AAB LAUNCH THE ALL-NEW CAMRY 2018 The all-new Camry redefines the standard for mid-size sedans

S

etting new standards for the mid-size sedan segment in design, performance, and comfort, AAB announced today the launch of the all-new 2018 Camry in Qatar. The design of the eighth-generation Camry aims to test the limits of performance and intelligence, infusing the high-end sedan with a refined feel. The design team began with a blank slate, using Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) as the basis for the all-new platform, units, electronics, and other core components. The result is a striking emotional character, stunningly beautiful design, responsive driving, and premium ride performance. “To create something that stirs people’s soul, we have laid out the concept of a new sedan that provides fun and excitement behind the wheel,” said the chief engineer of the all-new Camry, Masato Katsumata. “In developing the next-generation Toyota Camry, we were able to start with a blank slate, which allowed us to create a true driver’s car that behaves exactly as the driver intends. The all-new 2018 Camry is an extremely balanced machine with much more excitement and emotion than any previous model. It keeps the driver and passengers comfortable and fresh on long drives while instilling them with confidence on twisty roads.” Yugo Miyamoto, Chief Representative, Middle East and North Africa Representative ‎Office, Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “We are excited to launch the all-new Camry and build on the success the car already enjoys in the region. With its exhilarating design, refined interior, stirring driving performance, cutting-edge technology, and class-leading fuel efficiency, the 2018 Camry creates a whole new value proposition while

ensuring seamless fun and excitement for driver and passengers alike and reestablish itself as the new standard in the mid-size sedan category. We extend our deepest gratitude to our customers in the region for their continued support and feedback, which inspire us to excel and develop cars that exceed their expectations.” Since its debut in 1982 and subsequent evolution over eight generations, the Camry has come to be embraced by people around the world for its excellent performance, ride quality, and its high level of Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR). The car has established an unshakeable presence in the standard mid-size sedan market – both in the Middle East and globally – with total sales surpassing 19 million units. The all-new Camry provides a comfortable and stable ride with superior handling characteristics, thanks to Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which represents an entirely new strategy to the way the company designs, engineers, and packages its vehicles. TNGA retains all of Toyota’s traditional values of superlative build quality and safety while injecting a fun driving experience that plays on all the senses. The physical manifestation is the usage of a new engine, transmission, and the GA-K platform.

LIQUID AMBER:

A STUNNING CONTEMPORARY VENEER

B

entley recently added its first new veneer in five years – Liquid Amber – to its collection. This is the luxury British brand’s seventh exclusive veneer, encapsulating its quest for the finest materials and catering to discerning customers in the Middle East and worldwide. The fact that new veneers are an extremely rare occurrence in Bentley interiors is due to the extraordinary lengths that the brand’s team of expert veneer hunters go to in order to source the finest materials in the world. Watch the new film documenting the journey the veneer hunters take to bring sustainable, unique and exquisite veneers to Bentley customers at www.bentleymedia.com. Liquid Amber: A Stunning Contemporary Veneer Liquid Amber is sourced from the American Red Gum – or American Sweet Gum tree – which grows along the rich, moist soils of the Mississippi wetlands in the south-eastern states of America. The tree’s resin is called Liquid Amber – a reference to its perfumed scent. Bentley sources only the highest quality trees, and harvests the veneer just twice a year due to restricted access across the wetlands on which it grows.

22 ISSUE 11 / maqinaonline.com

NEWS

The wood undergoes a natural smoking process, which takes several weeks, to give it a deep, rich brown lustre while maintaining the warm, red hue. The Liquid Amber veneer is then transported 4,500 miles back to the team of experts in the Bentley woodshop in Crewe, where it is examined alongside the six other carefully chosen veneers available exclusively to Bentley customers. In Pursuit of Perfection – Sourcing the Finest Materials The seven veneers Bentley offers, including eucalyptus and olive ash, are sourced by Bentley’s own veneer hunters, from countries as far apart as Canada and China. Bentley only ever uses the finest materials, sourced from the very best species, for its cars. For example, it can take a full week to review 20,000 square metres of walnut material for the burr walnut veneer.

Beyond Veneer Another new material that provides an individual statement of luxury is Bentley’s stone veneer. This innovative interior finish makes a luxurious, contemporary feature of a natural product formed over 200 million years.

Bentley typically rejects between 30 and 70 percent of veneers offered and all materials must have a high-burr density, minimal sapwood and feature no bark growth or structural defects.

The slate and quartzite stone is sustainably sourced from hand-selected quarries in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, India – a nation with an ancient and rich culture of stone masonry.

Each raw veneer is cut to a precise 0.6 mm layer, and each bundle of raw veneers must pass rigorous Bentley tests for stability in UV light and consistency from tree to tree. This process takes at least 18 months before the veneer is placed into a car.

The sections of stone are split from larger pieces and cured using glass fibre and a bespoke resin. Finally, they are shaped and finished by hand by Bentley’s world-renowned Mulliner coachbuilding team at the company’s headquarters in Crewe, England. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 23

T

he Ferrari 488 Pista, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, is the successor to Ferrari’s V8-engined special series - the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale – which have received critical acclaim for their performance and undiluted handling.

