Dear Reader, In this edition of Maqina Magazine, we kick things off with a review of Genesis’ brand-new G90. Does the Korean limousine have what it takes to rival the likes of Merc’s S-Class and BMW’s 7-Series? Read on to find out. We also take three Ferraris on a little road trip in Dubai, discovering their differences and similarities along the way. The star in this edition however, is Land Rover’s new Discovery. We reviewed the HSE trim on extremely harsh terrain in Qatar, as well as on road. Last but by no means least, we sat down and had a chat with Charly Dagher, General Manager of Alfardan Sports Motors. The subject? Maserati’s excellent Levante SUV. We think you’ll really love that one. We sure know we did.

AAB Lexus unveils all-new
LC Luxury Coupe to open a new chapter in brand history
12 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
NEWS
T
he emotional designs and high-performance models issued by Lexus in the last few years prefaced a new chapter for the brand, one that begins now with the arrival of the all-new 2018 Lexus LC flagship performance coupe. Available now in Lexus dealerships across the GCC and Levant, the LC combines stunning design, scintillating performance, long-distance comfort and premium craftsmanship to join an elite group of international grand touring coupes. The Lexus LC is a powerful, emotionally stirring realization of the vision of Lexus master driver Akio Toyoda for a flagship production coupe that echoes the spirit of the hand-built Lexus LFA supercar and delivers the visual impact of the Lexus LF-LC concept. Koji Sato, Chief Engineer of the Lexus LC, said: “While maximizing the fundamental taste of the LF-LC, we applied completely different specifications to create a design that goes beyond the concept – a design that will captivate you as soon as you see it. In my view, pursuing beautiful design and elaborating superior performance are two very similar aspects. Beauty is the identity of Lexus’ design. Every feature of the LC is the result of an integrated approach to design and engineering. The entire team has worked together, including engineers and designers, to create such a great car.” “The all-new Lexus LC is a flagship coupe which represents the evolution of Lexus as a lifestyle brand that will surprise and delight customers. The car symbolizes the beginning of a new phase for Lexus, which is all about creating greater synergy between engineering and design,” said Takayuki Yoshitsugu, Chief Representative of Middle East and North Africa Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation. “The LC makes the strongest statement yet about the brand’s future direction, and is the result of painstaking craftsmanship, attention to detail and an advanced, future-oriented approach to engineering. It’s a car that offers a pleasurable driving experience which enhances the user’s lifestyle.” Yoshitsugu added, “We are grateful to our customers in the GCC and Levant for their constant support and encouragement for our efforts to push the boundaries of automobile design and engineering, thus inspiring us to strive harder in creating ‘ever-better cars’. And we are confident the strong emotional appeal of the all-new Lexus LC will strike a chord with audiences in the region.” Provocative, elegant and purely Lexus Based on the groundbreaking design of the LF-LC concept car which was shown at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, the Lexus LC debuted as a production model at the 2016 edition of NAIAS.

NEWS
Turning the LF-LC concept into a production model while remaining faithful to its visual excitement required nothing less than a new development process, combining design and engineering disciplines as never before at Lexus. The production LC preserves the concept’s adventurous appearance, and the design itself helped achieve performance targets, especially with regard to the low center of gravity, aerodynamics and high-speed stability. Just like its concept predecessor, which won the EyesOn Design award for Concept Car in 2012, the production LC is also a trophy winner, having claimed two awards at the 2016 EyesOn Design Awards–in the Production Car and Interior Design categories. Emotional design that reinforces the Lexus identity Tadao Mori, Chief Designer of the Lexus LC, said: “This was one of the first times for Lexus that designers were closely involved in the dynamic engineering development, so we could understand the driving goals and support them with the car’s design. The 2012 LF-LC concept model was the starting point, not our final goal. This means we didn’t just duplicate LF-LC’s surfaces and lines onto the production platform. Even though we decided to maintain LF-LC’s design language and theme, we added more emotion. I’d like to thank very much all the colleagues who were involved in the car’s development at Lexus International.” Immediately identifiable as a Lexus thanks to its hallmark spindle

grille and dynamic character lines, the 2018 LC represents the most passionate expression of the brand’s design direction. The grille itself features a unique mesh texture that changes visual tension as it spreads across the front of the car. Independent L-shaped daytime running lights beneath new ultra-compact triple LED headlamps create the distinctive LC front lighting signature. The combination of a large glass panel and blacked-out rear pillars creates a floating roof appearance, and chrome-plated moldings along the edges, which echo the lines of a traditional Japanese sword, amplify the effect. The body’s substantial, “planted” look stems from prominent quarter panels that flare away from the center of the car and door panels that are pulled inward. The flowing lines maintain a consistent tension in the body panels through to the rear, where very slim tail lamps use mirrors to create a three-dimensional sequence of L-shaped graphics. The sweeping roofline tapers rearward between muscular, sloping fender tops, underscoring the car’s wide and stable stance, and the Lexus spindle shape is repeated in the rear fascia. Large ducts feed air into the rear wheel arches, the airstream exiting smoothly across the tire sidewall to bolster straight-line stability and steering responsiveness. The all-new Lexus LC is available in eleven vibrant colors including a newly-developed Naples Yellow Contrast Layering, which accentuates the car’s sportiness with the realization of a high intensity yellow for the exterior panels.

High-output V8 with sound and fury Powered by a high-performance V8 engine, the all-new Lexus LC 500 exhales through the variable Active Exhaust upon startup, with the 5-liter naturally aspirated V8 issuing a clarion call to driving enthusiasts. The LC 500 can sprint from zero to 100 km in less than 4.7 seconds. It’s a well-proven performance engine, with a low-mass reciprocating assembly using lightweight forged connecting rods, along with titanium intake and exhaust valves to allow a 7,300-rpm redline. The 32-valve cylinder heads, equipped with performance-tuned VVT-iE (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent by electric motor), take full advantage of the engine’s low internal friction and aggressive valvetrain specs. The D-4S injection system uses direct fuel injection that allows a high compression ratio augmented by port fuel injectors to enhance low-speed response. Under acceleration, the LC 500 reveals its character in a continuously rising power curve, with the 471 hp developed at 7,100 rpm and the torque peak of 55.0 kg-m at 4,800 rpm. The fast-revving V8 issues a stunning soundtrack amplified by a special resonance tube connecting the intake to the firewall, plus a standard Active Exhaust that rumbles and roars like a high-performance GT should. Lexus considers the sound of the engine to be an important
contributor to delivering a genuinely multi-sensory driving pleasure. And in the new LC 500, the company has taken great steps to achieve truly emotional engine sound, where Lexus engineers have worked to combine the sounds produced both by the air intake system at the front and the exhaust system at the rear to create what they describe as a “concert hall” effect inside the cabin, both as the car gains speed and slows down. The sound has been developed specifically for the LC, to reflect the coupe’s specific performance qualities. The driver can adjust the natural exhaust sound level via the Drive Mode Select system. The Lexus LC debuts the first 10-speed automatic transmission for a luxury automobile. Smaller and lighter than some 8-speed units, this new transmission executes shifts at speeds rivaling dual-clutch transmissions, yet with the seamless performance and smoothness of a torque converter automatic. The LC allows manual shifting via magnesium paddles. Even drivers who pride themselves on making expertly timed shifts, however, will find the advanced electronic control system– which anticipates the driver’s inputs by monitoring acceleration, braking and lateral-g forces – always chooses the ideal ratio. Torque converter lock-up engages in all ranges except when starting off to provide a direct feel and also aid fuel efficiency.

