THE BENTLEY BENTAYGA BLACK SPECIFICATION: DESIGNED FOR THE MIDDLE EAST

B

entley Motors has introduced a special new version of its luxury SUV, the Bentayga, designed especially for the Middle East following feedback from customers in the region. The ‘Bentayga Black Specification’ features an array of special interior and exterior design touches created by its Mulliner stylists to give the world’s fastest SUV a dramatic and powerful appearance. Finished in an endless array of paint options, the Bentayga Black Specification features Bentley’s luxurious carbon fibre styling specification as standard. The highly distinctive carbon fibre touches can be found on the front bumper splitter, side sills, rear bumper diffuser and rear spoiler.

Providing a muscular stance, the Bentayga Black Specification sits on painted black 22” five spoke directional alloy wheels with matching gloss-black painted exhaust tail pipes and wing vents to compliment the black theme. The tailpipes can be an oval design – for W12 models - or ‘twin quad’, for diesel powered models. The Bentayga was launched in the Middle East in 2016 and is Bentley’s first SUV model. Unlike any other sport utility vehicle in the world, the Bentayga perfectly blends powerful, all-terrain capability with the finest, most luxurious materials available to deliver an exceptional driving experience.

AAB LAUNCHES ALL-NEW FLAGSHIP SEDAN LEXUS LS500 & LS 500H FEATURING INNOVATIVE STYLING, EMOTIONAL DRIVING AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES

A

AB repeated history by announcing the launch of the all-new, fifth-generation LS500 & LS500h flagship sedan for 2018 in Qatar. Equipped with several world-firsts and Lexus’ first performance, design, and safety features, the new premium passenger car is set to not only win the hearts of the region’s luxury enthusiasts, but also redefine luxury driving in a more stylish manner. Combining painstaking craftsmanship with Lexus’ expertise and attention to detail, the flagship sedan embodies Lexus’ evolution as a luxury lifestyle brand committed to surprising and delighting its customers. The event was attended by Dr. Nasser Abdulghani Al Abdulghani AAB Chairman & His Excellency, Seiichi Otsuka, Ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar along with Mr. R.K Murugan AAB Chief Operating OfficerACEO in addition to senior delegation from Lexus International and AAB Senior Management. Setting yet another benchmark in driving dynamics, customer experience, and comfort, inside and out, the new LS reflects a strong, uniquely Japanese identity and approach to luxury, and offers innovative technology with a human touch. The all-new LS was designed to be the brand’s latest global citizen, available in over 90 countries. “Not only will the LS symbolize the Lexus brand, but it will also become the definitive new-generation luxury car embodying Japanese tradition and culture. Developing such a flagship model required a massive paradigm shift. Rather than being bound by the conventions that had defined luxury cars in the past, we aimed to create a car with an innovative, emotional, and sensual appeal that would draw customers’ eyes away from other luxury cars and provide entirely new values,” said LS Chief Engineer Toshio Asahi.

14 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

Takayuki Yoshitsugu, Chief Representative, Middle East and North Africa Representative ‎Office, Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “Considered to be in a new league of its own, the all-new LS sedan builds on the flagship vehicle’s enduring DNA for smooth and powerful performance, which in combination with its remarkable quietness and exceptional comfort, symbolizes the true essence of the LS. In addition to its styling that delivers a bold coupe silhouette while offering a spacious interior, the fifth-generation LS offers an emotional driving experience and is equipped with a host of cutting-edge technologies. In many ways, this LS flagship sedan exemplifies our new approach to create amazing experiences for our customers, and ignite their emotions through innovation that promises a truly engaging driving experience.” “We express our deepest gratitude to our customers in the region for extending their constant support in the form of their utmost appreciation for Lexus models, which has encouraged us to push the boundaries of automobile design and engineering. We are confident that the LS flagship sedan will resonate strongly with luxury automotive enthusiasts in the region for whom driving is an emotionally enriching experience,” added Yoshitsugu. The LS is built on the new Lexus Global Architecture―Luxury (GA-L) platform, which ensures a low center of gravity and optimum weight distribution, contributing to the car’s essential stability and handling agility, which in turn, deliver increased driver rewards. The high rigidity of the chassis allows the new multilink suspension to be tuned to achieve an excellent handling performance and the supreme comfort for which the LS is renowned. The 2018 LS Hybrid takes an entirely different approach than the previous LS Hybrid model. The new state-of-the-art Multi Stage Hybrid System combines a naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with two electric motor/generators and uses a compact,

lightweight lithium-ion battery. The combined system output of the internal combustion engine with the electric traction system is 354 hp. The new system is based on the electronically controlled Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) transmission of Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive, coupled with an all-new four-speed automatic gearset at the output stage. The two systems work together to expand the overall range of gearing and increase operation of the V6 engine across a wider speed range than previous hybrids. The result is impressive fuel economy, low emissions, and excellent on-road performance that will satisfy even the most demanding driving enthusiast. The new LS will be available also with two engine options; a 3.5-liter V6 engine naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle producing 311 hp and 380 Nm of torque, and a newly developed 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine producing 416 hp and 600 Nm of torque, and both mated to the firstever 10-speed automatic transmission for a premium passenger car.

