Worldwide Sales of
Toyota Hybrids Surpass 10 Million Units
Toyota Motor Corporation announced recently that cumulative global sales of its hybrid vehicles reached 10.05 million units as of January 31, surpassing the 10 million-unit mark . More than a numerical milestone, this demonstrates the staying power of a technology that is now emerging as a mainstream solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. Helping to mitigate the environmental effects of automobiles has long been a priority for Toyota. Based on the stance that environmentally-friendly vehicles can only truly have a significant positive impact if they are widely used, Toyota has encouraged the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles across the globe. Toyota launched the Coaster Hybrid EV minibus in August 1997 and the Prius―the world’s first mass-produced hybrid passenger vehicle―in December of the same year. Since then, Toyota hybrid vehicles have received tremendous support from consumers around the world. Takayuki Yoshitsugu, Chief Representative of Middle East & North Africa Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation, said, “We are grateful to each and every one of our customers who has supported us in our journey towards sustainable mobility and helped us achieve this important milestone. The steady increase in hybrid sales reflects the worldwide appeal of hybrid vehicles backed by Toyota’s significant efforts in developing ever better cars. Our hybrid technology delivers not only great fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions, but it also provides a smooth, comfortable and engaging driving experience, which leads to the highest satisfaction rates.

We remain committed to continue working hand-in-hand with our customers as we look to tackle global environmental issues and create cars that exceed customer expectations.” As reductions in greenhouse gas emissions increasingly became a problem of global magnitude, the first-generation Prius represented Toyota’s response to the resource and environment-related issues of the twenty-first century. The Prius development team was convinced that, whatever the results of their efforts, the development of a hybrid vehicle was essential for the future, and that they had to do what was necessary rather than what was simply possible. With this in mind, the team unveiled the world’s first mass-production hybrid passenger vehicle to the world. The Prius proved so popular with customers that it became a byword for an ‘environmentally-friendly vehicle.’ The Toyota Hybrid System (THS), which was incorporated in the first-generation Prius, evolved into THS II in 2003, and was thereafter rolled out in a wide range of Toyota vehicles. The fourth-generation Prius, which became the first vehicle to be built on Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), was developed not only with environmental performance in mind, but also with outstanding driving performance for customers wanting to purchase a car that was fun to drive. Since Toyota launched its first hybrid vehicle 20 years ago, the circumstances surrounding environmentally-friendly vehicles have changed dramatically. The growing popularity of the Prius led to the creation of a new customer standard of choosing cars based on their environmental performance.
18 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
As the number of companies developing and launching hybrid vehicles increased, so a new segment of ‘hybrid vehicles’ was established. In addition, now that customers around the world are opting to purchase hybrid vehicles and other fuel-efficient vehicles, the entire automobile industry has been able to contribute to the solution of global environmental problems. As of January 31, 2017, Toyota estimates that the use of Toyota’s HVs in lieu of conventional gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance has resulted in approximately 77 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions and has saved approximately 29 million kiloliters of gasoline. Toyota announced the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 in October 2015, setting challenges that it will undertake to help reduce the negative impacts of automobiles on the global environment to as close to zero as possible, and to contribute to the creation of a sustainable society. Toyota has positioned hybrid technologies as core environmental technologies for the 21st century. Hybrid encompasses all of the component technologies necessary for the development of environmentally-friendly vehicles, from battery electric to fuel cell hydrogen vehicles, which facilitate the use of different fuel combinations.

TO SHOWCASE TOYOTA KIKAI
Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros. Co., sole agents for TOYOTA vehicles in the State of Qatar will showcase TOYOTA KIKAI during Qatar Motor Show. INTRODUCING
RANGE ROVER VELAR
T
he luxury SUV was created in 1970 when Land Rover launched the original Range Rover. Almost half a century later that spirit of innovation continues with the introduction of the fourth member of the Range Rover family. Elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and pioneering consumer technology are the hallmarks of the new Range Rover Velar. Land Rover Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.” Refined for every occasion, for every terrain, Velar uses unique sustainable materials and advanced engineering to continue Land Rover’s drive to go Above and Beyond. The origin of the Velar name (pronounced vel-ar) dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the Sixties: the pioneers of the luxury SUV landscape.
22 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin velare meaning to veil or cover.
The Qatar Motor Show is quickly gaining popularity and people from all over the world are flocking to view the latest and greatest in the automotive industry. It’s the perfect opportunity for manufacturers to showcase what they’ve done over the first quarter of the year. It’s almost like an extension of the Geneva Motor Show. Though not as coveted just yet, it has arguably even more amazing metal on the display and everyone is super nice and friendly. Enthusiasts and regular Joes checking out the cars all having a chat about the vehicles on display, it’s just great. Though we’ll get to see some amazing high-performance machinery, we thought we’d actually cover three mainstream models which people will be driving every day. They’re a more accurate representation of the real automotive world in terms of cars most of us can afford and actually drive on a regular basis.
MITSUBISHI PAJERO The basic design and concept of the fourthgen Pajero has been around from 2006, and although it’s almost 12 years old at this point, it still feels modern and extremely capable. Mitsubishi has been constantly introducing small revisions and changes throughout the years to keep it in line with its competition, and they’ve done a mighty fine job it has to be said. The last major refresh was back in 2015 when the Pajero received numerous safety and design upgrades, so as expected, not a lot is changed for the newest 2017 model year vehicle. That said however, it’s still one of the most capable SUVs for sale today. It manages to offer an amazing blend of practicality, luxury and offroad capabilities, hence why it remained in production for so long.