FERRARI 488 PISTA:

A BRILLIANT TRACK-DERIVED COMBINATION OF EXHILARATION AND PERFORMANCE

26 ISSUE 11 / maqinaonline.com

The Ferrari 488 Pista marks a significant step forward from the previous special series in terms of both sporty dynamics and for the level of technological carry-over from racing. The name is, in fact, a direct homage to Ferrari’s unparalleled heritage in motor sports. The car’s development evolved directly from the company’s involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship - where it has won five Manufacturers’ titles in the GTE class in the six years since the series’ inception, taking 29 out of 50 races - and 25 years’ experience in running the Ferrari Challenge one-make series.

NEWS

The Ferrari 488 Pista’s extensive weight saving solutions, along with engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic developments all derive from Ferrari’s racing cars: the 488 GTE and the 488 Challenge. The result is a car with an uncompromising mission: to offer track-like performance on and off the road, even when in the hands of non-professional drivers. Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90 kg less (1280 kg dry) which, when combined with the largest ever increase in engine power for a special series car (+50 cv), results in a new benchmark for Ferrari’s V8 sports cars. Its engine is the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history and is an extreme evolution of the turbo unit that has won the overall International Engine of the Year award titles in both 2016 and 2017. It punches out 720 cv with the highest specific output of in its class (185 cv/l) and is now lighter too, thanks to solutions adopted from the 488 Challenge, including Inconel exhaust manifolds and lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, but also thanks to additional features, such as titanium con rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums. The 488 Challenge also supplies the turbos with integrated rev sensors along with the design of the air intake line which has been moved from the flanks to the rear spoiler area to ensure a cleaner flow of air. Torque is higher than the 488 GTB at all engine speeds, delivering a feeling of consistently smooth, powerful acceleration with even faster turbo response times despite the increase in power. The engine sound is unique and unmistakably Ferrari, as such a special car warrants. Both the sound quality and the intensity are higher than the 488 GTB in all gears and at all engine speeds in proportion with the progressive increase in power. The Ferrari 488 Pista makes full use of Ferrari’s motor-sports experience for maximum aerodynamic performance even on the road. Among the racing solutions adopted is the front F1-inspired S-Duct and the design of the front diffusers which feature a ramp angle that was optimised for the 488 GTE to create strong suction for increased downforce. The underbody vortex generators have also been redesigned, and the rear diffuser incorporates the same double kink as the 488 GTE to increase the air extraction and downforce generation compared to a traditional diffuser. In addition, the rear blown spoiler is higher and longer and the shape has been optimised. The final result of all these interventions is an impressive 20% increase in downforce. The vehicle dynamics were designed to enhance driving pleasure and make the car’s full potential available to all drivers, professional or otherwise. The objective was to make the car’s performance on the limit easier to reach and control.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 27

NEWS

This was achieved by synergies between the development of the mechanical set-up and the electronic dynamic controls integrated into version 6 of the Side-Slip Angle Control system. SSC 6.0 incorporates all the following systems: E-Diff3, F1-Trac, the magnetorheological suspension (SCM) and, for the first time ever, the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer. The FDE features a world-first: it uses Ferrari software to adjust the brake pressure at the callipers. This additional level of control further fine-tunes the Ferrari 488 Pista’s performance through, and powering out of, corners making the car’s handling even more effortless, intuitive and predictable. The extra confidence the system gives means that drivers can more easily control yaw angles, even on the limit, and develop a completely symbiotic relationship with the car resulting in the perfect combination of genuinely extreme performance and driving thrills.

The design of the Ferrari 488 Pista is focussed on functional aerodynamic concepts while the cockpit is pared back in keeping with its very sporty vocation. Ferrari Design used innovative elements, such as the aerodynamic S-Duct at the front, as an opportunity to visually shorten the car’s nose, creating an original floating wing effect.

The suspension set-up is completed by new tyres developed specifically for the car by Michelin.

The car’s underlying sense of extreme purpose is also highlighted by the adoption for the first time on a Ferrari of optional new 20” carbonfibre wheel rims, while other carbon-fibre parts include the engine cover, bumpers and rear spoiler.

The racing livery colour scheme is an integral part of the design of the car and the way it dives into the S-Duct underscores the berlinetta’s compact yet imposing forms. Contrasting edging on the aerodynamic elements on the bumpers and flanks add structure to the design. The concept of the front is echoed in the dolphin-tail rear spoiler which appears suspended to provide an impression lightness and efficiency, while the rear volumes add a sense of power to the tail.

THE REAR BLOWN SPOILER IS HIGHER AND LONGER AND THE SHAPE H AS BEEN OPTIMISED.

HYUNDAI H

REVEALS ALL-NEW SECOND-GENERATION VELOSTER

32 ISSUE 11 / maqinaonline.com

yundai has unveiled its next-generation Veloster and Veloster Turbo models at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, revealing the next evolution of the popular sporting model.