Spot Monitor (BSM), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BA), among many others. Furthermore, the 2018 LS debuts two new 19-inch wheel designs and three 20-inch wheel designs, two of which are also new, and feature run-flat tires designed to elevate vehicle and ride comfort. The 20inch premium wheels employ a brilliant appearance created using an electroplating technique known as sputtering. All the new wheel designs feature a hollow rim structure that helps reduce resonant sounds generated by the tires. The LS will be available in 13 distinctive exterior colors, including two new developed colors; Manganese Luster and Sonic Agate, which represent boldness, luminosity, and sophistication, to let customers express their individuality. On the other hand, the interior comes in a total of nine color schemes with nine choices of interior trim.

A common thread across all the LS models is Omotenashi; the concept of Japanese hospitality, and the all-new LS flagship sedan is no exception. In terms of a luxury automobile, it translates into adopting a human-focused approach to the vehicle, taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, and attending to their comfort in every way possible. Some of the features through which the new LS achieves this are front and rear seats with multiple power adjustments, heating, cooling, and massage functions, rear seat arrangement that includes an extending leg ottoman and the most generous legroom of any LS generation, and a rear seat entertainment system with 11.6-inch screen auto-tilts to the optimum viewing angle. As a flagship vehicle, pioneering a new age and aiming for the best safety performance in the world, the new LS unstintingly employs the latest safety technologies including the brand’s innovative Lexus Safety System+, in addition to a comprehensive array of safety features to protect its occupants, such as 14 SRS airbags, Blind

INTRODUCING THE NEW VANTAGE: THE SUCCESSOR TO A TRUE SPORTING DYNASTY

A

n evocative name for a magnificent bloodline of thoroughbred sports cars. For seven decades the heartbeat of Aston Martin’s purest models, the Vantage nameplate has been worn by some true icons. First used in 1951 on a high-output engine option for the DB2, Vantage was quickly established as a model in its own right. Highlights include the William Towns-designed V8 Vantage, spectacular twin-supercharged V600 Le Mans and the much-loved V8 Vantage. Today this formidable sporting dynasty is poised to hit new heights with the introduction of the new Vantage. A spectacular new Aston Martin sports car demands a bold and distinctive design language. Pure, sculptural forms create an athletic, predatory stance, while the minimal front and rear overhangs, muscular flanks and broad haunches express the agility

18 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS and dynamism inherent within the car. New head and tail lights form dramatic new signatures giving the Vantage unmistakable road presence and contribute to a strong and individual identity within the growing Aston Martin model range. Aerodynamic performance was central to the Vantage design concept: the front splitter directs airflow underneath the car, where a system of fences channels cooling air where it is needed, and also ensures the rear diffuser is fed with clean airflow. The design of the diffuser creates an area of low pressure air, while simultaneously preventing turbulence generated by the rear wheels from disrupting the flow of air exiting centrally from beneath the rear of the car.

The design story continues inside the Vantage, with a dynamic and focused sports car cockpit that rejects long, fluid curves in favour of sharp, focused lines denoting the more aggressive nature of the car. A high waist interior theme and lower driving position creates a more immersive driving experience, and contributes to significant gains in occupant space and significant improvement in headroom compared with the outgoing Vantage. A combination of rotary and toggle style controls have been used for their tactile and intuitive functionality. Likewise, the PRND transmission buttons have been moved into a triangular formation so as to cluster major controls into clearly defined zones. The interior also offers generous stowage space, with useable room behind the seats and generous double-tier storage areas.

Together with the new side gills, which have been integrated into the body surface and bleed air pressure out from the front wheel arches, and the pronounced upswept rear deck lid, the Vantage generates a significant level of downforce - a rarity on any production car and a first for a core production Aston Martin model.

The heart of the Vantage is Aston Martin’s potent new alloy, 4-litre twinturbo V8 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible for optimal centre-of-gravity and perfect 50:50 weight distribution, this high performance, high efficiency engine returns a CO2 figure of *245g/ km yet develops 510PS at 6000rpm and 685Nm from 2000-5000rpm.

CAPABLE OF ACCELERATING FROM 0 TO 60MPH IN 3.5 SECONDS AND ON TO A MAXIMUM SPEED OF 195MPH

20 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

With a dry weight of 1530kg this gives the Vantage formidable power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratios - something vividly demonstrated whenever the throttle is squeezed. Detailed tuning of the induction, exhaust and engine management systems has given the Vantage a truly intoxicating character and soundtrack. The Vantage deploys its impressive power and torque to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 195mph, it employs a sophisticated suite of integrated electronic systems to offer maximum control and driver enjoyment. These include Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Torque Vectoring. The speeddependent electric power steering has 2.4 turns lock-to-lock for an outstanding combination of responsiveness and precise, intuitive control. For the first time on an Aston Martin the new Vantage also features an Electronic Rear Differential (E-Diff). This differential is linked to the car’s electronic stability control system, so it can understand the car’s behaviour, and react accordingly to direct the engine’s power to the relevant wheel. Unlike a conventional LSD, it can go from fully open to 100% locked in a matter of milliseconds. At higher speeds, the Electronic Differential’s speed and sensitivity of response enables the system to take very fine control of the car’s dynamic behaviour. It makes the car feel much more composed both in terms of its straight-line stability and its cornering performance, providing the driver with increased levels of confidence to explore and enjoy the car’s capabilities to the full. The chassis is an evolution of the latest generation bonded aluminium structure first seen on the DB11, though some 70 per cent of the structure’s components are new for Vantage. Balance, strength, rigidity and weight efficiency were all priorities in the new Vantage design, as was handling purity and consistency. Highlights of the chassis include a solidly mounted rear subframe for an enhanced feeling of direct connection for the driver, new Pirelli P Zero tyres developed specifically for new Vantage and the latest generation Adaptive Damping System which incorporates Skyhook technology and offers the choice of Sport, Sport Plus and Track modes.

