JAGUAR F-TYPE RALLY CARS CELEBRATE 70 YEARS OF SPORTS CAR HERITAGE
J
aguar has developed two F-TYPE Convertible rally cars, with design cues from the F-TYPE Chequered Flag Limited Edition, to continue its celebration of 70 years of sports car heritage since the XK 120 was revealed in 1948. The one-off F-TYPE rally cars also pay homage to the legendary Jaguar XK 120 registered ‘NUB 120’ which, in the early 1950s in the hands of Ian Appleyard, completed three consecutive Alpine Rallies without incurring a single penalty point, and won the RAC and Tulip. Both rally-specification F-TYPE Convertibles are powered by Jaguar’s 300PS 2.0-litre Ingenium four-cylinder petrol engine. With modifications overseen by Jaguar Design and Engineering, both cars were built to FIA specification, with comprehensively uprated brakes and suspension fitted alongside a protective rollcage, race-seats with six-point harness, bonnet-mounted light pod and fire extinguisher. Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design, said: “The opportunity to design a rally car doesn’t come along very often so I was fascinated to see how we could take our modern day sports car to a similar character. These models are a fitting tribute to the XK 120 and all the great Jaguar sports cars since its reveal 70 years ago, including the latest F-TYPE Chequered Flag Limited Edition.”
20 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
The rally F-TYPEs feature upgrades to the brakes, suspension and drivetrain including the addition of grooved discs with fourpiston calipers front and rear. Hand-built competition dampers and softer springs ensure the high performance cars can be driven flat-out over rough rally stages. Three-way adjustable dampers allow the cars to be tuned for different surfaces and feature spherical bearings for added precision. With motorsportspec wheels and tyres specifically for use on gravel, a limitedslip differential improves power delivery on loose surfaces while a hydraulic handbrake helps drivers tackle hairpin bends. The celebratory models were put through their paces at Walters Arena rally stage, South Wales, to demonstrate their performance credentials and will now attend a series of Jaguar events over the next few months. The rally cars’ livery takes design inspiration from the new F-TYPE Chequered Flag Limited Edition, which features a range of subtle exterior visual enhancements, including unique 20-inch Gloss Black wheels with a Diamond Turned finish and a Black Contrast roof on the Coupé. Inside, the luxurious Ebony Windsor Leather interior features Performance seats with embossed Chequered Flag headrests and a Dark Brushed Aluminium centre console trim finisher.

TWO CARS, ONE DNA: JAGUAR XE 300 SPORT AND SV PROJECT 8 CREATE 1000-METRE LONG DOUBLE HELIX
J
aguar has celebrated the shared bloodline of the XE 300 SPORT and XE SV Project 8 by creating a unique piece of art in the sand. The two cars weaved across the beach at Pendine Sands to produce a 1000-metre long double helix pattern. The shared DNA that unites the XE and SV Project 8 includes the cars’ lightweight aluminium body structure, outstanding driving dynamics and all-wheel drive traction, which allowed the two Jaguars to create the 1000-metre long artwork with absolute precision. To find the space to create such a large pattern, the two cars travelled to Pendine Sands in Wales. Pendine Sands, like Jaguar, has a rich heritage of speed and performance, having been used for motorsport for over 100 years. Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar Land Rover said: “The aluminium-intensive body construction of the XE enabled Jaguar to create a car as special as Project 8. These two saloons share the same DNA, delivering excellent handling, peerless performance and unrivalled dynamics.”
The dynamic demonstration of precision and accuracy follows the Jaguar XE 300 SPORT’s return to the long-forgotten Circuit de Charade in France, where Vincent Radermecker set a lap record for a production saloon around the original 8km layout last used 30 years ago. The Jaguar XE 300 SPORT is available exclusively with the 300PS 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine and all 300 SPORT models feature unique Dark Satin Grey details including the wheels, rear spoiler, grille surround and mirror caps, along with 300 SPORT badging on the front grille and bootlid. Since its launch in 2017, the XE SV Project 8 has broken a collection of speed records, setting the fastest lap time for a four-door sedan in production-intent specification around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a time of 7min 21.23sec. Only last month the super saloon logged a new production sedan lap record in the USA at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey, California with a time of 1min 37.54sec.

GAZOO RACING SCOOPS ONE-TWO VICTORY DURING FIA WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP AT FUJI SPEEDWAY
G
AZOO Racing (GR) delighted an enthusiastic home crowd by recently earning a one-two victory at the 6 Hours of Fuji, the fourth round of the 2018-19 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). A compelling race saw the No. 7 TS050 Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and José María López cross the line in front, just 11.440 seconds ahead of team-mates Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima, and Fernando Alonso in the No. 8 TS050 Hybrid Electric Vehicle, for their first win of the season despite starting eighth. Commenting on the GAZOO Racing team’s victory, Akio Toyoda, President, Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “We have achieved an excellent result of finishing the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Fuji with a one-two finish. I would like to express our appreciation to all the fans that supported us. The 6 Hours of Fuji this year meant a lot to us; a triumphant home return following the Le Mans 24 Hours, a chance to race again after the disappointment of the previous race and the home race of GAZOO Racing. Thank you very much to all team members for this one-two finish, and congratulations

on the long-awaited win for all on car No. 7! And for the fans who always support us, thank you very much. We appreciate your continued support.” Hisatake Murata, Team President, added: “I’m really happy with this perfect result and I am also pleased we could put on such a great spectacle for the fans here at Fuji Speedway. All week they have given us fantastic support, so I hope they enjoyed watching this exciting race. As our home race, Fuji is a very important event for us, and the target was always to earn another one-two victory in front of our fans and colleagues. We could achieve that because the team worked hard and performed well, even when faced with difficult weather conditions early in the race, so I am proud of their effort.” The achievement marked Toyota’s third one-two victory in the 2018 WEC and its sixth win from seven WEC races at its home circuit, while for Mike and Kamui it is their first victory since a memorable triumph at Fuji in 2016. It was a particularly special race for José María López, who set the fastest lap and earned his first-ever WEC win, having joined the team last season.
NEWS
The result extends GAZOO Racing’s lead in the teams’ World Championship to 14 points over its closest rival team. Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima, and Fernando Alonso stretched their advantage in the drivers’ standings, with Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and José María López moving up to second, 13 points behind. An action-packed start on a wet track saw Kazuki Nakajima in the pole position No. 8 hold the advantage while Kamui put on an overtaking show in the No. 7, exploiting the advantage of four-wheel drive in the difficult conditions to move from eighth on the grid to second by lap two. The excitement continued throughout a fascinating first hour. Kamui pitted early to switch to heavy wet tires before a safety car period eliminated Kazuki’s lead of over one minute. Soon after, the No. 8 switched to hybrid intermediate tires, leaving the rival No. 11 in the lead. Changing weather added to the drama, with bright sunshine drying the track towards the end of the safety car period. That left Kamui Kobayashi on inappropriate tires for the conditions, so he was the first to pit for slick tires after the 30-minute interruption, and he took advantage by immediately setting very quick lap times. Kazuki Nakajima and the other LMP1 cars did likewise soon after, and when the running order stabilized early in the second hour, Kamui led in the No. 7 with Kazuki close behind and both TS050 HEVs steadily building a gap to the third-placed competitor No. 1. The momentum swung between the two Toyota vehicles, depending on who had the newer tires. After a full course yellow with two hours remaining, José María López in the No. 7 led by around 20 seconds from Fernando Alonso in the No. 8 and the pair pushed each other hard. José set what turned out to be the fastest lap of the race on lap 153, and he kept a stable gap at the front until handing the lead to Kamui Kobayashi with just over 30 minutes remaining.
Kamui had the honor of taking the checkered flag in the No. 7, with Kazuki bringing the No. 8 home second for a perfect team result. Over the years, Toyota has been participating in many different forms of motorsports, including Formula One, the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race. Toyota’s participation in these events was overseen by separate entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established GAZOO Racing (GR), to consolidate all of its motorsports activities under one in-house brand. Representing Toyota’s belief that ‘the roads build the people, and the people build the cars,’ GR highlights the role of motorsports as a fundamental pillar of Toyota’s commitment to making ‘ever-better’ cars. Harnessing years of experience gained under the extreme conditions of various motorsports events, GR aims to forge new technologies and solutions that bring the freedom, adventure, and joy of driving to everyone.