NEWS
The Drive Mode Select feature provides integrated control of multiple systems, offering enhanced driving pleasure by allowing the driver to select drive modes suitable for the situation, or to match their preferred driving style. In addition to the five drive modes set in advance, a Custom Mode has been provided, enabling the user to freely combine each mode. SPORT S+ extracts the most from the powertrain and transmission shifts and also fully opens the baffles in the Active Exhaust under acceleration. The V8 is a good citizen, too, switching to the Atkinson cycle to enhance fuel efficiency at cruising speeds and Otto cycle for higher performance levels when accelerating, thus providing the perfect mix of power and efficiency. The next-generation hybrid Lexus, which introduced the world’s first luxury hybrid 13 years ago, developed a new Multi Stage Hybrid System specifically for the LC 500h. Like other Lexus hybrid configurations, the Multi Stage Hybrid System teams the gasoline engine with two electric motors/generators, but similarities end there. The Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine uses D-4S direct fuel injection, and lightweight valvetrain components allow a 6,600-rpm redline, with Dual VVT-i ensuring ample torque across the engine speed range. The Multi Stage Hybrid System is a world’s first construction that combines the Lexus hybrid system with variable gears.
16 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
By controlling the output of both the higher rpm 3.5-liter V6 engine and the electric motor, it achieves powerful performance from low speeds through to high range driving. In addition, operating points were selected for high system efficiency from low through to high speeds and the sphere of Electric Vehicle (EV) performance has been enlarged. Altogether, these helped to deliver an emotive driving experience, superior fuel efficiency, and comfortable cruising. The Multi Stage Hybrid System also allows for more electric assist at lower vehicle speeds, and it enables the LC 500h to operate with the gasoline engine off at speeds of up to 140 km/h. The combined system output is 354 hp, yet that figure does not fully indicate the LC 500h’s performance potential. The LC uses an advanced Driver’s Mind Index (DMI) control to understand the driver’s intentions which helps to optimize gear selection. The power generated from the engine and the motor is rapidly and accurately sent to the tires, providing for a high-performance engine rpm and acceleration in accordance with the driver’s intentions. When driving along winding roads, the car changes to a lower gear, and proceeds to actively downshift when braking. On the other hand, during more challenging sports driving, the battery provides additional output so as to achieve a greater torque sensation, thus providing an emotional driving experience that will change the way hybrids have been perceived.
NEWS
Thanks to the Multi Stage Hybrid System’s design, the driver is also able to take advantage of an M mode to select and hold gears manually, using paddle shifts mounted behind the steering wheel. The coordinated control of the Power Split Device and the gear shifting mechanism ensures the gear shift will start instantaneously with the computer receiving the signal from the paddle shift, giving an exceptionally quick response.
driver inputs and the road surface, yielding more precise steering response with better initial effort. The LC driver will feel the effectiveness of the suspension design in the immediate response at initial turn-in, controlled body motion and precise, linear response that create a rhythmical and smooth driving experience. The LC’s electric power steering (EPS) gives a natural feel, while yielding high handling precision.
Chief Engineer Koji Sato explained: “In the past, people only associated hybrid with ‘eco’. We wanted to broaden that perception and create a true high-performance powertrain.”
The LC exhibits razor-sharp reflexes, exceptional handling balance and rock-solid stability. Rock solid could also describe the stiffest unibody Lexus has ever produced. The strategic use of lightweight, high-strength steels yields a structure that is resistant to twisting forces. The combination of high-strength steels, aluminum and CFRP, along with deleting a spare tire in favor of run-flat tires and moving the 12v battery to the trunk area, helps yield 52:48 weight distribution (LC 500h). The LC engineers followed an ‘inertia spec’ to locate as much mass as possible toward the center and lower in the chassis to improve the center of gravity. The low center of gravity also enabled Lexus to reduce the LC’s roll angle without making the suspension too stiff, which would hurt ride comfort.
The LC is the first Lexus hybrid to use a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. The battery pack fits neatly between the rear seats and the luggage compartment and has a high-power density, with its 84 cells producing 310.8 volts. A chassis with sports car moves Built on the new Lexus Global Architecture – Luxury (GA-L) platform, the LC harmonizes driving performance, design and craftsmanship in unprecedented ways to achieve a new sense of ingenuity. Achieving sports car handling with a high degree of ride comfort, while maintaining the low hood height, was a particularly demanding challenge. The solution was a double ball joint front suspension that allows for control of the smallest movements from
The increased lateral stiffness of the run-flat tires complements the LC’s highly rigid suspension, while reduced vertical stiffness aids ride comfort. The high-performance braking system employs 6-piston front brake calipers and 4-piston rear calipers. The LC is available with 21-inch forged alloy wheels that offer a lightweight design, black-and-chrome coating and a polished finish.

