A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Dear Reader, Thanks again for making the second issue of Maqina Magazine a resounding success. We’re excited to present this, our third issue as the future grows brighter yet. Of particular note, this issue looks closely at the new Cadillac CT6, and the mighty 911 GTS. Both cars represent the future just differing visions that, with a little luck, will always coexist. We’re chuffed to see Caddy gaining on the horizon line of cool, inspired luxury. Meanwhile the 911 spins a tale of effortless power, and mindfulness of a great and important motoring history. I wouldn’t say the pairing is oil and water, but like those two things we definitely need both. Whatever your own impressions are, I think you’ll welcome this opportunity to get the Maqina take on two of the most exciting rides going today. Whatever the future holds, we’ll be there to sniff the tailpipes and kick the tyres. Enjoy the issue,

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso arrives in Qatar

Al

Fardan Sports Motor, the official importer of Ferrari in Qatar, announced the arrival of the brand new Ferrari GTC4Lusso at a glittering launch ceremony. The new four-seater marks a major evolution of the sporting Grand Tourer concept by integrating rear-wheel steering with four-wheel drive for the first time. The GTC4Lusso’s name references illustrious predecessors, such as the 330 GTC or its 2+2 sister model, the 330 GT and the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, which represented a sublime combination of elegance and high performance. The number 4 alludes to the car’s four comfortable seats. Powered by a 12-cylinder engine, the GTC4Lusso punches out a massive 690 cv at a 8,000 rpm and peak torque of 697 Nm at 5,750 rpm, with 80% available at just 1,750 rpm, the GTC4Lusso delivers an astonishing top speed of 335 km/h and sprints from 0 to 100 km in 3.4 seconds. Both its 13.5:1 compression ratio and its 2.6 kg/cv weight-to-power-ratio set new records for the category. “The GTC4Lusso brings unprecedented versatility to Ferrari driving, enabling our customers to discover a whole new dimension of Ferrari. The strikingly sporty coupe promises to satisfy customers with a thirst for speed and power,

without compromising on in-car comfort, sporty elegance and impeccable detailing. Ferrari Qatar is always committed to deliver beyond our customer’s expectations and offer them the pleasure of driving a Ferrari anywhere, anytime,” said Charly Dagher, General Manager Ferrari Qatar at Alfardan Sports Motors. Penned by Ferrari Design, the GTC4Lusso is a further refinement of the shooting brake coupé that comes with an extremely streamlined, tapered shape giving it an almost fastback-like silhouette. Its sporty soul is underscored by the forms and styling of the rear where the curve of the roof has been lowered whilst retaining enough volume to guarantee exceptional space and comfort for all four occupants, as well as an ample luggage compartment. The supercar coupe’s interior exudes a flawless air of sporty luxury thanks to the carefully executed detailing. Its Dual Cockpit architecture is another first, designed to enhance the shared driving experience for both driver and passenger. The GTC4Lusso also debuts the new Infotainment platform featuring a 10.25” HD screen with capacitive touch technology. The new steering wheel is more compact thanks to a smaller air bag and the integrated controls are more ergonomic than ever, making for an even sportier driving experience. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 13

The most powerful letter comes to Qatar The BMW M4 GTS and BMW M2 Coupe

T

he BMW M4 GTS comes with six cylinder in-line twin turbo engine generating 500 horse power The BMW M2 accelerates from 0 to 100 in 4.3 seconds Alfardan Automobiles welcomed the eagerly anticipated BMW M4 GTS and BMW M2 models to Qatar this month. Bringing motor racing genes wrapped in an exciting design and coupled with unlimited everyday usability, these exceptional M models offer a combination that has defined the character of the M automobiles from the start and mustering a large following of loyal M fans globally. The BMW M4 GTS is a special edition limited to 700 units to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the BMW M3. The new model combines powerful, motor sport-inspired looks with high-performance technology to further enhance the capabilities and appeal of the BMW M4. The limited edition model comes with a six-cylinder in-line turbo engine with innovative water injection technology to give the 3.0-litre unit a substantial power boost. The water 16 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

injection system raises the engine’s output significantly – to 368 kW/500 hp – and increases torque to 600 Nm (442 lb-ft), giving it the ability to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 3.8 seconds and hits a limited top speed of 305 km/h (189.5 mph). The standard-fitted seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) selects the optimum ratio for every driving situation with no interruption in the flow of power as it makes its way to the rear wheels. The driver can also select gears manually using either shift paddles on the steering wheel or the selector lever. The Drivelogic shift programs and Launch Control have been retuned to the engine’s increased output. The weight-minimised, exclusive M light-alloy wheels in star-spoke 666 M Styling are forged and polished, and come in Acid Orange. Joining the limited edition M4 GTS is the model that made its Middle East debut at the Qatar Motor Show – the BMW M2 Coupé. It comes as a successor to the BMW 1 Series M Coupé and continues the tradition of the compact high-performance BMW sports cars

that started over 40 years ago with the BMW 2002 turbo. With the M2 Coupé’s powerful six-cylinder in-line engine with either automatic or manual gearbox producing, 272 kW/370 hp and 465 Nm, rear-wheel-drive agility, lightweight aluminium M Sport suspension and extrovert styling, it has all the ingredients to deliver sheer driving pleasure. With the lightweight aluminium front and rear axles from the BMW M3/M4 models, forged 19-inch aluminium wheels with mixedsize tyres, M Servotronic steering with two settings and suitably effective M compound brakes, the new BMW M2 Coupé has raised the bar once again in the compact highperformance sports car segment when it comes to driving dynamics. The electronically controlled Active M Differential, which optimises traction and directional stability, also plays a significant role here. And even greater driving pleasure is on the cards when the Dynamic Stability Control system’s M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is activated. MDM allows wheel slip and therefore moderate, controlled drifts on the track. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 17

‘INSPIRED BY MUSIC’ 18 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

LO C AL N EW S

LOC AL N E W S

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has contributed to the myth and legend of the contemporary music scene since the birth of Rock & Roll. Over half a century later, this long-standing love affair lives on, with some of the world’s most celebrated artists choosing the marque as the ultimate affirmation of their success. In this spirit, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is delighted to announce the arrival of the Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’ in Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha, the sole authorised dealership for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Qatar. Since the launch of Wraith in 2013, customers have been able to commission their Rolls-Royce Wraith with Bespoke Audio; the most exhaustively designed sound system in automotive history. Like every element of a Rolls-Royce motor car, its construction blends the finest components with the skill of the most eminent experts in their field. Now, with Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’, these characteristics, and the precious materials used in the Bespoke Audio system, are brought very much to the fore, creating ‘the most exclusive music venue’ that delivers an unrivalled aural experience. “Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’ appeals to those looking to Rolls-Royce for unique and creative motor cars. Its effortlessly cool appearance complements the superior Bespoke Audio system; the contemporary use of copper creates an atmospheric setting for the most encompassing music system on the market,” commented Torsten Müller Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. A Lyrical Copper exterior paint finish, presented with a blend of brushed and polished textures elegantly hints at the use of copper in only the very best audio systems. On opening the car’s coach-doors attention is drawn to re-imagined speaker grilles, here presented in copper theme, and engraved with the words ‘Bespoke Audio’. The door panniers and floor mats have been crafted from finely-woven leather to add an additional depth of tactility to the car’s interior cabin. Copper-coloured door inserts, which start at the front of the cabin before tapering at the rear, have been included in the design to emphasise Wraith’s characteristic internal curves. A book matched copper finish features for the

first time on Wraith’s fascia, boldly extending the car’s theme. The same copper tone extends to Wraith’s signature seat bullets. The fastidious detail that went into the development of the car’s sound-system is employed in every facet of the construction of the car. For example, the chaplets on the clock have been designed and meticulously crafted with a combination of warming copper and silver, whilst the radial lines of the outer bezel playfully emulate the look and feel of vinyl records. The Bespoke Audio system was created from scratch by a team of the world’s very best automotive audio engineers. The two-year development process saw the team work closely with Rolls-Royce interior designers to ensure the system was perfectly tuned to the interior of the cabin. Indeed, this pursuit of aural perfection was deemed so important the interior designers had to consult with the Chief Audio Engineer before making any changes. The extraordinary clarity of sound and dynamic range is delivered via a 1300W, 18 channel system comprising two highly powerful bass speakers, seven tweeters and seven mid range speakers. Two ‘exciter’ speakers hand-fitted in the car’s headlining play a vital role in bringing the sound to the listener at ear-level; ensuring the output perfectly imitates the way music is experienced in a live setting. Microphones constantly monitor ambient and exterior noises and will adjust volume and tone settings automatically to ensure no external agent detracts from the user’s listening pleasure. Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’ completes a trilogy of striking and distinctive Bespoke Collections. The first, Wraith ‘Inspired by Film’ celebrates Rolls-Royce’s long association with the silver screen whilst, Wraith ‘Inspired by Fashion’ allows customers to commission a true piece of automotive haute couture inspired by the materials and motifs of cutting-edge high fashion. Rolls-Royce: the ‘Rock & Roll’ years: In January 1961, Elvis Presley walked into the Beverley Hills Rolls-Royce dealership. Flush with the success of his music career and a five-year movie deal, he ordered a Rolls-Royce Phantom V; the only motor car in the world that could possibly befit his status as the ‘King of Rock & Roll’. From that day on, a Rolls-

Royce motor car became the conveyance of choice for the music scene’s burgeoning elite. Many of these cars have taken their place in automotive and music folklore. John Lennon, for example, acquired a Phantom V in 1965. During his ownership he commissioned a number of cutting-edge additions for the time including; a television, portable refrigerator, record player and the first blacked-out windows to appear on a car in England. He was so enamoured with the interior comfort of the finest riding car in the world, he is reported to have converted the rear bench-seat into a double bed. However, it is his car’s exterior that ensures its place in the pantheon of famous Rolls-Royces. Not satisfied with the Phantom’s stately Valentines Black finish, he commissioned a Dutch art collective to re-paint the car in a psychedelic motif designed to mirror the decorations on fairground caravans. The result was not met with universal acclaim, with Lennon often recounting the tale of a woman who chased the car, shouting, “You swine! You swine! How dare you do that to a Rolls-Royce!” One particular story resulting from the music world’s love affair with Rolls-Royce has segued from folklore to infamy. It concerns The Who drummer, Keith Moon and the night of his 21st birthday at the Holiday Inn in Flint Michigan. Legend goes that a somewhat high spirited Mr Moon drove his Rolls-Royce into the hotel’s swimming pool. This is categorically untrue and is probably an overblown conflation of two stories. The first, involves a regrettable yet entirely understandable lapse of concentration, with Mr Moon failing to fully secure his Rolls-Royce’s handbrake. Unfortunately he had parked on a slope leading to a half-constructed swimming pool. The car made a characteristically graceful descent down the hill before coming to rest at the bottom of the unfilled pool. The second is a little closer to the legend. On purchasing a new American car he tried to charge it to the band’s account, naturally they refused to indulge his request. Mr Moon expressed his displeasure by parking the car in an ornamental pond before telephoning the dealer to take it away. Not something he would ever have done to his beloved Rolls-Royce.