The first-generation Veloster has proved itself as a popular choice for drivers wanting to set themselves apart from the crowd, and particularly among younger buyers. It’s noted for its distinctive twoplus-one door asymmetrical body, with just one door on the driver’s side but two doors on the passenger side of the car. The fresh design was a collaborative effort of Hyundai designers from Seoul, South Korea and the U.S. design center in Irvine, California. The new Veloster maintains the car’s unique character, but features a

comprehensive exterior and interior redesign, powertrain enhancements, and a bevy of new and improved infotainment and connectivity features. “The Veloster has been enormously successful for Hyundai, offering unique style and premium quality, while also still delivering value to our customers,” said Mike Song, Hyundai’s Head of Operations for Africa and the Middle East. “This new generation ensures the Veloster remains a compelling choice, particularly for younger drivers who want a car that is individualistic as well as dynamic, while incorporating the latest advances in engineering and technology.” Much of the redesign is derived from enhanced proportions and volume, while the new shape clearly conveys focused dynamic performance, even standing still. Its stance is more muscular, with higher-volume fenders and wheel arches for a more planted appearance, and the

roofline has been lowered for a unique profile and a distinctive coupeinspired essence. The front view is redefined by Hyundai’s signature cascading grille, with the shape morphed into a strong, threedimensional design that sets the sport coupe apart. As well as Veloster and Veloster Turbo options, the new model will also come with a powerful ‘N’ version catering for true driving enthusiasts. This new range-topping variant is tuned to deliver up to an estimated 275 horsepower – compared with just over 200 horsepower for the Veloster Turbo – and a host of handling improvements and design tweaks to match. The second-generation Hyundai Veloster will begin production in Korea in March, and is expected to arrive in showrooms during the second quarter of 2018.

DESIGN There will be nothing else on the road that looks or drives like the Jaguar I-PACE. It is designed and engineered to take full advantage of its smart electric powertrain and maximise the potential of the packaging benefits it brings. Its sleek, coupe-like silhouette is influenced by the Jaguar C-X75 supercar with a short, low bonnet, aero-enhanced roof design and curved rear screen. This cab-forward design contrasts with its squaredoff rear, which helps reduce the drag co-efficient to just 0.29Cd. To optimise the balance between cooling and aerodynamics, Active Vanes in the grille open when cooling is required, but close when not needed to redirect air through the integral bonnet scoop, smoothing airflow. Inside, the layout optimises space for passengers while sophisticated materials – including the option of a premium textile Kvadrat interior – and exquisite attention to detail identify this as a true Jaguar. While a mid-sized SUV, I-PACE’s cab forward design and EV powertrain means interior space comparable to large SUVs. In the rear, legroom is 890mm while, with no transmission tunnel, there’s a useful 10.5-litre central storage compartment. In the rear, tablet and laptop stowage is found beneath the seats, while the rear luggage compartment offers a 656-litre capacity – and 1,453-litres with seats folded flat. an AC wall box (7kW) will achieve the same state of charge in just over ten hours – ideal for overnight charging. A suite of smart range-optimising technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system: when plugged in the I-PACE will automatically raise (or lower) the temperature of its battery to maximise range ahead of driving away. PERFORMANCE Two Jaguar-designed electric motors – which feature driveshafts passing through the motors themselves for compactness – are placed at each axle, producing exceptional performance of 400PS and 696Nm and all-wheel-drive, all-surface traction. The high torque density and high-energy efficiency characteristics of the motors deliver sports car performance, launching the I-PACE from a standing start to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The instantaneous performance is matched with exceptional ride comfort and engaging driving dynamics. The bespoke EV aluminium architecture delivers Jaguar’s most rigid body structure with the battery placed centrally between the two axles; these utilise advanced double wishbone front and an Integral Link rear setup with (optional) air suspension and configurable Adaptive Dynamics. The location of the battery enables perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a centre of gravity some 130mm lower than in the F-PACE.

CONNECTED-CAR TECHNOLOGY I-PACE introduces the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system to Jaguar. Utilising an innovative combination of touchscreens, capacitive sensors and tactile physical controls, Touch Pro Duo is intuitive to use. A new EV navigation system assesses the topography of the route to destination and insights from previous journeys, including driving style, to calculate personalised range and charging status with exceptional accuracy for maximum driver confidence. The advanced system uses ‘Smart Settings’ technology – driven by AI algorithms – to identify individual driver preferences, and then tailors the I-PACE’s driving and interior settings accordingly. OWNERSHIP With competitive whole-life costs and residual values, the I-PACE will be a popular choice for private customers, professionals and companies seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and fleet costs. The I-PACE is expected to be available in the MENA region from late 2019 with a wider roll out in 2020. Please contact your local retailer for more information. As a responsible business Jaguar Land Rover is committed to delivering a cleaner future and has plans to prolong the life of its batteries from its electric vehicle with new recycling partnerships and second life energy storage trials.

