Dear Reader, With the massive popularity of SUVs surpassing sedans and even the humble hatchback, it was only a matter of time before we organized a proper test drive of all available SUVs around Qatar. Gathering vehicles from all ranges of the SUV segment, we acquired compacts, mid-size, luxury, full-size and even sporty SUVs to find the best one in each respective category. Although it was difficult ranking them, we looked at design, interior quality, engines, performance, and off-road abilities. From the smooth tarmac on the highways and the bumpy surface through small city roads, to the gravel, mud, and even sand in the great outdoors of Qatar, each and every SUV got thoroughly put through its paces. Note that all of the awards were only given to the vehicles we were able to test. We went into this completely neutral and unbiased, judging the vehicles on their performance in several independent categories, taking into consideration their targeted market and segment

BEST TECHNOLOGY SUV
AUDI Q7
The Audi Q7 receives the Best Technology SUV award, and with a good reason. Featuring state of the art technology and cutting edge systems it’s one of the, if not the most technically advanced SUVs in the world. Audi made sure to give their flagship SUV all the tech they were able to cram into the large body, and the result is nothing short of astonishing. By: Tarek Hawchar

AUDI MADE SURE TO GIVE THEIR FLAGSHIP SUV ALL THE TECH THEY WERE ABLE TO CRAM INTO THE LARGE BODY, AND THE RESULT IS NOTHING SHORT OF ASTONISHING
”
14 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
AUDI The first ever Q7 made its debut back in 2005, when it quickly started racking up popularity and success. With engine lineups ranging from diesel V6s to massive 6 liter V12s and lots of gasoline units as well, the world quickly started buying them by the masses. After nine years, Audi launched the second generation Q7 in 2016, so the car you’re seeing right now is fresh off the production line. With brand new-styling and interior upgrades, it still sits atop the SUV segment. There’s even a Q7- e-tron plug-in hybrid version, the first ever such vehicle from Audi with a diesel engine. It’s also the world’s first diesel SUV hybrid. EXTERIOR As mentioned, the outside gets a complete revamp in the form of new front and rear fascias, different wheels and some minor changes on the side. It follows Audi’s current design language, keeping in check with the new A4 and A6, as well as the second-gen R8 supercar. At the front the two large headlights have been redesign and now feature full LED technology, for both running and main lights. The singleframe grille is as massive as the bumper intakes beneath it. The chromed edges of the grille connect it to the headlights, resulting in a rather unique appearance. At the back there’s a new tailgate which doesn’t differ too much from the last one, but the reshaped narrow lights are heaps better. The exhaust pipes have been reshaped too, and now sport trapezoidal exits. The character line running the length of the car has been moved and positioned closer to the SUV’s sills, with a sharper waistline. If it looks less clumsy and bulky than the old one, it’s because it is. It isn’t just an optical illusion. The new Q7 is almost 4 centimeters shorter than the old car and some 1.5 cm narrower. The height is the same. The biggest change comes arguably from the weight department. Certain trims weight as much as 300 kilograms less than the equivalent counterpart from the old Q7. That’s a massive reduction of around 20 percent. Most of that weight has been shed from the chassis, but some was extracted from the body structure as well. It offers 11 exterior colors, out of which four are new. A sportier S-line variant offers a more aggressive exterior thanks to new bumpers, air inlets, roof spoiler with diffuser and a dark, gloss finish on the grille. INTERIOR Despite the fact that the Q7 shrunk in size, the interior is actually larger and longer with more headroom and legroom. There’s an extra 2.5 centimeters between the front and second row of seats, and a whopping 4 cm and 2.5 cm more headroom in the front and back respectively. There’s more cargo space too.

IT’S BEEN GIVEN NEW PURPOSE, BUT IT STILL RESIDES AT THE TOP OF THE LUXURY SUV SEGMENT WITH THE VERY BEST OF THEM
The seven seater offers 300 liters of room behind the third row, while the normal five seater an even more impressive 880 liters. If you thought the exterior was new and fresh, wait till you get a look at the interior. It’s been completely redesigned, retaining next to nothing from the old SUV. The bulky dashboard with fiddly A/C vents and buttons has been replaced by a tall center console. The result is a big increase in ergonomics and comfort. The steering wheel is brand new, sporting a three-spoke design, and so is the instrument cluster which is now completely digital much like in the rest of Audi’s new lineup. The materials are typical Audi, which is to say brilliant. Everything you see and touch is high-quality and soft. The excellent MMI system is a joy to use, and the 10.1-inch tablets in the back acting as seat monitors a real pleasure to interact with. Powered by NVIDIA Tegra 4 processors, they’re temperature resistant and display the MMI’s navigation. ENGINES AND PERFORMANCE Under the hood of the new Audi Q7 you’ll find three different engine choices. A 2.0 liter four-cylinder is the standard, turning out 252 horsepower and 368 Nm of torque. It’s the most fuel efficient Q7 to ever leave the Audi factory, while maintaining more than enough power to easily propel the Q7’s large body. If you want more power, there\s always the 3.0 liter V6 with 33 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque. A V6 equipped Q7 can reach 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds and go on to 250 km/h, where it hits the electronic limiter restricting it from accelerating further. In Europe there’s even a diesel 3.0 V6 TDI variant with 272 horsepower, but it’s primarily designed for fuel economy, although with 600 Nm of torque it pulls like a train. A new, updated eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission is standard on all models. 16 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION The redesigned Audi Q7 is everything the old car was, and then some. It’s been given new purpose, but it still resides at the top of the luxury SUV segment with the very best of them. With Audi’s latest gadgets on board, including the innovative and clever MMI system, it deservedly gets our best technology SUV award.

BEST LUXURY SUV
BENTLEY BENTAYGA
When Bentley announced they would build an SUV, oh how the automotive world laughed. Bentley had never before attempted to build something similar, and most people didn’t think they were capable of doing so. There were even those who feared the SUV might ruin Bentley’s reputation and ultimately destroy the company itself. If you stop to think about it however, it made sense from the start. Bentley is great at making luxury coupes and convertibles, perhaps the best at it, the Continental is proof enough of that. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

However, the market for such vehicles is rather limited, whereas the possibilities of the SUV are just getting bigger and bigger, especially now with the added popularity the segment’s been getting. Designing a large, luxury SUV should have been Bentley’s first idea, and to be honest we’re surprised it didn’t happen sooner because it was only a matter of time. Come 2015 and the Frankfurt Motor Show, where Bentley debuted the Bentayga, and low and behold how the entire world stood up and took notice. Despite the somewhat questionable Bentayga name, the car proved to be more than anyone ever expected it to be. Not just because it’s the most luxurious, everyone kind of expected that, but also because it’s the fastest and most powerful SUV in the world. Hence why it rightfully earns our Best Luxury Sport SUV award. EXTERIOR Although a Bentley SUV was hinted back in 2012 at the Geneva Motor Show with the 2012 Bentley EXP 9 F Concept, the production car we see today doesn’t resemble it even the slightest bit. The reason being that while the EXP 9 F looked gorgeous in its own right, it was too big of a departure from Bentley’s current lineup. It wouldn’t have made sense to create a car which looks nothing like the rest of Bentley’s models. It was therefore easier to just graft the Continental’s design onto the Bentayga and sort of mold it to accommodate and suit a large SUV rather than a convertible or coupe. Despite the fact that it isn’t as striking as the concept we adored, it’s not a bad looking SUV by any means. The front headlights for instance offer an immediate resemblance to the ones found in the Continental. The large grille, although large, shares the same design and cues as the one in the Conti. The bumper is different, and so are the intake vents, but the height of the Bentayga and the engine packaging and arrangement inside the bay meant there was no other way around that. The side profile is similar to the Audi Q7, because that’s what it is effectively underneath (it rides on the same platform and uses similar underpinnings), but most of the similarities stop there. The rear end is a lot squarer than the front. The small taillights along with the relatively narrow window make the back end sporty and aggressive, but not overstated. The only thing giving away the SUV’s true potential are the rather massive dual exhaust pipes on each side shaped in the form of an oval. Despite that, they’re classy and offer a level of dignity which is unrivaled for the power this car’s making, but more on that later.

INTERIOR The first time you get in a Bentayga you honestly forget that this is anything other than a first-class Bentley product. It’s so similar in design and material quality to the Continental that you could legitimately think for a moment you’re in a Conti, but the size and spaciousness of the cabin soon makes you realize this is something much, much bigger. Naturally, a lot of components have been redesigned or adapted to suite the SUV, but they offer resemblance to those in the coupe or convertible sibling. The entire cabin is filled with handcrafted leather, metal trims, wood, a large eight-inch touchscreen and even a big dial in the middle of the center console, giving the driver full control on almost all of the SUV’s features. Comfort in a Bentley shouldn’t be discussed, but for the sake of this review we’ll mention it. The front seats alone are 22-way adjustable, with heating, ventilation and massage functions all as standard. The rear row can be fitted with a traditional bench in which cases the Bentayga can seat five, but most people go for two individual seats in the back. It does mean you can ferry around a total of three people not including yourself, but all of them will enjoy luxury not seen in first-class flights. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The flagship W12 TSI from VW produces a staggering 600 horsepower and, wait for it, 900 Nm of torque. It has more power than most lorries, and we’re talking about a relatively light and nimble SUV. The result is nothing short of breathtaking. With a fast and precise eight-speed auto coupled to the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Bentayga can sprint to 100 km/h in a scarcely believable 4 seconds dead. It will go on to 301 km/h, becoming the first SUV to break the 300 km/h barrier. For reference, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S stops accelerating after around 283 km/h. Simply incredible. 22 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION Bentley set out to create the most luxurious SUV, and we’d say they successfully accomplished just that. However, in the process of doing so they also created the most powerful and fastest SUV ever made. For that, we have to give the Bentayga a 10/10. If you’re going to do something, do it right and be the best at it. The Bentayga certainly is.

BMW X5 M
What do you get when you cross a luxurious and sporty BMW X5 SUV with their racing M division? Well, as if it needs any more introduction, the answer is the BMW X5 M. Based on the standard X5, the M version has always been a mad and bonkers thing. The performance it exhibits does not correspond to what a large SUV should physically be capable of. It seems to bends the rules of nature at its will. The latest iteration was first launched in 2010, some four years after the second-gen X5 debuted. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

BMW
Over the years it received numerous upgrades, boosting power levels and refinement at the same time. It’s a weird thing to review. On one side, you want to hate it because the thought of a large SUV with sporting credentials is just silly. If you want a fast car you take a sedan or a wagon, not an SUV. And yet, despite that, it’s so fast, agile and nimble that you can’t help but fall in love with it. The fact that it has a great big V8 under the hood may have something to do with it too. It’s sort of like a person you’re really envious of because they’re so capable, but given the chance to befriend them you wouldn’t hesitate for a moment because they’re just cool. EXTERIOR It borrows most of the exterior cues from the standard facelift X5. This includes the new bumpers, both at the front and the rear, facelifted headlights and taillights, different intake openings and a few minor changes here and there. The M model, unlike the rest of the lineup, can be easily distinguished thanks to a few noticeable elements. For starters, it doesn’t take a massive car enthusiast to look at that front gulping bumper with large air openings to realize this is a fast car. The lower apron is a dead giveaway too. Around the back you’ll notice it has the traditional BMW M quad exhausts, similar to what you’d find on an M3 or an M4. If those don’t give it away, nothing will. The wheels are different because it’s an M product and it gets unique colors too. Overall however, we’re really surprised by just how restrained and relatively conservative is. Compared to some of its rivals and most M models with flared arches and large wings, the X6 plays the understatement card extremely well. It seems BMW has found the perfect formula for a mix between sportiness, aggression and elegance. INTERIOR The interior received multiple upgrades throughout the years, but the design is still basically the same. The leather wrapped M steering wheel is probably our favorite thing in the entire cabin. The size is just right, the leather is of the highest-quality variety and provides excellent grip, perfect for sporty driving. Given the fact that you’re mostly interacting with it and nothing else, BMW has done a terrific job highlight what the X5 M is all about. Elsewhere, there’s a Nappa leather covered dashboard, Alcantara headliner and aluminum trim pieces decorating the entire cabin. An instrument cluster unique to the X5 M further separates this from the standard X5. An optional heads-up display can be specified when ordering it, and we highly recommend you do.

It gives you the opportunity to never take your eyes off the road when checking the speed, rev counter or even gear. On the topic of seats, we have to mention that they’re comfortable but prioritize support, as they ideally should with the amount of G-forces this thing is capable of putting out. You get all the latest advanced safety systems, both passive and active, including an alarm system. Four-zone climate control is standard, as is the premium Harman Kardon surround sound system. It’s your usual BMW when it comes to the technology offered. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE This is where the X5 M really starts to come into its own. The tried and tested 4.4 liter V8 churns out 567 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, a 12 hp and 71 Nm increase over the last model. The result is an SUV capable of sprinting to 100 km/h in 4 seconds dead. That’s not just fast for a SUV, but fast full stop. It will shame most sportscars and embarrass even some supercars. The key to this immense acceleration isn’t just in the engine. The new eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission plays a big role too. Mated to the revised xDrive all-wheel drive system, it boosts fuel efficiency in addition to increasing power output. Official stats claim 11.1 liters per 100 kilometers, but in reality you might struggle to see that figure since you’ll be mashing the loud pedal each time you get a chance. The top speed is 250 km/h, but it’s electronically limited. An optional M Driver’s Package can lift that to 280 km/h, again, limited. But it’s not the acceleration or the top speed which impresses you the most, but rather how capable the chassis is. It behaves like it weighs half a ton less than it actually does, cornering flat and level like it’s on rails. No other sporty SUV on the market can achieve the cornering G-forces the X5 M can, and we’re dead serious about that. Nothing this side of a fast sportscar or supercar will be able to see where the X5 M went. 28 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION Although not the best SUV out there, the X5 M manages to capture you with a charm of its own. It’s not that practical, and it can’t really go off-road if we’re honest, but it can scare you to death in the corners. It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and we like that.