BMW I PROVIDES MOBILITY SOLUTION TO THE OCEAN CLEANUP. Since 2013, Boyan Slat has been working on his dream to rid the Pacific Ocean of the large amounts of waste plastic floating around. During that time, the 24-year-old Dutch TU Delft student has become world famous with his initiative The Ocean Cleanup that tackles the so-called ‘plastic soup’. ‘The largest cleanup in history’ is what the team calls the operation. The cleaning system consists of a 600-meter-long tube that floats on the water. Below it is a tapered, three-meter long ’skirt’. The floater not only ensures the buoyancy of the system, but at the same time prevents plastic from flowing over it, while the skirt prevents the (plastic) waste from escaping underneath. Both the plastic waste and the system are propelled by the ocean current, but the wind and waves only drive the system, because the float is

just above the water surface, while the plastic is mainly just below it. The system therefore moves faster than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be caught. With this method – according to The Ocean Cleanup, fifty percent of the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ could be cleaned every five years. A history with BMW i September 8, 2018 was the official launch of ‘System 001’ in San Francisco. A tugboat pulled the ingenious floating device under the Golden Gate to the open sea marking the start of the cleanup operation. The system went on its way to a stopover, some 600 kilometers off the coast. After a trial period of two weeks, it continues its journey to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, some 1,500 kilometers further, to start the Cleanup.
NEWS
During the event in San Francisco, the team was supplied with a fully electric BMW i3. In the Netherlands, in September, three BMW i3s models have also been delivered at the new head office of The Ocean Cleanup in Rotterdam to provide 100 percent electric mobility for Boyan Slat and his team for the coming 12 months. The delivery of the vehicles to the Rotterdam office, builds on a longer cooperation that started in 2017 when three BMW i3’s were provided to the mobility mix for the event during which Slat and his team made the grand announcement to start the operation as soon as 2018. BMW i and The Ocean Cleanup. For The Ocean Cleanup it is important that their company cars suit the philosophy of the organization, and the fully electrical BMW i3 fits that bill completely. “At BMW i as an incubator for innovations we also keep pushing the boundaries of sustainability, even beyond the car”, says Dr. Robert Irlinger, head of BMW i. “We are delighted to support The Ocean
Cleanup on their mission, because we share the same mindset.” Awarded as the world’s most sustainable car manufacturer (1), BMW Group, in turn, sees the need to address the global challenge of plastic pollution, even though the company is not at the root of it. At the same time, BMW i continuously strives to maximize the use of recyclates and re-growing materials in their products. In the wider context of a circular economy BMW i is considering the use of recovered plastic from rivers and oceans. BMW i3 up to 95% recyclable. In addition to the fact that the entire production chain of the BMW i3 is supplied with green energy, the car can be recycled up to 95%. This way the BMW i3 has been awarded multiple times as benchmark within sustainable car concepts.2) Furthermore, the extensive use of re-growing or recycled materials for e.g. the door cladding and the seats demonstrate the BMW i commitment for an advanced circular economy.

DBX: PROTOTYPE OF ASTON MARTIN’S
FIRST SUV BEGINS TESTING
A
ston Martin has made a significant and symbolic stride towards the luxury brand’s first SUV - now officially confirmed as being named DBX - with the first development prototype being put through its paces along a demanding Welsh Rally stage in the hands of the company’s Chief Engineer, Matt Becker. This first test for DBX signifies the start of an extensive testing programme. One that has begun in Wales, as a nod to Aston Martins’ new St Athan production facility in the Vale of Glamorgan. Though simulation is an essential part of DBX’s early development phase, this first prototype drive in Wales signifies the start of ‘real world’ testing, in which the SUV will be subjected to a punishing regime that will ultimately see development prototypes of the all-new machine tackle some of the world’s harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahnen and Nürburgring Nordschleife.
42 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
The unique nature of DBX in the Aston Martin range means it requires a dedicated test programme; one that features new processes, procedures and standards that reflect its all-purpose role. So, while it will perform with the verve and poise of a true Aston Martin, its dynamic envelope has to extend into areas previously off-limits to the marque’s sporting roots. Naturally this includes impressive multi-terrain and towing capabilities as befits a state-of-the-art SUV. Speaking of his drive in the DBX development prototype, Aston Martin Chief Engineer, Matt Becker, said: ‘We have already developed and tuned DBX in the driving simulator, which has enabled us to make excellent progress in advance of the first physical prototype cars being available. Still, it’s always a big day when you get to put the first actual miles on an early prototype and I’m delighted with the near perfect correlation between the simulator and this prototype.
NEWS
As an engineer, it’s genuinely exciting to get a feel for the car you’re working to create. DBX is a very different kind of Aston Martin, but we will be testing it in all conditions and across all terrains to ensure it delivers a driving experience worthy of the wings badge’ DBX is scheduled to be unveiled in the last quarter of 2019 and will be built at Aston Martin Lagonda’s St Athan facility; a stateof-the-art luxury manufacturing plant that will ultimately become the ‘Home of Electrification’ when the marque’s fully-EV models enter production. Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Andy Palmer said: “Seeing a DBX development prototype in action is a momentous chapter in the story of our first SUV, for it is the moment it really comes alive. DBX is so much more than ‘just’ an SUV; it will be the first model built at our brandnew facility in St Athan. As such, it is very much the start of a bold new era in the company’s long history.”

