MAPSI Summer School Helsinki, on 25­30 August 2014

MAPSI project’s first pilot, the Summer School, took place in Helsinki, Finland on 25­30 August 2014. In all, 19 students from project partner universities in Finland, Estonia and Spain participated the Summer School.

During the course students heard lectures and presentations about economic and social impacts of art projects and how to manage them. In addition a great emphasis on the course was on working with practical case studies. Five student groups analysed five cases that related to different aspects of managing art projects with societal impact. The analysis included a final presentation and a written report. Cases were about Russian Theatre in Estonia, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s Godchildren Project, Community Art Project “The Blue Kites of Melilla”, Museum of Plaster Casts of Bilbao and Smart textiles formation from an artistic idea to a product.

Visits to cultural institutions supported lectures and analysing the cases during the

week. Students visited for example the Helsinki City workshops for unemployed (Uusix verstaat) and young persons (Happi). They also heard about the audience work programs of Art Museum Ateneum and Contemporary Art Museum Kiasma.

According to feedback student gave, free time and social program they could have had more. At the time of Summer School the Helsinki Festival Week was on, and on the little free time the students had, they could luckily spend on a high quality cultural program. Also the e­learning platform that was used to support the studies appeared to be a little complicated, but as a whole students and staff were very satisfied for Summer School. This was really good experience and gave a good base for MAPSI practical co­operation and further development.

E­Learning Platform for MAPSI Summer School For MAPSI Summer School we piloted our e­learning platform based on Edutizer.

Edutizer based e­learning platform enabled us to create a single central repository for all study materials including study cases, supporting articles as well as lecturers' presentations. Through the personal access to the e­learning platform students are able to download all the study materials, upload their own homeworks, see their grades and also comment and ask questions about uploaded materials. As the helpful tool for students Edutizer is sending reminding e­mails before the important homework deadlines, as the discipling tool for students it does not allow to upload homework after the official deadline. One of the useful function of the system is feedback link.

Hopefully this the functionality with allows students to tell what they really think, lecturers to get know what students really think and hopefully future students to somehow benefit from that information exchange.

MAPSI ­ "Managing Art Projects with Societal Impact" Conference in Tallinn Preliminary call for papers

The first MAPSI (Managing Art projects with Societal Impact) international conference, held in Tallinn, July 7th 2015, aims to bring together researchers, academic and educators as well as practitioners interested in the topic, managing art project with societal impact. We are focusing on contributions where arts and cultural issues are managed to achieve public and societal

objectives from various disciplines; all management approaches, economics, cultural policy, social sciences and art. Along the conference also a small academy­based music showcase is planned.

MAPSI conference fosters international approaches and testimonies to the benefit of all the academic and practitioners community in art and cultural management with societal focus building a novel network around the phenomena.

We welcome people from the domains of art, marketing and management, economics, sociology, cultural policy, social work etc. to join the discussions. For research sessions researchers, academic and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for paper or poster presentations or a performance. Proposals from any relevant discipline will be considered, providing an original academic or practical contribution to the study or education of arts and cultural management with societal impact. Various sectors of the arts and cultural industries (performing arts and festivals, heritage, museums and visual arts, film production and distribution, book publishing, recording, broadcasting, audio­visual media and multimedia, design) are welcome.

Abstracts of 500 words can be uploaded, through the website: mapsi.eu starting from 01.01.2015 and no later February 28th 2015. Extended abstracts of 2000­ 3000 words are due May 11th 2015.