New Prius Wins Admirers

LOC AL N E W S

The amazing New Prius has finally arrived. The world is heavily praising Toyota’s latest release, which is more advanced than anyone could have imagined. Here in the Middle East, the introduction of the Prius is likely to change perceptions about environmentally friendly vehicles while adding a new look to the city streets.

Revolutionary Design

Stunning Hybrid Performance

Praise for Performance Evolution

The latest Prius model finally made its Middle East debut in February 2016, and doubtless the conversation will immediately turn to the hybrid system at its heart. The Toyota Hybrid System combines a gasoline engine and electric motor to create an unparalleled environmental performance as well as an impressive driving experience. The new Prius is about far more than the exceptional fuel efficiency that comes with hybrid technology. The ample torque also delivers exhilarating acceleration that belies the engine’s 1.8-litre displacement. Without a doubt, the Prius represents the pinnacle of hybrid technology and a showcase for new, relevant technologies from Toyota that raise levels of driving performance, convenience and comfort.

The design of the Prius isn’t the only thing turning heads. The latest model was developed to represent the first wave of Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA)—the company’s latest auto- making innovation that makes a fresh start by putting the joy of driving above all else. Just imagine pressing the accelerator and silently gaining speed with just the motor. Before you know it, the engine and motor are working together in a way that is almost eerily smooth. The steering wheel responds with precision in the hands as the Prius goes exactly where you want it to go, rounding the turns with delightful handling accuracy. With its maiden entry into the Middle East, drivers here are sure to be pleasantly surprised and overwhelmingly satisfied by the entire driving experience.

22 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

The prototype for the Prius was unveiled in September 2015 in Las Vegas. Murmurs of wonder and amazement at its revolutionary new design could be heard bubbling through the media crowds that gathered to see it suspended from wires as it literally descended onto the stage. Media reports in the Middle East have also commented on the dramatic makeover of the Prius which has resulted in an edgy, emotional styling that completely overturns people’s established notions. Toyota’s commitment to such a memorable, cutting-edge design and the impetus for moving forward with it came from none other than the pioneering hybrid vehicle itself. In fact, the name Prius means “to go before,” and it is in the DNA of the Prius to constantly push the limits of the human imagination.

‘Beautiful Hybrid’ It is no surprise that the hybrid technology in the Prius delivers outstanding environmental performance, but the ‘Beautiful Hybrid’ development concept takes it to the next level in terms of design and driving performance as well—drawing praise from around the globe. The development team wanted to give the world fresh value built on cutting-edge hybrid technology, with a design that speaks to the heart, fun-to-drive handling, and a socially responsible presence. A beautiful car for a more beautiful earth—the Prius once again ushers us into the future. What fresh revolution will the new Prius bring? It starts with the voices of individuals who experience the vehicle for the first time. And now it’s your turn to join in. Go see a Prius up close, test drive it, and experience its true value for yourself. The car that has charmed people all over the world is sure to capture the hearts of those in the Middle East as well. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 23

he new Porsche 718 Boxster has arrived in Qatar, following a comprehensive redevelopment of the mid-engine roadster for more power, increased torque, a higher top speed and a stylish redesign. Twenty years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is introducing a new model designation with the generation change. The models are now known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S. A direct descendant of the victorious 718 which took numerous race wins in the 1950s and 1960s, the new two-seater convertibles continue the tradition of four-cylinder flat engines, featuring the latest technology evolved by Porsche’s engineers. When compared to the previous generation, both models attest a gain of 35 hp and up to 13 per cent lower consumption. The 718 Boxster is driven by a newly developed, 2-litre, 300 hp engine with innovative turbocharging. The increase in torque is even more dramatic with a 35 per cent rise and results in a maximum of up to 380 Newton metres. Featuring a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG), the 718 Boxster S boasts 2.5 litres of engine displacement and 350 hp, with maximum torque at 420 Newton metres. When equipped with Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and Sport Chrono Package, the new 718 Boxster accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, whilst the S-version achieves the same in 4.2 seconds. The top speed for the base model is 275 km/h; its bigger sibling tops out at 285km/h. The comprehensive rework of the new model has been well documented with just the boot lid, windscreen and soft top preserved from its predecessor. At a glance, the revised exterior is wider and more powerful, with larger cooling intakes and the inimitable Porsche bi-xenon headlights featuring integrated LED daytime

running lights. From the side, independently styled wings and side sills deliver a sharp new look around large 18-inch wheels as standard on the 718 Boxster, and 19-inch wheels on the S model. The reshaped rear body has a stronger presence, especially due to the accent strip with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights. The completely redesigned lights stand out, thanks to their three-dimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights. Inside the cockpit of the 718 Boxster, upgraded elements, such as high quality leather with uninterrupted stitching, create greater sophistication. Meanwhile, state-ofthe-art technology compliments the driving experience, with a newly designed dash panel that includes the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) operated by touchscreen as standard. Speaking on the arrival of the new roadster Salman Jassem Al Darwish, Chairman and CEO of Porsche Centre Doha, Al Boraq Automobiles, commented: “The 718 Boxster is the sportiest of all time, carrying forward the philosophy of the legendary 718 which delivered over 1,000 race victories. It is remarkable that Porsche’s engineers have managed to achieve such outstanding increases in power, acceleration and torque from the newly designed four-cylinder engine. Especially as these performance enhancements come with a lower weight and a substantial improvement in efficiency. Both on a technical and excitement level the new 718 Boxster is beyond comparison and the same goes for its styling which is simultaneously powerful and sophisticated.

With such an impressive addition to our convertible range, we expect the 718 Boxster to continue its growth in Qatar.” In action, the two-seat convertibles are built for passionate and sporty driving, facilitated by not only a newly tuned chassis and improved brakes but also through increased rigidity in the suspension and roll-bars. The roadster also boasts 10 per cent more direct steering which comes from the 911 Turbo, making the model even more agile and easier to handle. The optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), available for the Boxster S, now offers a 20 mm lower ride height, enabling it to tackle fast corners with ease. In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package and derived from the 911, the new 718 Boxster now features a switch on the steering wheel for four driving modes as well as a Sport Response button for models equipped with PDK. Inspired by motorsport, pushing this button makes the response of the engine and PDK very direct for a period of 20 seconds. Taken together, the synergy of the latest developments of the 718 Boxster deliver benchmark-setting results. It is expected that the new S-model will perform a lap of the North Loop of the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 42 seconds, 16 seconds faster than its predecessor and very close to that of the race-track primed Cayman GT4. The new Porsche 718 Boxster models are available in Qatar now with a basic retail price of: 718 Boxster 718 Boxster S

BMW 2002 Hommage. 50 years of pure driving pleasure.

M

unich/Cernobbio. The BMW Group has created a very special car for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to pay tribute to one of the most significant models in its history. First and foremost, the BMW 2002 Hommage celebrates the extraordinary feats of engineering behind the BMW 2002 turbo – and re-imagines them as a design study for our times. “Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles 26 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

which made the brand what it is today,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.” A confident statement of unadulterated driving joy.

“The eye-catching design of the BMW 2002 Hommage employs a very dynamic, striking use of forms for its own take on what is, for me, one of the most iconic vehicles in BMW history,” says Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles. “At the same time, it encapsulates BMW’s major motor sport triumphs, which were made possible by turbo technology. As such, the Hommage car brings together the past and future of BMW into a confident statement of unadulterated driving joy.” The sporting silhouette of the BMW 2002 Hommage lies low against the road.

Its compact proportions, complete with long wheelbase, short overhangs and prominent “shark nose”, promise a driving experience that thrills with irresistible dynamics and agility. Aerodynamic details like the large spoilers at the front and rear team up with the profusion of air intakes to optimise airflow around the car and maximise downforce in every driving situation. Historic details with a modern twist. Inspired by the signature chrome strip that ringed the 02 in its day, a horizontal carbon band wraps itself around the shoulderline of the BMW 2002 Hommage and splits the body visually into separate sections. The upper tranche of roof, bonnet and boot lid has matt paintwork to prevent reflection of the sun’s rays – in a reference to racing cars of yore. The body’s lines here are minimalist, clearly drawn and flowing in nature. The lower section creates a definite contrast, with its high-gloss paintwork, very bold, sculptural surfaces, and distinctive lines that infuse the flanks with a contemporary flavour and draw the eye to the driven rear wheels. The Space Race Metal paintwork drapes itself

needed broad extensions bolted onto its body to accommodate a significantly wider track. The Hommage car integrates this detail neatly into flanks designed with clear dedication to the job at hand. Slick surfacing and precisely chiselled lines envelop the powerful wheel arches and hand them a starring role. 20-inch lightalloy wheels in bi-colour design round off the styling as the car meets the road. The modern looks of these lavishly milled, multispoke items recall the racing rims of bygone eras, while gold-coloured brake callipers bearing the M logo add an extra stamp of class. Fronted by 50 years of BMW history. The front end of the BMW 2002 Hommage is a confident and extravagantly dynamic affair; its styling bridges a gap of 50 years in combining the characteristic, horizontal graphic of the 02 range with modern elements of BMW design. The front end is framed visually by the prominent wheel arches. And the wide track and lowslung body provide an ample canvas for generously-sized surfaces. In its lines and form, the bonnet references the “spear”

