McLAREN DOHA UNVEILS THE FIRST CAR IN THE SPORTS SERIES RANGE TO VIP AUDIENCE

M

cLaren Doha unveiled yesterday evening the latest in the range of high performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive, the McLaren 570S, at an exclusive invite-only event held at its showroom in Al Muftah Building. A select group of owners, business leaders and media were treated to the first look of McLaren’s newest addition to its stable in the company of Ian Gorsuch, Regional Director McLaren Automotive Middle East & Africa. Launched in New York earlier this year, the 570S is a pure sports car, with driver optimised layout and electrifying performance, and shares its DNA with the McLaren Super Series and Ultimate Series that sit above it in the range hierarchy. The Sports Series introduces McLaren race-derived technologies and design values to a new segment and audience. Like every McLaren, the performance of the 570S Coupé is breath-taking. It combines, as its names suggests, a power

output of 570PS (562bhp) with light weight construction to give a class leading power-to-weight ratio of 434PS per tonne. The 570S accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, while 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in just 9.5 seconds with the pace not letting up till the car reaches a top speed of 328 km/h (204mph). “The Sports Series is an exciting addition to our range, which now offers superb performance to a whole new audience for us in this region,” said Ian Gorsuch, Regional Director MEAF at McLaren Automotive. “We are delighted to be able to preview this sought-after new addition to our threetier range for the first time in Qatar, and we know that it will make a big impact in the Middle East’s sport’s car segment.” Orders have already been received for the Sports Series and production is well advanced, with first customer deliveries expected to Middle East customers during the first quarter of 2015.

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN INTRODUCED TO CUSTOMERS IN QATAR AT EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW EVENT Rolls-Royce Dawn, the new benchmark in open-top luxury motoring made an exclusive appearance in Qatar this week, ahead of its public reveal in the capital at the Qatar Motor Show 2016. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha, the sole authorised dealership for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in the Qatar, showcased the beautiful vehicle to its esteemed clientele at a private event held at the Fire Station Artist in Residence on 7th December 2015. Commenting on the preview of the open-top, super-luxury car in Doha, General Manager of Alfardan Automobiles, Ihab Allam, said: “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a brand that is synonymous with luxury and the Rolls-Royce Dawn provides the most social, uncompromised open-top motoring experience in the world. The beautiful new motor car has been very well received by our discerning clientele so far – we are confident that it will continue to drive the success of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha forward into 2016 and beyond.” Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” Compromise is not a word recognised in the Rolls-Royce lexicon. Indeed the company continues to live by the clarion cry of co14 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

founder Sir Henry Royce to “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough. The final part of that maxim – “Accept nothing nearly right or good enough” has guided the Rolls-Royce design and engineering teams as they have worked to initiate a new age for open-top, super-luxury motoring. In a sector exclusively populated by the biggest of automotive compromises – the 2+2 seat configuration – Rolls-Royce accepted no compromise. And so, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, the world’s only true modern four-seater super-luxury drophead, is born. The new Rolls-Royce Dawn stands apart from its stable mates, featuring 80% unique body panels. Indeed such attention has been paid to ensuring this amazing new dawn for super-luxury motoring delivers on its promise, even the tyres that connect the new Rolls-Royce Dawn to the road are new. The Silent Ballet Specific engineering and manufacturing attention has been paid to thecreation of the Dawn’s roof.

LO C A L N E W S

Unheard of anywhere in the modern motor industry until now, the roof of the Rolls-Royce Dawn delivers the silence of a Wraith when up and operates in almost complete silence in just over 20 seconds at a cruising speed of up to 50kph. Working with a fabric roof configuration, the Rolls-Royce engineering team set themselves a challenging goal which they were unwilling to compromise on – to make the quietest convertible car in the world today. This quest for silence applied to all aspects of the engineering of the new roof and by extension the new motor car. Firstly, the passengers’ on-board aural experience roof up and roof down while in motion had to be pure Rolls-Royce. The design of the roof had to be graceful, beautiful and sensuous whilst remaining one of the largest canopies to grace a convertible car. Indeed, the Dawn’s roof is the second largest fabric roof applied to a current production car, second only to that of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. transforms the Rolls-Royce Dawn, delivering a true Dawn moment. In hero specification of Midnight Sapphire exterior and Mandarin leather interior, night becomes day as rays of sunshine burst forth, bringing the inside out, joining this social space with the wider world of possibilities. It is safe to say that the new RollsRoyce Dawn is the quietest open-top car ever made. 2+2 = 4 “In the world of Rolls-Royce, day to day mathematical norms don’t always apply. That’s why I say in the case of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, 2+2 does not equal.4 Giles Taylor, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Studying the open-top motor car sector, and specifically its high-value luxury niche, it became apparent to Rolls16 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

Royce’s designers that customerswere being short-changed. The myopic focus on one specific configuration – the 2+2 setup – was, in the view of Rolls-Royce, a compromise too far. A 2+2 is a configuration with seating that favours the driver and passenger in the front leaving two smaller seats for occasional passengers or children in the rear. The result is a sector populated exclusively by open-top cars that RollsRoyce would consider compromised and ‘anti-social’. “At Rolls-Royce, we pride ourselves as creators of fine motor cars that also serve as social spaces,” comments Taylor. “The idea of creating a car like Dawn that can be used in comfort by only two adults on a day to day basis is anathema. In creating Dawn we have accepted no compromise to the comfort maqinaonline.com / 2016 MARCH 17

and luxury of four adults who want to travel together in the pinnacle of style.” A whole new car Contrary to media speculation, the new RollsRoyce Dawn is not a Wraith drophead. 80% of the exterior body panels of the new Dawn are newly designed to accommodate an evolution of RollsRoyce’s design language and to encapsulate highly contemporary, four-seat super-luxury drophead architecture. The aim was clear. To do what no other car manufacturer had achieved so far – make a car that looks as beautiful with its roof up as with it down. One could almost say that the result of the design team’s restless endeavours has been to make the new Rolls-Royce Dawn two cars in one. Roof down, the sexiness of the Rolls-Royce Dawn is even more apparent. From the side the steep rake of the windscreen, the swage line that flows over the rear haunches plus the high beltline that rises along the profile give the impression of effortless swiftness. The very same rising beltline wraps around the rear passenger cabin akin to the collar of a jacket pulled up to protect the neck. The deck itself is an amazing work of modern craftsmanship. Clothed in open-pore Canadel panelling that traces the horse-shoe shape of the rear cabin, it demonstrates the great advances that the craftspeople in the Woodshop at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood have made in wood crafting technology and techniques. The wood on the deck, chosen by the customer to suit their individual taste, flows down the ‘Waterfall’ between the rear seats, and around the cabin clothing the interior door panels and enticing the owner to enter Dawn. Deliveries on the new Rolls-Royce Dawn commence in the second quarter of 2016.

EXCLUSIVE... Audi reveals five new models at the 2016 Qatar Motor Show

Audi

Middle East continues to expand its product portfolio in the region with a dynamic range of new models and latest innovations at the 2016 Qatar Motor Show. As one of the key motoring events in the Middle East, the Qatar Motor Show attracts car enthusiasts and trade professionals alike. Audi is displaying three regional premiers at this year’s show, including the first RS model in the Q series - the Audi RS Q3. The Audi SQ5 is also shown for the first time together with the new S8 plus which is the pinnacle of performance in the premium class sedan segment. Also new for Qatar are the all-new Audi R8 and the all–new Audi A4, which feature the brands latest technology innovations. For selected VIP guests, the Audi A8 Security Car is on show to impress customers with an array of outstanding protection features. Speaking at the Qatar Motor Show, Benoit Tiers, Managing Director of Audi Volkswagen Middle East said “Audi Middle East is looking forward to an exciting year in 2016 with many new models arriving in our dealerships very soon. Qatar is an important market for Audi that has shown consistent growth, and the recent opening of the new workshop for Q-Auto has ensured our customers here are given an even better customer experience. Audi is making a strong statement with the reveal of the Audi S8 plus. With a power output of 605 hp and a top speed of up to 305 km/h, the new Audi S8 plus delivers even more

enhanced driving performance. The new top model reinforces the brand’s position in the segment of premium class sedans. One strength of the large sedan is its lightweight design. Its body is made almost entirely of aluminium. The design is based on the Audi Space Frame (ASF) and weighs just 231 kg – which is the lightest among the competition. The new S8 plus reveals its position as the sportiest top model of the model series in its design detailing. The standard spoiler lip on the rear lid catches the eye. It is painted in the exterior body color, and it is also available in carbon fiber as an option. The flaps in the side air inlets and the blade on the front apron are made of carbon fiber. The mirror housings in body color are optionally available in gloss black or carbon. The Single-frame grille and double bars are in gloss black, while the honeycomb structure of the side air inlets and radiator screen are in matt black. The trim strips on the side windows and at the rear are gleam in black. Distinctive design characteristics of the S8 plus also include darkened tail lights and a gloss black diffuser insert, which has an additional carbon surround. The dual-branch sport exhaust system branches into two oval gloss black tailpipes on the left and right. As an alternative, customers can choose the S8 styling package. The second regional premiere on the Audi stand is the Audi RS Q3, which is the first RS model of the successful Q range of models: this car combines outstanding everyday practicality

with dynamic driving performance: It takes just 4.8 seconds to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. The -2.5liter five-cylinder turbo produces 340 hp and has an average fuel consumption of just 8.4 liters of fuel per 100 km. An award-winning high-performance engine, the 2.5 TFSI, is at work under the hood of the RS Q3. This five-cylinder engine has been named “International Engine of the Year” in its class for three consecutive years. The new Audi SQ5 is the third regional premier on the Audi stand. This sporty member of the Q5 family produces 354 hp and 470 Nm of torque It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h. The new Audi SQ5 is powered by a free-revving, supercharged, threeliter V6 engine with a displacement of 2,995 cc. Its compressor sits in the -90degree V of the cylinder banks and is belt-driven by the crankshaft. Two rotors inside the supercharger spin at over 20,000 rpm. The air gap between them is just a few thousandths of a millimeter. The supercharger compresses the intake air to as much as 0.8 bar; two intercoolers then cool it for greater power. The brand with the four rings also showcased the most secure Audi ever, the Audi A8 L Security car. Audi has once again further developed its armoured high-security sedan. The car will satisfy the criteria of the class VR 9 ballistic protection standard, currently the most stringent requirements for civilian high-security sedans.

