Eu parti feroz de casa com sacas. sanduiches. garrafas. rAdio-de -pilha. estojo de pronto -socorro. blus~o levinho. bermudas e chinelos. entradas presas por um alfineta de fralda na cue ca. jA meio de porre. discutindo com a minha mulher por causa do atraso. cigarros de reserva. ventarola. papel higi~nico extra. escova de dentes - tudo em cima pra assistir ao grande. ao monumental desfile.

E quando achei rneu setor. levei 0 maior susto: nao tinha urn carioca.

Dava pra ouvir pedac;os de conversas, uai daqui. oui dali. yes de IA. mas papo carioca no duro. coisa de muito siso junto com muito riso, neca .

Disfarcei minha inquietac;ao, tomei uns goles. ensaiei com uma francesinha um 7ai perdu ma plume ... ". goze; 0 cara do mate (pau-de-arara), ate que vi 0 rnalandro embromando os guardas. Moreno, nem alto nem baixo. bem-humorado mais meio cetico. tava de camisa do Flamengo, anel de sao Jorge Guerreiro no mindinho de unha comprida. card~o com medalhinha do Cristo Redentor. urn chapeuzinho tipo fac;a-chuva au faca-sol. e - desculpem meu entusiasmo - uma calc;a e um par de sapatos bran cos que eram uma .consagracao. 0 passado e 0 presente do Rio tentando sob reviver na grande figura.

Tinha um balanco. um ritmo. uma rnalemalencia. ~ma transacao no pe e cadeiras, tudo na maciota ... Em suma carioca da gema .

Quase na final da primeira escola. mel! chapa fai lazer xixi e eu morei noutro que 0 carioca rea liza exemplarmente: tava a uns quinze metros do banheiro rernexia na braguilha como se estivesse com uma coceira de lascar. naquele saudavel exibicianismo tradicional do sern-vergonha acostumada a porta de buteco.

Maior coincidencia, abostou-se do rneu lado e me ofereceu um preferencia nacional.

Aceitei e dei inicio a grande sacada carioca : jogar conversa. aparentemente, fora.

Quando voltou, muito mais tarde. caneado. eu tinha defendido 0 lugar sorrisos e cotaveladas. entre gracinhas palavrOes. solidariedade carioca.

-. Que camisa e essa. meu nego? Tua agremiac;Ao nao vai desfilar.

Minha emoC;ao nao teve limites: um carioca de palito e tudo: Fiz um discurso da pesada: - Tu e 0 ultimo dos moicanos. ou me/hor, dos cariocas! A gente tll tentando resistir. mas nao e mole . I disguised my anxiety as best I could, took a quick snort at my drink, practised a few "J'ai perdu rna plumes" with a French girl, and bandied words with the guy se lling mate who looked like a real hillbilly until I saw the way he chatted up the policemen.

Dark, neither short nor tall, nice sceptical sense of humour, he was wearing a Flameng'o Football Club shirt. 51. George ring on his long-nailed pinkie, Christ the Redeemer medallion, a little rain-or-shine hat. and - excuse my enthusiasm! - Pants, and the most magnificent pair of white shoes - in short. the past and present of Rio incarnate in one single, unforgettablfl: figure!

"0 Carioca e do Peru" (Carioca slang meaning ~a great guyW) It happened last year. I left the house armed to the teeth with sandwiches, bottles, transistor radio, first-aid kit. wearing a light shirt. bermudas and rubber sandals, my entrance tickets firmly pinned to my underwear, already mildly drunk, arguing with my wife for keeping me waiting, equipped with spare cigarettes, a fan, toilet paper, toothbrush - in fact everything required to see the great. the monumental. parades in some degree of comfort.

And when I found our sector, I got the shock of my life. There wasn't one Carioca there;

I could hear snatches of conversation, a 'uai" here, a "oui" there, a "yes" here and there, but good Carioca chat. that glorious x f thin S serious and trivial thin

An even greater coincidence, he squeezed himself in next to me and offered me one of his "national preference " cigarettes.

I took one, and struck up a typically Carioca conversation; "What's with this shirt man? Your club's not paraolng today' He roared With laughter. spM loudly and then pulled out a toothpick .

I could hardly contain my excitement - a real Carioca at last. toothpick and all!

I held forth on the subject at length .