headlights that provide the striking front end with its outer limits. The headlights are bordered by reflectors, whose gold colouring is a pointer to the “golden” 50th anniversary of the BMW 2002’s launch. The reflectors also reprise the yellow hue commonly found in the headlights of racing cars back in the day. An unbroken black strip creates a fitting visual platform for the kidneys and headlights, brings together the stylistic elements of the front end and, in so doing, underlines the car’s wide and athletic stance. Those with a keen eye will also pick out the turn signal repeaters, which – like those of the car’s forebear – are located separately from the headlights and embedded into a full-width strip (in carbon on the Hommage car) above them. The large front apron, a stylistic nod to those models of the 1970s, shortens the visual distance between the BMW 2002 Hommage and the road and shines a bright spotlight on its driver focus. Together with the car’s wide, sporting stance, this technically innovative, forward-thinking design sends out a message of top-class roadholding and handling flair through

over the BMW 2002 Hommage like liquid metal. In both its matt and gloss form, the light metallic blue finish changes in appearance from a brightly fluorescent blue to grey, depending on the incidence of light, and lends the surfacing a dynamic sense of depth. As a result, the car’s whole body brims with power and energy. A particularly striking feature of the car’s flanks are the voluminously moulded wheel arches, which frame the body like four brackets and add stature. In the process, they recall the homologated version of the BMW 2002 turbo, which

contour stretching down the centre of the 02 models that swells slightly into a surround for the BMW logo as it approaches the kidney grille. Further precise lines lend structure and definition to the matt surface. Occupying centre stage at the front end is the familiar BMW kidney grille. Here, it takes the form of a low-standing, connected unit, offering a flesh slant on the kidneys’ historical rendering as a cohesive design element. Sculpted, black double-bars add finesse to the details of the broad-set grille. Like the BMW 2002, the BMW 2002 Hommage also has two single

fast corners. Now, as in the heyday of the BMW 2002, design excellence and turbo technology bring unsurpassed levels of fun to twisty race tracks, country roads and mountain passes alike. The BMW Motorsport livery of the front apron and its “turbo” lettering in mirror writing casts the mind back to the original decals of the 2002 turbo, as does the exterior mirror cap on the driver’s side. Accent surfaces in exposed carbon mark the point where the front apron and side skirts hand over to the road, and also provide a technically alluring contrast to the body-coloured surfaces. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 27

Bringing matters to a sporting conclusion. The rear-end design of the BMW 2002 Hommage also calls on elements of the 2002 turbo. For example, the horizontal sub-division of the car’s generous surfaces and its clear lines make a width-emphasising and thus suitably dynamic statement, laced with modern feel. The form of the rear lights is inspired by the same historical blueprint. The almost rectangular lights provide a stylistic border for the rear end. The

28 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

glass covers have a contemporary black-panel look and only offer a view of the inner workings when the lights illuminate. All you can see when they are dormant is an unbroken black surface. As at the front of the car, this strengthens the impression of a strip wrapped around the car. The BMW logo to the right of the license plate between the two rear lights is likewise a characteristic element of 02 rear styling. The muscular wheel arches bookend the rear section and accentuate

the wide track, while precise spoiler lips bring a modern edge to the car’s detailing. A carbon diffuser integrates the now familiar two sets of twin exhaust tailpipes and wraps up the rear styling with a sporting flourish. BMW’s fresh interpretation of the BMW 2002 adopts the form of a compact sports coupe in the classical tradition of BMW Hommage cars. But more than that, the BMW 2002 Hommage represents a clear statement of how pure driving pleasure is defined in 2016.

Ferrari’s turbo-charged V8 is the overall winner of the International Engine of the Year

Ferrari has been honoured to receive a record number of awards at the International Engine of the Year Award ceremony, held at the Engine Expo 2016 in Stuttgart, this morning. With 63 jurors from more than 30 countries, the International Engine of the Year Award is one of the industry’s most coveted honours. Ferrari took the most important of them all, the overall International Engine of the Year Award, with the twin-turbo V8 that powers the 488 GTB, 488 Spider and, with a slightly different displacement, the California T. In fact, this engine also won the Performance Engine and New Engine categories, as well as the 3-litre to 4-litre displacement category. Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated 6.3-litre V12 engine that powers the F12berlinetta and F12tdf also received the Above 4-litre award. A concentration of uncompromising engineering solutions, Ferrari’s return to twin-turbo technology for the V8 range has set a new benchmark for turbo-charged engines. Zero turbo lag and a progressive delivery of torque throughout the rev range maintain unprecedented levels of driver involvement, as well as providing a signature Ferrari soundtrack and power delivery that propels the Prancing Horse into the lead in this segment. According to Graham Johnson, co-chairman, International Engine of the Year Awards, “It’s a giant leap forward for turbocharged engines in terms of efficiency, performance and flexibility. It truly is the best engine in production today and will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats.”

Ford Recreates Historic March to Aqaba with Global Truck and SUV Lineup

F

ord is recreating one of the most daring and memorable military campaigns in history, employing its built Ford tough truck and unstoppable SUV lineup to follow the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia across the desert. One hundred years ago in today’s Jordan, T.E. Lawrence led a grueling, two-month march through a desert many believed to be impassable to capture the Red Sea city of Aqaba. Even then, Ford vehicles navigated the desert terrain – archive footage shows Lawrence driving a Ford Model T throughout the region. Ford provided 40,000 Model T’s, used as ambulances, tanks and transporters, to the WWI effort. 34 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

Fast forward one century, and customers in Middle East and Africa, and indeed around the world, continue to appreciate the capability and utility of Ford’s legendary trucks and SUVs, whether in the desert or on the daily commute. Built Ford Tough is more than a slogan, it’s the DNA of Ford’s truck and unstoppable SUV lineup, and it informs the capability, comfort and innovation Ford customers expect. Ford is retracing the steps of the march of Aqaba with seven of the strongest SUVs and trucks in its stable: The F-150, Ranger, Edge, Expedition, Explorer, Escape and EcoSport. The seven-nameplate convoy will converge on the Seven Pillars Mountain in the otherworldly Wadi Rum desert, for which Lawrence’s “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” is named. “At Ford

we are incredibly proud of that we make the best trucks and SUVs in the world and what better way to demonstrate the capability and performance of Ford’s trucks and utility vehicles, than recreating the historic march to Aqaba,” said Jim Benintende, president of Ford Middle East and Africa. “T.E. Lawrence and the Arab army rode two months through the desert to take Aqaba by surprise. We’re doing it in only a few hours, with ten-fold more horsepower, off road capability, comfortable seating and storage for all passengers, individual climate controls and a host of other great technologies that make driving enjoyable and easy. Jordan is an incredibly picturesque, safe and historic backdrop in which to showcase our SUV and truck fleet.”

Ford has a long history of truck and SUV leadership. Last year, Ford sold more than 1.5 million SUVs globally and more than 1.1 million F-series and Ranger trucks. More than 33 million F-Series trucks have been sold since its inception in 1948, making it America’s best-selling vehicle for the past 39 consecutive years. The Ford Ranger is the best-selling truck in Europe and the second best-selling truck on the African continent. Ford helped create the SUV segment with the Explorer more than twenty five years ago. Since then it has sold more than 7 million globally, or one every 2 minutes. In the next few years, Ford will bring four new allnew SUV to its global lineup, complete with smart technologies, enhanced safety features, and superior comfort that empower Ford SUV owners to go anywhere – anytime. William Dalrymple, famed author and historian, is an expert on T.E. Lawrence and is part of the program. “The conquest of the Aqaba Fort via the desert was one of the most strategic and creative military victories of our time,” said Dalrymple. “It was part of a series of events in World War I that created today’s Middle East, and that continues to resonate to this day. Lawrence took great pride in his ability to endure the harshest of conditions for which the Bedouin are famous. I’m thrilled to join Ford in recreating this incredible event -- and even more so to be experiencing it from the comfort and style of a Ford SUV instead of by camelback.”

We hit the Beijing Show to check out the new Haval H7

W

hat’s this you ask? We travelled to Beijing to find out that the Haval H7 is a high-performance mid-sized SUV, expected to break new ground for Great Wall Motors in the UAE. Sure, you haven’t seen many of these exotic haulers on our shores just yet, but Swaidan Trading is looking to change that. We had the chance to demo the car briefly and, while a longer test is in order, the car performs much as expected. It feels a bit like a Hyundai Santa Fe, but looks a bit more like a Toyota product. There’s plenty of torque off the line, and the car is stable and comfortable from behind the wheel. That said, it was as short program. With its modern, broadly elegant design, Haval H7 owns the largest interior lateral space with a wheelbase of 2850 mm and an optimal dimension of 4700 mm*1925 mm*1718mm. The team at Haval says it spent extra time reaching for a high standard of interior space, including a quiet cabin environment, 5 appearance styles and 3 trim color assortments to choose from, Haval H7 is expected to be the most distinct quality SUV by its strong sense

of texture and fashion. The Haval H7 is built around a 2.0T dual-channel direct-injection turbocharged engine, which generates a maximum power of 170 kw/h and a peak torque of 355 N•m and only takes 9.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h; a 6DCT (wet, GETRAG) matched with this engine, will bring a large torque while keeping the engine in a relatively low rpm, thereby realizing a quicker throttle response and better power performance as well as the economic efficiency (only 8.5L/100km, the average data calculated both in jammed urban cycle and in uncrowded suburb cycle). The interior is loaded with virtual instrument, large panoramic glass sunroof and electrodeless electric-powered trunk lid, automatic parking assist system, cell phone interaction and online service system, and more. Designed to satisfy the C-NCAP super five-star standard, 68% of the Haval H7 body are made of highstrength steel while 12% are made of thermal-forming steel, complete with 17 active and passive safety features such as the electronic safety systems including ESP, driving monitor and side monitor. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 35

ho am I to tell you how to drive? As any Porsche staffer, PR or otherwise, will tell you that their excellent dual clutch automatic gearbox (PDK) is, by all measures, faster than even the greatest driver at the controls of a manual. But then, that doesn’t necessarily have any bearing on what a driver might actually enjoy more– blipping through gears at the flick of the fingers (or not, the paddles are yet another personal choice) or slinging the stick through the gates (not in the strict sense, but you take my meaning). I talk to owners, journalists, and professional drivers all the time who remain nostalgic for the golden age of the manual transmission. That’s a term I use 44 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

KN OW THE C AR

lightly since, while the ubiquity of the standard box has fallen off, it’s arguable that we are seeing some of the best manual transmission ever built in this same era when they are becoming scarce in the marketplace. So it’s worth noting that the new Boxster, while now a 4 cylinder turbo, still comes standard with a manual transmission— much to the relief of certain buyers. 2016 takes the Boxter S to new heights of speed, precision, and grip. And while Porsche loves to break out that aforementioned list at the dealership, they also have a habit of packing certain iterations of their cars with so many tasty refinements as to make buying ala carte something of a fool’s errand. Although really, quite a number of

Middle East Porsche buyers simply want what they want, and cost is only a minor consideration once they cross that threshold. The headline here is the newly developed four-cylinder flat engine with turbocharging. The 718 Boxster develops 300 hp of power from two litres of engine displacement, while the 718 Boxster S manages 350 hp thanks in part to its variable turbine geometry. You might be wondering how much you’ll feel that difference off the line and the, not very satisfying, answer is: somewhat. It might beg the question, how much is it worth to beat your friend, cousin, or boss etc, in a drag race, assuming they have a Boxster, or it might be more important to you to know that you will clearly hear the difference.