Visually, it’s instantly recognizable as a Pajero. There’s no mistaking it for anything else. Newer models can be recognized by the projector-style headlights, different grille and somewhat revised bumpers with foglights moved out to the side a bit more. It also received LED daytime running lights and a new spare tire cover. Inside Mitsubishi went all out and made sure to make it feel as luxurious and spacious as most of its much younger rivals. The Pajero is properly old when compared to its competitors, but it doesn’t show its age one bit. The new metallic trim really sets the cabin apart, especially when matched with the piano black accents available for the VR II trim.
The Exceed and Super Exceed trims get wood grain trim along with additional sound deadening material. There’s a choice of engines. The 3.8-liter 24-valve SOHC MIVEC V6 is the most powerful of the bunch, making 250 hp and 329 Nm of torque. It’s responsive with plenty of poke for overtaking, pulling strong everywhere in the rev range. The smaller 3.0-liter 24-Valve V6 SOHC makes 184 hp and 266 Nm of torque. It’s not as powerful as its larger sibling, but it’s more than capable of coping with the Pajero’s bulky body. When specced with the all-wheel drive system it’s a proper go-anywhere off-road monster.
N EW S
MITSUBISHI MONTERO SPORT Known as the Montero S (short for Montero Sport), it’s actually known as the Pajero Sport in a lot of European markets. The Montero S is a product of the massive SUV craze which struck the world a few years back. People went berserk for SUVs and pickups all of a sudden, and manufacturers, ready to profit on it, started introducing new models by the dozen. Mitsubishi has never been one to do things the conventional way, so they steered clear off of the SUV bandwagon at the beginning, making the original Pajero alone. Realizing the huge potential in a smaller, more affordable platform however, they came up with the Montero S you see today.
28 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
NEWS
From the outside, it looks no more different than your regular medium to large size SUV. It’s not Mitsubishi’s best styling moment if we’re completely honest, but it’s by no means ugly. You can clearly tell form follows function, which is exactly the way things should be when discussing practical SUVs. Although it’s pretty conventional in terms of size and silhouette, the designers have been clearly let loose to be able to do what they want with the styling, because it looks wild. There’s a ton of shapes, crests and sharp angles both at the front and the rear, but it just sort of matches and goes along together really well. The chromed strips at the front scattered along the entire fascia shouldn’t look that good, but they somehow do. It’s the same at the back. These ‘teardrop’ like taillights look weird in pictures and in real life when you first see them, but once you get used to them they start to grow on you. Inside it’s the same story. It may be a relatively new model but Mitsubishi went all out to make sure they got things right the first time.
Don’t expect Pajero levels of luxury because it’s not even in the same price range, but it can more than hold its own against the competition. Mitsubishi paid a lot of attention to the details and quality of the cabin and that really shines through from the moment you get in it. There’s a dynamic, fluent theme to the dashboard and center panel, presenting a nice contrast to the quirky exterior. There’s quality leather on the seats and certain parts of the dash and steering wheel, and Mitsubishi has somehow managed to nicely incorporate wood and aluminum accent trim pieces. This might be the first time wood and aluminum went together really well. Other than that there’s not a lot to talk about. The few plastics you can find are of the premium variety and there’s a ton of headroom and legroom in all rows. It feels like a quality item through and through. Engine-wise, you get two options. The 3.0-liter V6 MIVEC makes 218 hp and 284 Nm of torque, plenty of oomph to move the relatively light Montero S at an adequate pace. The four-wheel drive system is a work of art, capable of getting you out of almost any situation.

BAIC

J40
N
ow here’s something a little bit different. The Chinese car manufacturers are extremely good at copying popular models and selling them at two and even three times cheaper. We’ve seen it with the BMW X5 imitation and more recently the Range Rover Evoque one. Here’s one you probably didn’t expect. Called the Baic J40, it borrows most of its styling cues from the Jeep Wrangler, and from a distance, you really couldn’t tell it apart.
Most ordinary people will think it’s a Jeep even after getting inside it. It really is that well thought out. They’ve nailed it down to the wheel arches, the two-tone color combination and even the rear spare wheel mounted on the back. The headlights are the only thing which really give it away, as it appears they’ve been nicked off a Suzuki Grand Vitara. Inside it’s good but not amazing. You get what you pay for and that really shows in the J40. It’s not that it’s bad per say, it’s just that it’s nowhere near as good as the actual Wrangler. The Jeep was built to last and you can feel it, from the materials down to the build quality. The J40 is an average at best, but it gets the job done at a fraction of the cost. If you wanted to drive a Wrangler but didn’t have the funds do to it, here’s a genuine alternative. It’s powered by a 2.5-liter 16V DOHC fourcylinder using the G5CA moniker. It makes around 150 horsepower and 217 Nm of torque, not exactly Wrangler rivaling but not bad either.

MERCEDES-AMG E 43 AT QATAR MOTOR SHOW 2017
Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the Authorized General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, proudly presents Mercedes-AMG E 43 4MATIC at the seventh edition of Qatar Motor Show 2017. The looks of the E 43 4MATIC also render it immediately recognisable as a member of the AMG family. Apart from underscoring the powerful and self-assured appearance, three large openings in the front apron also ensure an optimum flow of air to the coolers. Sporty look with model-specific details: the interior design The interior reinforces the dynamic calibre of the new E 43 4MATIC with numerous individual details. The driver and front passenger find a secure position in the sports seats even when driving at speed, thanks to the improved lateral support. The upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre in black (optionally: nappa leather) features a distinctive layout and red topstitching. To match the seat design, the door centre panels and the dashboard are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with red topstitching.