To produce the optional carbon fiber roof with its twill weave effect, Lexus employs a new, high-speed resin transfer molding process, developed at the Motomachi factory from a technique originally used in the production of the LFA supercar. Another new technique is used for combining aluminum with steel to help save weight in key areas, notably the front suspension towers. A new benchmark for GT cabins The dynamic luxury theme of the exterior is carried through into the LC’s cabin, which brings together elegance, quality and sophistication with a driver-focused cockpit. The ideal grand touring coupe cabin must strike a balance between function and comfort, sporting intent and luxury. The Lexus LC hits that note with an intuitive layout and an optimal seating position that set the stage for spirited driving. The design places the driver’s hip point as close as possible to the car’s center of gravity, where feedback from the car is the most communicative to the driver. The low instrument panel position, together with the low hood line and narrow A pillars, give the low-seated driver a commanding view of the road. All driving controls are easy to reach without altering one’s posture. Lexus positioned the information displays at the same height, to reduce the degree of eye movement required to read them. The instrument binnacle houses the latest version of the TFT display technology introduced in the Lexus LFA supercar, including a moving central ring. Comfort and luxury are no less thorough. The LC’s exclusive seats feel as good as they look, with a new two-part construction technique where the main part of the seatback drapes over the shoulder area and then wraps around the seatback. Bolsters in the shoulder area help hold the driver securely in cornering maneuvers, and the optional sports seats feature even more substantial bolsters. The steering wheel cross section changes around its circumference to allow for variations in grip and twisting of the wrist, and large, substantial feeling magnesium alloy paddle shifters are easily hooked by the fingertips. The front passenger has not been ignored; the side of the center console rises to form an integrated grab handle. With function, there is also beauty and impeccable craftsmanship. The flowing lines of the door panels serve as an extension of an exterior
18 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
line that flows from the hood and through the windshield to build a sense of continuity between the exterior and interior. The Lexus LC comes in four distinctive interior color schemes that include new Breezy Blue and Ochre, together with Dark Rose and Black seen in other Lexus models. The quality and finish of the upholstery, trim materials and detailing reflect the Takumi craftsmanship and fine attention to detail for which Lexus is renowned. It can be seen and felt in the hand stitching of the leather-wrapped gearshift lever and the draping treatment of the Alcantara door panel trim, among numerous other details. The Lexus LC cockpit artfully integrates the brand’s latest audio, navigation and connectivity technologies, making them easily accessible. The new Lexus multimedia package combines an inviting graphic user interface with software that enables future enhancements, and the center console features the latest-generation Remote Touch Interface touchpad control, with quick and intuitive operation. As thrilling as the LC sounds from the outside, Lexus also ensured that sounds inside the cabin would delight those with a fine ear for musical detail. Lexus has enjoyed an auto industry-exclusive partnership with Mark Levinson since 2001, giving its customers the benefit of bespoke audio systems of the highest quality in its vehicles. The new LC follows in this tradition, offering Mark Levinson audio systems with exclusive equipment from their topof-the-range Reference Product. The 13-speaker audio system uses innovative technologies to deliver concert hall quality sound. The LC’s Mark Levinson audio system also features Clari-Fi music restoration technology that enhances music playback by automatically analyzing and improving the quality of all types of compressed, digitized music sources.
NEWS
It identifies music signals that have been compressed and restores them in real time during playback to achieve an accurate and full listening experience. Comprehensive suite of safety technologies Both versions of the LC are equipped as standard with Lexus Safety System+, an array of active safety features that can help the driver avoid an accident, or help lessen the consequences of a collision. The system uses a camera and millimeter-wave radar to monitor the road ahead for potential hazards and collision risks. The package includes advanced driver assistance functions such as Pre-Crash System (PCS), a combination of collision detection and collision preparation systems; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control System (DRCC), which supplements the conventional system with a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode that helps maintain a suitable distance from the preceding vehicle; Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA), which uses a camera sensor located in the upper windshield area to detect lane markings while driving and then provides the driver with information and steering assistance in accordance with road and driving conditions; and Automatic High Beam (AHB), which detects nearby light sources such as the headlights or tail lights of vehicles ahead and automatically switches between high beams and low beams to ensure optimum nighttime visibility.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system, designed to help prevent potential danger in parking situations; Blind Spot Monitor, which detects and warns the driver of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes; Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), which helps prevent side skids and also to stabilize the vehicle while turning on a curve; as well as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
Other safety features on the LC include Lexus Parking Assist (LPA), which makes use of a sensor to notify the driver by display and buzzer of the approximate distance between the vehicle and an obstacle;

ALFARDAN SPORTS MOTORS INSPIRE YOUTH TO DRIVE RESPONSIBLY WITH UNIQUE SAFETY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
A
lfardan Sports Motors, the official dealer of Ferrari and Maserati in Qatar, launched a first-of-its-kind safety drive across schools in Qatar to raise awareness on the perils of speeding. Revered for their lineage of the world’s fastest cars, the two iconic automotive brands reaffirmed their commitment to safety by spearheading a pioneering initiative that aims to foster a culture of responsible driving among the nation’s youth. The safety drive kicked-off at the Global Academy International where representatives hosted a comprehensive interactive session in which they presented thought-provoking facts and figures on the rising occurrences of traffic incidents. According to the annual statistics shared by Qatar’s Traffic Department, speeding was reported as the key cause of road deaths in 2016 with an average of 4564 violations per day. Despite celebrating the passion for speed on the racetrack for years, students were encouraged to place safety above thrill when on the road – at all times. Another major issue highlighted by the campaign was the dangerous trend of distracted driving and its fatal repercussions. Citing data from the Traffic Department, the dealership informed a tech-savvy audience that 80% of accidents were caused by mobile phone usage. In fact, smartphones topped the list of common driving distractions, which included eating, or drinking, adjusting radio or temperature controls, other vehicle occupants as well as driving on autopilot. In an effort to instil road discipline among the youth, students were briefed on the importance of street signs in addition to the benefits of wearing a seatbelt. In a study conducted by Curtin University in 2012, 57.3% of young drivers in Qatar chose not to buckle up while driving. About 46.2% respondents stated discomfort as the primary reason to avoid seatbelts, while others lacked confidence in its
ability to save lives. Dismissing this misconception, the dealership revealed to students that seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45% and risk of serious injury by 50%, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Commenting on the launch of the safety drive, Charly Dagher, General Manager of Ferrari and Maserati Qatar at Alfardan Sports Motors, said: “Ferrari and Maserati have for long held an illustrious racing heritage. Though speed is part of their sporty DNA, both brands have continuously strived to achieve the highest standards of safety as part of their unparalleled automotive excellence.” He added: “Given the alarming rate of traffic incidents in Qatar, we believe it was necessary to bring about a change, especially among the young generation. The youth are most susceptible to reckless driving and we hope to turn them into disciplined drivers. Through our campaign, we aim to reach out to as many schools in the country and demonstrate to young students the true meaning of responsible driving that we, as a brand, strongly support.” On her part, Mrs Issmat Munir El Sheikh, Principal of Global Academy International, said: “Safety is one of the key lessons that we impart to our students on a daily basis. We are proud to be part of this unique initiative by Alfardan Sports Motors. It’s beneficial for our children to understand about the importance of road safety at a young age, and what’s even better is that they learn it from their favourite car brands.” The safety drive was initiated in line with the 33rd GCC Traffic Safety Week. Alfardan Sports Motors is committed to delivering a world-class brand experience by inspiring customers to follow road safety practices.

