What Is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual, international event held on 22 April. Its aim is to raise awareness for our planet and the environmental challenges it faces.
The first ever Earth Day was held in 1970 and since then it is recognised by more than a billion people around the world.
It is an opportunity for people to show their support for the environment and come together to take action to help protect the Earth.
Our Amazing Planet!
Our planet is incredible! Nature has provided us with everything that has built the modern society we enjoy today. We depend on a rich biodiversity for our health, food and security. These are some of the amazing things nature has brought us:
Medicine
s
Many medicines were originally created from plants. For example, aspirin, which is a widely used painkiller, is actually an extract from willow bark. Its use was discovered by the ancient Egyptians and it is now produced with chemicals in labs around the world.
Food
Our Amazing Planet!
Air
All our food depends on natural systems: from the growing of crops in the soil to the water we rely on throughout farming and industry. Crops that are at least partially pollinated by animals make up 35% of food
Trees play a very important role in helping to keep our air clean and healthy. They naturally release oxygen and take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as well as other harmful substances. Trees help protect us from many illnesses
