Dear Reader, We finally launched Qatar Car Award and we are eager to start working on this amazing project for the next year after all the success it got. Congratulations to all the winners, you can check them on www.qatarcaraward.com Our main story in this issue is not like any other adventure. To have your breakfast in Austria, your lunch in Italy and your dinner in Germany cannot be accomplished easily but with the all-new Bentley Continental GT it was a walk in the park. Another road trip took us with Mclaren to Jabal Jais to experience the longest zip line in the world. Did I try it? Why would I if I got a higher dose of adrenaline climbing up the mountain with the Mclaren 570S Spider. Our editor-in-chief took the roaring Range Rover Sport SVR on a road trip in UK. Tons of good news and on top of it the launch of the first Roll-Royce SUV, the Cullinan. Yes, a new international debate has started, Cullinan or Bentayga. Well, time will tell. Elsewhere, we test drive the MG ZS, the brand is now available in Qatar and my generation surely remembers it but is it as good as it used to be? Enjoy the issue,

HOFELE BESPOKE BASED ON THE MERCEDES-BENZ GLS 63

I

t was only one month ago that HOFELE-Design showed us their version of the Mercedes-Benz GLS 400, at that time they said that they had something a bit “Special” in production.

A ‘Special Edition’ GLS 63 given the HOFELE exterior and interior treatment by the new department at HOFELE called BESPOKE. This vehiclewas designed and commissionedby itsowner to be a unique combination of aggressive sporty design with anultra-high luxury interior finished in Aston Martin Chancellor Red Leather, trimmed in the Maybach style –This perforated and quilted nappa leather with double diamond stitching is becoming aHOFELE trade mark and the deep red leather with the owners initials embossed into the headrests looks fantastic, especially against the black exterior.

OFELE is a German Tuning company specialising in H Mercedes-Benz based vehicles that has been around for over 30 years and is now developing an entirely new range of exterior and interior enhancements for many of Stuttgart’s current and future models. We are told coming soon will be a HOFELE based on the new G – Wagon - can’t wait..!!

Flared wheel arches with custom carbon finishers and the 23” wheels are the most noticeable exterior enhancements. More subtle is the treatment given to the front bumper and rear exhaust valance as well as the rear spoiler. Somehow HOFELE manages to put all the elements together in a way that really enhances the overall design. We are also told that under the skin there are few surprises, including an advanced exhaust control valve system that makes the already great sounding V8 biturbo sound even more outrageous, but we will have to wait our turn for a test drive to experience it. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 12 29

lfardan Automobiles, the official BMW Group importer in Qatar, hosted an exclusive preview of the new BMW M5 last weekend at Losail Circuit Sports Club during the Semi Final of the MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix 2018.

This change of tack sees the M5 exploring new dynamic dimensions and offering greater everyday practicality in all driving conditions. Another ingredient in the car’s supreme traction in all road and weather conditions is the Active M Differential at the rear axle, which also works fully variably and has a locking effect between 0 and 100 per cent. Providing ample power for the new BMW M5 is a 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. LEXUS LC 500H RECEIVES BEST SPORT COUPE FROM MAQINA & ARAB MOTORS IN THE 2018 QATAR CAR AWARD QATAR CAR AWARD RECOGNIZES AUTOMOTIVE ACHIEVEMENT IN THE INDUSTRY Leading automotive magazines Maqina and Arab Motors, recognized automotive achievements in the first edition of the Qatar Car Award held at St. Regis hotel on May 9

Q

atar Car Award is a yearly special edition and award ceremony put together by two of the leading automotive magazines in the Middle East, Maqina and Arab Motors magazines. The event is organized to recognize automotive achievement after putting most of the vehicles in Qatar into their paces, subsequently crowning the best. The first edition of the event was held on May 9 at the St. Regis Hotel. The automotive industry in Qatar and other nations in the region has witnessed tremendous growth in recent times with more car brands and other such operators in the industry making their way into the region. However, the efforts of car manufacturers and dealers have not been particularly recognized by the media and the outside world in general. Consequently, Maqina and Arab Motors have partnered to organize the first of its kind event to recognize the achievements of car brands and dealers. Lexus Qatar receives the award of best Sport Coupe for the Lexus LC500.

The emotional designs and high-performance models issued by Lexus in the last few years prefaced a new chapter for the brand, one that begins now with the arrival of the all-new 2018 Lexus LC flagship performance coupe. The Lexus LC is a powerful, emotionally stirring realization of the vision of Lexus master driver for a flagship production coupe that echoes the spirit of the hand-built Lexus LFA supercar and delivers the visual impact of the Lexus LF-LC concept. While maximizing the fundamental taste of the LF-LC, we applied completely different specifications to create a design that goes beyond the concept – a design that will captivate you as soon as you see it. Pursuing beautiful design and elaborating superior performance are two very similar aspects. Beauty is the identity of Lexus’ design. Every feature of the LC is the result of an integrated approach to design and engineering. The entire team has worked together, including engineers and designers, to create such a great car. “The Lexus LC is a flagship coupe which represents the evolution of Lexus as a lifestyle brand that will surprise and delight customers. The car symbolizes the beginning of a new phase for Lexus, which is all about creating greater synergy between engineering and design. The LC makes the strongest statement yet about the brand’s future direction, and is the result of painstaking craftsmanship, attention to detail and an advanced, future-oriented approach to engineering. It’s a car that offers a pleasurable driving experience which enhances the user’s lifestyle.