SKYLINE AUTOMOTIVE SET TO TRANSFORM AUTO MARKET IN QATAR WITH LAUNCH OF IONIQ Next-generation eco-friendly vehicle is a clear highlight from opening day of the Qatar Motor Show
S
kyline Automotive – the official distribution partner of the Hyundai Motor Company in Qatar – made a strong debut at this year’s Motor Show by unveiling one of the undoubted highlights of the first day.
Speaking to reporters and VIPs at the Qatar Motor Show, General Manager Paiman El Malla introduced the ground-breaking IONIQ – the next-generation in eco-friendly vehicles – to Qatar. IONIQ is an innovative, industry-leading hybrid that is the first car in the world to offer separate hybrid, full electric and plug in hybrid powertrains within one body type. It has been making waves around the world since its global launch last year, and has collected a slew of the industry’s most coveted awards. The IONIQ Hybrid has unseated the previous fuel-efficiency record holder in its class, surpassing the Toyota Prius Eco by 2 miles per gallon (mpg) to boast the best fuel mileage of any non-plug-in vehicle.
48 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
NEWS
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S rated the IONIQ Hybrid at 58 mpg in combined city and highway driving, which translates into 4.1 liters per 100km. Based on the extent of the reaction at the motor show and the positive response from visitors and motor enthusiasts alike, Skyline Automotive expects robust demand for the hybrid version of the car, which it will begin selling to customers from May of this year. “Our enthusiasm for bringing the IONIQ to Qatar is part of our goal to offer customers a diverse product range to meet their individual needs and expectations, which are evolving to include environmentally-friendly options for mobility. Automotive enthusiasts’ pursuit of greater fuel efficiency has created a strong global market for eco-friendly vehicles that meet drivers’ everyday needs, Qatar notwithstanding. That’s why more options are needed to help make responsible choices easier for consumers,” said Paiman El Malla, General Manager of Skyline Automotive. He added, “The IONIQ is also the first major step towards our mission to support the development of Qatar on an economic, social and environmental level. We believe there is enormous potential and desire from people and businesses in Qatar to reduce their environmental footprint and we hope to help them make that choice with the IONIQ.” IONIQ combines advanced features, beautiful design, smart technology and a driving experience that’s responsive and rewarding. Its robust and lightweight body combined with highperformance components have been specially designed and engineered to work perfectly with each other. Key features that define the car include: • Performance. The compact electric motor works with the specifically calibrated 1.6 GDi petrol engine to improve fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions to an estimated 79 g/km. The petrol engine, together with a 32kW electric motor, delivers a combined 103.6kW of power and up to 265Nm of torque and a top speed of 185 km/h. The electric motor recharges on the go, working together with the dual-clutch transmission to deliver smooth and responsive automatic gear changes with the use of low-viscosity transmission oil. • Driving experience. A class leading 0.24 coefficient of drag allows for a highly aerodynamic performance. A number of noise reduction measures and the use of aluminum and other unconventional materials in the body reduce vehicle weight, deliver excellent ride quality and a quiet and comfortable driving experience. • Impeccable design, inside and out. The visual identity of the IONIQ was inspired by a future where responsible mobility is part of everyday life, leading to a futuristic look and feel that fits people’s everyday lives. The IONIQ’s interior layout offers a clutter-free, intuitive design, using eco-friendly materials such as volcanic stone, soybean oil and sugar cane, which add a clean and sleek visual appearance to the design.
• Infotainment and connectivity. The driver-focused layout is spacious and logical. To suit the varied needs and lifestyles of motorists, the IONIQ Hybrid is equipped with a high-definition 7-inch information cluster with an outstanding resolution. It displays all gauge functions, which automatically bring up the most useful information depending on the selected drive mode. The IONIQ is also infinitely interconnected, allowing users to integrate their smartphone with its infotainment system by providing both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto®. IONIQ even offers a wireless charging pad. • Safety features. The IONIQ is equipped with the latest in active and passive safety technology, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, as well as seven airbags and a highly rigid body structure. The IONIQ Hybrid is one of nine cars presented by Skyline Automotive at the Qatar Motor Show and includes other awardwinning vehicles in a range of sizes. Skyline Automotive’s presence at the show highlights the business’ commitment to presenting a product range that is ideally suited to Qatar as well as delivering Hyundai’s vision of continuously improving fuel-efficiency and environmental performance. The E-Class Coupé marks a new step in the evolution of the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy by fusing the charm and technological superiority of the sedan with a sportier and sleeker profile. With its flawless proportions, the new Coupé exhibits a puristic, surface-accentuated design with reduced lines and sensual forms. The vehicle’s coupé design is characterised by a distinctive front end with low-positioned sports grille and central star, a long bonnet with powerdomes, a rearward-shifted, squat greenhouse and a muscular rear end. Alternatively, the new E-Class Coupé can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension, including all-round roll/pitch/ heave stabilisation. It is able to warn the driver of an imminent collision, provide optimum support with emergency braking and, if necessary, also autonomously apply the brakes. In addition to slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing in the danger zone ahead of the vehicle.
Other highlights include DRIVE PILOT: this system represents Mercedes-Benz’s next step along the road to autonomous driving. As Distance Pilot DISTRONIC, it is not only able to keep the car at the correct distance behind vehicles in front on all types of road, but, for the first time, it can also automatically follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h.

egular readers of Maqina magazine might remember the Genesis G80 we drove in the last issue. Although it was Genesis’ first attempt of making their own car, they simply nailed it. We couldn’t get enough it, praising it every step of the way. The G90 is that car’s big brother, the flagship full-size luxury limousine if you will. Question is, can it actually compete with Europe and Japan’s finest? To find out, we took one for a test drive.
Introduction
In all seriousness though, the G90 is a bit of a looker when it comes to styling. The front end is completely Right, let’s start with the name. Genesis, if you’re bespoke. We really like the large single-piece grille. unfamiliar with the name, is a sub-brand of Hyundai. It complements the car’s elegance and simplicity, as Notice we said sub-brand, not a subdivision. So it doesn’t leave room for smaller vents and what not don’t think of it as AMG or BMW’s M, but rather as to clutter up the entire front fascia. IMPLEMENT THE SAME DESIGN IN THE NEXT FIVE MODELS THEY PLAN ON INTRODUCING BY THE END OF 2019
”
Visually, the larger G90 is as good, if not better, than the G80. Genesis’ new design language called “Athletic Elegance” suits the long limousine much better than it did the midsize sedan, and that’s saying something. The guys over at Genesis say they’ll implement the same design in the next five models they plan on introducing by the end of 2019. If this is what future Genesis cars will look like, sign us up.
76 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
From a 3/4 view, it’s obvious the G90 is a large car. You expect the roof to start sloping down just behind the front doors, but it doesn’t. It extends all the way to the back of the rear doors before it starts to come down again. It reminds one of the S-Class, with that same swooping motion right after the cabin ends. To be honest, it looks even better with the G90’s front end than it does with the futuristic fascia of the S-Class. The rear taillights look similar to those found on the S-Class as well, but there’s a kink to them at the top of the lens that’s missing on the Merc. They also extend a lot more into the rear quarter panels. Overall, we really liked it.

