The next step to automated driving. A wealth of assistance systems are on hand in the new BMW 5 Series to offer the driver unbeatable support – not only at critical moments but also in less demanding situations at the wheel, such as traffic jams, slow-moving traffic, and monotonous stretches of motorway. To this end, it is fitted as standard with a stereo camera, which teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the car. New features in the BMW 5 Series alongside the evasion aid and Crossing traffic warning are

14 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

the Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection. The latter keeps an eye on the lane markings and the area around the car, and actively helps the driver to avoid looming collisions by applying corrective steering inputs. The BMW 5 Series also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and lane control assistant. These include adoption of speed restrictions, which drivers can select as part of the Speed Limit Assist option. Drivers

can confirm adoption of a speed restriction and make an adjustment of +/– 15 km/h / 9 mph in the system settings. From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph) the car assists the driver with distance-keeping, accelerating, braking and lane control. This increases comfort significantly – in particular at low speeds and in slow-moving traffic on clogged up motorway sections. The intelligent Auto Start Stop function now adjusts its responses to the route and traffic conditions and therefore offers even greater driving comfort.

he new Lamborghini Aventador S is characterized by new aerodynamic design, redeveloped suspension, increased power and new driving dynamics. The ‘S’ is the suffix of previous enhanced Lamborghini models and defines a new benchmark for the V12 Lamborghini. “This is the next generation Aventador as well as the expression of new technological and performance milestones in super sports car development,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali. “The Aventador S is visionary design, cutting-edge technology and driving dynamics in pure harmony, and elevates the concept of super sports cars to a new level.”

Design and Aerodynamics The design of the new Aventador S clearly indicates the new Aventador generation. The Aventador S features a number of exterior developments, particularly in front and rear, while its profile remains clearly an Aventador. Every modified component is redesigned for a purpose, achieving maximum aerodynamic efficiency while accenting the Aventador’s complex, muscular dynamism. Furthermore, Lamborghini Centro Stile has intelligently integrated certain elements of past icons, such as the lines of rear wheel arches reminiscent of the original Countach.

NEWS A more aggressive nose and longer front splitter redirect airflow for better aerodynamic efficiency, improved engine cooling and increased cooling to the radiators. Two air ducts in the side of the front bumper reduce aerodynamic interference from the front tires and optimize wake flow to the rear radiator. The rear of the Aventador S is dominated by a black diffuser, available on request in carbon fiber, characterized by a number of vertical fins that amplify the airflow effects, reduce drag through pressure recovery and generate downforce. Three single exhaust outlets exit through the rear bumper. The active rear wing is movable in three positions depending on speed and drive select mode, and optimizes the car’s improved overall balance, working with vortex generators created in the front and rear of the chassis’ underside that maximize air flow as well as assist in brake cooling. The Aventador S design results in significantly enhanced aerodynamic performance. Front downforce has been improved by more than 130% over the previous Aventador coupÊ. When the wing is in its optimum position the overall efficiency at high downforce is improved by over 50%, and in low drag by more than 400% compared to the previous model.

NEWS

Four masterpieces evolve driving emotion: Four-wheel drive, new active suspension, new four-wheel steering system and the new EGO driving mode The Aventador S chassis retains the Aventador’s unique and extremely rigid lightweight carbon fiber monocoque with attached aluminum frames resulting in a dry weight of just 1,575 kg. The Aventador S is redeveloped around a ‘total control concept’ to provide a superior drive, ride and performance; every aspect of the car’s suspension and electronic control systems has been advanced, with the goal of particularly enhanced control and driving emotion. Enhanced lateral control comes from new fourwheel steering, adopted for the first time on a series production Lamborghini. The system provides improved agility at low and medium speeds and more stability at high speed. On the front axle it is combined with Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS), tuned for a more natural and responsive feel with a sharper turn-in. It is specially adapted to integrate with the active Lamborghini Rear-wheel Steering (LRS) on the rear axle: two separate actuators react in five milliseconds to driver’s steering movements, allowing a real-time angle and cornering stiffness adjustment. At low speeds, rear wheels wheels face in opposite direction to the steering angle, thereby virtually reducing the wheelbase. With less steering wheel angle required, the Aventador S is more agile with a reduced turning radius, ensuring higher performance in curves and making it easy to maneuver in town and at low speeds. Conversely at higher speeds both front and rear wheels share the same steering angle, thus virtually extending the wheelbase, providing increased stability and optimizing the responsiveness of the car. Vertical control comes from Lamborghini’s updated pushrod and Lamborghini Magneto-rheological Suspension (LMS), with revised kinematics adapted to the new four-wheel steering. New suspension geometry, optimized for Lamborghini Rear-wheel Steering, includes upper and lower arm and wheel carrier to reduce caster and load on the system. A new real-time variable damping system optimizes wheel and body control, and balance and ground stiffness is maximized. New rear springs also enhance the car’s balance.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 25

N EW S Longitudinal control is achieved via an improved ESC strategy with faster and more precise control of traction control and vehicle dynamics, depending on the driving mode selected. Extensively tested on surfaces such as snow and ice, the Aventador S has improved adhesion detection to maximize grip in all conditions and enhance its handling capabilities. The Aventador S permanent four-wheel drive has been calibrated for the stabilizing effect of the new Lamborghini Rearwheel Steering, allowing more torque to the rear axle: when powering off the throttle, less torque is shifted to the front axle to allow oversteer behavior and a sporty, but safe drive. Lamborghini engineers have integrated the smart Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva (LDVA) control unit to manage these systems in the car. LDVA is the new brain of the

26 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

car, which receives real time and precise information on body motion via input from all sensors of the car. It instantly defines the best set-up of all active systems in order to guarantee the best vehicle dynamics in each and every condition.