ALFARDAN AUTOMOBILES UNVEILS THE ALL-NEW BMW X2 DURING EXCLUSIVE EVENT IN MALL OF QATAR

lfardan Automobiles, the official BMW Group importer in Qatar, has welcomed the eagerly anticipated BMW X2 to its showroom. With a design oozing individuality from every pore and a sporty suspension set-up, the BMW X2 pushes back boundaries, puts a firework under old habits and brings previously uncharted levels of driving pleasure to this vehicle segment at Mall of Qatar.

Rabih Ataya, General Manager of Alfardan Automobiles, commented: “We have been waiting with great enthusiasm to reveal the all new BMW X2 to the Qatari market and are thrilled that it’s finally here. This Sports Activity Coupe truly goes above and beyond any rival past or present in bringing joy and driving pleasure to the segment. It’s a car that appeals primarily to a young, extrovert and active target group who value individuality and genuine fun at the wheel. We invite everyone to join us for

The bold, uncompromising nature of the new BMW X2 is evident at first sight. This vehicle stands out from the crowd in any setting. Even next to its bigger brothers, the BMW X4 and X6, the BMW X2 makes a wholly distinctive impression. The main contributing factor here is the car’s exterior design, which essentially combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of a BMW X model.

48 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

The petrol engine offered from launch: the BMW X2 sDrive20i petrol model with 141 kW / 192 hp (fuel consumption combined: 5.9 – 5.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 134 – 126 g/km)*

IT IS SHORTER AND MORE THAN SEVEN CENTIMETRES LOWER THAN THE BMW X1 YET HAS THE SAME WHEELBASE

“The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, in describing the new BMW X2. “Its standalone vehicle concept brings a new, fresh and exciting facet of the BMW to the compact segment.”

Another striking detail more typical of a BMW coupe is the placement of the brand logo on the C-pillars. Reminiscent of legendary BMW models such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL, this is another element that underscores the sporting aspirations of the BMW X2.

On the road, the BMW X2 has the poise of an athlete in peak condition. This is true for the basic version and even more so for M Sport and M Sport X models. The BMW X2 M Sport X combines design elements from BMW M and the BMW X family. Eloquent looks, dynamic proportions. Above all, it is the BMW X2’s proportions which create its expressive, dynamic demeanour. It is shorter and more than seven centimetres lower than the BMW X1 yet has the same wheelbase. Featuring short overhangs, it also has a stretched, coupe-style roofline and slim window graphic. A distinctive character that departs from the BMW script. Many of the design details emphasise the BMW X2’s standalone nature while simultaneously and unequivocally signalling its membership of the X family. The time-honoured BMW kidney grille is just one example, turning the familiar trapezoidal shape on its head and instead widening from top to bottom. This is the first time this design detail has seen the light of day on a modern BMW.

The 2018 GL1800 Gold Wing takes a new direction and is brand new from the wheels-up. It still has an evocative, flat six-cylinder engine that delivers an avalanche of torque and power, and it still remains Honda’s flagship premium tourer, loaded with features that allow two people to ride in style. Sharing a common engine and chassis platform, the new ‘Wing will be available as the base model GL1800 Gold Wing, and as a ‘Tour’ edition with top box, which will also offer a version equipped with DCT and air bag. Depending on the variant, up to 48kg has been saved compared to the previous model.

Optimised for size, the new flat six-cylinder engine has lost none of its power, torque and addictive delivery. Throttle By Wire has been added, with 4 rider modes; TOUR, SPORT, ECON and RAIN. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) maintains rear wheel traction while the suspension damping and Combined Brake System (CBS) alter depending on mode selected. Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Idling Stop add ease of use and improve fuel efficiency. The manual transmission is now 6-speed, while the new Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) features 7-speeds, with clutch feel, shift speed and rpm range of up/downshifts tailored specifically to each riding mode. It also features a creep forward and back function. The manual machine employs the same reverse system as the previous design. The performance improvement is matched by even greater levels of relaxation: the stylish, aerodynamically-efficient fairing channels air around the rider and the electric screen adjusts for preference; the seats provide all-day comfort. New features like the smart key system, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity bring even more convenience. STYLING & EQUIPMENT The new Gold Wing is a completely different proposition and replaces the relaxed lines of the outgoing model with a more honed, athletic ethos.

Also on display is the motorcycle itself – the double wishbone front suspension, flat six-cylinder engine, exhausts – in all their functional beauty. Drawn together the design elements create cutting edge style, underpinned by incredible levels of engineering and electronics. Screen angle and height adjustment is step-less. Available as options are a larger screen, a fully-adjustable deflector for the arms and upper body and fixed deflectors for the lower legs and feet. All lighting is LED. The lower portion of the headlights use five polished optical lenses on both sides to create a Jewel-Eye low beam light signature. Using high beam (in the upper portion) creates a stereoscopic impression. The front indicators are housed in the mirrors and the indicators also auto-cancel; the system compares front and rear wheel speed difference and calculates when to cancel the indication relative to the riding situation.

Luxurious instrumentation creates a unique cockpit. Different low-contrast colours with dark tones are applied to the dials, of which the peripheral areas form cone-shaped slopes to create a feeling of depth. A ring with a metal texture surrounds each dial, and the graduations glow in LED, giving concrete depth and a calm, cool image. The 7-inch full-color TFT liquid crystal display screen provides infotainment-related information (for the audio systems) as well as managing the HSTC and suspension adjustment. Information is displayed in differentiated segments in a very functional order, so the rider can get all the relevant data with the minimum of eye movement.