The Ferrari 488 Spider is the latest chapter in Maranello’s ongoing history of open-top V8 sports cars and is Ferrari’s most powerful ever mid-rear-engined V8 car to feature the patented retractable hard top, along with the highest level of technological innovation and with innovative design. In this occasion, Charly Dagher, General Manager, Alfardan Sports Motors General Manager, said: “We are pleased to unveil the Ferrari 488 Spider at this year’s motor show. This model is an innovative and distinguished addition to the Ferrari family and a true representation of the history and excellence of the brand combining strength and luxury at once.” “We are confident that the new Ferrari 488 Spider will be received warmly in Qatar because of its excellent performance and driving comfort and go on to become one of the country’s most popular sports cars. We look forward to continue working with Alfardan Sports Motors to ensure our loyal customers and Ferrari enthusiasts are offered the latest innovations and an unparalleled service,” added Dagher. The Ferrari 488 Spider is the first RHT (Retractable Hard Top) introduced from Maranello on a car of this particular 44 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

architecture. This solution ensures lower weight (25- kg) and better cockpit comfort compared to the classic fabric softtop. Just like all previous spider versions of Ferrari’s models, this is a car that is aimed squarely at clients seeking open-air motoring pleasure in a high-performance sports car with an unmistakable Ferrari engine sound. Every area of the car has been designed to set new technological benchmarks for the sector: from the aluminium spaceframe chassis and bodyshell to the new turbo-charged V8, aerodynamics that reconcile the need for greater downforce with reduced drag along with the specific cabin air flow demands of an open-top car, and vehicle dynamics that render it fast, agile and instantly responsive. The heart of the 488 Spider Beneath the engine cover throbs the 3902 cc turbo-charged V8 that debuted just a few months ago on the 488 GTB. Its performance levels are nothing short of extraordinary: a maximum power output of 670 CV combined with maximum torque of 760 Nm at 3000 rpm send the 488 Spider sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds flat and from 0 to 200 km/h

Q ATA R MOTO R SH OW

in 8.7 seconds. This is also an exceptionally efficient engine as it is not only 100 CV more powerful than the previous naturallyaspirated V8 but also has lower CO2 emissions. The turbo V8 has a unique character, delivering increasing levels of power right across the rev range, and completely eliminating the traditional turbo lag with a throttle response time of just 0.8 seconds. This is thanks not merely to components such as the turbos, but also to a sophisticated production process only made possible by Maranello’s leading-edge facilities which are shared with the Scuderia to foster the transfer of racing technologies to the road cars. In line with Ferrari tradition, this model has its own absolutely distinctive soundtrack created using solutions such as exhaust headers with longer, equal-length piping and a flat-plane crankshaft. It was also further enhanced by an in-depth study of harmonics and tonality at different engine speeds. The sound is seductive but never invasive when the top is dropped, with both volume and clarity increasing as the engine instantly responds to the accelerator pedal and revs rise, reinforcing the sensation of massive performance.

Sculpted by the wind This is also the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever built, thanks to a series of complex aero solutions designed to guarantee optimal downforce whilst reducing drag, two normally mutually-exclusive objectives. Maranello’s engineers managed to achieve both goals simultaneously by introducing several innovative devices, including a blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody incorporating vortex generators. The air flow studies also took into account factors relating to in-car comfort. The electric glass rear wind stop can be adjusted to one of three positions to guarantee maximum comfort when the top is lowered. Fully lowering the wind stop allows the occupants to enjoy the engine soundtrack even with the roof raised regardless of the weather or driving conditions. Form and function sculpted in aluminium Designed around the concept of the retractable hard top, the 488 Spider has a spaceframe chassis made of 11 different aluminium alloys combined with other noble metals, such as magnesium, each one used in a highly specific way. This yields the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness figures as maqinaonline.com / 2016 MARCH 45

the coupé, improving the chassis’ performance by %23 over that of its predecessor. An extraordinary result, given that the roof is structural, that is only possible thanks to the expertise of the Scaglietti centre of excellence that engineers Ferrari’s aluminium chassis and bodies. The RHT folds backwards in two overlapping sections to rest flush on the engine in a very compact solution. The mechanism is exceptionally smooth and takes just 14 seconds for the top to fully retract or deploy. Working with aluminium is important not only in functional terms but also because, by tradition, it demands every detail be treated sculpturally to express the technical excellence of the project through its beauty. Cases in point are the flying buttresses which optimally channel air flows to the engine cover, the ribbing on the engine cover and the air intakes with sculpted mesh grilles which lend that area of the car a sense of incredible dynamism. To achieve this result the Ferrari Styling Centre completely reworked the aesthetics compared to the 488 GTB. Speed and control across the board 46 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

The introduction of a sophisticated simulator, similar to the one used by the Formula 1 Scuderia, allowed the human factor to influence the car’s design from the earliest stages by giving the engineers instant feedback from the test-drivers long before the first 488 prototype was physically built. To make its dynamic behaviour even more engaging, the development team honed the car’s mechanical set-up in tandem with its electronic systems which are now fully integrated with the SSC2 Side Slip Angle Control System, resulting in %12 faster acceleration out of corners than the 458 Spider. Over all, response times are %9 more rapid than the previous Spider without any compromise whatsoever being made in comfort. The car’s design was adapted to efficiently meet the typical the demands of open-top driving and use. In fact, the Spider’s dynamic behaviour is effortless on even the most challenging routes. It is remarkably easy to drive on the limit thanks to flawless handling even on the most demanding of roads.

The G 500: a new chapter of A success story Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the exclusive dealer of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, launched the new Mercedes-Benz G 4 500X4 square at Qatar Motor Show 2016. All Mercedes-Benz G-Class models will in future offer up to 16 percent more power and lower fuel consumption. The range includes the G 500 with a new, powerful -4.0litre V8 biturbo engine. All engines are compliant with the latest Euro 6 emissions standard. A new suspension setup, together with more sensitive ESP® control results in increased driving stability, safety and road comfort. The exterior and interior have also been given an upgrade. At the same time, an exclusive AMG special edition will be available. Mercedes-Benz›s classic off-roader is beginning a new chapter of its success story which spans more than 35 years. With its continuously improved technology and high-class equipment specification, this cult all-terrain vehicle has consistently satisfied the highest expectations of off-road fans. True to this tradition, a new 4.0 litre directly injected V8 biturbo engine already unveiled in the G 500 4x4² show car is now celebrating its world premiere in the G Class. The new -8cylinder powerplant in the G 500 can point to an exclusive heritage. It is based on the new generation of Mercedes-AMG V8 engines that have already coaxed exceptional levels of performance out of the Mercedes-AMG GT and Mercedes-AMG C 63. For use in the G-Class, the V8 has been modified to deliver 310 kW (422 hp) with torque of 610 Nm. Other standout attributes include a spontaneous response and high tractive power which are made possible, for example, by two turbochargers, which instead of being configured on the outside of the cylinder banks are arranged between them in the V – the so-called «hot inside V». This layout allows a compact design, optimal response and low exhaust emissions. High efficiency is ensured by Mercedes Benz›s use of piezo direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion. Maximum strength with lowest possible weight is guaranteed by the aluminium crankcase of the V8 engine. The cylinder bore surfaces feature Daimler›s NANOSLIDE® technology, which makes them twice as hard as conventional cast-iron linings. This minimises both internal friction and fuel demand.

More power, lower fuel consumption The engines of the other G-Class models have likewise been further developed and improved in the interests of superior tractive power and optimised fuel economy. The G 500 is equipped as standard with an ECO start/stop function that reduces fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, e.g. in a traffic jam or at traffic lights. As is typical of the G-Class, the new models retain the familiar sturdy basis of body and ladder-type frame, which still offers generous reserves to cope with the increased power. Also retained is the unrivalled off-road performance with permanent all-wheel drive, low-range gearbox and three differential locks that can be engaged/disengaged while on the move. The standard suspension setup has been revised with optimised shock absorbers for improved control of body movements and even greater on-road ride comfort. An adapted ESP® setup makes for enhanced driving dynamics together with increased driving stability and road safety. Optimisations to ASR and ABS result in improved traction while shortening the stopping distance when braking. In addition, the G 500 is optionally available with a new adaptive damping system with Sport and Comfort modes. This provides a significantly more agile on-road performance in Sport mode with undiminished off-road capability while at the same time reducing the typical SUV roll on corners. Enhanced inside and out Visually, the new G 500 model is especially easy to identify by their restyled bumpers and now standard AMG flared wheel arches in the colour of the vehicle. On the inside, the G 500 features an eye-catching instrument cluster in two-tube look with 11.4 cm multifunction display and redesigned pointers and dials. New choice of colours A new Colour package is available for customers wishing to give their AMG G-Class an even more personal look. There are exclusive exterior paint finishes in solar beam, tomato red, alien green, sunset beam and galactic beam. Detachable parts such as mirrors, front and rear bumpers, wheel arch extensions, the ring around the spare wheel cover as well as the roof are painted in obsidian black. The interior topstitching is colour-matched to the paintwork. maqinaonline.com / 2016 MARCH 55

GT3 RS The 911 GT3 nameplate was introduced in 1999 as a spiritual successor to the 1973 911 RS . The RS name was first revived in 2003 as a more powerful and track-focused version of the 996-generation GT3. At first motivated by a 3.6-liter flat-six rated at 381 horsepower, the RS gained 415 ponies when the 997-gen version was launched. Updated for 2009, the 997 RS received a 3.8-liter six-cylinder with 450 horses. For 2011, Porsche launched the GT3 RS 4.0 with a 4.0-liter engine and 500 ponies, putting an end to the 997-generation RS. In 2015, four years since the last RS rolled off the assembly line, the nameplate is making a comeback for the 991-generation 911. Preceded by the 475-horsepower GT3 in 2013, the new GT3 RS broke cover at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show with updated styling and technology.

Lamborghini launched the SuperVeloce specification all the way back in the 1960s, first appearing on the Miura, the nameplate that basically introduced the world to the mid-engine supercar. Dropped when the Miura was discontinued, the SV name returned nearly 30 years later when Lambo showcased the 1995-1999 Lamborghini Diablo SV at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show. Since then, every range-topping Lambo has gotten an SV version. There was a Murcielago SV, and the Aventador SuperVeloce was presented at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

IT DELIVERS 670 CV AT 8,000 RPM AND A RESPONSE TIME TO THE ACCELERATOR OF JUST 0.8 SECONDS (AT 2,000 RPM IN THIRD GEAR), MAKING IT THE NEW BENCHMARK FOR THIS KIND OF ARCHITECTURE, THANKS IN PART TO INNOVATIVE WORK CARRIED OUT ON THE TURBINE TO REDUCE FRICTION AND INERTIA. FERRARI’S ENGINEERS DEDICATED GREAT ATTENTION AND RESOURCES TO PERFECTING THE CAR’S SOUND TOO, CREATING A NEW SOUNDTRACK THAT IS FULL, CLEAR, PROGRESSIVE AND TOTALLY DISTINCTIVE, AS EXPECTED FROM ANY PRANCING HORSE ENGINE. AERODYNAMICS MADE A PIVOTAL CONTRIBUTION TO PERFORMANCE: THE CAR’S 1.67 E INDEX FIGURE IS A NEW RECORD FOR A PRODUCTION FERRARI, AND IS THE FRUIT OF 50 PER CENT MORE DOWNFORCE THAN THE PREVIOUS MODEL ALONG WITH LOWER DRAG. THE GREATEST CHALLENGE WAS ACHIEVING THESE TWO GOALS SIMULTANEOUSLY.