High on power, low on consumption: the AMG 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine The V6 biturbo engine boasts a high power output combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. The high power output of 295 kW (401 hp) is attributable, among other things, to new, larger turbochargers and the higher charge-air pressure of 1.1 bar. Installed close to the engine, the two turbochargers are especially spontaneous in their response. This package guarantees performance on a par with many a sports car: the new E 43 4MATIC reaches a speed of 100 km/h from a standing start in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The AMG powerplant can be identified by the red aluminium insert in the engine cover. Short shift times, high efficiency: the 9G-TRONIC The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is specially matched to the requirements of the new E 43 4MATIC. The AMG developers have managed to reduce the shift times of the 9-speed transmission by means of a dedicated software application.
NEWS
The multiple downshift function enables more spontaneous short bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in “Sport” and “Sport Plus” transmission modes makes for an even more emotional driving experience. Defined ignition intervention additionally enables faster gear shifting than in “Eco” and “Comfort” modes. “Manual” mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. More agility: the sports suspension based on AIR BODY CONTROL For added agility, more neutral cornering behaviour and higher traction even when driving at speed, the developers in Affalterbach have designed a dedicated sports suspension on the basis of the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension system. The Adaptive Damping System also features in a model-specific configuration and offers a choice of three modes – “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”. This provides for broader scope between a high level of comfort for longer journeys and sporty driving dynamics. Characteristics at the tap of a finger: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT With the five DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes “Eco”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual”, the driver can tailor the characteristics of the E 43 4MATIC Coupé to individual preferences at the tap of a finger. The available range extends
from efficient and comfortable to extremely sporty. This modifies key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. Independently of the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, the driver has the option of pressing the “M” button to switch directly to manual mode, in which gearshifts are executed exclusively using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. The suspension set-ups can also be selected as necessary. The DYNAMIC SELECT “Sport” and “Sport Plus” transmission modes are configured with a clear emphasis on driving dynamics on the new E 43 4MATIC. This results from an agile accelerator pedal characteristic with direct set-up and emotional gear shifting with reduced shift times, double declutching and deactivation of certain cylinders. Direct and with clear feedback: speed-sensitive sports steering The speed-sensitive sports steering features a variable ratio on the E 43 4MATIC. It stands out with its precise, highly authentic feedback. Steering power assistance is available in a choice of two modes – “Comfort” or “Sport”. The relevant characteristics are automatically activated depending on the selected DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalised in Individual mode. Manual torque is increased in “Sport” mode, providing more feedback on driving conditions.

NASSER BIN KHALED AUTOMOBILES LAUNCHES
MERCEDES-AMG SLC 43 AT QATAR MOTOR SHOW 2017
Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the Authorized General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, proudly presents Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 at the seventh edition of Qatar Motor Show 2017. Celebrating its 20-year anniversary, the SLK compact roadster was relaunched last year in 2016 with a new name – the SLC – as well as significantly optimised technology and an enhanced look. The sporty range-topping Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 comes with 270 kW (367 hp). As part of the facelift, the Mercedes-Benz designers have further honed the cult roadster’s sporty look. The new front section, where the steeply raked radiator grille elongates the appearance of the arrow-shaped bonnet, is particularly striking. SLC models feature a diamond radiator grille as standard. The extensive array of standard equipment includes Active Brake Assist (previously known as COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS), ATTENTION ASSIST, panoramic vario-roof, multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather, Audio 20 CD, air conditioning and LED tail lamps. With DYNAMIC SELECT the vehicle characteristics can be adjusted instantly at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the engine, transmission, steering and suspension (the latter in conjunction with the Dynamic Handling package) at the driver’s behest. For optimum visibility on country roads and motorways, when cornering and on bends, the LED Intelligent Light System automatically adapts to all light and driving conditions. Further optional extras include Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus in conjunction with the LED Intelligent Light System, which allows main beam to remain switched on without dazzling other road users. A feature that continues to be unique to the SLC is the panoramic varioroof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL this glass roof is lightened or darkened at the touch of a button.
66 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
Operating the electrohydraulic roof is now even more straightforward. If when opening or closing the roof the vehicle has to move off due to the traffic conditions, the process which was started when at a standstill can be continued up to a speed of approx. 40 km/h. Another new feature is the automatic boot separator (in conjunction with the optional vario-roof convenience feature or optional KEYLESS-GO): if the separator is in the upper position for increased boot capacity, it automatically moves down when the roof is opened. Driving Performance is the AMG brand promise – and the MercedesAMG SLC 43 lives up to it in impressive style. The new model combines a 270 kW (367 hp), 520 Nm, 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine with a modified version of the AMG sports suspension familiar from the SLK 55. Furthermore, the SLC 43 comes with the option of AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with adaptive damping adjustment. Even greater transverse dynamics is made possible by the optional Handling package with mechanical limited-slip differential on the rear axle.

MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS COUPE AT QATAR MOTOR SHOW 2017
Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the Authorized General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, proudly presents the new E Class Coupe at the seventh edition of Qatar Motor Show 2017. With its expressive coupé-esque proportions, clear and sensual design and long-distance comfort for four people, the new E-Class Coupé combines the beauty and classic virtues of a grand tourer with state-of-the-art technology. Sporty, luxurious interior with refined details The interior of the new E-Class Coupé embodies the synthesis of sporty emotion and luxurious intelligence. The instrument cluster in the driver’s direct line of vision shows virtual instruments which can be represented in three different styles: “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”. High-grade materials and contemporary colour landscapes come together to create a sporty, contemporary luxury. Especially for the E-Class Coupé, there is a choice of two new, light wood trim packages in open-pore and high-gloss finishes. Precisely executed seams give emphasis to the seat design. The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the optionally available enhanced ambient lighting with 64 colours. Larger and more luxurious With a length of 4826 mm (+123 mm), a width of 1860 mm (+74 mm) and a height of 1430 mm (+33 mm), the new E-Class Coupé clearly outstrips its predecessor in terms of length, width and height. The principal beneficiary of the wider track, with 1605 mm at the front (+67 mm) and 1609 mm at the rear (+68 mm), is the driving dynamics.
68 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
The significantly larger footprint compared with the previous model is to the benefit of passengers with extra spaciousness and comfort. They profit especially in terms of rear knee room, front and rear shoulder room as well as rear headroom. In each of the four fully fledged seats with coupé-specific individual seat character, the driver and passengers enjoy genuine comfort on long journeys as well as the classic virtues of a grand tourer. Performance with high-tech Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, all equipped with the ECO start/stop function and complying with the Euro 6 emission standard - among them a new four-cylinder diesel engine - make for lively performance and driving enjoyment. The DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping is available as optional equipment. This suspension is likewise lowered. Using a switch in the centre console for the DYNAMIC SELECT system included as standard, the driver can vary the damping characteristics of this suspension. Three modes are available, offering a wide range of adjustment options: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. Alternatively, the new E-Class Coupé can be equipped with multichamber air suspension, including all-round roll/pitch/heave stabilisation. Advantages of this system: three chambers of different size in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it possible to control the hardness of the suspension in three stages. In this way, the occupants enjoy soft basic suspension, along with the secure feeling of good handling stability at higher speeds.