CAR REVIEW
Interior Here’s where the Genesis starts getting into its own. If someone was to tell me that a Hyundai sub-brand called Genesis would be competing with the S-Class, i would have laughed hysterically. And yet here we are. The S-Class is always one step ahead when it comes to technology and innovation, even compared to the likes of Audi and BMW, but the Genesis managed to reel it in and go head-to-head with it. The cabin is completely-brand new. Forget the old Equus sedan, this thing is on a whole new level. Everything you touch and everything you see reeks of quality. Italian leather, Nappa leather, wood trim accents in the rear, contrast stitching, polished aluminum inserts… you name it. The list goes on and on. There’s a ton of legroom and headroom in the back. If you want to have a no-hassle journey, just hire a personal chauffeur and bask in the sumptuous comfort and luxury that is the second row. It’s 95 percent there compared to the S-Class, a remarkable feat given how good the grand old Merc is. Hyundai has invested a ton of research into reducing noise, vibration and harshness. The G90 uses special sound-absorbing materials, laminated glass for individual windows and optimized suspension tuned for high-speed cruising. It sounds cool and fancy on paper, but it’s even more impressive in the real world. There’s no noise as you speed up, apart from the engine’s muted revs. Cruising at 80 km/h feels no different to cruising at 160 km/h.
78 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
If you like to travel over long distances for an extended period of time, and do so frequently, the G90 is the perfect vehicle for you. It’ll leave you rested and relaxed even after an 8-hour stint in the driver’s seat.
Engine and Performance The base turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 in the G90 makes 365 hp and 509 Nm of torque. It’s more than capable of moving the relatively large car around, but if you’re after performance, only the bigger 5.0-liter V8 will satisfy. With 420 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque it doesn’t hang around. The new eight-speed automatic is smooth and fast, so the G90 will have no issues posting a respectable low 6 second time in the sprint to 62 mph. Although it’s rear-wheel driven in standard guise, you can specify it with the new H-TRAC AWD system. It provides additional security as well as mega traction in the wet. It’s still rear-wheel biased as the system only sends up to 40 percent of available torque to the front, but it’s an awesome feature to have if you live in a colder environment where it rains and snows often. The chassis is sorted and neutral, if not a little bit numb. The plus side is that you genuinely can’t feel a thing. Bumps and large holes in the road are practically nonexistent with the G90, you almost never have to worry about them. Some body roll is present, but not much more than one would expect from something so big and so heavy. As a highspeed, long-distance cruiser, it’s neigh-on perfect.
CAR REVIEW
Conclusion It’s a genuine S-Class rival at un-S-Class like prices. If you don’t mind the Genesis name, we can’t see any reason why you’d spend more money on something which is just fractionally better than it.

DISCOVERY HIGH OFF-ROAD PERFORMANCE & TERRAIN CAPABILITIES

hen someone mentions Land Rover, most people first think of the Range Rover or the Evoque. Some will remember that they debuted a brand-new model called the Velar, but very few will actually think of the Discovery. And that really confuses us. We recently got a chance to drive the new Discovery on some harsh terrain in Qatar, and as you’re about to read, it should actually be high on the priority list of most potential Land Rover buyers.
maqinaonline.com / ISSUE 8 81
C OV ER STO RY
Introduction The fifth-gen Discovery made its official debut back in 2016, at the Paris International Auto Show. Although it was still undeniably a Discovery, Land Rover had thoroughly reworked the interior and a large portion of the exterior as well. The V6 engine and the eightspeed auto are the only two components carried over from the last Disco with minor modifications. Everything else is either brand new or massively tweaked. The biggest change is the new aluminum-intensive unibody design in favor of the old-school ladder frame and steel-body construction. The switch to the more modern layout resulted in weight savings of just over 450KG (1,000 pounds). Needless to say, this improved both performance and efficiency massively. The example we drove was of the HSE-spec variety. It’s a step above the base S and SE, with larger 20inch 5-split alloy wheels, an Atlas silver grille, power sunroof with tilt/slide features, a powered gesture tailgate and LED headlights with the signature LED strips.
82 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
C OV E R STO RY
HSE stands for High Specifications Equipment, so our Disco was practically equipped with almost everything Land Rover can cram into it. The only way to make it more unique is to go for the First Edition model, which boasts several styling upgrades to make it stand out.
Exterior It’s immediately apparent the new Discovery is, well, new. The squared off, boxy look of the last-gen model is gone for good. The new Disco borrows most of its styling cues from the larger Range Rover and now even the Velar. The body lines are a lot smoother and the entire design just sort of ‘flows’. Land Rover nailed the proportions right on the head. It manages to look modern and sophisticated but still pay tribute to the original 1989 Discovery thanks to that stepped roof at the back as well as the offset rear license plate. There’s not a lot to talk about up front. It gets the Range Rover’s headlights as well as the front grille, albeit they’ve been scaled down to fit the smaller Discovery. The side profile shows how truly gorgeous the Discovery’s proportions are. Although the doors have a massive surface area, the black rocker panels break up the monotony beautifully.
You’ll notice the C-pillar boasts a somewhat weird design, but that’s to add more rigidity into the chassis. We like the clear lenses out back, especially since the narrow taillights complement the tall silhouette nicely. Lastly, you’ll be pleased to know that the tailgate still offers the same split-design as the one on the old car. It makes loading cargo easier, but gives you somewhere to sit as well.
Interior If you thought the cabin took on from the larger Range Rover, wait until you see the interior. Unless you have the two SUVs side by side, you’ll have a hard time telling one apart from the other. There’s less space in the Discovery, but not by a lot. Headroom is the same, and so is legroom. The only thing which seems to suffer is width, but it’s not an issue at all. In fact, it’s barely noticeable. Being a large seven-seater, you’d expect to find massive comfort in the second and third row seats. And you do. We wouldn’t recommend you place full-sized adults in the rear-most row, but for shorter journeys it isn’t an issue. That being said, the second row is spoiled in terms of comfort and luxury. There are a total of nine USB ports and six 12-volt power outlets in the cabin.

