ability to engage the emotional sensibilities of customers through eloquent prose and spectacular photography is invaluable. “It’s nice to have the books

as a kind of showcase,” James continues. “It’s like high fashion – our books are our catwalk collection whereas the website is more of a diffusion range.” As for the couple themselves, spend a few minutes in their company and you’ll immediately sense a tight bond, mutual respect and a relationship that balances business and pleasure precariously, but successfully. “We’re total role reversals,” James reveals. “I choose the wallpaper and Tamara looks after the technical stuff at home, like making the TV work! And with the business, she runs the technical side of things whereas I’m more on the front end and I’m very into the design and aesthetics side of things.” The couple admits to challenging moments when they thought of giving up on their venture, but, fortunately, they were thwarted each time by a relentless optimism. “As entrepreneurs, we’re born with too much optimism,” James jokes. “We just never believe it’s going to fail. And if something’s your passion, you can’t help but work hard at it. We’re very fortunate that we’ve built something that we love as much as we did when we first started it.” They are most proud of managing to run their own global

success
business whilst still finding time to spend with their kids, aged five and two. “On Sunday we go to our local farmers market and the kids have hot chocolate while we sit and have our coffee,” Tamara says of where they find their brief moments of peace. “If we’re not travelling, then we do that religiously.” Inspired by their growing family, the couple will also soon launch a sister site, Smith & Family, that will allow design savants with kids the opportunity to travel without sacrificing on style or taste. Having appreciated her own upbringing, Tamara cites her mother as her greatest inspiration. “My mum didn’t have the education that I had, but she was very bright and she started her own business because she had no money,” she says. “She really taught me perspective and about doing things yourself.” Similarly, James’ words of wisdom are from his father. “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it,” he quotes. “I think that’s a really good philosophy for everyone in life. It isn’t easy – it’s bloody hard work and if you think running your own business is going to give you more freedom, think again. Whatever you do in life, apart from realising that it might be difficult, you really have to love it.”

Sitting within a commercial area of Fortitude Valley, two neighbouring nondescript Queenslanders sparked an idea for a new venture by Damian Griffiths of Limes Hotel. Aside from the location, Damian’s inspiration for his choose-your-ownadventure-style locale also came from food trends across the globe. The two renovated Queenslanders now form a single establishment, where you can unwind in the cafe, enjoy a feast in the gastro pub, relax in the beer garden, dine in the private dining room, dance in the tiki bar or ponder the world in the Hemingway room. Each space flows onto the next, creating a string of different experiences.
Stemming from a dining concept that originated in Sydney, Pony Eagle Street Pier creates a feast for all the senses. The interior is composed of raw materials, including exposed brick, timber and leathers, that draw you towards the open-plan kitchen focal point, where diligent chefs prepare fresh cuts of meat over custom wood-fired ovens and coal pits. The menu also includes share plates and pasta dishes, reflecting the diversity of contemporary Australian fare. The outdoor terrace bar seems to leap out over the Brisbane River while, inside, a series of dining spaces is connected by a two-metre-long metal ribbon.
For creator of The Whistle-Stop Cafe James Macdonald-Buchanan, childhood memories of his mother’s veggie patch have always lingered, inspiring his love of fresh produce. In addition to his cafe, James also owns a farm on the Sunshine Coast and one day dreams of creating a paddockto-plate link from the farm. For the moment though, he sources produce locally and tends the cafe’s smaller veggie patch. The food offerings change monthly and any ingredients not in season are swiftly removed from the menu. The cafe resides in a renovated Queenslander and you can dine in the sunlit interior or by the garden in the courtyard.