This attitude is a way of life for me,” said Salameh. “During the most daring and epic expeditions, you require capable, trustworthy, and versatile teammates and equipment. The Land Rover Discovery would always be my vehicle of choice in such a situation, and that’s one of the reasons I am so excited and proud to be named as a Land Rover Brand Ambassador for this region. I am hoping that together we can share plenty of adventures with the world,” he added. “At Land Rover, we thrive on encouraging our customers and fans to go out and discover their lands and the country they call home. In acoustic terms, it thus melds the emotional appeal of a sports car with the comfort of an S-Class to unique effect. AIRMATIC with variable damper control – more ride comfort, more vehicle dynamics In combination with variable damper control, the air suspension system ensures ride comfort and dynamic handling at a very high level. This is done rapidly and precisely using two separate valves for the compression and rebound of the dampers. The occupants enjoy a soft basic suspension setup and the secure feeling of high handling stability

With the “Comfort” and “Sport” settings, AIRMATIC can be configured for more comfort or sportiness. Thanks to the pneumatic all-round self-levelling suspension, the vehicle maintains a constant level irrespective of the load. The suspension level can be raised by 30 mm to increase ground clearance. At high speeds the suspension is automatically lowered by up to 20 mm, helping to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve handling stability. NEWS First appearing on a popular coupé The Eclipse Cross’s beautiful, dynamic form creates the same sense of excitement and inspiration as the diamond ring effect during a total eclipse. The new vehicle’s high-saturation red exterior color evokes the brilliance of the sun’s halo flaring from behind the moon.

The fresh surprise of the body persists in the cabin where engineering passion culminates in sporty, dynamic refinement. From distinctive horizontal instrument panel to shining silver trim and monotone color scheme, the cockpit welcomes you to a bold new experience with Display Audio and Head Up Display keeping you stimulated and informed.

Produced in the United States from 1989, the name “Eclipse” now combines with “Cross” (short for “crossover”) in the all-new Eclipse Cross, a model that elevates the pleasure of the driving experience

Performance The newly developed 1.5L direct-injection downsize turbo engine provides a pleasing response, high revolutions and strong acceleration.

While stylish like a coupe, it’s unquestionably a Mitsubishi Motors SUV. The dynamic, sculpted form projects the explosive power of an athlete from sporty face to high-tech rear lamps. All harmonize in a strong personality that drives you to explore.

Body rigidity and adhesive welding Mitsubishi Motors also attached importance to the quality of the ride. Cars offering a great ride tend to have highly rigid bodies, but blindly adding rigidity can easily increase vehicle weight. So how does one construct a body that is both lightweight and rigid? The development team turned to adhesive technologies. Smart Driving The Eclipse Cross is a crossover that only Mitsubishi Motors, with its long tradition of building SUVs, could have made. While perfection is impossible, since people seek all sorts of different things from cars, the more you examine the details of the Eclipse Cross, touch its components and hear the stories from its makers, the more you come to appreciate both its design and the effort behind its development.

While specifically focusing on a “stylish SUV” concept, Mitsubishi Motors also aimed to satisfy as many users as possible by eliminating compromise and meeting user demands. This is what drove Mitsubishi Motors to release a new SUV. Safety The underbody and suspension have been optimized to improve handling and vehicle stability without affecting ride quality or comfort. Detail refinements to the well-proven chassis and body structure give Eclipse Cross more direct handling and a superior ride. Stimulating Design The styling stimulates your desire to drive with a single glance and fills you with confidence. Like an athlete in motion, the sculpted wedge shape and sharp, dynamic character lines leave a strong impression wherever you go.

Eclipse Cross is also equipped with the latest active safety technologies including Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and Ultrasonic-misacceleration Mitigation System to predict situations that can lead to an accident and assist the driver in avoiding them.

KIA STINGER WHO IS LAUGHING NOW? By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 67

RE VIE W

N

ot so long ago, Kia was a byword for alternative. You bought a Kia because you couldn’t afford the equivalent Japanese, European or even American rival. Kia produced cheap cars which were meant to be used as means of transport and nothing more. In the last decade or two however, things started to shift. Kia became aware that people prefer quality and started making a comeback. The manufacturer finally started to rise up to the massive potential they had all along. The Cee’d proved really popular in Europe, and North America couldn’t get enough of the Optima. Spurred on by that success Kia decided to venture into new waters: sporty sedans. Now, it’s one thing to make a good car, but a completely different to make a good car that’s also sporty. The world of performance sedans is dominated by the Germans, and making a breakthrough in such an environment is rather challenging. If your product isn’t completely on point, you’re not going to have a lot of success. Most people initially laughed at the idea of a sporty Kia, but when they launched the Stinger back in 2017, we all stood back in awe.

68 ISSUE 11 / maqinaonline.com

Exterior If you’re not particularly into cars, you might not even be able to tell it’s a Kia. Although the brand has been slowly creating their own design language over the past couple of years, the Stinger really brings out their full potential. The best compliment you can give it is that it doesn’t look like a regular Kia. Pictures are one thing, but seeing it in the flesh adds a whole new dimension to it. It’s physically a large car, but the proportions are spot on. It’s wide, long with a long wheelbase, and rather low. The front overhang is short and the rear one is long, giving some hints as to what lies underneath. The front fascia is entirely new, with Kia’s revised Tigernose grille. If you, like most people, thought the Stinger would be a redesigned Optima, think again. This is an entirely new model from the ground up.