CAR OF THE MONTH

SEVERAL INNOVATIVE ELEMENTS WERE SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED FOR THIS PURPOSE, NOT LEAST A DOUBLE FRONT SPOILER, BASE BLEED SIDE INTAKES AND, AT THE REAR, ACTIVE AERODYNAMICS COUPLED WITH A REVOLUTIONARY, FERRARI-PATENTED BLOWN SPOILER DESIGN. THE DESIGN OF THE SOPHISTICATED AERODYNAMIC UNDERBODY IS DERIVED FROM THE 458 GT AND INCORPORATES VORTEX GENERATORS. THANKS TO SUBSYSTEMS AND ELECTRONIC CONTROLS THAT MAKE ITS POWER AND PERFORMANCE INSTANTLY AVAILABLE AND CONTROLLABLE, THE FERRARI 488 GTB IS THE MOST RESPONSIVE PRODUCTION MODEL THERE IS, WITH BLISTERINGLY-FAST RESPONSE TIMES COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF A TRACK CAR. SPECIFIC GEAR RATIOS COMBINED WITH VARIABLE TORQUE MANAGEMENT DELIVER INCREDIBLY FAST SHIFTS AND ACCELERATION, WITH PROGRESSIVELY GREATER TORQUE VALUES IN HIGHER GEARS. THE EVOLVED VERSION OF FERRARI’S SIDE SLIP ANGLE CONTROL SYSTEM (SIDE SLIP CONTROL 2 - SSC2) IS MORE PRECISE AND LESS INVASIVE, PROVIDING GREATER LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION OUT OF CORNERS. ASIDE FROM INTEGRATING WITH THE CAR’S F1-TRAC AND E-DIFF, THE SSC2 NOW ALSO CONTROLS THE ACTIVE DAMPERS WHICH RENDERS THE CAR’S DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR DURING COMPLEX MANOEUVRES EVEN FLATTER AND MORE STABLE. THESE CUTTING-EDGE SOLUTIONS ARE REFLECTED IN THE CAR’S STYLING WHICH ACCENTUATES ITS SPORTY CHARACTER YET RETAINS THE PURE, ELEGANT LINES TYPICAL OF FERRARI TRADITION. THE COCKPIT-STYLE CABIN DESIGN IS INSPIRED BY FORMULA 1 AND FOCUSES ON FULLY IMMERSING THE DRIVER IN THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. POWERTRAIN NEW V8 TURBO: A BRILLIANT ENCAPSULATION OF FERRARI’S DNA REGARDLESS OF THE MODEL OR ITS MISSION, THE HEART OF EVERY FERRARI IS ITS ENGINE WHICH MUST, OF COURSE, DELIVER THE CLASSIC FERRARI POWER UNIT QUALITIES: BLISTERING PERFORMANCE COMBINED WITH HIGH REVS, RAZOR-SHARP RESPONSIVENESS, POWERFUL ACCELERATION AT ALL SPEEDS AND AN EXHILARATING SOUNDTRACK. THE NEW V8 SPORTED BY THE FERRARI 488 GTB IS THE MARANELLO ENGINEERS’ LATEST RESPONSE TO THE CHALLENGE TO CONSTANTLY SET NEW BENCHMARKS OF EXCELLENCE. THIS 3902 CC POWER UNIT IS THE PRANCING HORSE’S MOST HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINE EVER WITH ZERO TURBO LAG AND A UNIQUE, SEDUCTIVE SOUNDTRACK. IT DELIVERS 670 CV AT 8,000 RPM WITH A SPECIFIC POWER OUTPUT OF 172 CV/L, A NEW RECORD FOR A ROAD-GOING FERRARI, MAXIMUM TORQUE OF 760 NM IN SEVENTH GEAR AND A THROTTLE RESPONSE TIME OF JUST 0.8 SECONDS AT 2000 RPM IN THIRD GEAR. CONSEQUENTLY, THE FERRARI 488 GTB SPRINTS FROM 0-100 KM/H IN 3 SECONDS FLAT AND FROM 0-200 KM/H IN JUST 8.3. THESE SUPERB PERFORMANCE FIGURES ARE THE RESULT OF A FOCUS ON ACHIEVING MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY ACROSS THE BOARD. IN TERMS OF COMBUSTION, THIS MEANS NEW HIGH-TUMBLE INTAKE PORTS SPECIALLY SHAPED TO OPTIMISE THE FLOW COEFFICIENT AND SWIRL MOTION IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER FOR A HOMOGENEOUS CHARGE EVEN AT HIGH REVS, COMBINED WITH 200-BAR DIRECT FUEL INJECTION. THE NEW V8 ALSO HAS AN ION-SENSING SYSTEM WHICH MEASURES IONISING CURRENTS TO CONTROL IGNITION TIMING AND ADAPTIVELY PREDICT MISFIRES, AS WELL AS A MULTI-SPARK FUNCTION WHICH ENABLES THE SPARK ADVANCE TO BE MAXIMISED AT ALL REVS.

MECHANICAL EFFICIENCY IS GUARANTEED BY AN OIL PUMP THAT SUPPLIES OIL EITHER AT HIGH PRESSURE OR LOW PRESSURE, REDUCING HYDRAULIC POWER REQUIREMENTS BY UP TO 30 PER CENT COMPARED TO A CONVENTIONAL PUMP. CYLINDER HEADS WITH ROLLER FINGER FOLLOWERS REDUCE THE POWER ABSORBED BY THE VALVETRAIN BY 10 PER CENT AT LOW REVS THANKS TO THE REDUCTION OF FRICTION BETWEEN THE VALVE STEMS AND THE TAPPETS AND THE CAMSHAFTS AND THE FINGER FOLLOWER ROLLER. THE USE OF THE FLAT-PLANE CRANKSHAFT ARCHITECTURE GUARANTEES MAXIMUM COMPACTNESS, LOWER MASS AND HELPS IMPROVE THE ENGINE’S INTERNAL FLUID-DYNAMICS BY ENSURING EQUAL PULSE SPACINGS AND THUS BALANCE BETWEEN THE CYLINDERS. THE TURBOS ARE ON BALL-BEARING-MOUNTED SHAFTS TO REDUCE FRICTION AND THE COMPRESSOR WHEELS ARE IN TIAL, A LOW-DENSITY TITANIUM-ALUMINIUM ALLOY, WHICH, THANKS TO ITS LOWER INERTIA, ENSURES MAXIMUM SPOOL-UP SPEED. IN ADDITION, TWIN-SCROLL TECHNOLOGY DIRECTS THE EXHAUST GASES FROM EACH CYLINDER THROUGH SEPARATE SCROLLS AND INCREASES THE EFFICIENCY OF THE EXHAUST PULSES FOR MAXIMUM POWER. A SPECIAL SEAL ON THE TURBINE HOUSING ENSURES A MINIMUM GAP BETWEEN IT AND THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY. ALL THESE SOLUTIONS CONTRIBUTE TO THE CLASS-LEADING RESPONSE TIME WITH ZERO TURBO LAG. AS THE REVS RISE, THE V8’S SOUNDTRACK INCREASES IN VOLUME AND CLARITY, IN LINE WITH THE INCREASE IN POWER. PIVOTAL TO THE SOUND IN THE CABIN ARE THE EXHAUST HEADERS WITH LONGER, EQUAL-LENGTH TUBING AND THE FLAT-PLANE CRANKSHAFT. DIFFERENT ENGINE SPEEDS, ANOTHER AREA IN WHICH FERRARI HAS ALWAYS EXCELLED. AERODYNAMICS RECORD-BREAKING EFFICIENCY FOR EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE AERODYNAMIC SOLUTIONS DERIVED FROM MARANELLO’S EXPERIENCE ON THE TRACK AUGMENT DOWNFORCE WITHOUT INCREASING DRAG, RESULTING IN AN EFFICIENCY FIGURE OF 1.67, A RECORD FOR A ROAD-HOMOLOGATED FERRARI. DOWNFORCE IS 50 PER CENT HIGHER THAN ON THE PREVIOUS MODEL DESPITE DRAG BEING REDUCED. THE FRONT OF THE CAR IS DOMINATED BY THE CENTRAL AERO PILLAR AND AN F1-INSPIRED DOUBLE SPOILER. THE LATTER CONSISTS OF TWO SECTIONS: THE TOP ELEMENT IS DESIGNED TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DUCT TO MANAGE THE FLOW OF AIR GOING INTO THE RADIATOR, THEREBY IMPROVING ITS EFFICIENCY. THE LARGER, LOWER SECTION GENERATES SUCTION WHICH PULLS THE AIR FLOW TOWARDS THE LOWER PART OF THE UNDERBODY, GENERATING DOWNFORCE. THE AERO PILLAR HAS THE JOB OF MANAGING THE POWERFUL AIR FLOWS STRIKING THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND DISTRIBUTING THEM ALONG BOTH THE LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE PLANE. ON THE LONGITUDINAL PLANE ON THE LOWER SECTION, IT ACCELERATES AND DIRECTS AN EXTREMELY FAST FLOW TO THE CENTRAL UNDERBODY, WHILE ON THE TRANSVERSE PLAN ON THE UPPER SECTION, IT DEFLECTS THE FLOW TOWARDS THE RADIATOR MOUTH, CONTROLLING ITS EXPANSION TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE RADIATING MASSES. THE FERRARI 488 GTB HAS AN INNOVATIVE AERODYNAMIC UNDERBODY THAT INCORPORATES VORTEX GENERATORS, SPECIAL CURVED AERODYNAMIC APPENDAGES WHICH ACCELERATE THE AIR THEREBY REDUCING PRESSURE. THE RESULT IS THAT THE CAR’S