EGO is the new driving mode option. This provides several additional and individual set-up profiles, customizable by the driver, selecting his preferred criteria for traction, steering and suspension within the STRADA, SPORT and CORSA settings.

EGO concept–customizable driving modes

All driving modes have been recalibrated in the Aventador S, improving ESC integration with all-wheel drive and the interface between engine torque management system and traction control reaction. The continuous torque split to front and rear axles in each driving mode is recalibrated for the Lamborghini Rear-wheel Steering and the differentiation between the driving modes is enhanced.

The Aventador S allows the driver to select between four different driving modes: STRADA, SPORT, CORSA and the new EGO mode, which influence the behavior of traction (engine, gearbox, 4WD), steering (LRS, LDS, Servotronic) and suspension (LMS). STRADA stands for maximum comfort and daily use. SPORT provides a sporty, rear-wheel drive feel and CORSA is suitable for maximum track performance.

NEWS In STRADA, the progressive damping is smoothed for better comfort and stability on rough roads. Torque is split 40/60 to the front and rear as standard: safe and stable with maximum adhesion, the car is easily driven and controlled. In SPORT mode, the stabilizing effect of the Lamborghini Rear-wheel Steering allows up to 90% torque to the rear wheels for maximum sportiness and driving fun on curving roads. Driving precision and driver feedback is improved, while maintaining safety and without compromising on comfort. When powering off the accelerator, less torque is shifted to the front axle to enhance the car’s agility, with oversteer and drifting easy using light throttle and steering wheel control.

In CORSA, drivers experience less intrusive dynamic and traction control intervention while maintaining driving precision and traction. High levels of damping force maximize driver feeling and feedback from driver inputs including steering, braking and throttle. Counter-phase steering is enhanced in high-performance situations and torque is balanced to both axles, with a maximum 20/80 split to front and rear for more neutral behavior and to maximize track-oriented performance.

The engine and exhaust The Lamborghini Aventador’s naturally aspirated twelve cylinder, 6.5 liter engine outputs an additional 40 hp over its

predecessor, to a maximum 740 hp, with a 690 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. To achieve the power increase, both VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and VIS (Variable Intake System) have been optimized in order to obtain an enriched torque curve. Additionally, the maximum engine revs have been increased from 8,350 to 8,500 rpm. A dry weight of just 1,575 kg provides a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.13 kg/hp. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is reached in 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 350 km/h. Transmission is provided by Lamborghini’s lightweight Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) 7-speed shifting system, providing robotized gear shifts in up to 50 milliseconds.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 27

N EW S

The Aventador S adopts a new exhaust system developed as the result of a significant R&D project. More than 20% lighter than its predecessor and the product of testing multiple configurations, the results are an enhanced Lamborghini sound and resonance from the already inimitable V12 aspirated engine, with the three single pipe outlets at the rear of the Aventador S a visual reminder of the new exhaust system. As in its predecessor, the Aventador S is equipped with a stop-and-start system and cylinder deactivation for optimized engine efficiency. When full engine capacity is not required, six of the twelve cylinders are temporarily deactivated by switching off one cylinder bank. When the driver accelerates, the system switches back instantaneously to twelve-cylinder mode, with the changeover virtually impossible to detect by the driver.

Tires and braking system The Aventador S sits on a new, specially developed set of Pirelli P Zero tires. Designed to optimize steering, traction, lane changes and braking efficiency, the tires are specifically designed to respond to the dynamic behavior induced by the Lamborghini Rear-wheel Steering, ensuring handling consistency and driver feedback. With improved force generation from both front and rear tires, the Pirelli P Zero tires provide a higher lateral acceleration and reduce understeer characteristics. Carbon ceramic brakes are standard equipment for the Aventador S. The ventilated and perforated carbon ceramic discs (Ø 400 x 38 mm – Ø 380 x 38 mm) enhance braking performance from 100 km/h to standstill in 31 m.

Aventador S – a driver’s environment The cockpit of the Aventador S brings new functionality and refinement. A new TFT digital dashboard can be customized according to the driver’s preferences, with different kombi screens for STRADA, SPORT and CORSA in conjunction with the EGO mode. Selected from the driving modes options on the control panel, the EGO button reveals further options on pop-up digital screens, allowing the driver to choose his preferred settings. AppleCarPlay comes as a standard specification, allowing the cockpit’s occupants to manage voice activated communications and entertainment from personal Apple devices. The Lamborghini telemetry system is an optional specification: recording lap times and track performance as well as trip data, the telemetry system is especially appealing to the owner who wants to take his car on track. The interior specification of the Aventador S is virtually limitless through Lamborghini’s Ad Personam customization program.

