GENESIS GV80 CONCEPT LUXURIOUS, FORWARD-THINKING AND HIGH-TECH

T

he new Genesis luxury auto brand has enticed car enthusiasts with several impressive vehicles from the onset. The flagship G90 sedan, G80 and G80 Sport and the upcoming dynamic reardrive G70 sedan have made impressive strides in earning loyal customers and a growing international following. But what lies ahead for the Genesis brand? Glimpses of this vision can be seen through the concept cars unveiled by Genesis in recent months. The GV80 Concept, showcased at the New York Motor Show this year, is the brand’s first interpretation of a versatile luxury SUV. The concept is a midsize, rear-wheel-drive crossover with a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell powertrain to run on electricity.

10 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

It is more than just an aesthetic exercise for the brand, however. It foreshadows the Genesis move into the SUV market, revealing the naming pattern Genesis will use for the SUVs in its lineup and offering a sleek new take on design features, including headlights and side mirrors. The GV80 is not just an elegant vehicle, however. The visual identify of the GV80 was very much influenced by the brand’s fuel cell technology, which dictated the concept’s clean, simple, sculpted and lightweight look. Recognizing the brand’s global impact, Genesis seeks to push the world forward in implementing clean tech in a variety of ways. Genesis will continue to study the benefits of similar alternative propulsion systems and eco-friendly technologies for future product applications.

NEWS

“The GV80 Concept is a SUV that alludes to the confidence and evolution of the Genesis brand – its design is timeless, with an understated yet dynamic overall surface complexity,” said Head of Genesis Design, Luc Donckerwolke. To complement the refined exterior, the GV80 Concept’s beautifully crafted interior environment showcases a curated combination of highquality materials, vibrant colors and rich textures that lend themselves to timeless sophistication. The interior features an innovative Human Machine Interface that offers users intuitive operation and function control through the use of a new multi-function interactive controller with capacitive touch. All of this technology is seamlessly blended into the precision designed details of the vehicle. The horizontal 22-inch curved OLED infinity display presents two distinct zones, providing separate driver and passenger experiences. The top of the interactive multi-function controller features a concave gorilla glass touchpad and knurled metal wheel with handwriting recognition as a unique method for interacting with the informational panel. The Genesis brand is looking to unveil six vehicles including sedans, SUVs, and a coupe on three new dedicated platforms by 2021. And, although branded a concept vehicle, the GV80 is not too far from a production version that will be coming in the next two years. In Qatar, the newest luxury of the auto market is available at the Skyline Automotive showroom on B-Ring Road, the official distributor of Genesis in the country.

NEW JAGUAR E-PACE ROLLS INTO THE RECORD BOOKS

12 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

T

he new Jaguar E-PACE has set an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title during its world premiere. The compact performance SUV leap into the record books with a 15.3 metre-long jump complete with a 270-degree corkscrew-like ‘barrel roll’. Demonstrating the agility, precision and performance of Jaguar’s newest SUV, the feat was the final test for E-PACE after 25 gruelling months of work across four continents to ensure extreme durability and that it lived up to Jaguar’s Art of Performance philosophy. The Jaguar E-PACE is a five-seat, compact SUV that packs the design and performance of a Jaguar sports car into a spacious, practical and connected all-wheel-drive vehicle. Trademark Jaguar driving dynamics and design put the brand’s sports car DNA in a practical design packed with advanced

technologies to keep you connected. The E-PACE is the newest member of Jaguar’s SUV family, joining the groundbreaking all-electric I-PACE Concept and the 2017 World Car of the Year, the Jaguar F-PACE – itself launched with a spectacular GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ setting loopthe-loop in 2015. The exterior design is inspired by the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car and characterised by the distinctive Jaguar grille, muscular proportions, short overhangs and powerful haunches that give the E-PACE a bold and purposeful stance, instantly communicating dynamic agility. Jaguar sports car DNA is also evident in the fast sweep of the roofline and the distinctive side window graphic. Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar, said: “Established Jaguar design principles ensure the E-PACE is immediately recognisable as the sports car of its class. Our new compact SUV combines the interior space, connectivity and security that families expect

with the kind of proportions, purity of design and performance not usually associated with such a practical vehicle.” The E-PACE completed its world record jump at ExCeL in London – one of only a handful of venues in the UK big enough to accommodate the 160-metre run-up and run-off vital for the 15-metre leap. Behind the wheel was stunt driver Terry Grant, who has completed stunts on many film sets and holds an impressive 21 GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ titles. Terry Grant, Stunt Driver, said: “As far as I am aware no production car has ever cleanly completed a bona-fide barrel roll and therefore it has always been an ambition of mine to perform one ever since I was a boy. After driving the Jaguar F-PACE in the record-breaking loop-the-loop, it has been amazing to help launch the next chapter of the PACE family in an even more dramatic dynamic feat.”

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 13

NEWS

Unsurprisingly, the barrel roll is not one to be tried at home; months of testing and analysis were completed to fine-tune the stunt, including achieving precisely the correct speed of run-up. The ramps were modelled extensively using CAD before any jumps took place. Terry experienced a G-Force of 5.5 during the 270 degree twist, and required a 160-metre run up to hit the air at the correct speed. Guinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel said: “This amazing feat really was a sight to behold. While I’ve seen the barrel roll stunt in film, witnessing this incredible feat in real life was something pretty special. Congratulations to Terry and Jaguar for setting another epic Guinness World Records title.

The reveal of the E-PACE was followed by a spectacular musical performance by Pete Tong & The Heritage Orchestra who presented the now legendary Ibiza Classics. As a celebration of the new Jaguar E-PACE, Pete collaborated with singer-songwriter Raye to perform “You Don’t Know Me” by Jax Jones - a hit that features Raye that has over 230 million plays on Spotify and over 130 million YouTube views. Pete Tong said: “I’ve been working with the Heritage Orchestra for the past couple of years but this is the first time I’ve been involved in something like this, it’s very exciting and I’m glad to be a part of it! Jaguar breaking the Guinness World Record for the barrel roll was mind-blowing. This creative approach to revealing the new Jaguar E-PACE was the inspiration behind the collaboration between myself and Raye and we are now planning to put the track on my new album.” E-PACE: Connected, Intelligent, Agile, Responsive The Jaguar E-PACE is connected and intelligent. The 10-inch touchscreen comes as standard

Digital connectivity can be found throughout the cabin, ready for every need of the modern family. There are up to four 12-volt charging points and five USB connections as well as a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. The E-PACE has exceptional interior space for its class. The compact SUV can seat five in absolute comfort with generous rear legroom. The large luggage space is made possible by the vehicle’s sophisticated Integral Link rear suspension architecture and can fit a pushchair, a set of golf clubs and a large suitcase. and connects customers to their favourite apps, including Spotify. Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl system allows you to keep the vehicle secure by tracking it on your smartphone, automatically alerts the emergency services in case of an accident and allows you to check fuel levels and mileage remotely via a smartphone or smartwatch. Customers can warm up the car, cool it down and even start it remotely using InControl.

Advanced active safety features include a pedestrian airbag, which deploys from beneath the trailing edge of the bonnet in the event of a collision. The E-PACE is the first Jaguar to feature the company’s next-generation HeadUp Display technology. The advanced display can project up to 66 per cent more information onto the windscreen using large, full-colour graphics with enhanced clarity. Essential information including vehicle speed and navigation directions

are in full view at all times, with alerts and updates for the infotainment, safety and convenience features all projected directly into the driver’s eyeline – reducing the need to look away from the road. An optional 12.3-inch full colour digital instrument panel and choice of two premium audio systems developed with Meridian put the E-PACE on a par with vehicles from the class above when it comes to interior technology. The E-PACE is also available with Jaguar’s innovative wearable Activity Key. The waterproof and shockproof wristband has an integrated transponder, allowing the driver

to lock the main key inside the vehicle when enjoying outdoor pursuits such as running or cycling. Whenever the Activity Key is activated, by holding the wristband up to the upper edge of the number plate surround on the tailgate, any conventional key fobs left inside the vehicle are disabled. The strong chassis also allows owners to tow up to 1,800kg (braked), ideal for customers who use their E-PACE for both business and pleasure.

911 GT3 with Touring Package celebrates its world premiere at the IAA

20 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

New addition to the Porsche range of puristic driving cars: The 911 GT3 with Touring Package will be unveiled at the 67th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, which takes place from September 12 to 24 2017. It is available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, and instead of the fixed rear wing it has a variable rear spoiler like the 911 Carrera.

Other distinguishing features include the silver trim detailing on the side windows, sports exhaust tailpipes and headlight washer covers, as well as the Porsche logo at the rear. Customers can also opt for the “Black Exterior Touring Package”, offering the before mentioned elements in black including front and rear lights finished in a dark tint.

The name “Touring Package” harks back to a model variant of the classic 911 Carrera RS from 1973. Even then, the puristic 911 design language and classic interior features were a key element. The new 911 GT3 with Touring Package adopts and modernises this concept. This variant is aimed at enthusiasts of high-quality sports cars who value an understated appearance and pure driving dynamics.

The interior embodies the feel of a classic sports car. In line with the character of a puristic GT, premium leather is used throughout the cabin, including the steering wheel trim with twelve o’clock marker, shift lever, door panel armrests, centre console storage compartment lid and door handles complimented by black stitching detail. The seat centre panels are made of luxury black fabric, with the Porsche crest embossed on the headrests. The finishing trim details in the interior are done in brushed aluminium in black.

Beneath its understated exterior is pure motorsport technology: The four-litre naturally aspirated engine, taken from motorsport, reaches 500 hp (368 kW) and generates 460 Nm of torque. In combination with optimal gear changes, the 911 GT3 with Touring Package sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds reaching a top speed of 316 km/h. With the exception of the rear, the body of the GT3 remains unchanged in this variant. Although front and rear lights are identical, they are not dark-tinted as is the case in the 911 GT3. The subtle structural features are first visible at the rear end. The wing of the extending rear spoiler from the series-production 911 is equipped with an aerodynamic downforce edge (Gurney flap) in the vehicle body colour. The exclusively designed rear lid bears the “GT3 touring” logo.

Excluding the Clubsport Package and Alcantara equipment ranges, the majority of 911 GT3 options are available from Porsche in combination with the Touring Package. As with the regular 911 GT3, the standard equipment includes Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the Connect Plus module and the Porsche Track Precision app, enabling drivers to display, record, review and analyse detailed driving data on their smartphone. The new 911 GT3 with Touring Package is available to order now with a basic retail price of QAR 536,500, identical to the standard 911 GT3.

NEWS

The Aventador S Roadster is presented by Automobili Lamborghini at the IAA in Frankfurt, combining the technologies and driving dynamics of the Aventador S with an emotive open air driving experience. “The new Aventador S Roadster sets new benchmarks in technology and performance on both road and track, with the roadster version adding a new dimension in driving enjoyment,” says Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali. “The Aventador S Roadster offers the thrill of open air driving without compromising on driving dynamics or the occupants’ comfort, and adds a further luxurious dimension through the personalization options available.”

Sleek, removable, hardtop roof panels, weighing less than six kg, are convexly molded to ensure maximum cabin space for the occupants. Finished in matt black carbon fiber, optional specifications including high gloss black, shiny visible carbon fiber, and further Ad Personam possibilities. An easy fastening system allows the roof panels to be quickly removed and stored in the front trunk. The rear window is electrically operated at the push of a button for drivers wanting to hear the beat of the V12 powerplant: while closed during roofless driving, the window minimizes cabin noise and airflow. Color and trim, inside and out

The Aventador S Roadster is the only mid-rear engine V12 super sports roadster. Alongside class-leading performance figures, the roadster’s unique status is enhanced by multiple color and trim options, including new materials and extensive use of carbon fiber as well as virtually limitless potential through Lamborghini’s Ad Personam personalization program.

Complementing external colors, five interior configurations are offered, featuring leather and Alcantara in single and bi-color combinations and various stitching and trim choices. Further external and internal packages such as ‘branding’ and ‘carbon fiber’ are offered, with the Ad Personam program for clients wanting to customize their Aventador S Roadster even further.

