Drive around this small Lorne Park enclave and you would never know you are actually in Mississauga. The streets of the exclusive White Oaks of Jalna neighbourhood feel almost like country lanes. The narrow roadways are surrounded by mature trees, luscious lawns of green grass and birds chirping in the trees. That is exactly why Yvonne and her husband Andrew decided on this neighbourhood. “My husband fell in love with the lot,” Yvonne says, and rightly so. It is a considerably large lot in this mature community. There are still some older homes mixed with newer custom builds. However, one thing that hasn’t changed is the old friendly feel of community in this neighbourhood. Yvonne and Andrew worked with architect Mike Pettes and Ozzie Catalano and John Vucina of Camilla Homes to create their custom home. “We got into this process not knowing what we were doing,” says Yvonne. “That is why it was so important to work with an experienced design and build team that would be able to create a house that is exactly what we wanted.” The biggest piece of the puzzle was the designer. Yvonne says they brought in a designer even before they started planning the house. Tania Parkyn and her interior design team at Parkyn Design were instrumental in translating Yvonne’s vision for the home into reality. The house has a warm and friendly cottage exterior that blends into its wooded surroundings. With the light beige and grey stone façade, the home has a grand presence but isn’t overdone. Once inside the large wood front door, you immediately notice the clean lines of the home that lend itself to a contemporary feel. Yvonne says her favourite part of the house is the first floor, because it was designed with family and entertaining in mind. The rooms all feature gorgeous reclaimed knotty wood floors and feature planks of various lengths and widths adding character and a unique touch. Yvonne says all the knots, grooves and grain of the old wood adds the kind of depth and richness they were looking for. Continued on page 30 o u r h o m e s

ABOVE: Above: The kitchen has a contemporary urban feel with its clean lines and white and black contrasting features, including the striking mouldings around the windows by Pella. LEFT: The formal dining room features one of the many spectacular light fixtures found throughout the home.
Typical of Parkyn and her attention to every detail, the ceilings are far from the basic flat surface. Overhead, most rooms have a dropped ceiling, painted a rich brown, mimicking the dark wood on the floors and distinctive lighting fixtures. It immediately draws your eye up, creating an elegant drama. Since Parkyn was involved with the project from the ground up they were able to work in these unique features before construction started. The colour palette of the house is neutral but still eye-catching with a subtle play of light and dark. Throughout the house, the walls are light cream, but each space has an element of dark, whether it’s the dark surround of a fireplace by Horrocks & Co, or the black chandelier in the front piano room. The galley-style kitchen features white floor-to-ceiling custom cabinets by Bellini Custom Cabinetry. A backsplash in white subway tile is juxtaposed against stark black antique honed granite by Marble Trend. Yvonne says a bonus of building a custom home is designing rooms for the whole family. Yvonne got her two daughters involved in the process. “Even though they are only seven and nine, they got to pick what they wanted,” says Yvonne. “For example, since each bedroom has its own en suite, they both wanted to pick their fixtures.” Continued on page 32 30

BELOW: The master bedroom offers a restful retreat with a little glitz and glamour.
The master bedroom is distinctly different from the rest of the house and is a real sanctuary for Yvonne and her husband. “It is a place where we like to watch television at night; a place for us to relax,” says Yvonne. It has a feminine, glitzy feel, very reminiscent of Art Deco, with a lot of black and crystal. The room features a large dressing area and walk-in closet, but the real show stopper of the room is the en suite bathroom and its beautiful soaker tub and large, two-person shower. The basement of this home has a casual feel and is perfect for entertaining family or having play dates. A wet bar, home theatre and the family’s ping pong table are prominent features. Yvonne laughs and says they love to come down, spend time together and play as a family. Also hidden away in the basement is the true pièce de résistance of this house: the golf simulator. Yvonne and Andrew made room in the house design specifically for this space, with a sunken floor to accommodate their powerful swings. It’s a perfect room to practice their game, all year round. “It all turned out great,” says Yvonne. So great, in fact, she says that she would do it all again. She says they couldn’t have asked for a better team to work with and in the end they got exactly what they wanted. OH