Thanks to full integration of engine, transmission, E-Diff, Dynamic Torque Vectoring, Dynamic Stability Control, Adaptive Damping and the electric power steering systems, each mode optimises every area of the car as one. With each step the Vantage gains in agility and responsiveness, its character becoming progressively sharper, more vocal and more exciting. This is the essence of the Vantage driving experience - a car that’s never less than connected and engaging with the breadth of capability to revel in challenging roads and bare its teeth on track. The Vantage features a high level of standard equipment, including keyless start/stop, tyre pressure monitoring system, parking distance display, park assist and front and rear parking sensors. The In-Car Entertainment system - controlled and viewed via a centrally mounted 8” LCD screen - comprises of the Aston Martin Audio System, Bluetooth® audio and phone streaming, iPod®, iPhone® and USB playback and an integrated satellite navigation system. Being an Aston Martin, the new Vantage also features a high level of craftsmanship, evidenced by flawless paintwork, luxurious Alcantara® and leather upholstery and the levels of finish optimised through the use of tactile natural materials of the highest quality. There is also extensive scope for personalisation via a generous choice of options. These include forged alloy wheels in a variety of finishes, Sports Plus Collection (comprising Sports Plus seats and Sports steering wheel), carbon fibre interior and exterior detailing and a Premium Audio System. Aston Martin President Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andy Palmer said: “It speaks volumes for the outgoing Vantage that it is the single most successful model in Aston Martin’s history. Creating a worthy successor has been a challenge to relish and a huge source of motivation. I’m enormously excited by what we’ve created: a new Vantage that’s more explicit in looks and intent, wrapping heart-pounding performance and dazzling dynamics into an everyday usable package. A true sports car with a sharper look and a keener dynamic edge, the new Vantage is the Aston Martin pure driving machine enthusiasts have been waiting for.”

LEXUS LC 500 TAKES FIRST TWO PODIUM PLACES IN PENULTIMATE ROUND OF SUPER GT500 SERIES FIVE OF THE TOP SIX PLACES IN THE RACE WERE HELD BY LEXUS LC 500 TEAMS‎

G

iving it the upper hand in the 2017 AUTOBACS SUPER GT championship, Lexus landed a ‎stunning pole-to-win victory, the fifth of the season, in the penultimate round of the SUPER GT500 series, held recently at the ‎Chang International Circuit in Thailand. Driven by Ryo Hirakawa and Nick Cassidy, the #37 KeePer TOM’S LC 500 finished first, followed by the #6 WAKO’s 4CR LC 500 in second place. The Lexus team KeePer TOM’S now leads the Team Ranking of the series with 87 points, while Hirakawa and Cassidy lead the Driver Ranking with 69 points. The latest achievement the team sealed in the only round of the season to have hosted overseas ‎gave the team and its drivers significant points advantages in the championship titles.‎ Takayuki Yoshitsugu, Chief Representative, Middle East and North Africa Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “We congratulate the Lexus teams on their victory in the penultimate round of the season and for bringing the championship title ever closer within our reach. This race demonstrated the skill and determination of our drivers and the engineering excellence of our cars as they had to swiftly adapt to changing weather. While participating in these events, we focus on testing our cars under extreme conditions on racetracks and bringing the best of Lexus’ amazing engineering and design to stimulate our customers’ emotions.” Yoshitsugu added: “To our fans, we express our gratitude for their immense support throughout the races and for being an inspiring force behind our continued success.” The unpredictable weather made it difficult for the teams to judge which tire compound to use. As ‎the rain stopped just ahead of the start, only three of the 15 teams among the top-level GT500 class ‎opted for slicks while others went for wet weather tires.‎

Due to the wet track, the officials opted for a controlled, three-lap start led by the safety car. Traffic and 30-degree temperatures eventually erased the wet tire advantage, but by the ninth round, the three cars on slicks were way down the order, having set lap times approximately 20 seconds slower than those on wets. By the time the last cars returned to the race after the first round of pit stops, the #37 KeePer TOM’S LC 500 had resumed its lead – a feat it repeated in the second stop for the driver change from Nick Cassidy to Ryo Hirakawa. By this time, considerable gaps had opened between all the competitors, leaving no car to challenge the insurmountable #37 Lexus for the lead. Smaller gaps in the middle order delivered further excitement as the remaining five Lexus LC 500 teams also pushed hard to achieve. With just two laps to go, an engine issue for the #12 competitor car in third place improved the ratio of LC 500s in the upper order. By the time the chequered flag fell, not only had the #37 KeePer TOM’S car secured

its second victory of the season, but five of the top six places were held by Lexus LC 500 models. The KeePer TOM’S team, therefore, goes into the final round as the championship leader, six points ahead of fellow Lexus team #6 WAKO’s 4CR in second place. This positioning is also mirrored in the drivers’ championship, where Cassidy and Hirakawa are six points ahead of #6 WAKO’s 4CR drivers, Kazuya Oshima and Andrea Caldarelli. Based on these standings after round seven, the probability of Lexus securing both the teams’ and drivers’ championship is extremely high. Nick Cassidy said: “I’m overwhelmed. Today was an amazing day, and I can’t thank the team and other parties enough. The result was important, but at the same time, I think this was one of the best GT races I have ever done. The power was really, really good and our choice of the wet tires gave me enough of an advantage to stay ahead of the cars behind,

so I didn’t need to take risks in the traffic. After handing over to Ryo, he did an amazing job, as he always does. I am now really looking forward to Motegi, especially with no success ballast.” “We achieved the best result,” said Ryo Hirakawa. He added: “Honestly, I was very nervous before the start and worried about which tire to choose, but the pace of the car in the rain was good. The timing to change to dry tires determined the race. With maybe some luck, we were able to get in the pit at the perfect time. The pit work was quick, and my out laps were nice and clean. After that, I never looked back and focused on not making mistakes and keeping the rank we were in. It was a great race, which has put us in a good position for the final round. All cars will lose the weight handicap at the final race in Motegi, so I hope to run another race as I did in the first round of the season.”