According to the stopwatch department in Stuttgart, the Sport Chrono package, PDK equipped Boxster will do the 0-100 battle charge in an impressive 4.7 seconds, thundering up to a top speed of 275kph. The Boxster S shaves that to 4.2 seconds. Handling all that power in context, available Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) offers several levels of dampening to suit your driving mood. The Boxster will go from nearly track day stiff, to lazy Saturday cruise in the push of a button, making it a decent daily driver for those of us unencumbered by children, large groups of friends who insist on riding along, or acute shopping addictions. Riding on 19 inchers (20’s are available) the car evinces what my instructor at Porsche Sport Driving School in Leipzig once called the “planted Porsche prerogative.” Or something like that, his accent was kind of thick. The point is the Boxster S enjoys a robust purchase on the tarmac that will have you whipping through the corners like Rocky IV viewed on fast forward. Like any good sports car, the Boxster S makes you want to push yourself and the limits of traction that much harder. Good job the telegraphs the edge well in advance, keeping you on the road and out of trouble if you’re willing to listen to this fabulously feedback friendly whip.

On the road the Boxster takes on two lane winding roads with confidence and grace. Always cool under pressure, the car reacts to various road conditions smoothly, and always feels honed and ready for anything. Tighten up the dampers in Sport mode and the appreciable firmness is useful but not particularly jarring unless you hit a large bump unawares— not that I’d ever do such a thing. Inside the 718 Boxster is the familiar Porsche interior environment, now upgraded with new elements such as the instrument panel. Another central element of the new interior layout is the Porsche Communication Management unit whihc makes it easier than ever to bump tunes from your smart phone. There are plenty of upgardes on offer— the navigation module with voice control is available, but we didn’t get around to trung it. In addition, the Connect Plus module is available as well; providing extended online services, if for some reason you’re not busy caning the beast into pure motoring fury. Ultimately, this car is a more affordable alternative to the 911 that sacrifices neither track day agility nor the comfort you need to take a serious road trip in this comely beast. It’s a Porsche anyone could love, and definitely one I would love to spend more time with. Hmm, what’s the going rate for a pint of blood?

xhibits a Jekyll and Hyde split personality, thanks to it’s incredibly quiet and well insulated interior. Like many big, powerful cars, the 7 probably feels faster than it actually is. Which only matters if you’re actually racing or just obsessed with specs. I mean, it is fast, handling the 0-100kmh sprint in 4.4 seconds as per BMW, which is quite good; it’s just that it feels even faster. Human perception is limited after all and, while I know (if we can permit a brief foray out of BMW-land) that the Veyron is faster, the experience of launch control in a Carrera S is experientially so close that I’m not sure I’d be able to judge it accurately without foreknowledge. Forgive me dear reader; I’m all too human. In concert with the eight-speed steptronic transmission, the powerplant fills the cab with a symphony of automotive excitement, propelling you forward with head snapping vigor. Side note on the accelerator; I noticed that, at very low speed, the 7 tended to lurch forward until I either depressed the pedal further or released it completely. It was never really a problem, but can feel slightly disconcerting. I suppose the car just resents being driven slowly, particularly because it handles so effortlessly well, above the speed limit and within my own humble speed threshold. The 7 tucks into corners with high-speed nonchalance, as if gravity were an old school chum who, while obscenely successful, just isn›t worth being intimidated by; after all, you’ve seen their pale legs in purple gym shorts long ago. Which is to say that, even when I tried to push the 7, it always offered a smooth yet nuanced road feel that exuded confidence and competence. The car’s double aluminium track control arm front axle and the Integral-V rear axle are exclusive BMW designs, and combine with rear axle air suspension and hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering (with on demand steering servo pump) to create a ride quality that is classic BMW. And this is where the 7 really earns its luxury stripes because, picturesque scenery or not, this is a car that I can imagine enjoying on long drives. The steering has a nice heft to it, it’s on the lighter side and very comfortable across various driving conditions. Body roll is mitigated by active roll stabilization, and the electronically adjustable suspension sets the car up nicely for comfy and/or spirited driving, depending on what you’re up for. The brakes offer plenty of stopping power but could maybe be a tad more linear, although we always felt incredibly safe and assured in the 7. The car’s drivetrain is buttery beyond belief, and the rev band offers continuous torque making you to ponder whether Bentley has the “plateau” market cornered. In the blink of an eye you’ll be going faster than you realized, and hopefully it won’t be the flash of a traffic cam that alerts you to your folly. That’s because this thing is weirdly quiet when hauling serious, er, donkey. Throttle tip-in feels a teensy bit laggy here, which is counterintuitive given all the torque this car enjoys, but then it’s passed in an instant and you’re silently rocketing up to wherever your comfort level is vis-á-vis speed and your surroundings. 50 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 51

While I personally like the 7’s unique looks, which are intended as the crown jewel of the BMW stable, I had one person volunteer that they found the design a tad odd. Well, I’ll go on record as liking things that are odd, lest every car wind up looking like a Camry---not that there’s anything wrong with that. One component of the 7’s formidable touring credentials, is its full size, VIP-worthy back seats. Alternately, if your idea of a VIP is an antique desk or, maybe a Shetland pony; the rear seats can be folded down to reveal plenty of volume for storage. The storage space is large enough that the 7 easily outpaces the 5 series, and is probably closer to the X5 when it comes to hauling your possessions around. We were also very impressed with the car’s

implementation of lane control, which is perhaps the most elegant version we’ve seen. It comes WiFi equipped, and loaded with BMW apps for accessing social media. Add to which, it’s one of the few cars in which you can feel equally at home behind the wheel or in the back seat. In fact, with BMW’s remote parking functionality, you don’t have to be in the driver’s seat at all— pretty cool. BMW already had a good thing going with the 7 series, and the good news here is they haven’t managed to muck it up. One question though, should we be expecting a coupé called the 8 series any time now? Probably not but if they ever did I suppose, “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

ou can count on Civic, the wisdom goes, and countless drivers have since 1972, to reliably get them from A to B in relative comfort. If that sounds like faint praise, it’s not— creating a vehicle that can hold the kind of market share that the Civic has claimed over decades of production is no mean feat, and the car is clearly a keystone in the pyramid of Honda’s extremely well respected brand. On the outside, the new Civic is a declaration of independence from the aesthetic drudgery of the outgoing model. Where the Civic previously seemed designed to make the Civic feel dashing, the new Civic is a more much more au currant with the subtly chiseled, but not intimidating good looks of someone’s dad on a TV sitcom. You know the face, but the name might not be in RAM. Except with Civic everyone knows it’s name since, well, the car is pretty much inescapable. What isn’t inescapable is the conclusion that the Civic’s a tad wider and adds to the wheelbase and width of the car— the backseat and the boot are improved by this revision, but you’d be forgiven for not noticing at first glance. And anyway, you’re more likely to be pondering the familiarity of the car, as it is firmly ensconced in the Honda design language, echoing the smoothing out and sprucing up of the mega-marque’s entire product line. Occupants will enjoy a modicum of spaciousness and premium comfort with improved headroom, legroom, shoulder clearance and side head clearance. Fit, finish and material quality throughout the cabin has been improved and soft touch materials are applied to the instrument panel, front door and door inserts and center armrests are padded. 56 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

I have spent a lot of time behind the wheel of several Honda models, including one rather scarce in our market: the CRV. What I love most about the CRV and similarly outfitted Honda›s is the simplicity of pairing Bluetooth with the infotainment system. I’m a bit of a podcast addict, and when I drive the CRV I simply hop in the car and whatever tunes or talk I was last enjoying resumes streaming from my phone, so it was great to finally put this feature to the test in the Civic, and it was great. In addition to Bluetooth, you get a 5 inch touch screen audio in the LXi and a 7 inch touchscreen audio in EXi and RS cars. All Civics get 60:40 fold down rear seats, rear seat armrest with cup holders, rear ventilation ducts, sun visor extension mechanism and map light. Convenience features include Remote Engine Starter which starts engine from a distance, ensuring favorable automatic climate control regulating cabin temperature ensuring maximum comfort before you get in. Smart Entry, Push Button Start also adds to comfort and sporty feel, Electric Parking Brake replaces hand lever with compact, easy to operate switch, the Automatic Brake Hold function eliminates the need to keep the foot on the break when at a hill or an intersection, Auto Day and Night Rear View Mirror, Walk Away Locking, Cruise Control, Electronic Power Steering and Rear Parking Sensors. The EXi and the RS grades in addition to sunroof has Honda Lanewatch eature which uses a camera located below the passenger side view mirror to display an expanded rear view of the passenger side roadway on the 7 inch touchscreen. Multi-Angle Rearview Camera that gives a look of three different viewing angles which can also be seen on the same 7 inch touchscreen. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 57

With the Civic you can choose either the LXi and EXi grades, powered by the new 2.0L DOHC inline-4 engine with i-VTEC engine producing a peak of 158 hp, 187 Nm torque. Or, the RS grade is powered by Turbocharged 1.5L DOHC, direct-injected inline-4 engine with variable Valve Timing Control, churning out 180 hp and a 220 Nm. Both engines are mated to a new generation Continously Variable Transmission. Civic›s new CVT has a taller final gear ratio for fuel-efficient low-rpm cruising, and new-generation G-Design shift logic for smooth acceleration and natural throttle response. The fuel efficiency of the LXi and EXi grades are at 18.8 KM/L and the RS grade is 20KM/L. Anyway, unless you’re a tuner, this car isn’t really about getting anywhere at break neck speed, as much is it is about having a car that’s always going to get you there. Seriously, your grandchildren can probably drive your Honda if they haven’t got the whole jet pack/teleporter thing down by then.