FROM JAPAN TO QATAR PART II

TOYOTA’S IMPORTANT SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS BY: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

R

egular readers will remember that in our last article, we featured the Toyota Prius on the cover of the magazine. Before that happened, we had a chance to visit Japan and the Toyota HQ specifically. We test drove the Prius and the Mirai on the incredible Fuji Speedway, and more importantly, we had a tour of the Prius plant, a giant complex with unbelievable machinery inside. Toyota proved to be one of the best hosts we’ve ever had, giving us a full tour of their facilities as well as seminars explaining all of the effort they put into their vehicles.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 37

N EW S

Toyota has always been a commissioner of safety and environmentalism, but starting from 2011 and their 3-pillar approach to addressing the world’s pollution issues, they’ve really taken the game to a whole different level. The 3-pillar approach aims at achieving three things: contribute to a low-carbon society, contribute to a recycling-based society, and last but not least, ensure environmental protection. They went about addressing those issues in a number of ways. Firstly, by developing and designing low-carbon emitting, environmentally friendly vehicles. They’ve been looking at alternatives to fossil fuels such as biofuel, electricity and hydrogen for the last quarter of a century, and lots of EVs, FCVs and PHVs from Toyota have changed how the world looked at alternative fuel sources. The result, effectively, is the modernday Prius and Mirai, two of the most environmentally conscious vehicles on the planet. Since the launch of the first Toyota Prius back in 1997, when it was basically the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, a staggering 9 million units have been sold worldwide. In that time, the Prius is estimated to have lowered CO2 emissions by 67 million tons, or roughly equivalent to the same amount of weight as 24 million Land Cruisers. It conserved 15 million kilometers of gasoline compared to a normal, non-hybrid vehicle, an equivalent to the amount needed to make 3,400 roundtrips from the Earth to the sun and back. Development of the first-gen Prius actually started in 1993. The concept of the car was radical from the start: Toyota wanted to create the modern car, suitable to the 21st century and change the entire vehicle development method. The project was codenamed

38 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

“G12”. They first set out with the idea of creating a vehicle with 1.5 times better fuel economy than that of standard vehicles, but the figure was deemed too low to put the car in mass-production. Their ideal target of 2 times better fuel economy represented a much better starting point. Toyota’s hybrid powertrain aimed at combining the best of both worlds: achieve the instant power delivery and improved fuel economy of a full-on electric car, but retain the traditional benefits a gasoline powered vehicle has to offer. When done effectively, a hybrid vehicle offers loads more than what either gasoline or electric cars can do individually. With excellent driving characteristics and eco-friendly features, it appeals to all generations and every type of driver. Today, Toyota offers hybrid powertrains for most of its lineup, to meet diverse customer needs. From the smallest Aqua and Yaris, to the largest GS, LS, RX, and even Dyna and Toyoace, the work trucks. There are roughly 4.4 million HVs in Japan alone, with a further 3 million in the U.S. and 1.1 million in Europe. The incentives for purchasing an HV, up to this point, have been extremely appealing to a lot of people. The way in which Toyota’s Hybrid System works is fascinating. When first setting off, an electric motor drives the wheels using nothing but electricity from the battery. The same is true under light-load driving, when not a lot is demanded in terms of power and torque. The engine’s power is split into two different portions. The first one is used to power the driven wheels directly, when it needs to kick in to take over from the electric motor. The other part is there to assist the generator/motor, which in turn assists the engine. Power efficiency has been achieved by smart power split between the different portions. The excess electricity generated under light-driving goes back to charging the battery. To further charge up the battery, Toyota fitted regeneration brakes which directly charge the battery. When the amount of charged electricity has reduced, the engine drives a generator which recharges the batteries.

It’s not just about the cars however. Toyota is aware that as a large car manufacturer, it has the civil duty to take care of the Earth and set an example for others to follow. As of March 2015, around 42,000 HV batteries have been collected and recycled, with Toyota further promoting the recycling of HV batteries. Not only that, but they’ve been planting trees at production plants and in the Forest of Toyota, promoting a more conscious, sustainable society which can work in conjunction with nature. The long-term plan for Toyota is quite simple: they want to achieve a standard of zero environmental impact in the next decade or so. To do this, they’ve outlined six different challenges which all aim to bring the CO2 levels down to 0, whether it’s actual car emissions or car production and manufacturing processes.

If there’s one thing Toyota’s known for, other than their hybrids, is their excellent safety rating. Toyota is the most safety-oriented car manufacturer, regularly going all-out on research and development to ensure their cars are as safe as they can possibly be. They use a three-part initiative to achieve this: the people, the cars and traffic environment.

40 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

When it comes to integrated safety features, they’re divided into a couple of key sectors. The first one is Parking. The features here are somewhat luxuries rather than necessities. None the less, they can stop you from bumping into other objects or even people, which makes them more than worthwhile. A back-guide monitor, Intelligent Parking Assist and Intelligent clearance sonar all fall under this category.

NEWS

Next on the list is Active safety, an array of systems which are there to prevent an accident from happening. Radar Cruise control, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Alert and Adaptive High Beam system all fall in this category. There’s also night view and navigation collaborative control. Although these may be considered somewhat luxury (extra) systems which do not come standard by other manufacturers, their true value comes