CAR OF THE MONTH

UNDERBODY IS “SUCKED” DOWN TO THE GROUND AND DOWNFORCE IS HIGHER BUT DRAG IS NOT. THE FRONT SECTION OF THE UNDERBODY IS FLAT, GENERATING DOWNFORCE, WHICH PUSHES THE CAR LOWER TO THE GROUND WHILST HAVING THE SMALLEST POSSIBLE IMPACT ON THE FLOW ARRIVING AT THE FRONT STRAKES, CONTRIBUTING TO OVERALL DOWNFORCE GENERATION OF 325 KG AT 250 KM/H. THE LARGE REAR DIFFUSER HAS CURVED FENCES WHICH OPTIMISE THE EXPANSION OF THE HUGE AMOUNT OF AIR CHANNELLED UNDER THE CAR, BOOSTING DOWNFORCE. THEY ALSO PROTECT THE DIFFUSER’S INTERNAL CHANNELS FROM THE TURBULENCE GENERATED BY THE REAR WHEELS, THEREBY REDUCING DRAG. THE REAR DIFFUSER FEATURES VARIABLE FLAP GEOMETRY CONTROLLED BY A CPU, INTEGRATED WITH OTHER VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEMS, WHICH MODIFIES THE EXPANSION OF THE DIFFUSER. DEPENDING ON THE DRIVING CONDITIONS, THIS ADJUSTS THE BALANCE BETWEEN INCREASED DOWNFORCE (WITH FLAPS CLOSED: IN CORNERS AND UNDER BRAKING) AND DRAG REDUCTION (WITH FLAPS OPEN: ON STRAIGHTS AND UNDER ACCELERATION). THE BLOWN SPOILER IS A NEW SOLUTION. AIR ENTERS AN INTAKE AT THE BASE OF THE REAR SCREEN AND EXITS VIA THE BUMPER. THIS GEOMETRY ENABLES THE SURFACE TAKING THE AERODYNAMIC LOAD TO HAVE A MORE PRONOUNCED CURVATURE WHICH, IN TURN, INCREASES THE UPWARD DEFLECTION OF THE FLOW ON THE REAR SCREEN, THUS BOOSTING DOWNFORCE. THIS SOLUTION AVOIDS HAVING TO EXTEND THE HEIGHT OF THE REAR SPOILER AND THUS HELPS KEEP DRAG LOW. THE BASE BLEED AIR INTAKES ON THE CAR’S SIDES ARE

DIVIDED BY A CENTRAL FLAP. THE FLOW OVER THE UPPER PART OF THE FLAP, WHICH IS ALSO USED FOR THE ENGINE AIR INTAKE, IS DEFLECTED AND EXITS FROM THE TAIL AREA TO REDUCE THE DRAG CAUSED BY THE LOW-PRESSURE WAKE DIRECTLY BEHIND THE CAR. THE EFFECT IS CREATED BY THE AIRFLOW EXITING UNDER PRESSURE AT THE REAR WHICH ENERGISES THE WAKE THAT FORMS AT THE END OF THE CAR’S TAIL, MOVING IT FURTHER FROM THE TAIL WHERE IT THUS INTERFERES LESS WITH THE CAR’S AERODYNAMICS. THE FLOW FROM THE LOWER PART OF THE FLAP GOES TO THE INTERCOOLERS TO COOL THE INTAKE CHARGE. C AR O F THE MONTH CONDITIONS, FERRARI DREW ON THE VEHICLE DYNAMICS EXPERIENCE IT HAS BUILT UP IN COMPETITION AND THROUGH ITS LABORATORY CARS ON THE VARIOUS CIRCUITS WORLDWIDE. SUBSYSTEM AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL DEVELOPMENT FOCUSED PRINCIPALLY ON MAXIMUM VERSATILITY, RESPONSIVENESS TO THE ACCELERATOR AND TOTAL CONTROL WITH RESPONSE TIMES (0.06 SECONDS) COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF A TRACK CAR. THE GEARBOX FEATURES SPECIFIC RATIOS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE ENGINE’S INCREDIBLE TORQUE. VARIABLE TORQUE MANAGEMENT DELIVERS INCREASING AMOUNTS OF TORQUE UP THROUGH THE GEARBOX TO OPTIMISE ACCELERATION AND GIVE THE DRIVER A FEELING OF NEVER-ENDING POWER. AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THESE SOLUTIONS, THE 488 DELIVERS TRACK-STYLE GEAR-SHIFTING: IT TAKES JUST 6 SECONDS TO GO FROM STANDSTILL IN FIRST TO THE LIMITER IN FOURTH GEAR. THE EVOLVED VERSION OF FERRARI’S SIDE SLIP CONTROL SYSTEM, SSC2, IS MORE PRECISE YET LESS INVASIVE, ANALYSING VARIOUS PARAMETERS TO BOOST LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION OUT OF CORNERS BY 12 PER CENT (IN THE RACE AND CT OFF MANETTINO POSITIONS). ASIDE FROM JUST INTEGRATING WITH THE CAR’S F1-TRAC AND E-DIFF, THE SSC2 NOW ALSO CONTROLS THE ACTIVE DAMPERS, RENDERING THE CAR’S DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR DURING COMPLEX MANOEUVRES EVEN FLATTER AND MORE STABLE. THE FERRARI 488 GTB’S EXCELLENT DYNAMICS ARE DUE IN PART ALSO TO THE SCM 3 MAGNETORHEOLOGICAL DAMPING SYSTEM WHICH HAS A FASTER ECU TO MODIFY THE MAGNETIC FIELD IN THE DAMPERS, AS WELL AS NEW FERRARI-PATENTED SOFTWARE THAT ALSO AVAILS OF THREE NEW SENSORS ON THE CAR BODY. THE DAMPERS HAVE NEW PISTON RODS TO REDUCE FRICTION FOR MORE EFFICIENT CONTROL WHICH TRANSLATES INTO A FEELING OF GREATER BODY CONTROL WITH BETTER BUMP ABSORPTION. THE LATEST EVOLUTION OF THE ESP GUARANTEES EVEN MORE EFFICIENT ABS INTERVENTION IN LOW-GRIP SITUATIONS. THIS WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE FASTER CALCULATION AND RESPONSE SPEEDS (-8 PER CENT) DELIVERED BY NEW HARDWARE AND REWRITTEN SOFTWARE. THANKS TO THE NEW BREMBO EXTREME DESIGN BRAKING SYSTEM, THE FERRARI 488 GTB’S STOPPING DISTANCES ARE 9 PER CENT SHORTER THAN THE PREVIOUS MODEL. DERIVED FROM THE LAFERRARI, THE BRAKES ALSO HAVE NEW CALLIPERS THAT ALLOW OPTIMAL COOLING UNDER EXTREME DRIVING. THEY ALSO FEATURE NEW MATERIALS THAT ENSURE THEY REACH OPTIMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE FASTER AND ARE MORE DURABLE. STYLE EXTERIOR THE FERRARI 488 GTB’S EXCEPTIONAL SPORTINESS AND PERFORMANCE ARE UNDERSCORED BY PARTICULARLY AGGRESSIVE STYLING. THE DESIGN IS AERODYNAMICALLY HIGHLY EFFICIENT YET RETAINS THE CLASSICALLY CLEAN, PURE LINES TYPICAL OF FERRARI’S LEGENDARY STYLING. DESIGNED BY THE FERRARI STYLING CENTRE, THE FERRARI 488 GTB FEATURES VERY SCULPTURAL FLANKS WHICH ARE THE KEY TO ITS CHARACTER. ITS LARGE SIGNATURE AIR INTAKE SCALLOP IS A NOD TO THE ORIGINAL 308 GTB AND IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SECTIONS BY A SPLITTER. THE FRONT IS CHARACTERISED BY THE DUAL GRILLE OPENING WHICH CHANNELS AIR INTO THE TWO RADIATORS. THERE IS 78 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

ALSO A DOUBLE FRONT SPOILER FOR AERODYNAMIC REASONS WHICH, ON CLOSE INSPECTION, LOOKS VERY LIKE THOSE OF THE F1 SINGLE-SEATERS. AT THE CENTRE TWO PYLONS ARE COMBINED WITH A DEFLECTOR WHICH CHANNELS AIR TOWARDS THE FLAT UNDERBODY. THE BONNET HAS PRONOUNCED, RAISED CENTRAL SECTION AND TWO SIDE CHANNELS. THESE CHANNELS HAVE THE DUAL FUNCTION OF MAKING THE CAR LOOK MORE SPORTY AND CHANNELLING THE AIR FROM THE TWO VENTS IN THE BUMPER WHICH HAVE BEEN SKILFULLY HIDDEN FROM SIGHT IN THE FRONT VIEW TO KEEP THE LINES CLEAN. THE TAIL IS DOMINATED BY THE BLOWN SPOILER AND THE LARGE AIR VENTS WHICH HELP IMPROVE THE CAR’S AERODYNAMICS. THE NEW EXHAUST TAILPIPES HAVE BEEN REPOSITIONED TO ACCOMMODATE THE GREATER HEIGHT REQUIRED FOR THE DIFFUSER WHICH HAS AN AGGRESSIVE RAMP ANGLE. THE OVERALL RESULT EXUDES A SENSE OF POWER AND PERFORMANCE. A NEW COLOUR, ROSSO CORSA METALLIZZATO, WAS DEVELOPED TO UNDERSCORE THIS MODEL’S SUPREMELY SPORTY CHARACTER AS WELL AS ITS UNIQUE ELEGANCE AND EXCLUSIVITY. SEEN AT CLOSE QUARTERS, IT HAS A SURPRISING DEPTH AND GLOSSINESS ACHIEVED BY USING A TRIPLE-LAYER FORMULATION IN WHICH MILLIONS OF MICRO-PARTICLES ARE SUSPENDED IN THE PAINT. CABIN THE FERRARI 488 GTB’S CABIN WAS DESIGNED TO EXUDE EXTREME SPORTINESS WITHOUT SACRIFICING OCCUPANT COMFORT. THIS HEIGHTENS THE IMPRESSION OF A COCKPIT TAILORED AROUND THE DRIVER’S NEEDS: THE COMMANDS NOT CLUSTERED ON THE STEERING WHEEL ARE ON THE WRAPAROUND SATELLITE PODS WHICH ARE ANGLED DIRECTLY TOWARDS THE DRIVER. THE NEW LIGHTER, HORIZONTALLY MORE COMPACT DASHBOARD FEATURES ULTRA-SPORTY AIR VENTS INSPIRED BY MILITARY JET AIR INTAKES. THE OVERALL RESULT IS AN EFFORTLESS MARRIAGE OF INNOVATIVE VOLUMES AND COMPACT, FUNCTIONAL FORMS. THE DESIGN REFERENCES TYPICAL FERRARI TRAITS, SUCH AS THE CLEAR SEPARATION BETWEEN DASHBOARD AND TUNNEL, THE MULTIFUNCTIONAL STEERING WHEEL, THE CONTROL BRIDGE ON THE TUNNEL. ALL BEAUTIFULLY HANDCRAFTED WITH MATERIALS AND TRIM THAT ARE BOTH ELEGANT AND SPORTY, WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS ON CREATING FUNCTIONAL SPACES. THE CENTRAL TUNNEL IS SLEEK, DYNAMIC AND FUNCTIONAL AT ONCE. THE CHARACTERISTIC LONGITUDINAL F1 BRIDGE HAS BECOME A PRANCING HORSE ICON AND, IN PRACTICAL TERMS, FREES UP PLENTY OF STORAGE SPACE FOR SMALL ITEMS WHILE THE MAIN FUNCTION BUTTONS ARE NOW IN A MORE ERGONOMIC POSITION. METICULOUS ATTENTION WAS LAVISHED ON THE VARIOUS ODDS AND ENDS COMPARTMENTS WHICH PROVIDE GENEROUS STORAGE SPACE. THE FERRARI 488 GTB’S NEW DOOR PANELS ARE THE FRUIT OF METICULOUS WORK THAT CENTRED AROUND QUALITY AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL. THEY ARE NOW MORE COMFORTABLE TO THE TOUCH AND THE ARMREST IS MORE ERGONOMIC. THE DESIGN IS VERY CLEAN AND SPORTY WHILE THE BUTTONS ARE VERY EASY TO REACH. GREAT THOUGHT ALSO WENT INTO THE NEW SEATS WHICH HAVE FIXED HEADRESTS. THEY ARE EVEN LIGHTER AND OFFER EXTREMELY HIGH CONTAINMENT WHILE BEING VERY COMFORTABLE, THANKS TO NEW PROFILES AND PADDING DESIGNED FOR LONG JOURNEYS.