The rear top box of the ‘Tour’ versions will hold two full-face helmets; combined with the panniers 110L storage capacity is available.

Operation of the luggage is simplified. With the smart key present a push button opens the panniers and top box. It is also possible to temporarily unlock the luggage via remote control; the unlock button on the smart key enables the passenger to instantly access the saddlebags and the rear luggage box. Hydraulic dampers smooth the opening and closing. Pushing and holding the call button results in the indicators flashing.

Capacity of the fuel tank is 4 litres less at 21 litres. But as the new Gold Wing is so much lighter and more aerodynamic, improved fuel economy of 5.6 litres/100km means tank range is similar to the previous design.

The Gold Wing is now compatible with Apple CarPlay, so the rider can utilise the personalised information and content inside their iPhone, such as telephone numbers and music playlists. Bluetooth connectivity has been adopted and a USB cable can also be plugged in. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 12 53

CHASSIS The new Gold Wing’s die-cast aluminium twin beam frame is designed to package the engine in a tighter space, 40mm further forward. Its structural thickness has been optimised in each area to deliver a smooth and stable ride, from walking speed upwards, whether on tight city streets or out on the open road. The frame and swingarm together are 2kg lighter than the previous design. Rear spring preload is also now electrically adjusted. It’s an intuitive – rather than numerical – system. Separate from the four riding modes, there are four settings of preload relative to load from soft to hard: single rider; rider with luggage; rider with pillion, and rider with pillion fully loaded with luggage. The setting is displayed on the TFT screen and adjusted via switch. ENGINE Core to the previous Gold Wing’s appeal was its turbine-smooth flat six-cylinder engine, which produced torque from low rpm with a distinctive power delivery and feel that quickly became addictive.

54 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

To realise the handling ambitions of the new chassis the 1,833cc engine too has been redrawn. Still as a horizontally-opposed flat six, but now with four valves per cylinder rather than two, much more compact in size and 6.2kg lighter. Peak power of 93kW arrives @ 5,500rpm, with peak torque of 170Nm delivered @ 4,500rpm. The bore size of 73mm (from 74mm) has been optimised to stroke of 73mm and bore pitch shortened 9mm; the left and right cylinders are offset 4mm and the cylinder sleeves are now aluminium. Compression ratio is set at 10.5:1. TOUR mode is the base setting for comfort and power. It gives a direct 100% opening ratio between throttle grip and throttle body butterfly, with ‘default’ damping and front/ rear brake force distribution. SPORT serves up the highest throttle to butterfly ratio and delivers strong acceleration, with firmer damping and rear brake lever pressure. ECON mode offers maximum fuel economy and easy cruising, with lower throttle to

butterfly ratio and default damping and brake force. RAIN turns the dial down to suit wet and slippery conditions, with lowest throttle to butterfly ratio, default braking force distribution and soft suspension damping. In all four riding modes HSTC constantly allows controllable acceleration in slippery conditions. To complement the engine’s deep bass signature the exhausts now emit a powerful throb, without excessive noise. The crosssectional areas of the exhaust pipes have been reduced 20% for two out of the six cylinders, bringing about the change in sound volume and depth. The ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) combines the generator and starter motor into one component, with the generator effectively becoming the starter motor when supplied with reverse power. Key characteristics of the Idling Stop system are the ultra-quiet start-up of the engine thanks to the use of ISG, and the smooth

NEWS

starting feeling achieved through a combination of DCT and TBW control. When stopping at a traffic light with the Idling Stop system on, the engine automatically stops after three seconds and, when restarting, the rider only needs to turn the throttle, which immediately starts the engine. Hill starts on a conventional motorcycle often involve simultaneously releasing the brakes, opening the throttle and engaging the clutch according to the grade of the slope. To ease this effort, the new manual transmission Gold Wing has adopted Hill Start Assist (HSA). The new 6-speed manual gearbox lowers the engine speed when cruising at 100km/h, compared to the previous 5-speed design. It’s also fitted with a ‘cam damper’ between the clutch and transmission, separating each inertial mass, reducing noise and improving shift quality/durability.

DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION Honda’s unique Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is a natural fit for the new Gold Wing engine and development revolved around DCT as the base. This is the third all-new generation of the system and the first to have 7-speeds, specifically designed for long-distance cruising; it’s also extremely smooth and fast shifting. And lighter than the 5-speed manual transmission fitted to the previous design. The new Gold Wing’s DCT features a 1.8km/h forward Walking Mode with reverse of 1.2km/h, operated instantly from a +/- switch on the left handlebar. The all-new Honda Gold Wing is available at the Honda showroom located at Khalifa street near National mosque and TV signal. For more information, call 800 8123 or visit www.honda.com.qa.