Why should you consider it at all? Take a look at the products around you. Your phone, TV, fridge… chances are they’re made in China. More than 90% of all appliances and technology devices are manufactured in China. The economic growth this enormous country received in the last decade or so is massive. They went from being a supplier of mediocre products designed as cheap alternatives to a legitimate top-market contender. Even the most modern stuff like iPhones get designed and built in China, so why should your car be any different. The days where China was synonymous with bad quality are long gone. They’re a leading force in a lot of markets today. Poorly-built Chinese vehicles on the verge of falling apart are no longer the case. Think of it this way: a lot of the parts on your car are in fact made in China, so what’s to say a fully Chinese-built car won’t be any good? If the cars China has been spewing out over the last couple of years are anything to go by, then we’ll be the first to say that we’ll only be seeing an increase in Chinese vehicles’ popularity. EXTERIOR Take a look at the GS4’s exterior and there’s nothing to indicate that it’s a Chinese-built product. It looks no different than the equivalent European, Japanese or American crossover SUV. It slightly looks like a mix between a Toyota in the front end and a Citroen or Peugeot at the back, which is no bad thing at all. The Chinese may have started off copying famous and popular vehicle designs, but over the years they started evolving their own visual languages and this is effectively the end result. Looking thoroughly modern and crisp, and dare we say it European, the GS4 is certainly a good-looking car. The chiseled front end is clutter-free, with a large grille in the middle boasting horizontal lines and two fastback headlights. The foglights hide in the corners of the bumper, assimilated into the air vent-like design. There’s even a diffuser of sorts at the bottom (it’s aesthetic), rounding off the entire look of the GS4. Although not striking or that appealing in any particular way, you can’t say the GS4 is a bad-looking car. Developing a brand image and a fascia associated with it will take time, but we’re sure the Chinese can eventually make it. INTERIOR The interior follows the exterior closely. GAC used decent materials to put it all together and the build quality seems to be at a surprisingly high level. The design is simple and minimalistic, but it works and that’s all that matters. A lot of the features, equipment and layout have been used from other GS models, but that’s not a bad thing by any means.

IT LOOKS NO DIFFERENT THAN THE EQUIVALENT EUROPEAN, JAPANESE OR AMERICAN CROSSOVER SUV
The buttons are laid out in an ergonomic fashion, with everything residing exactly where you’d expect it to. The seats are comfortable and supportive, but only to a certain extent. Push it too hard and you’ll find they lack a bit of lateral support. We’re just nit-picking really. Besides, who pushes a crossover SUV at nine tenths? Other than that, there’s plenty of headroom and legroom for all occupants, including a relatively large cargo area. Here’s the thing: it’s by no means a rival to something from BMW or Mercedes when it comes to the interior, but you can tell they definitely tried. The price different however, is just too large. That said, if you don’t mind the slightly worse cabin quality compared to German manufacturers (everyone expected it), the GAC’s tempting price might lure you in. DRIVETRAIN Equipped with a 235T unit, the GS4 makes the best of its combustion control technology and low-inertia E-Turbo. With lots of torque low down and a decent amount of power at the higher end, the GS4 is definitely not lacking any horsepower. In fact, it’s perfectly usable on a day to day basis. It won’t win any records, but it gets the GS4 moving along at a reasonable rate. The best part? It’s extremely economical. SAFETY The GS4 uses GAC’s safe body structure. It boasts BOSCH’s latest ESP software, ensuring it gets a five-star safety rating in Chinese crash tests. It’s the only vehicle to offer that on the Chinese market.
34 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION Though not for everyone, the GAC GS4 is undoubtedly a good choice if you want a more affordable crossover SUV. It does 95% of what an equivalent European or Japanese SUV will do. Sure it doesn’t wear a premium badge and it depreciates more, but the initial price is affordable enough to offset both of those things in a lot of cases. Want the best? Look elsewhere. Want the most bang for your buck? Look no further than the GAC GS4.

BEST FAMILY 7 SEATER
HONDA PILOT
The Honda Pilot has always been a great family hauler, but the problem was it wasn’t much of a looker. It delivered practicality wise, but could never hold a candle to the more handsome rivals. The third generation which arrived in 2016 thankfully solved that issue. The old boxy design is a thing of the past, replaced with new, modern styling and an upgraded interior. The newest iteration of the Honda brings quite a few changes, putting it back at the top of the list for any large family. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

That, along with several more reasons which you’ll find later on in the review, is why it’s our Best Family 7 Seater vehicle on the market today. EXTERIOR Honda announced a refreshed Pilot some time ago, long before we even saw the new car, but somehow people remained skeptical. Perhaps because Honda is known to sticking with traditional and conservative styling. After an entire decade of boxy and dull designs however, they’ve had enough as well. The new Pilot boasts sleek, elegant lines and angles, in a design which conforms to the rest of their lineup. It doesn’t just look more elegant and sporty, but premium and up-market too. The front end is extremely similar to the new CR-V, but you can tell it’s the Pilot because the headlights and the grille feature some noticeable changes. The lights don’t have the LED decorations at the bottom of the housing, and the grille is comprised of three horizontal lines, the top of which extends and blends into the headlights. The overall shape does remind you of the CR-V, albeit a larger one, but the similarities end there. The side inlets, air dam, turn signals, etc. differ in the Pilot. The back is a large departure from the old car too. The old car was just dull and boring, with no real accents or features. It sported dual exhausts, but that was about it. The new Pilot offers LED lights which are nothing like those on the CR-V, with an elegant bumper and a cool spoiler on the top of the rear hatch. The sloping roofline and slanted tailgate add a dose of sportiness, while the elegant and simple apron makes sure it’s still modest. INTERIOR The interior takes some cues from the CR-V, but only design wise. The dashboard for instance, although looking similar, feels heaps better in the Pilot thanks to more expensive materials and a better fit and finish. There’s still a fair bit of plastics in the cabin, but they all feel solid and sturdy. You can tell they’re of higher quality. A new digital instrument cluster replaces the old analogue one, offering more visibility both during day time and at night. The center stack got rid of the buttons which made it cluttered and now boasts impressive ergonomics. The steering wheel is new too, as are most of the buttons inside the cabin. Heated and ventilated seats are offered as optional extras, but they’re not that expensive. Higher-end trims offer the user optional captain’s chairs for the second row which replace the already existing bench. It does mean that you won’t be able to fit three people in the middle row, but the added comfort and luxury is more than welcome if you don’t need the full eight seats.

A large 8-inch touchscreen powered by Android OS takes care of all the onboard systems, including the newly updated Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation. The rear entertainment system comprises of a 9-inch display with DVD and Blu-ray optional extras. There’s more than enough cargo space behind the third row, but if you need the extra room you can always remove the last row or even the second one. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The new Honda Pilot continues to use the tried and tested 3.5 liter V6 unit. Although it’s been in production for a long time, it’s not lacking any power or refinement. It outputs 280 horsepower and 355 Nm of torque, which is more than adequate for the type of vehicle it is. In fact, it’s one of the fastest three-row SUVs at the moment, hitting 100 km/h in a respectable 6.5 seconds. It drives like you’d expect a large SUV to drive. Good but not exactly sporty. There’s a good amount of body roll through the corners, but nothing major. It will understeer if pushed to the limit, but which large SUV doesn’t? The positive side is that it’s been tuned for comfort, not sportiness, and it does that phenomenally well. Long distance driving is a joy in the Honda Pilot. It just eats up the kilometers. It wants to sit on the highway at highway speeds, but then again, that’s what it was designed to do. CONCLUSION The Honda Pilot is a clear winner if you need a large 7-seater family hauler. The redesigned one is that much better than the old car, offering you amazing styling and even more performance. With an entire arsenal of advanced safety systems, it’s also one of the safest SUVs. WINNER HYUNDAI GRAND SANTA FE OFF-ROAD 2017 The last decade or so has proven to be the turning point for Hyundai. They went from making cheap, plastic vehicles everyone bought only for the price into genuine market competitors with quality products in an unreasonably quick time. They’re now not only equal with the rest of the rivals, but top them in many crucial areas. Take the Santa Fe for example. H Y U N DA I blooded fashion. To keep the Santa Fe fresh and up to date, Hyundai introduced a mid-life facelift in 2016. The facelift was a new exterior design, better interior and more technology. Offered in two versions, a standard 5-seater Santa Fe and the 7-seater Grand Santa Fe, it’s the latter which we’re discussing. It won our Best 7 Seater SUV award, offering lots more than its competitors were able to. The first Hyundai Santa Fe made its debut in 2001, as the company’s first SUV. The second-generation followed some five years later, bringing in some much needed changes, but it’s the current, third generation that Hyundai got just right. So what does it offer that? Let’s take a look. EXTERIOR Both the Santa Fe and the Grand Santa Fe feature similar styling, but there are a couple of differences between them. Namely, the larger, three-row SUV sports upright fog lights and five slats in the grille at the front, while the 5-seater makes do with horizontal fog lights and just three slats. Nothing major or significant, but just a little something to make distinguishing them easier from the outside. The minor 2017 facelift brings a redesign to the rear fascia too. The taillights have been reshaped and are sportier, which blends in rather well with the dual exhaust outlets. The sides feature a new rocker panel trim with integrated accents finished in silver, and the side-view mirrors get a heating function as standard now. The wheels boast a brand new design too, as well as sizes (17, 18 and 19 inch variants). The headlights receive LED daytime running lights in the Santa Fe, but the bigger Grand Santa Fe receives LED fog lights only. Automatic on/off function is standard. Last but not least, a new Nightfall Blue color joins the palette for the Santa Fe Sport, while Storm Blue makes an appearance in the Grand Santa Fe. It’s by no means the most elegant or understated SUV on the market, but it is striking, there’s no denying that. Hyundai’s designed took a turn for the better some two or three years ago, and they’ve been on a roll ever since. Pictures don’t do it justice either. You have to take a look at one in the flesh to truly appreciate all the weird and unique angles and creases it’s got. Definitely differs from some of the duller SUVs on the market. INTERIOR Inside you get a revised center stack, new button layout and a whole array of new infotainment options. Let’s start with the 7.0 inch touchscreen. It’s standard on the three-row Grand Santa Fe and optional on the smaller Santa Fe (which gets a 5.0 inch display). There’s even a larger 8 inch screen with navigation if you want the best of the best. It’s fast and intuitive, even if slightly lacking in color compared to some of the rivals. 44 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com

Both models are compatible with Android Auto and offer smartphone integration with over 40 various apps. Smartphones with Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher are supported. A premium audio system with 12 speakers offers immaculate sound quality and volume levels, thanks to the Quantum Logic Surround sound technology and the Clari-Fi Music system. You get all the latest gadgets such as keyless ignition and entry, cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free integration, etc. The panoramic sunroof is a great option for those warm sunny days. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Five-seater vehicles get a 2.4 liter four-cylinder as well as a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-pot with 185 hp and 240 horsepower respectively, but the larger, heavier Grand Santa Fe is only offered with a 3.3 liter Lambda II V6. With 290 horsepower, it’s for the better. It has no trouble moving the large SUV at a more than impressive pace. It pulls and pulls, even when fully loaded. We were thoroughly impressed with the unit. Mated to a six-speed auto with Shiftronic tech it isn’t as fast or as precise during gear changes as its rivals with eight or even ten speed automatics, but it gets the job done. Front-wheel drive is standard (both models), but naturally you can specify an all-wheel drive system which comes in handy in rain and snow. It’s by no means a hardcore off-roader, but it has no trouble doing light off-road duty. The tall protected undercarriage coupled with the relatively short overhangs means it can’t ground easily. If you’re worried about scratching, we’d suggest you stick to the roads, but it’s great to know that it can tackle a relatively modest trail with ease.

CONCLUSION The 7-seater Grand Santa Fe is Hyundai’s best SUV effort yet. It’s the perfect family vehicle, capable of carrying all your family members and their cargo with ease. What’s more, with decent power it goes rather quick too, and doesn’t get afraid of a little dirt or sand should you aim it at an off-road trail. That’s an “A+” for effort for Hyundai.