THE NEW PORSCHE 911
MORE POWERFUL, FASTER, WITH A NEW DESIGN
E
ntering the eighth generation, the new Porsche 911 celebrated its world premiere on the eve of this year’s L.A. Auto Show, with the reveal of the 911 Carrera S and 4S Coupé models. The brand’s icon continues to set the standard when it comes to exclusive sportiness. Unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA with a more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor, the new 911 is timeless and modern. Intelligent control and chassis elements as well as innovative assistance systems enhance the masterfully uncompromising dynamism that the classic rear-engine sports car is famed for. The next generation of flat-six turbocharged engines has been further developed and is more powerful than ever before, resulting in a performance of 450 hp (331 kW) in the 911 Carrera S and 4S. An improved injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system enhance drive efficiency even further.
54 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
The power is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (dual-clutch transmission). Additional highlights include new assistance systems, such as the Porsche Wet mode to make driving even safer, Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, as well as comprehensive connectivity now also using swarm intelligence. 911 Carrera S models start from 450 hp The turbocharged flat-six engine of the 911 Carrera S* and 911 Carrera 4S* now produces 450 hp (331 kW). This corresponds to an increase of 30 hp (22 kW) compared with the previous generation. Both 911 models beat the four-second mark for acceleration from zero to 100 km/h: the rear-wheel-drive 911 Carrera S needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S, with all-wheel drive, just 3.6 seconds. This makes both cars 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors.
NEWS
The optional Sport Chrono Package reduces the sprint by a further 0.2 seconds. The top speed has been measured at 308 km/h for the 911 Carrera S and 306 km/h for the all-wheel-drive version. The fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) of the 911 Carrera S is 8.9 l/100 km, while the 911 Carrera 4S records this figure as 9.0 l/100 km. Clear design language, unmistakable identity The exterior design is completely new and emphasises the leap in performance for the 911 internally coded as 992. Significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. The rear end is now the same width across all models, highlighting the slimline centre section. At the front, the body is 45 mm wider. Electrical pop-out handles in the doors emphasise the tapered and smooth side contour, while a bonnet with a pronounced recess evokes the design of the first 911 generations. At the rear, all models feature a rear significantly wider, variable-position rear spoiler and the seamless, elegant light strip. Apart from the front and rear sections, the entire outer shell is now made from aluminium. The completely new interior is characterised by the clear and straight lines of the dashboard with recessed instruments, inspired by the 911 models from the 1970s.
Alongside the central rev counter – typical for Porsche – two thin, frameless displays supply information to the driver. The centre screen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is now 10.9 inches, and can be operated easily and without distraction thanks to the new interior design. Located underneath this there is a compact switch unit with five buttons for direct access to important vehicle functions. In terms of digitalisation, the 911 takes the next step into the future with permanent connectivity as well as new functions and services. The standard PCM features include navigation as well as Porsche Connect Plus. New assistance systems increase safety and comfort In a world first, Porsche has developed the Wet mode, included as standard. This function detects water on the road, preconditions the control systems accordingly and warns the driver, who can then set up the vehicle for enhanced safety, by simply pushing a button or using the mode switch on the steering wheel (Sport Chrono Package).

ALL-NEW BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT CONVERTIBLE THE PINNACLE OPEN-TOP GRAND TOURER
B
entley is introducing the all-new Continental GT Convertible. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Britain – and representing all Bentley knows about creating the world’s most stylish and elegant Grand Tourers – the GT Convertible is the very essence of the luxury brand. Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said: “Elegant understatement that forces you to look; engineering excellence you’ll take for granted – the extraordinary breadth of capabilities offered by the new Continental GT Convertible is unique and can only be offered by our noble British brand. We have been building luxury Grand Tourers since the company was founded in 1919 and, as we approach our centenary year, the Continental GT Convertible joins a highly acclaimed range – arguably the strongest and most technologically advanced portfolio of products the world has ever seen in one luxury brand.”
58 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
Elegant and sculptural exterior styling harmonises perfectly with an exquisite handcrafted cabin, featuring the highest quality leathers and sustainably sourced veneers. The tailored convertible roof can be deployed or stowed in just 19 seconds, with the car travelling at speeds of up to 30 mph (50 km/h). This transforms the Continental GT Convertible from a luxurious coupe into an open-top Grand Tourer at the touch of a button. Seven different fabric hood colours are available, including an authentic tweed finish for the first time. A newly designed neckwarmer (which is both warmer and quieter than in the previous generation model), is seamlessly integrated into the heated Comfort Seats, optimising efficiency and airflow around the electrically adjustable headrests.
NEWS
The styling highlight of the new neckwarmer is a chrome centre vane that stretches the full width of the duct, echoing Bentley’s famous ‘bullseye’ vents. Combined with a heated steering wheel, seat heaters and new heated armrests, these sophisticated comfort features create a luxurious driving experience in all environments. The all-new Continental GT Convertible heightens the sensory experience of open-air motoring with exhilarating performance. A powerful 6.0-litre Bentley W12 engine is mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission. [WLTP drive cycle: fuel consumption, mpg (l/100km) - Combined 20.2 (14.0). Combined CO₂- 317g/km. NEDC drive cycle equivalent: fuel consumption, mpg (l/100km) – Combined 22.8 (12.4). Combined CO₂ - 284g/km.] The new powertrain uses the latest engine management technology to produce 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) of torque, and accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds), on to a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).
The new Continental GT Convertible also showcases major evolutions in Bentley’s unique application of technology. An advanced, fully digital, driverfocused instrument panel and Bentley Rotating Display for the driver are among the suite of innovations. The latter features an impressive 12.3” touchscreen housed in a three-sided unit, which revolves from pure veneer to reveal either a touchscreen or three elegant analogue dials – offering customers the option of a digital detox when desired. Elegant, sophisticated and refined, the all-new Continental GT Convertible is the pinnacle of open-top luxury Grand Touring. Effortless Elegance Meets Power and Style Unmistakably a Bentley – the third generation Continental GT Convertible retains the elegance and style of its forebears. More sculpted and sharply defined, the all-new body and materials combine to create a truly beautiful car – roof up or down.

NEWS
The Convertible’s profile is longer and lower than its forebear due to the positioning of the front wheels 135 mm further forward. This has allowed the bonnet to be extended and the nose to be lowered. The key signature power lines of its coupe sibling still dominate, flowing back towards the muscular rear haunches. The lighting on the Continental GT Convertible uses the latest LED Matrix technology, but it is the design of the headlamps that truly sets them apart. Inspired by the finest cut-crystal glasses, the internal surfaces are transparent with sharply defined edges that catch the light like a diamond. The result is similar to that of an illuminated gem – an effect which is magnified when the optional welcome sequence gradually illuminates the headlights as you approach the car. The taillights also feature the cut-crystal effect, highlighting the three-dimensional depth of the optics. The all-new Continental GT Convertible has 21” Five Tri-Spoke wheels as standard, with the option of 10-Spoke and 22” Five OpenSpoke wheels. These three wheel designs are offered in a selection of ten polished and painted finishes. Convertible customers can choose from the palette of 17 colours, including Beluga, Onyx and Portofino. An optional extended range of colours is also available – as well as the option of full bespoke colourmatching for Bentley customers. These can be coordinated with seven exterior roof colours. A Handcrafted Luxurious Cabin The exquisite interior of the all-new Continental GT Convertible is a showcase for Bentley’s unrivalled expertise in the use of natural materials, fully revealed to the world when the elegant roof is lowered. From the highest-quality leathers, to rare, sustainably sourced veneers, such as Koa and Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus, the cabin is a triumph for craftsmanship and artisanal skill. Unique dual-veneer is offered, with over 10 square metres of wood used in every car. 60 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
Customers have the choice of a polished wooden steering wheel too. The dashboard is styled and sculpted by long, flowing wings that mirror the shape of the Bentley badge. Continental GT Convertible customers can choose from eight interior hood lining colours, including Red, Blue and Magnolia. The centre console is finished to match the lower fascia, but can be specified in a new technical finish that is inspired by the delicate mechanical surfacing inside the finest mechanical Swiss watches, known as Côtes de Genève. This surface is machined onto 0.6 mmthick aluminium and is created by machining from side to side to create a linear pattern. Each row is 5 mm wide and machined at an angle to give a truly three-dimensional finish, with each pass of the machine making a minute step of 0.5 mm. New types of luxurious haptic finishes adorn the interior of the Continental GT Convertible for greater sensory, as well as visual, enjoyment. In some areas, pillow knurling replaces the traditional mechanical knurling, for a softer, more refined feel on switches and controls, while diamond knurling adds a luxurious touch using a detailed three-dimensional faceted surface. The 20-way adjustable Comfort Seats set new industry standards in comfort and refinement. Smooth centre panels allow maximum efficiency for the ventilation, heating and massage functions, while the adjustable bolsters retain the signature Bentley quilting. There is also the option of Hand Cross Stitch finishing. A choice of three audio systems is offered in the new Continental GT Convertible. The standard system features 10 speakers and 650 Watts, while a Bang & Olufsen 1,500 W, 16-speaker system with illuminated speaker grilles is available, benefiting from the first automotive application of the BeoSonic system – a new way for tone setting with a simple, intuitive one-touch user interface.