Air and space - the aerodynamic roadster design The roadster maintains the unmistakable design of the Aventador S along with unique features reflecting its roadster persona: a combination of distinctive Lamborghini design DNA and the result of extensive aerodynamic testing. The car’s rear sports distinctively different lines to the coupé, giving the roadster its own aerodynamic character. An engine bridge runs from the back window to the rear in a mix of body color and matt black painted carbon fiber engine bonnet blades: a transparent option is also available to show off the V12 engine within. 24 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

Clients can also select the internal specification of the roof panels: covered in black Alcantara framed by matt black carbon as standard, an optional Carbon Skin package (Lamborghini’s high tech fabric that is even lighter than Alcantara) can cover the interior roof panels as well as around the cockpit and parts of the cabin. The Aventador S Roadster is launched in the Ad Personam Color Blu Aegir, inspired by the peaceful turquoise ocean hiding an indomitable force beneath: sophisticated yet powerful, with extensive use of carbon fiber.

NEWS

The wing mirrors and windscreen frame are finished in high gloss carbon fiber while the lower part of the car including front and rear bumper, side skirts, air intakes and outlets are in visible carbon fiber.

drive’s calibration allows for the stabilizing effect of the new rear-wheel steering, allowing more torque to the rear axle: when powering off, less torque is shifted to the front axle to allow a sporty but safe drive.

The configuration internally demonstrates the potential of the Ad Personam program, using Blu Delphinus leather contrasted with Bianco Polar, with Blu Delphinus S-trim stripes on seats, doors and dashboard and even the floor mats in blue and white.

The active rear wing optimizes the car’s aerodynamic balance depending on speed and the selected drive mode, and its significantly enhanced overall aerodynamic design improves front downforce by more than 130% over the previous Aventador. With the wing in optimum position the roadster achieves over 50% overall efficiency at high downforce and in low drag more than 400%.

Aventador S Roadster - design and technologies The Aventador Roadster’s ‘S’ suffix denotes the design and technology advancements of the new model. The Roadster adopts the four-wheel drive, new active suspension, new four-wheel steering system, and the new EGO driving mode introduced on the Aventador S coupé, and with the redevelopment of every aspect of suspension and electronic control systems, its ‘total control concept’ assures superior drive, ride and performance.

The Aventador S Roadster’s four driving modes allows selection of STRADA, SPORT and CORSA and the new EGO mode, each influencing every aspect of the car’s behavior through management of traction, steering and suspension. EGO allows the driver to set up his preferred criteria in each mode to suit his driving style.

Enhanced lateral control from the new four-wheel steering provides improved agility at low speed and more stability at high speed, combined with Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) for responsive feedback and sharper turn-in. Improved vertical control comes from updated pushrod suspension, new rear springs and Lamborghini Magneto-rheological Suspension (LMS) with revised kinematics adapted to the new four-wheel steering. A new real-time variable damping system optimizes wheel and body control and balance and ground stiffness is maximized.

Accelerating 0-100km/h in just 3.0 seconds, with a top speed equal to the Aventador S coupé of 350 km/h, the Aventador S Roadster weighs just 50 kg more than the coupé. Its 6.5 liter V12 engine outputs the same 740 hp as the coupé, with 690 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. The seven-speed lightweight Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) transmission provides robotized gearshifts in up to 50 milliseconds, with carbon ceramic brakes as standard. Dione 20”/21” rims are fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires especially developed for the Aventador S. Inside, the TFT digital dashboard can be customized to the driver’s preferences and Apple CarPlay™ is standard.

A optimized ESC system improves longitudinal control for faster and more precise management of traction control and vehicle dynamics depending on driving mode selected, maximizing grip in all conditions and enhancing handling. The permanent four-wheel maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 25

THE NEW BMW M5 The new BMW M5 takes BMW M GmbH into new territory, with M xDrive all-wheel drive featuring in the high-performance sedan for the first time. This change of tack sees the M5 exploring new dynamic dimensions and offering greater everyday practicality in all driving conditions. The new car is committed to building on the tradition of a concept – the luxurious four-door business sedan with a taste for the race track – first glimpsed in 1984 with the original BMW M5. The new M xDrive developed by BMW M GmbH is the most emotionally engaging all-wheel-drive system yet to grace the highperformance segment. It works with a central transfer case with multi-plate clutch and distributes drive fully variably between the front and rear axle, as required. Another ingredient in the car’s supreme traction in all road and weather conditions is the Active M Differential at the rear axle, which also works fully variably and has a locking effect between 0 and 100 per cent. The character of M xDrive can be adjusted as desired. The driver has five different configurations to choose from based on combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). In the basic setting with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) activated and 4WD, the system permits slight slip through the rear wheels when accelerating out 28 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

of corners – and therefore plays its part in giving the new BMW M5 its sporting agility. In M Dynamic mode (MDM, 4WD Sport) M xDrive allows easily controlled drifts. The three M xDrive modes with DSC switched off have been conceived to sate the appetites of keen drivers and primarily for use on the track. Here, the driver can choose from three configurations up to and including pure rear-wheel drive (2WD). This mode allows the driver to pick their own drift angle and treats connoisseurs to driving dynamics in their purest form. Providing ample power for the new BMW M5 is a 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The M engineers have carried out significant revisions to the outgoing model’s power unit. For example, newly developed turbochargers, ultra-efficient indirect charge air cooling and increased fuel injection pressure together help to raise output and, above all, torque. The engine develops 441 kW/600 hp at 5,600 – 6,700 rpm, while a monumental 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque is placed at the driver’s disposal from as low down as 1,800 rpm and remains there until 5,600 rpm. A map-controlled, fully variable oil pump ensures oil is supplied as and when the new BMW M5 needs it, even on the track.

The car’s impressive performance figures speak for themselves: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds (124 mph). Top speed, meanwhile, is an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph), but the optional M Driver’s Package can keep the fun coming to 305 km/h (189 mph). The new BMW M5 channels all that power through a specially tuned eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. In D mode it provides all the comfort and convenience of fully automatic gear changes, but can then also switch to sequential manual shifts. The driver can do this using either the compact selector lever on the centre console or the steering wheelmounted paddles. Drivelogic allows the driver to adjust the transmission’s characteristics to their personal preferences. For track use, the eight-speed M Steptronic unit serves up lightningfast shift times, helping to give the new BMW M5 its exceptional agility and dynamic flair. The suspension of the new BMW M5 is likewise designed to deliver both maximum traction for everyday use and supreme dynamic performance on the track. Like the engine, transmission and M xDrive system, it has been tuned by experts and racing drivers at venues including the world’s most exacting test facility – the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. Sophisticated stiffening elements in the front and rear structures ensure the body structure is extremely rigid and therefore that the car provides 30 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

instantaneous feedback, in particular when the driver is pushing hard on the road or track. The driver can also choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes for the Variable Damper Control (VDC) system – which has M-specific tuning – and the M Servotronic steering. And the engine’s characteristics can also be configured to the driver’s tastes via the Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus modes. The two M1 and M2 buttons on the M leather steering wheel can be used to store two set-ups combining the driver’s preference of engine, transmission, suspension and M xDrive modes, the DSC mode and Head-Up-Display settings. The driver can then activate their preferred set-up by pressing the relevant button. The new BMW M5 includes revisions to its bodywork over the regular BMW 5 Series to satisfy its challenging dynamic brief. The M engineers have redesigned the broader front side panels and front bumper trim to include larger apertures for the air feeding the cooling systems and brakes. Also new is the rear diffuser. The exhaust system’s quartet of tailpipes are a visual pointer to the power generated by the BMW M5 and also lay on a suitably sporting soundtrack for the job in hand, courtesy of their flap control system. The driver can use a button to adjust the engine sound as desired.

NEWS

The bonnet, which also has an M-specific design, is made from aluminium and boasts eye-catching sculpture lines. These extend into the extremely lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof – a standard feature of the new M5. The weight savings contributed by the CFRP roof and other components such as the exhaust system help to ensure the new BMW M5 with M xDrive allwheel drive is lighter than its predecessor. The new BMW M5 is fitted as standard with M compound brakes, which are lighter than conventional grey cast iron items and therefore also bring down the car’s weight. With blue-painted sixpiston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear, plus perforated, inner-vented brake discs all round, the M compound brakes have the speed-shedding power to befit the car’s dynamic potency. The optional M carbon ceramic brakes, which can be identified by callipers painted in a gold colour and shave another 23 kilograms off the M5’s weight, can withstand even greater punishment. The new BMW M5 comes as standard with polished 19-inch lightalloy wheels (front: 9.5 x 19, rear: 10.5 x 19) in Orbit Grey and M-specific tyres (front: 275/40 R 19, rear: 285/40 R 19). 20-inch items can be specified as an option (front: 275/35 R 20 tyres on 9.5 x 20 rims, rear: 285/35 R 20 tyres on 10.5 x 20 rims). Standard specification for the new BMW M5 also features Merino leather and M seats with electric adjustment. The options list includes newly developed M multifunction seats, which stand out with their bucketseat-style construction and even better lateral support. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 31

LEXUS LC 500 TAKES THREE-IN-A-ROW 2017 SUPER GT500 VICTORY Having dominated the first two rounds of the 2017 AUTOBACS SUPER GT500 series in Okayama and Fuji Speedway, the new Lexus LC 500 displayed its prowess once again at the Autopolis racing circuit to make it three wins in a row. This time, it was the turn of the #36 au TOM’S LC 500 driven by Kazuki Nakajima and James Rossiter to keep the Lexus flag flying as they raced to victory in the third round of the championship. In a race held under clear bright skies and fought over a challenging 300-km distance, the au TOM’S LC 500 battled its way from seventh on the grid to the top step of the podium to continue Lexus’ scintillating start to the season and consolidate the team’s position on top of the manufacturer’s standings. “This has been another excellent performance from the team, and I congratulate au TOM’S LC 500 for maintaining Lexus’ dominance in the 2017 season,” said Takayuki Yoshitsugu, Chief Representative, Middle East and North Africa Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation. “Participating in motorsports events allows us to gather a variety of data which in turn help us while developing production vehicles. The level of support we received from our fans has been one of the highlights of our 2017 activities so far, and I express my gratitude to them for their constant encouragement of our motorsports initiatives.” The SUPER GT qualifying employs a unique two-stage knockout format, meaning both drivers of each team must be quick enough to get into higher position.

34 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

Everyone makes a desperate attempt to clock the fastest lap in qualifying within the given time limit to get a better position at the actual race, making it a breathtaking battle well worth watching. Besides, since races tend to get boring if a single car dominates the season, weight handicaps (success ballast), which are calculated according to accumulated points the drivers have acquired in all previous races, are assigned to the cars in the next race. Heavier cars have poorer acceleration and braking, meaning the championship battle is expected to go down to the wire. That looked to be a real disadvantage initially, since Lexus teams dominated the previous two rounds and this meant the LC 500 cars had to carry extra weight into the race. Despite the weight handicap, five of the six Lexus LC 500s made it through to the second stage of qualifying. As the race started, the pole-starting competitor car secured the fastest lap of the entire race on lap two and generated a runaway lead of over six seconds by lap four. However, a major incident on lap five took two cars out of contention and immediately deleted any advantages during the safety car’s deployment. Following the restart on lap 14, the frontrunners found themselves caught up with back markers in the GT300 class (SUPER GT is a mixed-class racing competition combining GT500 and GT300 classes, with the two classes of different levels of performance racing together to make the event all the more exciting for fans).

NEWS

This momentary hold-up allowed Heikki Kovalainen to join the chase in the #1 LC 500, eventually pushing into second place by the halfway point. By lap 30 the teams began to make routine driver changes. In a calculated move, the #1 LC 500 entered the pits at the same time as the lead car, but managed to emerge in front as the DENSO KOBELCO SARD team pulled off a lightning fast pit stop. During this period, the #36 LC 500 of James Rossiter pushed incredibly hard and took the lead until lap 35, creating valuable headway that allowed fellow driver Kazuki Nakajima to leapfrog into the overall lead after their own super-speedy pit stop, ahead of the #1 LC 500. With the #36 and #1 LC 500s now in first and second position and gaining distance on the rest of the pack, a six-car scrap ensued for third place. However, the two lead cars had their own battle, an intense rivalry that ended in an unavoidable collision on lap 51. The #1 car spun off and was unfortunately hit from behind by a GT300 car as it tried to return to the track, forcing both cars out of contention. Now unchallenged, Nakajima led his #36 car to the chequered flag with an outstanding lead of 26 seconds – team au TOM’S first win of the 2017 season and the third consecutive victory for the Lexus LC 500. “After the qualifying, I was starting to lose my confidence, so I decided to race calmly,” Kazuki Nakajima said. “But, James did a magnificent job at the wheel and got us to where we could take the lead. That was more than I ever expected. I had a bad time getting through the traffic (of back markers) and it allowed the No. 1 car to catch up with me. There was nothing I could do about the ensuing collision and that was unfortunate. There was some damage to my machine, but fortunately I was somehow able to get to the finish first.” James Rossiter said, “It was truly a day full of action. At first, I was running behind the two lead cars and that was the toughest part. But after the safety car came out, I thought that the real race would be from that point on, so I pushed hard. I kept running in full-attack mode, and I really enjoyed it. We got the win, so I am satisfied.”

THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE BLACK BADGE STORY DAWNS AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

“Black Badge is for those driven by the same restless spirit that propelled company forefather C.S Rolls’ exploration of the limitations of powered land and air travel. It is an alter-ego for our marque that captivates the disrupters, the innovators and those that accept no limitations. Standing as a truly Bespoke response to the desires of a new breed of entrepreneur, Black Badge has already distinctly amplified the characters’ of Ghost and Wraith motor cars, placing them into consciousness of those that seek a commanding presence in the objects they commission. Overwhelming demand from new patrons of luxury tells us the time is now right to apply this assertive, confident and powerful attitude to Dawn and open this truly transformative presence to the world.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

A

t the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, Rolls-Royce presented a truly transformative moment on the luxury landscape – the introduction of a permanent Bespoke family of motor cars called Black Badge, designed in response to the differing lifestyle requirements of a younger, more dynamic patron of luxury.

The Black Badge story Since it was launched in 2016, Black Badge has become the most commanding presence on the super-luxury landscape. Its authentic Bespoke engineering and design approach has answered the demands of those customers who have said “Build us a Rolls-Royce like no other”.

Since its introduction, Black Badge has done much to attract a new generation of Rolls-Royce customers to the marque. As a result of overwhelmingly positive customer demand for Ghost Black Badge and Wraith Black Badge, the time is now right to add a new chapter to the Black Badge story.

Black Badge is Rolls-Royce’s response to a small and select group of clients who have asked the marque for motor cars with specific, focused characteristics that reflect their different take on life, success and the luxury they consume. These people choose to define themselves differently from their wider social group; a subset within a subset.

The 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed will celebrate machines so beyond measurable limitations, they have changed the landscape in which they operate – an entirely fitting stage on which the third chapter in this truly transformative story can unfurl – the global debut of Dawn Black Badge, the most uncompromising expression of open-top luxury in the world.

44 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

For over a century such individuals, possessed of a dark and restless spirit, have been drawn to Rolls-Royce’s unique allure. Luminaries including Sir Malcolm Campbell, Howard Hughes and Muhammed Ali have all shared the marque’s founding philosophy; an uncompromising refusal to accept the status quo and a constant yearn to innovate, create and advance.

NEWS

Their restless spirit was also shared by the marque’s co-founder; himself one of the great disrupters of his day. The Honourable C.S. Rolls was a man in a hurry. Not satisfied with fundamentally altering the road-car landscape, he sought more and pursued his appetite for advancement and adventure in the air; a passion that would ultimately lead to his untimely demise aged just 33. It is this indomitable spirit that, since the launch of Black Badge, has captivated so many of today’s young owners, who are drawn to RollsRoyce in the knowledge that no other luxury house is possessed of the vision and flexibility to meet their demands both in design and engineering terms. Indeed, Black Badge serves to amplify the inherent characteristics that have driven so many new, younger patrons of luxury to the marque. In conceiving Black Badge versions of Wraith, Ghost and now Dawn, the marque’s Bespoke designers and engineers drew upon their instinctive understanding of the unique lives of these extraordinary men and women to create both design and engineering treatments that perfectly amplify the inherent values of these great Rolls-Royces.

NEWS

Dawn Black Badge Created to satisfy overwhelming demand from a new breed of RollsRoyce patrons, Dawn Black Badge stands as the most luxurious, social and sensual space from which to take in the night air. This most glamorous, uncompromising expression of open-top luxury is given a new and darker sensual dimension through its suite of Black Badge engineering and design treatments. The Dawn Black Badge at the Festival of Speed is presented in a deeply intense shade of black. Multiple layers of paint and lacquer have been fastidiously applied and hand-polished in a process that amounts to the most exhaustive painting and polishing process ever used for a solid paint colour. The result clothes Dawn’s sensuous lines in the deepest, darkest and most intense black to ever grace a production car surface. The roof, which opens in a ‘Silent Ballet’ to allow in the sounds of the night, is also only available in black canvas, whilst the rear deck is finished in black leather. In creating Black Badge, Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke designers have sought to create true signifiers of this more assertive alter-ego for the marque. Dawn gets this same treatment. The Spirit of Ecstasy – itself a mascot that has taken many different forms throughout the marque’s history – transforms into a high-gloss vamp, finished in a perfectly executed black chrome. This transformation to a darker aesthetic extends to certain chrome surfaces including the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, exhaust pipes and air inlet finisher. The effect is an authentic transformation that speaks of a bolder, more confident sensibility. Finally, the ‘Double R’ signifiers on the Rolls-Royce badges are inverted in colour, confirming the creation of a true alter-ego of the marque.

46 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

This bold, edgy design ethos extends beautifully into the interior – an exquisitely appointed staging point for patrons who seek to discover the night’s elements with the roof down. Evoking Sir Henry Royce’s founding philosophy to ‘design what does not exist’ – a collaboration between the marque’s design and engineering departments has seen the creation of a new luxury material. Inspired by Rolls-Royce’s aviation heritage and echoing advanced production techniques for stealth aircraft, a beautiful and highly innovative new treatment for the car’s surfaces has been conceived. Its construction displays every hallmark of Rolls-Royce’s fastidious attention to detail. Threads of aircraft grade aluminium, a delicate 0.014m in diameter, are woven together and then bonded in carbon fibre. Surfaces are then finished with six coats of lacquer before being left to cure for 72 hours and hand-polished to Rolls-Royce’s hallmark mirror finish. The result is a highly contemporary finish, perfectly attuned to the darker more menacing aesthetic today’s patrons of luxury demand. This exquisite expression of noir informs every conceivable detail. For example, innovative production techniques such as Physical Vapour Deposition, a highly technical surfacing method, perfectly darkens the air-vents throughout the interior in a manner that will never discolour or tarnish. Reflecting the marque’s Bespoke philosophy, Dawn Black Badge also plays host to a new interior palette break-up. Higher levels of exquisite Black leather are accented boldly with Mandarin highlights, including a strip of orange highlight which encircles the cabin at hipheight, evocative of the sunset before the passengers are immersed in darkness.

NEWS

A final touch, again, in a nod to one of Rolls-Royce’s great pioneer patrons, Sir Malcolm Campbell, finishes the rear interior space. His famous ‘Infinity’ rating logo beautifully embroidered into the car’s rear waterfall, gives a subtle nod to a man very much possessed of the restless spirit that so defines the Black Badge attitude. Truly Bespoke Engineering Like its stablemates Ghost and Wraith, the distilled essence of Dawn is amplified through the engineering that underpins the Black Badge philosophy. In the case of Dawn, the engineering substance that leads to more spirited driving is accentuated by the creation of an entirely new exhaust system, that when deployed by the press of the ‘low’ button, celebrates Rolls-Royce’s hallmark V12 engine with a menacing bass baritone, announcing its arrival with authority rather than hysteria. The exhaust tone adds an aural dimension to a suite of engineering enhancements. Indeed, Black Badge stands as a truly Bespoke collaboration between design and engineering, answering the demands of a new breed of patron of luxury who seeks a more spirited, involving driving experience which retains the peerless quality of ride that has driven Dawn’s success. To achieve this, the engineers have exploited the flexibility of Dawn’s magnificent 6.6 litre twin-turbo V12 to generate an extra 30bhp over the car’s already ample 563bhp, bringing the total to 593bhp. That hallmark sense of one infinite gear is also given bolder expression with the addition of a further 20NM of torque available from 1,500rpm, bringing the total to 840NM.

Fundamental changes to the transmission and throttle strategy give Dawn an enhanced feeling of urgency without diminishing its position as the world’s most luxurious open-top tourer. Indeed, the drive-train, ZF 8-speed gear box and steering-rack are so intuitive that they work together to create a more spirited drive depending on throttle and steering input. The result is a perfectly stately Rolls-Royce touring experience at low speeds and a highly engaging drive when the driver seeks to ‘push on’. Fundamental changes to suspension settings and components also ensure an appropriate balance between Rolls-Royce comfort and driver focus, felt in flatter cornering at high speeds. The increased urgency of Dawn Black Badge has led to the development of new brakes with an increase in diameter of one inch. During deceleration, a fundamental remapping of the transmission strategy leads to downshifts a few rpm sooner under braking, offering engine braking when driving in a more spirited manner. The steering-rack has also been quickened and engineered for more feedback. Speed-dependent adjustments also embolden Black Badge drivers as they enjoy an added sense of security and feel derived from increased steering weight at high speeds. Dawn Black Badge is now available to commission.

THE NEW MERCEDESAMG GT C ROADSTER .. OPEN-TOP DRIVING PERFORMANCE.

50 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

M

ercedes-AMG is blowing even more fresh air into the AMG GT family. The sports car and performance brand from Affalterbach has launched two exciting roadster variants of the two-seater sports car into the region. Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the authorized general distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, is pleased to present this car in its Mercedes-Benz showroom on Salwa road. AMG GT C Roadster enhances the portfolio with a completely new model that, with an output of 410 kW (557 hp) and peak torque of 680 Nm, also makes it the most powerful. The active rear axle steering and the electronically controlled rear axle locking differential, in combination with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, ensures the AMG GT C Roadster delivers dynamic performance at the highest level.

Fully automatic: the weight-optimised fabric soft top Both Roadsters are transformed from coupÊs to opentop sports cars at the touch of a button and even on the go. The three-layered fabric roof with magnesium/steel/ aluminium support structure opens and closes in around 11 seconds, and can do this at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Additional rollover protection is provided by an integrated aluminium cross-member with rollover bars. Three colour options for the soft top - black, red and beige – are available to complement the 11 exterior and 10 interior colours for the models. New output level: the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine At the heart of the AMG GT C Roadster is a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine - Mercedes-AMG is introducing a further output level of the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo, thereby underlining the exclusive character of the new model. At 410 kW (557 hp), the peak output is 35 kW (47 hp) above that of

the AMG GT S and 20 kW (28 hp) below the Mercedes-AMG GT R. The maximum torque of 680 newton metres is available from 1900 to 5750 rpm, while a sprint from zero to 100 km/h is achieved in 3.7 seconds, and culminates in a top speed of 316 km/h. Also adapted: the dual-clutch transmission By modifying the hardware and software, the developers have also adapted the seven-speed dual clutch transmission in a transaxle arrangement at the rear axle to the new power level of the Mercedes AMG GT C Roadster. The first gear of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sport transmission has a higher ratio, while seventh gear and the final drive have a lower ratio. This makes for even more agile acceleration and exceptional responses to sudden accelerator movements. The transmission mode “RACE” is additionally available for the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster. This mode optimally adjusts the shift strategy of the dual clutch transmission to the needs of the racetrack – very fast shift speeds and highly emotive engine sound are included. By pressing the separate “M” button in the centre console, the driver can activate the manual transmission mode in any drive mode. Pure sound: the AMG performance exhaust system The AMG GT C Roadster is equipped with the AMG performance exhaust system as standard to obtain an even more emotive sound

experience. Two variably adjustable flaps modulate the exhaust note of the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadsters authentically and directly. The flaps open and close depending on the selected AMG DRIVE SELECT mode, although they can also be controlled individually using a separate button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. In the “Comfort” and “Sport” settings, the low frequency sound typical of a V8 is designed for comfort. In “Sport Plus” and “RACE” modes the sound composition is far more emotive. The variable AMG performance exhaust system is also available as an option for the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster. Even more agility: active rear axle steering from the AMG GT R As standard the new Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster responds even more sensitively thanks to the active rear axle steering that had its debut in the Mercedes-AMG GT R. The system offers an ideal combination of agility and stability handling characteristics that are normally in direct conflict. With the rear wheels turning in the opposite direction to the front wheels up to a speed of 100 km/h, the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster turns into corners with significantly higher agility, to deliver even more driving pleasure with less steering input required. Once the speed of the AMG GT C Roadster exceeds100 km/h, the system turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels. This noticeably improves handling stability. At the same time, the lateral force on the rear wheels builds up considerably faster when changing direction, which makes the response to steering inputs quicker.