INFINITI QX70
Ah, the Infiniti QX70. One of the most underrated vehicles in the history of the automotive world. A victim of the market, but not by its own fault. Where do we even begin? Why not at the start. Launched in 2003 when the whole SUV craze was still in its early stages, the QX70 was considered an outsider by the standards back then, so you might imagine why people are hesitant to purchase it right now. The first generation was alright, but nothing particularly special or exciting. It did its job just fine, but that was that. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

INFINITI Then in 2008 the new FX arrived, which later, in 2014, got renamed to the QX70. The QX70 is a mid-size sporty SUV with luxurious elements. That’s probably the best way to describe its purpose. Now the issue is that in a world as competitive as this one and a market as ruthless as the one the QX70 is in, there is no room for error. Companies like Honda and Toyota are profiting by making conservative, traditional cars which the majority of people will buy purely because of the brand. Infiniti however, almost always takes a different route. Think of them as the underground, cool edition of your average manufacturer. Not a Porsche or a Range Rover, but somewhere between those and everyday mainstream motors. There’s just something so unique and special to them that you can’t help but get drawn in. On top of that, the QX70 won our Best Mid-Size Sport SUV, and for a couple of very good reasons which you’ll learn by reading the article. The fact that it’s different and somewhat unknown, dare we say, is reason number one. EXTERIOR You can’t call it beautiful, but it’s definitely a handsome car. If this was a person, it would be an extremely fit model dressed in the latest suit complete with a tie. It’s a striking beast. You can’t help but notice how aggressive it is, but not in an in your face sort of way. It’s more dignified than that. The closest thing we can compare it to, styling wise, is the Jaguar F-Pace. Although they’re different automobiles, the idea and concept behind the styling feels, at least to us, similar. The sloping long roofline, elongated hood, bold and outward grille complete with swept-back headlights… it’s all there. Option the flagship Ultimate or Limited packages and you’re looking at an even meaner vehicle with exterior trim additions and various color palettes. The Limited receives the dark-trim treatment, where all of the chromed pieces have been painted black. The Infiniti symbol is the only thing which remains chrome, everything else has been “glossed” out. The rear sort of mimics the front with smaller, slanted taillights and a clean bumper section with dual exhausts, one on each side, but it’s nowhere near as good looking in our opinion. The front is this car’s best angle, especially when viewed from the side a bit so that you catch a glimpse of that coupe-like roofline. INTERIOR The interior borrows some components heavily from its Nissan siblings, but the materials and overall finish is just a tad nicer. No disrespect to Nissan, they make a great job, but this is their luxury brand after all. The cabin feels like a really nice place to be in. You can sense the effort of time and money which went into just making the insides of the QX70. Head to head, nothing can beat it in terms of sheer cabin quality. 50 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com

ITS LUXURY ELEMENTS CREATE A NICE ENVIRONMENT FOR ANYONE, BUT IT’S THE ADDED SPORTINESS WHICH MAKES IT TRULY ONE OF A KIND
The Ultimate edition gets a few special features which aren’t found in the normal QX70. A shiny black lacquer finish is present on most surfaces, along with purple stitching and softer leather. Other than that, it’s standard QX70. There’s a lot of room in both the back and the front, even for taller passengers, and you can even drive 5 adults in relative comfort. What else is there to say? It manages to perfectly blend luxury with sportiness, with just the right amount of both qualities. Not a lot of SUVs can brag about that. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The QX70 is powered by three engines, two of which make it to Qatar, as sadly the 3 liter V6 with 240 hp and 550 Nm of torque gets dropped out. The normal QX70 gets a 3.7 liter V6 with 329 horsepower and 362 Nm of torque. Mated to a seven-speed adaptive-shift automatic transmission complete with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, it can reach 100 km/h in a respectable 6.8 seconds. It uses just 9.8 liters per one hundred kilometers, so it’s very fuel efficient. The real fun starts in the QX70 S however. Using the older 5.0 liter V8, it’s able to produce 390 horsepower and a massive 500 Nm of torque. It’s not just fast for a mid-size SUV, but it’s fast full stop. Introduce it to a corner and you find yourself being pleasantly surprised. It handles like a larger car, not a tall SUV with high center of gravity. You can genuinely chuck it about in corners and get a good laugh at how responsive and agile it is. Certain sedans and hatchback could learn a thing or two about handling from this brute.
52 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION The new QX70 isn’t just one of the best mid-size Sport SUVs currently on the market, but the best one period. Its luxury elements create a nice environment for anyone, but it’s the added sportiness which makes it truly one of a kind.

JAGUAR F-PACE
If William Walmsley and William Lyons, the original founds of Jaguar, knew that Jaguar started developing SUVs, they’d probably be scratching their heads. But only until actually finding out how great it is, at which point all your against arguments fall into the water and you’re left with the product itself. ALL JAGUARS SHOULD HAVE GRACE, PACE AND SPACE
”
William Lyons
JAG UAR
The company’s first ever Sport Utility Vehicle, the F-Pace, made quite an entrance with a bold design mimicking the rest of Jaguar’s lineup. And it most definitely manages that, as all it takes is one good look at it to realize it’s something truly unique and special. The name, F-Pace, as silly as it sounds, was actually inspired by William Lyons’ maxim (one of them): “All Jaguars should have grace, pace and space.” Most of the styling is borrowed from the C-x17 concept cars, but then again all new Jaguars wear that familiar face. The massive success that the C-X17 proved to be indicated to Jaguar that there was indeed such a demand for a vehicle of that nature and posture. The end result is the F-Pace, a SUV we’d all like to own. EXTERIOR The exterior is pretty Jaguar-ish. Imagine a larger, swollen XJ and you’re halfway there. We’re not bashing on the design, we’re actually glad it looks like its siblings, because that’s no bad thing at all. The headlights carry Jaguar’s traditional ‘J’ Blade design, present on the new XJ, XE and even XF. The large, gaping grille and large air intakes were inspired by the sedans too, but obviously they were slightly modified here to accommodate a large SUV fascia. Put it this way: if an F-Pace is behind you on the motorway, you definitely get out of its way. The side isn’t as spectacular or special as the rest of the car, but then again what do you expect. It’s got a nice sporty SUV silhouette, some side gills extending over the front doors and a cool inverted crease just at the bottom of the front and rear doors. It gives it stance and present, while managing to keep an understated and discrete look. It’s about as clean and clutter-free of a side profile you’ll find anywhere in the SUV segment. Then you move over to the back, and get your mind blown again. Not because it’s something groundbreaking or innovative, because it isn’t really if we’re honest, but it is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Using the taillights borrowed from the F-Type, a tiny rear window and a sloping roofline with an over the top spoiler, it really doesn’t get any sportier than that for an SUV. The dual exhaust outlets just round off the entire look. As a whole, very few rivals can even come close in terms of design. INTERIOR If there’s one thing Jaguar’s always been good at, it’s making beautiful interiors, and the F-Pace is no exception. Just take a look at the design of the dash or the center console. It may not be too outlandish, but it’s elegant and simple, much like the exterior. High-quality materials are present everywhere, from the soft leather to the brushed aluminum trims. The instrument panel is similar to the ones found in the XE and XF.

Two analogue dials and a decently sized TFT display in the middle comprise the entire layout. An optional 12.3 inch virtual instrument cluster (large display) offers four visual themes, a full-screen navigation and crystal clear HD. It not only looks good, but is extremely functional too. Although it may not seem like it from the outside, space is one of the F-Pace’s stronger points. For what it is, a relatively small, light SUV, there’s ample amount of legroom and headroom in both rows. The second row is big enough to accommodate three adults, though you wouldn’t like to keep them there for prolonged periods of time. The leather seats are comfortable but you can tell they were designed with sporty intentions in mind by the way they grip you and support you through the corners. The amount of cargo space on offer is impressive too. Definitely our favorite interior from the segment. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The smallest 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder with just 180 doesn’t make it to Qatar, so the 3.0 liter V6 is the base engine. Lifted straight from the F-Type and producing 340 horsepower thanks to a Twin-Vortex supercharger, it’s capable of thrusting the F-Pace to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. For a car of this nature, that’s mighty impressive. Top speed is naturally limited to 250 km/h as per all other models. Then we get to the really juicy unit, the 380 horsepower iteration of the same 3 liter V6. It makes the same 450 Nm of torque, but thanks to more power at the high end of the rev spectrum (6,500 rpm), it can hit 100 km/h in a scarcely believable 5.1 seconds. Top speed is once again limited to “just” 250 km/h. Both engines use ZF’s brilliant 8HP70 8-speed auto transmission. The F-Pace really lives up to its Jaguar qualities as far as dynamic capabilities are concerned. 58 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
Not only does it handle better than all other rivals, but it can embarrass a lot of performance sedans and hatchbacks too. It’s got the suspension and power to back it up. Here’s the catch: because it’s got four-wheel drive and uses Jaguar’s clever terrain system, it’s decent off-road too. Just don’t expect it to rock climb, as that’s not what it’s about. CONCLUSION The last time something this earth-shatteringly good dropped in the SUV world it was the new Range Rover, and we all know that’s a sibling of the F-Pace.

KIA SPORTAGE
Anyone remember the first-generation Kia Sportage from the 1990s? If you don’t you’re probably better off not knowing about it anyway. Designed on a Mazda Bongo platform, Kia was cutting corners left and right to make it more affordable and rake in the profit, but it backfired spectacularly as not a lot of people bought it, even in their domestic market of South Korea. The second generation was an improvement, but not much.

KIA The third-gen was already heading in the right direction, but it was with the fourth iteration of the model in 2016 that Kia finally got things right with. With an all-new exterior, upgraded interior and new more powerful as well as more efficient engines, the redesigned Sportage was finally able to compete with the very best from Germany and Japan. Compared to rivals from Nissan and Mazda in the form of Rogue and the CX-5 respectively, it’s able to offer just as much at a much lower price. It’s come a long way from being an alternative, cheap version to most SUVs on the market, into actually becoming our Best Mid-Size Family SUV award winner. EXTERIOR The fourth generation Sportage upgrades on top of the third one, offering more of a revolution rather than revolution. Peter Schreyer, Kia’s chief designer, sketched out and designed the original Audi TT. With his guidance, the Korean company has been overhauling their entire lineup since 2006. The 2017 Sportage design was a culmination of the hard work between Kia’s design studios in Germany, Korea and California. Although they claim the final product looks like a fighter jet, we’re not so sure. All joking aside, this is now a good looking car. You can easily distinguish it from the previous generation thanks to the front “tiger nose” grille, which is now a prominent Kia styling cue. It doesn’t interact with the headlights at all, despite the fact that it’s wider and lower than before. That actually has a practical purpose of cooling the engine better, it isn’t there just for aesthetic reasons. The headlights are similar to those found on the Kia KX3 concept, but here they’ve been moved further back and slightly higher, arching into the hood of the car almost. A “Dynamic Bending” feature guides them through corners as you turn, lighting up the road ahead better and more clearly. So-called “ice-cube” fog lights rest in the corners of the bumper. They use the same LED technology as the ones found on the brand-new Kia Pro Cee’d. Look at it from the side, and it looks like a weird love-child between a Jaguar F-Pace and a Porsche Macan. The rear looks uncannily like an F-Pace’s, while the front is somewhat reminiscent for Porsche’s baby SUV. Looked at from the back however, those similarities to the F-Pace disappear almost immediately. The entire back end has been revamped, with a longer top rear spoiler, sloping roofline, slender taillights and a two exhaust outlets for a sportier appearance. INTERIOR As large of a facelift the exterior received, it’s nothing compared to the car’s interior. The dashboard for starters has been completely redesigned with a new layout featuring horizontal lines, larger air vents and a well-balanced center console. 6262 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com

All of the buttons and switches are facing the driver, so it’s better ergonomically too. The speedo and rev counter sit on each side of the TFT information display in the instrument cluster, which makes a lot more sense than the old car’s large speedo in the middle. A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, but a larger 8-inch one optional. Both display Kia’s infotainment system equally good, with the slight edge going to the bigger screen for obvious reasons. Wireless mobile device charging is optional, as is a premium JBL audio system with eight speakers and 320 watts. You can specify all kinds of goodies, from a heated steering wheel to dual-zone climate controls and even ventilated and heated front seats. It’s a matter of how much you’re willing to spend. Go for the flagship model with all the toys and you’re looking at a rather expensive proposition. Mind you, it’s still nothing when you look at the asking price of some of its rivals with similar features. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE A Theta 2.4 GDI gasoline engine producing 184 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque is optional, but the standard Nu 2.0 MPI unit is just as good. It comes in two variations. One making 157 hp, the other 155. Both make around 197 Nm of torque. The diesel side of things is covered by a high-output R 2.0 liter unit with a whopping 178 hp (185 in top trim), and an even more impressive 402 Nm of torque. All units boast class-leading fuel consumption figures. It’s mostly designed to ferry families around, which it does wonderfully, but it can also show you its sportier side if you decide to play with it a bit. It won’t beat an F-Pace and most definitely won’t keep up with something like an Evoque, but as a mid-size Family SUV, it’s just about as good of a vehicle as you’re going to find.
64 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION If you’re after the best family SUV, look no further. The redesigned Sportage doesn’t just give its German and Japan rivals a run for their money, but it completely annihilates them in more ways than one. Would we recommend it? As a family vehicle that also happens to be an SUV, absolutely.