SEASONAL // FARE
CAMPFIRE // CORN
FRUITY // BEVERAGE
Our innate connection with nature often becomes most apparent as the seasons begin to change, lifting spirits and awakening the tastebuds. In time for the onset of summer, Gazebo Bar & Restaurant at Hotel Urban Brisbane has released its summer menu, designed to be enjoyed on a balmy evening. The menu is classically grounded and experiments with contemporary Asian flavours in meals such as a salad of roasted duck with fresh coconut and mango, and saffron and lemon myrtle tagliatelle with local prawns. @ www.hotelurban.com.au
There are certain staples, such as marshmallows and damper, that demand to be cooked on an open campfire. Popcorn, on the other hand, is usually left at home, where the ease of the microwave makes the task far more manageable – unless you happen to own a Jacob Bromwell Popcorn Popper. With a design that harks back to the early 1800s, when campfire cooking was done out of necessity rather than pleasure, the Popcorn Popper allows you to thrust the kernels over the fire and cook them easily without burning yourself on the flames. @ www.jacobbromwel l.com
Handcrafted in the Southern Highlands of NSW, Sunshack Finest Cider takes its name from a hangout dubbed ‘The Shack’ near its cider mill. Each bottle of cider is made from crisp Granny Smith apples, Williams pears and pure water from its sandstone spring, using a cold-fermentation process to retain freshness and full fruit flavours. The summer beverage is best enjoyed over ice (and with crushed mint if you’re feeling fancy), and the cider’s minimal lingering sweetness will bode well with a bountiful cheese platter. @ www.sunshackcider.com
BAKED // BREW Some people believe that to consume bread and beer in tandem is to tempt your waistline into a constant state of expansion. Others hail it as one of the greatest culinary combinations known to man. It is the latter school of thought that inspired Easy Tiger, a bake shop and beer garden in Austin, Texas. Be it a pretzel, a pastry, or an artisan sandwich, you can wash it down with a local craft beer or a swill of whisky. Books, games and pingpong tables perched on the banks of the nearby creek invite diners to slow down and stay awhile. @ www.easytigeraustin.com PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAYMOND THOMPSON

Trim any roots and discoloured leaves from the spinach. Wash the spinach in several changes of water and drain well. Coarsely chop the leaves and stalks. Place the spinach in a large non-aluminium saucepan, then cover and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. There is no need to add water to the pan as the moisture on the leaves will be sufficient for cooking. Drain the spinach in a colander, pressing with the back of a spoon to extract the moisture.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C. Cut the onions in half from top to bottom, then slice each half into semi-circles. Heat the oil in a frying pan and gently fry the onions until translucent and lightly browned. Add the spinach and stir over the heat for a few minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Tip the spinach mixture into a large, shallow baking dish, or six smaller ramekins. If using one large dish, make six depressions in the spinach with the back of a spoon; if using six ramekins, make a depression in each one. Break an egg into each depression, then drizzle a little oil on top of each egg. Bake for ten minutes, or until the eggs are set. Serve hot as a light meal, with a small bowl of yoghurt.