This new car is stiffer than it’s predecessor, and the electric steering is well articulated from top to bottom of the speedo, and generally reflects the fact that this much maligned (but ubiquitous) technology is generally improving. All told the new Civic hit the main marks for any redesign— it’s unequivocally better than its predecessor. That said the model occupies a prominent space in an extremely contentious segment. Will that change? Not overnight and not without a fight if the current model is any indicator.

rench cars - they’re as likely to confound as they are to delight. Founded in 1899 as Société Renault Frères by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand, Renault has done its share of each over more than a century of car manufacturing. Born of brother Louis’s engineering chops, and the business tutelage the Renault’s received working for the family textile firm, they were avid racers from the beginning, and at a steep cost— Marcel Renault perished in an accident during the 1903 Paris-Madrid race, after which his brother Louis never raced again. The ups and downs have continued ever since— at one point in 1984, Renault was hemorrhaging more than one billion francs a month. But for all their trials, this company always seems to come back stronger. With the Captur, Renault is intent on capturing a piece of the urban crossover market, and the French carmaker is taking three crucial steps to do it, by combining styling and driving position of a premium SUV, the interior space and modularity of an MPV, and the agility and driving enjoyment of a compact saloon. Sound like a tall order? We took the new Captur out on the road in Dubai to find out. The first thing you notice, approaching the Captur with fob in hand, is that it evinces a bold style that’s neither flashy, or ostentatious,

64 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

KN OW THE C AR

but still attractive to the eye. Its robust, statusenhancing look takes its inspiration from the original Captur concept. The lines of this new crossover are inviting and almost optimistic, while the forward position of its steeply-raked windscreen gives it a ready-to-run crouch. With raised ground clearance, large-diameter wheels and sill guards, the Captur appears ready for our region’s varied terrain. There’s no 4WD version on offer, but at the top of the range Renault does offer the Grip Xtend pack, with its traction control system designed to improve grip on slippery surfaces. Aesthetically, one of the Captur’s greatest strengths is its available two-tone color scheme which produces a lovely contrast between the roof and pillars and the rest of the body work, and to our mind represents the most pleasing iteration of the car. Despite its compact footprint, the Captur feels relatively accommodating inside, although long-legged passengers may wish to avoid the rear seats. Its well appointed cabin is warm and relaxing, and there are a number of inspired interior colour combinations on offer. With its high-up driving position, large boot, modular interior and sundry stowage solutions, the Captur ticks many of the boxes required by SUV drivers, without ever feeling too massive. Renault is making sure that the Captur offers plenty of modern features, including hands-

free entry, hill start assist and rear parking sensors. For a bit more, you can spec Renault R-Link touchscreen multimedia tablet, plus a system that comprises six loudspeakers, Bluetooth connectivity, audio-streaming and Arkamys hi-fi sound. With the range-topping Signature Nav model you get partial leather and, er, heated front seats for those chilly desert mornings. Based on the same platform as New Clio, the Captur builds on some of Renault’s best driving dynamics, from road holding to engine response and relatively agile handling. The car also offers best-in-class fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, starting from as low as 96g/km. The Turbo is smooth and almost noiseless, and pairs effortlessly with the dual clutch transmission, making it a more than decent daily driver. No, it’s not particularly sporty, doing the 100-0 dash in more than 10 seconds, but it does well at the pump, something more and more relevant here in the GCC. The Captur is a bold little crossover that has an appealing French flair sure to wow a certain segment of perspective buyers. Add in its overall capability and its excellent efficiency, and the Captur is well worth a look in its segment.

Do you know what the key differentiator of the SUV is these days? If you said off road capability, you’re too entrenched in our region because the actual main consumer concern, whether they know it or not, is the high riding platform and sense of safety that it imbues. Fitting then that lofty Castle Tabiano, our starting point in the Maserati Levante was first marshalled by the Romans who valued its strategic position atop the large plateau they called Tablanus. Tabiano is known to be one of the most significant defensive structures from feudal northern Emilia that still stands. So will the Levante be one the most significant SUV launches in recent memory? Only time will tell. 70 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

T

he Levante enters a crowded space in the market, which is another way of saying this is an area where luxury marques see opportunity. Which means that the Levante has to find a compelling niche. The Cayenne and X5 are already well established in the region, while the X6 is a blast to drive but lacks some of the storage space, The Jaguar F-Pace is certain rival, but it’s just as unproven in the market. At its core, the Levante is a basically all trident: the cabin layout, powertrain and chassis are based on the 4x4 Ghibli, while the suspension arms have been reimagined to accommodate additional travel, variable-height air springs, and adaptive dampers. Obviously, that means

72 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

the Levante will ride lowest at high speeds, dropping 35mm. The SUV also elevates for offroading so you don’t scratch it›s beautiful lower fascia etc. The boffins at Jeep contributed to fine tuning the Levante, and as a result you get hilldescent mode and an additional 40mm of lifted ride height when you select Off Road 2 mode. The Levante boasts the extensive use of lightweight materials, ideal 50-50% weight distribution and its lowest in class centre of gravity. Its aluminium “double wishbone - five link” suspension layout is comprised of standard Air Springs and electronically controlled Skyhook shock absorbers. It combines intelligent Q4 All-Wheel-Drive system and the newly introduced Torque

Vectoring system to tackle all sorts of driving condition. Under the hood it’s a regular Ferrari firebreather, with Maranello’s 430bhp twin-turbo V6 and a thoroughly operatic exhaust. At base, the Levante is good for 345hp— step up to the S and you’ll get 424hp compliments of crank and head revisions. Switch on Sport mode and the throttle response sharpens, the eightspeed ZF auto quickens its shift times while holding the rev band longer, and that robust exhaust note becomes even more sonorous. Select Sport 2 mode the suspension stiffens, but not so much that you won’t want to spend ample time with it. At its firmest damper setting the car still copes with the choppy stuff admirably.

that is by far the best interface Maserati has offered to date. There’s a new 360 cam, rear cross-traffic alerts, emergency brake warning and active braking, adaptive cruise and lane departure warning. During the drive, we gobbled up 60 uphill kilometres of one of Italy›s top hill climbs, with fast straights and tight bends, with the Levante acquitting itself nicely. This is where Alfieri Maserati won his class in a Diatto 20S with a 2,000 cc engine he had designed together with his brother Ernesto in 1923. We tackled the many switchbacks, curves and elevation changes under the steady tutelage of Alex Fiorio, the 1987 World Rally Championship

winner, who was always gracious with his insight and encouragement. And that’s a good way to think of the Levante— accomplished and powerful yes, but also insightful and encouraging. The car makes you feel connected to the road, and ready for anything. Castle Tabiano was built by the area›s most famous artists and leading craftsmen to decorate the private rooms and magnificent saloons with beautiful plasterwork, frescos and floors, and Maserati reckons the Levante is a modern masterpiece of similar craftsmanship. We don’t disagree, but the only way to find out for yourself is to drive one: beauty is, after all, in the eye of the key holder. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 77

Riding the Harley-Davidson Sportster in the South of France There’s much to recommend Marseille, southern France’s famous port city, an important immigration and trade hub that is centuries old. There are sleepy squares and meandering steps, busy 19th-century style boulevards and even open air markets that remind this Dubai resident of his beloved souqs. But mostly, and this is perhaps a minority opinion, I love Marseille immeasurably for simply not being Paris— this world traveller’s least favorite major metropolis, due to... je ne sais quoi.

Thundering out of the city and into the verdant countryside, I can just manage to see through the dense fog over the drag-style handlebars of my 2016 Harley Davidson Roadster, and that’s a strange thing because the bike’s diminutive steering rig is the opposite of the ape hangers Peter Fonda clung too in Easy Rider, which I suppose, makes me Dennis Hopper. Actually, I should save the Easy Rider references for a different bike (just couldn’t resist) as this impressive cruiser is represents a more modern iteration of Harley’s unmistakable design DNA, albeit of a somewhat minimalist, modern variety. “Since its introduction in 1957, the Harley-Davidson Sportster has proved capable of constant reinvention, and the Roadster writes a new chapter in that story,” said Harley-Davidson Director of Styling Brad Richards. “We’ve watched our customers take the Sportster in so many different directions. The Roadster is a mash-up of styling genres, but the intent was to build a rider’s motorcycle, a Sportster that’s lean and powerful and connects the rider to the road.” Today’s Roadster model augments the Dark Custom lineup with a minimalist design inspired by classic racing motorcycles and current trends in stripped-down, naked custom bikes and a profile reminiscent of racing Sportster motorcycles from the 1950s and 1960s. 82 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 83

“We wanted to give the Roadster some DNA from the high-performance KHR models of the mid-50s, and later Sportscasts tuned for the drag strip,” said Richards. “Those bikes had fenders cut to the struts, the small fuel tank, and were stripped to their bare essentials to achieve a singular performance purpose.” The bike’s thoroughly modern performance is supported by a combination of new wheels and tyres mated to premium suspension components and an air-cooled 1200cc V-Twin engine that delivers a strong pulse of mid-range torque. The 19-inch front and 18-inch rear Offset-Split 5-Spoke cast aluminum wheels were designed specifically for the Roadster and contribute to its balanced, athletic stance. “The wheels were inspired by classic laced wheels, and are the most intricate cast wheel we’ve ever created,” said Harley-Davidson Industrial Designer Ben McGinley. “The interlacing spokes shoot outward toward opposite sides of the wheel, creating a dramatic visual effect. These wheels are also very light for their size, which contributes to the Roadster’s handling performance.”

84 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

The Harley-Davidson Sportster has proved capable of constant reinvention, and the Roadster writes a new chapter in that story Harley improved the bike’s suspension with a new 43mm inverted single-cartridge forks with tri-rate springs, gripped in robust triple clamps and rear suspension featuring gas-charged emulsion coil- over shocks and tri-rate springs with adjustable preload and offers greater suspension travel than any other Sportster model – 4.5 inches in front and 3.2-inches in the rear. Outstanding stopping power is achieved with dual floating rotors on the front wheel. The Roadster is available with ABS brakes as standard. On the back of the bike you’ll find yourself tending toward a more aggressive posture with a new low-rise handlebar and mid- mount foot controls that center the rider’s weight over the classic profile of the 12.5litre Sportster fuel tank. In addition to the cool-guy riding stance it encourages, Sportster pilots will have their choice of several impressive colour palettes for maximum visual impact, including Vivid Black with a charcoal denim pinstripe; Black Denim with a red pinstripe; Velocity Red Sunglo with a red pinstripe; and two-tone Billet Silver/ Vivid Black with a burgundy pinstripe.