NEWS A Naim 2,200 W, 18-speaker system with Active Bass Transducers built into the front seats and eight sound modes is offered for the true audiophile. Behind the wheel, the technological advancements in the new Continental GT Convertible continue. The driver-orientated instrument panel is fully digital and can be personalised by the driver. The Bentley Rotating Display offers the choice between a digital or analogue journey. At first glance there appears to be no screen in the centre of the dashboard. Instead, the veneer flows uninterrupted across the dashboard, while a thin chrome bezel behind the steering wheel surrounds a digital instrument display. When the engine start button is pressed, however, the veneer in the middle of the dashboard glides silently forward and rotates to reveal Bentley’s largest-ever touchscreen, a 12.3” highdefinition-quality digital MMI display, elegantly designed by Bentley with a customer-configurable home screen with three windows able to display the driver’s preferred functions, for example, navigation, media and telephone. The user interface is designed to be akin to a modern mobile phone and menus are structured to be instantly intuitive. The third side on the Bentley Rotating Display reveals three elegant analogue dials displaying outside temperature, a compass and chronometer. Such an innovative use of traditional elements underscores Bentley’s unique commitment to the past and the future, and offers customers the choice of digital or analogue display or clean, calm cabin. The new Continental benefits from features designed to keep both driver and passengers connected at all times. Apple CarPlay, the smartest and quickest way to integrate the functionality of Apple devices in a car is connected via a USB port. Customer journeys are streamlined with features designed to improve navigation. Online search, powered by Google makes finding destinations simple, while real-time traffic information keeps the driver informed of current length or changes in congestion. In emergency situations, Private eCall provides instant access to emergency services for ultimate peace of mind when travelling.

Exceptional Optionality including a Tweed Convertible Roof The all-new Continental GT Convertible redefines personalisation with paint, leather, veneer and lifestyle options that are virtually unlimited and tailored to the individual. The standard palette alone comprises 17 exterior paint colours, with up to 70 hues available in the extended range. There are also 15 luxurious carpet options, eight different handcrafted veneers (with a further four dual veneer options) and 15 choices of interior trim hide, which means that customers are able to specify their own choice of luxury finish. Seven exterior roof colours are available, including for the first time a contemporary interpretation of traditional British tweed. Black, Blue, Claret and Grey are among the other options. Furthermore, eight interior roof liner finishes are offered, ranging from New Red to Magnolia. The unique Z-fold convertible roof system represents a major improvement both in terms of refinement and packaging. The roof, with its sealing system improvements and acoustic treatments, contributes to a threedecibel reduction in overall noise levels compared to its predecessor at typical cruising speeds. An entirely new combination of roof insulating materials and operating mechanism, combined with sealing system improvements and acoustic treatments, have created a Convertible Grand Tourer that is as quiet as the previous generation Continental GT Coupe. Two technology option packs are offered at launch: City Specification for urban journeys and the Touring Specification for long-distance driving, both curated to optimise the customer experience. City Specification includes hands-free boot opening, pedestrian warning, traffic-sign recognition and city braking systems as well as a top-view camera. The Touring Specification pack, meanwhile, offers adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, active lane assist, a heads-up display, night vision with an infrared camera, and pre-sense braking. The Mulliner Driving Specification adds a more sporting look to the car with 22” lightweight forged alloy wheels, unique ‘diamond in diamond’ quilting, embroidered Bentley emblems, additional veneer options, a jewelled-finish fuel filler, sports pedals and indented leather headliner.