"Hey man. you're the last of the Mohicans. or rather the Cariocas. We're trying to survive but it's not easy . Everyone goes on about progress, and the need to change and. so on, but I'm not so sure . Then one da ,

My companion rose and did a few samba steps the likes of which I have never seen before. What rhythm! What an undulation a the hips! What footwork! It all came so easily to him - a Carioca to the core!

Towards the end of the first parade. my friend went to take a leak, and I witnessed anQother unmistakeab le Carioca-ism . He wa~ still at least 15 yards from the bath room bu was already unbuttoning his fly enthusiastically in that healthy spirit of exhibitionism that lies at the heart of the true Carioca.

When he came back some time later. havin by the looks of it consumed a not inconsiderable quantity of "cachaca", he slid into the place that I had gone to somp. lengths to keep for him by means of altern ate ly elbowing. smiling, swearing and joking - after all, we Cariocas must stick together!

Then one of the big schools went by. What a scene! Magnificent! An unforgettable samba theme. fantastic floats. women beautiful enough to make you lose - or find - your head . Total delirium in the stan.

Between occasiona l shouts of "Let it all hang out" I glanced at my friend . In spite o' the fixed smile on his face. his eyes were two pools of tears . In homage to Cariocas in general. and remembering the saying "it only hurts when I laugh", I embraced him warm ly, and asked ; " Where are you from then? Vila Isabel?

"Me? No. I'm from Peru. he replied .

A good proportion of Rio's population has probably never heard of the suburb of Engenheiro Leal. Tucked away between Cascadura. Cavalcanti and Madureira suburbs. and against th. mountains. the old dusty train station of Engenheiro Leal no longer awaits "Smokey Mary" ("Maria Fuma~a") as Ihe old steam engines are affectionatly known in Brazil. The district lost its football team, and its pitch. bu t gained a Samba School whose rise to fame can be compared to that of Arranc{ Samba school.

The school was also once a Carniv "bloco" (called Arrastao U niled) an in 1974. it paraded in Group III of th Samba Schools. kept on winning. an eventually arrived at its present position in the first Group, as poor as it was when it started. To this day, the school does not have its 0\ own rehearsal ground, and its saml is presented on an unoccupied piC( of wasleland at Arlur de Azevedo Square. where not even an entranc fee is charged. The school's mane" comes from a small subsidy. and th profit on sales of beer and soft drinks during rehearsa ls attended by the public.

It is not a wealthy school, but few others can produce such a beautiful parade on a small budget. Last year it was one of the finalists for the championship. and to this day, there are many people who fIrmly believe Uniiio da Ilha do tovernador should have carried off first prize.

As suggested by the title, the school' presentation is an enigma. Will it catch the public's fancy again as it did in 1977? Who knows. but the school certainly has all the qualifications to win. and one of its trumps is Maria Augusta, author of this and the past years' themes.

Ten times champion, the school will sho' a phase of Brazilian cinema when musical comedy predominated, and the very special Brazilian brand of humor was known as "chanchada".

Imperio Serrano has all the qualifications to reach first place again, but one of it's most important components is singer Roberlo Ribei The school is also known for its animation, and for its superb coordination.

According to the organizers of the theme. this year's parade will try to reproduce the atmosphere of the old Oscarito movies. and one of its floats will be the fountain which wa part of the Atllintica Films.litle.Lasf lime the school won first place (in 1972) they also portrayed one of the most famous figures in Brazilian entertainment. Not to be missed at the Qui nt a da Boa Vista is the Zoo, which has. amongst other things, a magnificent selecti on of tropical fauna, especia lly birds.

Santa Teresa One of Rlo's oldest and most picturesque districts IS Santa Teresa whe re the city's only remaining tram se rvice is affectionately maintained. The tram (known as the "Bonde") stat ion IS in the La rgo da Carioca in downtown RIO. The fide over the Aquaduct. (built by the Jesuits more than 400 yea rs ago), and up into Santa Teresa affords the tourist a magnificent ly different view of the city. A Visit to Santa Teresa is a trip back in time, and its old mansions and stee ply cobb led stree ts exude a tangible aura of the past. The Chaca ra do Ceu museum (Rua Mur tinho Nobre 93) is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 2.00 to 5.30 PM and on Sundays from 11.00 to 5 PM.