Technologically, the Discovery is up there with the Range Rover. The massive 10-inch touchscreen is operated by the InControl infotainment system. It’s fast and intuitive, probably the best system on the market at the moment. It offers 3G Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity and nav. Land Rover is even kind enough to provide you with something called an Activity Key wristband as well. Think of it as a remote key incorporated into the waterproof wristband. This means you don’t have to wear the bulky keys and fill up your pockets or worry about soaking them up in water.
Engine and Performance The Discovery HSE comes with one engine option alone. It’s the well-known 3.0-liter Si6 petrol unit, and it really suits the character of the SUV. With 340 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque it’s more than plenty powerful for the light Disco. The sprint to 100 km/h is dealt with in 7.1 second and it will top out at 215 km/h. Let’s be real though, no one cares about that in a Land Rover. What we care about is off-road performance and terrain capabilities. Luckily, that’s where the Discovery really comes into its own. The Terrain Response 2 system boasts computerized control over the sophisticated 4WD system, maximizing the already impressive off-road capabilities. The system offers five settings: Normal, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock. Leaving it in Auto is ideal, as we found the computer always knows what to do and it never gets the mode wrong. It comes with downhill descent control and low-range gears as well. In its tallest setting, the Discovery boasts impressive 28cm of ground clearance and fording (wading) capabilities in water up to 90cm deep.
Conclusion If you want a full-size SUV capable of seating seven comfortably, you’d have to really hate Land Rover to avoid getting the new Discovery. It’s more capable than you can imagine, and because it’s lost a lot of weight now, it’s a lot more efficient as well. The updated interior makes it a great daily driver too. We’d highly recommend it to anyone.

etting to drive a Ferrari is not something many people get to do very often. Even getting to sit in one is extremely rare. Getting to drive three of them over the span of three subsequent days however, is a once in a lifetime thing. And that’s exactly what we got when Ferrari rang us up and asked if we’d like to test drive their latest models over the course of three days. Before the representative on the other end of the phone was even done asking, I had already said yes so excited that my voice changed pitch.

THE FIRST DAY STARTED RATHER ORDINARILY WITH EVERYTHING IN ORDER, BUT THINGS QUICKLY ESCALATED FROM THERE. GET UP, GET READY, HAVE BREAKFAST, AND GO DRIVE A FERRARI. IF ALL DAYS STARTED LIKE THIS, THERE WOULDN’T BE A SINGLE UNHAPPY PERSON IN THE WORLD.
90 ISSUE 8 / maqinaonline.com
For the first portion of the experience, i was served the keys to the 488 GTB. Although i’ve driven the car before, on several occasions, this was the first time i had the car all to myself for the entire duration of the day. To start things off, i took it inside the city to find out what it’s like when it has to deal with normal, everyday situations. Right off the bat, i can report that the car is nothing short of marvelous. For such an aggressive looking thing, you’d expect it to crash on every bump and have a ride as firm as a Formula 1 car. The truth couldn’t be any further from that however. Put the suspension in its softest setting and it becomes a completely different animal. It’s docile, manageable and relaxed. It’s weird saying this, but it feels like a GT car with emphasis on sport. It’s no harder to drive than an everyday sedan or a small city compact. You get decent visibility and the steering is light. You know where each of the car’s corners is so the thing feels small and compact.
ROA D T R I P
Here’s the thing however. Even though the 488 felt relaxed and quite soft, it never lost its specialness and that Ferrari character. You were always just a squeeze of the throttle away from ending up at ridiculous speed. On the busy city streets, it felt like an overpowered go-kart with a thing for comfort. Then i took it to Zayed road, the longest stretch of tarmac in the Emirates. Needless to say the 488’s 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 felt tremendously powerful there. With 670 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque, you genuinely get the feeling that you can never explore the car’s entire limits unless you’re on the race track. It can accelerate to 100 km/h in well under 3 seconds, and the speed limit comes up so fast that you can’t go full throttle almost anywhere. By the time you squeeze the thing wide open you glance down and realize you’re travelling at ridiculous speeds. Thankfully, it has the massive, oversized carbon brakes to match. As a road car, it’s on another level to anything Lambo or McLaren makes at the moment.

For day two i got the chance to drive the 488 Spider. Needless to say, it did not disappoint in the slightest. To start at the begging however, we have to talk a little about the place we drove it in. We thought long and hard where a car such as the convertible 488 Spider would suit the most, and the answer in the end was pretty obvious: the USA. Now, of course, we couldn’t take it to the USA, but we did bring the USA to us. Namely, we took it to Last Exit, a unique Food Truck Park which is the first of its kind, especially in this region.
IF DAY 1 WAS ALL ABOUT DRIVING AND EXPERIENCING THE CAR ALONE, DAY 2 WAS MORE ABOUT TAKING IT ALL IN AND ENJOYING THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE.
Sunny skies, great food and scenery reminiscent of the vast openness of the deserts in the U.S. If ever there was a place invented for the 488 Spider, this was surely it. Unlike the GTB however, i didn’t care as much about the power or the torque since it didn’t really matter. The spider offers an experience like no other. The fact that it still has the GTB’s power output with the most glorious V8 soundtrack is just a bonus, not the necessity.

The last day proved to be the cherry on top of the cake. Many people discredited the original FF for breaking the ‘Ferrari rules’, claiming it could never be a true-blooded stallion since it was all-wheel drive. I’d dare anyone to drive the V12 GTC4Lusso and claim the same. This car, like it or not, is on a whole new performance level. The 488 is fast because it’s a supercar, but it’s fast when conditions allow it. You have to know what you’re doing and the weather has to be perfect. Rain makes you fight the TC in fourth gear and turning off the system is only recommended if you’re a racing driver or don’t know what fear of death is. The GTC4Lusso is not like that however. The AWD system gives mega grip in all conditions, come rain or shine. Rather worryingly, it can press on in the wet just as much as it can in the dry. It’s disconcerting a bit, because your mind can’t cope with the level of performance on offer even when conditions are not perfect. Because it’s a rear-wheel drive biased system however, it has no trouble pulling off massive drifts if you really want it to. In fact, in the dry, it feels no different to drive than any other big sports car, despite the fact it’s actually a grand tourer. The engine in the car we tested was the 6.3-liter V12 found in the last FF as well as the F12, here making 690 horsepower and 697 Nm of torque. The 488s did feel sharper and less compromised, but if you plan on taking the car on longdistance trips, it has to be the GTC4Lusso all the way.

