Central Idea: The use of power has consequences that affect relationships and access to opportunities.

What attitudes do we want the students to demonstrate?

LINES OF INQUIRY What is the focus of our inquiry? • The effects of power on the behavior of people • The consequences of the actions of those with power • How peace and conflict are managed globally

TEACHER QUESTIONS • What is power? • What is the cost of power?

Tolerance - Take into account that differences in opinions exist and that positions leadership can be misused Empathy - Develop an understanding of the perspectives of others who may not have the same amount of power

Attributes of the Learner Profile What attributes of the Learner Profile do we want students to exemplify? Principled - Stand up for injustice during instances where power is abused Thinker - Reflect on instances when power is misused and and analyze varying perspectives

SKILLS What transdisciplinary skills will students acquire and practice during this unit? Communication Viewing - interpreting and analyzing how power is represented in visuals/multimedia. In response, students will be learning to make informed choices about personal viewing experiences. Presenting - Information and ideas will be presented in a variety of forms (multimedia, written). Thinking Dialectical thought - Students will look at events from two or more perspectives and construct arguments from both. Social Adopting a variety of roles - Through roleplay and group work, students will understand the roles of leaders and followers. Technology Investigating - Using technology to research/ investigate examples of power, peace and conflict strategies. Assessing the validity of online sources. Communicating - On student blogs, sharing personal feelings about the effects of power

CONCEPTS Key Concepts Function - Understanding how peace and conflict situations are managed globally. Connection - Understanding the effects and consequences that power may have on individuals and societies

Related Concepts Power - Identifying the characteristics of power and how it is exercised. Consequences - Analyzing the negative (and positive?) effects of power on others

SUCCESS CRITERIA FOR THIS UNIT OF INQUIRY Students will understand that: •Access to opportunities are not the same for everyone •Power can be used in positive and negative ways Students will know: •Subject specific vocabulary •Examples of the use of power in everyday and global situations

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP AT HOME? ✤ Facilitate discussions at home about examples of

the misuse of power ✤Provide opportunities for your child to read newspapers and magazines ✤Talk to your child about different peace and conflict strategies within the home and broader community
