Quetzal: El más bello de la familia de los trogones, con su pecho rojo y su larga cola de plumas verdes, uno de los mayores atractivos de la RBBNM, visita la reserva en busca de aguacatillo, su principal alimento y por eso gran dispersor del mismo. Todo un espectáculo observarlo de diciembre a julio.

Resplendent Quetzal: The most beautiful bird of the Trogon Family, with its red chest and its long tail of green feathers, one of the mayor attractions of the RBBNM, visits the forest looking for “aguacatillo”, its favorite food, and because of that, great disperser. Spectacular to observe it from December to July.

Candelita Pechinegra : Esta pequeña ave se le conoce como el “amigo del hombre”, ya que parece no tener temor cuando los humanos se le acercan, es un residente de la reserva, se alimenta de insectos y es común observarlo en los diferentes senderos..

Slate Throated Redstart: This small bird is known as “friend of men” it seems he is not scared of people when approached, resident of the reserve, it feeds from insects and is common to see it in the different trails.

Saltón Cabecicastano: Otro residente de la RBBNM que se alimenta de insectos, se le encuentra desde el centro de México hasta el sur este del Perú, sobre sale su parte superior de la cabeza color castaño y lo vemos la mayor parte del tiempo cerca del suelo buscando bajo las hojas su presa.

Chestnut capped brush finch : Another resident of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, feeds on insects, its range is from central Mexico to the south east of Peru, stands out its chestnut cap and we see it most of the time close to the ground looking under de leafs for its prey.

TinamĂş Serrano: Especie residente, terrestre, de gran tamaĂąo, los machos son responsables de la anidacion y de sus crĂ­as. Se le observa arriba de los 1000 mts.

Highland Tinamu: Resident ground species, big size; males are responsible for the nesting and their young. Observed above 1000 mts.

Elanio Tijereta: Planeando por los cielos con su gracia vamos a ver a este gavilĂĄn migratorio de Sur America (Febrero a Setiembre), se alimentan en vuelo de insectos, reptiles, anfibios, frutas, pichones de otras aves. Sobresale su amplia cola partida y su contraste de plumaje negro con blanco.

Swallow tailed kite: Gliding graciously the skies we will see this migratory kite from south america, (ferbruary – september), feeds on flight of insects,reptiles, anphibians, fruits, and young chicks. Stands out its split tail and the combination of the white and black feathers.

Aguilillo Penachudo: Bellísima ave de gran tamaño residente, se alimenta de grandes reptiles, aves y mamíferos de tamaño medio. Puede llegar a medir más de 60 cms, prominente cresta puntiaguda de color negro en los adultos y en los alrededores de la cabeza tiene colores rojizos.

Ornate hawk-eagle: Beautiful bird of great size, resident, feeds on reptiles of big size, other birds and mammals of medium size. Its size could be of 60 cms, prominent black sharp crest on adults surrounded by reddish colors around the head.

Pava Negra : Ave de gran tamaño, residente con una bello plumaje negro brillante y con marcas faciales azul vivo, se alimenta de aguacatillo, fruta de palmas, frutos de Tucuico, endémico de Costa Rica y Panamá.

Black guan: Big size bird, resident with a beautiful bright black plumage and with bright blue facial marks, feeds on aguacatillo, palm fruits, tucuico fruits, endemic of Costa Rica and Panama.

Codorniz Pechinegra: Residente de la RBBNM, se le encuentra en grupos de entre 10 y 15 individuos, terrestre, endĂŠmico de Costa Rica, PanamĂĄ.

Black breasted wood quail: Resident of the reserve, you find it in groups of 10 and 15 individuals, walks on the ground, endemic of Costa Rica and Panama.

Paloma Perdiz Costarriquena: Se le encuentra entre los 1000 y 3000 metros de altura, residente, se alimenta de frutas, semillas e insectos, se encuentra tanto en el Caribe como en el pacífico, endémica de Costa Rica y Panamá.

Buff fronted quail –dove : Found between the 1000 and 3000 mts of altitude, resident, feeds on fruits, seeds and insects, found in both the Caribbean and the pacific solopes. Endemic of Costa Rica and Panamá.

Lechuza Café: Tamaño mediano, sin orejas, pico amarillo, residente de la reserva, se alimenta de insectos, pequeños mamíferos (roedores principalmente) reptiles, aves pequeñas.

Mottled Owl: Medium size, no ears, yellowish beak, resident of the reserve, feeds on insects, small mammals (mainly rodents), reptiles, and small birds.

Esmeralda de Coronilla Cobriza: Bello colibrí de pico corto curvado hacia abajo, residente de la reserva, se alimentan de insectos y néctar de gran variedad de flores incluyendo clusia, endémico de Costa Rica.

Coppery- headed emerald: Beautiful hummingbird of a small beak curved downwards, resident of the reserve, feeds on insects and néctar of various flowers, including clusia, endemic of Costa Rica.

Trogón Vientrianaranjado: Bello trogón de vientre naranja, residente, se alimenta de frutas e insectos, no es muy común en la cordillera central, más común en la cordillera de tilarán, endémico Costa Rica y Panamá.

Orange Bellied Trogon: Beautiful orange bellied trogon, resident, feeds on fruits and insects, not very common on the central mountain range, more common at the tilarán mountain range, endemic of Costa Rica and Panama.

Momoto Común: Bellos colores, coronilla y máscara bordeados de azul el resto verde, residente, se alimentan de reptiles, anfibios, arácnidos e insectos. Sus nidos son huecos en la tierra en pequeñas laderas.

Blue crown motmot: Beautiful colors, crown and mask bordered with blue, the rest is green, resident, feeds on reptiles, anphibians, spiders and insects. Builds nests on holes on the sides of small slopes.

Tucancillo Verde: Único tucán verde en Costa Rica, también el de pico más pequeño, muy común en el país a más de 800 mts, residente, se alimenta de frutas, insectos, reptiles, y huevos y crías de otras aves Emerald toucanet: Only green toucan in Costa Rica, also the one with smallest beak, very common around the country at more then 800 mts of elevation, feeds on fruits, insects, reptiles and eggs of other species.

Trepador Manchado: Pico largo, grueso y recto, abundante en ambas vertientes entre los 700 y 1400 mts, residente, se alimenta de insectos, reptiles y anfibios.

Spotted Woodcreeper: Long beak, straight and thick, abundant on both slopes between the 700 and 1400 mts, resident, feeds on insects, reptiles and amphibians.

Solitario Carinegro: Uno de los más bellos cantos de los bosques protegidos, pico naranja, ancho y corto , cara con máscara negra y patas naranja brillante, migratorio altitudinal, se alimenta de frutas y semillas, endémico de Costa Rica y Panamá Black-faced solitaire : One of the most beautiful songs of the protected forests, orange beak broad and short, black mask and bright orange legs, migrates on altitudes, feeds on fruits, seeds, endemic of Costa Rica and Panama.

Sorzal SombrĂ­o: Otro gran cantor de los bosques montanos, resalta su anillo ocular y su pico naranja, residente, se alimenta de insectos, arĂĄcnidos, frutas.

Slaty backed nightingale trush: Another great Singer of the cloud forests, stands out its orange ocular ring and beak, resident, feeds on insects, spiders and fruits.