Customers can also choose personalised stitching in the front and rear of the car and personalised treadplates. As with all Bentleys, the Continental GT Convertible can also be handed over to the highly skilled and dedicated craftspeople at Mulliner, Bentley’s personal commissioning division, who will respond to bespoke customer requirements. Sublime Power: The Beating Heart of Bentley The all-new Continental GT Convertible is offered at launch with Bentley’s 6.0-litre, W12 TSI engine. Designed, developed and handbuilt in Crewe, it is the most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world. The new powertrain uses the very latest engine management technology, with 300 million software calculations per second. It produces 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) of torque, accelerating the Convertible to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds), on to a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph). The W12 TSI combines high-pressure direct fuel injection with lowpressure injection. The combination of these two systems maximises refinement, lowers particulate emissions and optimises power and torque delivery. [WLTP drive cycle: fuel consumption, mpg (l/100km) - Combined 20.2 (14.0). Combined CO₂- 317g/km. NEDC drive cycle equivalent: fuel consumption, mpg (l/100km) – Combined 22.8 (12.4). Combined CO₂ - 284g/km.] The new engine utilises Start-Stop technology and, in Bentley’s advanced application, coasting is also made possible. The engine rests not only when the vehicle is stationary but also at near-to-stop speeds. Bentley’s Variable Displacement system shuts down half of the engine under defined conditions. Intake and exhaust valves, fuel injection and ignition are all shut down on defined cylinders, with the engine running as a six-cylinder for improved efficiency. Significantly, a new dual-mass flywheel replaces the torque converter, to dampen out the oscillations of the driveline and provide a fittingly smooth power delivery for luxury touring. 64 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
The dual-clutch eight-speed transmission provides smooth acceleration and impressively quick gearshifts, hallmarks of the Continental GT character, as well as combined fuel economy of 22.8 mpg (UK) or 12.4 L/100 km (NEDC combined). A new Active All-Wheel-Drive System replaces the traditional 40:60 power delivery split between front and rear wheels respectively, instead varying the front-to-rear torque split dependent upon the driving situation. Unrivalled Grand Touring Ride and Handling The third generation of Continental GT Convertible features Bentley Dynamic Ride, an advanced 48-volt roll control system for unrivalled car control. The system controls and adjusts the electronic actuators on the anti-roll bar of each axle and so improves handling and ride comfort, as well as making the car feel lighter and more precise. This system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre-to-road contact to deliver class-leading ride comfort and exceptional handling. While conventional anti-roll bars present a compromise between body control and ride comfort, Bentley’s active system provides variable torsional resistance, allowing the Continental GT Convertible to be both dynamically capable and comfortable for all occupants at all times. The use of a 48-volt system results in silent, instantaneous responses and sufficient power on hand to deal with all road surfaces. Through Bentley’s Drive Dynamics Control different modes can be selected: Comfort mode, Bentley mode or Sport mode; the suspension, engine, gearbox and other chassis systems will modify to match the selected drive mode. Alternatively, the driver can personalise his or her own dynamic settings. The air suspension on the new Continental GT Convertible uses threechamber air springs which give the car 60 per cent more air volume in the softest setting than the previous model. This allowed Bentley’s engineers more scope for tuning the suspension to improve the ride comfort and dynamic character of the car.
NEWS
The system offers the scope to vary from sporting spring stiffness to luxury limousine refinement depending upon which mode the driver has selected. As a foundation for this impressive handling, the Continental GT Convertible boasts a body-in-white structure that manages to be both stiffer and lighter than its predecessor. This five per cent improvement in torsional rigidity and 20 per cent reduction in structural weight are achievable thanks to the intelligent utilisation of aluminium and high-tensile steel in the platform. Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) is also featured on the Continental GT Convertible. The new system improves feedback to the driver, while providing isolation from unwanted road disturbances. The steering system features a variable rack ratio, allowing increased response with higher steering angles to aid manoeuvrability whilst maintaining excellent stability at high speeds. Another key feature is the latest-generation Continuous Damping Control (CDC), which constantly adjusts the damper forces to optimise comfort. The system continually measures the velocity and distance between the wheels and the body at each corner and also adjusts the air volume in the springs if necessary to ensure the optimum balance of comfort and handling. Both front and rear axles are of a lightweight aluminium construction, with multilink design at the front and rear. The braking system is the most powerful iron system ever fitted to a Bentley, with a total of 28 pistons. Front brake discs measuring 420 mm are a two-piece construction utilising a cast-iron friction ring and aluminium mounting bell. Front calipers feature ten pistons each, while rear calipers contain four pistons each that clamp 380 mm single-piece discs. Brakes of this scale provide the reliable, repeatable stopping performance inherently important to a 200+ mph sporting Grand Tourer.Bentley has worked together with Pirelli to create bespoke tyres for the new Continental GT Convertible right from the very beginning of the design phase.
The car runs exclusively on Pirelli P Zero tyres, using a different tyre size between front and rear axles for the first time, to enhance dynamic ability. During the development process, Pirelli’s engineers sat alongside their counterparts from Bentley, driving and refining the car-tyre package until the perfect balance was reached between performance and comfort. The latest material compounds help the tyre respond more directly to driver inputs, ensuring a dynamic experience that is balanced and communicative. The P Zero tyre fitted to the Bentley also has Pirelli’s Noise Cancelling System which reduces road noise coming into the cabin. At the same time, rolling resistance is also improved on the latest P Zero tyres, creating less friction against the road without compromising grip. As a result, both wet and dry grip represent a step forward, with a noticeably reduced risk of aquaplaning.

Larger air intakes optimise the cooling of the V8 twin-turbo engine which is capable of delivering 650 hp (478 kW) and 850 Nm of torque. The overall look is completed by the rear wing, the lateral racing exhausts with a new hexagonal design, and 21” single-nut aluminium alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli tires. The development of the racing configuration has also led to a 25% weight reduction compared with the production model. The light weight, along with the raised set-up and torsional stiffening provided by a roll cage integrated in the frame, contribute to making the Urus ST-X Concept a race car for track and off-road use without compromise. Its track debut will take place during the 2019 Lamborghini World Finals.

he year 2018 has been a good one for SUVs. We have seen a fresh new SUV called the Urus from the house of Lamborghini, new generation SUVs from BMW, Audi and even Maserati. It seems every automobile brand is in a competitive race to overshadow their rivals. Which is why Maserati came up with not one but two versions of their Levante SUV. The 2019 Maserati Levante GTS and the 2019 Maserati Levante Trofeo. What is the defining factor between the two variants? We will come to that later but first, let’s take a look at the SUV’s exterior.
TROFEO
72 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
F E AT U R E
EXTERIOR Maserati’s design team has not made many changes to the Levante’s exterior design. The slight changes that have been made are only visible to the keen eye. Have a look at the front fascia and you will find that almost everything is same except for the front bumper and the grille. The bumper in both the Trofeo and GTS has a wider opening to allow more air to pass through. While the GTS’s bumper is of the same color as the rest of the body, the Trofeo has carbon fiber highlights on it. This, in the words of FCA’s design chief Klaus Busse, is because “We are living in a world not only of fake news, but a world of fake air intakes, fake outlets, and even fake exhausts,”. Staying true to that claim, Klaus has given both the vehicles a real quad exhaust system. You can tell the Trofeo apart from the GTS thanks to its hood vents, a Trofeo badge on the D-pillar, red-colored intake manifolds and red valve covers.
ENGINE The biggest change for the 2019 Levante is under its hood. The Levante now runs on a Ferrari inspired 3.8-liter V-8 engine which is built by Ferrari but is slightly different in design than the stock Ferrari V-8. This V-8 is similar to the one used in the Quattroporte GTS but has slight changes in the form of brand-new camshafts, valves, pistons, and connecting rods. This engine inside the Levante is twinned with twin turbos. However, the GTS and the Trofeo have different power outputs. The GTS pushes out 542 horsepower and 729 Nm of torque whereas the more performance-ready Trofeo purges out 582 horsepower and 729 Nm of torque. Both the SUVs are teamed up with a ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic gearbox that takes power to the rear wheels however power can be transferred to all the four wheels when needed. The Trofeo gets an added advantage over the GTS thanks to different tuning which lets it absorb more boost in the higher rev range. The change to the V8 engine is a big one for the Maserati Levante. The 2019 V-8 Levante GTS is capable of doing 0-100 kmh in 4 seconds while the Levante Trofeo does the same slightly better in 3.7 seconds. Top speed for both SUVs is in excess of 290 kmh.

ROAD PERFORMANCE
ALL IN ALL, YOU CAN EXPECT A GOOD ROAD GRIP WITH AN EXCELLENT AND HIGHLY RESPONSIVE STEERING WHEEL
The 2019 Maserati Levante wouldn’t be complete without driving enhancements. Thankfully, Maserati didn’t shy away from improving a few weak points from their 2018 model. The air suspension and dampers are the same from last year which is supported by the Normal and Sports modes. The Sports mode lowers the SUV by 0.4 inches but to take things to the next level, Maserati has added a Corsa mode to the higher-end Trofeo. The Corsa mode lowers the Levante Trofeo an additional 1-inch and to top it off gives you the liberty to use the launch control function. The lowered Levante Trofeo grips the road well, however, the GTS with its Normal mode gives way to some sway on high-speeds. Switch to Sports mode and the huge 21- inch tires (22-inch also available in Levante Trofeo) tell a different story. All in all, you can expect a good road grip with an excellent and highly responsive steering wheel that would give you the control you need.