like the Audi R8 itself, a decade goes by in the blink of an eye, especially when you’re busy trundling across the globe testing some of the greatest automotive offerings of our age. Inevitably, some new or refreshed cars are not so great, but ten years ago when I drove the first R8 in Las Vegas it blew me away, and now that I’ve had a crack at the latest iterations of the most superlative Audi, all that has changed is that my appreciation or the car is perhaps that much richer for having watched the model grow up. Not that the setting was all that grown up – we put the R8 through the paces amid the carnivalesque atmosphere of Faro Portugal. Matt the accelerator in the 602bhp V10 Plus iteration of the car, and you’ll feel the years melt from your face. No wait, that’s just the pure accelerative force of the car pulling at your slackening skin, loosened by years of

living. Ever wonder how Clarkson earned his jowls? It’s the effect of too many super cars, I’m sure of it. Anyone familiar with the previous iteration of the R8 you’ll notice the improved transmission right away— a lightning fast dual-clutch DSG tranny has replaced the distinctly unlovable R-tronic robotised manual gearbox, and that’s reason to celebrate. Someday, somewhere, an R-tronic apologist will cry crocodile tears into his or her tea over this soon to be vanquished bit of technology, but for now we can skip the instant nostalgia and simply agree that two clutches are always better than one. There’s a reason that the mighty ZF 8HP is a staple in so many excellent cars. Not here though, this 7-speed box is an Ingolstadt original, and it’s quite good. Or, for the OGs among us, the 6-speed manual represents another appealing option.

ROAD TRIP

N

ormal mode helps the R8 remember its manners around town, but flick on Sport mode and the throttle becomes a merciless hair trigger

Take a walk around the car and you’ll notice— this made-over beauty differs subtly from the old model. The finish is matte in a few more places, while the signature headlight squint is LED bedazzled, as are the taillights, so that there’s something a tad more au currant in its Clint Eastwood impression. (Note to Hollywood: we’re going to need some fresh tough guys sooner than later). The grille is reworked as well, and the car now features rounded exhaust tips. Contrasting all those matte sections, Audi has increased the colour palette, offering more tonal combinations than ever— at least I think that’s what this means: “Audi offers the R8 in the two solid colours Ibis White and Brilliant Red, in four metallic shades and with five pearl effect / crystal effect coatings. For the R8 V10 plus a matt effect colour is available as an exclusive feature. The side blades on the Coupé come in eight colours.” The V10 Plus is further differentiated with ultra-light CFRP body panels to help offset the hefty power plant. There are more colours, but fewer entries in the R8 line-up, which now includes two versions of the coupe´ that look quite similar— the V8 or V10. The range-topping R8 V10 Plus is the quickest Audi ever built, keeping up with the Italians while gripping the road with the added peace of mind afforded by Audi’s four-wheel drive quattro chassis.

86 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

What that means is that, while the R8 V10 Plus does the 0-100kph dash in 3.1 seconds, thundering up to its 318kph top speed, you feel like all that power is working for you, and never against. This is a supercar that will suffer fools as well as fiends, and that’s clearly a compliment. At a commute-from-Sharjah crawl, the R8 retains the easy feel of a good daily driver, steering and braking without any of the compromises that plague many super cars at super low speeds. The ride is, necessarily, on the harder side – but the trade off in handling is so rewarding that I almost took a perverse pleasure in the bumps. The S-tronic upshifts smoothly here too, so you don’t have to jerk your way through those brief moments when traffic flows. Normal mode helps the R8 remember its manners around town, but flick on Sport mode and the throttle becomes a merciless hair trigger, releasing the R8s considerable thrust as the transmission reaches low for torque, dipping down as many as four gears (not all dual-clutch jobs can manage this feet) in a blip to find its happy place. If you’re in a traffic and pedestrian free zone, you can give launch control a shot— the S tronic hovers at 4500 rpm before dropping into first and shooting down the road. According to the R8 owner’s manual, this feature could attract a few onlookers, which in Dubai, is half the point.

ROA D T R I P The R8 is incredibly nimble to match its speedy capability. Push into a turn and it holds on like George Clooney’s wife during their courtship, hanging in well past what seems plausible. Unless you’re a certified track captain, this is the kind of car that will help you find your limits, and not the other way around. Inside, not that much has changed – splinters of chrome are now more abundant, there’s more leather on the dash, but the overall layout is classic R8. Sit back in the premium cross-stitched leather seats and you’re in the power position, figuratively and literally. You have the standard nav at your fingertips, along with Audi’s MMI infotainment system. In higher trim levels you get to alternate between listening to the bangin’ B&O system comprised of 12 loudspeakers, 10 amplifier channels combining for 465 watts of euphonic sound, or the techno-howl of the R8’s exhaust note. Another highlight for me was a midnight run around a closed course in this amazing car – the neon sky echoing off the cars reflective surface seemed to dance as I circuited the tarmac. It felt like I was channelling the spirit of Le Mans, albeit in a car you can drive everyday, possibly for twenty four hours if need be. Also unlike the actual Le Mans cars, this one isn’t a tweaky maintenance hog. That means ownership of the R8 should be relatively hassle free compared to the more rarefied stuff, but then, owners of the more rarefied stuff have been known to ship their supercars all over the

globe anyway. In any event, this is a car that we can all love, even if we can’t all afford to own one – if you’re a journalist for instance. AUDI OFFERS THE R8 IN THE TWO SOLID COLOURS IBIS WHITE AND BRILLIANT RED, IN FOUR METALLIC SHADES AND WITH FIVE PEARL EFFECT / CRYSTAL EFFECT COATINGS. FOR THE R8 V10 PLUS A MATT EFFECT COLOUR IS AVAILABLE AS AN EXCLUSIVE FEATURE. THE SIDE BLADES ON THE COUPÉ COME IN EIGHT COLOURS. NORMAL MODE HELPS THE R8 REMEMBER ITS MANNERS AROUND TOWN, BUT FLICK ON SPORT MODE AND THE THROTTLE BECOMES A MERCILESS HAIR TRIGGER, RELEASING THE R8S CONSIDERABLE THRUST AS THE TRANSMISSION REACHES LOW FOR TORQUE, DIPPING DOWN AS MANY AS FOUR GEARS IN A BLIP TO FIND ITS HAPPY PLACE

A

s an icon of 1960’s grooviness, it’s only appropriate that the VW Beetle have the option of taking its top off from time to time, if only for nostalgia’s sake. So it’s with that in mind that we journeyed to New York with express intent of driving the new Cab up to Boston— a beacon of American freedom itself, if you’re a fan of dressing up like indigenous peoples and dumping perfectly good tea into the bay.Beantown, as Boston wears a crooked grin on its leathery mug— it’s a place where you’re equally likely to be asked for your opinion on American presidential candidates and whether or not you happen to be “re-todded.” I don’t know who Todd is, but New Englanders really don’t want you to turn into him… for a second time. The plan, as per Vee Dub, was to wind our way out of Manhattan, cruising (traffic permitting) up the Easter Seaboard through Connecticut (where Dave Letterman does much of his brooding)

through to Provincetown, Massachusetts— a bedroom and breakfast community that preys on the average tourists predilection for crumbly scones, rocking chairs, and lace doilies. From their, we’d descend on Boston like a herd of, er, dung Beetles. OK, maybe not those ones, but some kind of Beetle that travels in a herd. The trip was not without excitement— one wrong turn on the Bronx saw me purchasing a luxury watch at a steep discount from a very nice gentleman who gave us directions outside the entrance to the 103rd Street subway station. It wasn’t until we were more than 100km outside NYC that I noticed it actually said “Rolux” in tiny script. Anyway— remember when the “new” Beetle was big news? Rebooting an icon is tricky work, and VW deserves praise for the job it’s done. This latest version departs form the cartoonish quality of the comeback bug, erring on the side of control, where the previous car preferred pizzazz. Based on the Golf

ROAD TRIP platform, this un-Golf has the makings of a direct competitor in the small, premium lifestyle car segment, a place where Mini thrives. VW has taken measures to do so, in no small part by redesigning the car to appeal to a broader segment of the population. As such the car drops the extra-curvy flower power vibe, rendering the car lower and wider. The roofline is longer, and lower as well, much more like the 1949 car from which it takes its name. Oh, and in this new model, the roofline can pull a pleasing disappearing act. Global warming was on our side in America, and we took great advantage of the one-touch soft top operation— at speeds as high as 50kph, the Cab can be rendered open air. Better yet, it only takes 9.5 seconds from start to finish— the car is basically a Transformer. Clamber into the cockpit (top up or down) and you’ll see that the Beetle evinces a no-nonsense aesthetic that will appeal to drivers who, er, don’t find the Mini’s particular brand of cute very appealing. Where the old new Beetle was all whimsy and camp, the new new Beetle is more George than Ringo— a bit serious, with less decoration. Here VW’s line of Fender branded stereo systems comes in glorious woodgrain that, while it might have easily slipped into the goofy retro territory occupied by the outgoing model, is actually pretty cool. The front seats are good, and will do fine on a long drive, while the back is pretty tight, although certainly fine for young and/or short people. Still, it’s not one of those VW’s where you wonder how much market head-room they’ve left for Audi, as the plastics could be nicer and the fabric storage pouch in the doors is a bit sad. But then, something like a top trim CC or Touareg is quite a different proposition compared to the egalitarian Beetle. If anything, the current model Beetle (differentiated by the appellation A5) seems to marry the mass appeal of the once ubiquitous “Herbie” with a surprising bit of toughening up. Still, you have the iconic round headlights, flared wings, curving bonnet shape, sides, doorsills and large wheels, but the new new Beetle adds width, height and length to stake its claim in the ‘teens’ (this part of the decade, not actual teenagers, who should be made to take the bus). The new car more closely resembles the original than it’s predecessor and, along with the addition of a spoiler to every iteration, culminates in a vehicle that is much more of a people pleaser than a fashion statement for gals on the go— in other words this “folks wagon” is more obviously positioned to appeal to both genders. This iconic ride that alternately symbolized, er, a notso-nice German Chancellor and, subsequently, a lot of free lovin’ hippies, seems to court all comers with more staid solid, metallic, and pearl shades. Alternately, you can fly your freak flag that much higher in Denim Blue, Saturn Yellow or Tornado Red. 90 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

ROAD TRIP But VW isn’t just resting on flower power laurels, they expect this Beetle to make a statement about performance as well: “Since its world debut, the third generation Beetle has been eagerly anticipated in the Middle East...” said Thomas Milz, Managing Director, Volkswagen Middle East. “The new model is a step-change from its predecessor with a powerful new engine; the Beetle enjoys 210HP from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and a top speed of 227 kph. Its arrival in the region heralds a new era in the future of one the world’s most iconic cars,” concluded Milz. The car is available in three trim levels, and seems to represent VW’s “something for everyone” approach to car manufacturing. The base S model is no slouch, with touches like a multifunction leather wrapped steering wheel; eight speaker Fender sounds system, dual zone climate control, and parking distance control that provides acoustic warning signals at the front and rear of the vehicle. The mid level SE differentiates itself with 18-inch alloy “Twister” wheels; a transparent tilt/slide sunroof, which is 80 per cent larger (glass surface area) than its predecessor and insulates 99 per cent of UV radiation and 92 per cent of heat energy; as well as bi-xenon headlights with 15 LEDs for your modern motoring pleasure.