MAZDA CELEBRATES 50 MILLION VEHICLES MADE IN JAPAN

M

azda Motor Corporation has announced that cumulative production in Japan reached 50 million units on May 15. The company held a commemorative ceremony recently at its Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi prefecture. Representative Director, President and CEO Masamichi Kogai, executive officers and union representatives were in attendance. The 50 million-unit milestone was achieved 86 years and seven months after Mazda produced its first three-wheeled truck in October 1931. “Mazda began making cars 86 years ago, and now we’ve reached 50 million units of production in Japan. Even making 1 million cars a year, it would take 50 years to reach this milestone, showing just how long Mazda’s history is,” said Kogai at the ceremony. “Moving forward, Mazda will continue to build a strong brand through a variety of initiatives. Our plants in Hofu and Hiroshima will continue to evolve and act as parent factories, rapidly deploying their technologies and skills to our overseas plants. I’d like us all to work together to ensure these plants continue to embody the kind of technical prowess that does justice to Japan’s proud history of Monotsukuri.” Mazda began its journey as an automaker in 1931, when it started producing three-wheeled trucks in Hiroshima. In 1960 it commenced production of the R360 Coupe micro-mini, marking a bold entry into the passenger car market. Vehicle manufacture started at Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi in 1982, and domestic production duties have since been shared between the Hofu and Hiroshima Plants. The production techniques and flexible production systems developed at these plants have helped Mazda to grow its business. Mixed production lines capable of producing different models on a single line enable manufacture of multiple models at low volumes, a breakthrough in the traditional tradeoff between product variety and competitiveness and volume efficiency.

In 2016 and 2017, Mazda Motor Company took steps to increase its production flexibility for crossover models and create a framework capable of responding quickly to changes in demand. The domestic plants take the lead with Mazda’s global car-making; production techniques and technologies established in Japan are then rolled out to overseas facilities. Mazda aims to sell 1,660,000 cars this fiscal year and plans to establish a global production framework capable of manufacturing two million units annually by fiscal year ending March 2024. Massproduction of vehicles featuring next-generation technologies and design is slated to start in 2019, and Mazda will continue expanding its production framework in an effort to get cars to customers as quickly as possible. Aspiring to create a world in which cars can co-exist sustainably with people, society and the earth, Mazda will continue to enrich people’s live through various touchpoints, including the manufacture of high-quality cars, and become a brand with which customers feel a strong emotional bond. National Car Company(NCC), the sole agent for Mazda vehicles in Qatar since 1971, have contributed significantly over the last 5 decades in establishing the premium Japanese brand through an efficient network of sales and aftersales facilities as well as a strong team of qualified and skilled personnel. National Car Company offers the entire range of new generation Mazda sedans, SUVs and pick-ups displayed in a state of the art showroom located in Fereej Al Nasr which is open 7 days a week from 9 am to 9 pm except on Fridays when the showroom is open during evening hours.

It stands six feet of the ground and clocks in at a whopping 5,800 pounds, which is 400 more than Bentley’s Bentayga and Range Rover, its closest competitors. It’s also longer and wider than those vehicles, with angular vertical and horizontal lines that make it looks straight-up ferocious. Rolls says the Cullinan is meant to attract the “younger, very successful high-net-worth individuals who are heavily engaged in the experience economy.” (Heck, in early press materials they referred to it only as a “high-sided vehicle” before finally relenting in their latest release and using the term “SUV.”) In a first for a Rolls, there’s all-wheel drive and an all-wheel-steering system — so all that weight can move swiftly on Rodeo Drive and the dunes of Dakar with equal poise. Its top speed is 250 km/h. It’s certainly got enough power. The all-terrain, high-bodied vehicle comes equipped with a 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 engine that puts out 563 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. It’s the second Rolls-Royce to be built using the the company’s new all-aluminum architecture, which gave us the Phantom VIII.

74 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

Its traditional Parthenon grille was made from hand-polished stainless steel, and sits high and regal on the car. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy mascot also also enjoys a higher vantage point than usual. The Cullinan can wade in water up to 21 inches high. The interior is where things get especially Rolls-y. The Cullinan fits five people, though this thing’s so huge all of them could be pro wrestlers. The back seat comes in two configurations: a lounge seat layout that’s the size of most sofas, and an individual seat option that two offers two separate chairs, divided by a huge rear centre console featuring a drinks cabinet replete with Rolls whiskey glasses, champagne flutes, and a refrigerator. It’s also got a rear glass partition wall to separate luggage from passengers. With the rear seats folded, the load capacity raises to 1930 litres — essentially more space than a standard New York bachelor apartment. Perhaps the raddest feature on the Collinan is right at the very back. You’ve got the option to pull out a retractable table and leather chairs, which instantly transform the vehicle’s tailgate into an outdoor dining lounge, or what Rolls calls “the best seat in the house.” If it sounds crazy, that’s because it is. Crazy amazing.

THE ROARING ROVER RANGEY’S SVR EDITION JUST GOT SVRier BY: ADEL HABIB

rom the vantage point of the brand new Range Rover Sport SVR’s cockpit, life looks more than good. This is, afterall, an SUV that JLR proudly proclaims: “the fastest, most powerful and most dynamically focused Land Rover ever produced.” (Interesting that they went with “Land Rover” there— hardly seems necessary, but I suppose it’s meant to remind us that this is, ultimately, one big happy family of SUVs). This is a Range Rover though, so it’s no slouch in the comfort department, except that it boasts the least comfortable seats in the contemporary Land Rover line.

80 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

The new flagship Range Rover Sport SVR puts enhanced focus on the performance of the most dynamic model in the Range Rover family, engineered to complement the core range using all the knowledge and expertise of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division. Under the bonnet, the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine is the most powerful in the brand’s history, producing 575PS and generating an impressive 700Nm of torque. That’s a hike of 25PS and enough to power the Range Rover Sport SVR from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

R O AD T R I P

Coupled with enhancements to the chassis, the new SVR delivers more dynamic handling without compromising its traditional comfort. The engineers at SVO focused on controlling pitch under heavy acceleration and braking, and changes to the damping hardware have improved turn-in, midcorner grip and body control. In addition to the enhanced driving experience, SVO has provided new visual cues to the model’s performance potential. The bonnet is a unique carbon fibre composite design for the first time, with integrated cooling vents that transform the front aspect of the vehicle.