INTERIOR The interior has a similar appearance again with only slight changes from last year. The Trofeo variant gets a sweet package though with the extra badging and styling to make it look sportier and more appealing. There is even a special clock on the dashboard which pops up thanks to the Pieno Fiore leather that surrounds it and most of the SUV’s interior along with a Harman Kardon audio system. Other than that, the GTS and the Trofeo share largely the same interior. The GTS has an all-black finish which is not really exciting to the eye.
THE GTS AND THE TROFEO SHARE LARGELY THE SAME INTERIOR
76 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
PRICE & CONCLUSION Price and Conclusion The starting price for the Levante GTS is QAR 505,000 and for the Levante Trofeo is QAR 628,000. The Trofeo comes with a handful of extra features and it is a limited version vehicle which means not everyone will be able to get their hands on it. It seems Maserati has tried to win two battles with one vehicle. The GTS variant comes more on par with the likes of Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes G-Class and Range Rover. The Maserati Levante Trofeo is an attempt to challenge top-tier SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga SUV and the Lamborghini Urus, both of which are considerably expensive than the Levante Trofeo. Therefore, for those looking in terms of these SUVs the Trofeo is a good choice since it is cheaper, it offers an exceptional weight to power ratio and it holds the famous Ferrari V-8. It might not make the signature Ferrari V-8 roar but you can expect something exceptional given that the quad exhausts are working and real. In essence, there are a few better options available in the SUV sector that can be considered over the 2019 Maserati Levante SUV but none can give you the exquisite Maserati flagship experience.

hen you’re surrounded by cars most of the time and you review cars for a living, you’re rather spoiled. Not a lot of things get you excited anymore. Sure, you feel grateful for what you get to do on a daily basis and you appreciate it, but the truth of the matter is that most modern cars just don’t get your adrenaline flowing. They’re filled with technology and all kinds of safety features but have lost touch with what it means to be fun and involve the driver. So, naturally, when you get invited to a BMW event held at the Bahrain International Circuit, and the briefing says you’ll be driving the new M2 Competition and M5 Competition out of all things, you don’t hesitate in saying “Yes, please!”.
80 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
BMW M2 Competition The BMW M2 is probably the most exciting small car currently on the market. Just think of its main rivals and you’ll no doubt agree with me. Most of its opponents have four-cylinders (A45, CLA45, RS3, Golf R) and either front or all-wheel drive. In that regard, the BMW M2 is the only true driver’s car with a six-cylinder and rear-wheel drive, the hallowed ground for car enthusiasts. The BMW M2 was initially designed as a successor to the now-iconic BMW 1M Coupe, but in terms of power-to-weight, it was actually closer to its bigger brother, the M4.
R ORAD E V I TE R WI P
Although the rumors of a new BMW M2 CS model which would slot above the regular M2 turned out to be just that, rumors, we did, in fact, get an upgraded car in the form of the M2 Competition. And if you thought that this was just a marketing trick by BMW, a gimmick if you will, you’re in for a treat. The Competition brings a lot of new stuff to the table, including a vastly different power unit.First thing’s first thought, let’s start with the exterior. The twin-kidney grille is now larger, the splitter has been revised and the honeycomb mesh is slightly different. Both the headlights and the taillights use BMW’s new adaptive LED technology too.
The 19-inch bespoke rims reduce unsprung weight by quite a margin as BMW claims. Changes are less obvious inside, as the M2 Competition doesn’t get a roll-cage or special race-spec seats. Instead, it features a redesigned instrument cluster, red M1/M2 buttons on the wheel and carbon-fiber trim as standard. You can also spot several M2 badges scattered around the cabin easier. The real changes the Competition package brings to the table are obvious once you lift the bonnet. The 3-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six is actually the same engine as the one found in the M4.

RE VIE W
THIS ISN’T JUST AN M2 THAT’S “BEEN SLIGHTLY TWEAKED, IT’S A WHOLE NEW BEAST ” In the Competition, it now makes 404 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. That’s an additional 39 horsepower over the standard M2 and just 16 horsepower shy of the old E92 M3, although thanks to some 170 more Nm of torque, it’s a lot faster than the last M3. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dualclutch. The latter is quicker but the former is more fun and involving. Changes don’t stop there, however. The Competition also features a high-precision carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic strut and bulkhead strut for increased rigidity, a new cooling system, and a two-pass exhaust. The brakes are identical as the normal M2 but the M Sport optional brakes means the Competition gets larger discs and calipers. On the track, the changes are immediately apparent. This isn’t just an M2 that’s been slightly tweaked, it’s a whole new beast. It wants to change direction at the slightest turn of the wheel. It’s actually more agile and nimble than the M4 at low-speed corners. The grip coming out of turns is mega, so you can use all of the available power. Naturally, if you want to be a hooligan and light up the rear wheels you can, even in third gear. A mountain of torque means it effortlessly picks up from anywhere in the rev range. Well done BMW, you’ve truly outdone yourself. If anything, the Competition moniker is misleading as it hints at a mere upgrade package, but the M2 Competition feels like an entirely new model in the lineup.

Power delivery is instantaneous and the “steering-wheel gives tons of feedback ”
BMW M5 Competition We then got to drift the M5 on water, and boy was that a profound experience. Naturally, like the M2, the M5 Competition gets a host of interior and exterior upgrades over the standard car (new wheels, black diffusers, adjustable sport seats, etc.), but that’s not what really matters. With the new M5 Competition, as with any previous M5, it’s the drivetrain that counts. And what a drivetrain it is. The revised 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 now churns out 614 horsepower and, get this, 750 Nm of torque. The official figures are as follows: 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and a governed top speed of 300 km/h. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed M-Steptronic transmission and BMW’s brilliant xDrive system. The latter can be switched off, turning the M5 into a proper rear-wheel drive beast. Expect tire spin in third and even fourth if you really want it to. On a wet skidpan, with the xDrive system, it’s thoroughly planted. It will drift if you really provoke it, but the long wheelbase coupled with that AWD system means it’s so predictable anyone can master it. It breaks traction in a way you expect it to, and it’s so easy to get it back in line I kept forgetting I was driving on a wet surface. Turn the systems and the AWD system off and it’s a different ball game though. It’s still as predictable and adjustable, but it does require a bit more talent to keep it from swapping ends. Power delivery is instantaneous and the steering-wheel gives tons of feedback. This is without a doubt the best M5 ever made, both subjectively and objectively. BMW has just put Mercedes on the back-foot with the new M5 Competition.

hey say that he who laughs last laughs the best. Although Rolls-Royce was the last premium manufacturer to join the luxury SUV market, they overshadowed both Bentley and Lamborghini in their effort. They arrived fashionably late to the party, but boy oh boy do they came out ready to play. To test Rolls-Royce’s new model we flew all the way to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA. This is the detailed story of how our trip went.
88 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
Introduction Rumors of a Rolls-Royce SUV have been circulating the internet for years. With the insane popularity of crossovers and SUVs, even manufacturers like Bentley and Lamborghini joined the battle with the Bentayga and the Urus, respectively. Although both the Bentley and the Lambo were greeted by the public with a warm welcome, people were skeptical about a Rolls-Royce SUV.