KIA SORENTO
The very first Kia Sorento hit the market back in 2003, introduced as a body-on-frame type of vehicle, which was common for the full-size trucks and SUVs at the time. After 9 years in production, most of which it remained unchanged or received very minor facelifts, they decided it was time for a redesigned, third-gen model in 2014. KIA
The new Sorento shares its platform with the Kia Carnival, so it’s small wonder it’s actually 7 cm longer than the last generation. The SUV segment is more competitive than ever before, so Kia went all out in hopes of making the Sorento a class-leader. With the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V hot on its tail, has it done enough? We think it has. Its amazing infotainment system coupled with generous cabin room, third-row seating and affordable price it really is one of the best all-rounders. EXTERIOR Its design, the one thing everyone was complaining about, has finally been modernized. Out went the dated, boring exterior that no one really liked, and in its place we find a more modern, young-looking Sorento. The exterior was always light years behind the Sorento’s interior and performance, in a way it was the only thing limiting it, holding it back. The new car is free from that prison thanks to a rather attractive styling. And what a styling it is. Kia has cracked the market when it comes to aesthetics. Its uniformed design across its range guarantees that most of its models, if not all, are some of the best looking vehicles in their segment. The new design also brings an all-new body. With that we truly mean a different shape. The new car is longer, wider and lower than the old Sorento, but given the longer wheelbase we guessed it would be. The body lines have been toned down a bit just to make sure it doesn’t age prematurely. A slightly more conservative look guarantees them more years on the market. Kia calls the transformation an evolution, but we think it’s more of a revolution. Okay, so the basic shape of the old car is still there, but almost nothing beyond that is the same. You can tell that the new Sorento is large just by looking at it too. The wheelbase is noticeably longer, and so are the front and rear overhangs. New taillights and headlights round off its appearance. It may not be the prettiest car, and it sure isn’t the most aggressive one, but we like it. Is it weird to say you like a Kia? Not in this day and age. INTERIOR We never had a problem with the Sorento’s interior. In fact, it was one of its strong points, but the new car takes it to a whole new level. New premium materials have been used to ensure the cabin is as luxurious as possible, while an improved design to the dash and center console offers passenger something more pleasant to look at. Kia stopped being a cheap, alternative manufacturer full of plastic interiors some ten years ago, and people need to stop believing that misconception still. This is, for all intents and purposes, one of the nicest interiors you will find at this price point.
maqinaonline.com /OFF-ROAD SPECIAL 69
C OV ER STO RY
Then we get to the matter of space, and the fact of the matter is that the Sorento offers it. A lot of it. We’re talking massive amounts of headroom and legroom, in all three rows of seats. Oh, the seats themselves are extremely comfortable, even if they lack a bit of lateral support. This is a great long-distance vehicle, and that’s evident from the moment you get in it. It just soaks up the miles with luxury and comfort. Almost nothing this side of a true luxury SUV can touch it. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE A new 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged unit just made an entrance. It develops 240 hp and 352 Nm of torque, but sadly it won’t be coming to Qatar. The base engine here is a 2.4 liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder with 185 horsepower and 241 Nm of torque. It’s alright, but a vehicle as big as this really struggles with such a small engine past normal cruising speeds. If it’s fully-loaded, forget about it, it likes to take its sweet precious time accelerating. This is where the 3.3 liter V6 comes in. With 290 hp and 348 Nm of torque, it has no issue pushing the big-bodied Sorento forward in a swiftly manner. We could talk about top speed, but it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is the fact that it can tow up to 2.2 tons, which is quite a lot if we’re honest. Don’t expect a sports car in the corners, because it likes to exhibit some body roll and understeer at the limit, but it’s a big SUV, so it’s forgiven. The handling is predictable and stable, even if a little dull. On the upside, it’s perfect in terms of safety with all of its advanced systems such as collision mitigation, automatic braking, etc.
70 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION As a large seven-seater, the Sorento fairs better than expected. If you need a car of its size and with its intended purpose, but are running on a tighter budget, it’s perfect. Plus, the exterior finally matches the rest of the car.

With lots of standard equipment such as auto xenon lights, heated steering wheel and a Digital TV, the Vogue is more than a match for competitors like the BMW X5 and Audi’s very own Q7. LAND ROVER EXTERIOR Starting with the exterior, it’s immediately apparent that this is a Range Rover, there’s no mistaking it for anything else. It may not have the presence of the Autobiography or the mean demeanor of the Supercharged Sport, but it can hold its own just fine. If anything, it looks better as a daily driver since it’s more understated and can fly under the radar quite easily. For most people who plan on using it every day, that’s actually a major bonus, not a downfall. You want to be inconspicuous and stealthy, because people won’t look at you twice or bother you. As far as achieving its intended purpose, we’d say the Vogue does a mighty fine job. Sleek new gills on the front doors and dynamic taillights which wrap around the body disguise the bulky body, but it’s an elegant design altogether. Range Rover designers have managed to keep the traditional Vogue feeling of old, while implementing new design elements and features. You can tell it pays homage to the Range Rovers of old, but it brings with it a certain youthful character and presence. It’s an extremely capable athlete wearing fancy dinner clothes. It won’t offer the same amount of sportiness or aggressiveness as an X5 for example, but for sheer effortless design and appeal, you can’t beat it. It’s a classic British look, and we quite like that. The clamshell hood is present, as is the “floating” roof and the split gate just like in the previous generation Range Rover, but the swept-back headlights and the sharp front grille make it instantly recognizable as the new generation SUV. Most of the styling cues have been borrowed from the company’s fashionable SUV, the Evoque, and it shows in the way the Range Rover looks. Even sitting stationary it’s handsome and elegant. Not a lot of SUVs can pull that look off. INTERIOR Inside, it’s a true Range Rover as one would expect. Don’t be fooled into thinking the entry-level Vogue model skimps out on certain things. It’s just as sumptuous and amazing as anything on offer from Audi or BMW, if not better. Let’s start with the design. You won’t find any carbon fiber accents in the dash, the center console or even the door panels. It’s all beautiful brushed aluminum and a touch of wood accents here and there. The actual styling is what you’d call simple and minimalistic. Nothing’s over the top. The large, horizontal dash extends all the way to the other end of the car in a slab-like manner, giving out nice visibility and practicality. The center console is huge, with a large touchscreen display in the middle and the infotainment center buttons below. For a daily driver, it offers the perfect amount of styling elements, which are neither too distracting nor too dreary.

The seats are amazing. We really mean that. The lateral support they offer is out of this world, and the soft leather is extremely pleasant to the touch. But then again, it is a Range Rover, and you expect that from it. There’s a lot of headroom and legroom in both rows, but it can be slightly difficult to get in the back if you’re a bit shorter. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Any gear, any speed, floor it and you’re away, a 4.4 liter SDV8 unit with 399 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque.. Tthe V8 takes things to an entirely new level. Plus, the sound coming from the back is rather fruity too. The big thing with this new Range Rover is the weight savings the engineers were able to achieve. It’s up to 400 kilograms lighter than the previous generation thanks to an all-aluminum construction, never before heard of in the SUV world. You can tell it’s a wide and tall vehicle still, but also feel that there’s a lot less mass moving underneath you. This positively affects acceleration and handling, as well as stopping. Although it’s just as fast as its German rivals, the big Rangie likes to cruise. It’s in its element at motorway speeds, when the engines can settle into a rhythm, the wind noise is non-existent, as is the road and engine noise. It feels no different than a luxury limo, except you’re sitting in it a lot higher of course.

CONCLUSION The new Range Rover Vogue remains the best entry-level luxury 4X4 you can buy. If you like great levels of sportiness and performance mixed with the best in-class luxury, comfort and refinement, there is no other choice.

RANGE ROVER SPORT
The newest Range Rover Sport is the ultimate expression of what a sporty, luxurious SUV should be. It’s been in development from 2011, just a few years after the standard model arrived. Although it was originally scheduled to be unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in 2012, Land Rover actually debuted it in 2013 at the New York Auto Show. It maintains the standard car’s philosophy of lightweight body with luxurious cabin, except it also sports a dose of excitement and uniqueness. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

THE NEWEST RANGE ROVER SPORT IS THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF WHAT A SPORTY, LUXURIOUS SUV SHOULD BE
”
L A N D ROV E R
The most important thing about the all-new Range Rover is the reduced weight. A first-in-class all-out aluminum structure helps it shave off a staggering 420 kilograms, which is unheard of in a large SUV. The engineers have essentially managed to scrub off a third of a VW Golf from the large Rangie. Than in itself deserves a massive round of applause. There are four equipment (trim) levels to choose from: S, SE, HSE and the top of the line Autobiography. It’s not just the best Range Rover in the entire existence of the model, but by far and away the best sport/luxury SUV on the market. EXTERIOR The outside retains the standard car’s already striking and gorgeous design. It manages to add a dose of aggressiveness and character not present in the normal Range Rover however. It’s 149 mm shorter (mostly overhangs), some 55 mm lower and even 45 kg less on top of the already enormous weight savings. It now has a squared-off stance unlike any other SUV on the market. The BMW X5 M comes close appearance wise, but isn’t anywhere near the Sport’s level of luxury or refinement. Simply put it’s in a class of one. It really is. Viewed from the front, head on, you can tell right away it’s got a more-modern appearance with more streamlined elements: slimmer lights, sculpted voluptuous corners and a rearward sloping grille. A two-bar theme is what you might call the Sport’s distinctive characteristic, with a two-bar for the twin stakes on the fender vents, a two-bar front grille and twin lines in the taillight graphics. The rear has been thoroughly upgraded too. The taillights use a new design which when coupled with the LED technology gives the Range Rover an entirely new character and vibe. It’s a great thing to look at this Range Rover Sport. It’s not so much beautiful as it is handsome and purposeful. If it was a person it’d wear a really expensive suit to cover its incredibly muscular physique. INTERIOR The inside follows the normal Range Rover and the new Sport model’s exterior as well. With high quality materials garnishing every surface your eye can see, and we’re including the floors in that, it’s no wonder why it’s considered one of the best luxury SUVs on the planet. Some people go as far as claiming it’s second only to Bentley and Rolls-Royce, bearing in mind those are cars, that’s an extremely massive accomplishment.

C OV ER STO RY
The new center console is positioned slightly higher, giving the driver more access to the controls and better ergonomics all-around. The center stack in the middle offers extremely appealing satin chrome pillars and even aluminum accents. You won’t find carbon fiber here. It’s as classy and as elegant as an SUV can get. Dignified and composed, without revealing too much of its sporty side save for the few Sport buttons here and there. There are 11 interior color themes to choose from, with an additional choice of seat color for each one of them. Honestly, the amount of customizability Land Rover offers is insane. Get this: 19 exterior paints 3 headliner colors, 4 aluminum interior finishes, 3 contrast roof colors, 3 real wood veneers, etc. The list just goes and on. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE A 3.0 liter V6 brings up the first gasoline engine, producing 340 horsepower, enough to propel the large SUV to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. It’s essentially the same engine as the one found in the F-Type and the new F-Pace. But you know what they say, there is no replacement for displacement. A 5.0 liter V8 supercharged unit packs 510 horsepower and enough torque to pulverize the very road beneath it. It will get the Sport to 100 km/h in a scarcely believable 5 seconds dead (less if you can launch it properly). For an SUV as large as this, that’s borderline frightening.
82 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION The Range Rover Sport is the Range Rover Vogue’s athletic sibling. It may not be as luxurious but it’s a whole lot more dynamically capable. Arguably the best-handling large SUV on the planet, the Sport really is as fun to throw around in the bends as it is to just cruise and eat up the miles in. A truly amazing automobile.

LEXUS LX 570
The story of the Lexus LX570 is a weird one. It started life off as a Toyota Land Cruiser in disguise back in 1995. Lexus needed something to compete with the increasingly more popular luxury manufacturers in the early 1990s, so the only logical choice was to make a large, luxurious SUV. Queue the LX570 and its Land Cruiser underpinnings. The styling received a makeover to make it more Lexus-y, with new badges, a better interior and some drivetrain upgrades.

LEXUS The concept actually worked. For some 20 years they’ve been selling the car as is, and it’s proven to be surprisingly popular over the years. Fast forward some 20 years in to the future however, and you’ll find things haven’t been going so good for Lexus. The fierce competition had no sign of letting down, so with no other option, Lexus decided to introduce some much-needed changes for the 2016 year model. Lexus’ flagship SUV is finally starting to live up to its name. They unveiled it at Pebble Beach Concors d-Elegance, the perfect event when you want to unveil something rare, luxurious and expensive, but its freshly-redesigned GS sedan was sharing its glory. EXTERIOR This isn’t just a small facelift. The LX received thorough and major upgrades back in 2016, bringing the outdated SUV back into the modern era. Only the doors were a direct carryover from the previous generation, and even they were slightly tweaked. At the front you’ll notice it uses Lexus’ by-now traditional spindle grille design. On the large LX, it’s more polarizing than ever, occupying more than half of the entire front end. It’s not what you’d call an elegant or gorgeous design, but it is striking, there’s no doubt about it. In fact, it just might be the boldest design out of all full-size luxury SUVs. It isn’t afraid to show its large size. In all actuality it’s proud of it. Compared to its contemporary rivals, the LX is a breath of fresh air, even if the design isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The massive grille is flanked from both sides by LED headlights with innovative LED daytime running lights and a lower fascia with angular foglights on the bumper’s ends. It’s still a bulky, behemoth of a vehicle, but it’s less boxy than before. The rear gets an overhaul too. Horizontal, almost L-shaped LED lights give the back end some much-needed attitude it was lacking before. A really bold design, but one we’re really fond of. INTERIOR If you thought exterior changes were thorough, wait till you hear the interior ones. Let’s just start with the cabin itself. This has to be the nicest eight-seater to spend time in on the market. First off, the actual room available inside is just ridiculous. There’s ample amount of headroom and legroom in all three rows, with boot space to spare. We’re talking fully-sized adults, something no other SUV can boast.