NEWS title. The 2017 AUTOBACS SUPER GT series ‎has proven to be a challenging one with the unpredictable changing weather, which placed the whole team’s skill to the test. Strategic thinking coupled with years of experience and amazing Lexus engineering has proven to be a successful combination for a victory. We would like to thank our dedicated fans for their unrelenting support to the teams throughout all the qualifying races.” The start of the 53-lap, 250-km Motegi race saw the cars in grid positions one and two collide before the end of the formation lap, but the damage was relatively minor and the rolling start carried on as scheduled. While the lead car maintained its composure and continued to create a healthy advantage, the second-placed #6 Lexus LC 500 had lost momentum during the disturbance and was passed by three cars in quick succession – all within the initial few corners. First of these was Nick Cassidy in the #37 Lexus LC 500, who immediately stole into second, while James Rossiter in the #36 Lexus LC 500 also capitalized on the early upset to leapfrog from seventh into fifth. Further incidents within the midfield allowed the cars in positions one and two to create a comfortable breathing space. Cassidy was the first within the field to pit, initiating a stream of driver changeovers that extended from lap 21 to 35. By the time the final car had pitted, the #37 Lexus LC 500 ‎was returned to second place with Hirakawa poised to bring it home. Despite running into many delays and challenging moments while overtaking backmarkers, the top three runners maintained their positions for the remaining 30 laps. A second-place finish was enough for KeePer TOM’S to secure both the drivers’ and teams’ championships – the team’s first SUPER GT titles since 2009. At 23 years of age, both Hirakawa and Cassidy are now the youngest drivers to have won the championship. Ryo Hirakawa said: “I thought that if we got this championship title, I would go wild, but I was just so happy when I got the chequered flag. We won this title because the whole team came together and worked well with no mistakes, so I just want to express my appreciation to everyone.” Nick Cassidy said: “All I can say is that I am relieved as well. This is only my second season in the GT500 class, but the team put its trust in me and I worked hard to live up to that trust. All year it has been a season of holding back when we needed to hold back and pushing hard when we needed to push. The strategy for this race was to conserve the car and get enough points, but it went well and was a good race.”

MCLAREN AUTOMOTIVE EXPANDS CUSTOMER-FOCUSED MOTORSPORT OFFERING

M

cLaren Automotive, the British creator of luxury sports cars and supercars, is to expand its race-winning activities in GT racing with a number of new initiatives. Headlining these is the announcement that a new 720S GT3 race car will join the successful 570S GT4, and this new model will begin testing next year for launch with customer teams in 2019. To serve customers engaging with the sport in the best possible way, McLaren Automotive is appointing a network of specialist motorsport retailers who will retail road and track products alongside each other. Also from next year, owners will be able to compete in a one-make GT series. Finally, the company will be helping to nurture young motorsport talent with the launch of a Driver Development Programme. The actions are all designed to bring McLaren’s customers even closer to the action than ever before – crucial for a brand born on the racetrack, as McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt, explained: “McLaren is built on racing and providing our growing family of customers with unique and exhilarating driving experiences. It therefore makes sense for us to unveil a dedicated, widened motorsport programme designed to 36 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

support and enable more of our customers to focus on enjoying the thrill of pushing our cars on the track. The 720S GT3 will provide a stunning race-going addition to our Super Series product family and drivers will now be able to hone their skills under expert guidance backed-up by our technicians at the circuit and our motorsport retailers away from it.” As the first element in the refreshed programme, and building on the recent successes with both the 12C GT3 and 650S GT3 cars, McLaren Automotive is to develop and build a GT3 race car based on the awardwinning McLaren 720S. Two concept sketches have now been released. The 720S GT3 will benefit from race and championship-winning experience and knowledge accrued by McLaren during six seasons of motorsport activities. Following an intensive development programme in the 2018 season, the 720S GT3 will make its competitive debut with customer teams in the 2019 season and will be fully compliant with GT3 regulations and eligible to compete in all GT3 race series globally. The MonoCage II carbon fibre structure at the heart of the 720S road car provides the foundation for a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive car set to appeal to professional and budding drivers alike. the power source, through a six-speed, sequential shift motorsport transmission. The aerodynamically-optimised bodywork of the 720S GT3 will be formed from both composite and lightweight carbon fibre, with a bespoke aerodynamic package. The suspension will comprise tried and tested adjustable dampers and coil-over springs, front and rear. The 720S GT3 race car follows on from the 650S GT3 which has proved itself as a race winner and world-beater on the highest GT stages globally following its launch in 2014. It has scored titles on all four continents on which it has campaigned, including the Asian Le Mans Series, Australian GT championship, the Bathurst 12 Hour, Blancpain Endurance Cup and Pirelli World Challenge. This was a development from the original 12C GT3 which was launched in 2010. After an intense development programme throughout the 2011 season, the 12C GT3 debuted with customer teams a year later, winning 19 races, a further 19 podiums and pole position for the legendary Spa 24h race. To support a further part of the expansion plans for customer racing and track activities across the globe, McLaren Automotive has also confirmed the first details of retailers approved to retail the brand’s motorsport products. Appointed from the existing McLaren retailer network, initially 10 retailers will offer motorsport support and service with the first such retailer to be announced being McLaren Glasgow, the recipient of the brand’s retailer of the year award. Alongside Glasgow in Europe will be Zurich; North America will be represented by Dallas, Newport Beach, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Scottsdale and Toronto, while the Asia-Pacific region will have representation in both Melbourne and the spiritual home of McLaren, New Zealand, with the Auckland retailer.