NEWS

On board as standard: the rear-axle locking differential As standard, the AMG GT C Roadster is equipped with an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear axle (Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster: mechanical locking differential), which is integrated into the compact transmission housing. Its sensitive and rapid control elevates the physical handling limits to a new level. It not only further improves the grip of the driven wheels, but also increases the cornering speeds at the limit. High quality and exclusivity: the interior The interior design echoes the design lines of the exterior. The dashboard places strong emphasis on width, creating the impression of a powerful wing. The high beltlines, concave door panels, dynamically rising centre console and low seat position perfectly integrate the driver with the cockpit. The new, light-colored interior in macchiato beige Exclusive nappa STYLE leather is available for the first time, lending the open-top sports car even more individuality and exclusivity. Standard features include an Exclusive nappa leather interior for the GCC, and the AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather.

More lateral support and comfort: AMG performance seats The optionally available AMG performance seats provide even more lateral support with more heavily contoured backrest and seat cushion side bolsters. For the first time the AMG performance seat is also optionally available with the AIRSCARF neck level heating system, which makes open-air driving enjoyable even in low outside temperatures. Hot summer days are also factored into the design, with comfort ensured by seat climate control, which is also available exclusively for the AMG performance seat for the first time. The intensity of the acclimatization can also be set in three stages. Impressive sound in the interior: External Coupled Subwoofer The BurmesterÂŽ surround sound system and the BurmesterÂŽ high-end surround sound system ensure a superior musical experience. Both systems benefit from the innovative External Coupled Subwoofer (ECS). This new bass sound reproduction system with an extremely low bass range turns the open two-seater into a mobile concert stage. Instead of a subwoofer box of limited dimensions, ECS uses the entire interior as a bass box.

Introduction From the moment Sir Henry Royce introduced the Rolls-Royce Phantom in 1925 it was judged ‘The Best Car in the World’ by the cognoscenti. As a result it has conveyed some of the world’s most influential and powerful men and women to the most defining historical moments over the last 92 years.

A new benchmark will be set today as the New Phantom – the eighth generation of this great nameplate – arrives. Not satisfied with simply launching a motor car that is a wholly contemporary design interpretation of Phantom DNA and a technological tour de force, Rolls-Royce has revolutionised the luxury car industry itself by shifting away from the status quo of shared platforms to an entirely new luxury business model.

Every new Phantom that has subsequently appeared has successfully retained the title of ‘Best Car in the World’ as a result of Rolls-Royce’s tireless pursuit of perfection, visionary engineering, aesthetic acuity and deep understanding of what the world’s leading luxury item should be. Quite simply, Rolls-Royce has innovated for almost a century to set the benchmark and satisfy the most discerning luxury patrons.

As the next chapter in the Rolls-Royce story opens, the New Rolls-Royce Phantom points the way forward for the global luxury industry.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, Chairman of Rolls-Royce and Member of the Board of the BMW Group said, “The global introduction of a new Rolls-Royce is always a very special moment within the BMW Group. This particular

occasion is all the more special because we are introducing an allnew Phantom, the flagship of the Rolls-Royce brand and the world’s foremost luxury product. New Phantom is a powerful statement of design, engineering and Bespoke expertise and I am delighted with the response we have received from our many highly discerning customers worldwide. The BMW Group remains fully committed to the future of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and is proud of the many achievements made by the brand since its acquisition.” The Genesis of New Phantom Quite contrary to how other so-called luxury manufacturers are trying to realise economies of scale by sharing platforms with mass market manufacturers, Rolls-Royce concluded that the future of true luxury lies in true small-volume manufacture of a dedicated ‘Architecture of Luxury’. “This realisation was a moment of clarity about the destiny of RollsRoyce,” reflects Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of RollsRoyce Motor Cars. “Every one of our customers – each a connoisseur of luxury in the extreme – were asking for something more individual to them, not less. We were adamant that that was what they should have.” “Key to Rolls-Royce realising its vision of being the world’s leading luxury brand, today and in the future, is an architecture that spans the entire Rolls-Royce family,” comments Philip Koehn, Director of Engineering. “The Architecture of Luxury will carry every future RollsRoyce, not just the New Phantom. Project Cullinan and eventually the next Ghost, Wraith, Dawn will ride on this architecture, as well as future coachbuild projects.” “Phantom VII’s spaceframe architecture was a good starting point and inspiration, but we wanted to do much more,” adds Giles Taylor, Director of Design. “The Architecture of Luxury gives me the canvas to protect the lineage and brand integrity of Rolls-Royce without compromise.

Starting with New Phantom, I have the framework to create a future range of true Rolls-Royces. In essence, this is one big coachbuild project.” “Our approach has been to forge long-term relationships with smaller suppliers run by families that will focus on us, giving us much more attention and therefore results that live within a quality expectation far beyond any other automotive concern,” continues Koehn. “For a brand to operate in such a manner within a larger automotive group is unheard of and truly revolutionary.” What is the Architecture of Luxury? The Architecture of Luxury is an all-aluminium spaceframe architecture designed by Rolls-Royce engineers that will underpin every future RollsRoyce beginning with the New Phantom. As such, no future Rolls-Royce will be of monocoque construction as used by mass-manufacturers and some mass-luxury brands. It is a truly revolutionary approach for the motor industry, and one that is informed by Rolls-Royce’s standing as a luxury house in the business of cars. Whilst the majority of so-called luxury manufacturers are limited to sharing individual platforms in a specific sector with mass brands for say their SUV or GT offerings, thereby introducing unacceptable compromise, Rolls-Royce will be uncompromising in only using its own architecture across all its motor cars, whatever the sector. It has been designed and engineered from the ground up in such a way as to be scalable to the size and weight requirements of different future Rolls-Royce models, including those with different propulsion, traction and control systems, thus underpinning the long-term future product roadmap. Approximately 30 per cent more rigid than the spaceframe architecture on which sat Phantom VII, the new architecture is at the heart of how the next generation of Rolls-Royces delivers the Rolls-Royce experience

in terms of ride comfort, acoustic comfort, seat comfort, exterior presence and interior space. Engineering a Modern Masterpiece The New Phantom will be the first of a new generation of Rolls-Royces to benefit from the creation of the Architecture of Luxury. This new architecture serves as the foundation on which this eighth generation of Phantom reaffirms its position as ‘The Best Car in the World’ by taking the best fundamentals and making them better. The first major benefit of the new architecture for the New Phantom are lightness, increased stiffness, efficient production of standard and extended wheelbase bodies and uncompromised exterior surface design. The all-new aluminium spaceframe structure delivers extraordinary car body stiffness for exceptional ‘best-in-class’ functional performance whilst also being lighter. Indeed New Phantom is 30 per cent more rigid than its predecessor, leading to better ride comfort. Accompanying the increased stiffness of the spaceframe is a bestin-class high comfort chassis with air suspension and state-of-the-art chassis control systems, delivering peerless ‘effortless’ ride and handling and optimal vibration comfort performance. A new double-wishbone front axle and 5-link rear axle deliver astounding levels of control over lateral roll and shear forces and delivering incredible agility and stability, as does the addition of four-wheel steering, all contributing to an undisturbed passenger whatever the driving conditions. 58 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

Rolls-Royce’s celebrated Magic Carpet Ride also improves as a result of the new lighter architecture, and the latest generation of self-levelling air suspension. The suspension makes millions of calculations every second as it continuously varies the electronically controlled shock absorber adjustment system – reacting to body and wheel acceleration, steering inputs and camera information. In addition, the Flagbearer – evocative of those men who were required by law to carry a red flag ahead of early motor cars – adds a stereo camera system integrated in the windscreen to see the road ahead, adjusting suspension proactively rather than reactively up to 100km/h. The most silent motor car in the world Incalculable effort was expended to create ‘the most silent motor car in the world’ including 6mm two-layer glazing all around the car, more than 130kg of sound insulation, the largest ever cast aluminium joints in a body-in-white for better sound insulation, and use of high absorption materials. Acoustic insulation from road noise has been helped by the employment of double skin alloy on areas within the floor and bulkhead of the spaceframe. This is a feature unique to New Phantom. Further noise insulation by inserting dense foam and felt layers are between these skins to provide sound insulation not witnessed before in the car industry. In addition, high absorption layers within the headliner, in the doors and in the boot cavity have further aided insulation and reduced reverberation. Rolls-Royce also worked closely with its tyre supplier to invent ‘Silent-Seal’ tires – which feature a specific foam layer placed

inside the tyre to wipe out tyre cavity noise and reduce overall tyre noise by 9db, meaning that conversation within the car is completely effortless. All in all it is a perfect 360° cocooning effect in a motor car that is approximately 10 per cent quieter than its predecessor at 100km/h. Indeed, when Rolls-Royce’s acoustic test engineer first reviewed results road and vibration tests, the sound levels were so low they had to check their instruments were calibrated correctly. The heart of a Rolls-Royce – the magnificent V12 reinvented At the heart of every Rolls-Royce of the modern period lies the power of a V12 engine. At the beginning of this next chapter of Rolls-Royce’s existence, and with the creation of the Architecture of Luxury, the New Phantom also benefits from a completely new engine. With the focus on creating the most silent motor car in the world, a completely silent engine was also required, and that meant more low-end output at lower revs to ensure that silence. Hence a completely new, 6.75-litre V12 powertrain has been engineered for New Phantom, in place of the previous naturally aspirated V12 engine. The new V12 Phantom engine employs two turbo chargers that contribute to a low-end torque output of 900Nm at an incredibly low 1,700rpm whilst also delivering 563bhp or 420kW of power, resulting in calm low speed progress associated with state occasions and an unfussed surge of power when one needs to press on. The addition of Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT), married to a ZF 8-Speed gearbox also ensures that the driver is prepared for whatever the road has in

store for them. The most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce ever Another benchmark, the Electronic Architecture of the New Phantom is the largest ever component produced by the BMW Group, let alone Rolls-Royce, helping to make New Phantom the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce ever. This central nervous system connects and controls all the various advanced intelligence systems of New Phantom, making it the most advanced luxury motor car available. Some, but not all, assistance systems on-board New Phantom include: Alertness Assistant, a 4-camera system with Panoramic View, all-round visibility including helicopter view, Night Vision and Vision Assist, Active Cruise Control, collision warning, pedestrian warning, cross-traffic warning, lane departure and lane change warning, an industry leading 7x3 highresolution head-up display, WiFi hotspot, and of course the latest navigation and entertainment systems. New Phantom – A Contemporary Design Masterpiece “Phantom is the epitome of effortless style, an historical nameplate that occupies a rarefied space in the luxury constellation and conjures a rare magic all of its own. New Phantom raises a glass to an illustrious design legacy whilst forging a modern and revitalised presence for the next era of Rolls-Royce design.” Giles Taylor, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars The first Rolls-Royce to be built on the new Architecture of Luxury, the New Phantom is a wholly new and contemporary interpretation of the Phantom DNA, delivering new levels of iconic presence and an increased elegance of line suggesting both poise and stability at speed and an unrushed maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 59