Though rather obscure to the rest of the world, Belgian string trio Snaarmaarwaar has become a darling of the European folk-festival circuit since the 2009 release of its self-titled debut album. A fast-fingered fusion of mandola, mandolin and guitar, the threesome’s catchy rhythms have been known to incite mass onsets of folk dancing at their performances, as people discard their inhibitions for the love of a good jig. Combining Irish, French and Scottish folk influences with a touch of jazz, Snaarmaarwaar’s rapid-fire picking and energetic brilliance create an exciting take on folk music.
Born with the less remarkable moniker Norma Deloris Egstrom, Peggy Lee adopted her stage name at age 17, as she was treading her first steps towards jazz stardom. Though possessing a limited vocal range, Peggy’s bewitching style of sultry jazz earned her a place among the most respected chanteuses of the genre. Black Coffee was her very first album, released in 1956, and features some of her greatest classics, including the distinctly sultry trumpet intro of the titular song, as well as ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ and ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’.
The smooth crooning of Bing Crosby might be the requisite Christmas soundtrack for many people, but for those who like their music with a touch more grunt, such classics can wear thin. Though it takes the appearance of a kitsch compilation found on the counter of a petrol station, Merry Axemas is, in fact, a rather stellar offering from some of music’s guitar greats. Lending their six strings to the Christmas classics are electric guitar aces including Jeff Beck, Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (who does a dramatic, rockinfused version of ‘Silent Night’).
Best known for penning (and singing) The Roots’ hit ‘The Seed (2.0)’, Cody ChesnuTT took a rather long hiatus between his 2002 debut release The Headphone Masterpiece and his second album, released this year. A pensive chronicle of the decade in between, Landing on a Hundred charts the journey of a man evolving from a wayward youth to times of drug addiction and womanising, before ultimately transcending it all to find a sense of peace. Despite the heavy subject matter, Cody’s cheerful melodies and rhythmic neo-soul style are a pleasure to the ears.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WALK IN THE WORLD
COLLECTOMANIA
ON THE MAP: WHY THE WORLD LOOKS THE WAY IT DOES
DRAWN FROM PARADISE
BY JOHN BAXTER
BY CLAUDIA CHAN SHAW
BY SIMON GARFIELD
BY DAVID ATTENBOROUGH & ERROL FULLER
In his memoir of Paris, John Baxter recounts his attempts to enlighten tourists about the wonder of the people and places that contribute to the city’s reputation for being the cultural capital of the world. Here are the artists, Picasso and Chagall; the writers, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce; and the places, Montmartre, hidden alleys unknown to strangers and ornate gates giving entry to who knows where. Thrust into the role of tour guide, the author exemplifies ‘the stranger in their midst’, and reveals his love for the French metropolis.
With her petite bob, she became instantly recognisable as a host on ABC’s The Collectors. Now in print, Claudia Chan Shaw continues to share her passion for things of the past people so love to collect, and things of the present we reluctantly discard. As a fashion designer, board member for the Council of Textile & Fashion Industries of Australia, and selfconfessed collectomaniac, her words come with authenticity. Twenty-one chapters cover almost all we can imagine, and end with making a bequest for when you die – what more could we want?
Ever drawn a map of Treasure Island and burnt the edges? Or mapped directions for a friend? It’s inside us, an inbuilt compass that helps us on our way around our own little worlds. From the first inkling of how to get somewhere, to current Facebook traffic on the web, and GPS, Simon Garfield shows how the changing face of maps has evolved throughout human history. The first map of the known world from 330 BC slowly evolved into the classic Mercator projection of the 1600s and, tellingly, Facebook’s 2010 creation is overlaid onto this. So near, yet so far.
Sir David Attenborough has probably had more influence on the way we see the natural world than any other person on our planet Earth. His documentaries reveal nature in a way that no other has been able to, and the brilliance of his association with the BBC Natural History videographers has led us into realms both unknown and unimagined. Here, within the confines of the old technology – the paper-bound book – Sir David has collaborated with artist Errol Fuller to bring us New Guinea’s birds of paradise. Excellent!

The continual evolution of contemporary Australian art is inspiring artists from across the country to creatively challenge themselves to produce innovative and thought-provoking works. RICHARD MALOY Recently, you may have spotted a growing yellow structure through GOMA’s riverside glass facade. Big Yellow, as the structure is affectionately titled, is lauded New Zealand artist Richard Maloy’s grandiose cardboard construction, showing as part of GOMA’s APT7 exhibition from December 8. Held together with thousands of staples and strips of tape and hastily decorated with a lick of yellow paint, Big Yellow measures two storeys high and 30 metres long. It demonstrates Richard’s fascination with the process of art making and desire to challenge the art-viewing experience.
As this story is sent to print, New Zealand artist Richard Maloy, 35, is in the midst of building his Big Yellow sculpture installation for GOMA’s 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7). APT7 features works by 140 artists from 25 countries across the region. In constructing Big Yellow over three intense weeks, Richard explains he starts with an empty space and endless sheets of cardboard, rolls of tape, some staple guns and a ladder. “I’m making forms and then the forms start to dictate how it should be,” he explains of the organic construction process. “So often there are moments when the structure starts to collapse in on itself and those moments are the things I’m interested in. It’s like problem solving – working out how to attach it, how to stop it from falling, and how it will become part of the structure.” Richard is chuffed to take over the expansive River Room with its foyer-like design and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlook the Brisbane River. He explains the River Room’s exterior visibility is a first for his practice because it enables him to also engage with passersby. “I’m interested in the viewpoints from all over the city – that, without even coming into the gallery, people can interact with the work,” he says gratefully. Richard’s sculpture certainly lends itself to being pondered up close and from afar. From a distance, Big Yellow takes on an almost architectural value as if it is
46 map magazine
a building facade. But the closer the viewer gets, the less certain they become of the structure’s solidity and purpose. Is it flimsy or strong? Shabbily put together or carefully constructed? Temporary or permanent? Richard finds duality intriguing and hopes his viewers do too. His art practice utilises artistic mediums including sculpture, photography, installation and video to explore the act of art making and the connections between artists, artwork and audience. Born in Auckland in 1977, Richard can’t recall having a childhood dream, although he remembers being fascinated by visual and spatial possibilities early on. At age seven he became “obsessed with moving furniture around”. “So, if mum and dad went out, by the time they got home all the furniture would be totally rearranged and in strange positions,” he laughs. “I quite often think there are elements to that that are really apparent in the way I work, in terms of approaching a space and moving objects around and seeing how things function and testing the height and distances of things.” Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000 and a Master of Fine Arts in 2002 from the University of Auckland. One of his lecturers was internationally renowned artist Michael Parekowhai, whose $1 million The World Turns commission (a life-sized bronze elephant tipped on its head) is newly installed outdoors on GOMA’s riverbank.