Summary You really can’t find faults in any of them. Ferrari has the market on lockdown at the moment. Each new model somehow manages to trump the old one, despite us, the reviewers, saying it possibly can’t. Which one should you buy if you’re in the market for a Ferrari? Well, if you want the ultimate super car experience, the 488 GTB. It’s a no brainer. If you want the looks and open-top motoring, go for the Spider. If on the other hand, you want to use your Ferrari every single day, rain or shine, and want the incredible traction it offers, you can’t go wrong with the GTC4Lusso.

R
ecently, Maqina had a chance to talk to Charly Dagher, the General manager of Alfardan Sports Motors – the official importer of Maserati in Qatar.
We asked him a few questions about the Levante SUV from Maserati and he was more than happy to answer them all.
Q: What does “Levante” mean? A: The Levante name was inspired by a warm, Mediterranean wind that can change from mild to gale force in an instant, mirroring the character of the first Maserati SUV.
Q: Being the Maserati of SUVs, what are the main pillars that were considered when designing the Levante? A: The Levante is based on the evolution of the sedan platform, designed exclusively by Maserati. The car chassis has been specifically developed to offer unique on-road drivability and competitive off-road capability, with day-today comfort and practicality. The top notch Italian SUV was conceived around three main pillars: Design, Exclusivity and Performance. It represents the optimum blend of these three elements in the SUV world. The Levante’s design is distinctive and attractive, embracing the most valuable aesthetic elements of Italian style. A central asset, its design brings a new concept to the SUV world, combining spaciousness and coupé lines while achieving the best aerodynamic efficiency in its segment with a Cx coefficient of just 0.31. Its exclusivity stems from technical features like Air Suspension and the Q4 AWD system, which come as standard equipment, and the high level of customization that includes two cutting-edge packages, Sport and Luxury. The result is a driving experience that is as unique as the Maserati brand and its customers. The thoroughbred on-road handling typical of all Maserati cars and solid off-road capabilities, as demanded in the SUV segment, describe the car’s overall dynamic. The Levante is here to excite any sports car driver counting on performanceoriented features, such as the extensive use of lightweight materials, ideal 50-50% weight distribution and its lowest in class center of gravity while encompassing features that deliver unparalleled agility in the luxury SUV class.

INTERVIEW
Q: The Maserati Levante comprises four driving modes; can you explain to us each mode? A: The four driving modes which are: Normal, Off-road, Sport and the Increased Control & Efficiency are designed to simplify and make the Levante driving experience more exciting. Normal Mode The default mode provides a standard setup to the pedal response, the turbo boost and the exhaust. The driver can choose between two different suspension levels: “normal”, which provides 207 mm minimum ground clearance or Aero 1 (-20 mm). The suspension set-up is the best compromise between sport and comfort damping. Sport Mode / increased suspension stiffness The “Sport” mode highlights the car’s sportier and more dynamic character: the gas pedal is more responsive, the engine mapping provides maximum over-boost throughout the range and the exhaust system opens completely, emanating a loud and deep guttural sound. In Sport mode the driver can keep the default suspension level or lower it to Aero 1. The MSP has a specific sport set-up that allows the driver to exploit the car’s on-road potential to the full. In the sport mode torque vectoring is active as well.

When the driver clicks the “Sport” button twice, the selected mode not only calibrates the engine and transmission but also increases the suspension stiffness, giving the car better handling characteristics and switching the suspension height level to Aero 1 (-20 mm). On the screen, the air suspension image turns green along with other components. The driver can modify the height of the car, from “Aero 1” to “normal”, whilst maintaining sport mode and sport suspension damping. Off-Road Mode The off-road suspension mode can be selected using the appropriate button or from the rocker control. In this case, the ride height increases by 25 mm (off-road 1), the Skyhook system response changes and thanks to the ESP control, it can detect specific situations. The driver can raise the car by a further 15 mm (off-road 2), some 40 mm higher than in the default mode. The resulting ground clearance reaches the outstanding figure of 247 mm. The Increased Control & Efficiency (I.C.E.) Mode The Increased Control & Efficiency mode is designed for improved fuel economy, relaxed driving and low grip conditions. The transmission is set to automatic only and provides the most gentle gear changes possible. The Air Suspension setting is the same as in “normal” mode. The gas pedal mapping is set to comfort mode and all engine parameters contribute to decreasing CO2 emissions

and minimising fuel consumption. No over-boost is available and the exhaust bypass is closed up to 5,000 rpm.
“Saetta” logo, first seen on the archetypal Quattroporte in 1963, and seamlessly follows the shape of the side windows.
Q: In your opinion, what are the significant design features of the Levante that makes it distinctive and attractive among other models?
The side profile is defined by a swaged line that runs the entire length of the car. It departs from the signature side vents at the front and fades over the rear wing, defining its muscular shape and emphasizing its underlying strength.
A: Exterior Design: The imposing grille is inspired by the sensational Alfieri concept and is destined to be a signature feature of all Maserati cars from now on. The Levante is immediately recognisable as a genuine Maserati, even from a distance. The muscular shape of the rear shoulders gives it a distinctive and attractive Italian style. The signature concave grille pays homage to historical Maserati models like the Tipo 60 Birdcage. It is accentuated by the flow of the front wings, which emphasize the shape of the engine compartment lid and run into the headlight surrounds at the front. The particularly effective headlights featuring Bi-Xenon and LED technology then converge with the Trident symbol at the centre of the grille. The silhouette of the Levante moves from its feline-inspired headlights along the side of the car to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, resulting in a coupé look that is enhanced by the frameless doors, a feature of every modern Maserati. The rear pillar is refined by the insertion of the characteristic
The profile view is completed by a wide choice of alloy wheels, lightweight and sporty and coherent with the Maserati design language, with the Trident design neatly integrated into the spokes. Interior Design: The whole interior is characterised by horizontal tension lines, highlighted by real material elements to create a feeling of absolute harmony between the front and rear passenger compartments. The interior of the Levante feels like a first class lounge thanks to the standard leather seats. It can be further enhanced with the optional dual-colour leather and, in line with a long Maserati tradition, customers can personalise the interior according to their individual taste. A total of 28 interior colour combinations are available at launch. The dashboard and the central console are redesigned in order to accommodate the 8.4” Touch Screen, the cluster of drive mode buttons, the brand new rotary knob and the air suspension switch.