The multi-chamber air suspension is augmented by a continuous, electronically controlled adaptive damping system. The damping at each individual wheel is adjusted fully automatically to suit the current driving situation and condition of the road – such as in the case of evasive manoeuvres or on rough tracks. The system therefore delivers good ride comfort along with excellent driving dynamics. Using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch, the driver can also select different suspension characteristics in combination with the AIR BODY CONTROL system: “Comfort”, ECO, “Sport”, “Sport +” and Individual.

E-Class innovations on board
E-Class Coupé with tradition
As a member of the current E-Class family, the new Coupé is significantly more intelligent than its predecessor. It comes with all the features of the E-Class, the most intelligent executive saloon. Active Brake Assist comes as standard. It is able to warn the driver of an imminent collision, provide optimum support with emergency braking and, if necessary, also autonomously apply the brakes. In addition to slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing in the danger zone ahead of the vehicle.
As an exclusive and sporty coupé, the latest member of the E-Class family can look back on an almost fifty-year history. Its first ancestor was unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in 1968 (at that time known as the “Stroke Eight” coupé). Further model series followed – for a while also under the name CLK. Each generation combined superb design with agile sportiness and contemporary luxury at a high level.

ou can compare specification sheets, numbers and anything else you’d like, but when it comes down to real world performance, the fact of the matter is that Mercedes makes some of the best cars currently on the market. We’re not talking outright speed, comfort or efficiency as separate entities, but as one amazing package which has no equivalent in the automotive world. When we were invited to drive the newest E-Class recently, we just couldn’t say no. BMW and Audi may have their traits, but you never miss out on a Mercedes test drive, especially when it’s their uber-sedan turned limousine and coupe, the innovative and new E-Class. We got a chance to test the car in the city before heading out to The Pearl and fully exploring its abilities there. Introduction The newest iteration of the E-Class was unveiled just recently, and it’s thoroughly changed for the 2017 model year. The fifth-gen W213 model is at the very beginning of its journey in the luxury market, but it’s already stirred up quite a row. Thanks to its amazing styling, state-of-the-art technology and sumptuous cabin it’s already claimed several firsts, as well as a couple of awards in the process.
74 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
Because the S-Class isn’t due for an update a couple more months, the E-Class is as of now Mercedes’ latest and most modern product. Exterior Well, if the exterior is any indication, it has no reason to worry. Starting at the front, both the coupe and the sedan share the same fascia. The enormous grille up front is still present, along with the traditional Mercedes logo. It gets LED headlights for both the dipped and main beam, along with LED DRLs. Aside from minor styling cues, you can view it like a larger C-Class or a smaller S-Class. On one side, comparing it to its smaller sibling is somewhat disrespectful to the E-Class, but on the other, it’s a real compliment that it’s up there with the S-Class. In all honesty, Mercedes’ visual language at the moment is probably the best in the business. It doesn’t matter what model we’re talking about, they all look gorgeous. On the midsize E-Class, the design looks better than ever. Naturally, the coupe and sedan version differ at the back quite a bit. Whereas the coupe gets sleeker lines and a more defined rear window, the sedan gets accentuated rear quarter panels and a more traditional sedan-like squared off end.
MERCEDES-BENZ
Both debut a brand-new lighting sequence for the LED taillights. When the doors are opened, the taillight LEDs illuminate successively from the center towards the sides. Vice versa, when you’re locking the car, the light sequence runs in the opposite direction. Both get an up and down dimming feature as well. It basically ‘says goodbye’ to the driver and operates similar to the familiar welcome lighting gesture with the blue optical-fiber show in the headlights. It’s purely aesthetic, but it makes you feel really, really special. Interior Apart from a smaller rear passenger compartment and a lowered roofline at the back, both sedan and coupe versions are practically the same. Clearly inspired by the larger S-Class, the new E-Class boasts a lot of similar if not exactly the same features. Let’s start with the dashboard design. Lower trims have to make do with analogue gauges and a seveninch screen in the middle, but the flagship models, such as the E400, get a 12.3-inch display with clear and easy to read dials. Paired to another 12.3-inch infotainment screen right next to it, both screens are almost a design element at this point.
Although they look slightly weird when you first get in the car (because of their size), you quickly get accustomed to the displays and actually find them a joy to use and interact with. The steering wheel gets touch-sensitive buttons borrowed from the S-Class, operating the redesigned infotainment system with new menus and functions. Merc’s Linguatronic voice control got a revamp so it’s now smarter, and there’s a Comand rotary dial to operate everything. Energy-saving LEDs lined inside the door panels and dashboard make up for most of the interior lighting, with an optional Burmester sound system with a whopping 23 speakers blasting high-quality audio. The Comand Online system comes with smartphone integration, Apple CarPlay and Goggle Android Auto. The E-Class receives Live Trafic Information and Concierge Service just like the S-Class. Customers can choose between a sportier, blacked out design for the cabin or a more luxurious option in the form of two exclusive light wood trim packages in either open-pore of high-gloss finishes. The AMG Line gives you even more color choices along with strong two-tone contrasts of the leather appointments in black and classic red or black and white.