Richard doesn’t consider himself a success, and instead believes he has been “lucky” in his career. Upon graduating in 2000, he secured gallery representation with the eminent Sue Crockford Gallery in Auckland and began exhibiting regularly. His works are held in both private and public collections, including the Auckland Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2009, Richard was awarded the Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award to complete a residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts near San Francisco, an opportunity he considers one of his greatest achievements. Richard shares he has never considered giving up on art, even though he admits it can be tough financially. Aside from developing new work, Richard works as a studio assistant to artists including eminent pop artist Billy Apple, whom Richard considers an unofficial mentor. “Billy is very particular and I’ve learned that he has a really strong vision and he does everything possible to make his vision paramount. And I think it’s interesting to learn that, if you’re an artist and you have a particular way you want it to be, you don’t have to compromise.” Richard says he still has much to achieve with his art practice and is intent on enjoying the journey. “It’s like building blocks that develop over time. You don’t become a pop sensation overnight. You just work away at what you do and slowly you build a following.”

Despite attending his audition for Life of Pi with somewhat dubious intentions, Suraj Sharma’s nature attracted the attention of the casting crew. His brother had been asked to audition for the film and Suraj agreed to tag along for support, lured by his brother’s promise of a free sandwich afterwards. Suraj was asked to audition on the day and, despite his lack of acting experience, his dream of a free lunch quickly morphed into acting ambition after he was offered the part of Pi. In the film, Pi, the son of a zookeeper, is travelling aboard a boat full of animals when he finds himself stranded at sea on a life raft with a Bengal tiger for company. Unexpectedly, he begins to develop a close bond with the formidable creature.
As the daughter of a professor and a real estate agent, acting wasn’t the most obvious career path for Kerry Washington. Nonetheless, as a teenager she was part of a theatre troupe and honed her skills by studying acting. Her first film appearance was in Our Song, but some of her better-known roles were as a savvy teenage mother in Save the Last Dance and as the wife of Ray Charles (played by Jamie Foxx) in Ray. In the Civil War-era film Django Unchained, Kerry and Jamie once again play a husband-and-wife team, named Broomhilda and Django respectively. The couple are separated by the slave trade, but Django manages to pair up with bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) in an attempt to rescue his wife.
It often happens that a change of scenery can put things into perspective. Such was the case for British actor James D’Arcy, who spent a year working in the drama department of a Perth school after he finished his own schooling. During this time, James developed a taste for acting and he returned to London to study at the famed London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In Hitchcock, a film that looks at the making of Alfred Hitchcock’s most revered film, Psycho, James plays actor Anthony Perkins. Transitioning from film set to Alfred’s home, Hitchcock takes a holistic approach to the story, examining the trials and tribulations of making the film, as well as the relationship between Alfred and his wife, Alma Reville.