The instrument panel follows the classic Ghibli/Quattroporte layout and is backlit with white light that contrasts nicely with the warm cabin lighting. The classic Maserati analogue clock is located in the centre of the dashboard. It features a blue background dial with white backlighting. The interior finish is in aluminium with a chrome surround for the Levante with 350 hp and the high gloss Erable trim is the standard for the Levante S. In terms of interior roominess, the car is definitely towards the top of its class. The rear seats comfortably accommodate three passengers thanks to the long wheelbase and the wide body. The two outer seats are designed to offer maximum comfort and lateral restraint. The headroom is among the best in class thanks to the ergonomic configuration of the seats.
Q: Can you mention to us some of the driver assistance systems of the Levante? A: Maserati introduces a full range of advanced driver assistance systems for the Levante, ensuring an absorbing driving experience with the highest levels of safety. • Hill Holder • Hill Descent Control • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go • Blind Spot Alert • Lane Departure Warning • Forward Collision Warning • Rear View & Surround View Camera • Park assist Hill Holder The standard Hill Holder system uses the on-board sensors to detect the vehicle’s angle when parked facing uphill and keeps the braking pressure for a few seconds so that the driver has enough time to release the brake pedal and accelerate before the car rolls backwards. Hill Descent Control Hill Descent Control (HDC), which also comes as a standard, allows a smooth and controlled hill descent on snow or rough terrain without the driver needing to touch the brake pedal.
When activated, ACC constantly monitors the space between the Levante and the vehicle ahead, maintaining a safe pre-set distance. If the traffic slows or another vehicle moves in front, it slows the car down by making it coast or by engaging the brakes. Conversely, when the vehicle ahead speeds up or moves into another lane, the system accelerates up to the pre-set speed.
When activated via the dedicated button on the steering wheel, the vehicle will descend using the ABS to control each wheel’s speed. If the vehicle accelerates with no intervention from the driver, the system will automatically apply the brakes to slow down to the desired speed that can be set up using the Cruise Control buttons.
The ACC uses a radar sensor, located on the front grille and a frontlooking camera behind the internal rear-view mirror to detect the presence of a vehicle ahead. If the ACC is automatically braking, the stoplights go on as if the driver is braking.
By applying pressure to the accelerator or the brake pedal the driver can instantly override the HDC system.
Thanks to the integrated Stop & Go function, the car will adjust to the target vehicle’s speed until it comes to a complete stop and will depart automatically within 2 seconds.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go The Levante is equipped with a cruise control system as standard. The optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated Stop & Go function further increases comfort and safety when driving on main roads and motorways.

Blind Spot Alert The Blind Spot Alert (BSA) is also included in the Levante’s wide range of standard equipment. It monitors detection zones on both sides of the car at speeds above 10 km/h and alerts the driver when a vehicle enters the blind spot zones.
INTERVIEW
The (BSA) uses two radar sensors, located inside the rear bumper, to detect vehicles that enter the blind spot zones from the rear, the front or from the side of the car. It monitors approximately one lane (3.3 m) on both sides. In the event of danger it activates a warning triangle in the appropriate exterior mirror and reacts with an audible warning if the driver uses the turn indicator to change lane. The integrated Rear Cross Path (RCP) function aids the driver when backing out of parking spaces where vision of oncoming vehicles may be impaired or blocked. The RCP system uses sensors on either side of the rear bumper and detects any vehicles or people approaching from either side at speeds from 1-3 km/h to a maximum of 16 km/h. The RCP alert is both visual and audible.
chime warn the driver that the vehicle is veering out of its lane. When the indicators are activated no warning is given. The system uses the same front looking camera in the rear-view mirror used by the AFS lighting system. The LDW can be deactivated from the Maserati Touch Control Plus and is reactivated automatically every time the engine restarts. The system works at speeds above 70 km/h. Forward Collision Warning
Lane Departure Warning
The optional Forward Collision Warning (FCW) monitors vehicles ahead by means of a camera and warns the driver via visual, audible and haptic (brake jerk) alerts when in danger of a possible rear-end collision.
The optional Lane Departure Warning (LDW) has been designed specifically for motorway driving in order to reduce the risk of the vehicle accidentally departing from its current lane.
If the driver does not take action, the system will provide a limited level of active braking to help slow the vehicle down and minimize the impact.

compensate for this and provide the appropriate amount of additional braking. The driver can adjust the FCW sensitivity from “far” (default status) to “near” mode that gives less time for reaction. FCW can be deactivated completely. Rear View & Surround View Camera The standard rear parking camera is located above the license plate. It turns on automatically when the reverse gear is selected and shows the area behind the car on the high resolution head unit display. The Surround View Camera system, which comes optionally on the Levante with 350 hp and as a standard on the Levante S, uses four cameras in total and provides a clear 360° view around the car on a top-down image in the 8.4” MTC Plus Display. It is activated automatically in reverse gear or manually via the soft button on the 8.4” MTC Plus Display. Park Assist The Park Assist system provides visual and audible indications of the distance between the rear or front bumper and a detected obstacle when reversing or moving forward. The screen in the instrument cluster display provides visual warnings and an increasingly frequent sound according to the obstacle distance. Four sensors in the rear bumper monitor the area behind the vehicle up to approximately 2 metres and six sensors in the front bumper monitor the area in front of the vehicle up to 1.2 metres. Park Assist is fitted as a standard on all Levante variants.
Q: One of the distinctive features of The Levante is its state-ofart; 3-litre V6 engine, can you tell us more about this engine in terms of performance? A: Maserati’s new 3.0 liter V6 gasoline engines have been a great success since they were introduced in the Ghibli and Quattroporte models. The Levante features the 3-litre unit with two different power outputs 430 & 350 hp. The V6 petrol engine is twin turbo with the latest GDI technology developed by the Maserati Powertrain in conjunction with the Ferrari Powertrain development team. This new generation of Maserati engines is more powerful, more exciting to drive and more eco-friendly than ever The Levante’s 3-litre 350 hp engine has been designed to offer an outstanding driving experience along with a frugal use of fuel. It delivers 500 Nm torque from 1,750 up to 4,750 rpm. Equipped with this V6 engine, the Levante reaches 0-100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 251 km/h, a combined consumption of 10.7 l/100 km on the NEDC test cycle and 249 g/km of CO2 emissions. The 430 hp version of the twin turbo V6 engine has already made its mark in the Ghibli, and has now been improved even further to deliver an extra 20 hp.