MOST PEOPLE INITIALLY LAUGHED AT THE IDEA OF A SPORTY KIA, BUT WHEN THEY LAUNCHED THE STINGER, WE ALL STOOD BACK IN AWE

REVIEW

The roofline slopes downwards almost from the start of the B-pillars, creating this really unique shape which was once reserved only for the sporty German offerings. The rear end isn’t bad either. The taillights are connected via this big brake light stretching across the entire lid, and you even get quad exhaust tips in the top of the line GT model. It gets a small diffuser, and that air dam at the front is entirely functional too. As far as looks go, Kia seems to be in a sweet spot at the moment. Compared to something like a 4-Series or even an A5, it just looks light years better. Interior The Stinger’s interior is by far and away the best interpretation of a cabin Kia has ever done. As soon as you get inside you immediately thing of luxury. The materials are all first class and the build quality is up there with the Japanese rivals. Nothing squeaks or rattles and everything is solid. The dashboard is simple if a bit boring, but the large infotainment system atop it creates a nice break. There’s also an advanced HUD in front of the driver which can show information such as speed, navigation, audio settings, cruise settings, and blindspot detection.

Despite the low roofline, there’s a ton of headroom in the back even for taller passengers. Legroom is aplenty in both front and rear rows, thanks to that lengthy wheelbase. The seats themselves are super comfortable, especially the ones on the high-end models covered in Napa leather. The driving position is spot on too. You sit nice and low in the car, as you should in any selfproclaimed sporty sedan. The cargo capacity can hold 660 liters, which is more than sufficient for your entire luggage. It features the latest in driver assistive technologies such as lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert. What more do you need to hear? It’s luxurious, well built, offers plenty of space, and has an even better driving position than its German rivals.

REVIEW

Engine and Performance I know some of you still have doubts about the Stinger. Now that we get to the actual performance figures, you’re probably thinking it’s going to fall flat on its face. Luckily, it doesn’t. Not in the slightest. Even the entry models come equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 255 horsepower and 352 Nm of torque. Our test vehicle comes with a 3.3-liter Biturbo V6 producing an almighty 365 horsepower and 509 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels only via an eight-speed auto that Kia developed in-house. You can get the Stinger in AWD format, but for sheer driving excitement, stick with RWD as we have. The transmission is smooth and quick, even on the downshifts. It’s 99.9% as good as Audi and BMW’s dualclutch versions. We didn’t have an issue with the transmission throughout the entire test, and we drove it harder than most owners are ever going to drive their own personal cars. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 71

WE NEVER THOUGHT WE’D SEE THE DAY A KIA WAS WILLING TO OVERSTEER, BUT THE STINGER IS MORE THAN HAPPY TO DO SO

We never thought we’d see the day a Kia was willing to oversteer, but the Stinger is more than happy to do so. The rear will slide out if provoked even in second and third, but it’s remarkably manageable. The chassis is neutral so you can steer the car with the accelerator. That low center of gravity means you have a really sharp turn-in, followed by a slight hint of oversteer on corner exit. As far as driver’s cars go, the Stinger is as good if not better than the BMW. That’s right, they’ve managed to create something to rival “The Ultimate Driving Machine”.

THEY’VE MANAGED TO CREATE SOMETHING TO RIVAL “THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE”

Conclusion The only reason you wouldn’t buy the Kia is because you’re still not able to gloss over its badge. Objectively, it’s more powerful, faster, better looking and more affordable than any of its competitors. If you still have a bad image of Kia in your head, go take a Stinger GT out for a drive. It will completely rewire your brain and the way you think of Kia, we promise.

hree decades ago, Lexus was in the same situation Genesis finds itself today. Critics doubted Toyota’s upmarket brand and claimed it a lost cause before it even kicked off. As we all know, Lexus is one of the most popular luxury manufacturers in the U.S. today, so needless to say, those same critics are now long silenced. Although Genesis didn’t have the best of starts, the marquee is quickly catching on. Hyundai wisely decided to separate their luxury cars from the mainstream vehicles, and the strategy seems to be working. We recently tested the Genesis G80 Sport on the Lusail International Circuit and were pleasantly surprised with its performance.

The car displayed a lot of poise and finesse given its size, and managed to impress even the most hardcore critics. Now comes the real test though. For this issue we tested the car on Doha city roads, the G80’s natural stomping ground. Its performance on the circuit was impressive but rather irrelevant, as no one who owns a G80 will ever take it to the track. This is a car which combines luxury with a dose of sportiness, so it’s a road car in every sense of the word. The trouble is, the segment Genesis has pitched it in is rather competitive. Lexus has the GS, Mercedes has the redesigned E-Class and there’s even Chrysler’s 300. Can the Genesis compete? That’s we aimed to find out.

IT’S A LARGE CAR, BUT IT ISN’T BULKY OR OVERWHELMING ON THE ROAD

Exterior I like the way the G80 looks. I’ll start out by saying that. Genesis has got the proportions absolutely nailed. It’s a large car, but it isn’t bulky or overwhelming on the road. The long elongated hood, the long overhangs, the extended sloping roofline… everything has been designed to make the car as elegant and flowing as possible. If you like a car that’s a bit understated but still has lots of presence, the G80 Sport offers exactly that. The front fascia is dominated by this huge grille just below the Genesis logo. The front bumper is flanked by large air dams on each side, and a pretty substantial opening at the bottom too. The headlights do have some Mercedes-Benz-like elements, but they’re completely bespoke units. It’s a weird mix between luxury and sportiness. A good type of weird mix.