Grand Arrival. On first glance the New Phantom is remarkable in its purity. Thanks to the new Architecture of Luxury and new engineering processes, the precision body joining process ensures there are few, if any, visible join lines between body panels, giving New Phantom the appearance of being hewn from a solid block of aluminium. It is truly a triumph of design and engineering departments working hand in hand to create a beautiful masterpiece. Its opening gesture immediately demonstrates a radical contemporisation of Phantom, through the reimagining of the Pantheon grille at the heart of the design. The strong portrait grille is raised higher than that of Phantom VII today, also resulting in a positioning of the Spirit of Ecstasy approximately a half inch higher. It is redolent of the futuristic design first hinted at on the grille of VISION NEXT 100 – codename 103EX last year, but also influenced by the James Young-era Silver Cloud. However, unlike 103EX and all previous Phantoms, New Phantom’s grille is for the first time integrated into the surrounding bodywork. The resulting effect is a cleaner, reduced design with modernity and clarity,

allowing all New Phantom’s lines to connect with this iconic statement of power and flow from it. In addition, a new purposeful headlamp graphic gives a confident and focused expression with fresh, frosted internals that feel open and optimistic, whilst accommodating an expressive ring of daytime driving lights and the most advanced laserlight system of any motor car that at night casts light 600 metres down the road. This flow is achieved through the handcrafting of beautiful, authentic materials and subtle creases in the bodywork. The key front to rear line begins inboard from the top edge of the grille moving outwards along the body to the rear, lending a sense of dynamism to New Phantom, while the front wing line fades just after the door handle suggesting pace and fluidity. The grille itself is created from hand-polished stainless steel, a material that highlights the precious and timeless nature of this New Phantom and its modern architecture through the use of a visually warm and highly tactile material. Emanating from the upper tips of the grille, the polished stainless steel strips curve along the upper edges of the bonnet and around the windscreen, accentuating the length of the bonnet

and seamlessly blending the cabin to the lower volume as though swept by the wind. From the side, New Phantom has the iconic 2:1 proportions that have endeared so many to every generation of Phantom, featuring a short front and long rear overhang, an upright front and a flowing rear. The rear lines of the car in side view circle forward to the waft line and lead the eye back through the front wheel. The largest single-piece of hand-polished stainless steel on any motor car is the side frame finisher of New Phantom. It beautifully accentuates the elegant stance of the car and with a rounded softer feel, preserves the iconic wide C-pillar for privacy, while allowing the eye to transition easily to the rear. Furthermore, a single polished stainless steel strip is placed on the sill of the Phantom Extended Wheelbase to differentiate it. “The side view design theme of Phantom recalls the elegance of Phantom V. By separating the front wing line from the waist line, we introduce a sense of movement and this line circles back under the car inferring a lighter, fleetness of foot,” comments Taylor. A lot happens at the back of New Phantom as the design evokes the beautiful flowing rears of the 1950’s and 1960’s Phantoms. The rear glass, again defined by an impeccably crafted stainless steel frame, is more raked and the rear lines sleeker than the previous Phantom, whilst a subtle scallop on the rear roof line that hovers above the rear occupant’s assures one of preserved head room. The eye is also drawn inboard by a neat tapered tail, which is constructed of super formed aluminium to ensure more join-free surfaces and flowing bumper lines around the rear light graphic. Subtle creases in the bootlid that hark back to the more pronounced boots

of earlier Phantoms flow on to a pronounced boot lid finisher. Again in stainless steel this feature echoes the front grille whilst allowing the airflow to gracefully depart from the rear of the car. Even the jewellike rear light cluster is furnished in exquisite detail with the famous Double-R badges etched in. Hand-polished stainless steel also envelops the first touchpoints of New Phantom – the handles on the iconic coach doors. Unlike the trend for insubstantial fared in handles, Rolls-Royce understands that the substance of a Rolls-Royce door handle is key to the owners every day physical experience of their motor car, and the feel of this beautiful material under the hand is highly satisfying to them. The final visual expression of Phantom is its wheels, which of course conform to the golden mean of Rolls-Royce design proportion. Essential to providing the sensation of flight on land, the largest high-value alloy wheel ever employed on a Rolls-Royce is offered. At 22-inches, the diameter when shod in RollsRoyce’s Seal Technology Tyres’ delivers a Magic Carpet Ride never experienced in a Rolls-Royce before. Phantom: The World’s Leading Luxury Item Stepping aboard the New Phantom is an occasion in itself. The coach doors stand open. The only choice is whether one drives or is driven. As the patron settles into the car, an assistant or valet steps forward and lightly touches the sensor on the door handle. The door automatically whispers closed of its own accord, enveloping the occupant in ‘The Embrace’ of the World’s Leading Luxury Item.

NEWS

Fundamental to the rear occupant’s experience and enjoyment of their New Phantom is this ‘Embrace’. It re-defines Rolls-Royce comfort and refinement – already the benchmark for any carmaker – to create a detoxifying environment whilst cocooning the occupant in the finest of materials, whilst all four doors are enhanced with this new technology to enfold the occupant. The rear and now front doors can also be effortlessly closed from the inside. ‘The Embrace’ is the vision of Giles Taylor, inspired by his creation of 103EX. He has taken great strides towards evoking the spirit of 103EX with the futuristic interior design of the New Phantom, where nothing detracts from calmness and tranquillity in this particular

sanctuary. Technology is hidden until required, spaces and surfaces are clean, and the eye rests only on beauty as if in an art gallery. As one would expect from a Rolls-Royce, the environment is crafted from the most precious and contemporary of materials. What is unexpected is the feeling of lightness and simplicity, an effortless elegance. From one’s position on beautifully enhanced rear seats, the occupant is borne along in near-silence as if on a pillow of air, thanks to much enhanced ride and acoustic comfort. When in need of a space to reflect on issues of importance or simply lost in

thought, ones imagination is inspired by the largest Starlight Headliner ever seen in a Rolls-Royce. High gloss, exquisitely tactile wood panelling that can be commissioned for the door interiors, centre consoles, dashboard and picnic tables, encircles the passenger in only the most beautiful and authentic materials. The lines at the front of the interior lean forward suggesting a progressive nature, while in contrast the rear doors lean back, relaxing the character of the rear environment. When designing the armrests, the J-Class yacht was heavily referenced as a design inspiration. The tension and ‘hull’ of the armrests are directly influenced by these large sailing yachts. The seats are newly sculpted and hand-crafted to deliver even more comfort. They feature a strong horizontal element through the top of the seat, imparting a sense of width, comfort and presence, whilst visually enhanced with a vertical interpretation of the seat ‘bullet’ previously seen in Wraith and Dawn. The sweep of wood panelling across the back of the front seats have clearly been influenced by the famous Eames Lounge Chair of 1956, a design so regarded by patrons of luxury that it is part of the New York Museum of Modern Art’s permanent display. Cleverly secreted behind the wood panelling on the rear of the front 64 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

seats are the Rear Picnic tables and Rear Theatre Monitors, which are electrically deployed and retracted at the effortless touch of a button, ensuring an uncompromised theatre experience. Rolls-Royce’s customary attention to detail even dictates that the seat controls are repositioned from the centre armrest to a more intuitive position for the user. Phantom patrons will be able to commission different seating choices best suited to their requirements. Choices include the more intimate lounge seat, individual seats with occasional armrest, individual seats with fixed centre console and the newly introduced sleeping seat. The new fixed rear centre console receives significant enhancement, by incorporating a drinks cabinet with whisky glasses and decanter, champagne flutes and coolbox. In any configuration effortless conversation is aided with the very careful angling of the rear seats. This ensures occupants are able to talk to each other without straining their necks. The sense of touch is also satisfied by the continued use of the finest and most authentic materials throughout the interior. Every item of switchgear is made from metal – such as the iconic eyeball vents and organ stop controllers, seat and light switches, violin key window switches – glass or wrapped in the finest leather as dials including the new front and rear Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controllers.

NEWS

Meanwhile, further unseen levels of comfort and refinement are introduced into the Phantom Suite with heated surfaces operated in conjunction with the seat heating functionality. Areas throughout the interior that are now heated include the front door armrests, front centre console lid, lower C-Pillar, rear side armrests with all individual seats, and rear centre armrest. ‘The Gallery’ – an unprecedented new concept in luxury At the heart of the New Phantom’s wholly modern design aesthetic is ‘The Gallery’, a wholly contemporary and luxury reinterpretation of a motor car’s dashboard and instrument panel area. While the character of the monolithic, upright dashboard pays contemporary homage to Rolls-Royce models of the past, with one clean, symmetrical surface, the main fascia veneer takes the eye from the lower centre up and outwards to create a sense of width. All of the elements within ‘The Gallery’ are enclosed in an uninterrupted swathe of toughened glass that runs the full width of the dash area. Within it, the instrument digital dials are framed with chrome, adding a degree of jewellery and continuity throughout the front of the interior. Behind the physical chrome surrounds of the instrument dials, RollsRoyce has embraced a more futuristic approach to clearer instruments for the driver, something requested by Rolls-Royce customers around the world. 12.3 inch TFT colour displays with LED backlighting now communicate all driver information from within the round chrome surrounds, with the displays themselves designed with clear and beautiful virtual needles, Rolls-Royce jewellery-like chaplets and clear lettering. In addition to speed, power reserve, fuel and temperature levels, the displays also react to provide essential information on cruise control settings, navigation instructions, driver assistance systems and a whole host of other information. Also behind the glass of ‘The Gallery’ are housed the analogue clock – a nod the fact that it is “the loudest sound you can hear in a Rolls-Royce …” and the central information screen which can be retracted behind the centre stack when not in use. The standard clock features a dark face and the surround is finished in black leather. However, each Bespoke Clock features a more intricate design, including a lighter backlit face with crystal effect details and counterweighted hands, and is finished to match the material selected within ‘The Gallery’. The Art of Movement “Art is at the heart of the conception of the New Phantom’s interior,” comments Taylor. “As an interest, we know that a huge number of our clients are patrons of art and indeed have their own private collections.

Art is a binding factor for many of them.” This binding factor was what inspired Taylor to radically reinterpret the motor cars’ dashboard from being a dead expanse into a riveting focal point. “I wanted to take a motoring constant that has existed for a century, but served little purpose but to hide airbags and componentry, and give it another purpose, space to breathe,” comments Taylor. Hence the real purpose of ‘The Gallery’ – to be just that, a gallery. By realising a space in the upper dashboard, Taylor envisioned a new use – to create an area for Bespoke works of art and thereby multiply the personalisation potential for every owner of a New Phantom. “In the 18th century, miniatures were highly fashionable and valuable items of art that allowed their owners to carry images of their loved one with them wherever they travelled. I really loved that idea of taking your art with you, when travelling, and so I acted on it,” continues Taylor. “Now, our clients will be able to do the same.” As a Bespoke Commission, customers will be able to choose a favoured artist or designer to work with Rolls-Royce to create a truly individual work of art that spans the width of ‘The Gallery’ in their New Phantom. Rolls-Royce has already worked with a number of artists, designers and design collectives to demonstrate what kind of creations are possible to put behind the glass of ‘The Gallery’ for the owners pleasure. Works as various as an oil painting inspired by the South Downs of England in Autumn by renowned Chinese fine artist Liang Yuanwei, a gold-plated 3D-printed map of an owners DNA created by the enfant terrible of German product design Thorsten Franck, a hand-made stem of the finest porcelain roses handmade by world renowned porcelain manufacturer Nymphenberg or an abstract design in silk by young British artist Helen Amy Murray are some of the creations inspired by this most unusual of Gallery spaces. In addition to these Bespoke Commissions, which will take longer to deliver, Rolls-Royce’s craftspeople and designers at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood have created a stunning collection of forwardlooking Gallery treatments of silk, wood, metal and leather, which are available immediately.

Conclusion The Architecture of Luxury, ‘The Gallery’, The Embrace, The Art of Movement, the best possible materials in the world and peerless RollsRoyce design and engineering; the New Rolls-Royce Phantom resets the benchmark not only as ‘the Best Car in the World’, but as the world’s leading luxury item. As the next chapter in Rolls-Royce’s story opens, the New Rolls-Royce Phantom points the way forward for the global luxury industry.

ALFARDAN PREMIER MOTORS ENJOYS TRIPLE SUCCESS AT JAGUAR LAND ROVER MENA’S MARKETING AWARDS CEREMONY

A

lfardan Premier Motors Co., the exclusive importer of Jaguar Land Rover in the State of Qatar, has scooped three awards at the British luxury carmaker’s annual Retailer Marketing Conference for its retailers in the Middle East and North Africa

region.

Held this year at the Oberoi Hotel in Dubai, the conference is a chance for Jaguar Land Rover MENA to recognise and reward the efforts of its retailer network in the fiercely competitive luxury automotive market. It is testimony to the professionalism and effectiveness of the marketing team at Alfardan Premier Motors during the fiscal year 2016/2017 that its three awards represent the most gained by any Jaguar Land Rover importer within the entire MENA region. Hussein Adra, Marketing & Customer Relationship Manager at Alfardan Premier Motors won the highly prestigious individual “Marketer of the Year 2016/2017” award while the company as a whole took the coveted “Best Experiential Activity 2016/2017” and “Best Social Media Activity 2016/2017” honours. In accepting the awards, Hussein Adra of Alfardan Premier Motors said: “Naturally we are hugely excited and immensely proud to have won three awards at Jaguar Land Rover MENA’s latest Retailer Marketing Conference. Jaguar Land Rover quite rightly sets the bar extremely high for its retailers in all aspects of their marketing operations, so to be the most successful retailer in terms of awards won is particularly pleasing for us and, of course, a great honour.”