ROAD TRIP Toping the range, the Beetle SEL, builds upon an already attractive package with 19-inch alloy “Tornado” wheels; keyless locking and starting system, an improved infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, DVD player, voice control, SD card slot, 30 Gigabyte hard drive and a mobile device interface. There’s also a smattering of “Vienna” leather added to the seat centres and inner sides of the bolsters to class the joint up. The way this Beetle handles also adds a touch of class, which is superior in every way over the outgoing car. The Beetle boasts a multilink rear suspension with improved balance that particularly shines on twisting roads. The outgoing torision beam setup was fine, to be sure, but this is better. The suspension is tuned a hair softer than what you’d find in, for instance, the GTI or Golf R, but that simply reflects a better understanding of this car’s place in the VW line up. In any event, you can get going fast through the curves in this ride, and rest assured that the 12.3-inch front discs have plenty of grab when you need it. For our market, VW is cutting straight to the chase, eliminating options like the 1.2-litre TSI and the 2.0-litre TDI diesel that wouldn’t be likely to sell that well here. Which is nice, because the 2.0-litre unit borrowed from the GTI makes for the most entertaining iteration of this Beetle. Paired to VW’s DSG gearbox, the car feels appropriately powerful and ready for whatever your local roads can dish out. It corners well, and absorbs even the most severely beaten tarmac with very little complaint. Whether you’re in Boston, New York, or Abu Dhabi— the world loves a Beetle to be sure, but the new model has already been on the international market for some time, so it does feel like people have seen it on TV and online a lot already. Oh well, regardless of whether you’ll turn heads or not, some classic car models, like the VW Beetle, are too good to let go of, kudos to VW for re-stoking the fires.

CROSSING

PATHS DO HYBRIDS HAVE TO BE BORING? LEXUS THINKS NOT WITH ITS GS450H MODEL 96 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

ROA D T R I P

maqinaonline.com / 2016 MARCH 97

T

HE THING ABOUT hybrid cars is that, outside of some of the most super-hyper hyper-super cars ever created, they’re generally pretty bland to drive. That can be fine, as long as you’re not often involved in high-speed car chases. Because, whether you grew up fascinated by cheesy 80s TV car stunts or not, the chances are pretty good you’re mostly just going to work and back with occasional forays to the mall. Any car can do that, but these days we’re asked to choose between efficiency (for the sake of the planet) and performance. Well actually, there might just be a middle way, thanks to the latest Lexus GS450h. Lexus is a serious force in motoring 98 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

to be sure, and it’s just a matter of whether or not you’ve been paying attention to the many feather’s in its cap – whips like the carbon fibre-reinforced polymer clad, V10 powered, 563 horsepower. The various F Sport variants in are just as enticing, and the GS450h only piles onto the carmakers enviable offerings, driven by the noble and beautifully simple goal that makes it fun to drive. Powered by a 3.5L V6 paired to an electric motor, this series produces 338hp to muster loads of ready accelerative bliss. The bright boffins at Lexus offer three driving modes here: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Naturally, Eco mode provides a certain intellectual satisfaction but none of the visceral excitement for which one buys a car like this. Electrically assisted steering calibration, throttle response and stability control all find their apex in Sport mode, which takes the car into more rarefied territory. In this setting, one can paddle the car into a grin inducing heat with a few deft flicks of wrists and right foot. When you mat

the accelerator the aural experience of the car is artificially amplified, as an intake resonator pumps induction sound into the cabin. Behind the wheel, the car feels planted and composed with sharp steering and plenty of stopping power at your disposal. The infotainment system is probably the best that Toyota/Lexus has produced so far and the new dash and console layout is a huge improvement over previous models. The seven-inch display screen is brighter and crisper as well. The ‘Lexus Remote Touch’ pad, which controls the system, takes a bit of adjustment, but after a few hours you can grow to feel quite at home with it. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the material quality is probably the best seen coming out of Japan. Remember that longer wheelbase? It affords more head and legroom, as well as extra storage space in the rear. The GS is exceedingly smooth, and you can thank its Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) for its excellent ride quality. According to Lexus, the car has the ability to dial in comfort and stability, while mitigating body roll – making the process more refined. AVS limbers up at low speed, and stiffens when you go fast. It keeps the nose from diving when you brake hard, and conversely, keeps the cross over from squatting back

when you accelerate. It also works in concert with stability control to offer the best possible handling when you break traction, and adds extra damping force under heavy braking in order to assist the driver in avoiding accidents. In a word, it helps keep you safe and happy out on the road, reacting to driver input and only nannying when the situation starts to look dire. The GS450h is probably the best Lexus GS saloon available, and this new model is both enjoyable and in possession of real driving chops. It doesn’t sacrifice anything in terms of performance. It has excellent fuel efficiency, and is comfortable, quiet and technology packed. Yes, that partly comes in the form of its looks, which can be a tad staid. But then, once a car reaches a certain level of price and performance it’s not for the rabble anyway. Lexus has a nice combination of style, features, and performance in the GS450h – you’ll like where the marque is headed, and we’d be happy to ride that way in this car. The downside, is price – if you’re not worried about sipping petrol, there are similarly equipped V8s to be had in this price bracket. Whether that interests you or not, is a matter of taste and personal priorities. The good news is that this car offers a very satisfying drive experience, and that’s always news in the hybrid category.

In Florida, the colours are a bit brighter, the air a tad more fetid, and the locals are legendary in their exploits. Like the Joshua James, of Jupiter, Fla. who, according to a a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report, chucked a 3½-foot alligator into the drive through window of a Wendy’s. Apparently he didn’t like his burger. While using an alligator as a deadly weapon is an exotic choice of appliance, Florida is a place where people like to stand out, ergo the perfect spot to launch the Lamborghini Huracán Spyder, a 602 bhp capable of over 320kph. Let’s hope nobody puts one through the window of a Wendy’s. The Huracán handles the transition to topless with surprising grace— at speeds up to 50kph. Not bad, eh? The system comports itself so well thanks to a cantered windscreen that channels wind to intake ducts placed

102 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

just far enough from your head (and that of your passenger) to keep even the dodgiest toupé attached (in case you’re reading, Donald Trump). This allows you to enjoy the open air without feeling like you’re trapped one of the Huracán’s namesakes, which by the way, also frequent this part of the Southern US. All said, the car’s 3 layer roof design is both impressive looking, and works a treat. And yet, there’s real canvas up there, so no one will mistake you’re Spyder for a hardtop, while allowing Lambo to differentiate itself from competitors like the Ferrari 488 Spider and the McLaren 650S. But let’s assume for the moment that you have the top down— all the better to hear this beast’s incredible exhaust note. Sure, space is a vacuum and all that, but it you want your supercar to sound like Han and Luke just blew up the Death Star every time to open the throttle, this is a good place to start.

maqinaonline.com / 2016 MARCH 103

104 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

One niggle though, is that the Dynamic Steering feature is a tad awkward— the system, designed to make Lambs easier to steer at low speed is very much a work in progress, robbing the driver of feedback. And yet sales data suggests no one cars, as pretty much all Huracáns sold have been specced with the system… we say pass if you can as the car has the potential to be even better without it. Another thing we expect to see one day in the Huracán is an independent damper setting— allowing you to, say, soften things up on city streets, while retaining the throttle response, and shift points you love in Corsa mode. There’s a million reasons to celebrate this car though, and its naturally aspirated V10 powerplant accounts for several. With a 100-0kph time off 3.4sec, the car is properly fast and never whines. To handle all that enthusiasm, the Spyder is built around a carbonaluminium that is so durable that the only parts of that car that needs extra reinforcement over the hard top are the windscreen pillars. The car does wind up 120kg heavier than its cousin overall, thanks to the sundry parts that make putting its top down such a breeze— things like motorised buttresses, droppable rear windows and pop-up rollover due have to weigh something, afterall. Driving around Miami in the Lamborghini Huracán Spyder, practically every passerby would turn to gawk at this gorgeous car. Which is no mean feat when you see what people wear (or don’t) around here. This is a good place to live if you demand attention, and this Lambo might just be your car. READ EXTRA NEWS AND COMMENT ON YOUR WEBSITE www.maqinaonline.com

cLaren Automotive has revealed the latest chapter in the history of the iconic ‘Longtail’ name with confirmation of the 675LT Spider. Strictly limited to only 500 examples worldwide, it is only the second model to wear the LT badge. This latest model comes less than a year since the first model in nearly 20 years resurrected the name, and is in response to significant customer demand. The 675LT Coupé focused on light weight, enhanced aerodynamics, increased power and track-focused dynamics, and this limited-run model quickly sold out before the first deliveries commenced. Sharing these key characteristics, McLaren Automotive now presents the most focused, fastest and exhilarating open top

model to ever wear a McLaren badge. The 675LT Spider, priced at £285,450, is the fifth new model debuted by McLaren Automotive in 2015 in what has become a defining year for the British brand. This latest model joins the McLaren P1™ GTR, 570S Coupé and 540C Coupé, and the fixed-head 675LT Coupé as new to the line-up, and further strengthens the Super Series range. Under the skin of the 675LT Spider sits the heavily revised 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 powertrain from the coupé sibling, ensuring performance figures are worthy of the LT – or ‘Longtail’ – badge. The power output and torque figures remain unchanged, with 675PS (666bhp) delivered at 7,100rpm and 700Nm (516lb ft) available between 5,000-6,500rpm. The changes to the powertrain saw more than 50 percent

of the components replaced to ensure optimized levels of power, torque and drivability. These include new, more efficient turbos, detail design changes to the cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds, new camshaft and lightweight connecting rods, and a faster-flowing fuel pump and delivery system. Acceleration from 0-100kmh (0-62mph) takes just 2.9 seconds, and 200kmh (124mph) is achieved in 8.1 seconds – giving away only 0.2 seconds to the more aerodynamically optimized and lighter coupé. Controlled torque delivery in first gear manages torque to 600Nm (443lb ft) to ensure maximum acceleration, and minimizing wheel slip. Top speed is 326km/h (203mph). Despite these blistering performance figures, the 675LT Spider