The seats are comfortable, even if lacking a bit of support, and the materials of the finest variety. You can tell they spared no expense in making the LX’s cabin, from the leather on the seats and panels to the brushed aluminum accents. Then we get to the really good stuff: technology. A 12.3-inch display sits slap bang in the middle of the instrument panel, controlled by a Remote Touch interface mounted on the center console. A bigger gauge cluster gets a brand-new 4.2-inch multi-information display, and at the back passengers can enjoy the advantages offered by 7-inch screens. Oh, let’s not forget the optional head-up display. We’re truly amazed by how well equipped the cabin is. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Lexus has been known to upgrade its models’ interiors and exteriors without even touching the drivetrain, but the LX is a different story. Powered by the old 5.7 liter V8, it now substitutes the dated six-speed auto with a state of the art eight-speed unit. Power rating is the same at 383 hp and 546 Nm of torque. It’s not exactly fast, but it does move along nicely. You won’t win any races but you won’t come in last either, let’s put it that way. Full-time four-wheel drive is the only option, with the maximum towing rating sitting at just over 7,000 pounds.
88 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION The new LX570 is quite possible all the car you’ll ever need. Just think about it. Its new design is actually attractive for once, the cabin is best-in class, it drives good and it won’t depreciate like crazy. These, along with a dozen more reasons are why it’s our Best Multi-Purpose 4x4.

Blend a hybrid powertrain with a medium-sized SUV, add in the most luxurious in-class interior, and a Lexus badge and top, and what do you get? Everyone who said the RX Hybrid is correct. First unveiled at the New York Auto Show in 2015, the RX sort of stole the show, which no one expected. The fourth-gen RX builds upon the previous generation , Lexus’ best-selling model of all time. Quite big shoes to fill then. Mirroring the new NX’s design and indeed, Lexus’ current visual language, it’s a lot more youthful-looking and fresh. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova

LEXUS They might lose some loyal customers because of the change in design, but the increased popularity among the younger crowd is more than worth the trade-off for Lexus. Nothing has been left unchanged. Even the mechanical components have been revised. Coming from a company as conservative as Lexus, that’s really saying something. Then again they went completely mad the last couple of years, upgrading their entire fleet, so who knows what to expect anymore. EXTERIOR We can talk about it all day long, but the truth of the matter is that the RX is not a good-looking car by any standards. Striking? Yes. Bold? Definitely. Beautiful? Not so much. Unless you’re into the weird alien-inspired design, in which case you’ll feel right at home with the Lexus. That said however, it does turn heads wherever it goes. From a crowded boulevard to a traffic-full highway. It’s guaranteed to get you noticed, but not always for the right reasons. Compared to the previous RX, you can’t fault it. You just can’t. It at least tries to be different and innovative in its own, new way, and not copy most contemporary rivals. Say what you will about Lexus, but they’re a company which isn’t afraid to deviate from the norm. No other manufacturer would have even thought of giving their best-selling model such a controversial makeover, but Lexus isn’t one to back down from a challenger. They took the matter into their own hands and came out victorious. Sales of the RX have been steadily climbing, as the SUV’s been picking up more and more popularity over the last couple of months. INTERIOR The insides changes are just as comprehensive as those on the outside. A new design flows thought the dashboard, center console and even door panels, pushing Lexus even further away from their traditional, conservative styling. You want the truth? We really like it. The first redesigned IS featured a similar layout to this one, but you can tell Lexus further developed the concept into something even more amazing. The RX’s interior is so much more than a stretched out NX cabin. For starters, the entire center stack has been redesigned with a rectangular infotainment screen on top. Below two HVAC vets rest along with an analog clock in the middle. Radio control buttons and HVAC controls sit just below that. Just like in the NX (albeit it’s a different design), the center console nets the electronic parking brake, drive mode selector, infotainment controls and gear selector. Surprisingly, the RX uses a joystick design for the infotainment system rather than the new trackpad found in the NX.

According to several sources the trackpad is meant for younger generations which will be purchasing the NX anyway. As the target audience for the RX is slightly older and more mature, the more familiar joystick was the weapon of choice from Lexus. Two different gauge clusters are offered for the RX. The standard model comes with two traditional analog gauges with a TFT display in the middle. F-Sport variants utilize a dynamic gauge cluster much like the one found in the IS 350 F-Sport. Switch it over to sport and the entire digital tacho slides sideways to reveal a separate TFT display (much like the LFA). It’s neat and innovative, something not a lot of vehicles employ. There’s decent amount of headroom and legroom in both rows, but you’ll find it hard to sit three adults across the rear bench. It’s possible, but they won’t be comfortable on longer journeys. That said, this is the perfect car for munching the miles. It just soaks them up. There’s virtually no wind noise, tire noise is non-existent and drivetrain chatter is barely hearable when cruising. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The RX Hybrid uses a 3.5 liter V6 which operates on the efficient Atkinson cycle. Coupled with an electric motor, total power output is around 300 horsepower, which is more than sufficient for the type of vehicle it is. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic which is slick and responsive, but likes to be left in auto and do its own thing. You can change gears yourself, and it’s not so bad in the F-Sport, but you can tell it works best when left completely to its own devices. What really surprised us way the way it behaved on the road. For a medium-sized SUV, which is effectively what it is, it’s really responsive and nimble. We thought the batteries would hinder its dynamic capabilities, but they don’t seem to affect it one bit. It’s just as eager to turn in as the normal version. A really well thought-out and sorted chassis it has to be said. 94 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION No other hybrid on the market offers the same levels of practicality, luxury, performance and even value for money. It’s one the higher end of the hybrids price range, but when you consider what it offers in return, boy does it make sense. For that, it earns our Best Hybrid SUV award.

It’s actually a brand-new model which launched just a couple of years ago, and although Lexus is new to this crossover SUV business, they’ve nailed it right from the get go. Wanting a slice of the pie, they decided to take the plunge and create a small crossover which we now know as the Lexus NX. Although haters will call it just a glorified Toyota RAV4, it’s so much more than that. Yes, it is based on the RAV4’s structure and it carries its underpinnings, but the similarities end there. Unique suspensions components, drivetrain, interior and styling make the NX its own model. Having driven the NX and the RAV4 back to back, we can safely say they perform very differently. EXTERIOR From the outside, the NX is hardly similar to the RAV4. The days of the soft, conservative-looking Lexus models are long gone. Now all of their vehicles feature modern design with aggressive and sporty elements. Take a look at the new NX for instance. It’s so bold and unique that it makes most of its rivals seem bland in comparison. The front Spindle grille completely dominates the front end, occupying some 50 percent of the fascia alone. It completely changes the perception people have of the Lexus brand, giving it a more aggressive and menacing appearance. If this thing pulls up behind you on the highway, you would most definitely get out of its way. Non F-Sport models get a slightly more civilized exterior, with a tucked-in nose somewhat similar to that of the RX. LED low-beam headlights are standard on the NX, but the highs are halogens. The fishhook LED daytime running lights are aesthetically pleasing to look at, and blend well with the fog lights just below them. A short overhang and high approach angle eliminates all fear of smashing into curbs or parking stops and scraping low driveway ramps. It may be a crossover luxury SUV, but Lexus design it to be the perfect urban assault vehicle. The side profile carries the same angular theme, staring with a strong belt line which extends below the windows and a hard accent line along the bottom of the doors. The rear wheel well has a unique kink which complements the windowless C-pillar. The back taillights have the same fishhook design, there’s a high-mounted spoiler and even motorcycle-inspired exhaust exits. They look fairly normal to us, but Lexus says they’ve drawn inspiration for the exhaust pipes from bikes. It’s a weird thing to look at this NX. It’s not inherently beautiful by most standards, but there’s something to it which just draws you in each time you take a look at it. INTERIOR The interior carries the same styling cues as the exterior. The sharp lines and angular crests can be found on the center console, dashboard and even door panels. The immediate feeling you get after getting inside the NX is one of luxury and comfort. maqinaonline.com /OFF-ROAD SPECIAL 99
C OV ER STO RY
It’s not a particularly spacious SUV, especially as it’s filled with so many toys, but it snugs and molds perfectly around you. It’s as if it was made specifically for you. There’s decent amount of room in the front, but the back can get a bit tight if you fit full-sized adults in. Longer journeys are especially problematic if you’re travelling with lots of luggage and five people. That said, this is the perfect car for a family of four. The seats themselves are especially nice and comfortable. They offer tons of lateral support, holding you in place even in the hardest of cornering G-forces. Now then, getting back to the dashboard. The buttons are arranged ergonomically, and the entire layout is intuitive and easy to understand. Instead of the usual joystick for controlling the infotainment system you get a trackpad. It’s much faster and more responsive, but you will need to get used to it if you haven’t used smartphones that often. Once you do however, it’s a joy to use. Two large analog gauges give you speed and rpm, with a smaller displaying coolant and temperature. We really like the interior. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The NX 200t is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 235 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 350 Nm of torque at 1,650 rpm. Although heavily turbocharged, there’s next to no turbo lag originating from the engine. It’s responsive and almost immediate. Front-wheel drive is standard, but you can spec it with an all-wheel drive system if you feel like you need it. Towing capacity is 900 kg and maximum payload 520 kg, but no one’s going to use it to haul anything. The 300h offers 194 horsepower from its 2.5 liter four-cylinder mated with an electric motor, but the instant torque makes it a lot faster than that figure might suggest. It is heavy at just above 2 tons, but you don’t feel the weight most of the time. It’s really well controlled and balanced. There’s a lot of low-end grunt thanks to the electric motor and relatively large four-cylinder. 100 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION If you want a good crossover SUV which also happens to be Lexus, you now have a choice. We still recommend the 200t over the 300h just because of the added power and lower weight. That said, the hybrid is excellent if you want to conserve the environment and save some at the petrol pump.

We first saw the Maserati Kubang concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2011. Although it was a hint that an SUV Maserati was soon coming, no one expected it to arrive just so quickly. Just a few months later however, Maserati confirmed their first ever SUV venture was a reality. At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show we saw the Maserati Levante’s grand entrance, and boy what an entrance it was. M A S E R AT I Leather upholstery is standard, the interior stays true to the Maserati brand and there are all kinds of available options on the spec list. It’s no secret that the Levante is here to single-handedly save the Maserati brand from extinction. The luxury market is shifting from sedans and limos to large SUVs, so it’s small wonder Maserati decided to build a competitor in that segment. It has the BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne as its main rivals, so you could say competition is stiff. However, people who buy Maseratis buy them because they’re Italian, different and offer a very unique and special feel which no other brand gives you. So in that regard, it doesn’t matter how doo the Levante is, because it’s a Maserati. Thankfully however, it’s every bit as good as it looks. EXTERIOR Speaking of looks, let’s start with that exterior. As expected, the design of the Levante isn’t far off that from the Ghibli (they also share the same platform). A Maserati will always beat any other car design-wise, and the Levante is no exception. Its sport lines and aggressive demeanor make even the most muscular of SUVs such as the X6 look downright dull in comparison. Imagine telling someone you own a Maserati SUV over a BMW. Now if that doesn’t bring you cool points alone, we don’t know what does. The design was made in Turin. The front features Trident’s traditional face, with a grille inspired by the famous Alfieri concept. Two air intakes at the lower fascia connect the middle section via a slim cutout just below the grille. Bi-Xenon “feline shaped” headlights come with LED daytime running lights and LED turn signals. The fog lights can be equipped to LED spec should you pay the premium. Creases in the hood give it a downright sexy element, with that Maserati logo on the end of the bonnet telling you everything you need to know about this car. The profile view is just as striking as the front one. A trio of side vents rest just above the front wheel wells. The trapezoidal C-pillar makes it look almost coupe-like, especially with that sloping roofline. The doors are frameless, because it’s a Maserati, and you get a ton of wheel designs to choose from. LED taillights, a small roof spoiler continuing the roofline and quad exhaust tips round off the entire design. There’s no denying it: this IS the best-looking mid-size SUV currently for sale today. You can’t even argue with that. Well, until the Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes out anyway. INTERIOR Once again, the interior takes cues from its sedan siblings. Everything is fairly identical to what you’d find in the Ghibli for instance. From the various controls for the drive modes, the new rotary knob and even the air suspension switch, to the dashboard design and even the door panels. 104 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com

The roof brings Alcantara leather, as do the upper pillars and front sun visors. If ever there was a luxurious midsize SUV, this would be it. It doesn’t even feel like you’re driving in a car. It genuinely feels like you’re sitting in an extremely cozy lounge just relaxing. It just so happens that there’s a steering wheel and some buttons next to you. The high-grade leather is soft and smooth, there are no hard plastics anywhere throughout the cabin and you get excellent adjustability from the seats. There’s a lot of room in both rows, but you will struggle to fit three adults across the back row. An eight-speaker Bose premium audio system takes care of your music needs, with the optional four-zone climate control keeping you cool (or heated) at all times. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Finally, we got to the really good stuff. Sadly, no V8, but it hardly matters once you hear what we have to tell you. The standard Levante comes with a 350 horsepower V6 developing 350 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The spring to 100 km/h takes just 60 seconds, while the top speed figure is 250 km/h. Then we get to the Levante S however, and all hell breaks loose. It makes 430 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and some 580 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. Top speed is 265 km/h and it manages 10.9 liters/100 km. Actually good given the performance on tap. Where the Levante really excels at however are the corners. We haven’t tested it head to head with a BMW X6 M, but it feels like it could give it a run for its money. It corners flat and hard, giving you lots of confidence to push on. It might be a mid-size SUV, but it’s no slouch. It would give most performance cars a hard time shaking it off their tail.
106 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION We tested the Levante in the desert as well, where it exhibited good off-roading capabilities thanks to its all-wheel drive system. Although primarily designed for the road, it proved that it has what it takes to be a true SUV. For that, we crown it our Best Mid-Size Sport Luxury SUV.