The Roadster’s stripped-down styling is complimented by clipping the the rear fender shorter than the previous bobbed Sportster fenders we’ve seen from Milwaukee. The slotted belt guard and muffler shields mimic the lightening holes drilled through race-bike components and a single four-inch diameter instrument tucked low in front of the triple clamp features a sweeping analog tachometer with an inset digital speedometer. Rear turn signals mounted directly to the fender struts, a new license plate and rear lighting module and fast-back seat design give the rear of the bike a tight and uncluttered look. “The seat’s profile flows into the very short rear fender,” said McGinley. “The cover features a series of pads inspired by an armored leather jacket, and the rear of the seat is designed as a passenger pillion, to give the Roadster added versatility.” As we reached our final destination I thought back on all the terrain we’d handled - we’d seen the best of this country on the back of the most iconic type of bike. adillac’s nautically themed design bent has an historical precedent: once upon a time its flagship luxury saloons really were proper American boats. With the advent of the CTS and ATS, particularly their performance driven V variants, it’s safe to say Caddy’s aren’t the sailing vessels they once were, but something closer to their European cousins in handling and performance. About that— behind the wheel the CT6 inspires confidence with a side of endorphin release. Handling is fast and intuitive with excellent steering precision— the active damping absorbs the nasty bits, helping you hold cleanly to a line. Both the 335-hp 3.6-liter V-6 and the all-new 404-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, offer palatable options, with the blown engine refreshing lack of turbo lag making it particularly appealing. Power is delivered to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission with flappy paddles if you want them “The CT6 is nothing less than an entirely new approach to premium luxury – and an approach only Cadillac can offer,” said Johan de Nysschen, president of Cadillac. “It is a bold endeavor with unmatched dynamism that reignites a passion for driving in large luxury vehicles. In short, it is prestige luxury reimagined.” Passengers will find themselves ensconced in the brand’s top tier expression of comfort, luxury and connectivity. Caddy claims the CT6 is among the world’s lightest and most agile full-size luxury performance sedans, with dimensions and spaciousness of a pair with BMW’s short-wheelbase 7-Series, while weight, agility and efficiency akin to the Cadillac CTS – which is itself lighter than 5-Series. In fact, the CT6 is lighter than the 5-Series, 6-Series, and E-Class. “We reinvented the approach to structural underpinnings in the quest to develop a unique formula for the prestige luxury performance sedan,” said de Nysschen. “Melding that new approach with the dynamics conveyed in our other award-winning rear-driven sedans – including V-Series – results in something that has been lost in the segment: the exhilaration of a true driver’s car.” With the new flagship CT6 needing to be as light, well mannered, and capable of aggression as its smaller siblings, Cadillac looked to NASA for inspiration: “This is the rocket science of automobile construction and manufacturing today,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen.

90 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

“With the CT6, we used high-strength aluminum and high-strength steels; lightweight chassis components; we integrate aluminum and steel where it makes sense; we eliminate every gram of mass possible, while achieving world-class performance.” All that focus on weight reduction helps improve fuel efficiency, while contributing to modern day sports/luxury driving dynamics. Keeping the kilos off also helps make the passenger cell more durable. By engineering the car so that 64% of the body structure is aluminium, including all exterior body panels –Caddy spared 90 kg over conventional steel fabrication. “The structure of the CT6 is one of the most-advanced body systems we’ve ever produced,” said Travis Hester, Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer. “The innovation surrounding our joining techniques have enabled us to create a vehicle structure with the highest torsional rigidity of any Cadillac while achieving one of the most mass-efficient vehicles in the segment.” In fact, Cadillac applied for 21 new patents in designing new material joining techniques that enabled engineers to design a completely new structure for the CT6. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 91

ROAD TR I P

ROAD TR IP

Its Omega architecture features 13 high-pressure aluminum castings in the body structure, creating a lighter, stiffer with “bank vault” levels of quietness. “This new construction approach has enabled us to produce a world-class vehicle that is larger in size and includes more standard equipment while achieving lower overall mass,” Hester said. This flagship Caddy is loaded with tech, including standard true 360-degree camera view around the vehicle, enhanced night vision to help identify people, large animals and more via heat signatures, a rear camera mirror, advanced park assist and a large 10.2-inch-diagonal CUE interface screen with 1280 x 720 HD resolution and console mounted touchpad.

This new CT6 isn’t just on par with the competition; it is in some ways better. The car has much of the light touch and precision of a CTS, while gaining enough next level finery to compete with A8 and S-Class. You can wring every last drop of fun out of the CT6, and that’s a huge compliment. Then, when the day is done, you have a luxury saloon to roll home in— not bad, eh? If there’s a downside at all, it’s that the car has both divisive looks and a lot of baggage as a marque. Caddy struggles to lure younger buyers in many markets, despite putting out what is arguably the greatest car in this segment. So ask yourself, do I care what other people think? Because the truth is, those other people probably wrong, unless they truly know what the CT6 has to offer. 92 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

M2 For You? We Test the BMW M2’s Mettle 94 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

Words | Tarek Hawchar

maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 95

ROAD TR I P

The car develops 365 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 343 lb-ft from 1,450 rpm. Mat the pedal pass the kickdown bracket and you get a boost of torque good for a total of 369 lb-ft, more than the outgoing M3 had on tap. All that push needs to be met with considerable grip, and the M2 gets model-specific Z-rated Michelin tyres35/265 out back, and 45/245 up front. The downside is that these shoes contribute a lot to road noise, but they’re also a big part of what makes the M2 feel so good on the road. According to BMW, the M2 can do the 100-0 run in 4.3 seconds thanks to the launch control function of its seven-speed DCT automatic transmission. The manual is just a few tenths of a second off that and, with its wide rev band, it’s a luddite’s dream. Well sort of, the revmatch feature makes heel-toe redundant, and as with all technological progress, somebody somewhere is likely angry about it. Not to worry, as that type of driver will be set against traction control and other assists - all of which can be deactivated along with rev matching for a purists track experience. BMW won’t let you disable ABS (a wise choice) but the combination of fixed calipers brakes with four-pistons in front, two in the rear on -15 inch and -14.5inch rotors respectively, affords ample stopping power. Also they’re blue with the M logo on the, so they look the business too.

T

he BMW M2 is a statement piece, a shot over the bow of motoring motormouths everywhere that announces Bimmer’s commitment to performance cars. Yes, some critics have questioned BMW’s performance chops of late, wondered if they’d lost their edge - although for us, cars like the X6 make it somewhat hard to understand that narrative. The car is a knot of motor racing genes wrapped in an exciting design and coupled with unlimited everyday usability. The low front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks with characteristic M gills, -19inch aluminium wheels in familiar M double-spoke design and low, wide rear with M-specific twin-tailpipe exhaust system all play impressive roles here. 96 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

The M-ness of the car is also easily identified in the cabin. The Alcantara of the door cards and centre console together with porous carbon fibre creates an ambience of rare quality and heady sporting ambition further underlined by blue contrast stitching and M embossing on selected details. Sports leather seats, an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever ensure BMW M2 drivers are in perfect command of their car at all times. Piloting the M2 around Dubai the car acquitted itself admirably, supplying the kind of M car prowess you’d expect, with chassis dynamics, engine performance, interior, and design worthy of the name. The first thing you really notice behind the wheel is the steering— it’s quite good. One feels connected to the

car and this version of electric assist power steering is one of the best we’ve tried. Actually, before you even have a chance to enjoy the M2’s steering feel, you’ll get to hear the sound of its N55 twin-scroll turbo -3.0liter inline-six, with its throaty exhaust note. Open the throttle and four tailpipes employ electronically controlled flaps to follow suit. The exterior sound is full on, but BMW weren’t quite happy with the cabin sound (windows up) so they use a mechanical diaphragm tuned to enhance desirable frequencies inside the car, relative to which Driving Dynamic Control setting you select. Therefore Comfort is sedate and polite, Sport is somewhere in the middle, and Sport+ gives you the full aural dose.

As stated, the nanny bits can all be shut off for track use and will only kick back in if things start looking very dire. The Active M electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential inspires confidence, allowing the driver to skirt the edge of his or her ability. Flick on Sport+ and turn DCT off, and the rear end is suddenly driftable. The automatic tranny is the fastest option here, and we found the paddles to be more attractive than the shifter for navigating the gears. Truth be told, in the heat of a hot lap it’s easier to focus on just driving the car, and letting it shift. That said, you can row your way to glory, or power through the kick-down bracket to call up a down shift when needed. The truth is this, unless you make your living on the track full time, you are extremely unlikely to overmatch this very capable, high performance coupé. If you like the track, but want something you’ll be quite at home in on the daily drive, this whip is worthy of consideration. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 97

All Up In The Club Our take on the new MINI Clubman Words | Tarek Hawchar

T

he MINI Clubman might not stake out a claim for “the ultimate driving machine,” but it certainly is a driver-centric car, and one that readily spirited driving in the bends. With minimal overhang, the MINI’s wheel at each corner design shares a certain British iconography with Range Rover, (while looking totally different) but also places each wheel squarely in the corner, giving the MINI the balance to attack the curves with dogged spirit. Form follows function, giving what some might see as a slightly quirky looking car the ability to turn heads with performance as well as personality.

98 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

This new Clubman represents MINI’s revised interpretation of the tradition-steeped shooting brake concept; powerful front section with inlets for Air Curtains; also side Air Breathers behind the front wheel arches for the first time in a MINI; dynamically stretched silhouette with four side doors and a shoulder contour that emphasises the car›s width; long roof line and fin antenna with red alarm system status light; steep rear with characteristic split doors, Clubman model inscription and integrated, horizontal lights - in other words, it’s all decked out.

maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 99

Inside the materials have a premium feel and the ergonomics are well thought out and engaging. I noticed that even the taller drivers in our cohort seemed to fit in the cockpit and, the Clubman’s rear seat legroom is one reason to consider it over it’s smaller sibs. That’s not unusual in this vehicle class and the level of adjustment offered to the front seats is quite robust. There’s also Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) included here, which is more or less an electronic limited slip differential. IF you’re feeling bold (preferably on a closed track with plenty of runoff) EDLC comes alive with MINI’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system disabled. With DSC off, the EDLC works overtime coming out of the corners, pitting your front brakes against the full might of 211 horsepower engine, and helping to mitigate torque steer, an inevitable side effect of combining front-wheel-drive with ample horsepower. It’s a nice compliment to the car’s laudable turn-in, copious grip, and a suspension that balances comfort and performance quite well. Or, if you want your MINI as stiff as possible, there’s an optional suspension upgrade available too.