Its purposeful profile transforms the SVR’s appearance and its lightweight construction delivers genuine dynamic benefits by reducing weight over the front axle. Customers can also choose a unique paint option that leaves the central section of the new bonnet’s carbon fibre weave exposed, creating an arresting high-performance aesthetic. Prominent new detailing on the front grille also catches the eye, while the side fender vents are finished in Gloss Black. Greater use of body-coloured detailing at the rear and the presence of an SVO badge in place of the Land Rover oval also help to mark out the SVR as something very special.

REVISED DESIGNS REFLECT “THETHEMODEL’S STATUS AS THE ULTIMATE HIGH-PERFORMANCE LUXURY SUV

A new front bumper design provides a discrete change to the SVR’s assertive appearance, with changes designed to improve brake cooling. All-new brake pads and discs provide enhanced performance at higher temperatures, ensuring the braking system is more resistant to fade during dynamic driving. The SVR is available with 21-inch alloy wheels, while a new 22-inch lightweight performance alloy design is also available in two colour finishes. These changes can be complemented by a series of additional design packs – most notably, the Carbon Fibre Exterior Pack, which incorporates tasteful detailing to the front bumper, grille, fender vents, mirror covers and tailgate. Cabin changes build on the enhancements to the core model with a sharper focus on driver and passenger comfort, allied with higher specification materials and finishes. From SVR-branded treadplates that illuminate as the driver climbs aboard, to the feel of the aluminium sports pedals beneath the driver’s feet, the improvements are aimed at enhancing every element of the driving experience. Supportive new lightweight Supersport seats create an athletic silhouette and provide exceptional comfort on long journeys. They also deliver a significant 30kg weight saving over the core seat and are heated in the front and rear as standard. Finished in high-quality perforated Windsor leather, the revised designs reflect the model’s status as the ultimate high-performance luxury SUV. Seat backs finished in satin black with an embossed SVR logo on the headrests also leave no doubt about the SVR’s exclusivity. The new seats also liberate more rear legroom and create the impression of a cosseting four-seat interior, while retaining flexible five-seat capability. By contrast,, the barely padded thrones of a vintage Defender will basically rattle your posterior off (I spent a chunk of my childhood riding in one) but of late the brand has been given to more rarified levels of upholstery. I say boast because these bum-huggers serve a clear purpose and, it’s not that the seats in the SVR are bad, it’s that they’re track ready buckets designed to hold your frame in place when you’re pulling serious G’s. Yes they’d be a tad confining for the nursery school run, unless you expect to unleash the fury of the SVR when lil’ boopsie is late for story time— but aside from price tag and fuel consumption, this is an otherwise uncompromising vehicle.

“ IT HANDLES DATE

NIGHT, OFF-ROADING, AND THE TRACK WITH EQUAL MEASURES OF PROFICIENCY

For instance, even though you sacrifice ease of egress and ingress, and might feel a little pinched after a few hundred km, the all important driver’s seat offers full 16-way electric adjustment. There’s all the fine leather, turned aluminium trim (carbon fibre is optional) and tech you’d expect in a vehicle dreamed up by the already luxurious (read special) brand’s Special Vehicle Operations— but I think we’re all here for something else: the power plant and driving dynamics. This is an SUV of almost cartoonish ability— it handles date night, off-roading, and the track with equal measures of proficiency. Sure, the owner who takes time out to practice all three in the car might be far and few in between (let’s face it, most of these beasts will be babied and coddled in warm garages) but leave it to our region to provide a few ambitious outliers. We didn’t take the SVR out on the dunes but I expect the SVR would fare about as well as the Range Rover Sport, as the ride height is precisely the same, and can be adjusted from 50mm in “access mode” up to 235mm for the trail or sands. This is where the inevitable bias of personal experience weighs against unabridged reporting— I’ve already had the pleasure of putting a Range Rover through the paces off road, and at a more substantial program. The SVR though, could be reviewed solely as an off-road vehicle and still merit a few pages of detailed coverage. This is not going to be that piece, not with that supercharged V8 so severely under-utilized for this type of driving. But then, the car’s trail credentials are an important part of the SVR’s specific context, as we need to remember that, while the SVR is many things, lightweight is not one of them at 2495 kg. JLR didn’t skimp on the off-road kit, as the four-wheel-drive system retains a low-range transfer case, lockable center differential, active roll-control system, air suspension, and wheel travel that matches the non-SVR version. Despite all of which, the Whitley car-maker reports that the SVR has netted the fastest lap time in its segment on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, at 8:14. That’s :20 better than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and, excuse the drool, an utterly jaw dropping feat. To be honest, even after enjoying the SVR on track, I was still surprised that it’s faster than, for instance, the X6. This isn’t because the SVR feels slower, but because it simply presents as a larger car. In fact BMW are already claiming that the X6 M will post faster times— but that is, for now, just talk. While the X6 drives more like a puffed up saloon, the SVR feels large and in charge, with brutal straight line acceleration more akin to say, Hellcat. Like that other fiery kitty (not to be confused with Jag’s bonkers F-Type R— more on that soon) the SVR is never shy about acknowledging its considerable mass, it just gives you an incredible set of tools to more or less feel like you’re defying gravity, dabbing the brakes, and swinging into the turns like Tarzan atop the world’s poshest vine.

sk anyone in Austria about the best road where you can put your driving skills on test and enjoy a breathtaking view at the same time and the answer would be the The Grossglockner High Alpine Road. It is the highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austria with an elevation of 2,504 m and provides a beautiful view of the Alpine divide.