only once you have to rely on them in a dangerous situation. They can literally be a life saver, preventing an accident from happening in the first place. The usual array of Dynamic control systems such as VSC, TC and ABS are standard in every car by now. Pre-Collision Safety systems offer basic functions such as alerts and brake-assist, to inform you of the situation that’s unfolding. It’s the Passive Safety System’s job to protect you in the event that an accident does happen. They’re called passive because they activate only after an accident occurs, where as the active ones remain turned on all the time, monitoring and tracking vital information data and reacting based on it. In a collision, the hood pops up thanks to a new feature which enables it to do so, the seatbelts tensions up, airbags deploy and the collision absorbing body soaks up most of the impact. A Help Net is there to offer rescue services which react quickly and can save your life. Toyota has developed an incredibly accurate computer model representing the human body dubbed “THUMS”. They use a crash test dummy in vehicle crash tests in addition to the model. The aim is quite simple. THUMS is used to research real-world safety information and improve it. THUMS was developed using high-resolution CT scans of a living human subject, so it features the same fragile organs as we do. It also experiences the same G-forces we do, so Toyota can accurately portray what happens to the human body in a given situation using THUMS. Each individual body part can be separately customized and integrated, making THUMS extremely versatile. The THUMS program is divided into subcategories, such as THUMS AM50 if it’s a midsize male, THUMS AF05 if it’s a small female, and so on. It is then used to understand the various injuries a human would suffer in a given situation and estimate the effectiveness of a certain safety technology. It is a very safe and reliable way of understanding how the human body behaves, without actually having to put a human life in danger. It’s currently used throughout the world, although Europe is the biggest customer. The single biggest industry where it’s used however is NASCAR. Yes, the very NASCAR. The effects THUMS has had can be immediately seen. Just look up how many injuries happen in NASCAR, versus the amount of crashes a single race can experience. NASCAR drivers are at a risk of rib fractures at high-speed lateral impacts with the wall, so to prevent that happening, THUMS crash simulations lead to the development of a chest support device for lowering the rib fracture risk. It’s now a requirement in all NASCAR vehicles. From the research and development Toyota puts into their hybrid vehicles, to the great lengths they go to ensure their vehicles are the safest on the planet, it’s clear they are a company which cares for the customer, a company which cares for the people. They are setting an example for other manufacturers, they’re leading by example. For that, we salute you Toyota.

The spectacular ensemble featured top names from yesteryear such as: Ferrari Super America, Testarossa, 288 GTO, 612, F40, F50, Enzo and a replica of the F1 – demonstrating the brand’s motoring prowess since 1940. A highlight of the tour was the LaFerrari sculpture – an exclusive bronze life-size replica of the limited edition LaFerrari hybrid sports car. The piece was crafted by renowned Iraqi artist Ahmed Al-Bahrani, and pays homage to the iconic LaFerrari car with its elegance, sophistication and superior quality that have become its trademark in the automotive industry. While Letbelah was hailed as a sanctuary for classic car lovers, it also presented a true reflection of Ferrari’s unparalleled standards of luxury and craftsmanship – meticulously preserved by Omar Alfardan. Delving into the aspect of vehicle maintenance, Ferrari Qatar’s aftersales team proceeded to brief guests on how to keep their Ferraris in mint condition for a considerable period of time.

LO C A L N E W S Charly Dagher, General Manager of Ferrari Qatar, Alfardan Sports Motors, said: “We are extremely grateful to Omar Alfardan for providing us this wonderful opportunity to view his impressive collection; and we commend his efforts in preserving such an extensive scale of vintage cars. MCLAREN DOHA

HOSTED THEIR BEST TRACK DAY TO DATE IN QATAR BY: Tarek Hawchar

60 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

LO C A L N E W S

R

ecently, we had the opportunity to attend a McLaren Doha track day, and we’re glad to say we weren’t disappointed one bit. It was the complete opposite in fact, as it proved to be the best track day event we have ever attended. Invited customers and media people got a once in a lifetime opportunity to drive McLaren’s very own 570GT and 570S complete with instructors and hot laps. We’ll get back to our experience in a second, let’s just introduce the amazing cars McLaren provided for us.

First, we have the 570S. Advertised as McLaren’s “baby sportscar”, or entry-level, don’t let the moniker fool you. This is a full-on supercar killer. It murders nearly every other supercar on track, thanks to its monstrous 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 developing 562 hp, the incredibly agile chassis and of course, the trick aero. Oh, it also has 600 Nmft of torque. The lightweight chassis coupled with the insane power means the 570S is able to reach 100 Km/h in just 2.9 seconds. Then there’s the 570GT. Essentially a “road” version of the 570S, it’s just as capable on the track, with some added comfort and practicality for the road.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 61

LO C AL N EW S

The day started off uneventful. Well, as uneventful as a bunch of enthusiasts waiting to drive supercars can be. After a quick brief on safety protocols and some track information, it was time to actually hit the track. We all expected this to be a standard track day, where we get to drive the cars ourselves at a decent pace, but nowhere near the limit. As it turns out, McLaren had other plans. We received one on one private sessions with the instructors who taught us how to drive on a track properly. This was, in the full meaning of the words, a real track day. Most of us never knew a car could brake or corner so hard, as you never really drive them more than 7/10 on the road. This was a real eye-opening experience. Weirdly, it makes you a better driver overall, not just on the track. You gain a sense of where the grip is, how the car reacts when it starts to slide and how much pressure you can apply when braking before it starts to lock up or the ABS kicks in.

62 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

LO C A L N E W S

This was, without a doubt, the most amazing track day we’ve attended so far. Getting an invitation from McLaren Doha to drive a supercar is one thing, but pushing it to its limit with a professional next to you is something dreams are made out of. When you’re in the zone, you can actually imagine what it’s like to be racing with 20 other cars who are going just as insanely fast as you, within a few meters of each other. Would we do it again? In a heartbeat.