“Motorsport retailers represent an important milestone for McLaren Automotive – strengthening a core part of the business, and bringing the world of road and track models even closer together,” said Jolyon Nash, Executive Director, Global Sales and Marketing, McLaren Automotive. “Motorsport has been, and will continue to be, a core value to the McLaren brand which truly was born on the track, and this runs through the DNA of each and every product that we hand assemble.” The company has also unveiled plans to extend its existing popular Pure McLaren customer track day series by creating the Pure McLaren-GT race series that will race in 2018 at iconic European racing circuits. The new series is aimed at McLaren owners who already have extensive track driving experience and are looking to take their first steps in the racing world in a controlled and familiar environment with the support of McLaren motorsport experts that allows customers to tap into over five decades of racing know-how. Open exclusively to individual McLaren owners with the minimum of an International D grade licence, they will be able to take advantage of a full ‘arrive and drive’ package with all cars maintained and run by McLaren engineers and technicians, freeing owners up to concentrate on their driving. More details, including venues and dates for the new Pure McLaren-GT series, will be announced in due course. McLaren is as committed as ever to developing future racing talent. Alongside new cars will be a driver development programme designed to nurture a new generation of GT racers.

To kick-start the McLaren Automotive Driver Development Programme, four promising British drivers have been selected from an existing stable of driving talent connected with McLaren who will compete in pairs driving two 570S GT4 cars during 2018. The Programme will identify talent and create a breeding ground for future McLaren Factory Drivers by providing them with motorsport education and driver support. That support includes being assigned a professional mentor from McLaren’s team of drivers, fitness and nutrition assessments and advice and PR, marketing and sponsorship support and guidance. Drivers will be regularly assessed and evaluated on their performance with a tailored programme developed to ensure each delivers their best performance every time they compete. This will include simulator access and working with the engineering teams to better understand telemetry data and race strategy. Jordan Albert (21), Charlie Fagg (18), Michael O’Brien (22) and Lewis Proctor (21) will each have a driver coach from the roster of Pure McLaren driver coaches and share a driver mentor in Rob Bell who joins McLaren as Factory Driver.

In 2018, a competition will be launched for drivers to participate in a 2019 International Driver Development Programme run by McLaren Automotive. More details will be announced next year. “The McLaren Automotive Driver Development Programme has been established to help gifted young drivers realise their motorsport ambitions: if they have the talent, regardless of their background, we want to be there to guide them and foster their racing skills. These drivers will be our future in endurance racing and in the four we have selected this year, we believe that with McLaren’s support all of them are potential GT championship winners. I am also delighted that Rob Bell joins the team as a Factory Driver for the 2018 season, as his knowledge and experience will be of enormous benefit to the Driver Development Programme. More than this, he will ensure that the 720S GT3 car builds on the success of our previous models in this class and is capable of competing against – and beating – the best that the GT world has to offer,” added McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt. Only in its seventh year, McLaren Automotive now forms the largest part of the newly combined sports and technology-based McLaren Group and has a workforce of around 2,100.

he new all-electric Renault ZOE Long Range model has arrived in the Middle East. The latest version of Renault’s most popular 100% electric vehicle now boasts a record driving range of 300 Kilometres (real driving conditions) on a single charge – double the distance of the previous generation ZOE model. Renault was the first car maker to introduce a 100% electric car to the Middle East, and has since been blazing the trail for pure-electric, zero emissions mobility in the region. The new model, launched this week, features Renault’s new Z.E. (zero emissions) 40 battery – a 41kWh unit delivering the longest driving range of any mass-market electric vehicle on sale today.

The ZOE is a compact 5-door city car. With sporty and dynamic styling you have to look closely to see the car is 100% electric. The new Z.E. 40 battery in the new ZOE Long Range model has been developed in partnership with LG Chem and uses cutting-edge highenergy density lithium-ion technology. The unit has been engineered to increase storage capacity without making the battery bigger or significantly heavier. The battery integration in the vehicle, new air circulation system and electronic management system maintains the battery’s temperature at a consistent level; making the car economical to run, even in very high temperatures. Whilst the ZOE Long Range benefits from extra capacity there has been no impact on charging times. ‘Topping up’ the battery for just 30 minutes provides an additional 80 kilometres of range. With the charging infrastructure in the Middle East growing, in Dubai, new initiatives have been introduced by the Supreme Energy Council meaning EV owners can now charge for free at any public charging station until 2019, as well as benefit from an array of other benefits including free parking*. The ZOE is the perfect blend of practicality, affordability and most importantly, the freedom to drive without the worry of running out of power. This new model cements our position as true pioneers of electric mobility, not only here in the Middle East, but across the world.” Renault recently announced its ‘Drive The Future’ strategy – a six-year plan which will see the brand maintain its EV leadership across the globe with the introduction of eight new pure-electric vehicles and 12 new electrified models by 2022.