88 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

In the automotive business, if you are invited to test drive on this particular road and that too, the all-new Bentley Continental GT, you just can’t deny the offer. This first drive review highlights our road trip from Austria to Italy and finally reaching Germany with the all-new 2019 Bentley Continental GT.

WE COULDN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THAT THE SHARP DESIGN OF THE NEW BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT IS BASED ON THE EXP 10 SPEED 6 AND DIFFERS LARGELY FROM ITS OLDER SIBLING

Exterior It’s 9 am and we are starting our day in Austria. The plan is to have breakfast in Austria, then drive to Italy for lunch and then take a flight to Germany for dinner. Talking about the Bentley Continental GT, the grand tourer was first introduced in 2003 to appeal to the rich clientele. Fast-forward to 2017, the all-new 2019

Bentley Continental GT was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show and is definitely better and more powerful than its predecessor. We were fortunate to get the orange color, which looked awesome under the shiny sun. Moreover, the ample illumination from the skies allowed us to examine the smooth aerodynamic shape.

THE ENGINE KEPT ON IMPRESSING AND WE COULD NOT STOP SINGING PRAISES FOR THE IT

We couldn’t help but notice that the sharp design of the new Bentley Continental GT is based on the EXP 10 Speed 6 and differs largely from its older sibling. The previous model had a box-like structure, which in no way was unbecoming, but the new simply looks a lot better. Since, it was early morning when we set out on or journey, we couldn’t test the potency of the Bentley headlights, which are a sight to behold.

Interior After having a more than adequate fan-girl moment with the car, we head out on our way to a roadside cafĂŠ for breakfast. While we were absorbing the details of the opulent interior, quite a few heads were turning outside as people admired the car in all its glory. The interior is riddled with various types of leather, wood accents and sparkly chrome, giving a pleasant and sumptuous appeal. After we were done with breakfast and had grabbed a few snacks for the road, we drove straight towards Italy. The Continental GT is great for a long drive, since the seats are electronically adjustable, it makes finding the comfy position much easier and the quilt like feel is certainly a deal-maker.

Normally people get bored on a road trip, but not us, because we had a 12.3-inch infotainment screen to enjoy our favorite tunes. Helping the entertainment system were Naim 2200W 18-speaker system, which are the best out of the three options Bentley offers in the Continental GT. There were two more screens, seamlessly put together, which created an illusion that all three were joined together as one. The other two panels showed a compass, so we don’t get lost on our way, an outside temperature gauge and a clock to keep track of time.

Engine Reaching Italy from Austria takes time, but even after accumulating for all the fuel stops and breaks along the way, we made it to Italy just in time for lunch! This could easily have been more if the Continental GT didn’t boast a highway fuel economy of 8.19 kmpl thanks to its cylinder deactivation technology, which transforms the 12-cylinder engine in to a 6-cylinders. When power was needed the engine responded equally well by activating all 12 of the available cylinders. We made lesser stops for fuel and that’s always a plus while on a road trip.

IT’S A LARGE CAR, BUT IT ISN’T BULKY OR OVERWHELMING ON THE ROAD

Exterior I like the way the G80 looks. I’ll start out by saying that. Genesis has got the proportions absolutely nailed. It’s a large car, but it isn’t bulky or overwhelming on the road. The long elongated hood, the long overhangs, the extended sloping roofline… everything has been designed to make the car as elegant and flowing as possible. If you like a car that’s a bit understated but still has lots of presence, the G80 Sport offers exactly that. The front fascia is dominated by this huge grille just below the Genesis logo. The front bumper is flanked by large air dams on each side, and a pretty substantial opening at the bottom too. The headlights do have some Mercedes-Benz-like elements, but they’re completely bespoke units. It’s a weird mix between luxury and sportiness. A good type of weird mix.

The engine kept on impressing and we could not stop singing praises for the engine. The 6.0-litre W12 gasoline engine makes 635 PS of power and 900Nm of torque, while being paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. It reacts in a blink of an eye, or more appropriately with a press on the throttle, taking the car from 0 -100 kmh in a paltry 3.7 seconds. We could have shortened the time further by accelerating the car to its top speed of 333 kmph, but that was neither safe nor possible due to the twists and turns of the road. Plus, it is much more enjoyable to delve in the magnificence of countryside Europe by driving at a moderate pace rather than rushing through the scenery experiencing only blurry lines outside.

Unfortunately, along our route, there was repair work being done, and we had to take a detour. The detour depicted a road well suited for an off-roader SUV, but since we only had the Continental GT, it had to suffice. And boy it did not disappoint. The folks at Bentley have fitted the new Continental GT with a brand-new suspension system, consisting of sophisticated airsuspension, better front and rear axle, adaptive dampers and anti-roll bars to ensure a comfortable experience even on the toughest surfaces. Furthermore, there is a new all-wheel driving system supporting the torque received from the huge engine. However, that is only when the situation become demanding, in normal cases all power goes straight to the rear wheels.