The CX-5’s biggest issue was that it joined the compact SUV segment at a time when competition was already fierce and the market crowded as is. Big names and large players like the CR-V, Escape and the RAV4 have already been popular with the people for a decade or so, and the relatively new CX-5 was just getting to grips with the traits of the SUV market. With lots of updates to its exterior, interior and drivetrain, Mazda is really banking on the fact that the new car will deliver. But does it? EXTERIOR On the outside at least, we’re going to have to say yes. The CX-5 was always a good looking car even if slightly conservative. It isn’t as big of a deviation from its traditional Mazda roots as the updated CR-V was, but it’s more than alright. The new facelift model is slightly wider both in the front and the rear, but by a very small amount. The roof is more dome-shaped because Mazda has repositioned the large A-pillars further back, making the front end look longer and sleeker. The side profile gets a few changes, namely in the form of a small concaved area just behind the rear glass area and a concaved section on the lower part of the doors. The lines carry on unchanged. The front grille is slightly larger with a black mesh finish as opposed to the previously weird horizontal slats. The headlights are actually smaller and slimmer, giving the front end a much more proportioned look. The foglights are thinner but wider and there’s a cladding on the front which gives off the illusion that it’s actually a front spoiler, when it’s not. The front is definitely improved. Further back, we see the same thing. Smaller overhang, side flares extending from the sides further than before and a rear glass which is angled forwards more. The taillights get new lens and have gone through the same diet as the headlights, with effectively a slimmer design. The cladding at the bottom has been sized down creating a more sculpted rear end with a chrome exhaust tip on each end rounding off the overall look. INTERIOR At last, we get an updated interior in the CX-5. Mazda finally realized their old dashboard design wasn’t working as well as they thought it was and decided to give us something different, something which suits the overall character of the car much better. The dash is flatter with redesigned HVAC controls, HVAC vents and they have completely eliminated the small and troublesome infotainment display. Instead, it’s been replaced with a brand-new 7-inch unit which now sits on top of the dash rather than inside of it. The steering wheel gets a new look thanks to a different three-spoke design and they’ve just sharpened up the instrument cluster.

A 4.6-inch LCD display plays the role of the information center for the driver and a HUD dubbed “Active Driving Display” gives the driver navigation information. Elsewhere, we don’t see a lot of changes. The interior is just as roomy as it was before, which is excellent, and there’s more than enough entertainment for everyone onboard. You can still find some compromising materials here and there, but the general consensus is that this is a cabin worth every bit the price Mazda is asking for the CX-5. We really appreciated the premium Bose audio system with 10 speakers. It might have been the highlight of the cabin, apart from the excellent comfort and ergonomics. You just don’t expect that level of equipment in this CX-5, so you’re blown away to find it’s actually present. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The CX-5 carries over the same 2 and 2.5 liter Skyactiv engines. The 2 liter four-cylinder produces 155 horsepower and 203 Nm of torque while the larger motor manages 184 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. The car isn’t anywhere as slow as the figures would suggest but it does feel sluggish compared to some of the competition. We expected a new engine with over 200 horsepower, but Mazda apparently decided it wasn’t worth it as not a lot of people are after performance in a car like these. They might be right, but some more power for overtaking and easier cruising never hurts. A six-speed manual is standard but you can opt for a six-speed auto. In all honesty you’re better off with the manual since the six-speed does feel a little bit last-decade compared to the modern eight, nine and even ten speed automatics. The manual is lovely with nice, crisp shifts and good feel. On the plus side it’s fun to throw in the corners, even if it’s lacking in feedback. It’s safe and predictable, exactly what you’d want from an SUV made predominantly for families. 112 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION It won’t win any awards, but it has a lot of potential. It’s still lacking some power for our taste, but it’s a great all-rounder for families looking for something practical, affordable and safe. With a bit more oomph it will be a top contender.

BEST SMALL COMPACT SUV
MAZDA CX3
By Mazda’s research, the compact SUV segment usually fairs better than the mid-size one the CX-5 is located in, so why not go all in and produce crossover as well right? So, they introduced the all-new CX-3 compact SUV. So far, the CX-3 is doing surprisingly well, especially compared to the start the CX-5 had back some five years ago. Aside from the styling and the price difference of around QR 7,000, the only thing setting it apart from its big brother, the CX-5, is the increased fuel efficiency. After its alright start, the CX-3 found its way into many family garages by owners who were looking for something reliable, practical and most importantly , affordable. It turns out the CX-5 is following the CX-3’s footsteps, and not the other way around. For its amazing capabilities and features, as well as the turnaround for Mazda it was able to deliver, the CX-3 is our Best Small Compact SUV winner. EXTERIOR At first glance, it sort of resembles the CX-5, but take a closer look and you’ll notice the differences are quite substantial. Although it uses the same design, the same concept of visual language, the practical implementation of it is much, much different. Mazda’s KODO design is shown off at its best here, blending lots of swoopy character lines and angular creases into one seamless piece of moving art. It’s gorgeous in a way no other Japanese SUV has been before. Sharp headlights, a large open grille, menacing hunkered-down stance, wide footprint, sloping roofline… it has it all. The short overhang at the back makes it look like a heightened hatchback, and with the bubble dome-shaped cabin it reminds you of a fighter-jet if you squint really hard. The back half is somewhat reminiscent of a Lexus NX even. In a world where manufacturers are producing crossover SUVs purely for profit purposes alone, the CX-3 really stands out from the crowd. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the CX-3 is arguably the best crossover currently on the market. One cannot ignore its looks when factoring in all the things a sporty SUV has to offer. We really dig it, and we’re willing to bit most of you lot are too. INTERIOR If ever there was a definition for simplicity, the CX-3’s interior would be it. Elegant, sleek and non-cluttered. The split-dash brings some nice separation between the top and bottom half without distracting you too much from the actual design. The HVAC system with three round air vents is gorgeous, and so is the minimalistic center console. It looks Spartan the first time you get in it, but you soon realize Mazda has cleverly incorporated everything into this intelligent order where the layout just makes sense and the ergonomics are perfect. Take the gauge cluster for instance. A main round pod gives you the tachometer, a smaller digital speedo sits just next to it and a screen opposite that gives you all the relevant driver info. It’s simple, but it works wonders.

There’s no handbrake button. You do it the old fashioned way, with a lever, located right next to you. The manual version gets a shifter with a gate focused on the driver. The infotainment rotary controller knob rests just where your arm does when you’re relaxing. They really have thought of everything, haven’t they? There’s ample amount of room in both rows of seats with plenty of cargo room to spare. It’s no Range Rover, but it does offer class-leading comfort and space. The second row is once again slightly higher than the front seats, giving the rear passengers more visibility. It doesn’t just help them relax, but aids the line-of sight conversation between the front and the rear. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE A 2 liter Skyactiv four-cylinder unit powers the CX-3. It’s good for 155 horsepower and 203 Nm of torque. It’s the same engine as the one found in the CX-5, but we won’t be so hard on it here for one simple reason: in the lighter CX-3 it actually feels fast. Well, when we say fast we mean quick. It’s spritely and willing to rev, and despite not catapulting you into the horizon at a tremendous rate, it does get the relatively light CX-3 going along nicely. Speed freaks will be disappointed by the speed, but who buys a CX-3 for its outright speed? On the bright side, it’s actually really agile. The front end is lively and eager to turn-in, with lots of bite and grip from the tires. You’d be surprised by the amount of G-forces it can pull. It doesn’t weight anything, so there’s nothing to pull it out of line. It’s a fan of slower to medium-speed corners, so think city streets and supermarkets, the places it was designed for anyway. Around town, you’ll struggle to find crossovers offering as much feedback and fun as the CX-3.
118 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION We never thought we’d be saying this, but the CX-3 is the best car in its segment. Surprising isn’t it? Just goes to show what kind of a company Mazda is. Rather than give up, they went back to beginning and came up with what is the best compact crossover. Well done Mazda.

BEST COUPE LUXURY SUV WINNER MERCEDES GLE43 COUPE AMG OFF-ROAD 2017 Mercedes’ GLE class actually started life out as the M-Class back in 1997. The five-door crossover only received two updates since its original debut and the first one came in 2005, some 8 years after the release. The third generation arrived in 2011, after which Mercedes decided it was time for a brand-new model which would be in-line with their updated range. So the M became the GLE, as per the GLC and GL nomenclature. The car revealed at the North American International Auto Show was somewhat similar to the M-Class, but you could tell it had nothing to do with the old car. MERCEDES
maqinaonline.com /OFF-ROAD SPECIAL 121
MERCEDES Queue 2017 and Mercedes ditches the GLE400 and GL450 AMG monikers for a simpler AMG GLE43. It’s the same five-seater performance SUV as the outgoing GLE450 AMG, with the added bonus of minor upgrades in the exterior, interior and drivetrain departments. The GLE43 AMG is a sibling of the slimmer, more youthful GLE43 Coupe. These days Mercedes seems to be slapping the AMG badge on anything even remotely quick, so the question is: can the GLE43 AMG live up to its AMG-derived name? EXTERIOR The standard GLE43 AMG isn’t particularly different to the GLE400 it replaces. It carries over the same styling cues with little to distinguish it. The downturned headlights get LED daytime running lights sitting on top of the housing, with a black mesh grille just between the actual headlights. The lower portion of the bumper has been modified slightly, with larger intakes and a sharper lower lip which hugs the ground tighter. The hood gets the same character lines as the old model, with nicely-shaped crests which accentuate the SUV’s sporty characteristics. It still looks like a sporty, aggressive SUV, but the added changes make it classier and much cleaner. It’s an evolution not a revolution, but we dig it. The shoulder line is the same, and so is the lower character line, but that’s no bad thing. The wheels have a five-spoke design and are offered in 20 or 21-inch version, with the taillights still wrapping into the fenders with horizontal graphics. Here’s where it gets interesting. The normal GLE SUV has a sort-of extended rear section like the M-Class did, the one thing it was famous for. It offers a separated glass piece with a large C-pillar and a relatively flat roofline. It is for all intents and purposes a practical, luxurious five-seater SUV from Mercedes. The Germans are best at finding niche segments however, and Mercedes probably the best at it. Although they already had the GLC Coupe, they managed to squeeze another one in there: the GLE Coupe. As you can imagine, it offers one major difference: its rear end. The roofline starts sloping downwards from the middle, whereas it continued straight in the normal SUV. It ends where the boot does with a small lip spoiler, before dipping into the taillights and mid-section chrome strip connecting them both. It might not sound like a lot on paper, but it makes a world of difference in real life. Although the front end is the same, the back half makes them look like completely different cars. INTERIOR Inside they’re pretty much a carryover from the old GLE400. The cabin is a copy/paste if we’ve ever seen one, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. No one’s ever criticized this car’s interior, so it’s small wonder Mercedes decided to retain everything as is. 122 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com

The wheel offers a good three-spoke design and plenty of grip thanks to the leather wrapped around it and the brushed metal, the gauge cluster is clear and easy to understand while the controls are where you’d expect them to be. Everything seems in order, just like it should in a luxury SUV from Mercedes. The 8-inch display is the only letdown of the entire cabin, but it’s not down-right bad. The Harman Kardon Logic7 premium audio system on the other hand is a thing to behold. The optional Bang & Olufsen BeoSound is better, but there’s no need for it honestly. If you like the GLE Coupe, prepare to sacrifice some headroom and legroom. Not for you as the driver but for the rear passengers. It’s still spacious, but the Coupe definitely lacks the headroom the GLE SUV offers. There’s slightly less room for luggage too, courtesy of that roofline. If you can live with that however, the benefit of a gorgeous Coupe line is more than worth it. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE A 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged V6 unit with an all-aluminum construction and double overhead cam design is in charge of propelling this beast at unruly speeds. It makes 362 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque, a decent amount for its size. The sprint to 100 km/h takes around 5 seconds, with the top speed naturally being limited to 155 miles per hour just like in the competitors. Speaking of competition, there’s really not a lot which can go up against the Coupe version. The standard GLE yes, there’s the X5 and the Cayenne, but they’re not really competitors for the GLE Coupe. The engine is mated to a nine-speed 9G Tronic automatic, and while not as sophisticated as a double-clutch, it works just fine. Both versions of the GLE offer the same amount and level of dynamic capabilities. It’s pretty competent in the corners, but it isn’t a sports car that’s for sure. We actually tested it in the dunes in Qatar, where it performed better than expected. 124 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
It looked out of place, but its pace and capabilities exceeded what everyone thought it would do. It didn’t get stuck once and it was genuinely fun to throw around. CONCLUSION The GLE SUV falls somewhat short of the expectations, but that’s where the Coupe iteration comes in to save the day. Despite the fact that it takes away some of the GLE’s practicality, the far better design and lines make it the better choice. It’s got enough power to be a truly sporty SUV as well. For that, it earns our Best Coupe Luxury SUV award with ease, coming in at a comfortable first place.