Engine and Performance The E400 utilizes a 3.5-liter V6 with 333 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque. You won’t find a small four-cylinder here. Willing to rev anywhere in the rev range, the V6 provides an amazing aural experience for the occupants and any bystanders outside which happen to be lucky enough to hear it. It’s definitely not an AMG, neither at full chat nor at idle, but despite the fact that it was tuned for refinement and comfort, it provides a nice V6 symphony. Available as a rear-wheel drive proposition in standard guise, it can also be equipped with the optional 4Matic all-wheel drive system. There’s no manual, so the only transmission option is the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic. The RWD E400 can hit 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, with the AWD one achieving the same sprint in 5.5 seconds.

In the corners it’s a real shocker the first time you drive it. You expect a somewhat soft and wallowy ride, given how amazingly well it copes with bumps, but it’s as flat as any other sporty Mercedes model. I was astonished with how something so large and refined can drive so well the first time I threw it hard into a corner. It would give a lot of sports cars a run for their money, that’s for sure. The AMG-equipped models are even stiffer, cornering absolutely flat without sacrificing any comfort. Well played Mercedes, well played indeed. Conclusion The newest E400 is the last in a long line of innovative, luxurious Mercedes products which continue to be the benchmark for the rest of the manufacturers. As if there was ever any doubt whether the new E400 would present the best in-class option, allow me to say this: nothing can come even close to beating it.

LEXUS LC500 ITING DRIVE IN HAWAII

THE RESULT OF ENGINEERING AND DESIGN TEAMS WORKING TOGETHER
We often get invited to test drives from various car manufacturers, and more often than not we end up in popular and famous destinations like California, Italy or even Spain. Then there are the occasional oddballs such as Mexico or France. When Lexus rang up and asked if I’d like to take the new LC500 for a spin, i naturally said yes with great enthusiasm. I asked about the destination and they surprisingly said Hawaii. This, in case you were wondering, doesn’t happen that often. A few days later we find ourselves in Kona, a district in the large State of Hawaii. We arrived with no preconceived notions of what Hawaii is or should look like. We all imagine it as this wonderful picturesque place as seen in the movies. The truth however, is that it’s so much more than that. It’s not just gorgeous beaches and amazing neighborhoods. The entire land is scattered with small hills, valleys and volcanoes. Yes, you read that right, actual volcanoes.

After letting our eyes get used to the gorgeousness that is Hawaii and the Kona region, we got introduced to the LC500, and boy where we in for a shock. Exterior The result of engineering and design teams working together, the LC500 is a pure example of form AND function. It’s aesthetically jaw-dropping, but everything you see on the exterior is completely functional. It’s not often that production cars end up looking like their concept counterparts, but in the case of the LC500, that’s completely the case. They changed a couple of things here and there to comply with laws and regulations, but it’s mostly a straight carryover from the concept vehicle we saw some time ago. Great marks for Lexus there.
It’s naturally aspirated, so you get an instant shove in the back and a very loud roar from the exhausts

Up front, the LC500 has Lexus written all over. First, there’s that massive, signature Lexus grille, with a smart-looking 3D mesh design. The headlights are similar to those found in the GS and RX, with a swept-back styling, but they’re much more dramatic. In fact, they’re even more aggressive than the ones on the original LF-LC concept, which happens once in a lifetime. Below the headlights you’ll find vertical LED running lights, along with two small air vents which help with aerodynamics. The hood sits low and is slanted downwards slightly, boasting rather aggressive crest lines which hide the monster of an engine underneath.
Round back, it looks like a proper spaceship, complete with massive thrusters in the form of dual exhaust tips on each side of the bumper. They’re actually fake and hide quad exhaust pipes underneath, but still look cool nonetheless. It isn’t as contemporary styled as the new Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche’s 911, but it definitely turns a lot more heads. People catch a second or third glimpse simply because they have no idea what it is. In the flesh, it’s even more mesmerizing, because there’s nothing like it on the road today. A Lexus turning more heads than a Porsche 911, who would have thought?

Interior
Engine and Performance
Climbing inside you’re greeted by lots of expensive, high-quality materials and immaculate fit and finish. The design is nowhere near as outlandish as the exterior, but it’s elegant and thoroughly modern. You can’t find a single cheap plastic in it, not even on the gear lever. As far as cabins go, this is a nice place to be in. Designed as the most luxurious milemuncher, it does exactly what Lexus wanted it to.
First we got to drive the LC500h, which is actually considered the flagship model. As the name might suggest, it’s a hybrid, utilizing a 3.5-liter V6 along with a powerful electric motor and a powerful lithium-ion battery pack. It makes 354 bhp and will hit 100 KMH in under 5 seconds. . The hybrid version uses an innovative “dual transmission” setup. A fourspeed automatic transmission located in the back allows the electric motor to operate more efficiently and power the car alone, without the internal combustion engine’s assistance. The stock CVT transmission attached to the V6 alternates between three fixed ratios, which when combined with the first three downstream gears from the conventional automatic give the rations from one to nine. The tenth gear is basically the final ratio from the auto and is the only time the hybrid portion of the drivetrain operates as a CVT. The weight distribution is amazing for a hybrid and it actually handled fairly decent.
The optional carbon fiber roof is a great addition especially since no other model features it. The seats fit you snug and support you at all times, even if you’re on the larger side like I am. Although it’s an amazing vehicle, it almost didn’t make it into production. Putting it into serial production was a challenge with all of the costs associated, but Akio Toyoda insisted on it and here we are, driving the actual product. We have to say, the finished car is two if not three times better than what the concept car offered and promised us. If the LFA were to have a spiritual successor, this would be it, despite the fact that they lie on opposite ends of the high-end premium car segment.

