WHY? There is a considerable increase in artistic projects that aim to engage in societal activity. These projects and activities are often managed by artists or social workers with hardly any managerial knowledge. The current art and cultural management programs, on the other hand, mainly concentrate on providing skills to engage in “art for art’s sake” projects. However, by developing the current master’s degree programs that have proven their quality and popularity, a specialization on managing art & society activities would be an efficient way to respond to the identified demand.

WHAT IS MAPSI ABOUT? Managing Arts Projects with Societal Impact (MAPSI) refers to a specialization in management of artistic projects with societal impact, and aims to create an international network focusing on educating cultural managers and facilitators to manage and mediate artistic and cultural projects with societal impact. MAPSI integrates the transnational and interdisciplinary fields of art, management and societal impact by developing a novel understanding on the interaction between art and society and increasing the skills and competences of future cultural managers to foster the valuable interface.

OBJETIVES  Create an innovative field of specialization in the context of art/cultural management master’s programs that train the future managers and mediators for artistic projects with societal impact.  Develop new teaching materials and content of high quality that contribute to the European arts/cultural management education.  Build up a conception of new integrated models for interactive study and internships.

WHAT COMES NEXT? Study and Guide Books are on the way! Two important outcomes of the MAPSI project – Study and Guide Book – will be published late autumn and shared with wider audiences. The Study Book is targeted mainly for students of cultural management, cultural policy and social services and it can be used as a course book for learning how to manage arts projects with societal impact. The Study Book provides also new insights and a structured way of teaching the topic. The book consists of three parts: (I) Perspectives on art and societal impact, giving a general frame to the topic of managing projects with societal impact (incl. ethics, impact, policy); (II) Managing societally influential art projects, helping to understand the different managerial aspects in art projects (incl. leadership and evaluation) (III) Case Studies, giving concrete examples on the subject. Guide Book will target the professionals, developers and policy makers in art and social fields. The Guide Book concludes the main aspects of the materials presented in the Study Book. It highlights, for example, the key results, describes the content of the curriculum in managing art projects with societal impact and the new internship model to be used as tool of sustainability. Both publications will be available online. Piloting of the MAPSI E‐course Development of the learning content to the virtual learning environment has gone in hand with the development of the Study Book. In November 2015 MAPSI will pilot e‐course that aims to deepen the knowledge on the subject. We expect to have 10 students from 5 universities to give feedback on our e‐course. While going through the e‐course the student will gain understanding on the specificities relating to the art’s societal impact and its effect on management. They gain practical examples and need to fulfill exercises to approach managing art projects with social impact. The student will analyze case study relating to art projects that aim for societal impact. As a result, the student is able to apply the conceptual and practical tools necessary to analyze, develop and manage projects on the context of art projects with societal impact. After piloting the e‐ course will be opened to some extent to other universities. MAPSI final conference in Bilbao in January 2016 In January 2016, MAPSI conference will be held in Bilbao, Spain. The public conference day in Bilbao concentrates on the technology driven developments and its impact on the society. The conference will further offer the opportunity to discuss on the field some relevant aspects of the urban and societal impact of cultural projects. Some study visits and receptions are being planned. BILBAO METROPOLI 30 will offer a presentation on the role of cultural programmes on the design of urban policies in Bilbao during the last 20 years. A visit to DSS2016 ‐SAN SEBASTÍAN (European Capital of Culture for the year 2016) will be a wonderful opportunity to share experiences of Helsinki, Turku and Tallinn (cities that hosted the event in the past), focusing on societal impact. Keep online!