The Pajero is perhaps the most underrated robust SUV in the history of the segment. Think of reliable, durable SUVs which can go through virtually anything and you’re probably thinking about a Land Rover Defender or Toyota’s Land Cruiser, or perhaps even the Hilux. Very few people think of the Mitsubishi Pajero right away, and for a good reason. Mitsubishi never really advertised their vehicle as much as the competition did, which blows our mind since it was a genuine rival back then, and it still is. By: Tarek Hawchar

MITSUBISHI
maqinaonline.com /OFF-ROAD SPECIAL 127
MITSUBISHI Why didn’t Mitsubishi choose to give bigger priority to their marketing department is beyond us. The very first Pajero was released in 1982, but it wasn’t until the third and fourth generation debuting in 1999 and 2006 respectively that it started attracting the larger crowds. Although a lot of markets have since discontinued the traditional Pajero which is in production from 2006, and substituted it with the Montero (which is still called Pajero in certain markets), the lovable and by now well-known Pajero is still alive and kicking. It’s been in production for over 11 years, with next to no changes, but it was so well-built and ahead of its rivals back in the day that it has no trouble keeping up with sale requirements to this very day. Its last upgrade was in 2015 when it received a couple of exterior facelift elements and new interior details and materials. EXTERIOR The exterior has mostly kept the design it had back in 2006. As mentioned, it received a couple of upgrades most notably the front fascia facelift which brought LED daytime running lights and xenons, along with a small bumper revision, but other than that it’s the same old Pajero. If you’re into changes that might bother you, but in all fairness the Pajero was never one to boast with an aggressive or sporty design. It looked like a box on wheels when it came out, so it’s okay that it looks like one now as well. It’s simple and understated, no one would look at it twice, which is kind of the point. With an extremely short front overhand, the amount of angle the Pajero can achieve without bottoming out is dead-on impressive. The rear isn’t as short, but it’s still alright. The general philosophy here is one where form follows function, not the other way around, so it’s not surprising why Mitsubishi hasn’t changed the design. If it works, leave it as it is. It’s like an old, expensive but functional watch this Pajero. It works today exactly like it did ten years ago when it was first made. You could even argue that the fact it kept as close to its roots as possible has made it that much better and more special. INTERIOR The interior is where the Pajero both excels and falls short of in expectations. It excels because there’s a vast amount of cabin space even for seven adults. The boxy shape means you have loads of headroom and legroom, with boot space to spare. The bad news is that the materials used in the cabin and the technology isn’t up to par with most modern SUVs.

That said however, it isn’t bad, it just isn’t as good as some of its competitors. Does it bother us? Not in the slightest. The rest of the car is so good the materials are only a slight complaint and are perfectly livable with on a day to day basis. There’s 1038 liters of cargo capacity with the third row removed, a figure which increases to 1758 liters if you fold both back rows flat. The seats are comfortable and it’s actually a decent journey vehicle, eating up the kilometers with relative ease. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE 3.8 liter 24-Valve V6 SOHC Mivec unit with 250 horsepower it’s a real powerhouse. It’s responsive, torquey and capable of decent acceleration. The Pajero excels at towing capacity. It can haul 3000 kilograms with a braked trailer and 750 kg with an unbraked one. Payload capacity is 775 kilograms. CONCLUSION Its ability to comfortably seat seven people, haul a lot of stuff and tow even the heaviest of loads makes it our Best Seven Seater 4x4. With a soft ride it’s great on the road, and the four-wheel drive system makes sure it doesn’t get stuck even in the harshest of trails or dunes. It’s the weapon of choice for both off-road enthusiasts and large families. A must-drive before purchasing any other seven-seater definitely. It will blow any misconceptions you have about it being outdated.

MI T SUB I SH I
The bigger seven-seater Pajero is essentially to Mitsubishi what the Range Rover is to Land Rover. With that said, let’s get right into why the Montero S is a great proposal for anyone after a car of its size and stature. Although the name uses the letter “S” or even the full-blown Sport moniker in certain markets, don’t expect an Evo-upgrade to the Montero. There are a couple of legitimately large updates which it brings, but it’s by no means a sporty SUV. It’s nothing like a BMW X5 M for example. That fact aside, it’s actually a brilliant multi-purpose vehicle. It’s more comfortable, practical and refined than before, so we guess the big question here is if it can offer what the old car did but with a hint more refinement? EXTERIOR The outside would suggest that yes, it can. Mitsubishi made a genuine effort to design the Montero with more modern and youthful elements and cues. We hate to admit it but it does look graceful and sporty. It’s got all sorts of weird lines, crests and shapes, with an almost alien-like appearance, but it is unique, there’s no denying that. It’s not a beautiful car in the way an Evoque is, but the weirdness and quirkiness of it make it appealing to the unsuspecting passer-by. Like we said, it almost looks alienated, too different to the rest of Mitsubishi’s lineup. The new body is less utilitarian and more car-like. It’s predominantly aimed at cheaper markets, where cars aren’t as well styled as it is, but the fact that Mitsubishi put in the effort to give it a new look for the rest of the market as well really bodes high for us. You’re free to disagree with us of course, but we find the Montero S to be an appealing SUV. INTERIOR The interior sadly isn’t as good as the exterior. Mitsubishi cut some corners to make the Montero cheaper and it shows in the quality of the cabin. It’s alright and can pass even by today’s standards, but it’s definitely a bit last-generation. Take the materials for instance. The fabric feels like something you’d find on a cheaper Mitsubishi city car, while the plastics are just downright low-grade. The fit and finish is actually pretty decent, we’ll give them that. They managed to incorporate and use the bad materials they got just nicely, but even then the fact remains that there are far nicer cabins than the Montero’s. Some interiors manage to pull-off an expensive look with very little effort and money, but we’re afraid to say the Montero’s isn’t one of those.

The bright side is that there is a lot of space inside for all three rows of seats. Granted, the rear row can only fit smaller children comfortably, but that doesn’t negate the fact that there’s a lot of space, even for the luggage. We still wouldn’t be put off by this slight complaint however. We’re just nit-picking here. The interior is decent but not comparable to most rivals, that’s all we’re saying.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The Montero S is offered with three different engines, although one is only reserved for the Qatar market. First off there is the older 4D56 MIVEC unit with 136 horsepower and 314 Nm of torque. It’s the slowest of the three, but good on fuel economy. Then there’s the 4N15 MIVEC with Variable Geometry Turbo, developing 181 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. It’s the most popular choice in the Montero S. It returns good fuel economy, is strong enough to pull the large SUV, can tow and carry a decent amount of payload, and offers Mitsubishi’s stellar reliability and reputation. A 6531 3.0 liter V6 with 230 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 291 Nm of torque at 4750 rpm is available in Qatar and the Middle East, as previously mentioned. The unit, in our opinion, is far stronger than both diesels. It pulls like a train and the mountain of torque makes sure it can climb and carry stuff comfortably. Okay so it returns worse fuel economy, but that’s the tradeoff between an economical diesel and performance-oriented petrol. Always has been, always will be, you can’t change it.
136 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION The Montero S is a good SUV if you’re okay with its below-average interior. It doesn’t win any awards but it’s a great choice nonetheless. The V6 unit we recommend makes it even reasonably quick and pleasant to listen to. There are far better options out there, but none of them are as affordable as the Montero S is. It’s a game of cat and mouse really. You can spend more on a more-expensive truck or you can get the Montero, which will in truth do everything any other truck will, and save yourself some cash.

NISSAN XTRAIL
The first generation X-Trail wasn’t exactly the best SUV to look at. For lack of a better wording it was boxy and just dull. Nissan realized that no matter how good it was underneath, people wouldn’t be able to see past the uninspiring looks, so rather fortunately they decided to give it a large makeover in 2014. A brand-new generation of X-Trail debuted, along with tons of updates and a more modern design.

NISSAN According to Nissan, the X-Trail is the perfect SUV blending in off-road capabilities, on-road refinement and everyday drivability. The question is, can it actually compete with the rest of the SUV lineup, given how many of them are brilliant? To find out we decided to drive one in Qatar and decide for ourselves. This is the full review. EXTERIOR From the outside the new X-Trail needs no introduction. Or you could say it does, depending on how you look at things, because this one model is a complete departure from the old one. It’s instantly recognizable as a Nissan because of the design language used (similar to Qashqai and Murano), but it’s a far cry from the old box of a car which the X-Trail used to be. It seems to offer the right amount of aggression and sportiness mixed in with some much needed elegance and refinement. Just like the Qashqai the new X-Trail sits on the Common Module Family platform, which is a joint venture between Renault and Nissan. This is, for all intents and purposes, a brand-new car, not just a facelift of the old generation. Much like most of the large SUVs these days, the X-Trail’s styling is leaning more towards a crossover rather than the full-on body on frame trucks. What we’re trying to say is it looks more car-like, and that’s a good thing. Although capable, no one used the last generation X-Trail for off-roading. A few people did, but most drove them on the road, and it’ll be the same story with the new one. Except this time it’s prepared for it. The headlights get an angular design and feature LED technology, while the front and rear bumpers get smoothened out. It gets a few chrome elements here and there, and although we’re not massive fans of overusing chrome pieces, they’ve done so tastefully here. The front fascia is much more modern and fresh, and we’re really glad Nissan decided on such a big step as revising the entire car. The profile view carries unchanged, with the same sloping roofline and streamlined curvy side panels. It’s not just one big slab of metal, but rather a flowing piece with crests and all sorts of angles. At the back you might notice the taillights have been pushed outwards and no longer hinder the hatch. It gives off the illusion that the car is larger than it actually is, while maintaining its rather compact size. Speaking of size, the X-Trail grew slightly but most of that went into increasing the wheelbase for more cabin space. INTERIOR As nice as the exterior updates were, you’ll be spending all of your time inside the cabin, and let’s be real, who wouldn’t sacrifice some exterior styling for interior comfort?

PERFECT FOR A LARGER FAMILY OR SOMEONE LOOKING INTO A GREAT, AFFORDABLE SUV
Nissan shares the same values, so they’ve increased the cabin quality at least threefold. It’s not so much so the materials or even the ergonomics, but the fit and finish. You can’t help but feel like you’re in a car and not an SUV. The old X-Trail had a spartan interior with cheaper materials and a shoddier build-quality, but not so with the new generation. It’s as good if not better than most of Nissan’s car lineup. Like we mentioned, the wheelbase is longer so it offers even more space inside. When you consider the fact that the old model never lacked any, you can begin to imagine how roomy the X-Trail feels now. There’s ample amount of legroom and headroom in all three rows (it’s a seven-seater), and with plenty of infotainment features to keep everyone satisfied. An excellent product by Nissan, we have to admit. It’s refined, comfortable and should you spec it with the optional features, dare we say it even uber-luxurious. It’s no Rolls-Royce but for its segment it’s superb. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Although offered with various Renault dci diesel units and turbocharged petrols across Europe and the U.S., in Qatar the only engine available is the 2.5L unit with 170 horsepower and 234 Nm of torque petrol. The stats don’t seem that impressive on paper, but trust us, it’s more than capable of pulling the relatively compact body around. There’s a decent amount of torque, which is always good when off-roading and overtaking, and because it’s a smaller capacity unit, it doesn’t use a lot of fuel. On the open road the X-Trail feels comfortable and isolated. Wind, road and noise levels have been kept at a minimum, making it one of the best long-journey SUVs we’ve tested. It handles the corners okay, and although it’s not a full-on off-roader, it doesn’t mind the occasional trail or sand dune blast. It’s really fun. 142 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION Would more power hurt it? Absolutely not. But it isn’t a necessity. It’s still a great vehicle, perfect for a larger family or someone looking into a great, affordable SUV.

NISSAN PATROL NISMO
NISMO, Nissan’s performance arm, has been modifying and tuning high-performance Nissan vehicles since forever. In charge of making the fastest models that much faster still, they’ve been doing an excellent job with the GT-R and the 370Z. They tend to go a little mad sometimes though, and nowhere was this more apparent than in the crazy Juke-R. What they did was essentially take a GT-R drivetrain with full underpinnings, modify a Juke body to fit on top, and off it went.