FERRARI GTC4LUSSO THE BRILLIANT EVERYDAY SUPERCAR By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

T

hink about a supercar, any supercar. You’re probably thinking of a two-door coupe with the engine in the front, or maybe the middle, and almost no boot space. What if we told you there’s a “practical” supercar which can fit four, has room for your luggage and features a big, shouty V12 at the front? No, it’s not the Ferrari FF, but the Ferrari GTC4Lusso, the FF’s spirited successor.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 81

C OV ER STO RY

We’ve recently had the chance to test the car out in Qatar, and we were pleasantly surprised with the four-seater Ferrari. Think of it this way: the GTC4Lusso is to the FF what the new 488 GTB is to the old 458 Italia, with one major difference, which we’ll get to later on. Let’s start with the looks first, because it looks utterly gorgeous. It’s the same concept as the FF, with some minor improvements. The design boasts Ferrari’s new visual design language, which means it looks angry and sinister from all angles, especially the front. It’s nearly as large as an S-Class, but because it’s so well proportioned, you can’t really tell. The new strakes just behind the front wheels help generate the illusion that it’s actually shorter, while the rear haunches make it more curvaceous. The rear fascia is extremely cool, with a fullblown underbody diffuser and an integrated top spoiler. The rear threequarter view is simply amazing. The hatchback hump at the back gives it an almost bullet-like shape, and it elongates the front of the car. You have to see it in person to truly appreciate how gorgeous it is, because pictures don’t do it justice.

The design boasts Ferrari’s new visual design language, which means it looks angry and sinister from all angles, especially the front.

Inside, it’s been totally updated. The infotainment system is heaps better, the graphics have been improved and it’s a joy to use. You quickly learn how to use it because it’s genuinely intuitive. Rear passengers get 16mm more legroom, which should address the small issue the FF had. Even taller passengers can ride in the rear seats now, although they may not want to remain there for long periods of time. The steering is brand-new, and it’s equipped with bigger pads for the headlight and wiper controls. The blinkers can be activated from behind the wheel or via your thumbs from the front. It’s more functional, but it looks sillier. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 83

C OV ER STO RY

The dash has been redesigned with a large ten-inch central screen on the middle and a different display for the passenger (like the one in the F12 Berlinetta). The leather is of the highest-quality variety, and that, along with the peerless metal really finish off the entire look. The rear seats fold 50:50 split and there’s 800 liters of available boot space. You don’t normally are about this sort of stuff in a Ferrari, but because it’s the GTC4Lusso, a four-seater one, it’s allowed. And then, we get to the good stuff. Remember how we said this is different to the 458 and 488 in one major way? Well, it’s the engine. See, most people expected the new four-seater flagship Ferrari to feature a turbocharged V8, because, well, even performance manufacturers have been downsizing. After all, the near as makes no difference 700 horsepower turbocharged V8 in the 488 would have made a great unit for the new GTC4Lusso. Well, thankfully, Ferrari disagreed, so the new car has the same V12 as the previous FF. Mind you, the engine has been improved with redesigned pistons and a higher compression ratio, so it now offers 29 more horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque more than the FF. The dual-clutch transaxle is the same, housing an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

84 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

C OV E R STO RY

On the straights, it’s a true monster. The V12 is happy to scream throughout the entire rev range, all the way to the 8,250 rpm limit. Although the GTC4Lusso is a 2 ton machine, it has no trouble keeping up with the rest of the supercars on the market. The large V12 really is the car’s party piece. It makes everything else with half the cylinders feel like a toy, even if it isn’t technically a lot faster than them. There really is no replacement for displacement, or noise as it would turn out in this case. At this point, you may be wondering how well it drives in the corners. To test that out, we introduced it to some bends to see how well it copes. The short answer is amazingly. The car has a 48:52 weight distribution and despite the fact that it weighs two tons, it doesn’t understeer or oversteer. Pushed past its absolute limit it will exhibit the most minute understeer sensation, but that’s all really. On the road, you can’t get anywhere near its limits. The four wheel drive system, although not the pinnacle of its type of technology, does wonders for the Ferrari. It’s predictable and communicative, telling you what it’s doing all of the time. Enter a corner too fast, and it will sort the situation out for you. Because it’s got tons of grip, you don’t even have to wait for the corner exit to nail the throttle. Mash it way before you thought was possible, and the GTC4Lusso just grips and goes.

Granted, you can feel some of the weight in the slower corners and the fast changes of direction, but it’s nowhere near as its mass would suggest. The four-wheel drive system masks it beautifully, but it wants to be on long, open sweepers where it can use the power of the big V12. The GTC4Lusso may not be to everyone’s liking, but to certain individuals, it’s the best Ferrari ever made. We can see why. It’s got 95% of the performance the F12 offers, has seating for four, a big boot, four-wheel drive which makes it capable in all weather, and unique looks which no other Ferrari boasts. We think the GTC4Lussio may even be a future classic, especially now since they changed the name FF into something more evocative.

SWEDISH SELFIE, THE S90 CAN HANDLE ALMOST ALL THE DRIVING, BUT DON’T REACH FOR YOUR PHONE JUST YET

O

ne thing about the Volvo S90, is that it’s easy to lose sight of this lovely saloon in light of the success of the attention grabbing XC90. That is, until you spend some time with the car. At its core the S90 is another logical extension of the design language that underpins the SUV, and one destined to challenge the usual suspects in the hotly contested segment. The S90 manages to accomplish an aesthetic that stands out, if only for its smoothness, amid a jumble of sameness, managing to be both new and timeless, without putting you to sleep. Based on Volvo’s blown 2.0-liter, which the powerplant, which it shares with the XC90 is blown to rising levels of horsepower. The car also shares its platform with the SUV, and offers a host of cutting edge tech like Pilot Assist. And, because it’s a Volvo, you can expect class-leading safety here as well. About that, back in 1958 Nils Bohlin, who previously designed ejector seats for Saab fighter jets, was hired by Volvo as their chief safety engineer, a then new position created after a relative of CEO Gunnar Engelau’s perished in a car accident. The next year, Bohlin revolutionized automotive safety by introducing the three-point harness safety belt, helping establish what became one of the brand’s key differentiators.