Hannah Naji, Brand Director, Jaguar Land Rover MENA Region said: “There is a degree of friendly rivalry between the Jaguar Land Rover concessionaires within the Middle East and North Africa region but equally they are part of a family which shares a common goal of offering outstanding service to customers of these very special brands. That’s why we like to see different retailers learning from each other and aspiring to be the best in the many and varied marketing disciplines and activities they need to master. With these three awards, Alfardan Premier Motors has demonstrated that its marketing activities meet and exceed the rigorous standards we set for our retail partners and we are fully confident that this level of excellence will be maintained into the future.” The annual Jaguar Land Rover MENA Marketing Awards are based on a fastidious analysis of the various metrics that contribute to the success and growth of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands within the region. Elements such as the relevance, creativity and innovation of social media and experiential activities are considered alongside more tangible metrics such as adherence to Jaguar Land Rover marketing procedures and the number of drive experiences completed. Alfardan Premier Motors has proved itself to have mastered the whole spectrum of marketing disciplines, having been a key member of Jaguar Land Rover MENA’s dealers network for almost 20 years. During that time, the company has played a major role in the growth of the Jaguar Land Rover brand in Qatar while contributing to its overall success and record sales within the region. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 69

MCLAREN 720S

ARRIVES IN QATAR

THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA FOR MCLAREN’S SUPER SERIES 78

NEWS

I

n the presence of Sheikh Abdulrahman Bin Ahmed Al Thani Chairman & Managing Director of Al Wajba Motors, the official dealers of McLaren in the state of Qatar, and VIPs from the Qatar Society as well as Car Enthusiasts and Qatari media the new McLaren 720S makes its national debut in Qatar, introducing the second-generation of McLaren’s Super Series and simultaneously raising previously accepted limits of performance in the supercar sector.

most distinctive and remarkable McLaren yet.

“Super Series is the core of the McLaren business and personifies the blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement that is the McLaren heartland. This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new 720S is absolutely true to McLaren’s pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment,” stated by Mr. Saher Baaj, General Manager of McLaren Doha.

The new M480T engine powering the 720S continues the lineage of McLaren’s multiple-award-winning, twin-turbocharged V8 engine series. The 4.0-litre engine, which has 41 percent new part content compared to the 3.8-litre engine that continues to feature in the McLaren Sports Series, generates a maximum of 720PS and 770Nm of torque.

The new 720S is lighter, faster and even more dynamically capable than its McLaren 650S predecessor, with unparalleled levels of interior space and sophistication and a breadth and depth of abilities that will engage and exhilarate the driver. One glance at the 720S identifies it as a bold reinterpretation of McLaren’s design language; rooted in aerodynamic principles, the beautiful form has nothing superfluous about it: immediately and undeniably a McLaren, the new 720S is arguably the

One of the key points in the design of the new Super Series is the absence of radiator intakes on the side of the car; this function is carried out instead by the unique ‘double-skin’ aerodynamic form of the dihedral doors, which channel air to the high-temperature radiators that cool the mid-mounted engine.

Performance is truly astonishing: standstill to 100km/h (62mph) takes less than 3 seconds and just 5 seconds later the car has passed the 200km/h (124mph) mark on its way to a maximum speed of 341km/h (212mph). Braking is equally impressive, the new 720S coming to a halt from 200km/h (124mph) in just 4.6 seconds, covering 117m. Additionally, the extreme efficiency of the engine also goes beyond mere velocity: the new McLaren 720S delivers 10.7 litres/km combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 249g/km in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 79

NEWS

McLaren’s expertise in carbon fibre structures – every road car built by the British manufacturer since the McLaren F1 in 1993 has had a carbon fibre chassis – underpins the construction of the new 720S; the architecture of the car is based around a new carbon fibre ‘tub’ and upper structure, the McLaren Monocage II. This technology delivers extreme strength and rigidity in a lightweight structure and is the ideal base for any supercar. A range of aluminium alloys are also used extensively in the chassis, as well as for some body panels. A new generation of McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control, new suspension and the established excellence of McLaren’s powerassisted, electro-hydraulic steering, all combine to deliver huge reserves of grip, balance and performance and an unmatched breadth of dynamic capabilities. The hand-crafted luxury inherent in a McLaren, with the authenticity of fine leathers and machined aluminium, is complemented by the revolutionary new McLaren Driver Interface, which comprises a Folding Driver Display and Central Infotainment Screen. In combination with a cabin environment that establishes new standards in the supercar segment for visibility, space and comfort, these attributes give the new McLaren 720S an incredible degree of usability and validate its claim to be the most complete supercar on sale today.

The first purely electrically powered MINI to be manufactured in large-scale production will go on the road in 2019 – precisely 60 years after the classic Mini was first launched. It will make electromobility a highly emotional experience that combines driving fun, style and individual flair – as is characteristic of the MINI brand. Lots of driving fun on a small surface area – this traditional principle will remain an integral part of MINI in the future, too. It is a fundamental element of its character that is derived from spectacular motor racing success. 50 years ago the classic Mini achieved its third outright victory at the Monte Carlo Rally. The MINI ACV 30 concept study presented 20 years ago, demonstrated just how much the model’s racing career influenced not only the history of the classic Mini but also the development of the modern MINI. The Anniversary Concept Vehicle that came out right on time to mark the 30th anniversary of the car’s third triumph at the “Monte” showed how the classic Mini’s characteristic design features – such as the hexagon radiator grille and the large circular headlamps – could be transferred to a modern vehicle concept. The foundation stone was laid for a new era full of driving fun and individual style in a variety of forms. Diversity and individual character were also embodied by the other elements of the MINI trade fair showcase in Frankfurt. The British premium manufacturer presented a broad cross-section of its range, containing elements drawn from the current model program, its rich selection of optional equipment and the latest additions in the area of accessory and lifestyle products. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 85

Close collaboration between design and aerodynamics experts Aerodynamics engineers and designers worked together more intensively than ever during the development of the new AMG GT R. Together, they ensured that every element of the AMG GT R has an inherent technical benefit that enhances driving dynamics. Moreover, the AMG design idiom of “Dynamic Presence” formed the basis for the vehicle’s expressive appearance and very distinct look. The design of the AMG GT R embodies sensuous clarity – hot & cool. In addition to the powerfully sculpted body and motorsport components, the new AMG Panamericana grille is a real eye-catcher. This unique feature also comes from the world of motorsport and marks its standardproduction première in the AMG GT R - its 15 chrome-plated vertical fins cite the look of the new AMG GT3 racing car.

Level 9 allows maximum slip on the rear axle. A luminescent band of LEDs around the rotary switch indicates the current setting this display logic likewise has its origins in motorsport. In addition, the setting is indicated on the instrument cluster’s central display.

Individual set-up: AMG coil-over suspension The suspension of the new AMG high-performance sports model is also designed for racetrack use. Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers on the front and rear axle are manufactured entirely out of forged aluminium in order to reduce the unsprung masses. The new AMG coil-over suspension was designed specifically for the AMG GT R. Like in professional motorsport, drivers can select their personal set-up and infinitely adjust the spring pre-load manually. This makes it possible to influence the dive and roll behaviour as well as the grip of the AMG GT R precisely as needed to tailor them to personal preferences or particular racetracks.

Ready to race: the interior design As is the case with other elements, the AMG GT R’s interior draws inspiration from motorsport. The low seat position seamlessly integrates the driver into the cockpit. Extremely light, manually adjustable AMG sports bucket seats upholstered in Exclusive nappa leather and DINAMICA microfibre come as standard in GCC markets. Alternatively, tried-and-tested AMG performance seats can be ordered as an option at no extra cost. The optional yellow seat belts, dials with yellow highlights, the AMG Interior Piano Lacquer package and special controls, including those for the new AMG TRACTION CONTROL, underline the unique standing of the new AMG GT R. The widelooking dashboard with its four central spotlight-style vents, and the individual vents at the right and left ends of the dashboard, reinforce the sporty impression. The new AMG Interior Night package comes as standard. In this package, the shift paddles, steering wheel spokes, seat insert (on the AMG performance seat), door sills and boot cross member are finished in high-gloss black, which combines with the standard specification AMG Interior Piano Lacquer package to further emphasise the sportiness. Customers can optionally order the trim in matte black carbon fibre.

Agility and stability: the active rear-wheel steering The new AMG GT R is even more sensitive to steering inputs thanks to standard-fit active rearwheel steering, which is being used for the first time on a Mercedes-AMG model. The system offers an ideal combination of agility and stability handling characteristics that are normally in direct conflict. The advantage of the AMG GT R is far more agile when steering into bends, resulting in even greater driving enjoyment and less steering effort especially on small and winding roads, narrow racetracks on which there are multiple changes in direction, or slalom courses. Further benefits include increased manoeuvrability and a smaller turning circle in everyday driving situations such as when turning or parking. The active rear-wheel steering not only improves cornering, it also assists the driver in the event of sudden evasive manoeuvres, thereby enhancing safety and making the AMG GT R easier to control at the limit. Grip to the power of nine: AMG TRACTION CONTROL The AMG GT R is not short on innovations. For example, the ESP OFF mode allows drivers to exert even more influence on the handling characteristics of the AMG GT R. The new AMG TRACTION CONTROL system - another direct influence from motorsport - allows drivers to pre select the slip on the driven rear axle in nine levels. Just like in the current AMG GT3, it isolates the grip on the driven wheels and does not affect the stabilisation provided by the ESP®. Corresponding characteristic maps are programmed into the vehicle electronics. Control is via a special rotary switch located in the centre console below the ventilation outlets. Depending on the setting, the system permits more or less slip on the rear wheels very helpful in varying road conditions. Level 1 is programmed for driving in the wet with high safety reserves.

90 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

Variable ratio: speed-sensitive sports steering The speed-sensitive sports steering features a variable steering ratio, which enhances vehicle handling and agility at low speeds while maintaining driving safety at high speeds. The power assistance is a particular highlight: it responds not only depending on the given road speed, but also according to the current lateral acceleration and the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive mode. The result: the driver has a perfect feel for the vehicle thanks to the direct feedback from the road.

More power, more torque, faster response: the Engine The AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine in the AMG GT R has an output of 430 kW (585 hp), which is 55 kW (75 hp) more than the previous top-ofthe- range engine in the GT S. The peak torque of 700 Nm is available between 1900 and 5500 rpm. With acceleration of zero to 100km/h achieved in just 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 318 km/h, the capabilities of the AMG GT R will undoubtedly translate into extremely fast laps on the racetrack. The increase in performance was achieved with the help of new turbochargers with modified compressor machining, smaller wastegate aneroid capsule and sharpened engine mapping. The eight-cylinder unit thrills with its spontaneous response, precisely measured power output and linear power delivery with powerful thrust in all engine speed ranges, all of which makes the car far easier to control when driving at the limit.