The MINI Cooper S Clubman is a stylish, smallish, and mighty car that performs well and looks great (unless you›re in the minority of non-MINI fans). The car’s also not for the faint of heart or the light of wallet. Sure, it’s not an amount that will give the average Dubai professional fits, but it probably is enough to make you think, is this the car for me. That’s your call, but the good news is, if you do decide to take the plunge you’re sure to enjoy its rewards. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 103

The Contender The 911 GTS is a Force to be Reckoned With

P

laced somewhere between a GT3 and a Carrera S in the product mix, the various GTS models are among the purest expressions of the storied 911 on offer today. This equation begins with copious power delivered to the rear axle at the behest of Porsche’s Powerkit, which uses freer-flowing intake runners and higher-lifting valves that take the 3.8-liter flat six from 400 hp to 430 hp at 7,500 rpm. You feel it most up above 6,500 rpm where this naturally aspirated beast has a banshee scream and a berserker’s taste for adrenaline. In the GTS, torque peaks at 440 Nm, but 150 rpm higher than the S, at 5,750 rpm for a smoother torque curve. Available with either the excellent 7-speed manual or the lightening fast 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, the GTS can please luddites and tech heads alike; it just can›t help them to understand their personal differences. This car takes on public roads and racetrack alike with confidence and grace. The interior of the Targa is a riot of Alcantara and leather, but as luxurious as it is, I’m bereft to give up the driver’s position. Porsche has stitched the GTS logo into the headrests and plastered it across the tach to make sure you know what you’re driving, whichever way your head happens to be facing (we advise directing it towards the road at all times). Differentiating the GTS outside you’ve got a different take on the way the car presents front and rear, and a set of Bi-Xenon headlights that work with Porsche’s Dynamic Lighting System to show you the way home, even adjusting for optimal illumination as you make your way around a bend.

You will need to be a little more vigilant around sleeping policemen and poorly built parking garage

ramps (I’m looking at you Jumeirah Town Centre), as the GTS is lower than the S, riding on 20 inchers. GTS models are differentiated by the Carrera 4’s wider rear track (36 millimetres more hip to love) but with standard PASM adaptive shocks and the Sport Chrono package with its active engine mounts, rounded out by the same capable suspension and brake hardware found in the Carrera S. You also get the centre-locking 20-inch multi-spoke wheels from the GT3 and the Turbo S for a little taste of the rarefied stuff. An electronically deployed rear spoiler adds downforce on demand, keeping that silky 911 silhouette during less frenzied driving conditions. The PDK equipped GTS handles the 0-100kph sprint in just 4 seconds, and red lines north of 7,800 RPM and there’s plenty of torque in the mid-to-high rev range make passing slower traffic a rather brief, and satisfying process. You could take the car out of Sport+, but out here in the mountains it seems pointless except for when I’m stuck behind a big truck waiting for an opening to overtake. PDK keeps me in the right gear at all times, rev-matching during downshifts as I brake hard (and briefly) into a turn. The car changes gears with a satisfying thunk, but it’s never overbearing. Open the throttle in a straight and then let full off and the exhaust will burble and snarl— good times. Behind the wheel, I’m grinning like mad and flapping at the paddle shifters as I see fit, basing my shifts on the sound of the motor more than anything else, as it’s tough to even glance at the gauges meaningfully when you›re driving at the full extent of your abilities. Ask any racer how fast they were going on a hot lap and they’ll refer you to whatever ballistics package they’re using as they themselves have only a vague idea— the only number that matters is lap time and that won›t benefit from ogling the speedo. But really, in all likelihood simply letting PDK shift would actually improve my performance— I don›t have the numbers to prove it, but I can tell you this is most certainly true. For one thing, I was short shifting a tad, as the 7,500 RPM (or so) whine of the GTS can seem a little wrong until you get used to it. It just sounds crazy, which had me shifting too soon on my own. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 107

So i tried leaving the transmission in full auto, and it did not disappoint. The car ploughs through the gears in the straightaway with buttery precision, exploiting every last bit of torque right up to redline with far more nerve than I had managed on the paddles. In the corners, slalom, and wide arcing turns, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), combined with Porsche Stability Management, apply braking discriminately helping keep the car stable and agile while you run your heart out. The GTS is perhaps a tad less forgiving than the S in this regard, but that’s by design, as this car is meant to hold true to the tail happy tradition that is classic 911. According to Porsche, PTV improves the vehicle’s handling “by means of modulated braking 108 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

interventions on the inside rear wheel when being driven in a highly dynamic style. [When] entering a corner… braking force is selectively applied to the inside rear wheel as the steering manoeuvre is begun. This imparts a greater drive torque to the outside rear wheel compared with the inside wheel.” It’s a nice trick and one that pays dividends both on the track and on the open road. All in all, the 911 GTS is a finely honed sports car that trades on an impressive legacy and iterative improvement that makes 911 a benchmark in any serious sports car dialogue. Whether you need the GTS, are would be more at home in a Carrera S is a personal matter, and a financial one. The good news is, you won’t regret a moment you spend comparing the two. maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY maqinaonline.com | 2016 JUNE / JULY 109109

hat happens when you mix a dash of Detroit swagger with a level of luxury, power and styling designed to do battle with the Europeans? The Chrysler 300 SRT, that’s what. Granted, Chrysler is arguably, Europe adjacent since the Italians took over, at least spiritually - one can almost smell the espresso from the driver’s seat. Equally at home in the driveway of a hip-hop superstar and a board room baller, the redesigned 300 is even more drool worthy in it’s SRT edition. At the heart of this well mannered beast is the same seen in the mighty Hellcat, a 6.4-litre HEMI V8 that produces 470hp and 637Nm of torque here. The engine’s high torque output allows for drag strip starts and copious straight-line power, while performance-tuned motor mounts improve idle stability and ride control across the board. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing provides both maximum low-end torque and optimised high-end power. The 300 SRT also includes an active valve exhaust system that allows for standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wider rpm range, meaning extra urban consumption is improved to 8.6L/100km.

This is the first time this car has seen the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, and it’s an excellent addition. The design of the transmission further contributes to efficiency - at 88kg, it weighs just 1.8kg more than the previous five-speed gearbox. The top end gear ratios are paired closely for for smoother shifting, continuous torque, and efficient cruising at highway speed. With this new tranny, the car gets a new toy— a new launch control system that allows the driver to personalise performance options including the desired launch rpm, as well as track-ready timing functions including a 400-metre sprint log, kinda like Pole Position back in the arcade days, albeit real. 112 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

Flick on Sport mode and drop the hammer and the car takes on a performance-first mandate by activating sport-tuned steering calibration and paddle-shift mode, in addition to sport engine and transmission calibration, and increased responsiveness of the accelerator pedal calibration. Engaging Sport - by switching the rotary shifter to ‘S’ - provides lightning-quick gear changes, reducing shift times by 37% (250 milliseconds versus 400 milliseconds) holding each gear longer for max. torque and acceleration in the wavvy bits. The standard adaptive damping suspension (ADS) system is linked to the vehicle’s drive modes and offers three fully customisable settings - Default, Sport and Track. Switching modes allows the 300 SRT to offer a compliant and comfortable ride on the street, yet can easily be switched to handle on-track conditions. Default mode (which could use a better name) you get a good, all around daily driver starting point. The car isn’t enraged at all times,

114 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

but you can get there in a hurry with a hot foot. In “Sport” mode, the car stiffens up a tad and then “Track” mode, gives you the highest damping rates combined with a performance shifting and gear holding features that let you wring the most out of the V8. Add to that, the car is the most stable, composed 300 SRT to date, thanks in part to the all-new EPS system, which transmits precise road feel and improves on-centre tracking, steering noise and fuel consumption. The EPS system applies variable steering effort to different driving conditions. EPS analyses steering angle, vehicle speed, engine rpm and chassis control systems 13 times per second for a precise performance-handling feel. For track or performance driving, the EPS changes when Sport or Track mode is activated to give the steering character greater feel and feedback.

“THE 650S CLEARLY ADVANCES THE MCLAREN LINE UP, SIGNALLING THE ONGOING EVOLUTION OF THE MARQUE’S DISTINCTIVE DESIGN DNA”

120 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

t wasn’t that long ago that McLaren seemed occupied with a lot of things, none of which amounted to producing their own line of rarefied vehicles. With the 650S joining the ranks of the 12C and P1, the Woking based carmaker has perhaps the highest hype-to-models ratio of any automotive manufacturer. But then, hype is probably the wrong word, since McLaren has earned that attention through their remarkable cars. So we were chuffed when the opportunity came to test drive the car around Qatar for our show (Starting October). Often it seems like carmakers hold back certain iterations of a vehicle just to keep their name in the press longer, rolling out small variation over time. Not so the 650S—McLaren explains that the carbon fibre monocoque design allows the coupé and the Spider to be very nearly the same car, making a simultaneous roll out the obvious choice. I’m not privy to the coupé versus Spider ratio in their current orders, but McLaren have a backlog of around 6 months (maybe more by the time you read this) on 650S orders, so it appears to have been a sound choice. Anyway, the Spider does its spidery business quite efficiently, with the hardtop tucking away neatly in under 20 seconds, at speeds up to 30kph. And while you’re sure to find some anonymous YouTube commentator stating obvious falsehoods on the subject (because really, when isn’t that true?) the new car is more than a 12C makeover. Instead this new whip shares a few parts from the 12C and the P1, comingled to create something novel… and awesome. If you head over to McLaren’s website, right now, you’ll see the 12C listed among their current production cars. 12C production is, for the moment, on hold to make way for the new 650S, but McLaren makes it clear in their literature, presentations, and, er, intimidating body