ROA D T R I P

In keeping with their legacy of safety conscious engineering, Volvo has spent more than half a decade engineering these safer, more streamlined seats, which are both friendlier to leg room (with less mass in the seat back, there’s more legroom for the person behind you) and extremely pleasant to sit in. There’s no bad seat in the house here, and the thoughtful ‘theatre’ positioning helps afford each passenger an improved view. The S90 is a sign if forward momentum for Volvo Cars, a company best known for its SUVs and estates, that now seems intent on making a dent in the premium sedan segment with its distinctive executive class sedan. With plenty of new technologies ranging from cutting edge safety to cloud-based apps and services, the S90 is further proof of the Swedish brand’s continuing transformation. “With the launch of the XC90 we made a clear statement of intent. We are now clearly and firmly in the game. With $11 USD billion of investment over the past five years we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be – we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group.

The new Volvo S90 comes equipped with an advanced semiautonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist. The system gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 130 km/h and no longer needs to follow another car. Pilot Assist is another step towards full autonomous drive – a key innovation area for Volvo.

The S90 also introduces a world first function to City Safety - large animal detection - a system capable of detecting large animals such as elk, horses or moose, night or day. The technology offers an intuitive warning and brake support to help avoid a collision. The S90 has also benefitted from Volvo Cars’ recent investment in a highly advanced chassis simulator.

The S90 will also come with a clean and powerful T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain and one of the most luxuriously appointed interiors and connected infotainment systems in the large sedan segment.

“The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

“Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior. On the inside we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group.

The big S90 handles well, albeit not as unflappably well as something like the Jag XF. But then, it’s larger and less sporty, so that’s as it should be. Nonetheless, the new chassis is quite capable, body roll is minimal and there’s no tendency towards outsized understeer. Think of it as a sort of execu-sled wafter with a Swedish Chef accent.

This big-boned Swede excels at comfort, both in the driveway and on the road. We recommend the optional air suspension for a superbly smooth ride atop the 20-inch wheels that accompany the top trim level. Step up to the 21’s and things get a little less placid, but either would suffice for a run up to Jebel Hafeet, or the getaway spot of your choosing. Buy an S90 and you’ll be extremely comfortable and well looked after inside. You will also be quite safe, and that’s no small thing on our roads. Volvo is projecting zero fatalities in their cars by 2020 and so far, the data they’ve gathered since 2010 has them right on track. The legacy of Nils Bohlin is alive and well at the company, and Volvo studies real-world accidents in depth to augment the safety testing it does at its own facility. The car has a solid cage and a wide range of active avoidance systems, some unique and, one day, you may just be able to leave all the driving to Volvo. Given their track record, that could be a very good thing.

he MGX-21 is the most unconventional, rich and technological of the 1400 cc grand cruisers built at Mandello del Lario. Moto Guzzi is one of the greatest brands in the motorcycling world and in almost a century of history has produced motorcycles that are often ahead of their time, forging new ways forward subsequently adopted by everyone. The MGX-21 is the latest example of Moto Guzzi’s originality and courage, a traditional part of its heritage. The internal trembling and vibrations felt even before you climb on board, multiply when the 90° V-twin engine starts up: from the banks of the Lario to the borders of the world, your journey moves to the rhythm of the strokes of the huge pistons of the Moto Guzzi big block.

110 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

The cruiser stands out for its design, build quality and attention to detail MGX-21 has become a large touring bike, with a pair of rigid side panniers that in no way distort that purity of design the prototype boasted, integrating harmoniously in the style of the back end. The 58-litre carrying capacity and the presence of convenient, removable internal bags guarantee space and practicality for world travellers. The external pannier covers are in carbon fibre: the deep reflections that come from the carbon fibre are combined with “total black” graphics that make the MGX-21 the darkest and most attractive bike from Mandello. Particular attention was given to the study and definition of the “batwing” design, the large top fairing that makes an essential contribution to the bike’s futuristic look. The shapes at the back also stem from the same studies and they are enhanced by carbon fibre profiles and the dual series of built-in LED lights.

The MGX-21 is the most unconventional, rich and technological of the 1400 cc grand cruisers built at Mandello del Lario

To celebrate such a personal, powerful and brave style, Moto Guzzi gave the MGX-21 the evocative soubriquet of Flying Fortress. The Flying Fortress also stands out for meticulous and obsessive attention to detail: the spectacular headlight cluster uses LED DRL lighting technology, whereas the electrical controls on the handlebar are finished with metal shells. The new Moto Guzzi shows off a large 21” alloy front wheel, now protected by lenticular carbon fibre covers with small openings where the spokes intersect with the channel. This stylistic choice also brings the technical advantage of increased stability and ease of handling due to the passage of air from one side of the hub to the other while the bike is in motion. The refined electronic engine management includes the “full Ride-by-Wire” electronic accelerator that manages 3 different

engine maps, easily selected from the handlebar controls to adapt power and torque distribution in any situation: • VELOCE • TURISMO • PIOGGIA Moto Guzzi MGX-21 is also fitted with two-channel ABS and an advanced (and patented) traction control system that can be adjusted to three different settings (that can also be disabled). The new cruise control from Moto Guzzi with multiple features makes its début on the MGX-21: this system allows the rider to maintain the selected speed without touching the throttle, as well as increasing or decreasing cruising speed using a toggle button on the left-hand handlebar control.