MCLAREN SENNA THE ULTIMATE ROAD-LEGAL TRACK CAR

68 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

The McLaren Senna has been designed, engineered and developed with single-minded purpose: to be the ultimate McLaren track-concentrated car for the road. Legalised for road use, but not sanitised to suit it, the new Ultimate Series deliberately compromises McLaren’s trademark breadth of supercar daily usability; instead it provides the purest connection between driver and car, to deliver the most intense circuit experience of any road McLaren. The technical recipe is classic McLaren Automotive supercar, a pedigree established and earned in the short time elapsed since the pioneering sports and supercar company was founded in 2010, but taken to another level entirely in the McLaren Senna. Ultra-lightweight construction, with carbon fibre chassis and body panels. Mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged V8 McLaren

engine. Rear wheel drive. Sophisticated race-derived suspension that delivers an unparalleled blend of control and dynamic balance. Electro-hydraulic steering that rewards accurate inputs and gives the purest feedback. And two seats – but with absolute focus on the importance of the one that the driver occupies. The carbon fibre Monocage III chassis that forms the core of the McLaren Senna is a further development of the structure that underpins the McLaren 720S and the strongest monocoque ever built by McLaren for a road-legal vehicle. Every body panel is made from carbon fibre, in line with a relentless focus on the weight of every individual component that has resulted in the McLaren Senna being the lightest road-legal McLaren since the iconic F1 road car, at just 1,198kg*. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 10 69

MERCEDES-AMG C63 S REIGNS SUPREME By: Tarek Hawchar

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 10 73

RE VIE W

n the world of small performance sedans, nothing reigns supreme as much as the AMG C63 S does. If you’re in the market for such a vehicle, you might as well get the best one. Trouble is, this car promises so much that it almost seems like it can’t possibly be real. It’s been overhyped to the point where I’m even starting to question if it’s real. What I’m saying is, can the C63 S really be as good as the stats and everyone else claims? To find out we took one for a test drive in Qatar, testing it in the city as well as an empty stretch of road in the North. Exterior Visually, the C63 S is a lot more appealing than any of the other German offerings (M3, RS4). You may disagree, but the combination of smooth lines and curved edges really works. The M3 is a lot sharper in some areas, but not necessarily in a good way. The BMW looks more aftermarket than the Benz does, especially with the massive flared arches front and back. It has a certain boy-racer feel, let’s just put it that way. Although you can tell this is no ordinary C-Class either, it’s a lot more subtle. The attention to detail seems to be on a completely different level as well.

74 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

Our example came finished in brilliant matt gray, giving the car that aggressive edge without becoming too obnoxious. The front fascia is arguably its best side, but I really like how to entire roof slopes down to meet that rear end. It hasn’t got a massive spoiler ruining the looks, and even though there are big quad tail pipes out back, they’re not sticking out too much. As a design exercise, I genuinely prefer the C63 over any of the other competitors. It manages to give off a luxurious and sporty vibe at the same time, something neither of its two German rivals can. Although it’s available in over a dozen different colors, matt grey is the one to go for. You can opt for the traditional white or black, but grey really suits the car’s character. My personal tip would be to avoid getting the side stripes since they mess with its lines. It doesn’t have to be shouty because that’s not the C63’s thing. Keep it clean and simple and you can’t go wrong, I promise.

IT MANAGES TO GIVE OFF A LUXURIOUS AND SPORTY VIBE AT THE SAME TIME

REVIEW

Interior Mercedes is in an interior sweet spot at the moment. Most of the cabin is identical to the standard C-Class, which is to say brilliant. It utilizes the same design on the dash, the center console and most of the door panels, but obviously you get more of everything. Mercedes hasn’t spared any cost in using high-quality materials throughout the entire cabin. We’re talking expensive wood, genuine leather, brushed metallic inserts… the whole package. The fit and finish is bespoke too, it feels like it could last several decades which I’m sure it actually can.

For a performance sedan, that’s not an easy thing to accomplish.Elsewhere it’s pretty much standard C-Class. There’s just as much space both inside the cabin and in the trunk. If you want you can specify over several dozen different options, but even as base the thing comes loaded. Unless you absolutely want to have everything, you can just spec the basic things and keep the cost down.

Being the flagship AMG model, the C63 S gets a custom instrument cluster with the dials turned up to 11, a unique AMG-badged steering wheel with a center stripe, and special performance seats. They offer immense lateral support but more importantly, lower the feeling of center of gravity by placing you lower in the cabin. It’s as though you’re sitting inside the car rather than on top of it.

RE VIE W

Engine and Performance As great as it is both inside and out, the C63 S’ crowning jewel is its engine. When Mercedes dropped the 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 along with the last-gen C63, we all thought it was the end of the crazy AMG era. Turns out, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Mercedes has shoehorned the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 from the AMG GT in the small sedan platform, with minimal intrusion. The ‘base’ model makes 469 horsepower and 649 Nm of torque, but S variants like the one we’re driving put out an astonishing 503 horsepower and 699 Nm of torque. Although the small increase in power is nice, that torque figure absolutely dwarfs anything this segment has to offer. The M3, by comparison, makes 550 Nm of torque. The figures speak for themselves. The sprint to 100 km/h takes 3.8 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 290 km/h. The way it gets there really boggles your mind however. It’s so effortless and smooth that you don’t realize the speed you’re doing until you look down at the speedometer. On the road, the torque figure dominates the entire driving experience. Put your foot down and the thing just takes off. Any speed, any gear, and any revs. It feels electric in that sense.