THE REAR BUMPER HOUSES A DISCRETE DIFFUSER IN THE MIDDLE AND TRUE QUAD EXHAUST PIPES

The rear is perhaps its best side. The gorgeously-sculpted taillights extend well into the rear quarter panels, but they do so following the design line which extends from the front of the car all the way to the rear. The rear bumper houses a discrete diffuser in the middle and true quad exhaust pipes. They’re not fake plastic inserts hiding the exhaust tips underneath like the Lexus as well. They’re the real deal. It’s hard to nitpick the G80’s exterior. The front grille is perhaps a bit too large, but that’s mostly it. On the whole, this is a complete package through and through.

Interior The interior is, once again, a weird mix between European and Asian design touches. It doesn’t have the most interesting of dashboard designs, but then again, neither do any of the Germans (apart from Mercedes). The center console is littered with buttons, with a nice little analogue clock breaking up the lines. The overall feel in the G80 Sport’s cabin is that of spaciousness. It’s almost got an A8-like cabin in terms of how large it feels. The tunnel housing is wide and tall, like it is in the Audi. The transmission lever is of the “joystick” variety and the throttle pedal is attached to the floor like it is in the European offerings. If I had to have one criticism, it would be directed towards the HVAC vents.

They look like they came straight from VW and are lacking any appeal. Apart from that though, I’m mighty impressed with what Genesis was able to do. The materials used are superb as one would expect on such a premium, upstate limo, and the fit and finish is as good as the one found in its rivals. The driving position is good too, but the seats could do with just a tad more lateral support. They’ve been designed for comfortable driving for hundreds upon hundreds of miles though, so I can’t really fault them for that.

THE MATERIALS USED ARE SUPERB AS ONE “WOULD EXPECT ON SUCH A PREMIUM ”

THE V6’S TWIN TURBOS ENSURE THAT TORQUE COMES FAST AND “REMAINS FAIRLY HIGH THROUGHOUT THE REV RANGE ” Engine and Performance The G80’s base engine is a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower and 509 Nm of torque. The optional 5.0-liter V8 delivers a healthier 420 horsepower but the torque rating stands at 519 Nm, so it’s not that big of an improvement over the V6. The figures tell half the story however, because the way the power comes on in both engines is quite different. The V6’s twin turbos ensure that torque comes fast and remains fairly high throughout the rev range, all the way from 1,300 to 4,500 rpm. The V8’s torque curve is much steeper, arching upwards all the way to 5,000 rpm. On the road it’s difficult to fault either of them. The V6 is smooth and effortless, perfect for daily driving and commuting. The V8 needs a heavier foot if you want to wake it up, but the soundtrack is definitely more sonorous.

You do notice the extra horsepower but you’re going at silly speeds by the time you do. The V8 is also a lot less fuel efficient. Both engines send power to the wheels via an eightspeed auto which is fast and smooth. Although rear-wheel drive is standard, you can opt for an all-wheel drive system called HTRAC. It does a wonderful job of distributing power to the wheels which have grip, but for sheer driving pleasure, the base RWD models are the way to go.

Conclusion It’s a big luxury limo first and foremost, but it’s littered with sporty details. The chassis is excellent. It’s neutral and reacts positive to the driver’s inputs. It’s an Asian luxury vehicle with sporty European credentials. Praises don’t come higher than that.

FERRARI

PORTOFINO THE BRILLIANT SUCCESSOR BY: TAREK HAWCHAR

R OA D T R IP

If Ferrari invites you to a test drive in Italy out of all the places, you reschedule everything else and say yes immediately. The test drive this time concerned their latest Portofino. A direct replacement for the California T, the Portofino is Ferrari’s luxurious and comfortable GT car. It’s the softest most relaxing car they make, but it’s got big shoes to fill. We loved the original California, and even more so the subsequent California T. Despite the amazing 488 and F12, the California T was the best Ferrari to live with on a day to day basis. The question is, can this new model be a match?

]

Aggressive Styling Our Portofino wasn’t finished in the traditional Ferrari red, but a wonderful color which is a mix between gray and silver. It shifts and changes contrast depending on the lighting, making the car really pop out. It was also a revelation to see just how good a color other than red and yellow suits this Ferrari. Dimensionally, the Portofino is almost identical to the California T. The skin however, is completely new. Ferrari used their current design language to update the exterior, and it’s immediately apparent that this is an all-new model, not just a facelifted California. It’s smoother, sleeker and more elegant in every way, resembling the newer 812 Superfast a lot more. The front fascia looks like it’s constantly smiling, which pretty accurately describes what the person behind the steering wheel is doing most of the time. The headlights have been redesigned with a new L-shape and the big grille has been angled upwards. The side air vents are also a lot bigger now, though that does improve cooling as well, Ferrari claims. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 93

“ I’M STILL STRUGGLING TO DETERMINE WHETHER I LIKE IT MORE WITH THE ROOF UP OR DOWN ” The profile view is extremely pleasing to look at. The long elongated hood, the short overhangs, the extremely low height… everything adds up to create one of the most stunning cars you’ll ever see on the road. With the roof up, the Portofino almost looks like it was designed to be a coupe from the very beginning. I’m still struggling to determine whether I like it more with the roof up or down.