The top fairing hides a highly refined instrument cluster with a monochromatic, dot matrix display with a wealth of information, also including the fuel level and engaged gear indicator, clock, average and instantaneous fuel consumption and air temperature indicator. The MGX-21 dashboard also provides a complete entertainment system that includes the stereo system, equipped with an AM/FM radio with a 25W per channel amplifier connected to a pair of loudspeakers and it manages the intercom system. Also contributing to achieving this goal is the brand new (and patented) manoeuvring assistance system that reduces the tendency (connected to the size of the front wheel) of the steering to “close” in low speed and high steering angle manoeuvres, counterbalancing the weight of the steering, thanks to a system of regressive springs and particular kinematics. All this verve is controlled by a benchmark braking system for the category worthy of a sports motorcycle, comprising a trio of large diameter discs and four-piston front callipers and radial connection that is painted red to highlight the MGX21’s exhibitionist personality.

Francesco Marchionna Aftersales Regional Manager of Ferrari for the Middle East and India

R

ecently, Maqina had a chance to talk to Francesco Marchionna, the Aftersales regional manager of Ferrari for the Middle East and India. We asked him a few questions and he was more than happy to answer them all. Following now, is that very interview. M: Thank you for speaking with us Mr. Marchionna. Let’s begin with an introduction. Tell us a bit about you and what you do. F: It’s my pleasure. As mentioned, I am the Aftersales regional manager of Ferrari for the Middle East and India. My main job is to keep customers happy and take care of the relations after the purchase has been made. Here at Ferrari, we believe we’re one big family, not just a company selling products to their customers. Everyone is a part of the greater family. M: What makes Ferrari and Alfardan Sports Motors in particular, special? F: Well, it’s the people which make the brand so special. Everyone in the workshop and the dealership is like a best friend both to one another, and to the customer. When you, as a customer, can trust and relate to the employees, you won’t just come in when your car needs a service, but can visit anytime and have a chat with likeminded people who share your passion and interests. M: So by improving the interactions with the customers, you’re making the overall experience of owning a Ferrari better? F: Exactly. Owning a Ferrari vehicle is only part of the story. Often customers come when they want to have a chat, whether it be about Ferrari in Maranello, our dealership, or just Ferrari cars in general. The Ferrari doesn’t need to have a technical issue for the customer to visit us. When there is a technical issue however, we make everything to speed up the process and take care of our customers. It isn’t always about a technical issue either. Sometimes, the customer is doing some upgrades, or wants his Ferrari to be a bit more uniquely customized.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 6 115

I N TERV I EW

M: So Alfardan isn’t just your typical dealer then? F: Absolutely not. We take care of maintenance, upgrades, and accessories. In the past seven years or so we’ve gotten really good with accessories such as carbon fibre, wraps, etc., custom tailoring them to the customer.

M: How do you gain one’s confidence? F: Well for starters, we’re offering a seven years maintenance plan which comes with the car, free of charge. We do this to strengthen our relationship with the customers, and gain their trust. Mind you, this is in addition to the three year standard warranty, which can also be extended up to an incredible fifteen years. This makes Ferrari the only brand which has a warranty that can stretch to 15 years.

M: Isn’t it risky offering that many years of a warranty? F: I think it’s just a testament to how much we believe in our product. Naturally, for the warranty to be valid you have to take it in the workshop at least once a year or so, just for inspection and regular service such as oil and filters, but other than that, there’s not much else. If we take care of the maintenance, we’re absolutely positive the car won’t have major issues. Just look at some of the older Ferraris still being driven hard to this very day.

116 ISSUE 6 / maqinaonline.com

M: Exactly. How old does a Ferrari need to be to be considered a classic? F: Ferraris older than 20 years can be eligible to be considered a classic. The certification for a classic car is obtained through some tests but most importantly, documentation. If we can account for the car’s maintenance over the last 20 years and know its value, we can issue the certificate. This is very important for collectors.

M: What’s the next step, the next level above the standard Ferrari ownership? F: Well, in Italy we call passionate Ferrari owners Ferraristi. Most of them attend Ferrari track days in one way or another, and own a Ferrari racing car. The new 488 Challenge which was recently launched offers a whole new world of Ferrari ownership. The 458 was already great, but the 488 is on another level. And with so many tracks and events here in the Middle East, it’s great that we’re able to offer that kind of service to the customers, strengthening our relationship even further.

M: What do you like the most about Ferrari? F: Well you know i’ve been working with Ferrari for over 20 years now, and every time i attend an Aftersales event like today i feel like i’m a part of a family, not just a Ferrari worker, customer or something else. I truly believe Ferrari is the best brand out there, and I’m sure customers can attend to that statement as well.

I N T E RV I E W

M: Some people have been taking their Ferraris to thirdparty services. Now while this may not always void warranty, we know that even something as seemingly simple as an oil change can cause issues, as the wrong oil can be used, causing problems. What’s your take on the matter?

FOR STARTERS, WE’RE “OFFERING A SEVEN YEARS MAINTENANCE PLAN WHICH COMES WITH THE CAR, FREE OF CHARGE

F: Well for starters, the official workshop, Alfardan, has experience workers who specialize in Ferrari maintenance. Each one of them attends three to four trainings per year for all the Ferrari components: engine, chassis, electrics and so on. They know each and every detail of the Ferraris and have all of the necessary tools for the cars. We also use genuine parts on all of them. We have the luxury of communicating with Maranello, so we can solve issues straight from the main factory in real time. It’s not just about the money like some people think, because there’s really no difference today between us and a third-party dealer. We truly care about the customer and their car, which is why we go to great lengths in ensuring everything is done as it should be.