699 Nm OF TORQUE ABSOLUTELY DWARFS ANYTHING THIS SEGMENT HAS TO OFFER

The sound however is anything but electric. If anything, the new car sounds even better than the old one because you get the added pops and turbo spools you just didn’t with the last naturally-aspirated unit. At its core though, this is still a muscle car. In an era where everyone is downsizing both in cylinders and in displacement, Mercedes is the last of the German manufacturers to offer a V8 performance sedan. If that’s not reason to celebrate I don’t know what is.

[ 78 ISSUE 10 / maqinaonline.com

The chassis is predictable and neutral. Old AMGs were incredibly tail happy and difficult to drive quick. The M cars always had them pinned in that respect. Not so with the newest C63 S. It’s got loads of grip and finding the limits of it is impossible on the public road. It’s still a hooligan at heart though and will light up the rears with no issue. It’s a civilized hooligan now however, and you get to choose your moments.

BMW 530i AN EVOLUTION RATHER THAN A REVOLUTION

BY: TAREK HAWCHAR

RE VIE W

Although sedans, especially large ones, are not as popular as SUVs or hatchbacks these days, the case for a luxurious midsize limo still stands. Point in case, the BMW 5-Series. If you want a comfortable and luxurious limo that still handles, the 5-Series is your safest bet. The A6, even with its Quattro is far too blunt and disconnected, and the E-Class is only now starting to catch up to the BMW. With the most recent seventh generation of the 5-Series, BMW has once again reinvented the entire segment. The new car is supposedly still the benchmark all other manufacturers have to aim for, but is that true? To find out, we took one for a road test on Doha roads. Read on to find out how we got on with it.

It manages to look bold and understated at the same time

Exterior Visually, the new 5-Series is more of an evolution rather than a revolution compared to its predecessor. The styling isn’t wildly different, but you can tell it’s new even if you’re not a massive car enthusiast. I like how BMW still keeps their models unique and somewhat original. The differences between the 3-Series, the 5-Series and the 7-Series styling are far greater than anything you’d find over at Mercedes or Audi. The C-Class is incredibly similar to the E-Class, a car which in turn closely resembles a smaller S-Class. The Bemeers are much better thought out, and I quite like that. Up front, the 5-Series gets redesigned headlights which feature LED technology, as well as bigger kidney grilles. The headlights are connected to the enormous grilles, but that gives the car a nice, aggressive appearance. I’m not particularly fond of big front ends, but the 5-Series is an exception. It’s a handsome car, I’ll give it that. It manages to look bold and understated at the same time. I don’t say that about a lot of cars nowadays. The side profile isn’t particularly exciting, though I do like the high waistline. It gives the car a low and sleek appearance, which when matched with the right wheels, delivers a killer combination. The estate car is, to my eyes, just as gorgeous, but that’s entirely subjective of course. The rear end is my least favorite angle. The taillights just aren’t that different to a 3-Series, or even a 7-Series, which is a real shame. The rest of the car is so nicely put together, that BMW could have done something about the rear fascia as well.

Everything you see, touch and smell feels expensive and premium

]

Interior This being a BMW, the interior is nothing short of superb. The cabin reeks of quality as soon as you get in it. Everything you see, touch and smell feels expensive and premium. It’s been thoroughly updated, though I never felt that the old 5-Series’ cabin lacked anything. BMW has even attempted to add a little flare to the cabin with bolder design, though I’d say Mercedes still has them pinned when it comes to styling. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just doesn’t feel special. The moment you sit in the seat though, you forget everything I just said. The driving position is spot on. You sit nice and low, giving you that ‘one with the car’ feeling we always mention. The driving position is ideal whether you’re just doing the daily drive or going for a spirited cruise. The three-spoke steering wheel is new, fitting nicely in the hands, but I prefer the old one if I’m honest. There’s a ton of head and legroom, meaning you can easily fit five adults in the car with comfort to spare. The updated iDrive is now faster and a lot more intuitive, something the old system lacked. You can now get used to it in a matter of minutes rather than days. It’s a lot more accessible without losing its adjustability we always liked about it. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 10 89

ave you ever wondered what makes a car luxurious and truly outstanding? Plush materials and superb build quality spring immediately to mind, but I reckon it’s a bit more than that. Mercedes’ S-Class and BMW’s 7-Series are luxurious limousines in their own right, but they can never truly gain ‘exotic’ status. Even in AMG and M trim, they’re still cars produced by mainstream manufacturers. The real step up between a luxurious car and something truly breathtaking happens just above that. THE PHANTOM IS THE EPITOME OF EFFORTLESS DESIGN AND STYLE

To find out if the big Roller can deliver, we visited Vitznau, Switzerland, where we were handed over the keys of a brand-new 2018 Phantom. The amazing scenery of Lake Lucerne blew us away as soon as we arrived, and that was before we even saw the car. Genuine Elegance in Motion I think that a Phantom can never look bad or ugly. Every color seems to suit it, even the more outlandish ones. However, when presented with a two-tone Premier Silver and Gunmetal example, you simply exclude all other options from the table and just lust after this combination. The more Rolls changes the Phantom, the more it stays the same it seems. And I mean that in the best way possible. The Phantom is the epitome of effortless design and style. It never looks like it’s trying too hard, like it’s trying to be something it’s not. It looks expensive and utterly gorgeous from every angle. It won’t wow you with aggressive styling or flared arches, but rather take your breath away and amaze you with incredible attention to detail. Even sitting still, it looks like it’s in motion. At 100 km/h or 200 km/h, it never seems to be putting up a whole lot of effort. It’s as effortless as a car can get, and I haven’t encountered another vehicle which can offer you the same. Yes, I can include Bentley in that, since the Roller isn’t trying to be sporty in the slightest bit.