IT’S A LARGE CAR, BUT IT ISN’T BULKY OR OVERWHELMING ON THE ROAD
“
Think of it as a Phantom with more ride height and off-road capabilities
After all, Rolls is famous for unprecedented luxury and comfort, but not sportiness. And what is a sport utility vehicle if not sporty? We then get to the question of the name. Most of Rolls’ cars have an evocative name: Phantom, Wraith, Ghost, Dawn. The Cullinan gets its name after the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever, found in 1905. Naming your car after the biggest, most expensive rock ever dug up, you have to be pretty positive it’s going to turn out great. So, the question is, has it?
”
Exterior The Cullinan isn’t the most beautiful SUV ever made, but it’s certainly one of the most striking. It sits with presence and demeanor that other SUVs struggle to match. It’s not flashy or aggressive like the new Urus, but we bet it would turn just as many heads if not more parked next to the big Lambo. Think of it as a Phantom with more ride height and off-road capabilities, which we’ll get to later on in the article.

MOST OF THE CONTROLS ARE HIDDEN, AND THOSE THAT ARE VISIBLE ARE BEAUTIFULLY LAID OUT
The Cullinan hasn’t lost any of the raw DNA that makes a Rolls, a Rolls. If anything, it’s even better looking. The current Rolls-Royce design language lends itself beautifully to a large SUV body shape. Trust us when we say this, but pictures don’t do the thing any justice. They don’t portray how high or how wide it is in real life, simply because it’s so nicely proportioned. Make no mistake, this is a behemoth of a vehicle. Interior This is Rolls-Royce territory. The true mark of a Rolls is how luxurious and how sumptuous it feels once your inside. In that essence, the Cullinan is in a class of one. When you first get in it you almost feel like you’re climbing inside a plush vault. It feels that isolated from the outside world. It’s difficult to explain, but it’s genuinely like stepping into a bunker to protect you from everything and everyone.
Engine: V12 - 6.75 L TwinTurbo Horsepower: 571 HP Torque: 850 Nm 0 - 100 KM: 5.2 s Transmission: 8 speed auto Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive Top Speed: 250 KM/h Weight: 2,660 KG
MEET THE CAR
The second thing you notice is how simple and minimalistic it is. Most of the controls are hidden, and those that are visible are beautifully laid out. No excess and no clutter. The dashboard looks rather ordinary compared to the one in the Phantom, but it suits the SUV’s personality perfectly. Everything you touch and everything you see is soft to the touch. This being a Rolls-Royce, you can specify practically any material you want, so I won’t get into that any deeper. maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 14 91
C O V E R STO RY
A lot of SUVs are plagued with external noise protrusion, whether that’s wind, tire or engine noise. Not so with the Cullinan. RollsRoyce has gone to such great lengths to ensure the cabin is utterly sound-proof that they’ve actually sealed off the passenger cabin space from the boot space. That’s right, the passenger compartment has been hermetically partitioned off from the cargo compartment. In case you were wondering, that’s a world-first. We then get to what Rolls calls the “Viewing Suite”.
92 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
It’s essentially a feature (again, world-first) which allows Cullinan owners to extend two rear-facing seats on the tailgate at the push of a button and enjoy the view or have a picnic, wherever they might be in the world. Naturally, the seats which are usually hidden beneath the boot are finished in leather. Not sure how many Cullinan owners will ever use them, but we tried them out and they’re not a gimmick. They actually work brilliantly.
C O V E R S TO RY
Engine and Performance Here’s what you really want to know, however: how does the Cullinan drive? Well, for starters, we will say that it’s rather brisk for something of its size. The 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 makes 571 horsepower and an astonishing 850 Nm. So, even though it weighs 2,660 kilograms, the mountain of torque and a capable all-wheel drive system make it eager to get going once you put your foot all the way down the accelerator. Not as fast a Wraith, but certainly faster than it has any right being as an SUV.
The sprint to 100 km/h takes 5.2 seconds and it will keep on going to a governed top speed of 250 km/h. After driving it on the road for quite a while we took the Cullinan off-road to see whether it lives up to its moniker as a proper SUV. Is this uber-luxurious giant a highway cruiser or can it actually perform? Once you get over your fear of scratching a QAR1,600,000+ SUV, you quickly realize it’s a lot more capable than you think. It’s got great ground clearance, a low front overhang and plenty of grunt.

IT’S A LARGE CAR, BUT IT ISN’T BULKY OR OVERWHELMING ON THE ROAD
Exterior I like the way the G80 looks. I’ll start out by saying that. Genesis has got the proportions absolutely nailed. It’s a large car, but it isn’t bulky or overwhelming on the road. The long elongated hood, the long overhangs, the extended sloping roofline… everything has been designed to make the car as elegant and flowing as possible. If you like a car that’s a bit understated but still has lots of presence, the G80 Sport offers exactly that. The front fascia is dominated by this huge grille just below the Genesis logo. The front bumper is flanked by large air dams on each side, and a pretty substantial opening at the bottom too. The headlights do have some Mercedes-Benz-like elements, but they’re completely bespoke units. It’s a weird mix between luxury and sportiness. A good type of weird mix.

THE MOUNTAIN OF TORQUE AND A CAPABLE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM MAKE IT EAGER TO GET GOING ONCE YOU PUT YOUR FOOT ALL THE WAY DOWN THE ACCELERATOR
We put the Cullinan through its paces to see how good the magic carpet ride really is off-road, only to be pleasantly surprised. We didn’t expect any sort of compliance off-road given how harsh the terrain is, but the Cullinan never got out of character. Bar a little wobble when going over a big rock or something, you could hardly tell we were driving off-road. We’re certain 99.99% of Cullinan owners will never use it the way we did, but it’s great to know Rolls has prepared it for any occasion. Conclusion Is it the best SUV ever built? It’s a pretty bold claim, but if price isn’t an issue, then we struggle to see how you’d match it. It’s certainly not the sportiest and it drinks fuel, but in terms of luxury and comfort, everything else is a distant second.

FACTS ABOUT THE FERRARI 812 SUPERFAST
maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 14 99
F E AT U R E
1 THE MOST POWERFUL ROAD-GOING ENGINE IN THE MARQUE’S HISTORY At the development stage, the engineers set themselves the goal of exceeding the specific power output of the F12berlinetta’s V12 which itself delivered class-topping performance. To do so, they decided to focus their efforts principally on optimising the intake system and combustion efficiency to fully exploit the increase in the engine’s displacement from 6.2 to 6.5 litres. These aspects increased the maximum amount of air that could be drawn into the engine (and thus its power output) thereby boosting its efficiency. The development process resulted in a maximum power output of 800 cv at 8,500 rpm, a new benchmark for the Ferrari range, in addition to a specific power output of 123 cv/l, a completely unprecedented figure for an engine front-mounted in a production car. Its high pressure injection system also improves nebulisation of the injected fuel thus dramatically reducing the amount of particulates emitted when the catalytic converter is warming up, ensuring the engine complies with all emissions regulations. The engine’s maximum power-to-fuel consumption ratio has also been improved, attesting to the engine’s exceptional efficiency in urban driving contexts.
2 FITTED WITH AN EVOLVED F1 DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION The new 812 Superfast is fitted with Ferrari’s F1 dual-clutch transmission which has been further evolved to meet the car’s track driving performance targets and cope with the boost in maximum revs to 8,900 rpm. The gear ratios on all of the gears have been shortened by an average of 6% to exploit the extra performance and higher revs to the fullest as well as to improve the car’s acceleration without compromising pick-up in higher gears. There was particular focus on calibrating the gear-shift strategy to enhance the car’s sportiness, further slashing response times and creating a feeling of massive power and speed both in terms of longitudinal acceleration and auditory perception of the rising rpms. In both up- and down-shifts, the transition time has been reduced by 30%. Combined with the shortened gear ratios, these modifications, mean that occupants will instantly feel the car’s powerful response to the throttle. On the track, this sharpened response equates to more down-shifts in the same time interval, when the driver uses the multi-down function (keeping the steering wheel-mounted Down shift paddle depressed with the Manettino in Sport position).