Verdict

We made it to Italy had our lunch and said our goodbyes to the awesome car. After that we got on a plane for Munich where we had our dinner. While on the airplane, we were feeling really nostalgic and sad, since the Continental experience was over, but excited as we had had the experience of a lifetime. If you are thinking of a road trip in Europe or in fact anywhere, the Bentley Continental GT is your car. It has the best of both worlds with its sport and luxury features. The plane taking off reminded us of the demonic acceleration of the Bentley. There was literally no difference between how a plane accelerates and how the Continental shoots off towards is impressive top speed. There is nothing to hate about the Grand Tourer except the fact that it costs a fortune. So, save up on your kidneys folks!

ubai houses some of the most exotic sports cars in the world, but it’s almost excruciating that you see all these million-dollar cars stuck in traffic. Even when there are empty roads, police presence is everywhere. Therefore, you can’t really enjoy the full fruits of driving a supercar. That’s why when we got the chance to drive the McLaren 570S Spider in the UAE, only one place came to mind, the $80 million-dollar road of the Jebel Jais mountains. It’s an impressively well- built road full of challenging hairpins just an hour drive away from Dubai, and there is literally no police there at all! Exterior Design We had a yellow colored 570S Spider, a fitting color for a car that looks like a wasp. Like the cherry on top, the supercar has dihedral doors that imitate the wings on a wasp as well as a carbon fiber lightweight body.

Although cars like this are common on Dubai roads, we were able to turn a few heads as we drove by. Perhaps, because to the untrained eye the 650S, the P1, and the 570S look very similar, or maybe because we had the roof tucked in under the blazing sun. We quickly realized the heat will be too much to bear and thus the roof was brought back on with a touch of a button. The plan was to drive on top have some snacks, enjoy the world’s longest zip line and come back. Therefore, following the set routine, we made our way to a store, grabbed some cold drinks and made our way towards Rais al Khaima where the mountainous road exists.

Engine Specification and Drive As soon as we entered the mountainous road, it felt like we were driving on clouds. This is as much a compliment for the road as it is for the car. Power delivery is instant and highly responsive, we didn’t feel at peril maneuvering crisscross through the hairpin turns and that is all thanks to the party happening under the hood. Hidden under the hood is a 3.8-liter V8 engine that purges out 570 PS. Power delivery is efficiently maintained with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, allowing the supercar to accelerate at breakneck speeds. On the straighter patches of the Jebel Jais, we went all out on the paddle and tested the car’s mettle. Boy does it move! 0 to 100 km took an impressive 3.2 seconds and with the Sports mode turned on we didn’t have to worry about traction. The cornering capability of the car is applaudable, it really feeds off of the lower center of gravity and pushes the car into the next turn seamlessly. The engine has so much potential, which was evident from the high revving shifts we made while climbing. We drove the car like teenagers discovering the treats of speed and adrenaline for the first time. However, we couldn’t keep this up for long as there were families enjoying picnics by the side of the road. This is surprising since the road leads to nowhere. Once we reached the top of the Jais mountain the sight was incredible. It was entirely different from what one would imagine standing atop a mountain. There were no lush green fields, but arid rocky hills with a hazy horizon, which is an uncommon scenery.

Interior Impression We made our way north of Dubai for about an hour and then slightly east towards the mountains. There are plenty of road signs pointing in the right direction, which can be used, but the navigation system in the 570S works equally well. The Spider is a compact car and we felt constricted, searching for space. Thankfully, our trip was short. The space inside is cozy even for two people and the boot is sufficient for 2 small bags. There is a minimal focus on leisure, but there are still some utilities like climate control AC for the blazing desert sun, highly important for the UAE temperature, USB ports and leather seats to keep things interesting.

Halfway through our destination, we enjoyed a few chips we bought from Dubai and enjoyed some desert music using the infotainment system. The infotainment system looks like an enlarged phablet. I guess McLaren was so focused on shrinking the car they had to tilt the screen sideways. However, it looks good and has some useful functions like an Aux port, Bluetooth audio, USB and voice command among others, all of which we used to our heart’s content. Verdict The top of the mountain has the longest zip line in the world, at least something to look forward to after finishing the uphill drive. The car needed a break after much abuse, although it is built to perform the Rais al Khaima temperature was no friend to us and neither to the 570S Spider, so we thought it best to give it a breather. My friend tried the zip line while I sat on a rock just admiring the attractive supercar. Some children even came to snap photos with the McLaren and I happily obliged. After such an adrenaline-filled drive, I was not up for the zip line, maybe I had too much of it, or it was nausea you feel on hilly roads. That’s the kind of effect this beastly supercar 104 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

has on you. As soon as my friend came back, we began our downhill descent back towards Dubai. It was getting late already and we had a nice lunch planned in an expensive restaurant. So, it would be no surprise that we zoomed down the hill. The carbon-ceramic brakes had our back when we needed them and after putting them to the test It can be said they performed exceptionally well. There are anti-lock brakes, but no hill-assists provided, so it all comes down to your driving skill while going downhill. After driving for an hour back to Dubai we made it to the restaurant in time and all the time the discussion was about the McLaren 570S Spider. It’s a car that brings out the teenager in you and it doesn’t disappoint in any way. True, it doesn’t have any modern driving assists, safety features, or enough space to fit a family, but it has what a car should have and that is a growling engine that never gives up.

THE MG ZS CROSSOVER THUMBS UP OR THUMBS DOWN BY: TAREK HAWCHAR

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 12 107

RE VIE W

[M

G Motors was a British vehicle marque until it was bought by Chinese automobile company SAIC. Since its takeover in 2011, the company has produced some exceptional vehicles and among its fleet one important mention is the MG ZS SUV. We had the chance to experience a blue colored MG ZS SUV in Doha and what we saw and felt was impressive. Overview The MG ZS was given birth to target the compact SUV market and as such, it became a direct competitor with the Nissan Juke as well as the Mazda CX-3. Both of these mentioned vehicles have already made their mark in the world, but the ZS hasn’t really got the chance.