To top it all off, the high waistline makes the cockpit look like a fighter jet canopy. The rear exhibits traditional Ferrari features too. The single round taillights on each side, the aggressive diffuser at the bottom, and of course, the quad exhaust outlets. Ferrari has done an excellent job at making the Portofino seem like a true super car. Proportionally and design-wise they absolutely hit the nail on the head.

The Most Luxurious Ferrari Ever Again, Ferrari has gone to the trouble of completely redesigning the cabin, not just giving it a mild facelift. Although I wouldn’t call the Portofino’s cabin luxurious in conventional terms, it is ergonomic and full of features. Compared to something like the 488 Pista, this feels like a Rolls-Royce. The 8-inch touchscreen has been improved, so it’s now faster as well as more aesthetically pleasing. Ferrari claims to have updated the graphics on the instrument cluster too, though they look as great as they did before. The seats are new and are even skinnier than before. Still, Ferrari has managed to make them more supportive and a whole lot more comfortable. The ones in the back are cramped but are definitely more usable than those in the California T. They’re great for kids, not so much for adults. Shorter journeys aren’t an issue, but full-grown adults will require a stretch every hour or two.The steering wheel is as confusing as ever, but only if you’re a Ferrari rookie. If you’ve driven any model after the F430 starting with the 458, you’ll be immediately at home. The wheel itself is perfect however. The right size and the right thickness. The fact that it’s covered in gorgeous Alcantara helps things too.

If you want it to oversteer, it will at a moment’s notice.

Unparalleled Performance It may be a GT, but the Portofino is a true super car at heart. The 3.9-liter V8 is derived from the 488, making 600 horsepower in this particular application. The variable boost system eliminates turbo lag completely, and you genuinely don’t even notice the fact that it’s turbocharged, even at low revs. Torque output stands at 760 Nm from 3,000 rpm to 5,250 rpm. Redline is a rather high 7,500 rpm. The figures are as follows: 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 12 seconds and a top speed well north of 300 km/h. Ferrari has stiffened up the chassis too. The change in construction made the Portofino 40 kilograms lighter over its predecessor, but a lot more rigid in addition. Just as we were starting to familiarize ourselves with the Portofino’s dynamic capabilities, it started to rain. When I say rain, I mean pour. Naturally, feeling a little down, I put the roof up and continued driving. Little did I know, the rain was a gift, not a curse. It showcased the Portofino’s neutral chassis and accurate steering to a degree I would not have experienced on dry pavement. Because the limits of grip were a lot lower on the wet road, I was able to get closer to the car’s limits too. What I found simply blew me away. This so-called GT possesses all of the poise and balance its 488 sibling does, with none of the drawbacks. It steers on command. If you want it to oversteer, it will at a moment’s notice. If you want it to just easily powerslide on the way out of a corner, it won’t even blink an eye while doing it. It’s a masterclass in driving dynamics.

Conclusion The Portofino isn’t just a step up from the California T. Ferrari has managed to make a car which is 10 times better, and I’m not exaggerating. As a usable Ferrari, one which can be driven daily, this is Ferrari’s finest creation to date.

BENTLEY BENTAYGA V8 SMALLER ENGINE, BIGGER REWARDS BY: TAREK HAWCHAR

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 101

R OA D T R IP

T

he popularity of SUVs is on the rise. They’re quickly outselling the humble hatchback and the sedan combined. People like the appeal of a big, practical body but still demand car-like behavior from their SUV. Most manufacturers have at least one SUV offering in their lineup nowadays, and companies like Ford and Chevrolet offer over half a dozen such vehicles. Although most of these vehicles are classified as SUVs, there are in fact quite a few differences between them.

102

Most of the so-called SUVs are just jacked up cars pretending to be something they’re not. Sure they’re taller and they ride a lot higher, but the underpinnings are based on their car siblings. The small and mid-size crossovers are perfect examples of this. One manufacturer which recently joined the SUV game is Bentley. The highly anticipated Bentayga launched with the W12 flagship engine, and it wowed a lot of people for the most part.

R O AD T R I P

As expected, Bentley is now extending the Bentayga lineup with a new engine under the bonnet. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s the excellent 4.0 TFSI V8 we’re talking about. To experience it and find out if it is indeed as good as its W12 sibling, we were invited to the Kitzbuhel Country Club in the Austrian Alps. The test drive was just over 200 kilometers and the temperatures dropped down to a chilling -14 degrees Celsius. The perfect environment then, for testing a brand-new SUV.

Exterior Visually, the V8 Bentayga is almost identical to its bigger brother. From the outside at least, it’s difficult to distinguish the two unless you’re a Bentley employee. They introduced new colors for the 2019 model and added bespoke 22-inch wheels, which do make the big SUV pop out it has to be said.