“The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” Dr Peter Mertens Senior Vice President, Research & Development Volvo Car Group.
It didn’t have the boat-like feeling a lot of these large, luxurious coupes have. Not an LFA, but definitely going in the right direction. Then i was given the keys to a ‘standard’ LC500. Instead of a hybrid powertrain, it utilizes a more traditional engine. In this case, the engine in question is a 5.0-liter V8 with 470 bhp and 528 Nm of torque. It’s naturally aspirated, so you get an instant shove in the back and a very loud roar from the exhausts. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 10-speed auto, which is really smooth and quick. Though it’s fast and handled the twisties on the volcanic mountain roads beautifully, it encourages you to drive in a relaxed manner. You simply breath along, pushing on at a seven tenths pace at best.

IT’S FAST, POISED AND COMFORTABLE, BUT MOST OF ALL, EXTREMELY LUXURIOUS
”
And that’s where the LC500 likes to be. It’s fast, poised and comfortable, but most of all, extremely luxurious. It’s not a super car, but it’s not a sports car either. What it is, is something in between. A perfect mix of both, with added sumptuous luxury as an extra. It’s brilliant, and i wouldn’t mind taking one back home.

FERRARI GTC4LUSSO T MATURE LOOK WITH A TEENAGER HEART By: Tarek Hawchar

e recently did a review of the first-generation Ferrari GTC4Lusso, when we got to drive it on some twisty mountain roads complete with the mandatory gorgeous sceneries. Needless to say, it felt like a true Ferrari and we absolutely adored it. So you can probably imagine our enthusiasm when Ferrari said we could drive the brand-new GTC4Lusso T. We booked the flights, packed all of our gear and headed out to the airport in Doha. Our destination? The beautiful and sunny Monteriggioni commune in the Italian region of Tuscany. Unfortunately, the weather en route to the airport was anything but sunny. After having our flight delayed, we had to wait for a break in the weather before we could fly out to Italy and drive one of Ferrari’s finest creations. It was an agonizing 24-hour trip from Doha to Dubai then a connecting flight in Germany, before finally arriving in Bologna, Italy. When we got to the hotel it was 3 am, and the test drive was scheduled for the next morning, 9 am sharp. That gave us a window of about 6 hours to rest, but with all the excitement, we barely got half that in actual sleep time. Seeing as how my bag got lost in transportation and I didn’t have it with me the majority of the trip (yes, really), we got up nice and early so as not to miss our 9

am session. We knew we were in for a treat, but the following 500 kilometers on amazing roads were a lot more than anyone could have expected. Following a short and brief talk with the folks over at Ferrari, we were handed over the keys to our GTC4Lusso T. On the outside, it’s actually not that different to the V12-powered GTC4Lusso. In fact, it’s completely identical. Sporting the new Ferrari corporate face as the one found on the 488 GTB and the F12, it’s a complete clone of its V12 predecessor. Everything from the front bumper winglets and race-inspired diffuser down to the rear quarter panels and even wheels is familiar. All in, there’s no way you can tell the new car apart from the old one when stationary, apart from maybe the V8 soundtrack when it’s turned on and the rims. The GTC4Lusso T is a prime example of why change isn’t always better. Although it looks exactly like the car before it, the original GTC4Lusso wasn’t exactly dated to begin with. In production for just one year, it got a different name (previously FF) and the new design language we mentioned. So, in a way, the new turbo version is just as modern and innovative. The shooting brake rear end is mesmerizing, turning the GTC4Lusso into something resembling a super car wagon, if such a thing ever existed.
ROA D T R I P
Getting inside reminds you of the original V12 GTC4Lusso as well. Though it looks completely identical, Ferrari was keen to point out that the new T version boasts a Dual Cockpit architecture. In lay man’s terms, it means it received a similar information display right in front of the passenger so that he can get in on the driving experience as well. Or probably scream once he sees the incredible rate of speed the new turbo car is capable of enforcing. Either way, it looks cool and definitely brings a touch of innovation to the interior. Also new is the 10.25-inch HD capacitive touchscreen which we found quick and engaging. There’s no lag and it offers tons of options. We’ve never been particularly excited about infotainment in a Ferrari, but this one really makes you want to use it more often. Kudos to Ferrari there. The two-tone design is carried over, with an aluminum trim as standard and a carbon-fiber one as optional. The F1 wheel has to be our favorite part of the entire cabin, apart from the seats maybe. Inspired by their racing cars, it features a flat bottom and F1-styled buttons for everything, from the turn indicators and windscreen wipers to the Manettino switch. We got a chance to drive the car in various type of conditions, and it performed flawlessly everywhere.
Heading out to the twisties, we got stuck in rush hour but the car handled it amazingly well. Play your tunes, set the A/C to just right and give interested and excited bystanders the occasional rev. It’s the perfect super car experience. IT didn’t feel too big for the tiny Italian city streets either.

A Lamborghini feels massive in comparison. It’s nippy and agile at normal speeds, something most people probably don’t expect. We then got some open roads where we had a chance to test the new engine, and what an engine it is. A 3.9-liter V8 with two turbochargers, it’s actually a detuned 488 GTB motor. In GTC4Lusso T guise it produces 601 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque. Although it loses 80 horsepower on the V12 GTC4Lusso, it gains 64 Nm of torque, but more importantly, both the

usable power and torque are way down low, so it feels a lot faster. Peak power is delivered at 7,500 rpm, but 80-90% of it is available from 5,000 rpm, so you don’t have to rev it to over 7,000 rpm all the time like you did in the V12. What’s more, all of the torque comes in between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm, making the midrange punch almost overwhelming. The end result is nothing short of breathtaking. Any gear, any revs, pin the throttle and it’s off like a rocket.