R A DA R returns 24.2mpg on the EU combined cycle, while CO2 emissions remain at 275g/km – the same as the coupé. A three-piece retractable folding hardtop can be opened at speeds up to 30km/h (19mph) to allow for a new level of open-air exhilaration. Staying true to the ‘Longtail’ ethos, established by the McLaren F1 in the late 1990s, the 675LT Spider has been developed with a focus on light weight and optimized aerodynamic performance. The special nature of the model is supported by the extensive use of carbon fibre for the bodywork. As with the 675LT Coupé, the front bumper with larger splitter and end plates, front under body, side skirts, side intakes, lower side intakes, rear bodyside lower, rear fenders, rear deck, rear bumper, diffuser and ‘Longtail’ Airbrake are all carbon fibre. Lightweight components are also found throughout the

powertrain and chassis, all contributing to a dry weight of just 1,270kg. This weight is a full 100kg lighter than the already lightweight 650S Spider, and gives a power-to-weight figure of 532PS per tonne. Due to the inherent strength of the carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, no further strengthening – and associated weight increase – has been added through the removal of the roof, and the 675LT Spider is only 40kg heavier than the Coupé, all due to the retractable roof system. The dramatic styling and purposeful stance of the 675LT is retained with the Spider variant, with the extended front splitter flanked by front wing end plates, each working the airflow harder and increasing downforce. Sculpted carbon fibre door sills run along the lower edge of the bodywork, flowing in to a smaller air intake ahead of the rear wheels. This sits below the more

pronounced side intake, with both feeding clean, cool air into the side radiators which are more prominent to offer increased cooling. The retractable hard top stows below a colour-coded tonneau cover, and the engine remains visible through a lightweight vented polycarbonate engine cover. At the rear, the lightweight titanium crossover twin exhausts exit below the active ‘Longtail’ Airbrake which is 50 percent larger than other Super Series models. This is integrated in to the design of the flowing rear wings and despite the larger size, carbon fibre construction ensures a colour-coded tonneau cover, and the engine remains visible through a lightweight vented polycarbonate engine cover. R ADAR Series models. This is integrated in to the design of the flowing rear wings and despite the larger size, carbon fibre construction ensures weight is actually reduced. Exposed bodywork across the rear deck and below the rear wing aids engine cooling, while louvres in the flared rear bumper optimise pressure levels. The 675LT Spider shares the suspension set up and geometry of the Coupé, with the front end sitting on new lightweight springs and a wider track – increased by 20mm. Spring rates are the most track-focused of the Super Series models, with stiffness increased 27 percent at the front and 63 percent at the rear, providing a more rearward balance and allowing for a 40 percent increase in downforce over the 650S Spider. As standard, the 675LT Spider is fitted with 10-spoke Ultra-Lightweight forged alloy wheels – 19-inch at the front,

20-inch at the rear – and P Zero™ Trofeo R tires, developed for the 675LT models in collaboration with technical partner Pirelli. These are the lightest wheel and tire set ever offered by McLaren. Two Super-Lightweight wheel options are optionally available; a new 20-spoke design, offered in liquid metal or diamond cut finishes, and the five-spoke Super-Lightweight design which debuted on the Coupé. The lightweight theme continues throughout the interior with Alcantara® and bare carbon fibre used extensively. A pair of lightweight carbon fibre-shelled racing seats, modelled on those fitted to the McLaren P1™, save a combined 15kg, and feature ‘675LT’ embossed leather to provide enhanced levels of support and grip. As seen in the McLaren P1™ and 675LT, heating and ventilation controls are located within the portraitorientated, centrally-mounted touchscreen, which also operates the

four-speaker Meridian audio system, while air conditioning has been removed. The 16kg system can be specified as a no-cost-option. The ‘By McLaren’ interior themes were first introduced on the 675LT Coupé, and are again available for the Spider model. The range is extended for the 675LT Spider, with the addition of exclusive Xenon Yellow contrast stitch. Similarly, the full exterior paint palette offered on the 675LT Coupé is available for the Spider model, which includes the new Silica White, Delta Red, Napier Green and Chicane Grey paint finishes. In addition, the newly developed deep golden colour, Solis – which derives its name from the Latin for sun – is a bespoke colour only available on the open-top 675LT Spider. Further enhancements can be made through the Club Sport Professional Pack, which adds further visual carbon fibre and stealth detailing. Available in Titanium Silver,

RA DA R Storm Grey, Onyx Black and Chicane Grey, the Ultra-Lightweight wheels are stealth finished, while a satin carbon fibre finish is applied to the front wing end plates, lower side air intake and the centre of the rear bumper, along with the side intakes, wheelarches, wing mirrors and ‘Longtail’ Airbrake. McLaren Orange detailing is then applied both externally and internally, with brake callipers, embossed leather and stitching all in the heritage colour made famous by the Formula 1™ and Can-Am racers of Bruce McLaren, While retaining much of the track-focus and capability of the Coupé, the Club Sport Pack – comprising titanium rollhoop, four point harnesses and fire extinguisher – is not available as an option for the 675LT Spider. Another key characteristic of any Longtail is exclusivity, and the 675LT Spider is no exception. As with the Coupé, production of the 675LT Spider will be strictly limited to only 500 examples, with first deliveries

in summer 2016. THE STORY OF LT The story of the McLaren F1 is one of the most famous in automotive history, with the all-conquering GTR moving the game on further, worthy of a place in the motorsport hall of fame. After a successful season in 1995 and 1996, McLaren set about raising the bar once more in order to stay ahead of the competition. While the name and basic architecture remained the same, the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ – or LT – was completely re-engineered from the ground up, and was the ultimate version of the iconic McLaren F1. With enhanced levels of downforce through extended bodywork, and dramatic weight savings, the end result was the most track-focused derivative of all 106 models to wear the McLaren F1 badge. The McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ raced successfully during the 1997 sports car

racing season, including most prominently in the FIA GT championship against specially developed racing ‘prototypes’, and went within a whisker of winning the world title. Notable achievements included victory in the Silverstone 4 hours, the Hockenheim 4 hours, the Spa 4 hours and a 1-2 class finish – 2-3 overall – at the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite racing against the much quicker LMP cars, only one lap separated the #41 McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ from outright victory. The nearest opposition in the GT1 class finished nearly 30 laps behind. And so, McLaren has done it again. ‘LT’ is now the ultra-high-performance brand, re-establishing the McLaren ‘Longtail’ heritage. With two models now wearing the iconic badge, the 675LT Coupé and 675LT Spider embody the ‘Longtail’ ethos, with a focus on light weight, enhanced aerodynamics, increased power, trackfocused dynamics and driver engagement.

hen the Lexus LF-LC Concept debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, the press, loyal customers, and enthusiasts wondered if the concept’s arresting styling and dramatic proportions could ever evolve into a production 2+2 coupe. Today, four years after the debut of the breakthrough concept that inspired it, Lexus has revealed the all-new LC 500 luxury coupe. This provocative, athletic flagship coupe—makes the strongest statement yet about the brand’s future product direction. The past five years have seen Lexus evolve rapidly with the creation of the luxury brand’s globallyfocused organization, Lexus International. Exciting new models involving elevated levels of emotional styling and dynamic driving characteristics such as NX, RC, and IS have also helped propel the brand’s shift with consumers. Akio Toyoda has been at the center of the Lexus global expansion, personally driving a heightened level of collaboration between design, engineering and marketing teams to help build a luxury brand better suited to meet the needs of the next generation of consumers. “The LC 500 has been an important product for Lexus and me personally,” said Akio Toyoda, Chief Branding Officer and Master Driver for Lexus. “A few years ago, we decided to guide the future of the brand with products that had more passion and distinction in the luxury market. This flagship luxury coupe’s proportions, stunning design and performance make a strong statement about our brands’ emotional direction, and will grow the Lexus luxury appeal globally. Design and Engineering Teams United Beyond its styling and impactful performance, the new LC 500 serves as a symbol of the achievement that can result from heightened collaboration between design and engineering groups, and their commitment to help overcome each other’s hurdles. When Akio Toyoda challenged these development groups to produce this special car, it meant surpassing many manufacturing, design, material, and dynamic obstacles that could typically compromise a vehicle’s targets or design vision. The LC 500 was driven by a strong, appealing fundamental design target (LF-LC), and engineering teams worked tirelessly to find new solutions to maintain as much of the concept in the production car as possible. Likewise, vehicle designers were very involved from the earliest stages of the dynamic development process to understand the engineering targets and collaborate with design viewpoints and potential solutions. With LC 500, additional levels of prototype vehicle build also allowed both teams to better study design or engineering ideas and refine key elements. For the Lexus organization, the LC 500 project became much more than simply the development of a new coupe. maqinaonline.com / 2016 MARCH 113

LEXUS LC 500

LEXUS LC Design and Engineering Teams United Beyond its styling and impactful performance, the new LC 500 serves as a symbol of the achievement that can result from heightened collaboration between design and engineering groups, and their commitment to help overcome each other›s hurdles. When Akio Toyoda challenged these development groups to produce this special car, it meant surpassing many manufacturing, design, material, and dynamic obstacles that could typically compromise a vehicle›s targets or design vision. The LC 500, with the shift in engineering processes and

design ideologies it represents, symbolizes the beginning of a new phase for the Lexus brand. “Design and engineering sides worked together on issues and obstacles that were overcome one by one. I feel we achieved something greater than simply preserving the spirit of the concept›s design” said Chief Engineer Koji Sato.