The Bentayga is a “vehicle which grows on you over time ”

The Bentayga is a vehicle which grows on you over time. The first time you look at it you might find it a bit bulky and large, but the more you stare at it the more you appreciate it. The proportions are actually quite good, it’s the relatively tall roofline which makes it appear larger than it is. The long overhangs give off the illusion of it being longer than it is too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but by no means is the Bentayga the prettiest SUV on the market. It’s elegant and subtle, but I wouldn’t call it striking. The front fascia is designed to mimic that of the Continental GT, and it does for the most part. The headlights are similar and so it the grille, but they’re mounted much higher.

maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 11 105

R OA D T R IP

“ SUBTLETY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME HERE ” I especially love the little wheel arch extensions on the rear quarter panel. From a 3/4 shot they make the Bentley appear sporty. The rear is rather underwhelming because there’s not a lot to look at, but as I said, subtlety is the name of the game here. The small roof spoiler on the top of the trunk adds some character, and of course so do the quad exhausts which have been molded to look as true duals, one per each side.

Interior Inside, the Bentayga is just as luxurious as before. Nothing new to talk about, but then again, it’s hard to improve on perfection. The Bentayga has to be one of the most luxurious and sumptuous SUVs on the market, right up there with the flagship Range Rover. It completely cocoons you and isolates you from the outside world. It’s like sitting in the lounge of a really expensive hotel. You feel cozy and snug. Naturally, everything you touch and see feels and looks expensive. That’s because it is expensive. Bentley spared no expenses when it comes to the materials, and the fit and finish is second to none. Commenting the interior further would be a waste of words. The cabin of the Bentayga represents the last word in terms of luxury and comfort when it comes to large SUVs. To compare it to the Audi Q7 would be an insult to Bentley. It’s a huge step up from the usual luxury SUVs from the likes of Audi and BMW.

THE V8 SHAKES THINGS UP A BIT. YOU START IT UP AND YOU’RE GREETED BY A RATHER MEAN GROWL AT IDLE.

Power and Performance Now, despite being shorter on cylinders, the V8 develops 540 horsepower, just 60 less than the large W12. Torque has been declined to 772 Nm too (from 894 Nm), but you don’t notice the decrease. We’re still talking about well over 700 Nm, and at sane speeds, it’s more than enough to get you in trouble quickly. The V8 Bentayga can sprint 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. That, in case you were wondering, is as fast as a manual BMW M4. Because the W12 is essentially two V6 engines smashed together, it’s not as vocal as a true V12. The unit is very smooth and effective, but not that exhilarating or fun. The W12 Bentayga is effortless but it almost makes the car too easy to drive, because it never feels like it’s working hard. The sudden rush of torque pushing you in the seat is awesome, but it’s not followed up by any loud noise. The V8 shakes things up a bit. You start it up and you’re greeted by a rather mean growl at idle. It isn’t afraid to shout and yell its lungs out at the top of the rev range. The redline is a rather high 7,200 rpm, the highest rev limit ever for any Bentley.

110 ISSUE 11 / maqinaonline.com

In terms of noise, the V8 has the W12 trumped. The V8 is also lighter by 25 kilograms, making the Bentayga understeer even less at the limit. It’s eager to turn in and exhibits practically no body roll. The 48-volt antiroll bar system does a wonderful job of eliminating body roll. It’s neigh-on ridiculous how stable a 2.3-tonne SUV can feel. To wrap things off we drove the big Bentley on Ice and experienced the three different driving modes: Bentley Mode, Snow and Slippery. With varying degree of slip angle and traction control on all, it was easy to find the right setup whether you were looking for something safe or wanted to have fun. I’d say it’s almost as good as Land Rover’s Terrain Response, and that’s a major achievement on its own.

Which one should you buy? The V8 will be negligibly cheaper than the W12, so the question is: which one do you go for? If you want the flagship for bragging rights, the W12 is a no-brainer. However, in terms of driving, I actually think I like the V8 more. It’s almost as fast but has a lot more character and personality. Plus, it’s more fuel efficient. Not that you care in such a car, but it’s worth a mention.

TIPS Just like the Mona Lisa, your super car can become a collectable piece of art. Therefore taking care of your super car will increase its value when it’s no longer available on the production line. Here are some tips on how to make your super car last longer.

1

Maintenance by expert Super cars engines are very sensitive and sophisticated. When the manufacture recommends the use of a specific oil or parts, these recommendations are based on researches and studies done by their engineers. Some super cars even require a specific procedure to do a job as simple as regular oil change. Make sure to service your car at the dealership or by a manufacturer certified service center using only recommended and genuine parts.

2

Bumper to Bumper Supercar engines are high output engines that produce a-lot of heat, cooled by radiators to maximize performance, these radiators need air to maximize cooling. When stopped in traffic or when moving at very low speeds these radiators are not being air fed properly which increases the engine temps and result in decreasing the life of the engine and its performance overtime.

3

Give her a dose of oxygen If you can’t resist leaving your super car at home while going through your daily routine. Make sure you take her for a long highway cruise at least twice a month where you can unleash the beast and make her breath well. This will avoid any carbon buildups on the engine compartment.