NISSAN
“ PEOPLE ARE MESMERIZED BY IT, AS THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT CAN TELL IT’S SOMETHING DIFFERENT
146 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
”
NISSAN Essentially a rocket on wheels, the what was supposed to be a one-off turned into a short-production run of 3-5 cars for wealthy customers. With the likes of the Note and Pulsar receiving the Nismo treatment in certain markets, it seems it’s only a matter of time before every Nissan product gets NISMO-fied. Well the current “victim” is the company’s large flagship SUV, the Patrol. Before you get too excited, let us immediately tell you that it doesn’t actually use any GT-R components. This means no crazy twin-turbocharged V6 or clever traction control, but we guarantee it’s most definitely a bonkers Nismo product. Before we delve deeper into the engine specifics you all want to hear, let’s examine the outside and inside. EXTERIOR From the outside, it doesn’t take an enthusiast to notice it’s a Nismo edition Patrol. The black and red paint do give it away, but with other colors available such as white, you can’t tell it apart from a high-end Patrol unless you know what to look out for. It’s for sure a striking vehicle though. It has all the presence and character of a Nismo product, but don’t expect any sort of sportiness from the exterior. The dimensions alone don’t allow us to call it sporty, even if it turns out to have 2000 horsepower under the hood. It’s just too tall, wide and long to be even remotely a sporty item. That said, it doesn’t look half bad, it actually means business from the outside. It gets a revised front bumper which is inspired by the GT-R’s and 370Z’s bumpers, a humongous intake, vertical gills and even horizontal LED daytime running lights. New skirts decorate the sides, and it’s worth mentioning that it sits on larger 22-inch Rays alloys. It’s been slightly lowered for a more aggressive stance, but you wouldn’t notice just by looking at its height. It’s not for everyone, especially since it does tend to attract a fair amount of attention everywhere it goes, but it is cool. People are mesmerized by it, as they don’t know what it is but can tell it’s something different. INTERIOR Inside it gets the usual Nismo treatment too. The actual design on the dashboard, center stack, and so on, hasn’t changed, but it gets premium materials and a better fit and finish. The leather seats are especially comfortable and pleasant to spend time in, particularly since they offer a lot of lateral support as well, which wasn’t something we were expecting if we’re honest. The rest of the cabin gets black wood inserts on the dash, door panels and even center console.

THE OVERALL DRIVING EXPERIENCE IS WHAT THE NISMO PATROL OFFERS. IT’S AN EVOLUTION, NOT A REVOLUTION
The regular instrument cluster was replaced in favor of a Nismo-specific unit, fitted with the must-have red rev counter. Loaded with rear TV screen, ventilated seats and a top-of-the-line infotainment system, you can’t really fault it. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Under the hood you’ll find the same 5.6 liter V8 as the regular Patrol, but in this tune it develops more power. How much more? Considering the regular Patrol makes 400 and the Nismo 428 horsepower, we’d say that’s a fair increase of 28 hp. It may not seem like a lot on paper, but Nismo has done more than just increase the power figures. You can feel it has a lot more grunt low down and is more willing to rev higher in the rev range, compliments of the host of upgrades they’ve done to extract that power out of it. It’s much more usable now. Stand on the throttle and the thing just catapults into the horizon. If we’re being honest it’s not as fast as something like a BMW X6 M or even a Range Rover Sport SVR, but it is plenty fast. While those SUVs can reach 100 km/h in under 5 seconds (which feels totally bizarre and unnatural in such a large vehicle by the way), the Patrol can do it in a much more leisurely 7.3 seconds. It’s still fast, trust us. When you’re driving a near as makes no difference 3-ton SUV, you’ll begin to understand how fast a sub 8-second run to 100 really feels. The overall driving experience is what the Nismo Patrol offers. It’s an evolution, not a revolution. The power increase along with the new Bilstein shocks and sport-tuned power steering completely dominate the way the Patrol behaves on the road. It’s still on the leery side, as any large SUV would be, but it’s controllable and confidence-inspiring. It can still go off-road, but given the added price premium and the fact it’s lower with more fragile body parts, we’d put that off-roading adventure if we were you. 148 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION It’s not as fast as an X6 M, but it’s a better all-rounder. You can still do the same things you would in a regular Patrol, so it hasn’t lost any of its practicality or capabilities. In fact, Nismo has added a whole set of other values it now offers in addition to the standard ones it came with.

BEST OFF-ROAD 4X4 WINNER TOYOTA LAND CRUISER OFF-ROAD 2017 The Toyota Land Cruiser can trace its roots back to 1951 and the original, Mark 1 Land Cruiser. At that point it wasn’t even called a Land Rover, but it set the base principles for all Land Rovers today: reliability, durability and ruggedness. It’s one of the longest-producing cars in the world, and certainly one with a massive following of loyal fans and enthusiasts. It lacked some refinement and comfort in the olden days, but since the 120 Series back in the mid-2000s Toyota has really stepped up its game and started making a truck capable of being daily driven. By: Tarek Hawchar | Photos: Natali Leonova
maqinaonline.com /OFF-ROAD SPECIAL 151
T OYO TA The newest iteration of it just so happens to be the best one yet. For 2016 it received a new eight-speed automatic transmission, giving it better acceleration, as well as new safety features (front collision avoidance system, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, etc.) It’s not a full-on modern-day interpretation of what the most capable Land Cruiser was always all about. On the technology side of things it gets a revised Entune infotainment system with Siri Eyes Free technology, wireless phone charging and a brand-new dual-screen rear-seat infotainment system. EXTERIOR It’s a Land Cruiser, so there’s not much to see. The redesigned version gets a new front fascia, with a large grille decorated with the massive Toyota logo in the middle, projector-style headlights and chrome extensions entering the headlight housings from the grille. The lower portion of the bumper is plain and simple, with just two foglights on each side of the bumper. The front and rear overhangs are short, especially the front one, allowing for huge arrival and departure angles. There’s not much to see from the side. It’s just a traditional 7-seater shape, but it just might be the best one. There’s a little crest at the lower portion of the front and rear doors, transitioning nicely into the wheel arches at both ends. The back is just as plain-looking. The redesigned taillights give better signalization to other road users at night, but there’s just not a lot to see. A chrome strip extending all the way across the trunk hatch connects the lower portions of the taillights, with two reflecting lights resting just beneath it. It’s definitely understated and discrete, but that’s no bad thing in a large SUV like the Land Cruiser. A great contemporary design, but slightly conservative from Toyota’s side if we’re honest. Something with a bit more flare and character wouldn’t hurt its discreteness. INTERIOR With just a single trim-level, the Land Cruiser comes packed with all the goodies. We’re talking 18-inch wheels, automatic LED headlights as well as running lights, foglights, automatic wipers, LED taillights, keyless ignition, keyless entry, etc. On the inside you get a four-zone climate control (automatic, complete with separate control for both the second and third rows of seats), memory settings for the driver, a 50/50 split on the rear seats, leather upholstery wood trim and a cooler box in the center console. On the technology front it comes with adaptive cruise control, parking sensors for the front and rear, a rearview camera, “multi-terrain monitor” off-road camera with selectable views (front, side and rear), a navigation system with a huge 9-inch touchscreen complete with interface and voice controls, and last but not least wireless phone charging. 152 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com

These are just the more recent novelties. It also offers the usual stuff such as dual-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment and a premium JBL sound system with, get this, 14 speakers. Talk about factory equipment. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Powered by the same 5.7 liter V8 engine, it develops a rather large 381 horsepower and 543 Nm of torque. Mated to the new eight-speed auto, the Land Cruiser actually moves along at a decent pace on the road. You do have to occasionally mash the accelerator pedal more than you’d expect to get the acceleration you need, but it’s there should you need it definitely. With full-time four-wheel drive, needless to say the Land Cruiser can do anything and go virtually anywhere. It’s the ultimate take you everywhere vehicle, and just so happens to be a perfect one-car option. Underneath, it hides a locking center diff, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (it adjusts the stabilizer bars for on or off-road use electronically), Multi-Terrain Select (individually sets up the traction and stability control system for specific surfaces), a five-speed crawl control (cruise control of sorts, but for low speeds), and last but not least Off-road Turn Assist with hill-start assist. Maximum towing capacity stands at 3674 kilograms, which is more than 3.5 tons. We really can’t see how the Land Cruiser can do wrong. At this point you’d expect us to say it’s a bit sloppy in the corners, but the truth of the matter is it isn’t. It does roll around yes, but it’s predictable. The comfortable and compliant ride just absorbs all the bumps and road imperfections, leaving you with a buttery-smooth ride. We really like it.
154 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION Once you drive a Land Cruiser, you understand why people like them so much. They’re virtually indestructible. You’re left with the impression that the car will far outlive 2 or 3 owners, let alone one. There’s a reason they’re so popular all over the world, even in battle fields and war zones, and it’s because they’re so durable and reliable.

BEST SAFETY SUV
VOLVO XC90
The XC90 is Volvo’s best selling, most popular vehicle, and for a good reason. The increase in SUV popularity from the early 2000s to this very day has been overwhelming. They’ve almost trumped the sedan and hatchback together in terms of sale figures. Seeing as how virtually every manufacturer launched at least one SUV model in the last 5 years or so, the XC90 was getting on a bit in 2016 and started showing its age. “ THEY COMPLETELY REDESIGNED IT ALMOST FROM THE GROUND UP, EFFECTIVELY GIVING US A BRAND-NEW MODEL”
158 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
V O LV O Sales were going down, and Volvo decided that was the last straw. They completely redesigned it almost from the ground up, effectively giving us a brand-new model. The styling is different, it’s got a better interior and the drivetrain has been reworked. All in all, as big of a difference in generation gaps as generation gaps go. EXTERIOR The second-generation CX90 is a far cry from the previous generation SUV, at least styling wise. It’s still instantly recognizable as a Volvo, but is much more youthful looking. The front fascia was completely restyled and incorporates a new design, with a wider and taller grille extending all the way to the apron, with so-called “Thor’s Hammer” headlights. They incorporate LED daytime running lights and are much slimmer than before. The bumper has been integrated into the one-piece fascia, but gets a different air dam layout with a single large inlet flanking two side vents. The entire thing is highlighted by chrome trims. Small inlets can be found at the lower apron as well. At the back they’ve kept the same, traditional taillight design but made them significantly more modern. They’ve been slimmed down and redesigned to fit into the tailgate’s mid section. The actual tailgate itself offers a much more intricate design which mixes with the new taillights beautifully. A revised bumper with much smoother edges also makes an appearance, and it incorporates the dual exhaust configuration (one on each side). The sides feature a pronounced beltline, revised wheel arches and a different character line. Volvo has been trying to get rid of the first-generation’s excessive bulk, and we’d be entitled to say they did a fantastic job based on what we’re seeing. Interior Then you climb inside and any doubt regarding its legitimacy as the number one luxury SUV you may have had is immediately dispersed. It’s just such a nice place to be in. There’s soft Nappa leather everywhere, with slabs of wood trim highlighting and accentuating the important bits. To give you an idea of just how much thought and effort Volvo spent into making this cabin, consider this: the gear level is made out of crystal and Volvo employed Swedish glass manufacturer Orrefors to create it. If having a gear lever made out of crystal is not brag-worthy, we don’t know what is anymore. Because Volvo started using a Scalable Product Architecture, i.e. a lot of the stuff can be shared between platforms and models, even SUVs and hatchbacks, the XC90 has been made incredibly reliable and safe. Interior space has gone up considerably, and we shouldn’t even mention the safety systems on offer for you to know it’s currently one of the, if not the, safest cars on the planet. maqinaonline.com /OFF-ROAD SPECIAL 159

FAMED FOR ITS INNOVATIONS, SAFETY, RELIABILITY AND PRACTICALITY, THE XC90 NOW OFFERS PERFORMANCE AND LOOKS TO MATCH
Advanced passive and active safety technologies like automatic braking, collision mitigation and pedestrian warnings is all included of course. Getting on to the actual interior, just a single word is enough to fully describe it: quality. The fit and finish is out of this world, it genuinely feels like it would last a century or more. The seats are supportive but comfortable. One could easily see how doing hundreds of miles per day in the XC90 would feel like absolutely nothing at all. It’s just so effortless. There’s no road noise, you can hardly get engine noise and the wind noise is at a minimum. You’d have t sit in a sound-deadening chamber to hear less outside noises. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The big news of course is the hybrid drivetrain introduction. Called the T8 Hybrid, it uses a 2-liter turbocharged and supercharged (effectively twincharged) unit and an 80 horsepower electric motor in combination to produce a total of 400 horsepower and 472 Nm of torque. You can drive it purely on the electric motor alone for 30 kilometers or so, which isn’t bad considering how large and heavy it is. You can easily do a round way commute in most medium-sized cities on electricity alone. The supercharger is used to complement the lower end, providing low-down grunt for most city situations, whereas the larger turbocharger spools up once you get the revs higher, giving you all that glorious horsepower. The gasoline engine lineup consists of two models: T5 Turbo and T6 Turbo. Both use the same 2.0 liter twincharged engine only, without the electric motor, with the former outputting 254 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque and the latter 316 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. They’re more than capable of propelling the large XC90 towards the horizon at adequate pace. 160 OFF-ROAD SPECIAL / maqinaonline.com
CONCLUSION With the recent XC90 update, Volvo is back at the top producing one of the best SUV on the market. Famed for its innovations, safety, reliability and practicality, the XC90 now offers performance and looks to match.