108 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

The SUV has just been released in Qatar as part of the MG brand revival in the country and so it would face tough competition from well-established automobile brands. Exterior Although the major selling point for the MG ZS is its technologically advanced and modern interior, the exterior is quite a deal maker itself. The SUV looks like it’s ready to go on an adventure. The curved edges and the sharp lines on the sides, as well as the front, give it a dominant appearance. At first sight, it looks like the SUV is inspired by its British roots, however, the front looks more like it has been adopted from the house of Mazda, but the huge MG logo on the front of the grille gives it away.

REVIEW

AT FIRST SIGHT, IT LOOKS LIKE THE SUV IS INSPIRED BY ITS BRITISH ROOTS

As for the rear, the resemblance can be traced back to Kia – with its stylish lights - though once again the logo brings us back to reality. MG was hoping to introduce a new design DNA for its 2018 vehicles, but we couldn’t see the effort. There are LED daytime lights, contrasting colors and Although, the new model for the ZS had a change in its structure. The 2018 ZS is based on the USD (Ultimate Stiffness Design) that strengthens the vehicle skeleton by 70% strong steel. As a result, the vehicles got a 5-star (highest) rating from the C-NCAP. So the driver and passengers can feel safe and well-protected riding in the MG ZS. Interior Overall, the cabin has been well-designed with enough classy materials to make it look opulent like the carbon fiber design near the infotainment system and an option to include leather, however, we could notice some areas where the low-cost part of the SUV was evident.

The cabin is riddled with the use of low-quality plastic which is really a let-down. However, that is what a cheap SUV is all about, cost-saving and looking good while doing it. The space inside is commendable. The structure provides enough headroom, legroom and shoulder space to accommodate passengers comfortably. There are even 448 liters of space in the boot to devour all kinds of luggage. However, what’s really exciting is the dash. The value for money can be seen here thanks to the Intelligent Telematics System and a touchenabled 8” inkaLink Vehicle System that even has Apple CarPlay. Moreover, there is Bluetooth compatibility, cruise control, safety features like tire pressure monitor, over speed warning system and parking sensors with a rear parking camera among other things. That’s a pretty fair deal for a low-priced car. The climate control AC, though was a disappointment and we felt that it needs a bit of finetuning to fit into the Doha climate

Engine There is only a single option for the engine and that is a 1.5-litre inline 4 which makes 105 horsepower while being mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine has a healthy rev limit of 5500 rpm, which is more than enough for city driving as well as for some offroading. Driving the vehicle is genuinely entertaining. The SUV has good traction and just the right amount of control on corners, which is helped by its very responsive and light steering. The suspension also does a good job of providing the vehicle with protection from bumps, potholes, and other obstacles. We also tried the three different modes found in the ZS, the Normal, Urban and Dynamic. The Normal mode does a fine job of handling and holding the vehicle in place. The Dynamic mode, on the other hand, is built for extreme conditions like off-roading or even racing, where turns have to be abrupt, solid and responsive.

110 ISSUE 12 / maqinaonline.com

The engine is not very good on the pockets, as it has a very poor fuel economy. MG states that the ZS makes 17.3 km per 100 km. The figure sounds good but if you actually do the math, it’s about 5 km/l, which other 1.5-litre engines found in other vehicles can do better. All of this is supported by a 48 -liter tank, so we wouldn’t advise taking it on a long road with few petrol stations. The three trims include the base 1.5L STD, the mid-range 1.5L COM and the top of the class 1.5L LUX that we drove around Doha. Conclusion The MG ZS is a great crossover SUV alternative for those of you who are tight on the budget. The vehicle has all the necessary technology that an average person in this modern age will need.

TIPS BUYING A USED CAR is like buying a watermelon, it could look pretty and appealing from the outside, yet once you slide that knife across you might end up with a disappointing desert. Here are some tips that would help you score the right car.

1

Do your homework Once you decided what car suits your needs, don’t rush to score the sweetest watermelon. Do your research, ask around, and compare, sometimes even the color of the car affect its value in the market. For example, a white Landcruiser is more valuable than a golden one. So why pay the same amount when you can save some cash.

Too many fish in the sea A common trick a seller would use, is to make you feel like you’re loosing a hell of deal if you didn’t make and instant decision. Some might say “ I have a waiting list of buyers, so if you didn’t make up your mind quickly I might have to sell it to someone else” So if you’re not sure if it is the “one” and unless you are looking at a 1955 MercedesBenz 300SL Gullwing, just walk away.

Negotiating The best time to make an offer is after you have met with the seller and seen the car. This will indicate that you are a serious buyer and will make the seller give their actual expectations of the price. Also make sure you both agree on the price before taking the car to the inspection. Finally always remember that the strongest negotiating position is to be able to walk away and mean it.

Inspection is the last option Once, I was offered a Land cruiser with only 70,000 KM on the odometer, the overall condition of the car made me suspicious. So I started browsing the interweb and I found the exact same car was posted for sale a couple of months back with 170,000 KM on it !

If I had payed for an inspection, they wouldn’t be able to tell me the mileage was a fraud. Therefore before taking every car you like to an inspection shop, try all the free ways out there to find out more about the car like service history, or browsing websites where cars are posted for sale, if a car have been sold and bought many times that might tell something.