Daily life presents a succession of delights and quandaries, each blurring into one another as the days quickly rush by. Emerging local theatre company AniLuca has based its debut theatre performance on this idea, and draws upon universal experiences to delve into the subtle nuances of society. A series of vignettes traces tales from childhood, to the perils of love, the traps of routine and the sorrow of death. To deliver an underground experience, the show will be performed in the clandestine Bird Studio space.
Canvassing the realms of exotic, psychedelic, electronic and pop-rock sounds, Django Django’s musical style is difficult to pinpoint. Catchy beats race below the reverberation of a guitar and pensive lyrics, creating a musical fusion that both intrigues and captivates. After releasing its first self-titled album, the band will be playing at The Falls Music & Art Festival, before performing a side show at The Zoo. Django Django’s shows are garnering a reputation for fervour, oversized tambourines and a myriad of instruments.
The alter ego of Australian journalist and comedian Mark Trevorrow, Bob Downe is a flamboyant polyester-clad media personality who shot to fame while hosting the fictional morning show, Good Morning Murwillumbah. After dabbling in cabaret, comedy and acting, Bob is now treating audiences to a taste of his singing prowess. Bob Downe: 20 Golden Greats is Bob’s new solo show, filled with a range of catchy classic pop, disco and rock hits. Bob promises that you will know every one of the songs he is preparing to perform.
Bewitching and often mind-boggling, magic is an art that creates a similar sense of wonder experienced by children still trying to grasp the curious ways of the world. Whether you believe in real magic, or think it’s all a matter of smoke and mirrors, you’re likely to be intrigued by seven magicians considered to be part of a crop of the world’s finest illusionists. While there won’t be any rabbits or top hats in their performances, each magician will perform tricks ranging from crafty illusions, to cunning escapes and deft levitation.

say hello to ...
JAMIE LEWIS SINGAPORE<>BRISBANE EXCHANGE DECEMBER 5–15, METRO ARTS
›I became an artist because ... I’m not sure when it happened, and so I’m not sure exactly why, but becoming an artist was the most natural progression. I found the medium of art and performance to have a conversation about the world as we find it, to question answers, to exchange perspectives, to unlearn and learn. These are all ways I want to live in this world, and my work has become the framework to do be able to do just that. ›My creativity comes from ... a deep-seated hunger for life, truth, other perspectives, excitement, change and a non-routine. ›I ‘fuel’ my creativity by ... meeting people and meeting more people. Talking, always sharing my current ideas and probing the ideas of my peers. By not being precious with ideas, and being generous with conversation. ›I love my job because ... it is never the same each time. And to respond to each and every idea, concept, or situation in a performance work – from the beginning to the end – is damn exciting and stimulating business. ›Through my work, I would like to ... offer an experience that may provide the participants, and me, different ways to look at the world and at ourselves within it; where we can be honest with a stranger, problematise common thoughts and share sentiments. ›Favourite author: Milan Kundera ›Director that inspires me: Theatre director Tadashi Suzuki ›Most played on my iPod: Feist ›Favourite actor: Robert Downey, Jr ›Filmmaker I most admire: Peter Greenaway ›Favourite designer: Jan Gehl map magazine is proud to be carbon neutral map magazine

ancient charm
MONTPELLIER, FRANCE
Having endured the footsteps of some of history’s most imposing figures (including Nostradamus) during its 1000-year-old existence, the cobblestone streets of Montpellier’s medieval quarter are the bearers of many a secret. Basking in the glow of the Mediterranean sun on the southeast coast of France, these days the city’s slow pace of life and temperate seaside climate have made it an enclave for the creatively inclined, its streets filled with a lively energy fuelled by a strong culture of music, dance, art and general joie de vivre.
The echo of my footsteps against the ancient cobblestones bounces about the walls of the narrow street in the heart of Montpellier’s medieval quarter. The ancient neighbourhood is an undulating cluster of winding, slender laneways, clandestine plazas, and secret gardens known only to those who live around their periphery. A gentle trickle of a fountain soon joins the rhythm of my footsteps. It’s 10:00 am but the streets are virtually empty; in true Mediterranean style, it seems the town’s denizens truly appreciate the virtues of a leisurely sleep-in. The inherently slow pace of life is infectious. My wandering soon becomes a gentle mosey as I stop to peek through hidden archways, trail my fingertips along crumbling walls and marvel at the swirls of the Baroque architecture that coexist amiably with stoic medieval structures. With no particular place to be, I allow myself to get lost, strolling aimlessly while enjoying the pinch of the autumn chill against my cheeks, as an ochre palette of leaves flutters delicately to the ground. Soon life begins to stir from within the venerable walls and I am roused from my daydream by the sonorous lilt of a cello emanating from a window above me. As I stroll further, I soon realise that an infectious musical spirit pulses throughout the city. A suited man sporting a jaunty cravat wanders past me singing happily to himself (and anyone in earshot). Another fedora-clad gent whistles a carefree ditty as he pedals his rattling old bicycle along the
52 map magazine
uneven street. A slender young dancer, well-worn ballet shoes slung casually from her shoulder, glides gracefully along to a dulcet melody in her imagination. A few hours later, passing clouds begin to mute the sparkle of the Mediterranean sun and I take refuge from the pique of the chill in a little brocante, or vintage furniture shop. Filled to the brim with preloved treasures of all sorts, from old baking utensils, to weathered tomes and a weary Underwood typewriter, the petite enclave is akin to stumbling upon the menagerie of possessions belonging to an aesthetically astute great aunt. A tiny room off to the side manifests as an intimate cafe space – a sundry cluster of tables, chairs and banquettes, bathing in the glow of elegant chandeliers that once hung above the soirees of someone equally as genteel. Edith Piaf croons from hidden speakers tucked away behind the collection of weathered homewares, making the entire setting irresistibly French. I take the opportunity to indulge in a spot of epicurean respite, tucking into an almond and chocolate tart made all the more decadent by lashings of raspberry coulis. Later I wander back to my apartment as the late afternoon glow peeks from behind the clouds. A grand flock of birds embarks on a graceful aerial routine, soaring and twirling in perfect unison against the setting sun. I pass a group of dapper old gents playfully cajoling each other over a game of petanque and glasses of pastis. They doff
THE WANDERLUST ISSUE DECEMBER12/JANUARY13