Exterior Design At first glance, it becomes apparent that the engineering and design team›s collaboration was highly successful considering how much of the LF-LC›s design ideology the team was able to transfer into the new LC 500. The new production model shares many of the key design elements, proportions and visual dynamism of the concept car that inspired it. The LC 500›s visual appeal is defined by an athletic aerodynamic shape, with sensual curves, emotional forms, an available flowing carbon-fiber roof (glass roof standard), creating a low, wide imposing stance that come together for a highly functional, passionate package. The LC 500›s front fascia features a powerful interpretation of Lexus› signature “spindle” grille, bordered by chrome on three sides and a radical new 3D mesh design that varies its visual tension. unit specially designed to include one of the industry›s thinnest projectors to enable a low hood with a short front overhang. Functional venting also play into the LC 500›s exterior design to help improve aerodynamic stability and cooling. The car›s athletic profile is characterized by its fast, sloped roofline, its wind-cutting silhouette, a long 2,870 mm wheelbase with compact front 920 mm and rear 970mm overhangs and low hood height. The sexy curves and flowing lines maintain a consistent tension in sheetmetal through to the rear end that features slimly designed, multi-layered tail lamps with a unique lighting effect that helps convey a sequential L motif. A rear diffuser and available active rear spoiler also help manage airflow during performance driving. It rides on machined cast aluminum -20in. or available -21in. forged aluminum wheels.

Interior Design The interior design of the LC 500 is influenced by the dynamic luxury theme of the exterior with a layout that is both cockpit-focused and elegant. The coupe›s driving position was calibrated to invite spirited, sporting driving, and help develop easier confidence with a more intuitive control layout. In fact, for LC 500, the driver›s hip point was 116 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

engineered to be as close as possible to the vehicle›s Cg (Center of gravity) where feedback from the car is the most communicative to the driver. The front seats offer excellent support and comfort for long drives while available sport seats offer additional bolstering and lateral support during cornering. Lexus engineers put considerable effort into creating an engaging yet seductive atmosphere for the driver, focusing on details such as the size and angle of the steering wheel, the feel and positioning of magnesium alloy paddle shifters, and available supple leather and Alcantara seating surfaces. The LC 500›s exquisite door panels, center console and dash pad structures feature elements of Lexus› world-renowned, detail-obsessed Takumi craftsmanship in their finish.

LEXUS LC “At an early stage, the designers collaborated with the engineers to understand their image for the LC 500›s driving dynamics, and they incorporated this into the design,” said Tadao Mori, the chief designer of the LC 500. “For example, we gave serious consideration to where the driver›s eyes would focus, and designed the surface shape in that area to help support a driver›s mindset. This project was one of the first time that designers

were closely involved in the dynamic engineering development so we could understand the driving goals and support with the car›s design.

Chassis In helping to drive the future of the Lexus brand, the mission for LC 500 was to offer a dynamic driving experience and character unlike any Lexus vehicle prior to it. The pursuit of a sharper, more refined driving experience became the mission for the development team who also sought to maintain a superior Lexus ride quality befitting a flagship luxury sport coupe. The LC 500 is the first Lexus to use the brand›s all-new, premium rear-wheel-drive luxury platform that does not share with any current Lexus models and is part of the new corporate global architecture for luxury vehicles(GA-L). The underpinnings of this new coupe will become the blueprint for the company›s future front-engine/rear-wheel-drive vehicles. In an effort to sharpen the car›s handling, the LC 500›s engineers focused on the platform›s fundamentals by placing most of the mass, including the engine and the occupants, in a position more centralized and lower in the chassis to improve the center of gravity. Internally, Lexus engineers referred to this menu of massarranging tactics as the “inertia spec”. The driver hip and heel points have been lowered, wheels pushed to the corners of the car with shortened overhangs, and the drivetrain mass has been located behind the front axle line to create a front mid-ship layout. The LC 500 also relies on

run-flat tires to improve packaging, reduce weight (thanks to no spare), and help shorten overhangs in the interest of dynamic targets. The -12volt battery has been relocated to the trunk as part of the mission to redistribute weight. Other mass management measures include the available carbon fiber roof, aluminum door skins mounted to the carbon fiber door inner structure, and a composite trunk floor. The LC 500 also represents the Lexus brand›s most intensive use of high-strength steel. This provides enhanced rigidity, while reducing—and ideally positioning—vehicle mass to optimize dynamics. As a result, the LC 500 is very balanced with a nearly ideal front/rear weight distribution of 48/52. To help achieve the level of chassis performance targeted for this new coupe, Lexus engineered the stiffest unibody the brand has ever produced. For LC 500, the strategic use of lightweight, high-strength steel helps make for a high degree of torsional rigidity that is more resistant to twisting forces than the exotic, carbon fiber-intensive LFA supercar. The platform design maintains a consistent level of resistance to flexural forces and stiffness across the vehicle›s wheelbase to help create consistent, predictable handling behavior, and sharper steering responses. Special braces in the engine compartment (usually a more twistprone part of the chassis), the adoption of stiff aluminum front suspension towers, and the addition of a ring structure near the rear fenders are all measures that help further bolster the strength of key chassis structures. Particular attention was devoted to the LC 500›s multilink

suspension system. Double ball joints on the upper and lower control arms allow for control of the smallest movements from the driver inputs and road conditions. Beyond sharing workload, a dual ball joint arrangement helps optimize suspension geometry to increase wheel control and create a more precise steering response with better initial effort. To help reduce unsprung mass and improve suspension response, all but one of the control arms are made of lightweight forged aluminum. Providing the grip on the show prototype car are Michelin Sport tires: 40/245RF21 up front and 35/275RF21 at the rear. When all the handling elements come together, LC 500 becomes a worldclass luxury sports coupe that exhibits razor-sharp reflexes, exceptional handling balance and rock-solid stability. This all-new platform will continue to undergo continuous improvement and enhancement throughout the vehicle›s lifecycle. Said Sato: “We spent more than triple the usual amount of R&D time to pursue linear steering and to find the sweet spot for road contact feel. We also focused our efforts on suspension rigidity and enhancing geometry. Thanks to advancements in product engineering, we are now at a world-class level for suspension rigidity, and performance when lateral g›s are applied.”

Drivetrain The power delivery to the rear wheels for LC 500 is handled by a new, very well matched set of components that 118 MARCH 2016 / maqinaonline.com

maximize output to the wheels. The heart of the new LC 500 is derived from the proven, high-revving -5.0liter V8 that is found in the RC F and GS F. The naturally aspirated V8 was selected for its smooth, linear throttle response and emotional engine sound. The allaluminum, -32valve V8›s output targets 467 HP and 389 lb.-ft. of torque. The new engine is built for durability with lightweight, high-strength forged connecting rods and titanium valves that allow the engine to flourish at high rpm. The engine in the LC 500 uses a dual intake inlet that help improve breathing and allow the engine to produce its fantastic sound. This naturally aspirated engine makes an ideal pairing to a balanced sports coupe with its linear power delivery that allows easier control and exhilaration behind the wheel. The LC 500›s special exhaust soundcontrol valves activate during start-up, helping to provide a robust growl when coming to life. During acceleration, a Sound Generator enhances the engine›s raucous melody into an aural thunder that helps distinguish the LC 500 in its competitive segment. Helping power transfer to the rear wheels is a newly developed -10speed automatic transmission—the first ever in a luxury automobile—with shift times rivaling those of a dual-clutch transmission. The component is smaller and lighter than some current -8speed transmissions. The wide bandwidth of shifting afforded by 10 closely spaced gears is ideal for all forms of driving, providing an optimal gear in all

conditions. This transmission is matched to a new electric control system with software that helps anticipate the driver›s inputs by monitoring acceleration, braking and lateral g forces. The new transmission is just one key element in a vehicle that has had all of its dynamic control elements such as power application, braking, and steering tuned to operate rhythmically in sport driving conditions. Drivers will feel the controlled balance between the quick, smooth shifting actions, the application of linear engine power, and the deceleration afforded by -6piston brake calipers. All of the platform and drivetrain engineering helped endow the LC 500 with performance and agility uncommon for a four-person coupe; the vehicle targets a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 4.5 seconds.

Interior Electronics This flagship coupe will debut the 2017 Lexus Multimedia package that will feature updated, faster, and more flexible software enabling future enhancements and a graphic user interface. Occupants will also be treated to an exceptional audio experience inside the cabin: in addition to the available audiophileworthy Mark Levinson audio package, a new premium Pioneer audio system comes as standard equipment. Pioneer›s sound engineers worked in collaboration with LC 500 body and cabin designers to enhance interior sound performance within the cabin, studying the acoustic environment and driving structural changes to enhance sound performance. The LC 500 will also boast Lexus› renowned safety technology, Lexus Safety System + , which integrates several of Lexus›s active safety technologies: the Pre-Collision System (PCS) helps prevent and mitigate collisions; Lane Keep Assist (LKA) helps prevent vehicles from departing from their lanes; Automatic High Beam (AHB) helps ensure optimal forward visibility during nighttime driving, and All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (All-speed DRCC). As part of a multi-faceted approach to active safety, the Lexus Safety System.

VALENTINE’S DAY

FRANCK MULLER

FRANCK MULLER To celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, Franck Muller presents the Chronograph Conquistador Sport GPG for men. The Franck Muller Chronograph Conquistador Sport GPG is a powerful combination of technology and aesthetic excellence. This novelty of the legendary Cintrée Curvex body certainly has a bit of attitude, but is still very sporty. The flammé silvered or black dial with applied indexes and super luminova relief numerals positions the watch as a true adventurous masculine character. The body of the Chronograph Conquistador Sport GPG is strengthened by a combination of different materials. This time, the Master of Complication has opted for a high-tech alloy, the ultra-light and highly robust Ergal, which is treated by anodization to improve its resistance to corrosion and abrasion. Commonly used in Formula 1 and the aerospace industry, Ergal is extremely resistant in relation to its weight and thus furthers the brand’s mechanical prowess. TOP TEN TIPS ON BUSINESS CARD ETIQUETTE

1 Make sure to have plenty of business cards before leaving home or office: Adequate number of business card should be available to avoid embarrassment and the usual provided excuses “I’m sorry, I forgot to get” or “I’m sorry, I just gave out the last one”, etc.…

2 Keep the business cards always protected in a cardholder: to keep it clean and neat as it always reflects your professional and personal image.

3 Locate the business card in a constant dedicated location in the suit must be permanently used for locating the business card at all times to avoid searching in every pocket or in the brief case.

4 Hand out the business card in a confident and discrete manner where body language and tone of voice are integrated together to provide a professional image.

5 Ask permission before giving someone your business card. Simply ask: “May I give you my card?” or “Shall we exchange business cards”. Ask privately “one-on-one” not in front of a group to avoid embarrassment.

6 Use both hands to present and receive a business card: hand the card with a slight nod or bow and by holding the top corner so it can be read easily: receiving and presenting the card with the right hand can be accepted.

7 Say thank you and take time to glance at the card and make a point of reviewing the card by commenting on it (the logo, the company, find out something about the person, etc.)

8 Place the received card in a nice cardholder in the suit jacket and never in a pocket below the belt: it’s disrespectful to put a card in the back pocket or wallet and sit on it.

9 Keep your business cards up to date: If any contact information changes, it has to be changed immediately. No marked out numbers or e-mails on the card.

10 Capitalize on the meeting: A follow up call or an email to be sent is highly recommendable in order not to waist the benefit of the first meeting.