Because it ditched the all-wheel drive system and power is sent to the rear wheels alone, it’s 60 kilograms lighter, and you can definitely feel it. Ferrari went back to the more traditional RWD layout but kept the rear-wheel steering system. In the corners, it’s a real joy to throw around, and when you find an open straightaway you better hang on. The sprint to 100 km/h takes just 3.5 seconds and it will go on to 320 km/h.
Primarily designed at a younger audience, the new GTC4Lusso T is a much more usable car than the V12 predecessor. Do you miss the V12 engine? If I’m being honest, yes, a bit, but the torque more than makes up for it. Plus, you can truly daily drive this thing, making it that much better.

hen a large, well-known manufacturer invites us to a debut of their brand-new luxury vehicle, we get very excited as you can probably imagine. The likes of BMW’s 7-Series and Mercedes’ S-Class get us properly eager to get going, especially as the Germans basically pioneered the entire luxury limo segment. So, when a company such as Hyundai calls you up and tells you they’ve got a new luxury limo for testing, you probably don’t expect to jump in joy, but we did. And there’s a very good reason for that. You see, in the last decade or so the Koreans have gotten incredibly good at producing vehicles. Everything from hothatchbacks to sporty sedans and luxury limos. In 2015 Hyundai turned Genesis into a subdivision rather than just a model. Think of it as BMW’s M or Mercedes’ AMG, expect they focus on making things more sumptuous and not necessarily faster. The Genesis G90, the brand’s first model, caught us by surprise and wormed its way into our hearts.
Sumptuous comfort and amazing design sum up the G80’s cabin perfectly
100 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
CAR REVIEW It was a genuine luxury limo which more than rivaled Germany’s finest. So, when Skyline Automotive offered us the chance to drive the smaller G80 we immediately jumped onboard and said yes. We had to drive to The Pearl to enjoy this amazing car, but hey, a luxurious island isn’t exactly a horror story is it? Exterior Although it’s based on the Genesis New York concept, the final production G80 is somewhat different. That’s not to say necessarily bad however, because it is spectacular in its own way. Things have certainly changed a lot since Hyundai first entered the market, and the Genesis brand along with the new G80 proves how far they’ve really come. First thing’s first though, let’s start with the way this thing looks. Some styling cues have been borrowed heavily from its larger sibling, the G90, but you can tell the both apart quite easily. The front grille is similar to the G90’s both in shape and in size, and it has the same horizontal slats running across. It’s also got identical LED foglights just above the air inlets on the front fascia, but the front end is actually quite different to the G90. A unique chrome insert wraps around the inner point of the foglights, creating a “C” shape around them. It basically separates the inlets from the air dam just below it.

CAR REVIEW
We thought they would use the same headlights to cut costs down, but they haven’t. The design is totally different. They’re shorter than the ones found on the G90, but they recess into the body a lot more. They’ve also got this weird but cool 90-degree bent on the outside which comes to a sharp point on the inside. Looks are subjective, but we’re liking the G80 more and more the longer we look at it. Round back it gets oddly-styled taillights which come to an abrupt end on the rear deck lid, with a reverse light running the entire length of the lower edge. The entire rear quarters swoop up to create this fin-like element, as does the deck lid. Twin dual-exhaust outlets hide in the black insert, with thin reflectors located just above them. Overall, it’s extremely elegant yet sporty. It’s chiseled like no Hyundai (Genesis) before it. Compared to the somewhat blandlooking Germans, it’s a real breath of fresh air. Interior Step inside and you’ll immediately notice that Genesis wasn’t bluffing when they said they will rival the likes of Cadillac, BWM and Mercedes. It really is incredibly luxurious inside. Sumptuous comfort
102 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
and amazing design sum up the G80’s cabin perfectly. The first thing you notice is the amazing wood trim which has been hand-selected. Instead of being finished in a shiny, glossy lacquer, the trims have a matte finish to them which really makes the G80 stand out from the rest of the crowd. A standard eight-inch touchscreen with all the goodies you’d expect provides plenty of fun, but the upgraded 9.2-inch touchscreen with a different infotainment unit, a 64GB SSD and a 12-channel amp is next level. The seats are superb. Just the right amount of support so you don’t roll in the corners with amazing comfort abilities. For lack of a better word, it feels like you’re driving on a cloud. Engine and Performance The G80 uses an all-new platform which Genesis claims is ultra-rigid and stiff. It’s been tested on the Nurburgring, so we’ll go ahead and believe them on that. Underneath it uses a multi-link suspension setup with five-link geometry in the rear and a fully independent system up front. A couple of 18 and 19-inch wheels are available and the steering is electric, as most modern cars are these days.
CAR REVIEW
It actually gives amazing feedback, despite the car’s size. It’s light in city conditions but weighs up nicely when out on the road. It’s not going to challenge a Ferrari, but it is precise and quick. Well done Genesis. The G80 gets a choice of two engines. The first one is a 3.8-liter V6 that we’re more than familiar with. In the G80 it produces 311 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 397 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. If you only care about luxury, the V6 will get you going just nicely. It’s not particularly fast, but it’s average for its class. A decent mid-range shove and plenty of low-range grunt. It lacks something at the top end but you never rev it out in day to day situations anyway. Then we get to the 5-liter “Tau” V8. It’s actually the same unit that’s been featured on Ward’s Ten Best Engines three times in the last ten years. With 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 519 Nm of torque it’s a true monster in a straight line. Put your foot down and it goes. Because the eight-speed auto used by both engines is quick too, there’s no lag. The optional HTRAC AWD system makes the G80 that much safer, but it’s not a necessity in our opinion.
“
IT’S SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE, AND THAT GIVES IT ITS VERY OWN PIECE OF THE MARKET
”
Conclusion We came into this test thinking we’d like the G80, and we were right. Just like its big brother, the G90, it’s something different and unique, and that gives it its very own piece of the market. It performed flawlessly regardless if you were driving it or relaxing in the back seat. It’s available at “Skyline Automotive”, and we highly recommend you check it out.