their flat caps gallantly in my direction, wishing me a bon après-midi before returning to their friendly bout of boules. I arrive at the imposing front door of my building, an ageing beauty that is part of what was once a 17th-century convent, and later used as a prison during Napoleon’s reign, but now enjoys a more pleasant existence as the home of Montpellier’s dance company. I plod up the steep, spiral staircase – my weary legs thankful that my abode is on the first floor – and revel in the cosy burst of warm air as I open the door. A few minutes later, as the kettle boils contentedly, I nudge open the tall windows that look out over the streetscape below. The compact girth of the street means I have a perfect view into my neighbour’s kitchen across the way and we exchange pleasantries from our respective sides of the street. My hands wrapped around my steaming cup of tea, I settle into the large nook of the windowsill, perched above the goings on below. As I take in the charming details of my tiny French dwelling, I imagine the countless people who might have taken a similar perch on this windowsill during its centuries of existence. Thoughts of the conversations, the dreams, the memories and yearnings that have taken place within these walls are a strange comfort. I feel honoured to be playing a small role of my own in the story. Settling back into the window frame, I savour the moment, closing my eyes as the gentle caress of a piano echoes through the street.

CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTHSIDE
HEINZ MEATS
feast
At the heart of yuletide festivities is the over-indulgent Christmas feast. Treat your friends and family this year with a smorgasbord of delicious options from Heinz Meats. The butcher uses traditional methods when preparing meats to form the most succulent and tender cuts. Christmas hams are created in a traditional manner – a 24-hour process of trimming, salting, smoking, cooking and drying. This is done using a smokehouse and mixture of natural ground spices. Due to the popularity of these whole- and halflegs of ham, there are limited numbers available, so book yours early. 611 Stanley Street, Woolloongabba T. 3391 3530 heinzmeat@bigpond.com

The furniture business has spent the past 20 years forming unique contemporary items to decorate homes around the nation. Each piece of furniture is designed and custom-made in Melbourne to exacting standards by the experienced team. Take a trip to Jardan’s flagship store in Fortitude Valley and you will be able to explore the complete range of furniture and curated display of artisanal accessories that the design emporium has to offer. With the festive season just around the corner, Jardan can also help you with your Christmas shopping – why not place a ribbon-adorned piece of furniture under the Christmas tree of the person who has everything?
Leave a lasting impression with the Lannah Dunn Monogram ring. Incorporating the world’s most precious metals, the Monogram ring is crafted from sterling silver or solid gold. Using century-old techniques, the molten metal is fashioned into the final masterpiece and, to add a personal touch, your own initials are then engraved onto the central plaque – creating a stunning combination of quality and artistry. A lovely gift for the ladies, and also for the gents. Make this Christmas one to remember with one for her, and one for him. As a Lannah Dunn Monogram ring is given to a loved one in celebration of a special birthday, anniversary or graduation, an heirloom is quietly being created. Sterling-silver rings are available from $99, or choose 9ct rose, yellow or white from $299. Have your initials engraved for $20 per initial.