NEWS

The AMG 4.0-litre V-8 engine features the tried-andtested twin turbochargers, which are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks but rather inside the V configuration – experts call it a ‘hot inside V’. The benefits are: a compact engine design, spontaneous response from the turbochargers and low exhaust gas emissions thanks to optimum air flow for the closecoupled catalytic converters. This basic principle of the new AMG V-8 family has been further optimized for the AMG GT R and enables further improved performance. Even more suitable for the racetrack: the dual clutch Transmission The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission configured in transaxle layout at the rear axle has likewise been extensively revised by the AMG developers, who modified the hardware and the software to make the transmission even more suitable for the racetrack. First gear in the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission has a longer ratio, while seventh gear and the final drive have shorter ratios to allow a more agile acceleration experience that rapidly responds to fast accelerator pedal movements. Drivers can tailor the AMG GT R to their personal preferences using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT controller. Various modes are available: “C” (Comfort), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport Plus) and “I” (Individual). The “RACE” mode optimally adjusts the shift strategy of the dual clutch transmission to the needs of racetrack usage – shortest shift speeds and highly emotional engine sound

are included. By pressing the separate “M” button in the centre console, the driver can activate the manual transmission mode in any drive mode. AMG Track package Those heading off to the racetrack can choose the optional AMG Track package, which can be ordered exclusively for the AMG GT R. It consists of a roll-over protection system, an included 4-point seat belt for the driver and a fire extinguisher. The screwed steel tube cage of the roll-over protection system is positioned directly behind the seats and painted black. On special request a version is available in the vehicle colour. The cage comprises a main bar, a belt anchor point strut, two rear struts plus a diagonal rear cross. The system offers the driver even greater protection in case of an accident. It also further increases the already excellent vehicle rigidity and thus also has a positive influence on the vehicle’s dynamics. The included 4-point seat belt is exclusively intended for use on the racetrack and only in combination with the AMG sports bucket seat. It fixes the driver optimally in the seat even during strong lateral acceleration. Due to the central buckle it is also very quick and easy to unfasten the belt. It goes without saying that the 3-point seat belt for on-road use remains on board. The New AMG GT R is now available at the Nasser Bin Khaled Mercedes-Benz dealership located on Salwa Road.

Another exterior feature change is the new ‘Diamond Cut’ styled alloy wheels which further accentuates the design of the new City giving it even more confident and sophisticated look.

he seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan will cut a sporty, elegant and stylish figure when it hits the roads.Further enhanced dynamics, an unbeatable line-up of assistance systems, an unmatched degree of connectivity and a new and innovative operating system are the most important new features. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan therefore has all the tools it needs to continue the remarkable success recorded by its predecessors; around 7.9 million BMW 5 Series cars were sold across its first six generations. “The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series points the way into the future, as we have defined it with our NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy. We see technological leadership, emotionally rich products and digitalisation as essential factors in achieving success. With the expansion of our model portfolio in the large-vehicle classes, we are satisfying the wishes of many customers. I’m in no doubt that the new BMW 5 Series will set new benchmarks technologically, but also have huge emotional appeal. It remains the epitome of the business sedan,” says Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG.

NEWS

Superior driving pleasure and unsurpassed aerodynamics. Rigorous application of the BMW EfficientLightweight lightweight design concept, with increased use of aluminum and highstrength steels, reduces the weight of the 5 Series Sedan by up to 100 kilograms from that of its predecessor. The newly designed chassis, a low centre of gravity, BMW’s hallmark even weight distribution and a lightweight body offering exceptional torsional stiffness combine a wonderfully dynamic driving experience with the long-distance comfort for which the BMW 5 Series is renowned. Various chassis options such as Integral Active Steering, which can now be teamed with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, add further talents to a dynamics-focused overall package designed to ensure the BMW 5 Series once again stands at the top of its class. The drag coefficient of the new, 4,935 millimetre-long BMW 5 Series Sedan (Cd = 0.22 at its most efficient) sets the benchmark in its class. The next step to automated driving. A wealth of assistance systems are on hand in the new BMW 5 Series to offer the driver unbeatable support – not only at critical moments but also in less demanding situations at the wheel, such as traffic jams, slow-moving traffic, and monotonous

stretches of motorway. To this end, it is fitted as standard with a stereo camera, which teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the car. New features in the BMW 5 Series alongside the evasion aid and Crossing traffic warning are the Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection. The latter keeps an eye on the lane markings and the area around the car, and actively helps the driver to avoid looming collisions by applying corrective steering inputs.

The BMW 5 Series also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and lane control assistant. These include adoption of speed restrictions, which drivers can select as part of the Speed Limit Assist option. Drivers can confirm adoption of a speed restriction and make an adjustment of +/– 15 km/h / 9 mph in the system settings. From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph) the car assists the driver with distance-keeping, accelerating, braking and lane control. This increases comfort significantly – in particular at low speeds and in slow-moving traffic on clogged up motorway sections. The intelligent Auto Start Stop function now adjusts its responses to the route and traffic conditions and therefore offers even greater driving comfort. Intuitive usability and extensive comfort. With even greater user-friendliness as its goal, the new BMW 5 Series is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive system. In top specification, it displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a highresolution 10.25-inch screen. The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes. The large, tile-style panels can be arranged as desired and show the content of the underlying menus in constantly updated form. The latest-generation full-colour BMW Head-Up Display has a projection surface that is 70 per cent larger than before and displays traffic signs, telephone listings, radio stations, music tracks, navigation instructions and warnings from the assistance systems. Maximising the levels of on-board comfort are extended storage options, greater legroom for rear-seat passengers and comfort seats with massage function, not to mention innovative seat operation using touch sensors and fourzone climate control complete with ionisation and discreet air fragrancing. Special Synergy Thermoacoustic Capsule

(SYNTAK) engine encapsulation technology, the acoustic glazing for the windscreen and the acoustic headliner bring about another noticeable reduction in noise levels inside the car. All headlight variants specified for the BMW 5 Series Sedan come as standard with LED technology. Available as an option are Adaptive LED Headlights with variable light distribution including adaptive roundabout lights and BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle high beam with a range of up to 500 metres. BMW 530i and BMW 540i: the new petrol engines. All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan line-up belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology imbues all the members of the family with outstanding performance combined with exceptional efficiency. Two diesel engines and two petrol variants will be available from launch, working in tandem with either rear-wheel drive or BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The new two-litre four-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW 530i develops peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) and maximum output of 185 kW/252 hp. Its fuel consumption in the combined cycle comes in at 5.4 litres/100 km (52.3 mpg imp)*, which means CO2 emissions of 126 g/km – down more than 11 per cent on its predecessor’s figures. The BMW 530i accelerates from 0 ‑ 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The flagship engine at launch will be the 250 kW/340 hp unit under the bonnet of the new BMW 540i. This three-litre straight-six produces torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). Despite its extra output and sharper dynamic edge, average fuel consumption stands at only 6.5 l/100 km (43.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are kept to just 150 g/km*. In xDrive guise, the BMW 540i powers from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 4.8 seconds.

BMW X3

REDEFINING THE ENTIRE SEGMENT YET AGAIN By: Tarek Hawchar

he SUV segment today is more diverse than it has ever been. The term SUV once referred only to full-size luxury seven-seaters, but today has a much broader use. It encompasses everything from small crossovers to midsize SUVs. At the middle of the pack you have what’s called the SAV segment (short for Sports Activity Vehicle). It’s a variation of the SUV, and it all started with this: the BMW X3. Launched back in 2003, it revolutionized the segment of mid-size crossovers. The market demand for such a vehicle was rather large, and as soon as BMW saw the opportunity, they went for it. The sale figures speak for themselves. In the last 14 years, the BMW X3 spanning across two generations has sold in 1.5 million examples. For such a relatively new model, that figure is insanely high. After revising most of its model range, BMW has finally decided to give the X3 the same treatment as well. The brand-new 2018 X3 is raising the bar once again, proving to be the benchmark by which all other manufacturers measure their own entries. It’s an evolution of the already great second-gen BMW X3. In essence, it’s perfecting what was already a near perfect all-rounder. Because it’s a BMW though, it innovates the segment and offers several segment firsts. In order to find out if everything BMW claims is true, we were invited to test drive the new X3 in Lisbon, Portugal.

112 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

Needless to say, they didn’t have to persuade us at all. After some planning, we found ourselves on a plane heading for Germany, the mecca for car enthusiasts. The flight was alright, but no one really noticed anything because we were all excited to drive the vehicle. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to drive a mid-size SUV. Somehow, I just knew it would be a good experience. Exterior After being handed the keys to our demo car, I thought it would be good to just stand back and inspect the car before taking off. BMW doesn’t usually like deviate a lot in terms of design evolution, but the new X3 is exactly that: new. Park it next to the second-gen X3 and the changes are immediately visible, if not drastic. Even someone who’s not particularly into cars can tell the two straight away. There’s no denying which is the new car and which is the old one. Let’s start with the front, since I feel like that’s where most of the improvements lie. For starters, the kidney grilles are bigger. They’re now at a point where I would genuinely consider calling them massive. I like that though. The chrome shroud surrounding them has a more angular rake as well, and they go all the way around the

C O V E R S TO RY

actual grille. The small horizontal vent the predecessor featured is now gone, making room for a bigger air dam. The corners of the bumper have been altered too. The vents have an upside-down L shape with a unique trim application. The overhang isn’t shorter but it is a lot sportier thanks to a sharper cut-off near the bottom. Last but not least, there are the new headlights. The dated units on the last X3 have been completely thrown in the bin. The new units are a lot sleeker and more similar to something you’d find on the current G30 and F30. They utilize the latest LED technology, including angular LED rings just like those on the BMW M2. Oh, and the foglights are LED too. Move over to the side and you’ll notice a roofline with a larger slope. It’s sleeker and more aerodynamic than before, something you can tell even with the naked eye. The rear hatch is squarer, i.e. more angular. This gives the X3 a more elongated appearance. It gives off the illusion of being a lot longer than it actually is. Most of all though, I like that it sits lower than the old car without sacrificing any ground clearance. The wheels fill out the wheel wells superbly.

The rear features a lot of changes too, but nowhere near as many as the front. The same hatch design carries over unchanged, as does the upper section of the fascia. The LED taillights are new though, as is the single exhaust pipe on either side (as opposed to duals). The lower portion of the bumper has been restyled to give off a sportier look.

BMW HAS FINALLY FITTED THE X3 WITH A MODERN 10.2-INCH TOUCHSCREEN

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 113

C O V E R STO RY

There are three distinct X3 variants: the xLine, the Luxury Line, and the M Sport package. There’s nothing special about the xLine, though it does get skid plates which are now standard on all models. The Luxury line features a chrome grille and window graphics (as opposed to aluminum in the xLine), as well as bi-colored trim elements. Both are great, but it’s the M Sport package you really want if I’m honest. It gets a unique aerodynamic kit which makes the car look a lot cooler (and offers some functionality), M Sport brakes, a bespoke exhaust and tweaked suspension. The 19 and 20-inch wheels are naturally available, but if you want the largest wheels the X3 can accommodate, BMW will sell you one with 21-inch M light alloys. Interior BMW doesn’t have the flashiest of interiors, but that’s why they’re so appealing for most people. Open the door, get it in it, and stand back in awe at the sheer quality of everything. It’s difficult to explain it, but when you get in something as wonderfully crafted as this, you can almost smell the quality. It has a certain scent and aura about it. It feels as though it was built to last you an entire lifetime, and seeing as how it’s BMW, it probably will. There’s no two ways about it: the X3 has its rivals pinned when it comes to fit and finish. I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect BMW to focus so much on the design of the cabin. Usually it’s functional but a bit bland and boring. Not so with the new X3. They’ve made sure to give the elements a bit of flare, either through flowing lines or interesting creases. Take the dash for instance. It’s no longer flat and gray. The smooth lines, sloping profile and sharp edge right in the middle make it exciting to look at. Even the HVAC vents started taking on a different shape other than just square. They’re molded into the dash design, taking on the same lines and angles. I also like how the entire dash is tilted towards the driver. It’s nice to see BMW deviating slightly from their usual conservative selves. Hey, you have to start from somewhere right?

The center console is wonderful as well. It’s clean and simple, with no excess buttons to clutter the design. BMW has finally fitted the X3 with a modern 10.2-inch touchscreen. What’s more, it’s not a floating unit, which most people always thought annoying and a hassle. The instrument cluster is clear and easy to read, and I particularly liked the ambient lighting. It gives the car certain warmth at night. Plus, it also looks cool. The seating position is traditional BMW. Although it’s not a car, you do get the feeling that you sit inside it rather than on top of it. Not many, if any SUVs can pull that off. The seats themselves offer a lot of support, but are incredibly comfortable as well. The car just ate up the miles and not once did I feel cramped or was forced to stop because of the seats.

116 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

The steering wheel is brand-new, with a smaller hub and upswept side spokes. It’s a bit weird if you’re used to M steering wheels like in the M3/M4, but you get used to it after the first couple of miles. Just like the exterior, the three different trims change interior materials and finish. The xLine’s interior is finished in gloss black and you get cloth upholstery as standard. Leather can be had at a premium. The Luxury line offers leather seats as standard, as well as Dark Oak wood trim scattered throughout the cabin. Last but by no means least there’s the M Sport model. The Aluminum Rhambicle trim looks great when matched with BMW’s individual headliner and the M Sport seats. They come with matching black leather and blue stitching. M Sport models also feature bespoke sill finishers and even unique floor mats.