I

language, that the 650S is not a direct replacement for the 12C. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter as the 650S clearly advances the McLaren line up, signalling the ongoing evolution of the marque’s distinctive design DNA. The 650S is a tad harder, perhaps more mercenary looking beast, but smooth enough to house some latter day Crockett or Tubbs. That said the 650S looks a bit more down to earth, leaving plenty of room for the sculptural mastery of the P1 to remain top dog. Actually I suspect that, if you rotated the P12 ninety degrees and blew it up to skyscraper size it would make a perfect addition to Dubai’s futuristic skyline. The 650S has a slightly more “Doha” vibe, and I mean that as a compliment to both cars. It’s a bit like fashion I suppose— the P1 is like a couture garment, something that is clearly high concept, while the 650S is off the rack, but at the kind of store where you need an appointment (and maybe an Amex black card) to shop. The 650S is an exceedingly complex machine— in order for McLaren to cover every last detail at the presentation I

Absolute power requires absolute stopping power, so they’ve also tuned up the 12C’s airbrake system, giving the rear end more grab when you need it. Shifting is quicker too, due to a software upgrade that improves the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox’s smoothness and overall performance. The V8 sounds better than ever when you toggle on sport mode, roaring to life thanks to some spectacled laptop jockey somewhere (this last bit is pure speculation). Whoever wrote the code; the improved sound is down to a bit of ECU wizardry that tells the engine to cut two cylinders for 30 milliseconds on up shifts. Out front, a new splitter adds down force, giving the car a keen nose for the business of driving fast, and reactively out on the track. The F1 inspired blades on the doors harness that air from the splitter, combining with other improvements to give the car nearly 25 percent more down force, making it one planted apparatus. In Track mode, a feature dubbed “inertia

of Pirelli’s unparalleled P Zero tyres, you can begin to see that a great deal of thought went into this ride, from head to toe. Actually, remember that number, because despite all the technical enhancements to the 650S, the car weighs just 1,330kg, compared to the 12C’s 1,336kg, keeping the car lithe and responsive. The 650S takes all that McLaren has learned in producing the P1 and 12C, encrusts a few more LEDs in there, and renders a car that is speedier, more inhabitable for regular driving, and more user friendly. Not bad, eh? I should also mention that it’s quite expert friendly so, you know, if you have a few F1 titles under your belt don’t let that deter you. Yes, the 650S loves the track, and really, so do I (despite a conspicuous lack of F1 titles). Pick up off the line in the 650S will leave your jaw in your lap, just as any car in this category should. It’s also extremely smooth and stable in a way that reminded me of my time in the Veyron SS. Cornering is

“PICK UP OFF THE LINE IN THE 650S WILL LEAVE YOUR JAW IN YOUR LAP, JUST AS ANY CAR IN THIS CATEGORY SHOULD.” push” is available at engine speeds above 5000 rpm, realising kinetic energy from the overlapping clutches on up shifts. It sounds like the title of a Christopher Nolan movie, but Inertia Push is actually a clever way to maintain engine speed between shifts, which helps contribute to the 650S’s impressive 3.0 second 0-100kph time. As always, weight loss was an imperative in making the 650S all it could be, and the team at McLaren was pleased to shave 6kg from the wheels. Shod in a bespoke iteration 122 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com

The car is, naturally, quite adept at track days but there’s plenty of mojo there to translate out on the ring road or whatever desolate haunt fuels your driving fancy. The twin-turbo, dry-sump V8 is even tempered, albeit particularly fierce in temperament, and we didn’t detect any appreciable turbo lag. Rated at 641bhp @ 7,250rpm and 678Nm @ 6,000rpm, the 650S looks as good on paper as it does on the road (and it feels even better than that). The car’s exhaust note is a tad restrained, but its top speed isn’t— the 650S maxes out at 333kph. The car’s carbon-fibre monocoque design is both ultra-light weight and almost psychically bonded to the rest of the car, which means that you can become almost scarily connected to the car’s handling and, more importantly, it’s limits. Now, lest that concern you overly, I promise that most of us aren’t meant to get anywhere near the limit with this car (see my earlier proviso about F1 titles). Flick on Normal driving mode and the 650S settles right down for the Spinney’s run, getting you about town with about as much ease as one could ask for. Sure, there’s not much room to store said groceries (might need to forego a passenger if you want a twelve pack of the big Rayyan waters) but the back and forth will be simple enough. McLaren drivers, it turns out, actually use these things more than you might think, and a lot of hard work has gone into making the 650S a pleasing daily driver. Of course, it is rather hard to see out the back of the thing, but happily a backup camera is available, which is fantastic because we’re loath to see one of these beauties with a dinged tail. If you’ve spent time in the 12C, the 650S will afford you a very familiar experience from the driver’s position, with the controls laid out similarly. The interior is rife with

“FLICK ON NORMAL DRIVING MODE AND THE 650S SETTLES RIGHT DOWN FOR THE SPINNEY’S RUN, GETTING YOU ABOUT TOWN WITH ABOUT AS MUCH EASE AS ONE COULD ASK FOR.” carbon fibre accents and technology, including standard IRIS sat-nav system with Bluetooth telephony, DAB digital radio, wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control. The poet in me is particularly glad to see voice control here— the 650S is a car that talks to you out on the track, helping you find that ideal line and hold to it, so it’s only fitting that you should be able to talk to it as well. For a few more bucks you can add P1 inspired fixed-back carbon racing seats, and even more carbon fibre. Long live the 650S, which is lighter, faster, and better tuned than its predecessor— which is saying a lot of you’ve driven a 12C. McLaren sets the bar high every time they go to the drawing board and the result is that their cars get better and better. Never mind the trolls out there wondering what percentage of different the 650S is compared to the 12C, because at this level of the game improvement comes in small increments, pushing the fine art of motoring a few cm at a time. DASHBOARD

DASHING: MARKED BY UP-TO-DATENESS IN DRESS AND MANNERS by Dr.Marie Abou Rached

Introduction and Handshake What would be your feeling if someone shakes your hand without looking at your eyes? How about when someone crushes your hands or barely touches your fingers while introducing himself, what do you feel? Keep in mind that the first impression cannot be repeated. Therefore, we have to train ourselves how to walk, stand, introduce ourselves and shake hands until these skills become a habit. The eye is a window to the soul, but a handshake is the only physical contact to have with others so we have to get it right. I would like to introduce to you the following techniques that if practiced, it will be incorporated in your daily life. The first key of a successful introduction is a positive approach which starts with walking up, having a poise that reflects a high self-confidence, and respect for yourself and others. Moreover, extending the right hand, and looking to the person in the eye with a gentle smile are essential acts that positively impact a hand shake. A proper handshake •Stand up straight (don’t lean on anything, as you will lose more than 80% of your credibility). Your feet should be almost eight inches apart, with one foot marginally in front of the other one. •Your body should be fully facing the other person by having your shoulders in a parallel position. Avoid a position where the torso or the toes are not facing the other person, this will send a silent message that you want to get away. •Keeping a distance of 3 feet between you and the other person will let him feel comfortable and respected. Being so close will invade the other’s personal space. Furthermore, being so far gives an impression that you don’t want to get close or to interact. •Straighten your arm in the direction of the other person with the thumb pointing up. The hands have to connect “web to web”. The connection has to be comfortable and followed by three up-and-down pumps. •If the other person doesn’t respond to your handshake, simply lower your hand calmly, keep the eye contact and keep talking to him. •In case there is a barrier that separate you from the other person (desk, counter, etc.) it’s recommended to come around for the handshake. •A fundamental act while shaking hands is to look direct to the other’s eyes. Making an eye contact shows very high self-confidence and respect to others. (Elude staring at other’s eyes, let the eye contact be gentle and quick).

DA S H B OA R D

THE EYE IS A WINDOW TO THE SOUL BUT A HANDSHAKE IS THE ONLY PHYSICAL CONTACT TO HAVE WITH OTHERS SO WE HAVE TO GET IT RIGHT

This sort of handshake is used to show flagrant power and superiority. This way is aggressive and it is improper in board meetings and formal handshakes. If you face such type of handshake, it’s advisable to correct it by moving a three-inch step to the left and take your hand back to the vertical and balanced position.

Don’ts Don’t snatch your hand away if the others person’s hand is sweaty. Don’t pull your hand before that the other person does, it will let him feel unwelcomed. Don’t shake hands while sitting. Don’t lean across a barrier to handshake.

The double handshake or “the hand hug” The two hands are used in this sort of handshake. It’s when you do a traditional handshake and then you place your left hand on top of the 2 hands. Another way would be by placing your left hand so that covers the person’s right hand. A double handshake indicates sympathy with someone and it expresses warmness, trustworthiness and friendliness. Usually it is used between politicians or it is used to convey condolence.

Tips -Keep hands dry before shaking hands. In case your hands tend to sweat, it’s preferable to use antiperspirant powder or spray, and keep a handkerchief in your pocket.

The limp fish (dead fish) It’s a lifeless and indifferent handshake. It lets the other person feel as if there are no bones. This type of handshake designates a weak, passive and reticent person. If someone uses a limp fish handshake with you, it’s recommended to push your hand closer and to grasp the other person’s hand firmly to create a better connection. The first bump: it’s an informal type of handshake. It is used between friends as congratulatory sign.

In business field - In business arena, introducing people is according to their ranks. - Start the introduction by the person of the highest importance and rank. - The people with higher position have to extend their hands first. In case they don’t offer their hands, you can take the initiative. - The customer or the visitor has to be introduced first to the boss or to workmates. - In case introducing people from equivalent rank, it’s recommended to start with the older person. -Indicate clearly the person’s name with his title and few other information that can help to start a conversation between people.

•Make your handshake vital by smiling. The smile will comfort the other person in the condition of not doing it. •It’s very important to maintain eye contact with people while talking to them. Looking around will show lack of interest and disrespect. •Introduce yourself by mentioning the name of the other person first, and then say clearly your name, your family name and your title (alongside). Types of handshakes The bone crusher it’s when you squash and crush the other person’s hand. The bone crusher is an intimidating, uncomfortable way to shake hands. Uncertain and anxious people that want to give the impression of domination and power use this type of handshaking. The queen shake It’s when the palms of the hands don’t meet. The tips of the fingers barely touch each other. This sort of handshake let the other person feel uncomfortable and inferior. Habitually, this type is used between people of a higher order (a queen) and their subordinates. The wrestler: It’s when you try to make your hand on top by turning the other person’s hand. 126 JUNE / JULY 2016 | maqinaonline.com