hen Lexus calls you and invites you to drive their most popular models, you pack your luggage and head out. No questions asked. The destination this time? Sunny California. Except it wasn’t sunny. When we arrived it was pouring with rain, occasionally stopping from time to time and actually allowing us to take pictures and look around a bit. As gorgeous and breathtaking as California is, we’ve been here before, and the real spotlight was put on the cars this time around. You see, when Lexus invited us for a test drive of their latest GS and RX models, they also mentioned it would be the flagship 450h editions. That’s right, we got to drive two of their finest hybrid models, and the less than ideal weather actually turned out to work in our favor. Beverly Hills, Sunset Strip and the Hollywood hills gave us an ideal chance to test out all of the car’s characteristics. Lexus has been traditionally looked at as a ‘senior’ car manufacturer, appealing to the older gentlemen. In recent years however, the trend has started to change. Just look at Lexus’ current design language for instance. It’s about as aggressive and mean as a luxury car can get without losing its meaning. The newest GS and RX appeal to people in their 20s and 30s more than anyone else, with a lot of the older generations moving into the German brands.
106 ISSUE 7 / maqinaonline.com
THE GS IS NOT A SPORTS CAR BUT IT WILL TACKLE THE BENDS IF YOU REALLY ASK OF IT TO Let’s start off with the GS. Hybrid cars are typically divided into two categories: those that were designed to be hybrids from the start and those which were adapted into hybrids from conventional cars. Although the GS didn’t start life off as a pure hybrid vehicle, it’s managed to avoid the usual pitfalls associated with hybrids. It’s a large car and you notice that straight away, but the proportions are great. It looks good whether it’s just sitting at a car park or rolling down the highway. The front end is perhaps a bit too cluttered up with lots of shapes and angles, but it still looks good. The side profile has been carried over from last year but the rear fascia was slightly updated. It looks more modern and interesting, closely mimicking the front.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 7 107
Whereas the GS looks somewhat confusing from certain angles, the RX is drop-dead gorgeous. We’re not exaggerating when we say we’ve never seen an SUV of any caliber looking this amazing. The front fascia boasts a mesh grille (rather than the horizontal slats in the GS), sharp, stretched-back headlights and L-shaped foglights. It’s aggressive and purposeful, without compromising elegance and continuity. Sharp lines and large crests are a theme which often recurs throughout the RX’s body panels. Our favorite side-profile design element is the black trim piece just behind the rear window giving off a coupe-SUV illusion. It stops the rear end from becoming too bland by separating the large slab of metal between the side windows and rear windshield. The rear fascia gets ‘angry-looking’ taillights which have their own little eyebrows created by the downward sloping line coming from the waistline. A top spoiler makes the entire car feel more sporty, with the dual exhaust pods (one on each side) finishing up the design. We really, really like it. Inside they’re both really similar. The GS’ dashboard design is simple yet elegant, with a large 12.3-inh touchscreen and a 12-speaker sound system. The center console follows the function over form philosophy, with ergonomically arranged buttons and knobs. The steering wheel is nice to hold and the flappy paddles behind it are enjoyable. It’s definitely not the best-looking interior Lexus has done, but it is very luxurious. As good as the GS’ cabin is however, it’s dwarfed in comparison to the RX. For starters, the dashboard blends into the center console with a really unique L-shaped design. The same 12.3-inch touchscreen sits atop the dash rather than inside it, giving you more visibility all around. The steering wheel is the same, but the commanding driving position makes it feel slightly different. It uses the same gear shifter in the middle, but the surrounding area is a lot better.

LEXUS HYBRID
The GS and the ES are both luxury leaders in their respective segments. Peek under the hood of the GS and you find a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a hybridized CVT sending power to the rear wheels. Total output with the electric motor stands at 338 horsepower, although it’s the low-end torque which really surprises. Lexus claims this is the fastest GS you can buy, and we have no reason to doubt them. The sprint to 100 km/h takes just 6 seconds, but it feels a lot faster than that in real life. Put your foot down and it just picks up. No delay, no lag. For such a large luxury limo, it definitely goes well. It stops amazingly too, needing just 122 feet to come to a rest from 100 km/h. It’s not a sports car but it will tackle the bends if you really ask of it to. We didn’t expect a lot of feedback but it amazingly delivered. The RX 450h uses the same 3.5-liter V6 but here it’s coupled to a pair of front-mounted electric motors/generators. Power stands at 308 horsepower and 335 Nm of torque. Being an SUV, it’s somewhat slower than the GS, managing to reach 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds.
“
Once you’re behind the wheel however, it feels just as fast because of the higher driving position. We expected it to be worse in the handling department as well, but that was far from the truth. It was actually nippier and more agile, providing a lot more feedback. Whether that’s down to the shorter wheelbase or the square stance we don’t know, but it feels amazing to throw around. Body roll is kept at a minimum, and the F-Sport suspension comes with a selectable Sport mode too. We left California wishing we got to drive the cars more. Given the amount of sports cars and super cars we’re lucky to drive, most ‘mainstream’ cars don’t impress us that much these days. The newest Lexus hybrid models are one of the rare vehicles which do however. The fact that they’re so blatantly good in every situation makes them interesting and exciting. As an overall package, they’re extremely hard to beat.

The top fairing hides a highly refined instrument cluster with a monochromatic, dot matrix display with a wealth of information, also including the fuel level and engaged gear indicator, clock, average and instantaneous fuel consumption and air temperature indicator. The MGX-21 dashboard also provides a complete entertainment system that includes the stereo system, equipped with an AM/FM radio with a 25W per channel amplifier connected to a pair of loudspeakers and it manages the intercom system. Also contributing to achieving this goal is the brand new (and patented) manoeuvring assistance system that reduces the tendency (connected to the size of the front wheel) of the steering to “close” in low speed and high steering angle manoeuvres, counterbalancing the weight of the steering, thanks to a system of regressive springs and particular kinematics. All this verve is controlled by a benchmark braking system for the category worthy of a sports motorcycle, comprising a trio of large diameter discs and four-piston front callipers and radial connection that is painted red to highlight the MGX21’s exhibitionist personality.