YOU’LL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY HOW NIMBLE AND AGILE IT IS

Engine and Performance

The new X3 hits dealers in mid to late November, with plenty of engine choices on offer. In Europe, most of the sales will be comprised of diesels. The xDrive20d and the xDrive30d are essentially a carryover from the last X3, with the respective 2.0-liter four-cylinder and the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged diesels. The smaller unit makes 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, with the larger one producing a healthier 258 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque. That last figure is especially impressive, even more so because it’s available from just 2,000 rpm. All-wheel drive is standard for the diesel range, and the 30d will sprint to 62 mph in just 5.8 seconds. Top speed is 149 mph. Kicking off the petrol range is the sDrive20i (and the equivalent xDrive 20i). The 20i comes with the familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 184 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque. The sprint to 62 mph takes 8.2 seconds and the top speed is 134 mph. Not fast, but not particularly slow for an entry-level model. Upgrading to the 30i gives you 252 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque to play with, all derived from the same turbocharged four-cylinder. It will reach 62 mph in 6.3 seconds and go on to 149 mph.

118 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

Then we get to the M40i. BMW’s xDrive is standard, as is the famous 3-liter turbocharged straight-six. The power figures are impressive: 360 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.

C O V E R S TO RY

To say it’s quick would be an understatement. The M40i threads the line between quick and fast, leaning more towards the latter. It will catapult itself to 62 mph in an astonishing 4.8 seconds, before hitting the 155 mph top speed limiter like a brick wall. It outruns a lot of sports cars, let alone hot hatchbacks. Power is sent to the driven wheels via BMW’s eight-speed Steptronic transmission. They didn’t release any information on specific updates, but the transmission has been upgraded for faster shift times and more smoothness. BMW’s transmission is one of the best in the business, whether you go for a diesel or a petrol engine. I find it works brilliant with the xDrive AWD system as well. Because the X3 doesn’t weigh a lot, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how nimble and agile it is. I know I was. Performing on the Autobahn is one thing, but delivering when the road gets twisty is another. You see, most SUVs struggle when you chuck them at a set of corners. They’re happy to do it at a 5/10th pace, but any more and you get woeful body roll and appalling understeer. That’s where the X3 gets into its stride. Both the xLine and the Luxury line handle composed and sensible, but it’s the M Sport which will really impress you. It’s not just great for an SUV, but it’s great full stop. Body roll is practically non-existent, and you can sort out understeer with your right foot. It’s happy to adjust itself under acceleration, but you’ll find that the chassis is actually neutral and quite sweet. It’s got an eager turn in, with the xDrive system pulling you out from the exit of the corner at a remarkable pace.

Conclusion To answer the original question: yes, the X3 is every bit as good as BMW claimed it would be. I like how it looks both inside and out, but am even more impressed by how it drives. It was stable on the Autobahn at 120+ mph, and it never missed a beat when I introduced it to a set of corners. Granted, we didn’t do a lot of off-roading, but the xDrive system inspires confidence. I’m sure it can conquer most mild off-road obstacles and trails. BMW, you’ve done it again. The 2018 X3 really does redefine the entire segment yet again.

Let’s just say that something looking so tall and so ‘off-road-ish’ should never corner like the X3 does. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 119

NAMING YOUR CAR “SUPERFAST” TAKES A LOT OF COURAGE

Ferrari’s test circuit in Fiorano is the birth place of all things Ferrari

124 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

If you get a chance to drive a Ferrari, you say yes without thinking twice about it. When the Ferrari in question is the latest 812 Superfast flagship, your question is when can I drive it? That’s exactly what happened with us. I got a call from Ferrari asking whether I’d like to test out their latest creation. Naturally a positive response from me followed, and the entire trip was planned out in a matter of hours. Planes are usually boring and dull, but they’re even more so when you’re extremely eager to get behind the wheel of, what might be, the best Ferrari ever made. Ferrari LaFerrari excluded of course. Naming your car Superfast takes a lot of courage. Ferrari has used the moniker in the past but even still, you have to make sure whatever you make turns out to be simply remarkable.

ROA D T R I P They’ve done the same thing with the GTO nameplate, but Superfast implies that the car is special even if you don’t know anything about Ferrari history. So then, the question we’ve all wanted to know: “Is it really super fast?” The short answer to that question is “Yes”, but more on that in a bit. Upon arriving in Maranello we had an hour or so to kill before we had to rush to Fiorano. Ferrari’s test circuit in Fiorano is the birth place of all things Ferrari. It’s where the company tests its new cars and sees how they stack up against the entire lineup. The track is astonishing, but the facilities surrounding it aren’t far behind. From the massive entrance to the incredible lab-like showrooms and offices. It’s an experience in and of itself.

Then we got to see the car, and wow is it gorgeous in person. I’ll be honest when I say that I wasn’t too thrilled on its looks from the pictures. The F12 seemed to be a lot more aggressive and nicely proportioned. Seeing it in person though changed everything. The 812 Superfast is every bit as beautiful as the F12 it replaces. The fang-like headlights stand out when looking at the car head on, and the redesigned opening at the bottom of the bumper is even bigger now. It’s all functional of course, but there’s no denying that it looks as cool as you like. From the side it’s not that different from an F12, but it shares the same basic formula so you can’t really blame them. Plus no one ever criticized the F12 for its design. The 812 is long and low, as any GT car should be. The elongated hood makes the long wheelbase appear even longer, but the short front and rear overhangs ensure it still remains proportional. I especially liked the little crease behind the side windows with an integrated vent. It makes the top half look like a jet canopy.

The rear houses the biggest difference (in my opinion). The new twin taillights replace the old single units, but opinions on the matter seem to be split down the side. I personally like how it looks because it separates it from the F12. It’s not better but different. The cabin is F12-like, but Ferrari has introduced some changes here and there. The materials are great as usual, but the fit and finish seems to be perfected even more. If you’ve been in an F12 or a 488 you’ll be accustomed to the 812. My favorite part? The HUD screen in front of the passenger with gear, rev and speed info. At the heart of the 812 Superfast lies a 6.5-liter V12 with 800 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque. Start it up and it greets you with a rumble only a V12 can emit. Despite its massive capacity its eagerness to rev is still mind-blowing. Peak power comes at 8,400 and peak torque arrives at 7,000 rpm. The rev limit is 8,900. You don’t get that out of small fourcylinders, let alone a big V12.

ROAD TR I P

Fiorano proved to be a great place to let the 812 stretch its legs a bit. The sprint to 100 km/h takes just 2.9 seconds, but the 7.9 seconds to 200 km/h time is even more impressive. It will break the 330 km/h barrier without breaking a sweat but we didn’t have a chance to test its top speed. Acceleration however, can only be described as brutal. The actual power arrives in a linear and smooth manner, but there’s so much of it that the car never stops pulling. Third to fifth takes less than first to third in most modern hatchbacks. No, really… it’s that fast. The suspension feels stiffer when compared to the F12, but that simply translates to better feedback on track. Leave all the systems on and the 812 Superfast is a rollercoaster you can control. Turn them off though and you better know what you’re doing. There’s a ton of grip but unless you’re careful the rear tires will have no trouble letting go under all that power. Powersliding is possible even in fourth and fifth with long sweepers. That’s right, I said fifth gear. To get an idea of what it would be like in the real world (because it’s a GT car after all), we took it around Fiorano on some small twisty roads. The 812 is impressive on the track, but it’s unbeatable on the road.

Its (relatively) compact size means it doesn’t feel big even for narrow Italian roads, and the suspension coped beautifully with holes and bumps. The softest setting turns it into a true GT car, much more so than the F12. You can never escape that big V12 up front though. On public roads, the F12 feels borderline insane. Two seconds of full throttle mean you’re definitely breaking the speed limit, and 5 to 6 seconds will see you up there in potential jail-time territory. It’s too fast for the road, there’s no two ways about it. You can of course lift off at any moment, but that 8,900 rpm redline urges you to nail the V12 and hear it scream.

The way I see it, the 812 has two problems. You’ll have to constantly change rear tires and pay for speeding tickets. On second thought, if you can afford an 812 those aren’t issues.

HOW TO DRESS UP FOR AN INTERVIEW? By: Dr. Marie Abou Rached

Have you ever asked yourself how to dress up for an interview? Will Dressing properly increase the chance to get a job? Is it appropriate to ask about the dress code for the interview? Dressing professionally shows respect for the interviewer, the company, and yourself. Professional appearance is translated into professional behavior and credibility. According to the psychologist Albert Mehrabian the nonverbal communication (body language and appearance) compose 55% from the first impression. According to kate Wendleton, president and founder of the Five O’Clock Club, it’s recommended to dress one or two levels higher than the job that you’re going for by following the rule of the thumb. Suit is the best outfit for an interview. A suit means a matching jacket and pants, a dress shirt, a tie, matching socks and dress shoes.

SUIT: for selecting the right suit, we recommend the following: »» It’s recommended to wear a navy suit for a first interview and a deep gray for the second interview. However, you can select a subtle shadow-stripe suit for the third interview. »» A single-breasted suit is a safe choice. »» A two-button style is the most classical. (Three-button cut is acceptable as well) »» Fabric should be selected according to the season and it has to be professionally pressed. »» Pants should be well pressed as well the shirt has to be ironed and neatly tucked-in. »» Selecting the right size for the suit is mandatory.

SHIRT:

»» A simple shirt collar in a business style is the best. »» White color is recommended for the first interview. »» Avoid blue, ecru, chambray or pinstripe shirts. »» A blue shirt with the gray suit is a good choice for the second interview »» Shirt should be neat and as crisp as possible. »» The shirt should be 100 percent cotton, without blends. »» Avoid tab collars and pins. »» Monograms and jaunty contrasting white-collarand-cuffs are unsuitable for an interview. »» Skip the loud prints shirt like plaid.

SHOES AND SOCKS:

TIE:

»» The tie is tremendously important. It’s the first noticeable thing in a man’s outfit. »» Classic stripe, neat pattern, or small dots style on a tie are a good choice. »» It’s preferable to avoid bright, loud colors or statement-making. »» The tie has to be well-knotted and ideally with a dimple. 132 ISSUE 9 / maqinaonline.com

»» Black lace-up shoes are ideal for an interview. »» Penny loafers and gimmicky with buckles or straps are not the best choice. »» Shoes should be clean and well-polished. »» Shoes have to be in good conditions, not scuffed and scratched. »» Socks should correspond to the dress level of the rest of the ensemble. »» The socks’ colors have to match with the trousers’ colors and not with the shoes’ colors. »» Dress socks are the best choice for a formal suit. »» The sock’s length should be ankle-dress or knee length.

HYGIENE:

“People who dress better are typically treated better at work” although “They are usually given more responsibility and are shown much more respect.” Says David McKnight, a New York City-based image consultant.

According to David McKnight says: “A suit is a nonverbal way of communicating to the employer that you really want the position and that you are taking the interview extremely seriously”

“Any time you want to add authority, put on the jacket,” says Susan Bixler, president and founder of the Bixler Consulting Group.

According to 2,099 hiring managers and human resource professionals who participated in CareerBuilder’s survey: the safest colors to wear to a job interview are the conservative colors such blue, black, brown and grey, but colors that signal creativity, like orange color, are inappropriate for an interview”. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 9 133

FERRARI

F40 The Ferrari F40 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door coupé sports car produced by Ferrari from 1987 to 1992 as the successor to the Ferrari 288 GTO. From 1987 to 1989 it was Ferrari’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car. The car had no traction control, and a rather agressive power delivery from it’s twin turbo V8 engine...Rated by many as the greatest Supercar of them all, the F40 was the last car commissioned by the late Enzo Ferrari, to celebrate 40 years of production at Maranello.

Following on from the 288 GTO Evoluziones, the F40 took the concept of a powerful engine in a lightweight body a stage further. With a power to weight ratio of over 400bhp/ton the F40 set new standards of performance - eclipsing even the Porsche 959 with its 200mph top speed and brutal acceleration. Even today - these are really good fun to drive - and without the proliferation of driver aids seen in modern supercars - you are reminded what “real driving is all about when an F40 comes on boost - especially when the road you are travelling on is not completely dry.