F E AT U R E
3 THE 812 SUPERFAST IS THE FIRST FERRARI TO SPORT EPS (ELECTRIC POWER STEERING) This is in line with Ferrari tradition and is used to fully exploit the potential of the car’s performance by integrating it with all of its electronic vehicle dynamics controls. This solution saw the introduction of the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system (PCV) combines electric front-wheel steering assistance with the mechanical concept built around tyre dimensions and the rear-wheel steering. All integrated with the vehicle dynamics control systems based on Version 5.0 of the SSC, with the aim of improving the 812 Superfast’s agility and response time to steering wheel inputs. The car’s suspension and elastic set-up are stiffer to minimise body roll, particularly around the rear axle, further limiting understeer and allowing the driver to exploit the car’s performance potential more easily and fully on the limit. The Brembo Extreme Design brakes are the most efficient ever developed by Ferrari delivering absolutely unprecedented stopping distances, improving the F12berlinetta’s performance over 100 metres by 11%.
4 THE 812 SUPERFAST DELIVERS RECORD 1.72 AERODYNAMIC COEFFICIENT VALUE The aerodynamic coefficient values delivered by the 812 Superfast are a significant improvement on those of the F12berlinetta. In fact, the car delivers a record figure of 1.72, 53% higher than the previous model. Contributing to this was a 65% increase in downforce to 210 kg at 200 km/h. Mobile aero solutions, whether mechanically activated (active mobile aerodynamics) or activated by the pressure of the air itself (passive mobile aerodynamics), guarantee very low drag values. Because of the powerful suction created by the rear spoiler, the rear diffuser has been completely redesigned to enhance its extraction power. Firstly, the diffuser’s trailing edge now features a wing in a deep recess created in the bumper. Air flows from both the lower and upper surfaces strike the splitter which extends across the entire width of the diffuser, boosting the downforce generated by the latter by 12%. Since the rear diffuser is one of the main contributors to downforce generation and the resulting drag, it has also been given a system of three active flaps which rotate to a 14° angle in the minimal drag configuration to completely stall the diffuser, thereby significantly reducing overall drag.

F E AT U R E
5 THE 812 SUPERFAST DISPLAYS AN ALLURING FASTBACK SLEEKNESS It has a two-box design with a high tail reminiscent of the glorious 365 GTB4 (Daytona) of 1969, visually lowering an aggressive rear spoiler designed to guarantee downforce. The draped design of the flanks visually shortens the tail and is characterised by sharply slanted crease lines and impressively muscular wheelarches that imbue the 812 Superfast with power and aggression. Full-LED headlights integrated into the design of the sculpted air intakes on the bonnet also emphasise that front muscle, integrating with, and wrapping around the front wheelarch. At the rear, four round tail-lights inspired by Ferrari tradition emphasise a design crafted around horizontal lines and give the 812 Superfast a broad, imposing stance, visually lowering both spoiler and the very compact cabin without, however, sacrificing its space or that of the boot.
6 THE 812 SUPERFAST FEATURES A RADICALLY REDESIGNED INTERIOR This is to imbue it with an even sportier character. Ultra-taut surfaces are deliberately layered and broken up to create voids with the result that the main elements seem to float. The horizontal dash loops stylishly around the central air vents for a sophisticated, sculptural, yet supremely stylish look. The driver zone and central recesses featuring contrasting trim to further underscore their dynamic forms. The steering wheel and its commands, the satellite pods on either side of it and the interplay of volumes and contrasting materials, combine to create an extreme cockpit. The seats differ from and contrast with the rest of the interior surfaces. Taught forms and cleverly structured volumes combine with superb ergonomics and a light sporty language to yield a top-of-the-range seat.

TABLE MANNERS PART I
By: Dr. Marie Abou Rached
Have you ever got invited for a formal lunch/dinner and you didn’t know which rules to follow? Or how to use utensils? Do u know that the way people eat can tell a lot of things about them?
Table manners are very esssential in a formal and in an unformal dinner. It helps others and us to be more comfortable and more confident while eating. Table manners needs knowledge and practice on daily basis so it becomes a habit and easy to be applied in public.
• What are the most essential aspects to be taken into consideration while receiving a formal invitation? a-To make sure about the date, the time and the location of the event. b-To respect the dresss code. c-To respect the term RSVP.
104 ISSUE 14 / maqinaonline.com
• What does the term RSVP mean? The term RSVP means “répondez s’il vous plaît” or please respond. It is advicable to reply within 24 hours of receiving the invitation. A maximium time of reply is 72 hours. In case of food allergy, it is preferable to indicate it in the reply. It is not a good manner to do not respond to the invitation, or to do not show up in case of confirmation of attendance.
D AS S ECT H BO I OAR ND
• WHAT IS THE BEST BODY POSTURE WHILE SITTING ON THE TABLE? -Sit on the table with high self-confidence with a straight back and joined legs. -Don’t cross the legs while sitting on the table. -Keep your elbows off the table. While eating, keep the elbows close to your sides. -Place the purse behind you on the chair, or on the floor at your feet (for ladies).
• What does it mean a Napkin and what is its utility? Napkin is a piece of cloth placed on the plate or infront of it. TIPS FUEL CONSUMPTION Fuel prices are increasing by the day. While new car technologies help you decrease the fuel consumption, you as a driver play a great role in saving fuel. Here some tips that will help increase the mile per gallon consumed in your car:
Warm up your car wisely It is important to warm up your engine specially in the winter. But when the engine is being warmed while the car is not moving it is consuming fuel with zero kilometers in return. A better and more efficient way to warm your engine is to let it idle for 30 seconds than start moving slowly until it reaches its normal operating temperature. Using this method not only warm up every component of the car, but also increases the mile per gallon consumed. Acceleration A car engine consumes fuel the most while it is accelerating, The faster you accelerate the more fuel you burn. Therefore when leaving an intersection, accelerate gently as if you are holding a cup of coffee, and once you reach the desired speed, stop accelerating and maintain your speed until you reach the next stop. Unnecessary engine idle The old myth say “it is better to keep your engine running than to shut it off for a couple of minutes and restart it “ New studies found that if you’re going to stop for more than 30 seconds, the engine consumes more fuel idling than if you shut it off and restart it. Therefore if you are running down to the supermarket to pick up a bottle of milk and you’re going to spend few minutes inside it is better to shut off your engine and restart it when you’re done. Drive light The heavier your car, the more energy your engine needs to move that weight. Therefore, check your car for unnecessary items and remove them if they are not being used like the third row seats.