M: Wow, that was incredible. Thank you very much for the wonderful insight. F: You’re welcome. I hope we get more satisfied Ferrari customers and our family grows like any family should.

DRIVING SAFETY

W

e all tend to focus on our personal attention while driving which is for sure fundamental. However, some of us tend to neglect or have less knowledge on someof the essential technical aspects of the vehicles thatwe drive. Therefore, we have done a research to highlight the most aspects that we personally must look at. I would like to start with tires tips. We do know that each car should have tires in good condition but let us go thru the details to have understanding about the importance of age, grooves depth, high impact signs and adjusted tire pressure. Age of exposed tires: even if the tire has good tread, we require having a look on the tire to inspect if there are signs of cracks. Tire is made of rubber compound which degrades particularly when it is exposed to environmental conditions. The more it is exposed to heat, the faster it gets dry. The dry effect would affect the braking distance negatively. Therefore, while having emergency brake, the breaking distance increases which is too dangerous and it can result to have an accident. Even if the spare tire has been always on the trunk and has never been used on the road or even exposed to sun, the spare tire must be replacedwithin 10 years from the stamped manufacture date on the side wall of the tire.

118 ISSUE 65 / maqinaonline.com

DA SH BOA R D In the Middle East and specifically the Gulf region, if the vehicle is driven substantially during summer time, it is enough for the tire to have cracks starting from 2 years and must be replaced. It is always recommended to have the tires checked by a professional technician not only to check the age of the tires, but the uneven surface. Concerning the tread depth, if we don’t have a tire tread gauge, we can simply look at the tread wear bars that are located on the center of the surface and they are always lower than the tread. Once all of the tread are equal to those bars, it is imperative to change the tires.

TIRE PRESSURE: Tire pressure with the time gets reduced due to several factors. However, it is our responsibility to make sure that our tire is not only under inflated but not over inflated as it is related to safety and to the life span of the tire. Over inflated tire, would mean smaller contact patch which can result to less traction and lower braking distance. Moreover, it doesn’t damage the tire from the inner side. Underinflated tire, will have uneven contact with the road which will affect stability of the car. Moreover, it damages the tires, increases fuel consumption and higher CO emission due to the increased rolling resistance. Therefore, correct tire pressure puts us safe, reduces the environmental damage and we can save money. We require to always look at the owner manual of each vehicle we drive to have the correct measure according to usual load the car has.

MUST HAVE IN THE CAR: First aid kit

Battery Jumper cables

(Band-Aids, antiseptic wipes, antiseptic cream or ointment, aspirin, adhesive tape, gauze pads, CPR mask, eyewash cup, absorbent pads for bleeding, scissors, tweezers, sprain bandage, etc..)

Reflective warning triangle

Cellphones charger (will ensure that your phone battery won’t be out of power during emergency)

Vehicle’s fire extinguisher (According to each country low, vehicles’ fire extinguisher has to be installed in every vehicles). However it should be yearly inspected and to be serviced while required.

( to warn the incoming traffic)

o coincide with the last Formula One Grand Prix of the season, Marc Biver, TAG Heuer Global Sports Director, and Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, were joined by a number of guests and media today on the Rooftop of the Yas Viceroy Hotel on Yas Island to jointly announce that Red Bull Racing will continue to run with TAG Heuer branded engines for two more years, through the 2018 season. They were joined by Daniel Ricciardo and, together, the three men pressed a button to start a clock counting down to the next Grand Prix, which will take place in Australia on 26 March 2017. This fantastic gesture symbolises the partnership between these two brands for the coming seasons.

Marc Biver, TAG Heuer Global Sports Director stated: “Formula 1 is part of TAG Heuer’s DNA. Red Bull Racing is a young, dynamic and driven team, perfectly in tune with our marketing strategy. This extension will give us even greater visibility, with a real focus on the future. We have a lot of different projects ahead of us in 2017, projects which are both creative and exciting. Our motto #DontCrackUnderPressure is our guiding principle in all our actions, with the support of the Red Bull Racing team and its highly contagious enthusiasm.” Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing added: “I am very pleased to be extending our engine partnership with TAG Heuer today. TAG Heuer and Red Bull Racing are two brands which both have a passion for racing and a drive to do things differently, and this forms the basis of our partnership. The TAG Heuer motto of ‘Don’t Crack Under Pressure’ is something that we at Red Bull Racing live by day-to-day, so we look forward to helping TAG Heuer tell that story in the seasons ahead.” Already the Official Timekeeper, Official Watch and Team Performance Partner of the Red Bull Racing team, following an agreement signed in December

2015, it was the team’s atypical approach to sport, performance and entertainment which appealed to TAG Heuer and which continues to be perfectly in line with the avant-garde Swiss watch brand’s marketing strategy. Beyond the visibility generated simply by featuring in the team designation which appears throughout all race broadcasts, TAG Heuer can also be seen on the drivers’ helmets, their gloves, race suits, as well as on the team uniform and, of course, on the cars themselves; on the engine cover and chassis top. Naturally, the brand will also be supporting the team on their wrists — either with connected watches, with Formula 1 or with Carrera Heuer 01 models exclusive to the team. TAG Heuer is also the founding partner and Official Timekeeper of the FIA Formula E Championship, Official Timekeeper of the legendary Carrera Panamericana and Pike’s Peak in the USA, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) and the Monaco and Macau Grands Prix, the Indy 500 in Indianapolis, and the Patrick Dempsey Racing team and WTCC endurance race. Ayrton Senna and Steve McQueen also remain members of the TAG Heuer family of ambassadors.