IT’S SO QUIET YOU’RE NOT AWARE IT’S RUNNING MOST OF THE TIME ” Effortless Performance Although no Rolls-Royce is or should be sporty, some level of performance is always to be expected. To increase efficiency as well as drivability, Rolls has ditched the old naturallyaspirated V12 in favor of a brand-new twin-turbo unit, though it still retains the same displacement and cylinder configuration. The power figures are as follows: 571 horsepower and 900 NM of torque at just 1,700 rpm. On the road, that big V12 completely dictates the way the Phantom propels itself forward. It’s so quiet you’re not aware it’s running most of the time. The fact that it’s as smooth as butter has something to do with how refined it feels too. Put your foot down though and you’ll be surprised by the amount of poke it has. The sprint to 100 km/h takes 5.3 seconds and flat out it will do 250 km/h (electronically limited).

The power delivery is linear and progressive though. It feels fast in an effortless sort of way. You see the speedometer climbing but you don’t feel scared. More than anything you’re fascinated that it can pick up speed so quickly. Rolls-Royce is proud of their new self-leveling air suspension system, and they have every right to be so. It would be a cliché to say that it rides like it’s on a cushion of air, but you having to be in it to really feel it and understand it. It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever been in. It doesn’t just absorb the bumps and road imperfections, but completely irons them out. Nothing phases it, and I do mean absolutely nothing. You can go over a pothole the size of the wheel and you would barely notice it. I’m exaggerating a bit here of course, but you get what I’m trying to say.

This is a car that doesn’t have to be driven to be enjoyed. In fact, it’s much better as a limo you’re chauffeured in rather than a driving experience. You get to sample the superb materials and the incredible attention to detail a lot more. A truly jaw-dropping car in every regard.

FERRARI 288GTO

Ferrari 288 GTO is an exotic homologation of the Ferrari 308 GTB produced from 1984 through 1986, designated GT for Gran Turismo and O for Omologato (homologation in Italian). The Ferrari GTO was built to compete in the new Group B Race series and a minimum of 200 cars were required for homologation. However as only Ferrari and Porsche, with their 959, entered, the series was soon abandoned leaving just Group B Rally championship. The Porsche 959 (as the Porsche 961) only raced three times in Group B, but the 288 GTO never raced and all 272 cars built remained purely road cars. Some of the Ferrari 288 GTO’s styling features were first displayed on a 308 GTB design exercise by Pininfarina shown at the 1977 Geneva Salon.

This included the deep front spoiler, fender flares, rear lip spoiler, front lid radiator cooling louvers and quadruple driving lights. The GTO was based on the mid-engined, rear wheel drive 308 GTB (which has a 3.0 litre V8 engine). The “288” refers to the GTO’s 2.8 litre V8 engine as it used a de-bored (by 1 mm) V8 with twin IHI turbochargers, intercoolers, and Weber-Marelli fuel injection. The 2855 cc engine capacity was dictated by the FIA’s requirement for a Turbocharged engine’s capacity to be multiplied by 1.4. This gave the GTO a theoretical engine capacity of 3997 cc, just under the Group B limit of 4.0 litres.Unlike the 308’s 2926 cc engine, the GTO’s 2855 cc engine was mounted longitudinally, using the 308’s rear boot space. This was necessary to make room for the twin turbochargers and intercoolers.

The racing transmission was mounted to the rear of the longitudinal engine moving the rear differential and wheels aft. As a result the wheelbase was110 mm (4.3 in) longer at 2,450 mm (96 in). The track was also widened to accommodate wider wheels and tires (Goodyear NCT 225/50VR16 tires mounted on 8 x 16” Speedline wheels at the front and 255/50VR16 mounted on 10 x 16” wheels at the rear) to provide increased cornering and braking performance and the ability to apply 400 hp (298 kW) and 366 lb·ft (496 N·m) of torque to the ground. The GTO was an impressive performer with 0-60 mph times in the upper 4 second range. Ferrari claimed 0-125 mph (201 km/h) in 15 seconds flat.

Top speed was 189 mph (304 km/h), making it the first street-legal production car to reach 300 km/h (186 mph). Ferrari also built five 288 GTO Evoluzione models with more aggressive and aerodynamic body styling and increased power. The engine in the Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione originally put out as much as 650 hp (480 kW). With weight of 940 kg (2,072 lb) the car had a top speed of 225 mph (362 km/h). These cars form the clearest visual link between the 288 GTO and the F40 soon to follow.Only three 288 GTO Evoluziones are still in existence, with one at the Galleria Ferrari museum in Maranello.

TIPS

Washing your beloved car the right way is an essential aspect to maintain a pristine showroom quality paint job that highlight its beauty and guaranty it is a head turner. Here are some tips on washing your car like a pro

1

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME Washing your car under sunlight or when the body is hot will make the soap and the water dry quicker increasing the chances of causing spots and water marks on the paint, therefore it is best to wash the car when the body is cold or at least under shade.

NEVER THE SAME BUCKET Before dipping a towel in the soapy water bucket, dip it in a clean water bucket to rinse off any dirt you’ve just removed from your car.

5

ONE SECTION AT A TIME After removing dirt and dust using water, apply soap at one section of the car, rinse it with water, repeat the process to the next section, then rinse the whole car with water before drying it.
